"Mine tailings is one of the most important bulk industrial solid wastes, but its rate of comprehensive utilization is relatively low. Efficient separation, recovery and utilization of the valuable components is one focus of the comprehensive utilization of tailings. Beneficiation recovery of the valuable minerals is the most direct comprehensive utilization method for tailings. There are generally different kinds of nonmetallic minerals contained in the nonferrous metal mine tailings, which are secondary mineral resources waiting for further developing and recovery. Comprehensive utilization test studies on fluorite in tungsten beneficiation tailings and feldspar in molybdenum beneficiation tailings have been carried out by author and good test results are achieved. Some of the technologies developed in the test study have been applied in industrial productions, which have been working well. The economic, social and environmental benefits are remarkable. Our test studies and some production practices will be summarized and current situation and existing problems of comprehensive utilization for nonferrous metal mine tailings will also be discussed. Ca-containing gangue minerals such as Fluorite, Calcite have same surface activity point--calcium ions and approximate floatability with scheelite, it is difficult to achieve good dressing index of rough concentrate of scheelite. Mono-mineral experiments and ore tests indicate that, according to mineral composition, gangue minerals can be inhibited selectively by adopting suitable regulators, then the separation of scheelite from gangue minerals can be realized effectively. Mechanism analysis was taken by zeta potentials measurements and FTIR tests. Good dressing indexes are also obtained in practical ore tests and industrial tests. Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

This study covers the tests to develop separation process for production of clay and colemanite rich concentrates, and aims to serve the clay and colemanite concentrates extracted from the tailing dams to the industrial applications. For this purpose, samples from the tailing dams in Kestelek Boron Plant (Turkey) with an average B2O3 content of 8%~11 % were subjected to the investigations. The separation process of hydrocyclone--to make clear the way to obtain either clean clay or cole-manite--was initially discussed. Therefore, following the gentle scrubbing (to keep the bimodal size distribution between clay and colemanite) of the tailings to disperse the slurry, two alternative multistage hydrocyclone processes; allowing to recycling the overflows or underflows to concentrate clay and colemanite were respectively tested. As a result of the preliminary tests, the multistage hydrocyclone separation in direction to the clean colemanite concentrates (recycling the underflows) gave the better separation efficiencies. So, all the parameters such as apex and vortex finder diameters and feeding pressures were examined with the multistage hydrocyclone process allowing the recycling the underflows. The detailed multistage hydrocyclone separation process of the tailing dam wastes yielded with colemanite concentrates (approx. 12 % of the feed, w/w) with B2O3 content of 35.0 % and the clay concentrates (approx. 42 % of the feed, w/w) with B2O3 content of 2.1 %. Colemanite concentrates were found good enough either to re-feed in to the separation process or to keep upgrading for final product ready to use in Industry whereas the attempts on production of light bricks from clay concentrates has failed. But it is worth to point out that these clay concentrates can be used for agricultural purposes just in the form as it is.

This paper focuses on the influence of pulp oxygen content on the separation of pentlandite and pyrrhotite contained in two different process streams in the Clarabelle Mill, operated by VALE INCO. The two process streams are (i) the scavenger cleaner feed, the product of regrinding the thickened, scavenged concentrate and the B cleaned tail produced from treating the non-magnetic fraction of the milled run of mine ore, and (ii) the magnetic concentrate which is the magnetic fraction of the milled run of mine ore. In the Clarabelle Mill, sulphite (SO32-) and TETA (triethylenete-tramine) are together used to selectively depress pyrrhotite from pentlandite. These depressants pre-ferentially decompose collector and/or sulphur enriched species at the pyrrhotite surface, an appar-ently essential mechanism in pyrrhotite depression from the scavenger cleaner feed stream. Selectivity in depression may originate from differences in the electrochemical rest potential of pyrrhotite and pentlandite. As both minerals are susceptible to oxidation, aeration in conditioning and flotation plays a key role in selective flotation. India is the 5th largest producer of steel in the world and is slated to produce more than 180 Mt by 2020. Expectedly about 50 % of this would be through the Blast furnace route and the rest through Sponge iron / DRI route. Considering that there will not be any major change in iron making technology by that time, the Blast operation would require lump ore (10-40mm) with around 64% Fe grade and sinter fines (<10mm) with 60% Fe (min) as its feed. DRI process would need calibrated ore of size 5-18 mm as the most suitable size of feed. It is also expected that of the total requirement of ore for the DRI route a significant part would be DRI pellets. In India, there is considerable debate going on regarding the technology to be adopted for the processing of iron ore and there is a lack of clear consensus. The above scenario indicates that the processing requirement of iron ore in the country would involve both washing technology as well as beneficiation technology. CDE Asia Ltd is in the forefront of iron ore processing in the country and the experience gained by the company over the last few years of functioning has led the company to believe that route to be adopted depends on the end product requirement and the starting grade of the feed. Keeping in mind the nature of the feed required for the Blast furnace & DRI operation; it is obvious that good washing technology would be highly beneficial to the iron ore industry. Depending on the grade of ore available the limits of washing will be decided and equipment for lump ore beneficiation such as jigs could be incorporated into the washing circuit. Scrubbing of ore either before washing or selectively scrubbing the lumps could be necessary. Very low grade ore and jig rejects would be required to be totally ground and beneficiated for the production of pellet feed in order to utilize the iron ore resources entirely. Another source of ore for pelletisation would be slimes generated from the washing process as well as the huge quantities already available in the tailings dams in the operating mines. Deslimimg and magnetic route of beneficiation could release at 30-40% of the Fe locked up in these tailings ponds/dams. The paper describes the concept with examples from operating plants and proposes how the adoption could be engineered through test work and proper plan of integration. "In this work, a novel compound 4-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole was first synthesized and its selective adsorption mechanism on the surface of chalcopyrite was comprehensively investigated using UV-vis spectra, zeta potential, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectrscpy Measurements(XPS), and Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and first principle calculations. The experimental and computational results consistently demonstrated that AMT would chemisorb onto the chalcopyrite surface by the formation of a five-membered chelate ring. The first principle periodic calculations further indicated that AMT would prefer to adsorb onto Cu rather than Fe due to the more negative adsorption energy of AMT on Cu on the chalcopyrite (001) surface, which was further confirmed by the coordination bonding energies of AMT-Cu and AMT-Fe based on the simplified cluster models at a higher accuracy level (UB3LYP/Def2TZVP). The bench scale results indicated that the selective index improved significantly when using AMT as a potential chalcopyrite depressant in Cu-Mo flotation separation.INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is one of the most important processes to separate valuable minerals from gangue by taking advantage of differences in the physical chemistry of their surface properties(Laitinen et al., 2014), particularly in their surface hydrophobicity. Hydrophobicity differences between valuable and gangue minerals could be regulated by adding different chemical additives (surfactants)(Kor, Korczyk, Addai-Mensah, Krasowska, & Beattie, 2014), such as collector and depressant. It could be conducted economically to selectively separate and enrich the complicated and/or poor ores, by adopting appropriate surfactants. For example, the beneficiation of molybdenite usually relies on a two-stage process to realize flotation separation of molybdenite from other unwanted sulphide ores(Wie & Fuerstenau, 1974). In the first step, a bulk molybdenite concentrate is produced by utilizing kerosene/ diesel oil and pine oil/alcohols as collector and frother, respectively. Second, sodium hydrosulphide, sodium cyanide, ammonium sulphide, or Nokes reagent are adopted as depressants in the separation stage. However, these depressants are usually toxicant and cannot meet the requirements of environmental protection. A large number of efforts have been taken to develop alternative environmentally-friendly depressants (Ansari & Pawlik, 2007; J. H. Chen, Lan, & Liao, 2013; Li et al., 2015; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhai, & Guan, 2017; Yin, Sun, Hu, Zhang, Guan, Liu, et al., 2017; Yin et al., 2016). Although some novel and environmental-friendly depressants have been reported to achieve good performance in Cu-Mo flotation separation at a laboratory scale, there are still some challenging problems, including toxicity, high price or poor performance in practice, which severely limit their practical applications in Cu-Mo flotation separation on a commercial scale."

India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. The process technology adopted and modified to suit the altered requirements as well as the future trends are outlined.

This paper explores the relationship between the rheological behaviour and mineralogical nature of three different natural ore types. Rheological measurements performed here on Platreef, Kimber-lite and Norseman-Wiluna ores are correlated with the variation of phylosilicate mineral content in these ores and the corresponding physical properties of selected phylosilicate mineral groups. Preliminary results show that the clay mineral group (talc) has the least effect on both Bingham yield stress and viscosity of the three ore slurries tested, whereas the serpentine mineral group has a dramatic increasing effect on the Bingham yield stress especially at very low solid volume fractions. The Bingham viscosity of the mineral slurry appears to be the most influenced by the presence of the swelling clay mineral group (smectite). Significant increases in either Bingham yield stress or viscosity due to elevated contents of these problematic phylosilicate mineral groups are likely to cause negative effects on the processing and manageability of mineral slurries but it is unclear which is likely to have a more detrimental effect.

The Bayer process used for refining bauxite to smelting grade Alumina serves as the linchpin of the Aluminum production industry worldwide. Even though the process is well established, the presence of impurities in the liquor affects the quality of product and imposes a major economic cost on the industry. This review article focuses on the issues pertaining to Gibbsitic (Al2O3.3H2O) precipitation circuit. The comprehensive review provides a basic understanding of the aluminum trihydrate precipitation and agglomeration phenomena. Crystal growth rate and agglomeration play a significant role in determining the output PSD of agglomerates. Hence, the effect of certain thermodynamic and hydrodynamic parameters along with the impact of impurities (oxalates, aldols, acids etc.) and additives on hydrate growth has been reviewed.

"This paper reports the hydrometallurgical treatment of gravity concentrates of gold samples and outcrops associated with graphite ores obtained from:- flotation tailings of crystalline graphite minerals- outcrop samples of graphitic rock associated with auriferous minerals and free gold located in the Villa Union district and surrounding areas - La Rioja Province - Argentina.Previous studies of the flotation potential of crystalline graphite minerals failed to consider the presence of noble metals.The samples represent a mineralized zone of crystalline graphite which is distributed in different formations with a NE - SW trend in Maz, Punta Colorada and Las Ramaditas hills, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers.The most important variables affecting the leaching process, such as grain size, mineralogical species, reagent consumption, and so on, were previously studied. (Weiss, L.1985)On the basis of the present study results, the possible definition of an economically viable mineralization will be analyzed to define an auriferous district."

In this paper, an evaluation about the process mineralogy of the rich iron mine in Mongolia with comprehensive methods is given; this provides foundation of the comprehensive recovery of iron and cobalt in the ore. The research shows that the iron?s grade is 61.23%, Co?s grade is 0.02%, the ore is rich iron ore and its Co content also reaches border mining grade. For the ore, if want get high grade iron concentrate powder, must identify the mineral composition and the occurrence of iron and take into ac-count the recovery of Co content as associated resources. Chemical phase analysis results show that 86.35% of iron exists in magnetite, which means that the theoretical recovery ratio of iron is close to 86%. Minerals spectrum analysis confirmed that the magnetite containing a small amount of Mg, Al, and other impurities, the actual iron minerals to 70.28%, which means that theoretically iron grade iron concentrate only close to 70.28%. Based on the result of iron chemical phase analysis, by investigating the liberation of sulfide minerals and gangue, the recovery index of iron can be forecasted, when grinding fineness is 35%, 45%, 55% and 65% bellow 0.074mm,theoretical content of Fe in iron concentrate separately is 67.71%,67.88%,68.78%,and 69.43%,accordingly the theoretical recovery of Fe is 87.38%,87.05%,86.92% and 86.63%. From the perspective of process mineralogy, the forecast mineral beneficiation indicators show that the ore is easy sorting ore, iron processing operations have higher recovery rate, but wants sorting of high-grade iron ore concentrate still need appropriate grinding fineness. Furthermore, associated element Co, existing mostly in pyrite and pyrrhotite, is valuable in the ore. Pyrite and pyrrhotite have ideal liberation under grinding, so cobalt can be easily enriched in sulfide concentrate.

The paper introduced bio-oxidation plants of refractory gold concentrate in China and CCGRI cultures. CCGRI cultures are composed of bacteria and archaea. Archaea Ferroplasma acidiphilum is very thick and fills whole mineral surface. It plays a more dominant role in CCGRI process. Several years of practice has proved that the operating temperature in bioreactors between 38~52?,gold recovery is almost same. Pulp concentration has been increased each year and reached to 25%.

"In this paper, an alternative beneficiation process was developed to recover nickel minerals from low-grade weathered ores. The studied sample, 0.3% Ni grade, is essentially composed of nickel sulfides (pyrrhotite and pentlandite); magnetite and silicates (mostly talc and amphibolites) are the primary gangue minerals. The particle size distribution was controlled using a grinding operation to avoid producing an excess of fine particles by overgrinding. The sample underwent a grinding step for the fine degree of liberation. The slimes (-20 ?m) were removed via two desliming stages in hydrocyclones (diameters of 1.5" and 2"); the ground material, which was classified in a range of (-150+20) ?m, was processed by column flotation in three different stages: rougher flotation for magnesium silicates, rougher flotation for sulfides, and cleaner flotation for sulfides, using pilot flotation columns (2" and 6" in diameter and 20 ft high). The goal of using the preliminary magnesium silicate flotation step was to remove hydrophobic minerals (mostly talc) that would float naturally with the sulfides, which would decrease the Ni grade in the concentrate, as well as to reduce the MgO content because this compound is considered harmful in metallurgical processes when a grade greater than 9% is used. The final concentrate obtained in the cleaner flotation step reached up to 2% Ni and 7.0% MgO. The global and flotation recoveries in the process were approximately 30% and 60%, respectively, due to the losses of Ni during the desliming process. Despite this low global recovery, the adopted beneficiation process can be considered an interesting alternative to produce nickel concentrate from tailings or waste materials."

Based on the characteristics of typical marine sedimentary phosphate rock in Guizhou, Southwest China, together with the research findings made on the surface electric properties of pure collophanites taken from different areas in pure water and under the action of collectors, a pure minerals flotation test of collophanite was conducted in this research. The differences of collophanite flotation behavior and the effects of the different pH values, varieties, and dosage of collector on flotation separation of collophanite were studied. It is suggested that that in pure water, collophanite had a negative charge within a wide pH range. The electro negativity values of collophanite increased with the addition of collectors GJBW and WF-01. When GJBW and WF-01 were used as collectors, the collophanite was depressed in acid medium, but had a good flotability in basic medium.

Kimberlite weathering has been a topic of ongoing research within De Beers for many years. Using kimberlite weathering as an alternative to crushing has many advantages e.g. power and reducing diamond breakage. Weathering could also possibly be used in conjunction with crushing just to weaken the material and reduce power consumption. These forces have driven current research to investigate whether kimberlite weathering could be utilised for these reasons. Weathering in this context does not refer to weathering over long period of time but rather to disintegration of the material in aqeous media in relative short time periods. Previous published work discussed that the presence of smectite renders kimberlite weatherable and that the amount of smectite determines the rate of weathering (Morkel and Vermaak, 2006). The current work investigates whether cation ex-change or the adsorption of organic species in the smectite interlayer could influence the observed weathering behaviour. The results show that cation exchange does take place in the presence of cation species and that the weathering behaviour can be drastically improved with especially Cu2+ cations. Concentration and time effects of the weathering was also investigated. Weathering tests with organic species such as ethanol, methanol, edta, pentanol, butanol, acetic acid and oxalic acid was performed. The results show that organic species does improve weathering but under these testing conditions was not as effective as cations.

The molybdenum ores currently utilized in China are mostly molybdenum sulfide ores whereas oxidized molybdenum ores, being finely disseminated and difficult to process, have not been exploited and utilized effectively. In this article the beneficiation process of a molybdenum ore occurred in an oxidized ore zone was investigated in order to provide a new way for the development and utilization of the oxidized molybdenum ores in China. The molybdenum mineral in the ore was mainly wulfenite and the associated minerals included barite, limonite, quartz and small amount of cerusite. Limonite in the ore occurred in a crust and honeycomb-like colloidal state and composed the framework for the formation of the other minerals in the ore, which filled the pores in the framework. Wulfenite was mainly fine-grained and occurred in the fine porous crust and honeycomb-like framework. The finely disseminated ore structure made the separation and recovery of the molybdenum mineral in the ore very difficult. On the basis of the mineralogical study of the ore, experiments were conducted to compare the various mineral processing methods for the beneficiation of the ore, including single gravity concentration, single magnetic separation, single flotation, and a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration. The results indicated that with single gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 5.85 % Mo with a yield of 11.76 % and a Mo recovery of 43.5 % was produced. With single high intensity magnetic separation it was very hard to obtain a molybdenum concentrate product. With single flotation process a molybdenum concentrate containing 7.06 % Mo with a yield of 15.14 % and a Mo recovery of 62.63 % was produced. With a combination of high intensity magnetic separation and gravity concentration a molybdenum concentrate containing 6.46 % Mo with a yield of 11.81 % and a Mo recovery of 42.11 % was produced. In conclusion, compared to the other methods the flotation process can produce more reasonable technological and economical results and is the best process for the exploitation and utilization of the finely disseminated oxidized molybdenum ore.

"Comprehensive utilization of Bi and Sn from the tin-associated polymetallic tailings by “gravity separation – flotation combination process” has been studied, which was verified that the novel process is an effective method to deal with the high content pyrrhotite tin-associated polymetallic tailings. In this investigation, ore property analysis and magnetism analysis of pyrrhotite were conducted to research and develop reasonable beneficiation flowsheet. The results of ore property analysis present that pyrrhotite was not closely related to bismuth and tin minerals. Particle size analysis results indicated that pyrrhotite was mainly in the form of fine particles. The magnetic analysis results show that pyrrhotite was distribution in all the three types of pyrrhotite in a single mining area, which indicated that variable magnetism of with different crystal structure pyrrhotite. The process of “low intensity magnetic separation - high intensity magnetic separation” shown an excellent adaption for the high content pyrrhotite tin-associated polymetallic ore compared with the single flotation process based on the magnetism variable of pyrrhotite. The results of whole process test indicated that a bismuth coarse concentrate assaying 5.63% of Bi at 81.77% recovery was obtained, which treat the conditions for the Bi-S separation flotation. In addition, the content of sulfur in the tin concentrate decreased from 2.5% to 1.5%, which provided a new reference for other tin-associated polymetallic tailings.
