"The Copra massive sulphide deposit occurs as a continuous slab of ore dipping at approximately 40 degrees within a sericite schist formation. The orebody has been delineated over a distance of more than 5,000 feet down dip. This paper is mainly concerned with the mining procedure, and particular reference will be made to the use of steel mill holes and hydraulic roof supports. The gravel backfill line, which is operated both by gravity and hydraulically, is described. The paper mentions some of the operational problems, discusses the feasibility of longwall mining and presents the information obtained from stope testing."

"This paper defines the responsibilities and functions of the Maintenance Department, and its organization, physical and human assets, highlighting the unique operating problems. Due to the self-sufficient aspect of the Asbestos Hill Deception Bay project, the Maintenance Department cover-s fields that are numerous and very dissimilar: production, mobile, processing, service, power generation, fire protection, heating, water and sewage disposal equipment. Added to this, buildings, plant and camps, wharves and communications equipment all demand versatility, adaptability and expertise from maintenance personnel. Good maintenance practices are a necessity in this environment and are more critical than at southern locations; that is, high-quality replacement material, complete and well-controlled preventive maintenance, major repairs on a component-replacement basis, updated inventory, efficient training and permanent contacts with suppliers, combined with an equipment improvement program, updated specifications on lubricants, hoses, seals, filters, etc., are mandatory. The seasonal aspect of the operations applies a great deal of pressure on the maintenance team, as the production months do not permit major repairs. Short- and medium range planning and accurate evaluation of equipment conditions highly influence production efficiency. Maintenance control, planning and scheduling do not follow the accepted standard routines, as personnel turnover normally does not permit an accumulation of knowledge of the equipment history and condition by the •individual tradesman."

"Nearly 90 per cent of the iron ore produced in Canada is derived from iron-formation or bedded iron deposits. About 70 per cent of this consists of concentrates obtained from iron-formation; another 20 per cent was formed by natural enrichment processes.Four principal varieties of iron-formation are recognized -the Algoma, Superior, Clinton and Minette types. Differences in their geology, mineralogy, chemical com-position and environment of deposition are of special significance in their evaluation as ore.The properties of the ores, including grade, beneficiation qualities and minor element content in taconites, metataconites and naturally enriched ores, reflect characteristics of the primary stratigraphie units from which they are derived. A detailed description of the stratigraphie facies is essential for efficient utilization of these source beds."

"Introduction0N MAY 2th, 1953, Socony Seaboard Pembina No. 1 well, located 70 miles west-southwest of Edmonton, was completed as a producer of high-gravity oil from the Cretaceous Cardinm sand. This event is possibly the most significant in the development of the oil industry in Western Canada since the Devonian discovery at Leduc in 1947. The result of the Pembina discovery and the follow-up drilling has been a tremendous increase in interest in the Cardium formation.Descriptions of the Cardium formation, as it occurs in the 'Central Foothills' and in the 'Southern British Columbia Foothills' have been presented by R. E. Folinsbee (9)-and C. R. Stelck (21), respectively. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the more regional aspects of the subject.The name Cardium was first used .as a stratigraphic term in 1863. Dr. James Hector ( l2), geologist attached to Captain John Palliser's exploratory expedition, gave the name 'Cardium to the whole section of marine Cretaceous beds exposed along the Bow river west of Calgary."

Gas and oil seeps have been known in Quebec for more than one hundred years. These occur in three main areas which contain sedimentary rocks with a total thickness estimated to vary from 6,000 to 20,000 feet. The strata in these areas are similar in many respects to those in producing areas of southwestern Ontario and the Appalachian basin, and the prospects for finding and developing commercial reserves of oil and gas in Quebec would therefore also appear to be favourable. Little of the exploratory drilling to date has been con-ducted in a systematic manner, and most of the drilling has utilized improper or inadequate equipment. Many wells have also failed to adequately test and fully evaluate the principal zones of interest. Relatively high drilling costs have hindered systematic exploration; however, with improved portable equipment, it is expected that future wells can be drilled with greater efficiency and at less cost. Most of the mineral rights in Quebec are held by the Provincial Government, and acreage can still be leased in large blocks on favourable terms.

In the Yellowknife geologic province, 2,600-million-year-old granites are cut by three sets of diabase or gabbro dyke : (1) large dykes striking 70°E to E-W, (2) rare dykes striking N-S to 30°E and (3) an abundant swarm striking N 10°-300W. Preliminary potassium-argon dating has been carried out on whole-rock samples of the chilled margins and coarse centers of the dykes, and on mineral separates from the dykes and contact aureoles. Data from seventeen dated samples suggest that the dyke sets were intruded during three periods of basaltic magmatism -2,200, 1,500 and 1000 million years ago. The two earlier periods closely follow the time of emplacement of granites in the Yellowknife and Churchill geologic provinces. The latest diabase dykes occurring in the Yellowknife province are temporally related to a widespread basaltic magmatism, for which the term Keweenawan is not appropriate. This article is directed co a commentary on the patent system in its relation to the public interest. As man gained supremacy over his environment, he could devote progressively increasing portions o his time to improving his standards of living. In the history of the human race, we have advanced from the hollowed floating log to the modern steamship of the present age; from the sickle and flail to the reaper and combine; from the trumpet and drum as a means of communication co the telegraph, telephone, and radio; from the horse and ox cart to the automobile, truck, aeroplane, and train; and so on ad infinitum through the list of inventions on which are based the industrial and political economies and standards of living we enjoy today. It has also been a long road from the day of the alchemist and his closely guarded secrets to the era of the patent system and its storehouses of knowledge open to the world. The alchemist and the craft and merchant guilds closely guarded their secrets. In fact, they largely opposed innovations on the grounds that they might injure profits and restrict employment. In these days of unrest, with great clamour out of doors for radical changes in our political and industrial economies, it may not be untimely to examine one of the keystones which support the economic structure we know as the free enterprise system, the system which is predicated upon the right of the individual to own property. Many, through impractical idealism, ignorance, confused thinking, or blind political prejudice, advocate the substitution of ownership by the State ? for the right of ownership by the individual. As civilization has advanced to the high standards of living we enjoy today through the efforts of a comparatively few inventors, the patent system which has provided the incentive that created the inventions on which our industries and our employment are based is fully understood and appreciated by a comparatively small percentage of our people. As a result, the patent system, as a keystone in our free enterprise economy, is an apt target for destructive criticism, with the thought, possibly, that by eliminating or drastically restricting the several rights to individual ownership one by one, ownership by the State will progressively replace ownership by the individual.

This paper deals with the exploration, development and current operations of the salt mine at Goderich, Ontario operated by the Sifto Salt Division of Domtar Chemical Limited. The rock salt is obtained from a bed 1,760 feet below the surface, 75 feet thick, extending under Lake Huron. Annual production is in excess of one million tons. Large mobile equipment is used. Details of this equipment, as well as the shaft layout, which permits the equipment to be lowered underground with a minimum of trouble are outlined. Mining, crushing and screening procedures' are rev1ewed. Reference is also made to productivity salt distribution and uses.

"Gibraltar Mines is located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, 230 air miles north of Vancouver, B.C. and 38 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. There are four mineable zones within the copper-molybdenite deposit: Gibraltar East, Gibraltar West, Pollyanna and Granite Lake. Open-pit reserves are 358 million tons which average 0.37% Cu and 0.016% MoS2 at a 0.25% Cu cut-off. The Granite Mountain pluton is one of the several Jurassic-Cretaceous intrusions which outcrop along the east side of the Fraser River fault system between Williams Lake and Prince George, B.C. The original Granite Mountain quartz diorite has been metamorphosed by a cataclastic deformation which foliated the rock on a regional scale. Attendant to the development of the foliation, the rock was saussuritized such that the present mineralogy is compatible with that of the greenschist facies. The presence of garnet-bearing assemblages is explained by a restricted increase in water pressure. Pre-mineral intrusive phases within the saussuritized quartz diorite are: (1) leucocratic quartz diorite, (2) aplite and (3) quartz-feldspar porphyry. A late chloritized hornblende dacite dyke is post-mineral. Quartz-feldspar porphyry and leucocratic quartz diorite are locally present on the inner sides of the Gibraltar East, Pollyanna and Granite Lake pits. Their presence suggests a core around which occurs an elliptically shaped sulphide-bearing stockwork. The stockwork, which comprises four ages of vein development, is imposed on and partly controlled by the regional foliation of the samssuritized quartz diorite."

Tailing Dams Three types of dam have been structed to impound tailings from the Allenby mill: 1.- By classifier unit 2.- By earth dam 3.- By direct deposition of tailings The first type, which includes two dams, was built across a shallow valley which sloped down to Similkameen river, just below the mill site. Two earth embankments, one below the other, were built across the valley. Tailings were then piped to Akins classifiers mounted on wooden wheels. The classifiers were set up at one side of the valley and gradually moved ahead on the sand embankment created by the sand discharge from these classifiers, the slime overflow going to settli.ng ponds formed by the dams. Decanting wells were built in the settling ponds by placing four six-by-six timbers vertically in the ground, two feet apart, to which two-by-six tongue-and-groove boards were nailed. The elevations of the ponds were raised, as required, by nailing additional two-by-six boards on the well and bolting on more six-by-six timbers when required. The bottoms of the wells were attached to a covered launder made of three-inch lumber laid on a one per cent grade. This launder carried the overflow through the dam. The second type of dam was built across a long, narrow valley, known as Hitchen's Flat, the upper ~n d of which was about 2½ miles north of the mill. This valley, an ideal tailings site, was 4,000 feet long and from 600 to 800 feet wide. An earth embankment with a concrete spillway through the top was built approximately 28 feet high across the lower end of this valley. Tailings were then dumped into the upper end of valley, with no further expense until the basin was filled up to the level of the flume where this entered the valley. When the upper end of the valley was filled to this point there was still room for more tailings at the lower end. Therefore, a pump was installed to elevate the tailings to build a wall around the upper end of the valley by depositing sands from a launder built up on 20 foot supports and sloping both ways from the pumping station around the upper end of the basin.

"IntroductionSNOW LAKE is situated in northern Manitoba at latitude 54° 55 and longitude 100°, 400 miles northwesterly of Winnipeg, 80 miles northeast of The Pas, 80 miles east of Flin Flon. A 38-mile road from Wekusko, on the Hudson's Bay railway, serves the community.The mine is located in and close to the southern edge of the Precambrian Shield in typical low-relief muskeg and lake country.The Howe Sound Exploration Company, Limited optioned the property from Nor Acme Gold Mines, Limited, after preliminary diamond drilling had outlined two orebodies of low-grade arsenical gold ore.Following the examination and study of geological data and of 50,000 feet of diamond-drill core, and metallurgical tests made during 1942 to 1945, a decision was made to develop the mine and build a 2 ,000-ton mill concurrently. This development has been described by G. C. Lipsey in a paper entitled The Development of a Mining Operation from Diamond-Drill Data which was published in the August. 1952, issue of Mining Engineering.Geological Features of the OrebodiesThe orebodies at Snow Lake occur in volcanic rocks of acid to basic composition and, to a lesser extent, in intrusive hornblendite. The hornblendite is a massive, uniform, .coarse-textured rock except in the immediate vicinity of the ore zone, where it becomes sheared and carbonatized. The acid volcanics have been converted to quartz-garnet-biotite gneiss, and the basic volcanics to amphibolite gneiss. Orebodies have been formed by the replacement of all three rock types."

ONE of the reasons advanced for the decline in prospecting and discovery is that, as regards surficial examination, the law of diminishing returns is becoming applicable. Fewer surficially unprospected fields remain; therefore, fewer discoveries by such means result. Much in the nature of mineral resources remains to be unearthed, but even now, and more so in the future, will discovery depend on painstaking petrographic and structural mapping, aided, where necessary, by judicious applications of all the complementary scientific knowledge and devices (e.g., thin section microscopy, geophysics, and drilling) that experience proves effective in localizing a mineral deposit even beneath drift, lake, or muskeg. It is to be expected, then, that the rate of discovery will decrease, that the cost per discovery will greatly increase, and that the work of discovery will become more and more the careful, methodical assembling of field data, conscientiously interpreted on the basis of scientific knowledge by trained, experienced operatives. In view of these trends, the status of applied geophysics to Canadian mining exploration and development work might well be reviewed. The niche which geophysics may occupy relative to geological surveying and drilling has been clarified by the last twenty years' experience. The cloud of somewhat justifiable scepticism that followed the 'geophysical promotion' period of the late 1920's has lifted. Mining, exploration, and finance companies, in open-minded fashion, are seeking sound advice as to what are the scope and limitations of the geophysical methods at present practised. The purpose of this paper and the following one is, therefore, as far as lies within the author's power, to review briefly the geophysical methods at present in practice in Canada, and, at greater length, to joint out impartially and critically their scope, merits, shortcomings, an possible future development. The treatment will be non-technical, the hope being that an accurate statement of the present status of geophysics in Canada may do much to result in a sounder, saner growth of what, in the future, shall undoubted} y prove an increasingly useful tool in exploration and development work. ?

A transparent replica of a casting die was built to achieve a better understanding of the filling mechanisms of aluminum in high pressure die casting. Water and tomato paste were respectively used as analogues for the Newtonian liquid aluminum and the non-Newtonian semi-solid aluminum. The transparent die was installed on an industrial casting press and filling was filmed with a high-speed camera. Differences between the Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are presented and discussed.

THE Wright-Hargreaves mine is one of a group of seven mines long active in the Kirkland Lake district, Ontario. Detailed geological reports and maps covering the area have been published by the Ontario Department of Mines (1,3)t. Though all these mines work several productive veins there is one vein which is common to all and is known as the North Vein of the camp?not that it is the most northerly vein mined, but it is the more northerly of the two major veins of the camp. At the Wright-Hargreaves mine there are in all ten important producing veins, and most of them have a N.60°-65°E. strike and in general a steep southerly dip. It is a common belief that most of these veins lie along faults but it will be shown that whilst this is true of some of them it is not true of all, and also that a vein may lie in a fault along part of its course and elsewhere fill a fracture in line with the fault, this being a consequence of rotational movements that took place during faulting. The paper describes the history of faulting at this mine in particular, makes observations on the principal pre-ore fault, and describes the method used in solving the movements on the post-ore faults. Other details of geology are not discussed except to mention here that our main veins lie almost entirely in the syenite porphyry stock except on lower levels close to the east boundary of the property, where the North vein leaves the porphyry to enter the greywacke.

"The Powell mine is in western Quebec about 2 miles northwest of the adjoining towns of Noranda and Rouyn. It is the original discovery of the area, its gold-bearing quartz vein having been discovered in 1922. Considerable work was done on this vein by several companies and discontinued because the grade, when gold was $20 an ounce, was too low for profitable extraction. Between 1922 and 1924 an inclined shaft was sunk to 225 feet and drifts were driven 240 feet on the 100-foot level.In 1929, due to the discovery and development of the Horne mine at Noranda, interest was revived in the property. Sulphide deposits of the disseminated and vein types were explored on the Powell claims. On the B copper 'showing', a vertical shaft, now known as the 'old copper shaft', was sunk to ·a depth of 167 feet and 300 feet of lateral work was carried out on the 150-foot level. As no orebody was discovered this work was discontinued.In 1933 the present company, Powell Rouyn Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and the gold-bearing quartz veins were again tested by drilling and trenching. In 1936, the price of gold having risen to $35 an ounce, operations were resumed. Since then the inclined shaft (No. 1) has been deepened to 500 feet, a second shaft (No. 2, vertical) on the main quartz vein has been sunk to 2,630 feet, and ll; shallow vertical shaft (No. 3) on the same vein but in the south claim has been sunk to 500 feet.Lateral work now approximates 9 miles, and to November 15th, 1946, 1,685,674 tons of ore, which averaged 0.129 oz. gold per ton and 73.6 per cent. Si02, had been extracted."

DURING the past 5 years a large amount of money and effort has been expended in exploration of iron-formations and in testing their suitability for beneficiation. Beds of ferruginous material are numerous and widely distributed in the Precambrian rocks of Canada and practically all of the known iron ranges or belts have been examined to a limited degree at least in an effort to evaluate their potential as sources of iron ore. A number of favorable beds have been selected for mining on completion of surface sampling, diamond drilling, extensive metallurgical testing and economic studies, and many other ranges are being studied. There are still a great many iron-formations that have not been evaluated by modern concentration methods and their regional extent is not fully known. The iron-formations are easily located by airborne or ground magnetic surveys but the main task in finding a mineable ore-body of this type amounts to locating a bed sufficiently large for mining which consists of material that can be concentrated economically by modern beneficiating methods. "The paper refers to methods and concepts used in the computer treatment of banks of geophysical, geochemical and geological data, relating to the exploration of massive sulphides. In particular, a data bank of 400 drill holes on independent conductors can be used to calculate probability levels of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides according to the characteristics of the conductor. Inversely one can, using the data bank and some cost assumptions, simulate and optimize the cost of intersecting a certain quantity of sulphides by selecting drill targets among conductors according to conductivity, magnetism or gravity. Problems of noise, inherent in any simulation, are illustrated in this paper by the results of a study of the nomenclature of volcanic rocks of 27 drill holes by forty geologists. Compilations of data banks are long and timeconsuming, and it would help to standardize to allow exchange of data. We believe that such efforts may result in the discovery of more mineral deposits and at a lower cost. The present study is supported jointly by SOQUEM The New Jersey Zinc Co. and Cominco Ltd."

"A pyroxenite-carbonatite complex containing extensive pyrochlore mineralization was discovered during January, 1966, within an exploratory license area held by Consolidated Morrison Explorations Limited. Located 32 miles south of Moosonee, Ontario, the deposit was found under 100 feet of glacial till and Paleozoic sedimentary cover using airborne and ground magnetometer surveys. Exploratory and detailed drilling, totalling 47,625 feet in 85 holes, was completed in outlining the deposit to a maximum depth of 900 feet. Pyrochlore reserves are estimated at 62,000,000 tons averaging 0.52 per cent Cb,05 to a depth of 825 feet. Included in this tonnage is a high-grade section containing 10,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.82 per cent Cb20 5• The deposit is still open at depth and the intrusive complex has by no means been fully explored.The columbium (niobium) mineralization occurs in a lineated calcite-dolomite host rock which has been intruded along a fault zone within a northeast-trending granulite belt. Potassium-argon dating indicates an age of 1655 million years.Preliminary studies suggest that the complex was intruded in a series of pulses in the form of a partially crystallized mush. The James Bay intrusive is unusual in that it is linear in form and contains only two main rock types - p•yroxenite and carbonatite. Nepheline-bearing syenites and associated rocks are notably absent. Moreover, the pyrochlore is essentially non-radioactive and free from many of the impurities generally associated with other pyrochlores. A test shaft to investigate soil conditions and to provide a 250-ton bulk sample was completed during 1968. Subsequent pilot-plant operations indicate that good quality pyrochlore concelttrates can be produced from this deposit."

The four basic types of electric motors -squirrel-cage, wound rotor, synchronous and D.C. -are de-scribed, with particular reference to speed-torque characteristics. The three classifications of squirrel-cage motors, C.E.M.A. B, C and D, are compared, and methods of selection for specific drives are outlined. Wound rotor and synchronous motors are covered from the viewpoint of construction details, methods of operation and control required. The application of these motors to crushers, conveyors and ball mills is described and reasons for their selection are given. The application of D.C. motors to haulage equipment and mine hoist drives is included, and the basic principles of a variable voltage drive are illustrated. Efforts have been made through-out to provide specific examples of motor selection, with particular reference to the mining industry. THIS paper will attempt to answer the question -"which motor should be used for a specific drive?" Although it is impossible to cover the complete subject of electric motor application here, we hope to give some idea of the types of motors available and why certain types are used on specific applications.

Based on a statistical analysis of the categorical and numerical data from the established geological model, a geochemical classification of mineralization has been shown to be objective in nature and correlated to the envisioned metal extraction process. Multivariate chemical classification has the potential to discriminate within a combined response from different types of alteration and metal abundances. Distinct domains of chemical response determined by clustering analysis were used as a validating criterion for a geologically driven metallurgical testing program. The groups established are spatially linked to the geological process responsible for their genesis, providing clarity in geometallurgical and resource modeling.
