ABSTRACT: The Victor diamond mine is located in the James Bay lowlands, 90 km west of the First Nations village of Attawapiskat. The project was the first of its kind in northern Ontario. The process plant was designed to produce a 95 to 98% by weight diamond concentrate through three stages of comminution, dense medium separation, and proprietary X-ray technology for final recovery. The plant was commissioned over a period of six months, commencing prior to substantial completion of construction. Through effective planning of the commissioning phase, the Victor mine start-up was safely completed nine months ahead of schedule.

"The rare earths industry started in Austria in 1887 by Carl Auer von Welsbach (1858-1929) Professor of Chemistry at the University of Vienna. The process was based on monazite sand transported from Brazil as shipping ballast free of charge. This made possible producing thorium, cerium, and other rare earths at a low cost, thus permitting the growth of the industry. However, once the Brazilian authorities realized the strategic importance of the sand, shipping was stopped. Brazil then started its own processing of the sand in 1949. The background for Auer’s work, the role of Robert Bunsen in Heidelberg, and the invention of the spectroscope will be presented. INTRODUCTIONHeidelberg on the Neckar (Figure 1) was the meeting place for chemistry students from all over Europe in the nineteenth century. Her university founded in 1386 had already a famous professor of chemistry and medecine in the Faculty of Medicine by the name Leopold Gmelin whose three - volume Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie appeared in 1817-1819, that became later a multi-volume monumental work. As successor to Gmelin came Robert Bunsen (Figure 2) in 1852 who made this university town the Mecca of chemistry students. One of his students, the English Henry Roscoe (1833-1915) who became later a distinguished professor in Manchester, described him as follows: ""As an investigator he was great, as a teacher he was greater, as a man and a friend he was greatest""."

"The electrolytic tankhouse at CCR was recognized by management as lagging behind modem refineries in terms of productivity, energy efficiency and controls. The operation was also burdened by high maintenance costs of cells, floors and electrolyte recirculation systems.A bench marking program was started in 1986 to evaluate processes and other technology by visiting major copper refineries in North America, Europe and Japan. The basic principles necessary to optimize the operation were defined, and a program calledCCR 2000 was prepared for approval of the necessary capital investments.This paper describes the results obtained to date and outlines the remaining work to complete the modernization program, in particular, the control of electrolytes, the elimination of the Baltimore groove and studies to modernize the stripping operation or adopt permanent cathode technology.IntroductionThe CCR Refinery of Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining (Noranda Minerals Inc.) , in Montreal East, is one of the world 's largest custom copper and precious metal refineries with a capacity to refine 350000 tonnes of copper per year. The silver refinery, which treats the copper tankhouse anode slime, foreign slime and precious metal ingots, produces 800 000 kg of silver, 26 000 kg of gold and 3800 kg of platinum-palladium concentrate annually. Copper anodes are received from the Horne Smelter at Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Mines Gaspe Division in Murdochville, Quebec. CCR also refines anodes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. in FIin Flon, Manitoba, and remelts anode scrap along with blister and purchased copper scrap ."

Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

?Intelligent mine? conjures up a futuristic image of unmanned extractors and loaders working in harsh conditions in a remote lunar landscape. The promise of increasing mine fleet productivity and solving the problem labor shortages in mining regions can certainly be achieved today through remote controlled extraction and automated hauling. The technology is available and it doesn?t seem to be so much science fiction when Google?s self-driving cars hurtle down the freeway. ?Intelligent mining,? on the other hand, implies the application of information technology at every phase of the mining value chain, from exploration and geological modeling to equipment, operations and maintenance, and logistics and transportation. These are really industry-specific, enterprise-class software solutions focused on using information technology to support the business processes of mining and make them more efficient and effective. Overlaying the physical world with the digital or virtual world enables us to model and simulate our assets, giving us the ability to effectively design, build, and ultimately optimize the performance and reliability of our assets throughout the lifecycle. The digital asset, often a 3D model, is created initially during the engineering and construction phase, and is handed over to the operator before the mine goes into operation. Combined with geospatial or geographic information systems, the operator has a complete digital representation of the physical world, which forms the foundation for risk and performance management, along with compliance and regulatory reporting. Laser scanning and positioning technology can be used to create point clouds ? information models consisting of millions of data points ? which enable the visualization and representation of the ?as-operated? reality. But consider that once the mine is in operation, it throws off an endless stream of data in the form of performance and condition data from sensors and monitoring devices on fixed and mobile assets through networks, servers, and services. This ?big data? can be processed and analyzed to spot trends, help predict events, and formulate reliability strategies as early as the design stage (e.g., reliability-centered design). ?Intelligent mining? implies that massive amounts of data augment the reality of the physical mine, plant, and equipment. This embedded intelligence can be used to optimize operational efficiency, increase asset availability and utilization, improve safety and environmental integrity, and maximize return on investment. Lastly, the sweet spot for intelligent mining is seen in the convergence of consumerization and industrialization. The application of ?consumer? technologies that we use every day on our iPhones and Android devices, such as cameras, motion sensors, and positioning in an industrial context, are producing ?immersive? experiences. Overlaying the digital world on the physical world and connecting them accurately through intelligent positioning results in ?intelligent infrastructure,? which is safer and more sustainable. Introduction During the past three years at least fifty strings of 9% nickel steel tubing have exhibited excellent resistance .to the variably severe corrosive conditions typical of many of the sweet condensate wells in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. This experience, and the characteristically outstanding performance of other ?nickel alloy steels under hydrogen sulphide corrosive conditions, dictated the selection of 9% nickel steel tubing for the second well drilled in the sour condensate Pincher Creek field of southwestern Alberta. The damaging effects of the Pincher Creek reservoir fluids on well equipment had been manifested in the discovery well by the rapid and not yet fully understood failure of API Grade N-80 tubing, stainless steel wire lines, and alloy steel fishing tools. Two very unexpected failures in the 9% nickel steel tubing, after only six days of service in production tests, instigated an extensive and continuing investigation to ascertain the probable cause of failure. This discussion presents some of the results obtained thus far which cast a little light on the perplexing behaviour of steels in hydrogen sulphide environments in general, and in sour condensate wells in particular. History of Tubing Failures Walter Marr well No. 1, in which the 9% nickel steel tubing failures occurred, produces from the Madison lime at the depth interval approximately 12,200 to 12,750 feet. The gas-oil ratio is about 26,000 and the gas contains 10.2 per cent hydrogen sulphide and 6.3 per cent carbon dioxide by volume.

These programs have led to the discovery and the development of deposits such as architectural granite, graphite and dolomite, and have also led to inventories of occurrences and prospects of wollastonite, silica, calcite, dolomite, alumina silicates and rare earths. The deposits discovered lately are presently being quarried or will be in the near future. The most promising occurrences and prospects have been claimed."

"Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

THERE are, broadly speaking, three classes of refractories: acid, basic, and neutral. Fireclay, diaspore, silica, and the sillimanite group of minerals are included in the acid class, which for the most part are not very resistant to basic slags. The neutra! class includes chrome, graphite, and silicon carbide, while most important in the basic class are magnesite and dolomite. Although chrome is a neutral refractory, it has no sharp distinction from magnesitic refractoriness. The two are mineralogically (1) and chemically related, and there is available on the market a complete range of brick from straight chrome to straight magnesite. In many indus trial applications, one. type may be replaced by another. The present paper is confined entirely to such refractories. "This research determines shear strength and stiffness properties of bedding planes and joints in the roof strata rocks within 7.5 to 9 m (25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois #6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). A shear test loading device was designed into a 1.334 kN (150 t) Forney Compression Loading Machine to perform direct shear tests in accordance with ASTM D5607-08 “Standard Test Method for Performing Laboratory Direct Shear Strength Tests of Rock Specimens under Constant Normal Force”. The data were used to determine peak and residual friction angles and the dilation angle. A total of 49 bedding plane samples were tested, out of which 46 (36 intact and 10 relatively weak and loose) samples passed QA/QC procedures in accordance to ASTM D5607. Samples from eight (8) different bedding planes- shale/limestone (SL), shale/sandstone (SSs), shale/bone (SB), laminated sandstone (LS), shale/shale (SS), bone/bone (BB), bone/limestone (BL), and limestone/limestone (LL) were tested. The number of samples tested for each bedding plane were: SL- 11, SSs- 8, SB- 5, BB- 4, LS- 6, SS- 9, BL- 1, and LL- 2. Peak and residual shear strength values at 2.75 MPa normal stress range 1.06 – 6.26 MPa and 0.82 MPa to 0.82 – 4.14 MPa, respectively. The average normal and shear stiffness values are about 11.98 GPa/m and 3.11 GPa/m. Dilation angles are low (<10?) and negative in some cases. Angle of sliding friction values range from 9? to 42?. Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were less than 10.INTRODUCTIONRock mass may be defined as the total in situ rock medium containing bedding planes, faults, joints, folds and other structural features. Therefore, it is discontinuous and may have heterogeneous and anisotropic engineering properties. Upon creation of an excavation in a rock mass, bedding planes and joints are the most likely points of failure initiation. The failure typically occurs either in tensile or shear mode. Upon failure initiation stresses are transferred to the neighboring rock mass and the failure progresses until stability is achieved through equilibrium of stresses and strength. An example of this mechanism is development of the pressure arch. This study determined the shear strength and stiffness properties in shear and compression of bedding planes and joints in the immediate roof strata rocks within 7.5-9 m ( 25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois No. 6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). Since such data are currently not available for Illinois Coal Basin mines, researchers and engineers have been using estimated values for design purposes. The immediate roof lithology in the proposed mining area consists of shale 0.62 m; Bone 0.09 m (0.3 ft.); Limestone, 0.10 m (0.33 ft.); Shale 2.37 m (7.9 ft.); and sandstone 0.55 m (1.83 ft.). The bedding plane samples were provided by a mine in south-eastern Illinois operating at a depth of about 180 m (600 ft.)."

HighService has developed different equipment using wireless technology and machine vision systems that were specially designed to allow 1) the online determination of the SAG mills liner&apos;s service life, 2) the automatic detection of a missing dipper tooth in mineral extraction shovels, 3) the reduction of accident risk potential in the mineral transportation within the mine, and 4) the reduction of collision risk potential between shovels and wheel dozers during mineral extraction. For the development of all these systems at HighService, extensive research has been done in radio frequency and image processing fields. The integration of both technologies with the expert knowledge of the company on the typical harsh environment conditions of the mining industry has led to the development of heavy duty equipment that tolerate the extreme mechanical requirements of SAG mills and electrical mining shovels.

Single-pass hybrid laser-arc welding of 10-mm thick cast plates of CA6NM, a low carbon martensitic stainless steel, was carried out in butt joint configuration using a continuous wave fiber laser at its maximum power of 5.2 kW over welding speeds ranging from 0.75 m/min to 1.2 m/min. The microstructures from the fusion zone to the heat affected zone and base metal were characterized after post-weld tempering at 600°C for 1 hour. From optical and scanning electron microscopy examination, the fusion zone was observed to mainly consist of tempered lath martensite and some residual delta-ferrite. The mechanical properties including microindentation hardness, ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact energy were evaluated in the post-weld tempered condition and correlated to the microstructures and defects. The ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact energy values of all the fully penetrated welds in the tempered condition were acceptable according to ASTM, ASME and industrial specifications. The failure mechanisms during tensile deformation and Charpy impact loading were examined by scanning electron microscopy, fractography and optical metallographic analysis near the fracture origin.

Reactions of gold?phosphino complexes [(AuX)(PR3)] (X= Cl, Br, I; R = organic rest) with Se(SiMe3)2 lead to the formation of gold complexes with chalcogenide bridges. The reaction of the complex Ph3PAuCl and tBuSe(SiMe3) gives the cluster [Au5Se2(PPh3)4]Cl 1. The in situ preparation of the complex [(AuCl)2dpph] (dpph = Ph2P(CH2)6PPh2) by reaction of dpph with Me2SAuCl, and subsequent reaction with Se(SiMe3)2 leads to the formation of [(Au3Se)2(dpph)3]Cl2 2. Reactions of the gold(I) complex [(AuCl)2dpppe], (dpppe = Ph2P(CH2)5PPh2) with Se(SiMe3)2 and InCl3 in different molar ratios lead to the formation of [Au10Se4(dpppe)4]InCl5 3 and [Au4(SeInCl3)2(dpppe)2] 4. The reaction of [(AuCl)2dpph] with Te(SiMe3)2 and GaCl3 produces the isostructural cluster compound [Au4(TeGaCl3)2(dpph)2] 5. From the reaction of Se(SiMe3)2 with [(AuCl)2dppe] (dppe = Ph2P(CH2)2PPh2) and InCl3 [Au8Se4In(dppe)4](InCl4)3 6 can be isolated. The structures of 1 - 6 were determined by X?ray diffraction.

Anode casting has been in operation for two years in Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting&apos;s Flin Flon smelter. The new plant allows all casting to be done on one shift and so achieves considerable labour savings. The equipment and operations are described. Some important features are as follows: very consistent anode weights by the use of the load-cell controlled casting ladle; excellent mould life ; very low reject rate; and trouble-free take -off tower. Some of the start-up problems are described and an outline is given of the main operator functions. Data on labour, propane and maintenance costs are presented.

The methyl substituted binuclear cyclometallated gold(I) complexes [Au2(?-n-MeC6H3PPh2)2] [n = 4, 5 and 6] all undergo oxidative addition reactions with halogens and, in the case of the 4- and 5-methyl substituted analogues, with dibenzoyl peroxide to give metal-metal bonded digold(II) complexes [Au2X2(?-C6H3-n-MePPh2)2]. The 4- and 5-methyl substituted digold(II) compounds on warming or exposure to light undergo carbon-carbon coupling reactions to give gold(I) complexes containing the corresponding 2,2&apos;-n,n&apos;-biphenylyldiphenylphosphines. The 6- methyl substituted digold(II) complexes rapidly isomerise above ca. -20° C to binuclear heterovalent gold(I)/gold(III) compounds [XAu(?-2-Ph2PC6H3-6-Me)AuX{?2-(6-MeC6H3-2-PPh2)}], containing a fourmembered cyclometallated ring on a gold(III) centre. Surprisingly, no carbon-carbon coupling could be induced for any of the 6-methyl substituted compounds, even under forcing conditions. This difference in reactivity of the 6- methyl derivative, compared to that of the 5-methyl and unsubstituted analogues was studied by ab initio calculations using a series of model compounds. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings and suggest that the key-step in the C-C coupling reaction is the partial opening of the Au(III)-P bond in one of the transition states. In the 6-methyl system this transition state is energetically inaccessible and hence no C-C coupling occurs.

"IntroductionThe Yellowknife greenstone belt lies along the west side of Yellowknife bay on the north shore of Great Slave lake, some 600 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. The producing gold mines along the belt include the Con-Rycon and Negus which came into production in 1938 and 1939, and the Giant Yellowknife, which followed in 1948. In addition to these, the Akaitcho and Crestaurum mines are potential producers and there are several promising prospects.Early geological work along the belt was done by A. W. Jolliffe who first recognized a number of great faults, the largest of which is the West Bay fault with a horizontal movement of more than 3 miles. In 1943, A. S. Dadson, following an examination of the Giant-Yellowknife property, advanced the hypothesis that Baker Creek valley was underlain by a series of major gold-bearing shear zones. Subsequent diamond drilling in 1944 bore out the correctness of this view and outlined the great ore-bearing shear zones that are now being developed and mined by Giant Yellowknife Gold Mines. Near the south boundary of the Giant property, the shear zones are cut off by the West Bay fault. This prompted Neil Campbell, District Geologist for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, to make a detailed study of the geology along the West Bay fault in the hope of finding the faulted extension of the Giant shear-zone system on the west side of this fault. In this he was entirely successful. By careful geological mapping he matched several faulted diabase dykes on both sides of the fault and, knowing their dip, determined the horizontal and vertical components of movement along the fault. Subsequent •diamond drilling based on Campbell's work located the presumed correlative of the Giant shear-zone system on the Con-Rycon and Negus properties, where it has been named the Campbell zone or system. At the present time, all production at the Negus Mines property is coming from orebodies along the Campbell zone."

Computational chemistry methods, such as density functional theory (DFT), are powerful tools to quantify reagent-mineral interactions encountered in sulphide mineral flotation. A quantitative relationship between theoretically calculated parameters based on chemical structure of collectors and their reactivity with different metals/minerals can provide valuable insights for design and development of more powerful and tailor-made reagents offering enhanced metal/mineral selectivity. DFT calculations at B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level were employed to elucidate the reactivity of neutral sulphide collector reagents, including thionocarbamates (TC), thioureas (TU), xanthogen-formates (XF), dialkyldithiocarbamates (DTC) and dialkyltrithiocarbonates (TTC) with different heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+) in solution. The extent of delocalization of lone pair electrons of heteroatoms (attached directly to C in C=S) over C=S group was found to be the dominant factor in determining the collector’s reactivity. Order of reactivity was established as: TU > TC > XF > DTC > TTC. All the collectors showed superior affinity towards copper followed by lead. Unidentate binding was observed through sulphur atom except for xanthogen-formate for which bidentate binding mode was observed. Effect of nature of substituent groups at N and/or O atom on reactivity of thionocarbamate and thiourea was also investigated. The results obtained through DFT calculations are consistent with the experimental data reported in literature.

Introduction The Horne mine, the property of Noranda Mines, Limited, has in the last six years become one of Canada&apos;s leading gold and copper producers. Since the smelter was blown-in during December, 1927, up to the end of 1933, it has produced approximately 1,200,000 oz. of gold and 35O,OOO,OOO lb. of copper. The property is situated within an area occupied entirely by pre-Cambrian rocks and characterized by the complexity of rock types and structures common in such terrain. But apart from this the mine also presents other features of unusual interest in the size, number, and variety of the ore-bodies, the mineralogical associations, and the rather exceptional values both in gold and copper. It is not surprising, therefore, that a study of the geology of the mine should bring to light many interesting problems. The present paper summarizes, as concisely as possible, the results of such a study. Actually, it is a much abridged version of a more comprehensive and detailed paper completed by the writer a year ago (1), but embodying certain corrections and additional data made possible as a result of further development at the mine and of field work carried out during the summer of 1933. Owing to limitations of space, the paper is, in the main, a presentation of conclusions arrived at in the course of the study. Much of the supporting evidence cited in the thesis referred to has, of necessity, been omitted here.
