Covering the period from January 1961 through December 1961, this report is a continuation of the series that began with the publication of Information Circular 7516 in October 1949. It is also the third report in the series to be prepared as a cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers. The cooperative agreement between the two groups provides for the publication of an annual cost bibliography with the work load involved in the preparation shared equally. This investigation was undertaken with the idea of studying a number of unconventional methods for making chromium to determine whether production cost could be lowered and to discuss some of the more recently described processes. These comprise carbon reduction of the oxide in vacuum, nitride dissociation, fusion electrolysis of the chloride, amalgam method, iodide dissociation, calcium reduction of the oxide, hydrogen reduction of the chloride, and reduction of this compound with zinc and with magnesium. Preference is given this latter method, which is shown in a flow sheet. Special attention is given purification of the chloride and separation of the vacuum at about 900° C. A reduction method for the elimination of traces of oxide contained in pure chromium by pure hydrogen obtained from the dissociation of zirconium hydride is described. The various methods are compared in a table in the appendix. Aluminothermic and silicothermic methods for the reduction of chromium oxide and the aqueous electrolysis have been disregarded in this investigation.

In Kansas, almost every oil well drilled into a limestone formation is treated with hydrochloric (muriatic) acid upon completion. This is done to increase the potential capacity of the well and thereby increase its "daily allowable" production (see p. 9 ), to shorten the time required to produce the recoverable oil, and to increase the quantity of oil recovered ultimately from the reservoir. The porosity and. permeability of limestone formations seldom are uniform throughout the proved area, consequently the production capacities of completed wells vary considerably. Acid treatment of wells tends to increase production capacity and to equalize potential capacity. If offset wells already have been treated with acid, new wells usually are treated to protect the property on which they are drilled against drainage. The ignition source of fires and explosions in coal mines is sometimes difficult to explain because resulting widespread destruction often erases valuable evidence that might reveal the cause. However, through years of experience, investigators have been able to piece together enough evidence to establish the reasons and, thereby, have been equipped to recommend corrective or preventative measures. The pattern of hazards is not constant. It changes with the development of new practices and new equipment. Important among the new hazards to coal mining are those introduced by electricity. In addition to the dangers of electric shock, fires and explosions from heat and arcs, and premature blasts, certain others have developed as a result of stray electric currents from direct-current traction systems. The conventional direct-current power-distribution system in coal mines is conducive to electrolysis damage to mine tracks, metallic pipelines, grounded power conductors, and structures in a position to become conductors of stray currents. The voltage drop resulting from power demand on intentionally grounded power conductors and accidental grounds on insulated conductors are common sources of stray currents in coal mines. Uncontrolled electric cur-rents flowing through the earth and metallic structures can be a menace, and these contribute to the estimated $6,000,000,000 annual loss caused by corrosion. The purpose of this publication is to discuss some of the electrolysis hazards in the coal-mining industry and to outline corrective measures to alleviate them.

Eleven workshops were held in various locations throughout the country in an attempt to reach the many diverse groups working in various mineral commodity areas and special ties. These meetings were held between March 1, 1974 and June 25, 1975. They were held under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines Contract to the University of Missouri-Rolla which was designed to help define Bureau research and development priorities. At each workshop a summary of current Bureau research and development was presented and the attendees were asked to present their ideas on what Research and Development programs should be undertaken to meet their needs locally. Participants included representatives of federal and state agencies, educational institutions, mining companies, equipment companies and other interested parties. The workshops covered under this report include lead mining in Missouri, limestone mining, coal mining both surface and underground in the midwest and in the Rocky Mountain area, iron mining in Minnesota, two top management meetings on institutional problems and, finally, a special two-day meeting on roof control.

The conditions under which the researches of the Bureau of Mines on petroleum and natural gas were conducted in 1952 were little changed from those indicated in the last report,2/ which dealt with activities during 1951, immediately after crossing of the 38th Parallel by the North Korean Army. Although only a small part of the program was classified in the military sense, there was a feeling of the clash of world forces which called for even cheer scrutiny of the research problems so that the emphasis could be placed without delay where the greatest needs for na¬tional defense seemed to be. The reports of the work accomplished were so directed as to have the greatest immediate value to persons charged with supply planning for the military forces and included information on the availability and characteristics of a wide variety of crude oils, fuels, and other petroleum products. Actually, the approach, direction, and conduct of the work do not differ greatly under the two circumstances, as has been pointed out in earlier reports; only the tempo changes.

State-of-the-art longwall roof supports provide effective strata control, but failures of these support systems still occur. To identify failure mechanisms and the impact these failures have on the safety of the support system, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has been conducting research on shield mechanics in the Bureau's unique mine roof simulator, as well as field studies of in situ support loading and investigations of longwall failures, Three types of failures are discussed: (1) inadequate support capacity, (2) structural failure, and (3) instability. Hypothetical situations with proposed courses of action and case studies of actual longwall failures are described. This information is intended to assist the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSEIA) and industry mining personnel in safety evaluations of longwall roof support systems.

The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been-published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 382, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment. Report of Investigations 3309, Permissible Electrically Operated Air Compressors, which contains similar information, was issued in August 1936, and a Report of Investigations 3326, Permissible Electrically Operated Room Hoists, was issued in January 1937. Thus, the present paper is the third to give detailed information concerning permissible machines of types not included in bulletins, and covers all the rock-dust distributors approved prior to October 1, 1936.

MINFO has been developed to serve as a frontend for three databases created to store basic minerals information gathered during the minerals resource assessment conducted by U.S. Bureau of Mines(USBM) for the Malheur and Jordan resource areas of southeastern Oregon(MJRA). The primary database is the Minerals Location Inventory (MLI.DBF) which contains of information assembled from field work performed during this project, the USBM Minerals Availability System/Mineral Information Location System(MAS/MILS) database, the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral lndustries(DOGAMT) Mineral Information Location(MILOC) database, and the U.S. (Geological Survey(USGS) Mineral Resource Database System(MRDS), In addition, assay results are contained in the geochemical database (ELEMENTS.DBF) and modified X-ray diffraction analysis information is contained in the minerals database (MINOR.M.DBF). MINFO includes four types of program modules: ? Enter/Edit Data was developed to allow the addition of new information and to encourage correction of errors by providing a convenient means of entering and editing data and a large degree of automatic checking and filtering of entries. ? ACAD/DBF Link links each site symbol posted on the map in the drawing file to a record in the database. This provides the user with the ability to use a mouse or other pointing device to graphically select a site for viewing and editing. Edits are performed directly in the database file, ? Reports contains 7 formats of data output for creating files for printing, transfer to other database formats, and exporting to other software packages such as spreadsheets and word processing programs. ? Maps includes 5 programs for creating AutoCAD script files which can be used to create maps of selected information in conjunction with AutoCAD. Mineral location mapping files derived from MLI.DBF can be created in 2 formats. Mapping files can be generated from each of the 2 sets of geochemical analyses contained in ELEMENTS.DBF. X-ray diffraction analyses can also be translated into instructions for creating and posting piecharts at sampling sites.

A newly developed chemical conditioning technique, which greatly simplifies the preparation of plating baths for the electrodeposition of titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings, is described in this report. The new plating technique was used to prepare samples of titanium diboride (TiB2) coatings on three types of substrate materials. These samples were then evaluated in both low- and high-speed wear-test programs to determine the wear resistance, microhardness, and adhesion of the coatings. In general, it was found that the wear resistance of the coatings is independent of substrate. Scanning electron micrographs have shown that the coating wear surfaces are very smooth, suggesting slow and continuous removal of the coating during the wear test (that is, adhesive wear). Adhesion between the coating and all substrates was excellent. Microhardness results show that the TiB2 coating is harder than alumina, with a hardness value exceeding 5,000 kg/mm2 measured in one test. The results of the wear tests show that TiB2 coatings have relatively poor wear resistance compared with alumina in low-speed unlubricated sliding environments, but exhibit wear properties comparable with alumina in high-speed unlubricated sliding environments.

"In the course of its investigations pertaining to the promotion of safety the Bureau of Mines is actively engaged in investigating all promising materials that may be of value in rendering methane or other combustible gases, vapors, or solids less inflammable.Added substances are of value if such additions narrow the limits of inflammability, raise the ignition temperature, lower the speed of propagation of flame, or reduce the maximum pressure developed. Of major importance is the effect of added materials on the limits of inflammability, because methane is the chief combustible s liberated in mines, considerable work has been done with extinguishing agents on methane flames. For obvious reasons, a substance to be of value for the extinction flames should be a gas, or a liquid having a sufficient vapor pressure to give concentrations of the vapor in sufficient amounts to extinguish the flames or markedly narrow the limits of inflammability. The substance should be nontoxic, cheap, and noncorrosive and must be incombustible. Solids, such as rock dust, are undesirable and of little value for combustible gases because they soon settle out of the atmosphere, and their flame- extinguishing value is thereby lost. There are at present only a few gases and vapors-for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and carbon tetrachloride-which meet these requirements.The extinction of methane flames by nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and argon has been reported by Coward and Hartwell 4; the extinction by water vapor by Coward and Gleadell 5, and the extinction by helium and carbon tetrachloride by Coward and Jones 6."

The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

The Bureau of Mines annually publishes statistical data reflecting technological trends in the minerals industry (metals and nonmetals except fuels). This report outlines recent developments and trends and the technology outlook for mining practices and metallurgical processing based on a review of the minerals industry during the past 2 years. A historical statistical series which indicates trends in the minerals industry has been extended with 1970 data. In addition, data are given from a 5-year Bureau of Mines cyclic canvass of froth flotation plants. Data for 1970 are compared with those of 1960 and 1965.

One goal of the Bureau of Mines is to conserve the Nation's mineral resources by developing improved performance materials. Consistent with this goal, the Bureau conducted studies on the formation of undesirable cristobalite in seven different fire clays used as refractories. The studies employed scanning electron micrography, chemical and X-ray analyses, and pyrometric cone equivalent determinations to examine the sample clays and determine the effect of thermal history and stablilizing additives on the amount of cristobalite in various calcines. This research has indicated that as fire clay calcining temperatures increased from 1390° to 1,490° C there was a gradual decrease in the percent of cristobalite present in the calcines and a progressive development of mullite crystallization. No cristobalite was found in fire clays calcined above 1,550° C, but cristobalite reappeared when the calcines were reheated to temperatures between 1,400° and 1,500° C. The research also revealed that additions of lithium fluoride (LiF) prevented formation of cristobalite in fire clay calcines.
