The preparation technological conditions and regeneration method of two novel granulated adsorbing materials of rectorite/fly ash composite (Material 1) and rectorite/water quenched - slag composite (Material 2) and the use of them to remove heavy metals from copper smelting plant wastewater have been studied. The experimental results showed that under the preparation conditions with the ratio of rectorite to fly ash or water - quenched slag of 1:1, the amount of the additive (Industrial Starch, IS) of 15% (Material 1) or 10% (Material 2), the addition of 50% water, and the calcination temperature of 500? (Material 1) or 400? (Material 2), the efficiency of heavy metal removal with the granulated materials was the best, whereas the ratio of disintegration loss was the lowest. Under the treatment conditions of natural pH, and with the addition of the granulated materials of 0.07g/cm3 (Material 1) or 0.05g/cm3 (Material 2), a reaction time of 60 minutes (Material 1) or 40 minutes (Material 2), and the adsorption temperature of 25?, the efficiency for the granulated materials to remove Cu2+Pb2+Zn2+Cd2+ and Ni2+ from the copper smelting plant wastewater was 98.9, 97.5, 96.7, 90.2, and 79.1, (Material 1) or 98.2, 96.3, 78.6, 86.2, and 64.2, (Material 2), respectively, and the quality indexes of the wastewater after treatment conformed with the first level of integrated wastewater discharge standard (GB8978-1996). When the adsorption of heavy metal ions on the surface attained saturation the granulated materials could be regenerated by washing with 1 mol/L sodium chloride (NaCl) solution and still with quite good heavy metal removal efficiency. The granulated adsorbing materials had the advantages of high efficiency of wastewater treatment, easy method of solid-liquid separation and regeneration, and a broad prospect of applications.

"Silver is currently lost as jarosite during the pressure oxidation of sulphides and cyanidation of the residues yields 5-10% of silver. Efforts to recover silver from complex sulphides, which contain economic fractions of silver require an understanding of the behaviour of acanthite during pressure oxidation. However, previous studies of acanthite (Ag2S) reaction have been complicated by the formation of argento-jarosite and uncertainties arise on the interpretation of the results.In this work, the acid pressure oxidation of high-grade natural silver sulphide mineral (acanthite) was carried out at 110-150°C and under the conditions similar to that of pressure oxidation of complex sulphide. The predominant product of reaction is elemental sulphur. The rate of reaction increases with increasing temperature and with the presence of ferric ions. The kinetics is controlled by chemical reaction with activation energy of 72.6 kJ/mol. The rate of reaction decreases with the presence of silver sulphate in the initial slurry. Hydrocyclone is widely used in closed-circuit grinding process. However, in the first classification operation of coarse particles with high pulp density, the shortcomings of traditional cyclone are that the grinding cycle load is much high, the apex of cyclone is easily to be blocked and classification efficiency is less. Specifically, the problems of traditional cyclone used in grinding process are as follows: (1) Mill utilization factor is low and its handling capacity is small. (2) Coarse particles mixing in cyclone overflow affects the following separation process and fine particles mixing in underflow causes over-grinding, which affects the total recovery rate of valuable minerals. (3) High grinding cycle load leads to large amount of high-density slurry pumping, which causes high energy consumption and severe wear of cyclones, pipelines and pumps. The applications of new type pre-classification hydrocyclone with centrifugal volute in the first classification process of Iron Mine Mill are introduced in the paper. Pulp particles fed in the centrifugal volute were arranged in advance, so that coarse particles can be far away from the overflow pipe, which can reduce the short circuit current to avoid coarse particles entering overflow and improve classification efficiency and accuracy of cyclone. The strong points of the new cyclone in the coarse classification operation are as follows: (1) finer overflow and less fine particles mixing in underflow improves classification efficiency more than 10%; (2) lower ball mill load cycle improves ball capacity more than 10%;(3) grinding energy consumption reduces by more than 20% and cyclone feed pump reduces energy consumption by more than 12%. In short, new type pre-classification cyclone with centrifugal volute solves the problems of fine particles mixing in underflow, high grinding cycle load and less classification efficiency in the coarse classification operation. Therefore, it has broad application prospects in ferrous metal and non-ferrous metal ore dressing plant.

In the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (Brazil) exploitations of several minerals are conducted by small producers. They use traditional techniques of gravity concentration in small-scale plants as jigs and vibratory tables. During decades the mining activity generated tailings with economic interest in particularly columbite-tantalite. Samples collected in tailing piles of a gravity plant were characterized in mineral composition, which shows in the heavy fraction the minerals spodumene, columbite-tantalite, ilmeno-hematite, garnet and cassiterite. The light fraction presents quartz, feldspar and muscovite. The degree of liberation of spodumene and columbite-tantalite were determined using optical microscopy that presents liberation in 100 µm (90% to columbite-tantalite and 100% to spodumene). Centrifugal concentrator Falcon SB-40 was used for concentration of these minerals and presents 65% recovery in mass to two stages with mass reduction about 85%.

With the scarcity of fresh potable water on mining sites, particularly those in arid and remote regions, the use of sea water is being contemplated and actually used at a number of mineral concentrators worldwide. The use of sea water, with its associated high dissolved solids content and ionic strength will affect all aspects of processing (e.g. frothing and froth stability, buffering capacity for pH control, solubility of minerals and corrosion of media and equipment). Selective depression of pyrite is more difficult in sea water due to the increased lime addition to achieve a high pH. This results in a reduction in molybdenite recovery. The use of grinding media with various chromium contents and its effect on subsequent Cu and Mo flotation has been investigated in the current study, with both grinding and flotation testing conducted in artificial sea water. Pulp chemistry (pH, Eh and DO) have been logged during grinding, and flotation testing was conducted on subsequent slurries. The flotation results show that the system is remarkably robust and able to cope with wide ranges of pulp chemistry parameters. The alteration of surface properties of chalcopyrite after biological conditioning with Leptospirillum ferriphilum was studied by adsorption, zeta-potential, contact angle and bioleaching tests. The strains of L. ferriphilum cultured using different energy sources (either soluble ferrous ion or chalcopyrite) were used. The adhesion of bacteria to the chalcopyrite surface was a fast process. Additionally, the adsorption of substrate-grown bacteria was greater and faster than that of liquid-grown ones. The isoelectric point (IEP) of chalcopyrite moved toward that of pure L. ferriphilum after conditioning with bacteria. The chalcopyrite contact angle curves motioned diversely in the 9K culture with and without chalcopyrite powders. The results of X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis indicated that in the bioleaching process by L. ferriphilum, the surface of chalcopyrite was covered with sulfur and jarosite. Furthermore, iron phase dissolved preferentially from chalcopyrite surface during bioleaching from EDS detection. The copper extraction was low resulting from the formation of a passivation layer. The major component of the passivation layer that blocked continuous copper extraction was sulfur, not jarosite.

Ammonium-nitrate is a main component in blasting agents and dissolved ammonium residues may be discharged with mine water. The European Union aims to reach a good state of the water quality and recommends ammonium content below 0.5 mg/L for drinking water. Natural zeolites adsorb ammonium from water. In this work, the removal of low-concentration ammonium by commercial natural zeolites was studied in continuous tests. Natural zeolites made up between 83% and 95% of the mineral composition. The major zeolite minerals were chabazite and clinoptiolites and minor amounts of erionite and mordenite were as well present. The five natural zeolite samples, 500~710 µm, were conditioned to obtain zeolites in the Na-form. Ammonium adsorption onto natural zeolites depends mainly on the zeolite mineral type. The chabazite containing zeolite was superior over the four clinoptiolite samples for the removal of low concentrations of ammonium from water (pH of 7.5, flow 5 mL/min, room temperature). The adsorption capacity of chabazite was 48.3 mg NH4+/g zeolites, i.e. 73% of the theoretical exchange capacity 69 mg NH4+/g, during duration over 107 days and almost 6700 bed volumes exchanged. The four tested clinoptiolites had an ad-sorption capacity of 15.7mg to 25.0 mg NH4+/g zeolites. The natural zeolites were rapidly regenerated by an alkaline sodium chloride solution fed to the columns.

A culture-independent approach based on 16S rRNA gene clone library was used to analyze the bacterial community change both associated to the solids and in the liquid phase during pyrite bioleaching process. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA fragments revealed that the retrieved se-quences mainly related to genus Leptospirillum, genus Sulfobacillus and genus Acidithiobacillus. During the bioleaching process, genus Leptospirillum trends to grow associated to the solids while major of genus Sulfobacillus were in the liquid fase, only accounting little portion in the solids. Genus Acidithiobacillus can grow both on the solids and in the liquid phase, but accounting high portion on the solids.

Bioleaching method makes use of bacteria in solving metallic sulphides, so that these bacteria tend to convert insoluble metal sulphides into soluble sulphates. Since the kinetics description of this process is inevitable for better interpretation of relation between metabolism and growth of live organisms, as well as optimization of metals extraction processes, in this paper, this description is represented and designed in mathematic (kinetics) model for copper sulphide minerals based on Monod kinetics model. According to this model, special growth rate of bacteria (?) is a hyperbola function of restrictive substrate concentration (S). By Solving and developing of Monod kinetics model, a comprehensive kinetics model for bioleaching of copper sulphide minerals results. The designed is also applicable for other metal sulphides.

Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

The Republic of Tajikistan has large mercury-antimony deposit. The Republic takes the second place in the countries of the CIS by having antimony recourses or the fourth place in the world. Recently, on the mine bottom horizons the resources of gold were found. Gold in the data ore is submitted as nanosize particles. Results of ores enrichment of bottom horizons of Djijikrut deposit are obtained by a method of flotation. The flow sheet includes the rougher flotation, two scavenging flotation and two cleaner flotation. As a result of enrichment of ore, the mercury-antimony concentrate with the contents of 51.5% of antimony and recovery 90.3% from ore with the content of mercury of 3.5% was received. The investigation of thallium, selenium, and tellurium distributions on products of enrichment was carried out. The most effective reagents are a mixture of oksafore and butyl xanthogenate. While applying this mixture of reagents it is possible to refuse of the use of activator - nitrate lead. The behavior of gold is in details investigated during enrichment. To collective flotation concentrate is extracted only 30% of gold. The basic quantity of gold concentrates in tailings of flotation and is not taken by existing traditional methods. The alternative innovative technology of gold extraction was created. Various methods of roasting of a collective mercury - antimony concentrate oxidizing and reducing are investigated. Vacuum distillation of concentrate allocation in serial sublimates mercury and antimony was designed. In the received calcine concentrates gold. At additional roasting of a calcine up to 900°? concentration of gold makes 30.6 g/t. The offered innovational technology in a complex allows to process ores and concentrates unique mercury-antimony?gold bearing raw material. Spherical grinding media (balls) are the most widely used media for comminution of ores by grinding. A modelling simulation study of the behavior of two grinding media in the grinding process was conducted to determine the possible advantages of the new shape milling bodies called tetraballpebs. Tetraballpebs are in the shape of tetrahedrons with spherical convex walls. A three dimensional CAD model of the mill drum with a diameter of 1200 mm was used. A continuous operating mode was simulated in terms of the 3D contact elements of the model (milling bodies and mill drum). Simulation tests were carried out in a typical grinding mode and at a typical rotational speed of the drum mill (75 per cent of the critical speed in cataracting mode). Studies carried out with both grinding media include equal number of milling bodies with the same weight and volume. Having thus ensured a uniform mass of the grinding media and same number of milling bodies, and constant other conditions and process parameters, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of the shape of the milling bodies on the grinding process. Eight oil sand ores with the bitumen content ranging between 3.6 and 15 wt.% and the fines content (-44 micrometers size fraction) between 9 and 69 vol.% were subjected to the standard alkali extraction test used to measure the degree of oxidation of metallurgical coals. The results showed that there is a strong correlation between the absorbance of extracted solutions at a wavelength of 520 nm and the ratio of the fines content to the bitumen content. The latter factor is directly relevant to assessing the extractability of bitumen from oil sand ores. Bitumen extraction tests showed that the bitumen recovery decreased from 90 % to 30 % when the absorbance at 520 nm increased from 0.23 to 0.64. A comparison of the UV/visible spectra of solutions obtained from the alkali extraction tests with solutions of Aldrich Humic Acids suggest that low bitumen/high fines oil sand ores release substantial amounts of organic matter very similar, if not identical, to humic acids. In contrast, high-bitumen and low-fines ores do not release as much of the organic matter, and UV spectra of these leached substances are quite different from those of humic acids. Overall, the results show that chemical composition of bitumen in the tested ores varies greatly with ore type and oxidation, and that the alkali extraction test is a promising technique to quickly assess the extractability of bitumen from a given ore type.

The challenges of nature for the recovery of metals for a sustainable future continue to present in diverse ways. Base metal deposits are becoming lower grade and more complex. Rare earth metal demand is soaring and must certainly be met from new sources outside of China. Precious metals have soared in value due to increased industrial usage and the importance of these metals as financial instruments. Many of the future sources of precious metals are complex and difficult to process. The field of hydrometallurgy plays an important role in providing technology for extraction of these metals for a sustainable future. Selected examples from the base, rare and precious metals fields will be used to illustrate how current developments are providing metals for our future. The recovery of rare earths by beneficiation, leaching, purification, precipitation will be described from a multi-mineral deposit in Canada. The recovery of metals from complex base and precious metal ores may be accomplished using chloride ? assisted high temperature pressure leaching. Finally, by way of example, the enhanced Galvanox? process for treatment of chalcopyrite concentrates using silver-activated pyrite as a catalyst will be illustrated. This process offers a viable alternative to the conventional smelting of chalcopyrite copper concentrates.

In many base metal sulphide concentrators reagents such as collector and cyanide are often added to the grinding mill as well as to the flotation circuit. Whilst good reasons can be cited for splitting the reagent addition in this way, the benefits of such are rarely quantified and the complex reagent-mineral-media interactions occurring during milling are often poorly understood in terms of pulp chemistry. A new laboratory batch grinding mill designed by Magotteaux allows the user to measure, monitor, and control the pulp chemical conditions during grinding when testing different ores and media. Some of these parameters include pulp pH, pulp Eh, temperature, gaseous atmosphere, and dissolved oxygen concentration. In a recent development, the mill has been coupled with a simple on-line reagent monitoring system, designed by CSIRO, which allows the levels of species such as xanthate and cyanide in the grinding pulp to also be measured continuously during milling using a robust UV detection system. In this way the uptake of collector during grinding and the rate and ex-tent of cyanide interaction with the minerals and media can be determined as a function of grinding time. A series of grinding tests using an Australian nickel sulphide ore was conducted with the coupled system in which the cyanide dose, xanthate dose, and media type were systematically varied. The xanthate and cyanide levels were monitored as a function of grinding time and the data collected are discussed in terms of the pulp chemistry of the system and implications for plant reagent dosing strategies.

Rotor speed is one of the key hydrodynamic parameters in froth-flotation and it plays an important role in bubble-particle attachment. Laboratory scale studies for optimizing the rotor speed to achieve maximum flotation rate constant (K) of quartz, ground by ball mill, are. Purity of quartz was 99.4 percent and d80 of ball mill product was 230 µm. Each size fraction was separately subjected to flotation at three different rotor speeds, namely, 1200, 1000 and 800 rpm, and the flotation rate constant was calculated. The results showed that the flotation rate constant was high at the rotor speed of 1200 rpm. The flotation rate constants achieved at 1200 rpm were 8.676, 8.232, 7.818, 7.248, 7.068 and 6.984 min-1forthesize fractions of +300, -300+250, -250+212, -180+150, -150+125 and -125+106 µm, respectively. Limestone is used for neutralization of acid leachates in a number of hydrometallurgical processes. The aim of this study was to clarify how limestone ground to different particle sizes can neutralize sulfuric acid. The laboratory scale ball mill was used in grinding experiments carried out using ball sizes of 20, 30 and 40 mm and volumetric slurry densities of 30, 40 and 50 percents. Varied grinding times were used in order to produce limestone samples with different particle size classes on which the neutralization potential and rate were determined. The results of the study showed that the neutralization potential of limestone is not dependent on its particle size between 5 and 120 µm. However, the particle size strongly affected the neutralization rate of sulfuric acid: The smaller the particle size, the higher the rate of neutralization. Thus, when optimizing the cost efficiency of the process, the optimal degree of grinding should be considered taking in account the required residence time in neutralization phase.

The process conditions and mineral characters of cleaning separation stage in magnetite concentration plant are studied in the paper, and the affecting factors and the methods to increase the concentrate grade are analysed and given. The BKJ cleaning special drum magnetic separator is developed specially for the cleaning stage according to process conditions and mineral character. The separation mechanism, structure characters, separation process and excellent adaptability of BKJ special magnetic separator are described. The results in Zhangjiawa Concentration Plant show that the BKJ special drum magnetite separators play an important role in increasing the concentrate grade and improving the economic benefit.

The floatability of andalusite and associated minerals are studied and their action mechanisms of andalusite and associated minerals with collector alkyl benzene sulphonate are also studied. Through the mensuration of electrical potential and the infrared spectroscopy, as well as desorption tests, it is confirmed that the interaction of andalusite with sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS), is in addition to physical adsorption, but also is chemical adsorption. The study results of the pure minerals are used for the flotation of actual andalusite mineral. By flotation from contain-ing 45.68% andalusite ore, the fine andalusite concentrate is gained which Andalusite grade is 85.88%, containing Al2O355.29% and Fe2O3 less than 1.5%.
