Mineral exploration assessment file information has long been considered a useful resource for developing mineral exploration strategies, and one of the most common data sets fled in assessment reports is ground magnetic surveys. The new Earth Resources and Land Information System database (ERLIS) now provides a method for rapidly accessing all references to a specific area through a series of raster images. The ERLIS provides access to the Assessment File Research Imaging (AFRI) database which comprises geo-science mineral exploration assessment file data, Mineral Deposits Inventory (MDI), together with provincial aeromagnetic data from the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines(MNDM). Conversion of the raster images of ground geophysical data to vector data files together with the concatenation of grids from adjacent claims provides a method for constructing high resolution magnetic regional images. The value of this resource is demonstrated through the construction of a single composite magnetic image derived from eight assessment file grids for an area south of Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within Pacaud and Catharine Townships. The composite grid of magnetic data provides a map with resolution that is not achieved by currently available Ontario Geological Survey airborne data sets. Details contained within the new high resolution image, permit the differentiation of lithologies and their boundaries, fault orientations and the location of alteration zones with magnetic response.

A novel process for the preparation of a-Al2O3 from secondary aluminum dross was studied. Factors including alkali dross ratio, salt dross ratio, smelting temperature, smelting time, leaching temperature, leaching time, and the solid-liquid ratio, which possibly influence the transfer of Al into water were studied, and the feasibility of using seed precipitation as a treatment technology of the leachate was discussed. The optimum condition of the process was determined as: alkali dross ratio 1.3, salt dross ratio 0.7, smelting temperature 500°C, smelting time 60min, leaching temperature 60°C, leaching time 30min, solid-liquid ratio 1:4. The results show that using the seed precipitation method, the leaching of aluminum reaches 92.71%, demonstrating the technique as a feasible and effective treatment technology of the leachate.

The evolution of microstructure is examined during the annealing of hot worked magnesium alloy AZ31. The influences of deformation and annealing conditions on the developed microstructures are assessed. It is found that annealing at a low temperature (300 °C), after deformation at a low temperature and strain rate (300 °C and 0.001 5-1 respectively), results in the development of abnormally large grains. With increasing values of Z (lower temperatures, higher strain rates), static recrystallization of the dynamically recrystallised structure takes place; smaller annealed grain sizes are attained and the time at which coarsening begins is reduced. Whilst both the deformation and annealing conditions influence the time it takes to reach a stable annealed microstructure, the grain size attained is governed solely by the prior deformation conditions employed.

Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

Abstract -The Ûrkút rhodochrosite deposit and Branisko Mn showings (rancieite, manganiferous calcite), located in Lower Jurassic marine sedimentary rocks with black shale, were studied by organic­ geochemical methods. Both depositionallocalities were affected by the Lower Jurassic Toarcian anoxic event. Ûrkút shales are rich in organic matter (av. 2.94 wt% total organic carbon), the composition of which indicates derivation mainly from marine sources, with some terrigenous component. The shales matured in a bacterially active environment under reducing conditions of diagenesis-catagenesis. Branisko shales (?0.2 wt% TOC) with lenses of Mn oxide ore were weakly metamorphosed and their organic matter thermally degraded. The model for Mn carbonate ore formation envisages reaction of Mn derived from sediments, with carbonate generated by a bacterially mediated process of decom­ position of organic matter that also involved Mn reduction.

The Cameco Key Lake mill began processing U-bearing waste rock from the McArthur River mine in 2000. This ore often contains elevated levels of calcium (>4% by mass), resulting in less than favourable conditions in parts of the Key Lake mill, yet still contains U3O8 at a concentration of about 0.3%. To recover the U3O8 and reject as much calcium as possible, modifications were made to the grinding circuit in late 2007 to include a gravity concentrator. The concentrator allows this mineralized waste to be processed separate from the regular blend material, rejecting calcium and concentrating U3O8, thus improving the operating conditions in areas such as SX. This will be presented in greater detail along with results and further work.

Magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA's) are a class of materials where magnetic energy can be converted into mechanical energy and vice versa. NiMnGa-based MSMA's have attained magnetic field induced strains up to approximately 10% and have a relatively wide operating temperature range, from well below 0°C to above RT, making them very attractive for a variety of applications. However, these materials also suffer from low toughness. Using these materials in a composite could mitigate this shortcoming, and also overcome limits imposed by inertia and eddy current losses. In this work, we describe the manufacture and characterization of such composites. Composites with 30% by volume MSMA were fabricated under a magnetic field resulting in anisotropic magnetic properties. Damping properties were evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis.

The most widespread methods for producing metallic copper are smelting of copper sulphide concentrates (which generates various types of polluting substances) and the hydrometallurgical route which consists of leaching in sulphate and chloride media (usually employing high temperature, high-pressure and special equipments). This paper presents a process, called VEPE, which consists of oxidizing copper sulphide concentrates in weak alkaline media (Na2C03 orland NaOH solutions), under low pressure and with air sparging. The oxidized concentrate contains less than 0.4% S. Copper is recovered from the oxidized concentrate by the standard leaching-solvent extraction-electrowinning route, with a total efficiency of 98% extraction. The proposed technology could represent a good opportunity to recover copper from sulphide concentrates in a clean, simple and profitable way.

Selection of a suitable site for a metallurgical plant is crucial for the success of the business case. For a brownfield project, with the decision to locate the project on a site with existing production facilities and activities, the selection of the site has been made. For a greenfield project, important economic and logistical considerations include proximity to primary and secondary resources and/or to the market, infrastructure, and access to energy and water. National and regional aspects, including the social license to operate, can be decisive in final site selection. Key to recruiting and retaining a labour force are proximity to urban areas, along with weather and health conditions at the site. Risk factors include site geotechnical parameters and topography, contamination, as well as probability and types of potential natural disasters.

"The Larder Lake-Cadillac Tectonic Zone in Rouyn-Beauchastel area (a 20 km long segment) contains distinct lithotectonic units bounded by artastomosing or sub-parallel shear zones. The gold deposits in the area are located within highly strained portions of E-W striking shear zones. The ore-zones are structurally controlled disseminated and vein-type lodes. They are spatially related either to megascopic z-shaped folds which refold E-W shears, or to areas of intersection between E-W shear zones and late NE-striking faults. Several ore bodies are enclosed within ultramafic rock units or at their contacts with adjacent units. All the lenses are elongated down dip and distributed, both loterally and vertically, ""en echelon"" . The ore zones tend to decrease in size and number away from the hinge zone of the megascopic z-shaped folds.Two main styles of mineralization are recognized at the Astoria deposit and at for most of the deposits in the Rouyn-Beauchastel segments a discontinuous ""Carbonate Ore"" and a more continuous, albitic sulphide-bearing ""Flow Ore"" (terminology used at the Kerr Addison mine).The typical ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are found within strongly arbonatized blocks bounded by conjugate late NE or NNW-striking fralls. The carbonatized blocks display features characteristic of llrittle to brittle-ductile deformation developed in shear zone system. Vein systems in the ""Carbonate Ore"" occur within shear fractures(D R)tension fractures (T), or within brecciated rocks adjacent to NS llrilcing faults. The ""Carbonate Ore"" zones are displaced by numer IU lole E-W, NNE, NW and N-S faults.The ""Flow Ore"" zones are found within predominantly ductile portions of E-W shear zones. The sulphide mineralization is finely disseminated and regularly distributed within mylonitic foliation or associated with veins and veinlets sub-parallel or oblique to the mylonitic foliation, in which case the mineralization is coarser grained. The gold mineralization is a late Archean event postdating the formation of the penetrative fabric, and synchronous with the end of the dextral oblique-slip motion."

"This paper describes the development of a milling circuit for the complex Midwest orebody, containing a high-arsenic uranium ore typical of that found in northern Saskatchewan. The results of preliminary bench-scale test work are summarized. Data from a pilot-plant program carried out at the Ontario Research Foundation are provided for the selected mill flowsheet. Also described are waste circuits which have been established to produce effluents of acceptable quality. Pilot-plant testing of sub-aerial tailings deposition is also described. The applicability of manufacturers' equipment for the various circuits in the flowsheet is discussed.IntroductionThe Midwest uranium deposit is in northern Saskatchewan, 700 km north of Saskatoon, near the eastern edge of the Athabasca BasinDevelopment work on the project is directed by Canada Wide Mines Ltd., a subsidiary of Esso Resources Canada Limited. Participants in the project are Esso Resources Canada Limited, Numac Oil and Gas Ltd., Bow Valley Industries Ltd ., Mink Mining Corporation and Midwest Mining Corporation.The deposit consists of a series of flat lenses of massive ore overlain by a halo of lower-grade sandstone ore. The massive ore is formed of pitchblende and nickel arsenides, along with clay, and averages about 10% U and 9% Ni, The principal minerals are pitchblende (UO2-UO3), coffinite (U(SiO4)1-x(OH)4x), gersdorffite (NiAsS), niccolite (NiAs) and rammelsbergite (NiAs2). The sandstone ore, a friable clay-rich sandstone with sooty pitchblende, averages about 0.4% U and 0.6% Ni. Typical expected mill feed analyses are given in Table I.A bench-scale development program ore was carried out during the period from August 1978 to May 1981 in the laboratories of Lakefield Research of Canada Ltd. (Lakefield), (Lakefield, Ontario), the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute (CSMRI), (Golden, Colorado) and, to a lesser extent, the Ontario Research Foundation (ORF), (Mississauga, Ontario) and the Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Direction of the development studies was shared by Canada Wide Mines Ltd. and its metallurgical consultants, A.H. Ross and Associates. "The Luscar Mine is a metallurgical coal mine located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, 41 km southeast of Hinton, Alberta. The mine is operated by Cardinal River Coals Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture between Luscar Ltd. and Consolidation Coal Company of Canada. The mine produces a high quality medium volatile metallurgical coal which is sold on the export market principally to Japan and South Korea. Operations consist of a surface mine with capacity to produce 3.0 million tonnes per year and an underground mine which is currently mothballed due to market conditions.GeologyBedrock units within the Luscar minesite are of Devonian to Upper Cretaceous age. The commercial coal measures in the area are, however, confined within the Lower Luscar Formation. The Luscar Formation consists of a 460-metre thick sequence of interbedded sandstones, shales and coal seams. The sequence is primarily deltaic in origin, and is bounded to the north and south at the Luscar mine by tectonically induced thrust faulting.The only mineable coal seam at Luscar is referred to locally as the Jewel seam. Average thickness of this coal measure is usually 10.5 m to 14 m, although in some areas folding and faulting has produced ""pods"" of coal from 15 m to over 40 m thick while in others the structural deformation has thinned the coal to 3.0 m to 4.6 m. Waste within the Jewel seam seldom exceeds a metre of shale, carbonaceous shale or infrequent sandstone stringers.Reserves and Coal QualityProven surface mineable reserves, based on pit scheduling through 1996, are 50.8 million raw tonnes. An additional 19.2 million raw tonnes are contained in possible extensions to the present planned operations. These surface mineable reserves are considered to be those reserves within 155 m of the surface. Underground reserves, located within 770 m of the surface show that 25.7 million raw tonnes have been proven to date in additon to 27 .5 million indicated and 260 miIJion inferred.Coal specification at Luscar Mine is as follows:"

"Goldcorp – Eleonore’s 7 000 tonnes per day gold mill was started up in October 2014 and achieved commercial production in April 2015. During the first year, operation has faced challenges from grinding, flotation, sulfide cyanidation and tailing filtration to achieve targeted throughput, availability and recovery.The optimization of non-sulfide tails filter cloth lifetime and filter press availability had the most significant impact on ramp-up of both mill throughput and availability. A change in steel ball addition size to the grinding circuit was made to meet the targeted p80 of 65 µm. Various optimization efforts were conducted on the flotation circuit, intended to recover all sulfide-bearing minerals. The goal is to attain the environmental target of 0.12% sulfur in flotation tails (to eliminate acid mine drainage or AMD), while an average of 0.31% sulfur was obtained over the first months of 2015. Collectors, frothers, activators and hydrodynamic parameters were tested to improve the circuit desulfurization efficiency. High sulfide reactivity in pre-oxidation and cyanidation severely impacted dissolved oxygen levels and cyanide consumption. Studies were undertaken to understand the effects of mineralogy, grind size and leach conditions on gold dissolution kinetics and cyanide consumption. Efforts were focused on pre-oxidation to restore dissolved oxygen levels as well as optimizing both lead nitrate addition and pre-oxidation time.INTRODUCTIONGoldcorp Eleonore’s mill commissioning started in September 2014. It was considered to operate the mill at 3 500 tpd during design, as the mine was planning to operate at this throughput for the first year. However, with the stockpile of ore and a higher throughput from the mine, the mill was able to run at higher tonnage than initially anticipated.While increasing tonnage, a few bottlenecks were discovered and overcome in areas such as filtration and cyanide destruction. There were also recovery issues which were addressed in areas such as grind and sulfide leach. This paper focusses on the first complete year of operation ending September 30th 2015. A process description and the flowsheet are presented below and it will then go into detail about operational, metallurgical, mechanical and design issues experienced during the year."

"We investigated the electrochemical corrosion behavior of commercial permanent magnetic material (NdFeB alloy) in 0.1 M NaH2PO4 solution (pH:4.75) containing 0 – 1000 ppm of chloride at room temperature (298 K). The material was evaluated in magnetized and demagnetized condition with different surface preparations such as: Ni-Cu-Ni coated, uncoated (bare), and anodized (in fluoride containing ethylene glycol at 60 V for 15 minutes to form a thick nanoporous oxide surface). The nickel coated magnetic sample showed reasonable pitting corrosion resistance up to 100 ppm chloride addition. The uncoated samples showed passivity in chloride free phosphate solution. Chloride additions caused pitting and the pitting protection potential was equal to the corrosion potential with 100 ppm chloride addition. Demagnetization did not alter the electrochemical polarization. However, the passive film formed on the magnetic sample showed higher charge carrier density than the film formed on the demagnetized sample. INTRODUCTIONSintered NdFeB permanent magnets exhibit excellent magnetic properties such as large energy product [(BH)max > 450 kJ/m3], high saturation magnetization (1.6 Tesla), and high coercivity (1.2 – 2.08 x 106 A/m) (Sugimoto, 2011). However, the NdFeB magnets are prone to corrosion attack because of the presence of Nd-rich intermetallic phases, such as Nd4Fe (Jurczyk & Jakubowicz, 2000). Nd-rich and B-rich intermetallic phases are distributed in a matrix of Nd2Fe14B tetragonal ferromagnetic compound in a permanent magnet. Generally, several types of Nd-rich phases are present in the magnet with Fe:Nd ratios ranging from 1:1.2 to 1:7. The volume fractions of Nd-rich and B-rich (Nd1+xFe4B4 type) phases are about 10% and 7% respectively (Li, Ma, Li, & Wang, 2011) . Among these intermetallic phases, Nd-rich phase has the most active electrochemical potential. Therefore, dissolution of this phase occurs in preference to other phases by galvanic corrosion when exposed to moisture. Since Nd-rich phases are present at the grain boundaries of the Nd2Fe14B matrix, corrosion leads to disintegration of the magnet."

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. PERUSAL of a list of present-day commercial explosives perhaps does not convey a full realization that there has been a great deal of improvement since the original dynamite was discovered nor that, in recent years, great developments have taken place in specialized explosives. This is true particularly of high-explosives for use in metalliferous mining or what is more commonly termed 'hard-rock' mining. Not many decades ago, only two or three types of explosive were avail-'able for commercial use. One was black blasting powder. Another was ordinary nitro-glycerin dynamite in various strengths. Black blasting powder remains with but very little change. Despite its ancient lineage, it is still with us as perhaps the sole explosive in use today which is almost identical in appearance, physical properties, and working ability or execution co the original. Which dynamite the story is different. Its evolution may be likened to that of the dog, nitro-glycerin as first discovered being the counterpart of the wild dog and, like it, dangerous and hard to control. The original dynamite as made by Nobel might then be considered as representing the first domesticaced species. This original dynamite, however, has been 'crossed with other bloods' until one sees now many distinct 'breeds' in the list. Present-day explosives still have the 'bark' and the 'bite', but with control and research have come many improvements; and types have been created which are specially adapted for particular kinds of work. We still have the direct descendant of Nobel's dynamite in the form of an improved nitro-glycerin dynamite. This C-I-L explosive, Polar Dynamite, is no longer the best type to use in the hunt for gold, silver, iron, and other metals. There have been developed other explosives more suitable for chat work. In Canada, such explosives are accomplishing this work effectively, not only where climatic conditions are moderate but through the rigours of our northern winters, with their sub-zero temperatures.

In September 1945, when the Lynn Lake nickel orebody was discovered Sherritt Gordon Mines was a small copper mining company with rapidly depleting ore reserves at its single producing mine at Sherridon in the Cold Lake area of Manitoba, 100 miles north of The Pas. The company has been formed in 1927, largely through the efforts of Eldon L. Brown, a 27-year old mining engineer, with the financial backing of Thayer and Halstead Lindsley and the Gordon family. The Lindsleys were American mine promoters who had been successful in the Sudbury area, and the Gordons had extensive interests in the lumber industry in northern Ontario. Carl Sherritt, who gave his name to the company, was an American trapper and prospector who had staked the copper property and sold his interest to the new company. Carl Sherritt died in a flying accident at The Pas in 1928. The Sherritt Gordon Mine started production in 1931, shipping copper concentrate to the new Hudson Bay copper smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba. In 1931 the price of copper was 18¢/lb. Within a year the price had fallen to 5¢ /lb and the mine was forced to close. It remained closed through the Depression years.
