ABSTRACT: Data were produced from two uranium project studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. In both studies, excellent metallurgical results were produced. The loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled through RIP circuits in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low. Metallurgical results from these two campaigns are presented, along with a case study economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative processes of counter-current-decantation or filtration and solvent extraction.

"During the last decade, mining companies have been overwhelmed by technological solutions to perceived problems. This is particularly true with information technology where rapid advances have resulted in a professional climate characterized by technomania — the perception that failure to adopt emerging technologies will result in a loss of competitive advantage. This paper describes the applicability of structured analysis and design techniques as an appropriate methodology for integrating emerging technologies in the mining industry. The potential of this approach to improve overall mine effectiveness through improved communication and co-ordination between operations and maintenance is discussed. IntroductionA strong working relationship between the operations and maintenance departments in both open pit and underground mines is fundamental to the overall success of the mining endeavour. Unfortunately, for many mines, this characterization is far from accurate. Short-range production targets dominate the day-to-day management of the mines. This can be seen in Bostwick and Buchanan’s (1993) report on American Barrick Resources efforts to achieve an aggressive 415 000 tpd mining program at their Goldstrike operation in Nevada. When production managers do not meet their quotas, the finger is often pointed at maintenance. As a result, a confrontational culture can develop between the two organizations, resulting in a lack of cooperation that exacerbates the problem. Historically, production planning has taken priority over maintenance planning. This is reasonable since production is the primary purpose of the mine with maintenance serving in a support role. This basic relationship remains intact today. However, the trends toward mechanization, increasing levels of automation, and larger equipment, have resulted in increased reliance on the equipment used in the mine. As a result, downtime costs now go well beyond the direct labour associated with the repair of the machine. Lost production costs due to downtime resulting from failed equipment are becoming an increasingly important factor in determining a mine’s overall economic performance."

The Polar Continental Shelf Project was initiated in 1959 to provide an administrative and logistic vehicle for research in the physical sciences of the land, sea and channel area of the Arctic Archipelago. Most of the scientists are supplied on secondment from the professional branches of the Department. The yearly expeditions number some eighty scientists and sub-professional staff, and they are supported by a fleet of fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters. Accurate positioning is obtained by the use of a Decca Lambda navigational system which is moved as the area of interest is shifted. The Project is designed to accommodate not only physical scientists, but to provide facilities for other scientist who may have an interest in the area under study. The main research scope of the Project includes topographical surveys, hydrography, oceanography, geology, including marine sedimentary studies, gravity, magnetics, seismology, glaciology and geography. The Polar Continental Shelf Project was initiated and recommended by the Committee on Northern Development in 1958.

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. The Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland consists of a Precambrian core of gneisses and granitic rocks, cut by numerous diabase dykes. This complex is surrounded by an envelope of sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to Carboniferous age. Radiometric dates from two granite masses in the core give a mini-mum age of -945 m.y. (Grenville) for the last major tectonic activity. This Grenville deformation conferred upon the core substantially its present structure which has controlled later events to a marked degree. Block movements of the core, dominantly in a vertical sense, have ex-posed it to erosion at intervals. The nature and distribution of the flanking sedimentary rocks and the present relief of the peninsula suggest four such movements. THE Great Northern Peninsula extends some 150 miles north-northeast from the northwest corner of the main body of the island of Newfoundland. It separates the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the Atlantic Ocean, except for the 12 mile wide

"The United States contains a variety of domestic rare earth element mineral sources containing such as ancylite, bastnasite, monazite, and xenotime. Research has been performed to investigate the fundamental surface chemistry involved in the froth flotation of these minerals, and apply the knowledge gained to substantiate the results through experimental testwork on a domestically sourced rare earth ore. This paper will outline the fundamentals and literature of rare earth mineral flotation, review its industrial applications and provide some recent research updates.THE RARE EARTH ELEMENTSRare earth elements (REE’s) are a unique family of elements with nearly identical physical and chemical properties. They account for approximately 1/6th of all naturally occurring elements, but the entire group occupies only one position on the periodic table. These 15 elements make up the lanthanide series (atomic numbers 57–71), and all but one (promethium) occur naturally. In addition to these 15 elements, yttrium and scandium are also considered rare earths since they tend to occur in the same deposits as the rare earths and share similar physical and chemical properties as seen in Figure 1. In particular Figure 2 denotes, a cartoon of the subtle differences in each caused by the 4f atomic sub shell (Gschneidner Jr., 1964). These subtle differences result in very difficult challenges in the selective concentration and final separation of each rare earth. (Anderson, 2015, Kronholm, Anderson, Taylor, 2013)Rare earths are separated into two different subsections; the “lights” or LREE’s (lanthanum57 through europium63) and the “heavies” or HREE’s (gadolinium64 through lutetium71). Yttrium is generally considered a heavy rare earth since its ionic radius is close to that of the HREE’s, while scandium is not considered either a light or a heavy."

Introduction This paper will describe the mining plant and underground operations at Quemont. Details of geology and milling are beyond its scope. Papers on these subjects will be prepared and presented separately. A detailed account of the exploration and development, 1944 to 1947, has been given by W. L. Brown (1). Location The mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are in Rouyn township, Rouyn-Noranda county, northwestern Quebec. These concessions total about 640 acres in area. They lie within the limits of the City of Noranda, contiguous to, and directly north of, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines, Limited. A large area in the southern part of the property is covered by the north arm of Osisko lake. Production The present operating rate is about 2,100 tons per day. Three flotation concentrates are produced: copper, containing a large proportion of the gold and silver in the ore; zinc; and pyrite, which carries an appreciable additional proportion of gold. The copper and zinc concentrates are shipped to smelters as produced. The pyrite concentrate is cyanided to recover additional gold, after which it is filtered, dried, and shipped for the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The principal revenue metals are copper, gold, and zinc. Silver and pyrite are important by-products.

The following paper deals with some of the aspects of the law as it relates to the oil and gas industry in the Province of Alberta, but it should be stated here that consideration of this large subject will be confined to discussion of only those laws, rules, and regulations which affect actual exploratory operations. The paper will not touch on those branches of the law which deal with such matters as income tax, customs, and other kind red subjects which are of a highly technical nature and which are more properly the field of the specialist. Generally speaking, any system of law consists of certain major components. There must be, firstly, a national authority capable of ensuring the existence of the state itself and of maintaining the stability and continuity of its institutions; secondly, a philosophy of government covering the relationship of the state to the individual and of the individuals to one another; thirdly, a body of law to effect the purposes of the philosophical principles; and, fourthly, a judiciary to arbitrate any disputes that may arise from such relationships. All of these components and the system itself are, of course, subject to a varying degree of modification with the changing times and with the influence upon them of other systems of law. Now. while it is true to say that all systems of law comprise these similar basic features, it is apparent that the end result of any two systems of law in their impact upon the individual may be quite different.

Introduction Although gold production in British Columbia began in 1859, lode gold was not produced till 1893. Since 1900, the annual production of lode gold has fluctuated between $3,000,000 and $6,000,000. About twenty per cent of this production may be regarded as by-product gold from base metal mining. The remainder comes from a few isolated but important mines, such as the Rossland mines, Nickel Plate, Surf Inlet, Premier, Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo Gold Quartz, and from several less important mines. All of the above, except Pioneer, Bralorne, Reno, and Cariboo, are approaching or have reached the point of exhaustion, but all are now receiving, under the stimulus of the. present gold-mining boom, drastic resuscitative treatment, with, in some cases, signs of resurrection. Notwithstanding this, however, the main interest at the present time is focussed on the Bridge River and Cariboo fields. Both these fields were discovered in the early 'sixties' and, apart from the Cariboo placer production, both have from time to time contributed small amounts of lode gold; but it is only during the last two years that the real possibilities of these areas were discovered. and that they began to assume the appearance of goldfields of major importance. The two fields are sorme three hundred miles distant from one another and contain deposits of distinctly different types, so that the only reason for including them in one article is the fact that they came into prominence more or less simultaneously and at a time coinciding with, but not otherwise related to, the present gold-mining boom.

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. "This study is part of large and an ongoing investigation into the development of a light-weight and highly fluid mine fill for various applications in mining and civil operations. Foam mine fill is the new material proposed for backfilling mines, and is fabricated by mixing stable foam into a mixture of tailings, binders, and water. This paper investigates the effects of both binder dosage and the amount of foam used upon the mechanical and physical properties of foam fill, mainly in regards to compressive strength, porosity and density.Samples were prepared using tailings from a copper mine as the inert material, Normal Portland Cement as the main binding agent, and a foaming agent with a foam generator. Samples were cured for 7, 14 and 28 days and were then subjected to unconfined compressive strength (UCS) testing. Select samples were subjected to mercury intrusion porosimetry, so as to study the microstructural properties. An empirical model was then developed, using a response surface methodology to establish a relationship between the investigated parameters. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDThe disposal of mine tailings is a significant issue in the mining industry, particularly as mine production increases. Many mines re-use mine tailings for backfilling, which is a method for reducing environmental exposure to tailings, maintaining underground stability, and increasing ore recovery (Benzaazoua, Belem & Bussière, 2002).This paper introduces a new type of backfill called ‘foam mine fill’. This proposed backfill material is similar to cellular concrete, as air bubbles are entrained in cement or lime mortar, resulting in a cellular structure (Narayanan & Ramamurthy, 2000). Air voids can occupy up to 70% of the volume of concrete, which makes it light- weight, and thus can be used for a wide range of civil applications, including backfilling (Tarasov et al. 2010; Panesar, 2013). Unlike cellular concrete, the incorporation of air bubbles into a mixture of tailings, binder and water makes foam fill a potential new backfilling material. Furthermore, a preliminary investigation on foam fill samples found that pulp densities should be optimized before adding the foam, in order to produce consistent samples without foam segregation or losses (Hefni et al., 2014)."

"During the summer of 1968, the author was employed in the Research Department of Dominion Foundries and Steel, Limited, Hamilton, Ontario. Over the years, Dofasco has been conducting a program for developing more efficient control of its basic oxygen steelmaking process. The author was thus able to obtain a variety of viewpoints from both research engineers and furnace operators. He also had access to extensive literature dealing with BOF control schemes underway at other major steel producers. This paper describes the present state of developments in BOF steelmaking control.The necessity for efficient BOF control is pointed out. To appreciate the variables to be controlled, a brief outline of process fundamentals is included. Technical aspects of present methods of practical control are examined in detail; the relative merits of dynamic over static control models are emphasized. Finally, it is shown how an effective dymic-optimizing control scheme serves as the basis for closed-loop computer control of the process."

An equilibrium calculational computer program (STABCAL) can be used for titration simulation. The program can handle various forms of titrants: solid, aqueous, gaseous or another solution, and various type of reactions: reductive, oxidative and adsorption. Background chemistry, mathematical considerations, and program development will be illustrated. Also, simple titration applications such as how to determine the acidity of aqueous solutions and alkaline sulfide leaching of gold are presented. Processing of an acid mine water from the Berkeley Pit in Butte, Montana has been used for illustration purposes. The treatment studies included: cementation, sulfidization, and neutralization. The sub-level blasthole benching method of mining has been proved to be economical at Willroy Mines. How-ever due to the nature and attitude of the wall rock, this method is susceptible to serious hanging-wall dilution of the ore. Attempts to solve the dilution problem by various means were not satisfactory until long Stressteel bars were employed as rock bolts. The adoption of this de-vice does not require any special skill, and has become routine in the under-ground operation. Since the inception of this method, the dilution of the ore has been greatly reduced and the ov1!r-all costs of controlling this dilution are much lower. INTRODUCTION T HIS is a report describing the successful use of long Stressteel bars as rock bolts in preventing l1anging-wall failure and consequent dilution in open stopes. Willroy Mines Limited is located (Figure 1) near the town of Manitouwadge, Ontario, approximately l1alf-way between Sault Ste. Marie and Port Arthur.

THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

"THE MOST common type of mine hoist is, as is very well known, that in which the a.c. wound rotor motor is the driving medium. The reasons for the use of the wound rotor motor are, of course, economic. This type of equipment has, during the years, proved to be very reliable and reasonably satisfactory. It is, in fact, still being installed and in some places where a very hard and exacting duty cycle is demanded. As an example, a 600 h.p. 2,300-volt job was recently installed at the Caledonia mine (1) at Glace Bay. This is a vertical. hoist in a shaft only 175 feet deep but it is, nevertheless, working hard bringing coal to the surface and in making a trip at a speed somewhat better than every 20 seconds.The control equipment for such installations usually consists of a pair of primary reversing contactors which are interlocked both mechanically and electrically, together with some form of secondary controller. This, in the case of small hoists, can be a drum controller and metallic resistors or, in the case of larger hoists, a magnetic contactor panel and metallic resistors or, alternatively, can be one of the various forms of liquid rheostats which are available. The liquid rheostats, if of the dipper type, may be manually operated or it may be operated by some form of servo motor mechanism. In the weir type of liquid controller, the electrolite is, of course, pumped in and out of the rheostat."

The development of specific risk-based methodologies to guide and prioritize clearing decisions in countries contaminated by Unexploded Ordnance and Land Mines (generically defined as Explosive Remnants of War: ERW) either at country-wide scale or road-network-scale was used in an unexpected way when a large mining company asked Riskope (www.riskope.com) to develop a multi-modal transportation network risk assessment plan, which included ocean going vessels, ports, wharves, railroad, trucking and other modes of transportation. What had been a first-in-the-world attempt in the humanitarian landmine clearing industry turned out to be extremely useful and equally innovative in the extractive corporate world. Instead of a country contaminated by man-made hazards such as Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) we were now dealing with a very complex multi-modal transportation system afflicted by all sorts of potential hazards from quakes to climate change, sabotage to labour strikes, and vulnerable infrastructures to potential energy crises. Interestingly enough the method developed to deal with ERW risk based clearing was also capable of solving the transportation risk evaluation problem, after necessary customization. This paper shows how ?out of the box? thinking and industry cross dissemination can bring significant evolution and a competitive edge even to unexpected areas of the world-wide mining industry. The results of the logistic system risk assessment shed new light on the management of the system, changed the way insurance coverage was purchased, and led to significant potential cost reductions in a period of global recession.
