Underhand mining with cemented mill tailings for backfill has proven to be a safe and effective alternative to conventional overhand mining for rockburst prone mines. The ability of the cemented sandfill to survive a rockburst shock wave without failing has been observed at mines in the Coeur d?Alene Mining District many times in the last twenty years. To better understand the dynamic loading of this commonly used support material the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed laboratory experiments using a split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) to quantify the maximum stress and energy absorption of cemented mill tailings from the Galena mine. Cylindrically shaped cemented backfill specimens aged 28 days were placed in the split Hopkinson pressure bar testing apparatus and a dynamic load was applied. The measured peak dynamic compressive strength of the cemented sandfill was 10.6 MPa (1540 psi) and is approximately twice the static unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 5.5 MPa (800 psi). These test data showed about 95% of the initial energy was reflected away from the backfill and only 5% of the energy was absorbed. This may help to explain why backfilled stopes could withstand seismic events up to 3.5 Richter magnitude (Ml). When a compressive rockburst wave impacts a stope a large amount of the stress and energy is reflected away. The reflected wave is a tensile wave which creates tensile cracks and spalling in the entire wall of the stope. The backfill supports the damaged wall rock and holds it in place. Some of the stress and energy of the rockburst is transmitted into the backfill and because the backfill is being dynamically loaded it has a strength that is twice its static value and absorbs a substantial amount of rockburst energy. Although mining in deep underground mines is an extremely hazardous occupation, the use of underhand mining with cemented backfill for static and dynamic ground control increases the safety of the workers.

In 1991, local prospector C. ?Mickey? Clement recovered at least three alluvial diamonds from the Michipicoten River. Two of these stones were sent to the Department of Mineralogy, Royal Ontario Museum, where they were identified as industrial grade diamonds with weights of 1.05 and 1.13 carats. Both stones were described as frosted and graphite-inclusion riddled. In 1995, prospector Sandor Surmacz and geologist Marcelle Hauseux discovered diamonds in bedrock approximately 20 km north of the Michipicoten River. An 18.1-kg bulk sample of a xenolith-rich lamprophyre, taken from an outcrop at the side of the Trans Canada Highway north of Wawa, yielded 1 macro diamond and 5 micro diamonds. All but one was gem quality (Sage 2000). Since then, more than 36 occurrences of diamonds in bedrock have been reported in an approximately 30 km2 area centred 20 km north of the town of Wawa. The occurrences are hosted within a sequence of unusual, Archean-aged, heterolithic breccias previously considered to have no economic significance. Ten kimberlite occurrences also have been confirmed in the Michipicoten greenstone belt in the last 5 years. Two of these kimberlites are diamondiferous. To date, expenditures on property acquisition and diamond exploration in the Wawa are estimated at $120 million (CAN). This paper summarizes the geological observations made on these occurrences and discusses including the relationship between the occurrences and the regional geology.

"Minera Escondida operates two open pits on a porphyry copper district, southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. During 2005, ore will be delivered exclusively from one pit to two concentrators, while from 2006 both pits will provide ore to these plants. Annual testing programmes on drillhole samples, have allowed for the construction of hardness block models since 2000. These models have delivered two main hardness descriptors, the Bond work index and the SAG power index. These parameters and plant operational specifications have been used as input information to forecast, the expected throughput and ball mill product size (P80) for each block of ore. Two forecasting techniques have been used, an in house model, strongly dependant of bond work index and MinnovEx´s CEET2, dependant of Bond work index and Sag power index and other parameters. Model performance has been evaluated from reconciliating on a monthly basis, the forecasted throughputs against a recalculated plant throughput which accounts for losses in tonnage not caused by ore hardness but instead by unscheduled plant operation problems. The model performance for 2003 was ± 2% yearly and ± 5% quarterly, well within the expected ± 3% and ± 10%. Conventional approaches to estimating reserves and optimizing mine planning and production forecasting result in single, often biased forecasts. This is largely due to the non-linear propagation of errors in understanding orebody attributes from a limited finite number of drilling data, throughout the chain of mine planning and mining. A new mine planning paradign is considered herein to include two interacting and potentially fusing elements: stochastic simulation and stochastic optimization. These two elements provide an expanded mathematical framework that allows the modelling of orebody uncertainty and its direct integration to mine design, production planning and valuation of mining projects and operations. This stochastic framework has shown to increase the value of production schedules in the order of 25%. In addition, case studies show that stochastic optimal pit limits are about 15% larger in terms of total tonnage, compared to the conventional (deterministic) optimal pit limits. This difference extends life of mine and adds approximately 10% of net present value (NPV) to the NPV reported above from stochastic production scheduling within the conventionally optimal pit limits. Furthermore, results suggest a potential new contribution to the sustainable utilization of natural resources.

"As part of the Namew Lake project a mill was constructed to treat 1900 tpd of ore grading approximately 0.90% CU and 2.45% Ni to produce copper and nickel concentrates.Nickel occurs mainly as pentlandite and violarite while copper occurs as chalcopyrite. Two main ore types are present1 lower grade disseminated sulphides in a talcose ultramafic gangue and a higher grade solid sulfide with a granitic breccia matrix.Primary crushed ore from underground is treated on surface in a conventional closed circuit crushing plant using 2-stage cone crushing. Crushed ore is conveyed to storage and then fed at a controlled rate to a grinding circuit employing a rod and ball mill with hydrocyclone classification. Rougher flotation separates and cleans nickel and copper sulfides from waste materials followed by a high lime separation circuit to separate the minerals into final concentrates. Dewatering is achieved through use of high capacity thickeners and pressure filters prior to delivery to a loadout area. The crushing and milling control is highly automated.Plant design was based on metallurgical samples obtained from drill cores. After the first year of operations, plant results compared favourably with design projections.INTRODUCTIONThe Namew Lake Project is a joint venture partnership between Outokumpu Mines Ltd. (Canada) and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (60%). The project included construction of a mine and milling complex to treat approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of copper-nickel ore grading o.91% and 2.44% Ni. Known reserves are estimated at 2. 65 million tonnes. The deposit is located approximately 65 km south of Flin Flon (120 km by road) and about 5 km east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. The decision to construct a concentrating facility was made June 15, 1987 and construction started a week later. The facility, designed for 1900 tonne per day throughput, was ready for commissioning in September 1988. Outokumpu Engineering of Finland was chosen to prepare metallurgical flowsheets, select and develop plant layouts, and provide construction management. Kilborn (Toronto) contributed detailed engineering for civil, structural, mechanical and electrical components and outokumpu Equipment of Canada, the design, the supply, and commissioning of the instrumentation package. Hudson Bay undertook the initial metallurgical test work and preliminary design work."

"Each and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Several factors including ore heterogeneity and harsh production environment affect the reproducibility of the reported data. Best practices of metal accounting thus prescribe that production reports be accompanied by measurement quality reports quantifying the reproducibility (a data quality metric often expressed as a relative standard deviation) of each data reported. Ignoring the irreproducibility of measurements may lead to the perception that random errors have been totally eliminated through statistical data reconciliation, which is wrong. This paper aims at explaining the full lifecycle management of reproducibility estimation from the outset at the measurement process to its reporting after having been through the statistical data reconciliation process. Indeed, the reproducibility of reported data can be obtained by performing a sensitivity analysis. Necessary conditions for obtaining a truly representative assessment of measurement reproducibility are stated. Typical levels of measurement reproducibility found in operating flotation plants are also reported. These numbers can be used as benchmarks for reproducibility levels that can be realistically expected.IntroductionEach and every flotation plant must produce daily/weekly/monthly production reports in which metal balances for payable and penalising elements are presented. Such production reports are the most expected output from a metal accounting system (MAS). The duly recurrence of this task combined with an insufficient level of automation has somehow contributed to the misleading perception that it is mainly a clerical work. However, as shown in Figure 1, a MAS encompasses way more than just a reporting system. Acknowledging that the content of production reports indubitably origin from raw measurements has important implications for how both the reports and MAS should be monitored."

"An OK 300 cu. ft. Skim - Air cell was installed at the HBM&S concentrator in Flin Flon in 1987. Since that time, 3 additional OK Skim - Air cells have been installed in HBM&S concentrators. The cell treats a coarse 70% solids slurry with a residence time of 2.5 minutes. The product from the cell (a unit cell type application) is a final grade copper concentrate with high precious metal values. Since its installation, the cell has improved gold recovery by 10 - 15%. Process variables such as circulating load, pH, froth depth, feed size, and reagent additions all have an effect on the operation of the cell. Maintenance on the cell has been minimal. Initial operating problems involving level control have been significantly reduced and operations are now relatively trouble free. Although very successful at Flin Flon, site specific operating circumstances will determine the suitability of this cell. INTRODUCTIONHudson Bay Mining and Smelting operates four concentrators in Northern Manitoba. Three treat copper-zinc ores, the fourth mills a copper-nickel ore. The Flin Flan concentrator operates two circuits in parallel which treat copper and zinc ores from the Trout Lake and Callinan mines. Both circuits in the Flin Flan mill have Skim-Air cells integrated into the grinding circuits.The Trout Lake cell was installed first and had a payback period of a few months. Required modifications to the cell were made to enhance its performance. These included changing the discharge valve size, tuning the level controller, and installing an insert into the rubber valve sleeve to increase its wear life. The payback period on the Callinan cell was significantly reduced because these modifications were completed prior to its installation.The cells produce a final grade copper concentrate and since their installation gold and silver recoveries to the final copper concentrate have increased significantly. Operating parameters such as coarseness of cell feed dictate the metal recoveries and froth depth determines the selectivity of the cell and therefore the grade of the concentrate.The Skim-Air cell can be suitable in applications where a final product is generated. However, when a bulk concentrate, which requires further separation, is produced, the coarseness of the product may not make it amenable to conventional flotation.The Flin Flan mills Skim-Air cells have worked exceptionally well with little maintenance required."

"The operation of mineral processing equipments is intimately related to the mineral composition of the ore. However unit performances are usually characterized in terms of metal contents or recoveries as this data is easier to obtain than the mineral contents. This paper describes a method that combines the operations of material balancing and estimation of the mineral contents of the ore. The estimated mineral contents can be used for process analysis and diagnosis of operating problems.IntroductionThe ore that is feeding a concentrator is made of minerals that condition the energy requirements for the ore comminution and the performances of the subsequent separation circuit. Indeed a change in the mineral composition of the ore may lead to lower grinding mill throughput as well as lower recovery or grade of the economical products. Despite this relationship is recognized the mineral composition of the ore is seldom measured or estimated to provide regular information for the diagnosis of operating problems. Some methods such as the QEM-SCAN (Whiten, 2008; Lamberg and Vianna, 2006) are available to measure the concentration of the minerals in ore samples but the method is time demanding and plant operators usually base their evaluation of the plant performances on chemical assays of metals or elements since this data is easier to obtain from ore samples.Usually samples of the streams of mineral processing plants are collected on a daily basis to be assayed for strategic elements. The obtained concentrations are balanced to produce coherent data with the material conservation constraint and then used to characterize the day to day operation of the plant in terms of recovery of valuable metals and grades of the marketable concentrates. The behavior of contaminant elements can also be monitored from this data allowing the operators to explain for instance a lower zinc concentrate grade by a more important contamination of iron. However such diagnosis is only partial as the contaminant element can be transported by different minerals. Indeed the iron contamination of a zinc sulfide concentrate may be caused by an inadequate depression of pyrite or due to another iron carrying mineral. A possible way to answer the question is to determine the concentrations of the various minerals in the ore and produced sealable concentrates. Since measuring the mineral contents of the ore could be a demanding task one should consider to estimate this data from the daily chemical assays of the sample collected on the main streams of the circuit. Some authors have already investigated the problem. Whiten(2008) described a method to estimate the mineral contents of an ore sample. Lamberg and Vianna(2006) proposed a method to do a sequential mineral reconstruction followed by a material balance. Few of these methods account for the mass conservation of the reconstructed mineral contents."

"The development of Galfan, a new generation 95% zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy coating for steel, offers opportunities for greater fabrication flexibility and upgraded corrosion performance in automotive applications. The formability of Galfan is equivalent to that of electrogalvanized steel, based on laboratory tests and automotive component fabrication. Corrosion resistance of Galfan exceeds that of hot dip and electrogalvanized, including performance in automotive industry tests. Automotive production applications for deep drawn and stamped components in France and Germany are based on the ability to meet dual performance requirements for upgraded formability and corrosion resistance. The first U.S. Galfan application was on 1985 model Ford cars and light trucks for transmission oil cooler lines which has now expanded into a number of power steering tubing uses. IntroductionContinuing requirements for improved vehicle performance coupled with the ever present need for reduced cost have spawned the development of a number of new coated steel products. Among this new generation of coated steels is Gaifan™, a 95070 zinc-Solo aluminum-mischmetal hot dip alloy coating. Galfan exhibits particular promise for automotive use based on broad fabrication advantages and upgraded product performance(I ),The unique characteristic of Galfan is the key combination of greatly improved formability with much longer corrosion life. Galfan provides significantly better formability than any other hot dip coating. Testing shows that formability is limited primarily by the steel substrate to which the Galfan coating is applied. Galfan exhibits excellent resistance to flaking and microcracking during commercial forming operations. The result is the elimination of unnoticed damage to the coating which would show up later as premature rusting on the finished product."

Good mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets is required to avoid breakage and excessive deformation during their handling and further processing. However, green balls with good resistance to handling are often too plastic, which impacts the bed permeability in induration furnaces. Measurements of plasticity, bed void fraction and green ball sphericity as well as bed permeability were carried out on various samples of green iron ore pellets having different mechanical strength. Results show that bed void fraction, sphericity and permeability all depend, to some extent, upon green ball mechanical strength (plasticity). Understanding and controlling the mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets would then help to maximize both the productivity of the induration process as well as the quality of fired pellets through a more stable firing process. Results of research work carried out at COREM, with the objective of improving green ball characterization methods, are presented in this paper.

"With ever decreasing feed grades, finer mineralogy and increased demand for product, it became obvious that a major step in equipment performance was required to reduce operating costs and increase production. Offsite testwork indicated that a Centrifugal separator was capable of recovering fine tantalum and that the newly developed C Series Falcon concentrator would be capable of replacing many pieces of aging equipment and provide improved performance. Further investigation led to the rental and the purchase of a Falcon C20 concentrator followed by a C10 to maximize circuit performance.Falcon Concentrators Inc’ s practice of working with the customer mirrors Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada’s (Tanco) philosophy of continuous product development. This synergy honed valve design for continuous operation in a highly abrasive ore environment.Tanco has recently purchased two more Falcon concentrators for the recovery of additional tantalum from its spodumene circuit. These new units have additional user friendly operating features partially based on developments made at Tanco.The Falcon C Series units have enabled Tanco to maximize recovery of tantalum that was otherwise lost while using the original conventional gravity circuit."

"The mill of Anaconda Britannia Mines is located on the eastern shore of Howe Sound, approximately 32 miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. The mill has a daily capacity of 3400 to 3500 tons and at the present is treating chalcopyrite-pyrite ore from which only the copper mineral is concentrated. For a clear conception of concentrate filtering and shipping practice at Britannia perhaps a bit of past history should be related.For many years the mill concentrated copper and zinc minerals and intermittently a pyrite concentrate was produced. It was general practice to ship copper concentrate by towed barge down Howe Sound, across Juan de Fuca Strait and thence down Puget Sound to Asarco's smelter at Tacoma, Washington. Zinc concentrate was loaded in hopper bottom rail gondolas spotted on rail barges and towed to rail heads in Vancouver, thence by rail to Anaconda Reduction Works in Great Falls, Montana. Most of the pyrite produced was shipped by ocean freighters to Japan and Taiwan with an occasional barge load of 2000 to 4000 tons to nearby customers in Vancouver and the state of Washington.In recent years, because of smelter shut-downs for one reason or another, mostly strikes, a considerable amount of copper concentrates has been shipped by ocean freight to Japan and in 1971 several lots were loaded in gondola cars and shipped by rail to the Anaconda smelter in Anaconda, Montana, because Asarco's smelter was forced by municipal and state anti-pollution laws to limit the amount of S02 emission from the smelter stacks. Zinc concentrate production was halted in the early part of 1Y70 because of zinc depletion in the ores and pyrite production was stopped in May, 1971, because of a lack of markets.Filter equipment in the Britannia mill consists of conventional disc vacuum filters and reciprocating vacuum pumps. The copper concentrate filter was installed in 1923 as a 6 x 8'6"" American disc type manufactured by United Filter Corporation, The zinc concentrate filter, now converted as a spare for copper concentrates, is also a 6 x 8'611 American disc manufactured by Traylor Engineering and Manufacturing Company and was installed the same year. Formerly, there were, in addition, two 4 x 6' disc filters for pyrite and two 6 x 6' disc filters to de-water bulk flotation concentrates ahead of the regrind mills. Installed vacuum pumps were two Ingersoll Rand 22"" x 811 and one 22"" x 9"". One of the smaller machines has since been scrapped.At the time of the writer's transfer to Britannia in 1965, the entire filter system was operating as a unit using two vacuum pumps and a common filtrate tank with a 2"" SRL filtrate pump for five operating filters. The regrind and pyrite filters were in continuous operation and the co11p('r concentrate filter alternated with the zinc concentrate filter because both copper and zinc concentrates were transp0rted to storage by the same conveyor belt."

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. "The SART Process was introduced to the gold mining industry in the late 1990s and several commercial plants were built over the following 10 to 15 years. Most of these plants have operated well and enjoyed plant performance in line with expectations based on the underlying chemistry of the process. However, two of the plants have consistently suffered from high reagent consumption and poor product quality, which has motivated a re-examination of the process fundamentals in the hope of understanding the reasons for poor performance when it occurs, and developing mitigating strategies.This testwork along with a review of the relevant literature has demonstrated that the amount of sulphide added to the primary reactor, relative to the copper concentration, is the most critical parameter dictating plant performance, with pH and residence time important secondary factors. The primary product in the SART Process is synthetic chalcocite, Cu2S, and the stoichiometric requirement for sulphide addition is therefore 0.5 moles per mole of copper in solution. Testwork shows that when sulphide is added in excess of this amount (generally with the express purpose of lowering residual copper in solution) it not only fails in its intended purpose, but can have a negative impact on the settling and filtration characteristics of the copper sulphide product, as well as the final product quality. Moreover, these problems are exacerbated the higher the selected operating pH in the pH 3 to 5 range, and the longer the residence time of slurry in this pH range.Freshly precipitated copper sulphide compounds are known to be very fine and slimy, with poor settling and filtration characteristics. It is therefore important to engineer the SART Process in such a way as to encourage growth in the average particle size of the precipitate crystals. This was the rationale for recycling a portion of the thickener underflow to the primary reactor when the SART Process was developed. The theory of crystallization predicts that compounds of extremely low solubility, such as chalcocite (Cu2S: KSP = 10-48), are likely to experience growth in crystal particle size through aggregation rather than heterogeneous nucleation. On this basis, the SART practice of recycling a portion of thickener underflow to the primary reactor in the commercial plants is unlikely to lead to crystal growth via nucleation, and could in fact promote breakage of the aggregates that formed in the thickener. Recycling thickener underflow could therefore have the opposite of the desired outcome. The result of testwork that is reported here lends credence to this theory and questions the wisdom of recycling in the SART process.There is evidence to suggest that operating the copper sulphide thickener in the SART Process without flocculants may be beneficial. Thickener underflow densities could improve from the current 10 - 15% range to 40 - 50%. This will not only reduce the flowrate of slurry to the filter, but the filtration properties of the slurry (filtration rate, filter cake moisture content) will also improve. This is one of the most critical engineering and design aspects of the SART Process, and the achievement of high solids density in the thickener underflow will not only improve the health and safety aspects of the operation, but also has the potential to lower capital costs and improve the quality of the final product."

Rare earth elements (REE) and their compounds are critical ingredients in numerous necessities of modern life including: the permanent magnets used in electric motors, generators, speaker and hard drives; high performance automobile tires; catalysts; phosphors; optical glass; etc. World production of REE in 2014 was about 110,000 t with about 98,000 t/a being “Light” (LREE) and the balance “Heavy” (HREE). Unlike other mined commodities, the majority of the LREE produced in the world is a by-product and that from a single iron ore mine in China. The balance of the LREE production comes from four REE-only mines, two in China, one in Australia and one in the USA (now on Care and Maintenance basis). The LREE operations comprise very unusual flotation processes and complex hydrometallurgical plants. In contrast, most of the HREE come from a multitude of small in-situ leach operations exploiting a single, dispersed deposit in China using hydrometallurgy alone. All of the current REE operations produce an intermediate mixed REE product that must be separated to yield the high purity, individual, REE required by the market. This paper describes the processes being used to produce LREE and HREE intermediate products and the separation plants used to make the high purity REE compounds that are key ingredients in the magnets in earbuds, turbines, and automobiles; catalysts used in the production of gasoline, and so on.

"Abstract- The Dixie Zone Au-Ag deposit is a low sulfidation (adularia-sericite) epithermal system located 1.4 km from the producing Ken Snyder mine (7.0 M oz Au equivalent reserve/resource), Midas Mining District, north-central Nevada. This WNW striking, steep south dipping, fault system is hosted by mid-Miocene (17 Ma to 14 Ma) felsic volcanic rocks that were erupted from a vent(s) to the northeast. The system was mineralized by approximately 250 ± 20°C (n = 86), near-neutral pH, ascending fluids of predominantly meteoric origin [volatile corrected salinity = 0.52 ± 0.35 eq.wt% NaCl (n = 86)]. Bulk analytical fluid inclusion gas chromatography identified a mineralizing fluid volatile composition of 99.68 ± 0.18 mole % H2O, 0.16 ± 0.09 mole % CO2, 0.11 ± 0.05 mole percent N2, 0.05 ± 0.04 mole % CH4, and 0.01 ± 0.01 mole % CnHn+i (n = 7). Sulfur species were not analyzed due to absorption within the chromatography system; however, a H2S concentration of 16 ppm to 160 ppm molar is estimated. The volatile content contributes approximately 50% of the microthermometrically measured freezing point depression. Cl- concentrations up to approximately 9000 ppm suggest an additional, probably magmatic, fluid component.Ascending fluids were channelled along approximately NW striking faults related to the same primary extension (17 Ma to 14 Ma) responsible for Nevada basin and range physiography. Boiling induced by CO2 effervescence led to precipitation of Au and Ag over a 150 m vertical interval. At the time, this interval was about 460 m below the water table (approximately 38 bars), but because of erosion, it is now within 90 m of the surface. A Ag:Au ratio of 25:1 has been calculated for the Dixie Zone."

"The Red Dog mine has increased mill throughput most years since start-up. Although flotation equipment has been added over the last 10 years, the Red Dog metallurgical performance has been restricted by a lack of adequate flotation capacity. Two reduced tonnage trials conducted in 1997 as well as numerous SAG relines have consistently indicated the potential to significantly increase both zinc concentrate recovery and grade with additional flotation capacity. Later in 1999, a new circuit was designed with increased flotation capacity while simplifying the current circuit, providing for three stages of dilution cleaning, and creating a retreat section. The purpose of the retreat section is to target the more complex particles and allow the chemical environment to be fine tuned for improved iron depression. In total, 21 Outokumpu OK50 (50 m3) mechanical flotation cells and four 3.66 mØ column cells were added to the current flotation circuit. The VIP (value improvement program) mill optimization project is also addressing thickening, water treatment, and power generation issues and has a total budget of US$105 M. Start-up of equipment was phased in to minimize the impact on current operations and the project was completed by the end of 2001. IntroductionRed Dog Operations started production in November 1989. The mine is located above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska. It is linked by an 80 km road to a port-site facility where the concentrate is stored. Concentrate is shipped to markets throughout the world during the one hundred days of open seas. As of January 2002, the Red Dog main pit had 38.4 Mt of reserves grading 19.2% Zn, 5.3% Pb, and 102 g/t Ag. Additional reserves and resources contribute an additional 72 Mt at 15.6% Zn, 4.2% Pb, and 78 g/t Ag. Red Dog is a Mississippian to Permian, black shale-hosted, zinc-lead-silver deposit located in the DeLong Mountains, western Brooks Range, Alaska. All the rocks associated with the mineralizing event are considered to be part of the exhalite rock package. Silicification was a dominant component of the mineralizing event and the host shale has been silicified and locally resembles a chert. The major sulphides in decreasing order of abundance are sphalerite, pyrite, marcasite and galena. Most of the deposit’s silver occurs within the crystal structure of the galena. The dominant ore mineral, sphalerite, is very fine grained to amorphous and is commonly intergrown with silica. Ore textures are massive, fragmental, chaotic, veined and rarely show classic sulphide sedimentary layering. The upper portion of the orebody has been physically and chemically weathered. Oxidation has altered the sulphides to sulphates. The zinc and iron sulphates are very soluble and are readily depleted from the weathered cap, while the lead sulphate is residual and is, therefore, enriched."
