Mine waste and mine reclamation are topics of major interest to the mining industry, the government and the general public. This publication and its companion volume are the proceedings of a conference held in Pittsburgh, April 19-21, 1988. There were nine sessions (50 papers) that dealt with the geochemistry, hydrology and problems of mine waste and mine water, especially acid mine drainage. These comprise Volume 1. The nine sessions (43 papers) that dealt with reclamation and restoration of disturbed lands, as well as related policy issues, are included in volume 2. Volume 2 also contains the ten papers that pertained to control of subsidence and mine fires at abandoned mines. Poster session presentations are, in general, represented by abstracts; these have been placed in the back of both volumes.

1.1 DEVELOPMENT OF INDUCTANCE MATRICES The basic building block in this analytical work is the development of an equivalent circuit. The equivalent circuit for the cable depends on all of the distributed parameters of the cable although the series inductance and resistance are of primary importance. The cable resistances are generally available from handbooks or from cable manufacturers. On the other hand, the cable inductances are not usually available either from handbooks or from the manufacturer's published data. Thus, it is useful to summarize the derivation of the origin of the inductance matrix from basic principles. 1.1.1 Flux Around a Cylindrical Conductor The flux pattern around a cylindrical current carrying conductor can be found by using symmetry in conjunction with Ampere's Law. From symmetry it is clear that the flux lines which always close on themselves must be concentric circles. Thus, from symmetry alone one can get a qualitative picture of the magnetic field. This is shown in Fig. 1.1 where the inner circle represents the solid round conductor and the outer circle represents a flux line. The quantitative picture will now be developed using Ampere's Law.

Mechanized dirt-moving equipment has greatly increased the scope of prospect trenching by lowering the costs and increasing the speed of such work. Where the soil covering was more than 3 or 4 feet deep, operators were quickly discouraged and abandoned surface exploration in favor of shaft sinking, drifting, or diamond drilling; wildcat trenching was seldom undertaken, even where the soil covering was thin. Although power shovels, trench diggers, and draglines are useful under special conditions, caterpillar-mounted angledozers will usually do the same type of work and have a far wider range of adaptability. They are therefore incomparably the most generally useful equipment for the purpose. Since 199 the Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a widespread search for minerals useful to the war program; this work required a great deal of pioneer exploration in areas where known outcrops were marginal or subcommercial by pre-war standards. Engineers in charge of field operations were quick to perceive the applicability of mechanized trenching on a fairly large scale, particularly in the Northwestern States, where completely exposed vein-outcrops are rare. Probably no other organization to date has done a comparable amount of angledozer prospect trenching under such a wide range of conditions. The following comments and accompanying cost tables are based on work performed chiefly in Idaho, under a variety of physical and climatic conditions. The first bulletin (269) 3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, compiled the entropy values then available for the elements and in-organic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. Elaborations and revisions followed in 1936 (272) and 1941 (280), when over 500 usable entropy values were tabulated. The present bulletin constitutes a further elaboration and revision. The accumulation of data since 1940 has been marked, and 800 entropy values now are available. The present bulletin also contains all the pertinent explanatory matter that appeared in its predecessors. Thus, it retains the same dual purpose of assembling the available values of the entropies at 298.16° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds and giving enough explanation of methods of calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

This report describes a 4-inch diameter borehole probe which contains a low light level TV camera, magnetic compass, light illumination source, bottom/water detector sensor and a pointing angle sensor. The camera viewing angle is at a right angle to the probe's body. All data from the sensor is multiplexed into the closed circuit camera video for transmission on a single 50 ohm coaxial cable to a surface control unit. Likewise control of the probe's power, zoom lens, focus, panning and aperture is accomplished via a down-link multiplexed on the same cable.

A mineral survey of the 23,760-acre Abert Rim Wilderness Study Area (OR-1-101) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the Bureau of land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in south-central Oregon, 26 mi north-northeast of Lakeview, OR. Federal and Lake County mining records indicate no mining claims, geothermal leases, or oil and gas leases within the study area as of January 1, 1987. No economic concentrations of minerals were found in the study area. The Wilderness Study Area is dominated by Abert Rim, a north-trending Basin and Range fault scarp that parallels the study area's western boundary. Exposed on the scarp is an approximately 2,000-ft-thick volcanic sequence consisting of Oligocene-Miocene basalts, tuffs, and tuffaceous sedimentary rocks.

Researchers working for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory are developing ways to protect the health of miners. Part of that effort is devoted to improving the air quality in underground stone mines by developing ventilation techniques that can be used in these types of operations. The air quality in these large opening nonmetal mines can be significantly improved by using diesel particulate matter (DPM) controls along with sufficient ventilation quantities to remove contaminants. Practical methods of ventilating these underground stone mines can be accomplished by using mine layouts that course and separate ventilation air through the use of stoppings. The design, construction, and maintenance of effective stoppings in large openings have been a real challenge to mine operators. Several different types of stoppings have and can be used for this application. The choice of stopping design, material used, and construction techniques should be dependent upon a number of factors such as the intended life and effectiveness desired.

A pilot plant for treating mine drainage by neutralization with limestone was designed, fabricated, and operated by the Bureau of Mines. The process consists of (1) producing a very fine (minus 400-mesh) limestone slurry, (2) mixing the slurry with the mine water, (3) aerating the resulting mixture to remove carbon dioxide and precipitate iron, and (4) separating the solids from the liquid by sedimentation. A mine discharge of pH 2.8, containing 1,700 ppm total acidity, 36 ppm ferrous iron, and 360 ppm total iron, was treated at rates from 300 to 400 gpm. The treated water ultimately reached a pH of 7.4 and contained no detectable iron. The resulting sludge compacted to approximately one-third the volume of sludge from mine water neutralized with lime. The advantages of the limestone process, compared with the conventional lime process are as follows: Widespread distribution and lower cost of run-of-mine, indigenous limestone; simplicity of plant design; reduced hazards and plant operating and maintenance costs accruing from the use of a less reactive chemical agent; higher solids concentration of the precipitated sludge; and no deleterious effect caused by accidental overtreatment. While total process costs could not be determined, it is conservatively estimated that the cost of treating mine water by the limestone process is one-third to one-half the cost of the lime process, depending on the characteristics of the water to be treated and the availability and quality of limestone used.

A computer program for the static load analysis of linear elastic structures is presented. It is the product of a two-year project for the development of a efficient program for the analysis of mine-type structures. The report is divided into two parts. The first part explains the general method of analysis, the computer program organization and the most significant numerical techniques used. The second part is a user manual for the computer program. The FORTRAN IV computer program deck and example problems were transmitted separately to the sponsor. The Permian Red Bed copper deposits of the South Central States are a potentially important resource. Only the higher grade, near-surface ores are now exploited because conventional froth flotation does not recover oxidized copper minerals which comprise 10 to 15 percent or more of the copper content of typical ore. Laboratory-scale beneficiation studies were initiated to devise a method capable of recovering both sulfide and oxidized copper mineral. Testing established that the high clay and gypsum content of typical ore prevented effective flotation of the oxide mineral using sulfidizing, fatty-acid, or oil emulsion techniques. A modified leach-precipitation-flotation (L-P-F) procedure recovered over 90 percent of the copper, compared to a recovery of 77 percent obtained by conventional sulfide flotation. The higher costs of the L-P-F method would reduce the increased revenue from higher copper recovery. An increase in copper price and/or an increase in oxide copper content of the ore would make the L-P-F process comparatively more attractive.

Two versions of a VF transceiver to aid in location of trapped miners has been developed and tested. The belt worn model was produced in both transmitter and transceiver configurations. In addition, a quantity of the belt worn models were fabricated using aluminum wire instead of copper in order to reduce unit weight. Ten prototypes of a battery cap model VF transceiver were also fabricated demonstrating further unit size and weight reduction while maintaining electrical performance. Samples of- both versions were tested environmentally and the test data is included in this report. While both versions of the VF transceiver are similar electrically, and are constructed using convential manufacturing techniques, the battery cap model realizes a lower total weight, smaller volume and production cost than the belt worn version. Operationally, the battery cap model assures that the VF transceiver will always be with the miner.

"The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior for the promotion of safety in mines and quarries, has just been closed for seventeenth consecutive year. Enrollment covered more plants than in any previous contest. Moreover, a larger volume of employment was represented than in the contests of previous years, and several new plants were enrolled for the first time. Six safety trophies are awarded annually in these competitions one to the leading plant in each of six groups. An anthracite, mine in Pennsylvania, a bituminous-coal mine in West Virginia, a metal mine in Tennessee, a nonmetal mine in Virginia an open-cut mine in Minnesota, and a quarry in Alabama won the 1941 trophies.To be eligible to win a trophy, a mine or quarry must have had at least least 25 men working under ground or in the pit for not loss than 100 days. The number of man-hours worked must total 30,000 or more. Mines or quarries having no accidents during the year are rated according to the number of man-hours worked. If there are no plants with accident-free records, the mines and quarries in each of the six groups are rated according to their accident-severity rates; the plant having, the lowest rate is declared the winner.The Sentinls of safety trophies presented to the winning mines and quarries in the six groups were donated by the Explosives Engineer magazine to promote safety in the mineral industry. They are held by the winning companies for 1 year or until won by other mines and quarries."

Heat capacity measurements of anhydrous cobalt sulfate (CoSO4), copper sulfate (CuSO4), nickel sulfate (NiSO4), and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) were conducted over the temperature range 51° to 298° K. The results were used to evaluate the following entropies at 298.15° K (cal/deg mole): CoSO4, 28.1; CuSO4, 26.8; NiSO4, 24.8; and ZnSO4, 26.4. Entropies were combined with heats of formation to give free energies of formation.

Available statistics show that the demands of the American chemical industry for sodium sulphate have been increasing slightly in recent years. The supply from domestic sources, particularly In the form of byproduct salt cake from the acid manufacturers, has been tending to decrease due to the growing manufacture of synthetic acid. Both hydrochloric and nitric acids are being synthesized from their elements. The natural result has been that a smaller amount of salt cake is available. Simultaneously, the expansion of the Kraft paper industry, especially in the South, has brought about greater demand for sodium sulphate in that section. This dean is being met by domestic byproduct salt cake, by imported German sodium sulphate made from potash waste liquors, and by favorable situated domestic deposits of Glauber salts and tile anhydrous salt, thenardite. No shortage of natural sodium sulphate exists in the United States, but usually such deposits occur in semiarid regions far removed from transportation facilities and from markets. Moreover, the major portion of the natural deposits is Glauber salt or mirabilite (Na2SO4 ? 10H20), which must be dried or dehydrated in order to meet consumer requirements. The water of hydration represents, roughly, 55 percent of tae total weight of the crude salts and therefore has a very important influence on transportation costs. In marry instances the cost of getting, even the dehydrated product to market is the deciding economic factor. Therefore, the recovery oil production of anhydrous sodium sulphate from plant-.waste liquors or from natural brines of suitable composition might be economically feasible. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, at its nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, New Brunswick, N. J., has, for a number of rears, been investigating the commercial possibilities of treating the complex saline mineral polyhalite (K2SO4?NgSO4?2CaSO4?2H20) for the recovery of potash and magnesia. Certain proposed processes (1, 2, 3, 4)4/ yield waste liquors that contain the bulk of the magnesium and sulphate originally combined as magnesium sulphate in the polyhalite molecule. "INTRODUCTION For a number of years, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests on various types of structures to ascertain the effect of seismic vibrations emanating from quarry blasting in an effort to determine an index of damage. Associat¬ed with these tests, occasional records were made of the characteristics of the air blast or concussion from the explosions. Although the importance of the air-blast problem was recognized, the equipment was not designed for airblast measurements, nor was the early research program concerned with the problem. After the ground-vibration tests had been completed, attention was turned to study of the air blast and its effect. The program was modified, however, in certain aspects by the imminence of war and the final entry of the United States into the conflict. These modifications were made to supply information pertaining to military and civilian defense problems.Detailed discussion of these problems is beyond the scope of this report, which attempts to present preliminary results of factual and fundamental character. However, it may be noted that airblast data are urgently needed for intelligent design of both Government and non-Government buildings, which must withstand the air blast from bombs and afford maximum protection for the occupants. The safety of vital equipment above and below ground necessitates consideration of damage from air blast. Protection against use of dynamite by saboteurs, moreover, hinges largely on the effect of air blast. Identification of a planned ""accident"" involving dynamite often entails knowledge of the characteristics and power of the airblast.The peacetime problem of damage from air blast resulting from quarry and mining blasting activities is of course exaggerated by the wartime requirements of increased production accelerated operation, and enlarged development."

One criterion central to most definitions of reclamation is the restoration of mined lands to their original productive potential. This is often difficult to achieve on mined lands in the Northern Great Plains because of the rigorous climate (Bares 19;2) and various soil related problems including sodicity, salinity, soil permeability, low organic matter and plant nutrient deficiencies (Malakondaiah and Safaya 1982). Field study sites were established on recontotured mined areas during the early 1970's (prior to the topsoil mandate) in which several amendments were tested for their ability to improve spoil/topsoil conditions and, hence, increase plant production. Physical and chemical properties of these control (untreated) and amended spoils and topsoils have been summarized (Safaya et al. 1982). A number of grass and legume species combinations were studied. The general effects of one time (prior to seeding), single rate (approximately 100 mT ha-1) application of leonardite and/or slack coal to spoils and topsoils was the reduction of grass dry matter yields (NB 1 test site: dry matter yield (DMY) without slack was 110 g m 2 yr I ; DMY with slack was 80 g m -2 yr 1 I and the promotion of legume establishment and yield (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 13 g m 2 yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 93 g m 2 yr 1). On South Beulah topsoil, treated with leonardite, production of weedy species was remarkably lower than that without leonardite (SB test site: DMY without leonardite was 252 g m - yr -1; DMY with leonardite was 177 g m 2 yr 1). The general effect of commercial fertilizer applied one time prior to seeding (rates ranging from 9-13-0 to 44-1 12-28 kg ha-1 of N-P-K) was to increase plant production during the first two to three years after which the effect disappeared. This effect was much more pronounced on spoils (NB I test site: DMY on spoils without fertilizer was 53 g m -2 yr -1; DMY on spoils with fertiliser was 132 gm -2 yr -1). Weedy species accounted for most of the biomas, production during the first growing season. Three of the test sites were designed to study plant production on topsoils and spoils. Establishment and production of grass species were comparatively better on topsoils (30 cm in depth) than on spoils while legumes were most successful on the soils (Center test site, 1979; DMY of grasses on topsoil was 170 g m 2 yr -1 DMY of grasses on spoils was 52 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on topsoil was 20 g m -2 yr -1; DMY of legumes on spoil was 191 g m 2 yr -1). Total plant production on topsoiled (302 m thickness) plots at the South Beulah site (DMY in 1979 of 269 g m 2 yr 1) was comparable to that of native western wheatgrass prairie (DMY of 262 g m -2 yr -1). An experiment was conducted to find out if time of planting would have any effect on establishment of grasses on spoils. It was fund that late fall seeding was superior to spring planting for establishment of wheatgrasses at NB 3 test site (Control Plot, 1975: DMY on spring-seeded was 1 g m -2 yr - 1; DMY on fall-seeded was 55 g m -2 yr -1). In general, wheatgrasses (slender, streambank, thickspike and western) yielded the most aboveground biomass of all the grass species tested; yellow sweetclover was the most successful legume. Yellow sweetclover established and was productive on both spoils and topsoils but only where competition with grasses was apparently minimal. Durar hard fescue established and thrived on topsoil but dry matter production was low compared to that of wheatgrasses. Emerald crown-vetch demonstrated a potential for growth on spoils where water conditions were adequate, whereas side-oats grama, prairie sand-reed, alkali sacaton, and bird's -foot trefoil demonstrated only sporadic success. Little bluestem did not become established at any of the test sites. Peak production of the planted species, especially grasses, was generally reached by the second week of July. Legume and weed production continued to increase into late August.

Recovery of fine mica from a sample of impounded tailing from the Dixie Mines, Inc., crushing and screening operations, Heflin, Ala., was investigated to determine if plant losses of mica could be reduced while econmically producing a commercially acceptable mica concentrate. Conventional wet-tabling and agglomerate-tabling methods yielded concentrates assaying about 95 percent mica from the tailing that contained 17 percent mica. Products containing about 98 percent mica and accounting for mica recoveries of 86 percent were obtained by flotation, using as reagents sulfuric acid, kerosene, and coco amine acetate (a mixture consisting chiefly of dodecyl and tetradecyl amine acetates). The results of the batch flotation tests were verified by tests in a small continuous flotation pilot plant.

Bureau of Mines personnel examined mines, prospects, and mineralized areas to determine the mineral resources and potential of deposits in the Bucks Lake and Chips Creek RARE II areas in Plumas and Butte Counties, California. These areas lie along the west slope of the Sierra Nevada on opposite sides of the North Fork Feather River and encompass an area of 62,800 acres (25,400 ha). Metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Pennsylvanian Calaveras Formation are intruded by plutons of Mesozoic age. Mineral; of economic iterest are in quartz veins in metasediments close to these plutons; they are principally gold and silver with minor amounts of copper, lead, and zinc minerals. Molybdenum, copper, silver, and tungsten minerals occur in tactite along metasedimentary-granitic rock contacts. In both areas, auriferous Tertiary channel gravels have been extensively developed. Asbestos occurs in ultramafic rocks in both areas, and a limestone deposit was explored in the Chips Creek area. Gold is the principal economic mineral in the Bucks Lake RARE II area. The Shenandoah Mine (fig. 1, no. 19) contains 7,500 tons (6,800 t) of indicated and inferred subeconomic gold resources in sulfide-bearing, silicified metamorphic rocks of the Calaveras Formation (table 1). Similar rocks have yielded gold at the Edman and Megowen Mines, adjacent to the area. A high potential exists for additional lode resources in the area around the Shenandoah Mine. Callahan Mining Corporation personnel believe a multi-million ton disseminated gold deposit underlies the property.

Rutile concentrate, used in the manufacture of welding rode, smoke-screen chemicals, and alloys, is being produced by the Titanium Alloy Co. of Arkansas at its mine and. mill in Magnet Cove. The company estimates a substantial reserve of recoverable rutile. This is a new operation, and production figures are not known. Previous operations had stripped the placer material, leaving the underlying mineralized zone. INTRODUCTION This report describes the mining and milling; operations of the Titanium Alloy Co. of Arkansas. The property was examined by the author on March 4, 1942, and subsequent dates. J. A. Wood, general manager, was very helpful in supplying information.

For several years the Bureau of mines has been investigating the characteristics of ground vibrations produced by quarry blasts. Considerable basic information has been obtained in the course of this study, and the results have been made known to the public through various publications listed in the accompanying bibliography The studies have been confined to obtaining fundamental knowledge of the characteristics of the vibrations themselves, because it was evident at once that he problem was extremely complicated. It was felt that any attempt to predict the effect of a ground vibration on any type of artificial structure would be useless until the complexities of building vibrations are better understood. As opportunity offered, teats wore made in various types of structures and the effects of vibrations from many different sources were measured. In one set of tests (5)4/, it was demonstrated that the behavior of a building as quite different if it was shaken by vibrations originating outside tae foundation walls than if the source of the vibrations was within the building; vibrations coming from the ground outside seemed to shake the building as a single, loosely-coupled structure, whereas mechanically induced vibrations within the house seemed to set floors and walls in motion as independent units, each of which communicated its own natural motion to the adjoining member, causing a very complicated movement that was impossible to interpret.
