In the processing of rare earth ores, a pure, mixed rare earth chloride solution is usually produced and used as the feed to solvent extraction circuits to separate the individual rare earths. Cerium(III) may be separated from the other rare earths by oxidising it to cerium(IV), which precipitates as cerium(IV) hydroxide in chloride liquors. This oxidation step may be inserted either before rare earth separation by solvent extraction or between solvent extraction circuits. Although oxidation of cerium by sodium hypochlorite has been known for many years, detailed conditions for oxidation are not readily available. Since milling began in 1909, the PJV Dome mill has been expanded several times, to the current throughput of 11,500 tonnes per day. PJV recovers free gold using crushing and grinding followed by gravity concentration. The remaining gold in the gravity tails is recovered by cyanide leaching followed by Carbon-In -Pulp processing. Prior to 1993, cyanide tailings were impounded in the tailings pond where cyanide was allowed to degrade naturally. Effluent was discharged seasonally during the summer and early autumn to maintain the water balance. In 1993, an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) was designed and constructed for the purpose of removing dissolved metals and suspended solids. In 1997, an INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction process was added to the ETP. Even though the ETP was successful in meeting the cyanide, metals and total suspended solids (TSS) discharge limits, often the treated effluent failed to pass toxicity tests. Following successful laboratory and plant scale testing, the addition of the chelant EDTA (ethylene diamine-tetra-acetic-acid) was commenced in the 1999 operating season. To date, discharged effluent has passed all toxicity tests. This paper describes the evolution of the ETP from its early conception to the various phases of upgrade needed to meet the MISA discharge limits.

In this study, the effects of milling time, chemical composition and heat treatment on microstructure and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Si (6.5-25 at.% Si) alloys prepared by mechanical alloying have been investigated. The results show that increasing the milling time or the Si content, decreases the lattice parameter and increases the internal microstrain. The prepared powders mainly consist of micron-sized particles with an average grain size of less than 20 nm. The specific saturation magnetization values are slightly less than those of single crystal or conventional Fe-Si alloys and decrease as Si content increases. The coercive force values of the nanocrystalline as-milled powders are much higher than those of corresponding Fe-Si bulk alloys with a minimum at 13.5 at.% Si. The values of coercive force decreased after annealing but it seams that the residual strain developed during milling is not the major contributing factor to the higher values of coercive force in the mechanically alloyed powders and nanocrystals behave as single-domain particles without exchange interaction between them.

Caletones Smelter, Division El Teniente of Codelco Chile, has used Teniente Converter (TC) as the only smelting unit since November 2000. The modernization project considered the shutdown of the last reverberatory furnace, the installation of the fourth Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace, the installation of a new fluidized bed dryer and the modification of the concentrate injection system into TC. The modernization project and related investments allowed for the increase of the smelting capacity up to 1.25 million t of concentrate annually.Next stage of the smelter expansion in the year 2004 considered the increase of the smelting capacity up to 1.44 million t/year. The expansion required technology modernization and the installation of the new equipment, such as concentrate injection system, oxygen plant, fluidized bed dryer and storage bin. Currently the annual smelting capacity is about 1.35 million t of copper concentrate, being limited by sulphuric acid plant treatment capacity. This paper presents the technology and production evolution in the Caletones Smelter in the years 2000 - 2006, demonstrating the potential of development and competitiveness of Teniente Converter as world-wide recognized smelting/converting reactor.

"This paper suggests that with the settlement of long-term contracts of fifteen years' duration, with prospects of extension, the coal mining industry has, for the first time, a complete commercial justification for large-scale planning.The labour costs of coal production over past years are analyzed and, with the acceptance of the premise that the basic shift rates are certain to rise in the years to come, the paper suggests that forward planning should provide &r capital investment to make a traditionally labour-dense industry into a capital-dense industry.Automated methods of manpower deployment and timekeeping and the monitoring of all equipment back to a central control point are discussed as ail-important means of obtaining maximum utilization of high-cost capital investment.Principles of payment of the work-force, and the utilization of equipment 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the maximum number of days a year, are dealt with as means of achieving maximum capital utilization. Some of the new technical underground and coal preparation problems which will undoubtedly result from the concentration of workings and maximum machine utilization are discussed, and the author makes suggestions as to how these might be solved.In short, the author predicts that if the coal mining industry is prepared to recognize the problems and invest in modern equipment backed by highly trained staff. then the outcome will justify the high capital investment involved. He stresses the importance of human communications in achieving this end."

ABSTRACT In-situ monitoring of gold dissolution by means of a rotating electrochemical quartzcrystal microbalance unveiled dramatic decreases in gold leaching from sulphide-rich ore after 360 minutes in an actual cyanidation circuit. Pre-oxidation was effective in enhancing gold extraction by preventing a passive film from forming on gold surfaces. This work aims to highlight efforts undertaken to determine (1) how gold cyanidation is limited by passivation, (2) what reactions and mechanisms are involved during sulphide-rich ore cyanidation, and (3) how peroxidation efficiency of an industrial sulphide ore is controlled by galvanic associations between its sulphide constituents.

"Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is near the town of Maimón in Monsenor, Nouel Province (see Figure 1)."

Corrosion of GaAs in aqueous electrolytes is a major limitation in implementing GaAs-based photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion systems, In this work, the corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical methods and surface analysis approaches, in both H2SO4 and NH3?H2O solutions, Open-circuit measurements showed that the cleaned GaAs surface was very sensitive to water/air, Impedance measurements for n-GaAs showed that an inductive loop only appeared at a high corrosion rate because a reaction intermediate is the oxidant for a further decomposition step in combination with chemical reaction with water, The results suggest that the same corrosion/decomposition mechanism occurred on n-GaAs in the two solutions, When the surface-hole concentration was low, the hole injection or generation process was the rate-determining step, At large reverse bias on n-GaAs, with high-hole concentration, the corrosion rate was limited by a Faradaic adsorption process, involving an adsorbed intermediate, The different surface compositions after corrosion in the two solutions can be explained by the dissolution of As(0), Further oxidation of As(0) to As(III) in NH3?H2O solution is still slow, as suggested from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis,

The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

"The objective of this investigation was to study the reaction mechanisms during the reduction of iron oxides in the presence of calcium chloride and carbon black as a simplified iron segregation process. The gas phase was analyzed by mass spectroscopy and the solid reaction products were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Mass spectroscopy, combined with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, revealed the presence of several gases at elevated temperatures over time, and the scanning electron microscope in combination with energy dispersive X-ray analysis illustrated the growth of a metallic iron phase on or near the carbon substrate. The results correlated well with similar copper and nickel segregation processes, but also introduced new insights that challenge the simplicity of the current models. The formation and transport of gaseous iron species to the carbon substrate in the presence of steam and hydrogen were evident during the reduction process that was studied; however, there is more happening at a mineralogical level, based on evidence of a liquid phase resulting in substantial growth due to an apparent fluxing effect created by the calcium chloride.These results help to better explain the chemical reactions and, in turn, the thermodynamics and kinetics of iron segregation processes related to the beneficiation of low grade complex iron ores. The results are also applicable to the production of metallic iron and concentrated titanium dioxide from ilmenite ores. The benefit of this process is that it allows ores in which the iron minerals are intimately associated with gangue minerals to be processed in circumstances where conventional mineral processing techniques are unsuitable or incapable of upgrading the material."

"Abstract -A test survey using the MEGATEMII airborne electromagnetic system was flown over the Iso and New Insco massive sulfide orebodies in the Rouyn-Noranda mining camp, Canada. The results were compared with data from historical systems (INPUT, DIGHEM) used to discover the deposits. The historical data show that the two deposits have comparable conductances. However, the modern MEGATEMII system reveals that the New Insco deposit has a much slower decay than the Iso deposit, and it is, therefore, interpreted to be more conductive. The MEGATEMII anomaly maps provide estimates of the location, depth, dip, and strike of the two deposits, information that was not available from the historical anomaly maps. The signal-to-noise ratio of the MEGATEMII data is greater than the historical data, yielding more sharply defined anomalies. The investigations also included a comparison between 90 Hz and 30 Hz MEGATEMII data. The 90 Hz data were found to be useful for mapping the less conductive parts of the Iso body, whereas the 30 Hz data demonstrated that the New Insco body is more conductive. Analysis of height attenuation data over the Iso body indicates that the body could be seen by the MEGATEMII system if it were buried an additional 230 m deeper (in highly resistive material). On the other hand, the INPUT system would detect the Iso body only if it were buried no deeper than an additional 60 m. Tests with the transmitter turned off showed that, for this flight, the MEGATEMII system noise levels on the processed data are about 300 pT/s. Sommaire - Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche, un ensemble de levés d’essais électromagnétiques aéroportés employant le système de MEGATEMII a été effectué au dessus des dépôts d’Iso et de New Insco, Rouyn-Noranda, Canada. Les données ont été comparées avec les réponses des systèmes qui ont découvert ces deux dépôts (INPUT et DIGHEM). Les données antérieures montrent que le dépôt d’Iso a une conductance comparable à celle de New Insco. In view of the alarm expressed in many quarters over the increased production of copper to come from Canada and Africa in the future, it is of interest to study the history of the principal producing districts of the world and to attempt to forecast the future part to be played by them. Tables 1 and 2 record the world production and that of the United States, together with their respective rates of increase, both in percentage and actual amounts. The important point in this record is the decline in rates of increase for both the world and the United States, but more particularly in that of the latter, since 1881. The increase for the United States in the last decade is less than that for any decade since 1881, and is only 20 per cent of that for the decade 1911-20. The increase for the world is less than that for the two preceding decades, and is only about 65 per cent of the war decade 1911-20. Referring to Table 1, the decade 1871to1880 showed an increase of 32.l per cent in the world's production, which was the low until the last decade, ending 1930, which shows an increase of only 24.5 per cent. These decades both represent periods of economic stress following wars. In the first case the recovery was very sharp, the percentage increase in 1881-90 reaching a high of 86.4 per cent. It would seem dangerous, however, to assume that a similar high will be reached in the next ten years, because of the severity of the depression brought about by the Great War and the probability of its influence extending well into the next decade.

Reaction between xanthate ions in solution and oxidized compounds present on the surface of galena to form lead xanthate is considered to be a side reaction not contributing to flotation, although accounting for some consumption of reagent. The direct reaction of lead sulphide with xanthate and oxygen to form lead xanthate is the most significant to flotation. Coadsorntion of dixanthogen is also involved. Previous work has shown lead recovery in lead rougher flotation to be a function of m [H+] where: m = concentration of xanthate in solution rHl = hydrogen ion concentration. A plausible explanation for this relationship is suggest-ed. Likewise, the experimental findings that the amount of xanthate adsorbed under certain conditions is a function of m'[H+] are explained in terms of reaction between xanthate ions and soluble basic lead salts such as PbO.PbS04? It is also shown that m[H+] should have a constant value in lead cleaners operating at a higher pH than the roughers. This conclusion is confirmed by plant data, and the value of the constant agrees well with the calculated value. The finding is useful in mill control.

GENERALLY speaking, the Industry lost ground in 1941 in its accident experience. Though the frequency of compensation accidents was but slightly higher than in the previous year and well below past experience, our fatality rate shot up to that obtaining in 1938, and the average cost per man employed was the highest for some time. The number of fatalities was 56 in 1941 as against 33 in 1940. The average cost of compensation per man employed was $34.25 in 1941 as against $28.43. There was but a slight increase in the number of men employed. Accident prevention efforts were maintained, as shown by our frequency, but our accidents were of a more serious nature. In a period of considerable labour turnover, with many new men entering the Industry, especially the base-metal division, and much mental distraction, we might well have expected a high rate of accidents. That this did not occur is a tribute to managers, supervisors, and workmen alike. We all regret the high fatality rate and one must consider why this occurred. So far as it is possible to determine, there is no apparent explanation. There were no disasters. The accidents occurred to the same class of work-men, both in respect to jobs and age groups, and from the same age-old causes that we all know so well. Luck is a big factor in the seriousness of an accident; the solution lies in preventing accidents, even first-aid cases. Generally speaking, if minor accidents do not occur, major accidents do not occur.

As the amount of construction information used in the growing construction field increases, the importance of efficient construction field management has been growing. Therefore, construction industry have been tried to introduce and conjugate various software and IT technology such as PMIS, Web Camera, RFID, GPS, PDA. However, existing IT technology especially PMIS have not been performed systematically because of difficulty of real time information collection and decision-making from the insufficient handy equipment. These problems make construction manager cannot efficiently respond to diverse condition occur in construction sites. In addition, after the completion, individual who use PMIS have to move another site and use another system so than cannot use information from previous sites. On the other hand, development of IT technology transmute PDA phone for text-based work like schedule management, internet research to smart phone for network based multimedia service. In other words, smart phone is not just IT equipment but new way for overall industry and it can satisfy the demand IT technology on construction sites. Therefore, the purpose of this study is introduce mobile based individual unit PMIS system using cloud computing and SNS which is in development progress. It is expected to be possible to collect and record the real-time information that occur at the site and make rapid decisions based on the recorded information, by converting the office works that are managed based on the site PC or Web, if the site management system that is based on the smart phones and Cloud computing that will be constructed through this research are utilized. After this study, it is necessary to research about interwork with project unit PMIS system and test on real construction site.

For engineering applications, magnesium is usually alloyed with one or more elements which include aluminium, manganese, rare earth metals, lithium, zinc, and zirconium. Under normal environmental conditions, the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is comparable or better than that of mild steel. The oxide film thickness on pure magnesium after exposure for only ?10 seconds at ambient temperature is 2.2 ± 0.3 nm. Exposure to humid air or to water leads to the formation of a thick hydrated amorphous film that has an oxidation rate less than 0.01 pm/ y. E-pH diagram and high temperature corrosion are discussed. The pH values between 8.5 and 11.5 correspond to a relatively protective oxide or hydroxide film that is more stable at higher pH. Structural applications of magnesium alloys are limited by creep strength rather than by oxidation. Active and active-passive behaviours of magnesium alloys are discussed. The pilling Bedworth Ratio values of oxide and hydroxide are 0.79 and 1.77 respectively and so the formation of Mg(OH)2 inside the oxide film could lead to the development of cracks. Microbiologically influenced corrosion and rational biodegradation of magnesium alloys are discussed because of their interest for medical care.

Effect of friction stir welding parameters and natural ageing on weld properties are reported. Using a Taguchi design of experiment, attempt is made to systematically examine the influences of the welding speed, tool rotation speed, forge force, tilt angle and pitch ratio on the weld size and ultimate tensile strength of FSWed joints. One millimetre thick plates of AA7075-T6 were welded in lap joint configuration. Samples were characterized by optical microscopy, hardness and tensile measurements. Trends suggested by the results and directions for further investigation are discussed.

ABSTRACT Stope backfilling is a common operation in many underground mines, which requires a barricade at the base of the stope near the drift entrance to retain the backfill in place. In this paper, the distribution of pore-water pressure in barricades made of waste rock is analyzed. An analytical solution is introduced and applied to estimate the pore-water pressure along the base and full height of the barricade. Results show that the analytical solution generally accurately predicts the distribution of pore-water pressure obtained from the numerical calculations, especially in the upstream part of the barricade, where it is most critical.

As aircraft age, the extent of interactions between fatigue and other damage mechanisms, such as corrosion and fretting, increases. At present, however, there is no generally accepted methodology within the Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) framework to account for the effects of these interactions on life and the residual strength of aging aircraft components. A comprehensive program is being carried out by the National Research Council Canada in collaboration with Analytical Processes/Engineered Solutions, using the Holistic Structural Integrity Process (HOLSIP) to address time and cyclic load issues. This approach predicts the evolution of a discontinuity state in a material from production to retirement. This paper summarizes the results of a study on the 2024-T3 aluminium alloy in different forms (clad and unclad), thickness, and specimen geometry. This study consisted of identifying the microstructural features associated with crack nucleation sites and relating them to the testing parameters and fatigue life. Several coupons were fabricated and fatigue-tested. The fracture surfaces were carefully examined, and the physical characteristics of the microstructural features found near the crack nucleation sites were analyzed. Effect of stress level, loading direction, coupon geometry and surface condition on the number of crack nucleation sites, and fracture origin size has been discussed. Four distinctive mechanisms were found to be responsible for crack nucleation: for unclad materials constituent particles, oxide residue, surface irregularities and for clad samples the clad layer was the sole fracture origin.
