"Abstract - The development of robust 3-D geological models involves the integration of large amounts of public geological data, as well as additional accessible proprietary lithological, structural, geochemical, geophysical, and diamond drill hole data. 3-D models and maps have been available, particularly in the petroleum industry, for more than 10 years. Here, we demonstrate how robust 3-D maps can be used as interactive tools for mineral deposits exploration. In particular, we show how the interrogation of 3-D data sets can constrain exploration targets at depth. The main advantages of this technique for the mining industry are the homogeneity of data treatment and the validation of geological interpretations, taking into account geophysical and geochemical data. Data integration and cross-correlation of geology and geophysics can be achieved in two dimensions in any good GIS package. However, the added strength of 3-D analysis is the integration of separate data sets in three dimensions to build more complete, more realistic models, and in delineating areas of high economic potential at depth. Furthermore, these models can be modified and improved at any time by adding new data from ongoing drilling and geoscientific surveys. This paper presents two examples of 3-D models used for mineral exploration: the Joutel VMS mining camp and the Duparquet gold camp, Quebec. In both examples, the creation of the model is discussed and queries specific to the relevant exploration model are introduced. Eight potential exploration targets are generated at Joutel and seven at Duparquet. Although the targets defined are dependent on the details of the chosen queries, it is apparent that this technique has the potential to generate promising exploration activity that can engender new targets. Sommaire - Le développement de modèles 3-D géo-intégrés fiables implique l’intégration de grandes quantités de données géologiques publiques ainsi que des données lithologiques, structurales, géochimiques, géophysiques et de forages en provenance du secteur privé. L’industrie pétrolière dispose de modèles et de cartes 3-D depuis plus de 10 ans. Ce manuscrit présente un exemple d’utilisation de modèles et de cartes tridimensionnels détaillés comme outils interactifs dans l’exploration de dépôts métallifères. L’emphase est mise sur le processus d’interrogation des données en 3-D pour la définition de cibles d’exploration en profondeur. Les avantages principaux de cette technique sont l’uniformité du traitement des données et de la validation des interprétations géologiques, tout en tenant compte des données géophysiques et géochimiques. L’intégration de données et la corrélation de la géologie et de la géophysique peuvent être accomplies en deux dimensions dans n’importe quel logiciel SIG. La plus grande force de l’analyse 3-D demeure cependant la possibilité de construire des modèles complets et réalistes permettant de cibler des secteurs à haut potentiel économique en profondeur. De plus, ces modèles peuvent être modifiés et améliorés de manière interactive en ajoutant de nouvelles données provenant de forages et de levés géoscientifiques en cours. Ce manuscrit présente deux exemples de modèle 3-D géo-intégrés développés pour l’exploration minérale : le camp de SMV de Joutel et le camp aurifère de Duparquet, Québec. Dans les deux cas, la construction du modèle est décrite et les requêtes spécifiques à chaque type de gisement sont présentées. L’exercice a permis de définir huit cibles d’exploration potentielles à Joutel et sept à Duparquet. "Construction, equipping and planned operation of a new laboratory for engineering-teaching and research in coal and mineral processing is described. This facility will provide approximately 1860 m2 (20,000 ft. 2 ) of laboratory space with nearly half devoted to a new venture in coal preparation. Two high-bay, overhead crane-accessed areas will accommodate major unit operations for each of the ""coal"" and ""mineral"" laboratories. COAL PREPARATION FACILITIES:The coal facility provides three main functional areas:(1) Sample preparation (drying, blending, crushing, screening) and sink-float washability testing.(2) Unit operations U1igh-bay, serviced by crane).(3) Analytical laboratories.(l) Sample Preparation and Sink-Float TestingBreaking or comminution of coal will be accomplished using a rolls crusher, a hammer mill, a jaw crusher, or a pulverizer. Capacity to prepare coal at rates of up to approximately 4 tph will be provided by some of these units. Large diameter (~0.5m) baths of heavy organic liquids will be available for sink-float washability tests on coal samples of several kg. Particle sizes of up to 25 mm can be tested in these baths. Smaller scale washability tests on finer samples will be accelerated by centrifuges."

In Alberta, Canada, heavy industrial projects are constructed using a prefabrication approach: spools and pipes are produced in the factory, and are assembled into modules that are transported to the industrial plants for installation by mobile cranes. Planning the onsite mobile crane operations is critical to the project budget and schedule. However, due to the large magnitude of industrial projects, manual heavy lift planning is tedious, and the results are not particularly responsive to site changes. This paper introduces an integrated mobile crane management system developed by PCL Industrial Management Inc., in collaboration with the University of Alberta, which investigates crane location selection and path checking for field module assembly. The project information is stored in a database, and the proposed system retrieves data, performs the calculations, and records the results back to the database; the calculations involve automatically selecting locations for the mobile crane, considering the crane capacity, lifting range and utilization. Lift paths for modules are checked for feasibility based on selected locations, satisfying the site and crane configuration constraints, and crane walking paths are planned if needed. The designed system is tested in an industrial project to validate the effectiveness of the system.

"The technical report form provides the headings to be used and content required when a completing a technical report to be filed in accordance with NI 43-101. The technical report is meant to be a summary of the scientific and technical information on the mineral property. The Instrument (NI 43-101) requires that technical reports be filed with Canadian provincial or territorial securities regulators to support certain disclosure of mineral exploration, development and production activities and results in order to permit the public and analysts to have access to information that will assist them in making investment decisions and recommendations. FORM 43-101F1 TECHNICAL REPORT INSTRUCTIONS (1) The objective of the technical report is to provide a summary of scientific and technical information concerning mineral exploration, development and production activities on a mineral property that is material to an issuer.This Form sets out specific requirements for the preparation and contents of a technical report. "Numerous processes co-exist for metal extraction and for metal removal from effluents of mining operations. Each process enjoys an economic advantage, including environmental cost and benefit, if utilized in a specific situation. This applies equally to biohydrometallurgical processes. This paper will analyze four types of biohydrometallurgical processes for their economic and environmental attributes: biooxidation of refractory gold, extraction of copper from sulfide, metal removal from effluents by active sulfate reduction, and metal removal by the use of wetlands. By examining the economic and environmental advantages of these processes, generalizations can formalized and it becomes possible to define niches of application where biohydrometallurgy can be considered. Our analysis shows that biohydrometallurgy can be efficient at small scale, be more environmentally friendly than conventional technologies and is relatively easier to operate. The higher financial risk associated with unproven technologies at the commercial scale is being eliminated as biotechnology-based plants are put into production.IntroductionBiotechnology can be described as the rational exploitation of the activities of living cells or parts thereof, requiring an integrated multidisciplinary approach between biological and technical disciplines. Microbiology, biochemistry, botany, molecular biology, chemistry and engineering all contribute to practical applications in the extraction, manufacturing and service industries, and in environmental management. Considerable commercial success of biotechnology has been achieved in several sectors, including health care, agriculture, forestry and aquaculture.Over the past 40 years, industry, research organizations, government laboratories, and universities in a large number of countries have participated in investigating the utilization of biotechnology applications in mining. Today, several technologies are used commercially in well understood and engineered systems which can be grouped under the term biohydrometallurgy. Many more technologies have been demonstrated at laboratory or pilot plant scale. Although initial developments and commercial applications were aimed at metal extraction, the dramatic increase in environmental awareness, the practice of sound environmental management demanded by more stringent regulations over the past decade, and the need for low cost treatment in perpetuity, has led to serious investigation of biotechnology for environmental control. In addition, increasing power costs, lowering of ore grades, and decreasing commodity price in real dollar terms require the use of highly efficient and competitive extractive technologies."

The beginning of the electroforming technology dates itself on the beginning of the industrial revolution 1800 to 1820 approximately. Basis was the existence of electricity in order to be able to drive the electro-form-process. With the development of the electroforming, big names of the science-history, like Michael Faraday (1791? 1867), Sir Humphry Davy (1778?1829), Max Schlöter (1878?1946), Werner von Siemens (1816?1892), and many others. Already about 1840, the first monograph originated to electroforming (38). While in the first years the electro-forming most extensive only to the coating of art - or other usefulness-objects was used. At the beginning of the 20th century the formation of objects from pure metals became more and more, later also from alloys to application. One of the first bigger electroforming factory, the ?Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik? was working 1894 in Geislingen / Steige, Germany. In the industrial application, the electroforming-technology is to be imagined away for miscellaneous coatingtasks and the form-body-preparation no longer today (18). A little bit confusing is the german name ?galvano-technology?. It based on the Italian physiologist and naturalist Luigi Galvani (1737 ? 1798). This technically seen is however wrong, right, the name is electroforming. The physical bases were founded mainly by Michael Faraday and Sir Humphry Davy.

"A t last the legal red tape which has tied up flow-through share financing has been cut. New rules effective for deals signed after 1986 simplify flow-through financing by removing the necessity f or cumbersome agency relationships. But there is no free lunch-the new rules require increased government reporting. And beware federal tax reform promises to have a good look at the new flow-through share rules. IntroductionFlow-through shares have always worked better in theory then reality as an effective financing tool. The concept is straightforward: a transfer of risks, tax deductions, and potential returns. But the mechanics of the old flow-through rules made the transfer of risk impractical to impossible by placing the responsibility for incurring Canadian exploration expense (CEE) on investors. The new rules are significantly more realistic, shifting that responsibility to the issuing corporation. However, every silver lining must have a few clouds around it. In the case of the new flow-through rules, the more obvious negatives are increased reporting requirements and reductions in CEE eligible for flow-through by amounts of assistance received. The new rules are effective for deals signed after 1986, however, so a few old-style deals are still around. Practical Difficulties with Old RulesThe old rules which applied to investments in flow-through shares were structured so as to make it the responsibility of the investor, rather than the issuing corporation, to perform the Canadian exploration expense for flow-through. Since most investors had neither the expertise nor the inclination to incur the CEE, this requirement necessitated the use of cumbersome arrangements whereby the investors would appoint an agent (usually the issuing corporation) to incur CEE on their behalf. Although the issuing corporation might consequently be the party which actually spends the flow-through share funds on CEE, the awkward legal structure of such an arrangement made the investor the ""principal"" incurring the CEE. As such, the requirements of the old rules were met and the investors could receive their flow-through share s."

"Mine-shaft wire-rope discard regulations include, among other criteria, a limited amount of permissible loss-of-breaking-strength (LBS). Currently, this parameter is estimated on the basis of non-destrutive-testing (NDT) with electro-magnetic (EM) type instruments. This paper analyses the accuracy with which these estimates have, so far, been obtained in practice.It concludes that while certain types of testers have produced better results than others, the desired accuracy level has not been attained. "Flow of traffic in the underground mine has been improved through the years with clever use of traffic lights. The evolution is characterized by three major design changes. This paper will scan the basic criteria of these designs.IntroductionMines Gaspe, formerly known as Gaspe Copper Mines Limited, is a member of the Noranda Group of companies. The mine is the ""raison d'etre"" of the town of Murdochville, located 600 m above sea level on the Gaspe Peninsula. Paved highways link the town with Gaspe, 95 km to the east, and with Anse Pleureuse, 400 km to the north, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence.The low-grade copper mineralization was discovered in 1921 at Copper Mountain by local prospectors, the Miller brothers. Noranda Mines Limited obtained an interest in the property in 1937. World War II interrupted exploration work and it was not until 195I that a decision was made to bring the property into production.Initially, operations were confined to the Needle Mountain underground deposits which commenced production in 1955. Between 1968 and 1982, low-grade ore from the Mountain open pit supplemented the production. Due to the depressed market, surface and underground operations were suspended in 1982. Needle Mountain underground mining resumed in the second half of 1984, but the Copper Mountain open-pit operation remained idle. Since 1979, more than 75 km of exploration drilling resulted in the discovery of two new deposits, one which is located under the town of Murdochville . Mines Gaspe's present ore reserve, approximating 8 million tonnes, will be depleted by the end of 1992."

"The Trout Lake stockwork molybdenum deposit is located in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, 50 km southeast of Revelstoke. The property is being explored by a joint venture between Newmont Exploration of Canada and Esso Minerals Canada.The deposit is associated with a small granodiorite stock of Upper Cretaceous age (76 Ma) which has variably altered the surrounding schists, argillites and marbles of the lower Paleozoic Lardeau Group to hornjelsic biotite schists and skarn. The intrusive is composed of a small stock and an intersecting network of northeast- and northwest-trending dykes at surface that coalesce downward into a larger stock. There are two main phases of intrusion, with an earlier quartz porphyritic granodiorite cut by an intra-mineral ""quartz diorite"" porphyry. A strong sub-vertical north-trending fault controls the distribution of the mineralized stock work and displays post-mineral movement.Molybdenite, accompanied by pyrite and pyrrhotite, is mainly present along the margins of veins in a well-developed quartz stock work, but occasionally is strongly disseminated in microfractured intrusives. The stock work is strongest in and around the contacts of the intrusive and its apophyses, and occurs over a vertical range of more than 1,000 m. As defined by the 0.10% MoS] contour, the main mineralized zone is up to 300 m long by 200m wide. Preliminary drill-indicated reserves, currently being revised, are approximately 50 million tonnes of 0.23% MoS2, within which are several zones of higher-grade material. Hydrothermal alteration, as defined by quantitative X-ray diffraction studies on composite core sections, is composed of a central quartz/K-feldspar/albite/minor biotite zone coincident with molybdenum mineralization, which is overlapped by a slightly later, antipathetic quartz/ sericite/pyrite zone. Ankeritic carbonate is also a common alteration mineral, but only traces of fluorite, and no topaz or sulfosalts, have been observed. Analysis for trace elements such as Sn, W, Bi, Sb, As, Hg, U, Ag, Au, Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn and F has been limited except for Sn and W, which appear to be zoned inside and outside the Mo zone respectively; the other elements do not show detectable patterns thus far."

A semi-automatic device has been constructed that can be used to check the solution strength of cyanide solutions. It consists of a wheel on which a gold-foil-bearing glass slide is mounted. The wheel moves the gold foil through the solution under test and intercepts a light beam. As the gold foil is attacked by the cyanide solution its light absorption diminishes. The successive in-crease in transmitted light intensity is recorded and gives a measure of the gold dissolution rate. Curves have been obtained to show the effect of cyanide concentration and oxygen content on dissolution rates. Ion exchange technologies and processes are proven and established technologies widely used in numerous industries including hydrometallurgy for metal separation and recovery from metal bearing solutions. They have evolved through innovation which includes the development of countercurrent multistage (or multivessel) ion-exchange contactor systems with the benefit, for industrial operations, of greatly reduced footprints and ion-exchange media inventories, as compared to more traditional fixed bed contactor systems. Information on procedures for design and sizing of countercurrent multistage ion-exchange contactor systems is not readily available since it is most often proprietary know-how. The purpose of the present work is to develop a simple and innovative approach for the sizing and modeling of industrial countercurrent multistage ion-exchange contactor systems. The suggested approach builds upon published results and upon the following observation: in an industrial setting, knowledge of how component concentration or load on a contactor output streams vary with time t within a cycle duration (0 < t < T) is generally of little interest, only knowledge of time average of such concentration or load over a cycle duration T is sought for. The presented approach will be tested against current or past performances of industrial countercurrent multistage contactors of Orano Mining operations such as SNK‑3M moving packed bed contactors in Kazakhstan and NIMCIX fluidized bed contactors in Namibia.

It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type ""go or no go"" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes.Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine extension project, an oil sands mine project and a polymetallic open pit project.Once a favourable recommendation has been obtained then a detailed ""cash flow after taxes"" analysis can be carried out for the project.IntroductionMany tools are used in financial decision-making such as the payback period, the discounted cash flow, the internal rate of return and the wealth growth rate (Berry , 1971).These tools are useful and meaningful in evaluating normal projects closely related to regular business where the number of assumptions made is usually very small and where the cost of capita! is usually selected as a discount rate or a hurdle value. In situations where a significant number of assumptions have to be made,two problems can emerge, namely:I. the risk involved is underestimated leading to a potential financial disaster; or2. a good opportunity is lost because the approach used in evaluating the project is too conservative.Each assumption has its own degree of uncertainty and it is well known that combining uncertainties together can lead to a total uncertainty of critical proportion. The easiest way to account for risk is to increase the discount rate or the hurdle value, but this approach alone is quite subjective and can easily lead to the problems described above."

"Selective mining, such as post pillar cut and fill, is used in large, flat, irregularly shaped ore bodies where ground stability is to be maintained. This selective mining is used to open the stope to the full lateral extent of the ore body in order to minimize the dilution and maximise the recovery. For increased mining depth, design of the post pillar becomes more challenging since those pillars will eventually fail as mining progresses upwards. The post pillar should be designed such that failure does not occur at the early mining stage, such as at the first cut. After mining progresses upwards, the post pillars are expected to fail but be confined by backfill. In order to maximise ore recovery, both drift width and post pillar size must be designed adequately with a consideration of all geomechanic parameters. This paper will describe the process used to design post-pillar cut and fill for one of the ore bodies in Vale’s Copper Cliff Mine using a combination of both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques. By utilizing both empirical deterministic and numerical modelling techniques drift width and post pillar size can be effectively designed. Current post pillar cut and fill design in the existing Vale operations are used to validate the design for Copper Cliff Mine. INTRODUCTIONCopper Cliff Mine is located within the Copper Cliff Offset in the limits of City of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, as shown in Figure 1. The Copper Cliff Offset extends about eight kilometres south from the Sudbury Igneous Complex into the footwall rocks. Until 2008, the current Copper Cliff Mine was operated as two separate mines i.e. North Mine and South Mine. However, as part of restructuring of Vale Ontario Operations, the North and South Mines were merged in 2009 to form the “Copper Cliff Mine”."

"INTRODUCTIONThis article documents the current non-metallic mineral s resources of Manitoba (Fig. I), and makes comparisons with currently producing deposits in North America and elsewhere in the world. Industrial minerals may lack the glamour of gold, silver or the base metals, but they contributed approximately 20070 to the value of Manitoba&apos;s raw materials, and even out-performed our petroleum industry, except during the oil boom of the early eighties (Fig. 2). Values per tonne of industrial commodities can be as high or higher than for base metal ores. Commodity prices (Canadian), listed in the February 1988 issue of Industrial Minerals magazine, are: talc $202.00 - $306.00, sillimanite $427.00; kaolin $69.00 - $270.00; garnet $175.00 - $250.00; and mica $405.00 - $540.00. The prices are converted to Canadian dollars using the prevailing exchange rates of February I, 1988. Some commodities are not sold by weight. Building stone, for example, is sold by the cubic foot. An average rough granite block, 4 ft by 4 ft by 8 ft, is worth approximately $2000 sitting on the quarry 1100r in southeastern Manitoba (Fig. 3).Thus, not all rocks that do not contain sulphides are worthless. Some may be extracted more profitably than either the base or precious-metal bearing varieties.Industrial Mineral CommoditiesThe commodities available in Manitoba are described in two categories: (1) those already in production that have additional development or expansion potential, and (2) those not in production logical information available at this time.Current Industrial Mineral ProductionThe commodities described herein are currently in commercial production in Manitoba (Fig. 4). SOFCs with thin electrolyte of two types: SDC (15um) single-layer and YSZ (5um) + SDC (15um) bi-layer were fabricated by screen printing and co-firing on Ni¬YSZ cermet substrates. Using in-situ sintered Sm0.5Sr0.5CoO3 cathode the SDC-cell shows high performance at low temperature, 1180mW/cm2 peak power density around 650°C, while the YSZ+SDC bi-layer cell generates about 340mW/cm2 at 650°C, and good performance at 700-800°C with almost theoretical OCV value. Many Zr-content micro-islands were found on the SDC electrolyte surface. The influence of co-firing temperature and thin film preparation methods on the Zr-islands&apos; appearance was investigated.

"Cigar Lake Mining Corporation is presently operating an underground test mine in northern Saskatchewan, with a view to developing a high grade uranium deposit. The mining test is intended to demonstrate that the innovative mining methods designed are safe and economical. Two vertical mining methods are considered for the test:• box hole boring from the lower level;• blind boring from the upper level.In both cases, it is anticipated to freeze the ground before excavation to ensure hole stability and limit the inflow of water. Special care will be taken to minimize radiation exposure of personnel.Remote controlled equipment will be used where applicable.The access to the orebody was an important component of the test. After shaft sinking to a depth of 500 m, development work commenced at the 420 level in fractured sandstone which was grouted to restrict the inflow of formation water. The drifting continued in a section of poorly consolidated sand, clay and sandstone; this area was frozen to allow stabilization prior to excavation. At the 480 level relatively little water was encountered in the altered basement gneiss and grouting was not necessary; however, extensive ground support was required in the soft ground areas."
