The factors affecting the precipitation of arsenic-free alunite (KAl3(SO4)2(OH)6) were investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. Although the amount of alunite precipitated increased with increasing retention time, temperature, solution pH and the concentrations of Al(SO4)1.5 or K2SO4, the composition of the products remained nearly constant. The preferred conditions identified for the precipitation of arsenic-free alunite were then used to assess the behaviour As(III) and As(V) during alunite precipitation at 98°C. Increasing additions of As(III), as NaAsO2 or As2O3, resulted in a slight increase in the amount of precipitate formed at pH 2.80. However, X-ray diffraction analysis showed all the precipitates to be alunite, and <0.2% As(III) was detected in the products. In contrast, increasing additions of As(V), as KH2AsO4 or As2O5, resulted in significant increases in the amount of precipitate formed at pH 2.80 or 3.00. Furthermore, the arsenate (AsO43-) contents of the precipitates increased up to 15%, and the sulphate contents decreased, as the As(V) concentration of the synthesis solution increased from 0 to 9 g/L. X-ray diffraction analysis of the products detected only alunite, but there was a progressive expansion of the alunite cell with increasing arsenate content. The implication is that arsenate substitutes for sulphate in the alunite structure. Preliminary observations on the environmental stability of the arsenate-bearing alunite using the TCLP protocol gave solubilities <0.4 mg/L from a precipitate containing 8.5% AsO4 and 7.8 mg/L from a product containing 19.5% AsO4. Thus, it appears that alunites containing less than -10% AsO4 would be an acceptable vehicle for the disposal of arsenic from hydrometallurgical processing solutions.

The topic of this article is the automation and robotization in refurbishment processes of industrial buildings. The need to mold these production spaces is quite universal. Particularly in the regions with a high industrial development and with a lack of buildable land, there is a need to convert this kind of spaces into an improved production system. The latest developments can be a useful tool for achieving a more efficient way of reforming this type of construction. On the one hand we have the digital or computerized 3D Laser Scanning (Computer Aided Measurement) that allows an accurate 3D modeling of the entire building. On the other hand, the project management using BIM (Building Information Modeling) could provide an easy design of each of the elements of the refurbishment. Finally, through the production of construction elements using robotics as jig or for CNC (Computer Numerical Control) we achieve a neat production of each element. How can be all those technologies applied in the refurbishment or expansion of industrial buildings? The research takes a first approach and analyzes industrial buildings that can be called generic or not specialized. To narrow the field of refurbishment, three major factors are defined. The first is to minimize the bill of the energy consumption of the buildings. This could be done either insulating the envelope, reducing the waste-volume to be conditioned climatically or creating facilities for energy production. The second is that the refurbishment or expansion of industrial buildings should try not to interfere on the production process that takes place in the building. In other words, the assembly of the elements in the construction site should be quick and easy, causing the least of disturbance at the workplace. Finally, the research makes an approach towards a robot integrated industrial or productive building .

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a powerful tool for analysing the flow of charge, the energy consumption and the pattern of energy utilisation of a SAG mill. With the development of laser scanning measurement, the detailed internal working surfaces of a SAG mill can now be included in DEM models. Using scanned results for new and worn shell liners for a 32? (9.75 m) SAG mill, it is shown that the feed and discharge lifters have significant effect on the flow of the charge introducing significant threedimensionality. The effects of the resolution accuracy of liner geometry and the lower cut-off of the rock size distribution are explored. Finally, using a matched new and end of life worn liner and operating conditions taken from site surveys, the effect of wear on charge motion, distribution and energy utilisation are evaluated.

The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd. , is a $2.3 billion copper/zinc project, located in the Ancash Department in Perú. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70,000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 Km. long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23-year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world. This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28th, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14th, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo. The construction stage of the project generated 8,000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10,000 employees, and 30,000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals; around 30% of whom came from the department of Ancash where the deposit is located. Approximately 5,800 indirect jobs will be generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina will increase the Peruvian mining exports by 30% and Peruvian GDP by 1.4% within its first year of full operation in 2002. Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented a successful approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company?s environmental program. Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues, and as a result, has set new standards in Perú for environmental and community management, and sustainable development.

Heat treated seamless tubular products are processed in a fashion that can be easily modified to produce dual phase microstructures, through the implementation of intercritical soaking prior to quenching. Dual phase steels are known to possess low yield strength compared to tensile strength. The steel line pipe market is interested in low yield-tensile ratio materials for application in reel barge pipe laying operations. In the current work compositions of commercially produced material already in use for the line pipe market were examined and dual phase microstructures were successfully developed. The microstructure and properties of the materials were found to be stable over the range of intercritical temperatures employed. Tempering temperature and, somewhat unexpectedly, small chemistry differences were found to have the largest influence on properties. Excellent toughness performance was observed in samples tempered at temperatures in excess of 550°C. Tempering in this temperature regime produced materials with strength suitable for application as API X60 line pipe. A difference in tensile strength between steels of similar chemistry was observed, and is not fully understood at this time. Welding performance was considered through simulation of three regions of the heat-affected zone. Neither intercritical temperature, nor tempering temperature, were found to have a significant influence on the heat-affected zone properties. The peak temperature achieved in the thermal cycle was the only significant factor. The hardness of the heat-affected zone was found to increase continuously with increasing peak temperature. While toughness was found to be low for both partially-transformed and coarse-grain heat-affected zones, the toughness of the fine-grained heat-affected zone was substantially better. Based on the results found in this laboratory study, a limited production trial is expected.

Microwaves have considerable potential as an energy source in both mineral processing and metals extraction. In this research, the utilization of microwave radiation for the heating of a gibbsite type bauxite ore was investigated. Firstly, thermogravimetric studies were performed in order to characterize the dewatering processes of the ore. Secondly, both the real and the imaginary permittivities, which are the fundamental properties that determine the interaction of microwaves with any given material, were measured for the bauxite ore as a function of temperature. The changes in the permittivities were shown to be related to the dewatering processes. Subsequently, the effects of operating variables such as processing time, sample mass, particle size, microwave power, sample bulk density and carbon and magnetite additions on the sample temperature in a microwave field were studied. The results showed that under suitable conditions the bauxite ore could be readily heated. Therefore, there is considerable potential for the application of microwaves for the heating of bauxite ores.

"The formation of ultrafine ferrite by strain induced transformation is assessed using rolling and hot torsion experiments. These experiments are used to examine the impact of thermomechanical processing conditions and steel chemistry on strain induced austenite to ferrite transformation and the formation of ultrafine ferrite. The critical strain for dynamic strain induced transformation increased with increasing carbon equivalence, deformation temperature and austenite grain size. The deformation structure in the austenite grains changes with the thermomechanical processing conditions.Drawing on these results and the current literature, the important factors for the production of ultrafine ferrite are described and a mechanism proposed."

PREFACE THE successful conclusion of all geophysical work depends on the operator&apos;s skill and sound judgment, as well as on his knowledge of geology and geophysics. We have been fortunate enough to have as co-workers a number of very good men. Some results of their work are summarized in this paper, and it is a pleasure to acknowledge their cheerful spirit of co-operation and the enthusiasm and loyalty with which they have assisted in the building of a geophysical organization to serve the Canadian mining industry HISTORY Geophysical prospecting is commonly, but quite erroneously, regarded as something new. The name is modern, but the principle of applying physical laws to reveal the presence of hidden ore is several hundred years old. Already, at the beginning of our civilization, the need was strongly felt for methods that could indicate the presence of ore in regions where the ore-bodies were completely masked or hidden from the eye. Particularly in countries where the rocks have been eroded during periods of glaciation and later covered by a thick mantle of glacial debris, all kinds of mysterious schemes were invented to locate the hidden ore. Often magic was resorted to (for example, the divining rod), but methods based on sound principles were also developed. Such features as topography, colour and taste of surface waters, and the growth and occurrence of trees and plants, were used to reveal certain types of ore deposits. For finding bodies of iron ore, the compass was very early in use. The fact that objects of iron attract a compass needle was utilized in prospecting long bef01:e the time of Columbus, and a systematic search for bodies of iron ore by this method was organized as early as the year 1600. There are still in existence documents, dated a little over 300 years ago, which show that the Swedish Chancellor of that day, Axel Oxenstiorna, ordered dozens of sun-dial compasses from instrument makers in Germany. The Swedish Government at that time employed a great number of prospectors to search systematically for iron ore. This Government undertaking must have been quite successful, as a number of iron ore-bodies were found in areas covered by heavy overburden. These prospectors were simply Government &apos;geo-physicists&apos;, although they were not known by this fancy name.

The flotation has been and is still the most widely used mineral concentration method. Because of its complexity, the flotation process required the development of robust control strategies which was facilitated by the introduction of on-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on stream analyzer (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters. The interest in developing control strategies has persisted because the benefits to be gained in terms of improved metallurgical performance are substantial. As the flotation control becomes more and more difficult due to the emergence of low grade and complex ore cases, other control strategies have to be introduced. Froth based control is one of the emerging useful control strategy This paper will focus on the state of the art in the on-line froth characterization as obtained by numerical image analysis. The technology of machine vision provides a novel solution to several of the problems encountered in conventional flotation systems for monitoring and control, and constitutes a powerful tool for the investigation and interpretation of the effect of various flotation parameters as driven for the froth phases. "The technology known as Expert Systems is being used within the minerals industry in a wide variety of problem areas. Applications include diagnosis, prediction, training, monitoring and control. Expert Systems provide a way to program computers to imitate human thinking. The construction of such systems is a straight-forward task that can be quickly learned by novices but can require a lifetime to master.To assist in the understanding and utility of this technology, a special manual bas been prepared which operates on a microcomputer under the MS-Windows environment. The manual covers all aspects of Artificial Intelligence of relevance to Expert Systems. A hypertext system allows users to probe as d•~ply as needed to achieve understanding or to simply skim the surface of the knowledge to obtain a quick overview of subjects. The manual was developed under the sponsorship of the Mineral Sciences Laboratory of CANMET and is available from the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. Annual updates are planned to keep abreast of new developments in this rapidly changing technology. The Star-Waddy Lakes area lies withjn the northeasterly-trending early- to mjd-Proterozoic volcanoseilimentary-pl utoruc belt referred to as the La Range Domllin. In the area investigated the domajn is composed of the Central Metavolcaruc Belt which is bordered by metasedimentary belts of the Crew Lake and MacLean Lake Belts to the northwest and southeast respectively. The boundaries between the Central Metavolcanic Belt and the flanking belts are generally marked by prominent zones of shearing. The volcanosed imentary succession is intruded by a variety of ultramafic to felsic plutons which, on the basis of lithology, field relations and geochronology, can be broadly subdivided into three groups or episodes. These are: a) an 'early' (ea. 1866 Ma), possibly subvolcanic, episode marked by composite intrusions ranging from gabbro-diorite to granite, b) an 'intermediate' (ea. 1854 Ma) plutonic event distinguished by more homogeneous felsic intru ions ; and c) a 'later' (ea. 1835 Ma) event characterized by leucocratic quartz-rich grani te intrusions. The La Range Domain has undergone polyphase deformation with a strongly developed northeast-trending structural grain. Large scale folding is manjfested by large regional sy nforms, arcuate and triangular patterns associated with many of the plutons and by tight to isoclinal folds within the adjacent metasedimentary belts. Inhomogeneous strain characterizes much of the Star-Waddy Lakes area. With strain gradients being typically very steep, zones of high strain consisting of zones of extreme extensional fabrics, discrete shearing, as well as broader zones of cataclasis and structural slicing, are often juxtaposed with areas of relatively minimal deformation . Dilation structures tend to favour these zones of highly contrasting strain. Late, brittle fractures, faults and shear zones are widespread and appear to be particularly important as loci for gold mineralization. Metan1orphic mineral assemblages indicate that upper greenschist to middle amphibolite facies conditions were attained. Geological and geochenucal evidence indicates that the Central Metavolcanic Belt evolved in an island arc environment. Metavolcanic rocks from both the Waddy and Star Lakes areas display similar characteristics on variation diagrams (e.g. AFM and the Jensen cation plot) in that the dominant trend is calc-alkaline with some basic to intermediate types having a mildly tholeiitic character. A few samples from the southern end of Lower Waddy lake display komatiitic to basaltic-komatiitic afl'injties. The relatively immobile minor and trace elements (e.g. Ti , Zr, Nb, Y, Cr) provide reliable characterization of the metavolcanics, particularly of the basalts, which have highly distinctive trace element properties. Geochemical patterns for the basalts are similar to those for modem volcanic arc basalts. Low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7017 - 0.7019) are consistent with a subduction-related origin for the volcanics. The major plutons have chemical properties typical of volcanic arc granites and are largely calc-alkaline in character, showing little chemical variation from the volcanics.

IN 1902, a famous Canadian geologist made the following statement : ?&apos;From what we know row of the iron-ore fields of the Province, we may feel that Ontario is assured of a great future as an iron-ore producing country. Judging from the extent of the territory over which the newly discovered ranges have been found, Ontario should in the not far distant future take her place as one of the chief iron producers in the world". In 1905, an official of the Department of Mines said: "In ten years Canada will have b:ecome a great metallurgical country. You will see an iron industry in this Dominion larger than in any country in the world. Canada will yet furnish the world with its iron supply. It will be the same with iron as with wheat. A decade from now Canada will outstrip all other countries in wheat growing. The production of iron at a cheaper rate than it can be made elsewhere will cause Canada to take a similar position as far as iron is concerned". In 1924, a former President of the Institute, in arguing his claim for inconceivable mineral wealth in this country, stated as a "certainty" that iron-ore deposits on the scale of the ones in Minnesota would be found "again and again" in the Canadian Precambrian. In 1930, a Minister of Mines announced that "The country surrounding Churchill holds large deposits of valuable iron and coal", and he stated that, at that place, &apos;We will have an industry in iron that will compare with Pittsburgh". These statements are definite promises, just as definite and important as the statement "I promise to pay" on a note, and they are not fulfilled by casually stating, as is the habit, that someday we will work our low-grade iron ores. Nor are they fulfilled by stating, as is often done, "Oh, So-and-So did not mean that &apos; . Due to their importance and to the prominent positions held by the men who made these statements, they were widely circulated throughout Canada. They were taken at their face value, and on the strength of them and many more of the same kind in regard to our other resources we have planned and built, at huge expense, provinces, governments, civil services, railways, and other equipment. The reserves that were to justify these expenditures have not appeared. There has not been a ton of iron ore mined in Canada for many years, and important commercial reserves are unknown. We have built the mill, but adequate ore is lacking.

"This paper describes the sinking of a circular concrete ventilation shaft through 110feet of water-bearing overburden. The brine circulation freezing method was used to stabilize the walls during excavation. In order to take advantage of the cold winter weather, a custom-built heat exchanger (natural radiator) was installed in place of the standard mechanical refrigeration plant.IntroductionIn the late fall of 1979, Les Mines Selbaie awarded a contract to the firm of 1.S. Redpath Limited to sink a ventilation shaft on its property in northwestern Quebec. The shaft was to be sunk through 110 feet of water-bearing overburden and approximately 90 feet of rock to a final depth of 200 feet below surface. The water table was measured at 16 feet below the surface elevation.After examining the soils report and diamond drill core from the shaft area, Redpath came to the conclusion that freezing was the best way to stabilize the overburden for sinking. LocationThe mine site is 420 statute miles due north of Toronto, just east of the Ontario/Quebec border (Fig. 1). Access to the site is provided by a development road built by the Quebec government from the Matagami/lames Bay Highway. History of Ground Freezing In the Mining IndustryIn 1862, shortly after the development of mechanical refrigeration, a mine shaft was sunk through an artificially frozen water-bearing formation in the United Kingdom. The first application of ground freezing in North America was for a Michigan iron ore shaft in 1888. Since that time, the freezing method has been used to sink hundreds of shafts throughout the world. Its best known application was to sink sixteen shafts through the Blairmore Formation in Saskatchewan.The same method has been used in every case. It involves chilling a calcium chloride brine solution and circulating the brine in concentric pipes, spaced between 3 and 6 feet around the shaft perimeter and usually 4 to 5 feet from the limits of the proposed shaft excavation."

"RESUMELe gisement Silidor représente la dernière découverte effectuée dans le camp minier de Rouyn-noranda (fin 1985). Située à 5 km à I' ouest-nord-ouest de Rouyn-Noranda, ce gisement aurifère doit être mis en exploitation au cours du mois d’avril 1990. 11 est constitué par plusieurs facies minéralises comprenant une tonalité, un dyke mafique, une brèche carbonatée et par une veine de quartz. L’or se présente en particules très fines associées ou non à la pyrite. La zone d’altération hematitisee se développe sur une largeur de 30m environ de chaque cote de la veine. Une première étude structurale montre que la minéralisation s’est mise en place le long d’une zone de tension, orientée NNW, résultant de I' interaction de deux zones de cisaillement dextre orientées N270° et N300°. Les réserves diluées sont évaluées jusqu’ à 700 m de profondeur, à 4,78 Mt à 5,4 g/t Au. ABSTRACTThe Silidor ore deposit, located 5km WNW of Rouyn-Noranda, is the latest discovery made in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp. Discovered at the end of 1985, this gold deposit will begin production in the spring of 1990. The deposit comprises several facies including a tonalite, a mafic dyke, a carbonated breccia and quartz vein. Gold is present as very fine grains, associated or not with pyrite. A 30m wide hematized alteration zone is developed on both sides of the structure. A structural analysis shows that the mineralization took place along a NNW oriented tension zone that resulted from the interaction of two dextral shear zones, oriented N270 and N300 respectively. The diluted ore reserves are estimated at4,78 Mt at 5,4 g/t down to a depth of 700m."

Twin Mining made a conscious decision when it changed from gold mine explorer and developer to become a diamond explorer in Canada?s Arctic. It was a decision of survival in an environment that saw junior gold companies either disappear or turn into dot com companies. Twin Mining learned fast and staked within weeks of that decision the first 50 sq. km of claims on, what became, its TORNGAT property at 59½° latitude on the east coast of the Ungava Bay in northern Quebec. This land position, 724 diamonds later (including 322 macro diamonds of gem quality, white and transparent) grew to 507 sq. km today. The 74° latitude called when Twin Mining exercised the option to acquire 3 claims owned by Helix Resources Inc. which revealed exceptional diamond potential. A gem quality 5.4 mm (0.768 carat white and transparent) diamond and the discovery of 16 pipes on 15.2 ha convinced Twin Mining?s board to sanction the deal. Both properties have outstanding features. Kimberlite Dykes and Pipes are in outcrop. The property locations have deep-sea access near existing infrastructure. Their locations are in an environment that is stable and development friendly and has a positive track record with successfully operating mines near-by.

Heat recovery from blast furnace slags is often contradicted by another requirement, to generate amorphous slag for its use in cement production. As both the rate and extent of heat recovery and slag structure are determined by its cooling rate, a relation between the crystallization kinetics and the cooling conditions is highly desired. In this study, slags with different basicities were studied during non-isothermal cooling. Their continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram were plotted and compared with each other. Then, a mathematical model was developed that predicts the amount of crystallization during cooling. The results were validated by experiments performed by Single Hot Thermocouple Technique and image analysis. A second mathematical model that calculates temperature history of slag during its cooling was coupled with the above model, to allow optimizing the slag/air ratio for both heat recovery and slag glass content.

"How can the durability of asphalt pavement be doubled without increasing highway budgets? Asphalt containing asbestos can provide the desired performance with additional costs being made up by longer life. The addition of a low percentage of asbestos to an asphalt mix permits a higher asphalt content without any consequent loss in stability. It is mainly the higher asphalt content that provides improved performance and durability, although the fibrous reinforcement plays a key role in preventing the propagation of micro-fissures. Reducing agents can be applied to leach metal values from natural and secondary resources such as laterite ores and deep sea manganese nodules and recycled materials such as spent batteries / catalysts which contain high-valent metal oxides of manganese, cobalt and iron. Selective leaching of some metals can be achieved by selecting conditions to control the saturated solubility and dissolution rates of metals from oxides or mixed metal/oxide matrices. The leaching results are rationalized on the basis of chemical species, Eh-pH diagrams and heterogeneous kinetic models. The role of reducing agents such as hydrogen peroxide, sulfur dioxide and iron(II) sulphate, in acid, alkali and in the presence of complexing ligands such as ammonia for the improvement of the leaching of metal oxides and metals is discussed. Previous studies on acid leaching of metals from nickel laterites, manganese nodules and spent catalysts/batteries in the absence or presence of reducing agents show that the rate controlling step involves the diffusion of protons through a thickening product layer on the particle being leached. It is shown that the leaching of nickel and cobalt from manganese nodules and zinc-carbon batteries in ammoniacal sulphur dioxide solutions also obey shrinking core kinetics.

"Abstract - Natural gamma-ray measurements were made in the GSC Smeaton drillhole as part of the borehole geophysical classification of kimberlite pipe 169. In addition, forty samples of Cretaceous sediments (shales, siltstones, and sandstones) and thirty-five kimberlite samples, selected from the drill core, were analyzed for major and trace elements. These elements included potassium (K), uranium (U), and thorium (Th), which are the main naturally-occurring radioactive elements.Different phases of the kimberlite, and the Cretaceous sediments which show variations in the gamma-ray activity, can be easily delineated on the gamma-ray logs. The gamma-ray logs indicate that the radioactivity in the kimberlite derives mainly from Th, and, to a lesser extent, U. Most of the kimberlite units are enriched in Th and U relative to the Cretaceous sediments, and these radioelements are mainly hosted by accessory apatite and perovskite, and minor zircon. Potassium concentrations are low in the kimberlite. The higher K concentration in the sediments clearly distinguishes the Cretaceous sediments from the kimberlite.The U/K and Th/K ratios show important and distinct differences between the two major types of volcaniclastic kimberlite. Kimberlite lapillistones have higher U/K and Th/K ratios than the olivine crystal tuffs. Furthermore, standardized U/K and Th/K geophysical logs can be used to separate marine reworked olivine shoreface sands from other shallow marine sediments that contain kimberlitic detritus. The identification of different phases and/or stratigraphic facies of kimberlite on the basis of radioelement distributions means that gamma-ray spectrometry can assist exploration, particularly in regard to diamond grade distribution."
