"The Kori Kollo gold deposit is hosted by a c.15 Ma sericitized dacite stock in the LaJoya district on the Bolivian Altiplano. The mineralization is of the Bolivian polymetallic vein(BPV) type, with a signi?cant amount of the gold reserves contained in the oxide cap.Field and microscopic studies, K-Ar dating, ??34S values of pyrite, alunite and jarosite, and ??18O values of alunite and jarosite demonstrate that some of this gold is supergene. Two types of supergene gold are present: minute gold grains, 1 to 10 microns across, of high fineness and associated with jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides; and ‘invisible’ gold, which is probably sorbed onto minerals such as jarosite and iron oxy-hydroxides.Pyrite ??34S values fall in the limited range -3.5 ± 0.6‰, consistent with a magmatic origin. Sulfate ??34S values are homogeneous and overlap closely with those of pyrite (-1.2 ± 2.1‰), which supports petrographic evidence that sulfates replaced pyrite. By contrast, sulfate ??18O values are inhomogeneous with a large range (alunite +2 to 26‰, jarosite -5 to +18‰). These data are interpreted as reflecting kinetically controlled reactions involving various proportions of atmospheric oxygen and local meteoric water. This is typical of supergene alteration and is due to the seasonally dry climate of the Altiplano.The oxide-zone mineralogy is dominated by sulfates and iron oxy-hydroxide minerals with some phosphates and halides, which indicates that the groundwaters were acidic, oxidizing and relatively saline. Under these conditions the most likely complexes responsible for gold mobilization are halides.Geological data and K-Ar ages indicate that oxidation of the BPV deposits began at least around 11 Ma and possibly up to 15 Ma ago, and that supergene alteration lasted until around 4 Ma. During this period, erosion was minimal. Although supergene processes have been active on the Bolivian Altiplano since the Middle Miocene, in contrast to Northern Chile, enrichment of gold has not occurred."

Cable supports offer several advantages over traditional secondary support methods by enhancing stress redistribution to pillars and gob areas, minimizing or eliminating timbers and cribs that reduce ventilation, eradicating material-handling injuries related to placement of crib supports, and providing a cost-effective alternative to secondary support. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), researching alternatives to traditional roof support methods, designed and installed high-strength cable supports to improve the stability of longwall gate road entries in a western U.S. coal mine. With the cooperation of industry, methods were developed to install and evaluate cable supports in a tailgate area using traditional resin cartridges. The cable-bolted areas successfully maintained roof support throughout the developed entries. Cable supports have replaced wood cribbing as secondary support in the bleeder entry system and have minimized or eliminated the use of cribbing in the longwall tailgate entries. This paper describes the theory, application, and advantages of cable supports and presents some mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

"Recognition of the diamond potential of the Wawa subprovince was initially determined from regional data using a kimberlite model. The world’s largest stable Precambrian craton, the Superior Province, is considered to be favourable for the emplacement of diamondiferous kimberlite. The Wawa area is located near the intersection of intra-craton structures visible in the regional magnetic data.The Enigma project is located north of the town of Wawa in northern Ontario. From field evidence and background research, it became obvious that in the Wawa area there were at least two potentially diamond-hosting events, Archean lamprophyric volcaniclastics and Proterozoic kimberlites. The host lamprophyric rock does not contain the classical KIM signatures. However, to complicate the Enigma, stream sediment samples within 200 m of the diamond-bearing lamprophyre produced a typical suite of kimberlite indicator minerals.The micro- and macro-diamond content of the Wawa lamprophyric volcaniclastic rocks is typically 0.2 ct/t to 1 ct/t, although it can be higher locally. The economic diamond potential of these Archean dykes, sills and irregular lamprophyre bodies is still under-explored (Kaminsky, 2002, unpubl.). Oasis Diamond Exploration is currently exploring the area using geophysical, geochemical, and geological data."

Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

This paper relates the story of 100 years of mining in the Harbour Seam at the Princess Colliery, Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. Several interesting anecdotes are included along with the discussion of the evolution of coal mining methods in the area. Finally, some of the recently introduced equipment at Princess Colliery is described, and prospects for the future of the industry are outlined.

This is the fourth in a series of coal technology reviews being prepared. in accordance with a recommendation voted by the Coal Division C.I.M. in session at the Jubilee Meeting, Vancouver, 1948, that the Department of Mines and Resources be requested to arrange for publication by the proper Government authority of a Quarterly Review of Coal Technology for distribution among those concerned in the production and use of coal in Canada. Copies of the first review, which appeared in the November, 1948, BULLETIN, pp. 612-614, of the second review in the June, 1949, BULLETIN, pp. 272-275, and of the third review in April, 1950, BUL-LETIN, pp. 1,9?3-196 (also, respectively, in Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262-264 Vol. LU, 1949, pp. 117-120, and Vol: LIU, 1950, pp. 133-136), were distributed by the Dominion Coal Board and are still available on request. In this review, the first in the series in the field of combustion, development and trends during the period approximately from World War II to the present time are described and therefore the presentation is general. Later reviews will particularize developments in relation to the range of coals available in Canada.-ED. A program to provide technical in-formation on the use of fuels in pyro-metallurgical processes, from the Canadian fuel viewpoint, was initiated about five years ago by a Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy liaison grou1> composed of members from the Coal Research Committee of the Coal Division and the Iron and Steel Committee of the Metallurgy Division. This paper is another of a series prepared for this program. "IntroductionTHE PROCEDURE and technique for drilling holes has probably undergone as great a change during the past ten years as any one of the other operations conducted in hard-rock mining. During this period, we have seen a change from the heavy leyners and drifters to the light jackleg type of drill machine; from steels that were forged and hardened on the bit end to the inserted •carbide-tipped rod, from the necessity of providing special bit-end fabrication and beat treatment of shank steels to the simple grinding or turning of a plain section on a shank with no heat treatment required for bit attachment.When the steel maker was first called upon to manufacture a hollow drill rod, it was required that the steel must not only have sufficient strength and fatigue resistance to cope with the stresses of service, but also must be capable of being heat treated on the bit end to a high hardness for resistance to wear and abrasion . Little was known at that time about alloy steels and the beneficial effects to be gained from additions of chromium, nickel , and molybdenum. So it was that the plain 0.80 per cent carbon analysis was selected, since it had already proven to be a suitable grade for chisels, hammers, and other such shock tools. This grade has long endured the test of time and is still used in considerable tonnage today, particularly by the construction industry.As the metallurgist learned more about the influence of alloying elements, a new hollow drill analysis was placed on the market in the early 'thirties'."

The lower and the upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation, Hubei Province, China, contain silicate-type K-rich beds (illite and feldspar), and intraclastic phosphorites, as well as Ag-V and V deposits in a "Black Shale Series". The K-rich beds fonned in an anoxic basin whereas the phosphorites fonned in a more oxic and higher energy depositional environment. The Black Shale Series occurs in the lower and upper parts of the Doushantuo Fonnation; that in the upper part consists of black illite shale and dark gray dolostone, and contains Se-rich Ag and V deposits. These deposits are of more industrial significance than the previously discovered Ni-Mo polyelement sulfide deposits which occur in the Lower Cambrian Black Shales Series of South China. Studies of lithotype, sedimentary sequence, and geochemistry of the Doushantuo Fonnation have led to more attention being focused on the uppennost Black Shale Series and its Ag-V and V deposits. There are three ore types: black, Ag-V-rich, illite shale; black, V-rich, illite shale; and dark gray, Ag-Vrich, fmely crystalline dolostone. The first two ore types contain 3070 to 5% Corg and the last, 1.25%. The Ag-bearing minerals are naumannite, argyrodite, aguilarite, acanthite, and native silver that occur as inclusions in pyrite associated with barite. Vanadium substitutes for AI in illite and is also related to organic-matter contents. Because (1) the pre-Sinian Kongling Group contains one to three times greater than the Clark Ag value; (2) black, illite shale has a negative Ce anomaly; and (3) there are large occurrences of black, K-rich, tuffaceous, fme siltstone, the sources of Ag are thought to include subaerial and submarine volcanic materials. It is proposed that Ag, V, and Se were absorbed by clay particles and organic matter during syngenetic deposition in an anoxic environment; Ag subsequently was reconcentrated into sulfides and selenides, whereas V was incorporated structurally into illite during early and late diagenesis. These types of Black Shale Series-hosted Ag-V and V deposits are, therefore, considered to be sedimentary-diagenetic in origin.

The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

"The Island Mountain mine is at the southeast end of Island mountain; across Jack of Clubs lake from the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine.; The orebodies consist of quartz veins and pyritic replacement deposits in limestone. To December 31; 1944; there has been mined 296; 273 tons of quartz-vein ore averaging about 0.34 oz. gold a ton; and 101; 002 tons of sulphide ore averaging about 0.83 oz. gold a ton; a total of 397; 275 tons averaging 0.46 oz. From this; 175; 985 fine oz. of gold and about 26; 450 fine oz. of silver were recovered; having a value of $6; 510; 521.More than 95 per cent of the production has come from a band 500 feet wide along the contact of the Rainbow and overlying Baker members and extending about 100 feet into the latter. Evidence that the Rainbow belongs stratigraphically above the Baker is presented later in this paper. Both members are most variable lithologically, and individual beds and whole series of beds pinch out in short distances. In part, at least, this is due to squeezing out incidentally to intense folding. No section can be claimed with assurance to be really representative. However, both memb.ers are composed predominantly of quartzitic rocks. Both contain argillaceous quartzite, argillite, limy quartzite, limy argillite, limestone (marble), and minor amounts of highly ankeritized rocks believed to be igneous sills possibly originally approaching diorite in composition."

"Precious metals are currently associated with refractory minerals such as telluride (Calaverite, Sylvanite, etc.) and selenium (Naumannite Ag2Se), which are difficult to dissolve through traditional methods, therefore it is necessary to perform a pretreatment (oxidative or roasting) preceding the process of leaching by cyanidation. In this preliminary work the aim was to study the use of solvent extraction to remove tellurium and selenium ions from a synthetic cyanidation effluent, with the purpose of recycling the cyanide back to the process. For the extraction of these anions, TeO32- and SeO42-, tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride (Quatarmina TPR) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (Amine F) were studied as extractants, using nonylphenol as a modifier in the organic phase (trimethylpentane). The results show that it is possible to recover 82% of selenium and 10% of tellurium from synthetic solutions containing either 20 mg/L Se or 20 mg/L of Te, respectively The Se or Te mole ratio to cyanide was 1:4.INTRODUCTION In relation to extraction of precious metals, the cyanidation process has been in use for over a century and despite environmental and toxicological problems it remains the most widely used and economical process available. In the late 90s, there were great efforts to recover gold and silver from refractory ores, which is difficult to do by simple cyanidation. To improve gold recovery from tellurides and selenides that occurs in some new mines, the ores are pretreated by roasting. This is one of the most effective ways of rendering refractory gold ores leachable as well as being a fast pretreatment process compared with bio-oxidation or pressure leaching (Aylmore, 2001). The most important tellurides minerals are Calaverite (AuTe2) and, Silvanite (Au, Ag)2Te4). In the case of selenides, minerals include Naumannite (Ag2Se) and Aguilarite (Ag4SeS) (Ostroumov et al., 1989). Examples of deposits containing telluride include La Bambolla Mine (Sonora, Mexico), Cripple Greek (Colorado, USA), and Kalgoorlie (Western Australia) (Aguayo et al., 1996). The main purpose of this work was to explore the feasibility of using quaternary ammonium salts such as: tallow trimethyl ammonium chloride (Quatarmina TPR) and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (amine F) to extract tellurium and selenium anions from aqueous synthetic cyanidation effluents, so that the cyanide solution could be recycled back to leaching process. The tests were performed on synthetic solutions similar to those found in a mine: 20 mg/L Te as TeO32-, 20 mg/L Se as SeO42- and mole ratio to cyanide was 1:4. using an alkaline medium with pH ranging from 8 to 12. The pioneer work on pressure hydrometallurgy was conducted in Russia at the end of the nineteenth, and the beginning of the twentieth centuries, by Karl Josef Bayer (1847-1904) and Vladimir Nikolyevitch Ipatieff (1867-1952), both working independently in Saint Petersburg. Bayer was studying pressure leaching while Ipatieff was studying the precipitation of metals and their compounds by hydrogen under pressure. Gradually, industrial applications took place first in the aluminium and later in the nickel industry. Today, the technology is well established in a large number of industries, such as uranium, gold, zinc, titanium, tungsten, and more recently copper.

Falcon centrifugal gravity separation tests were conducted to study desulfurization and de-ashing performance with different size fractions of a high-sulfur Chinese -0.5mm fine coal in a dense medium. Performance indicators such as combustible recovery, ash and sulfur rejection, and desulfurization efficiency were used to evaluate the separation efficiency. The results show that for -0.5 mm coal particles, all performance indicators except ash rejection are higher for the Falcon concentrator than for flotation. More specifically, for the +0.125 mm size fraction, Falcon centrifugal separation produced better ash and sulfur rejection performance than froth flotation. However, the Falcon concentrator also showed higher combustible recovery but lower ash and sulfur rejection than froth flotation for the -0.125 mm size fraction.

While the concepts of Aboriginal title share a similar jurisprudence in both Australia and Canada resource development regimes on Aboriginal title lands differ significantly. In Australia, the process is the right to negotiate with mining proponents. In Canada, the process is the duty to consult with government regarding mining projects. This paper compares and assesses the processes for ?consultation and negotiation? with Indigenous peoples when development actions (particularly in the context of mining resource development) impact Indigenous property rights and how agreement making can be progressed. This paper will question whether the resource development processes afford Indigenous people?s property rights full respect when mining developments on Indigenous lands are proposed.

Rock mechanics engineers must provide ground support designs that ensure a safe underground working environment. Unexpected falls of ground are unacceptable while ground support systems must be adequate. Ground support must be economic for the area supported and the time frame the opening is in use. While numerical modeling can be used for ground support design, empirical models are still the common useful design tools. Empirical models are best developed and improved from local experiences although some models, such as Stability Graph (Potvin et al, 1992), are in extensive use by the Canadian mining industry. To determine the adequacy of ground support practices at HBMS, a database of 50 fall of ground case histories between 1985 and 2001 was compiled. For each failure, the recorded data included: location, rock type, rock mass conditions, opening and failure geometry, installed ground support and failure mechanism. An analysis of the database was done to obtain an understanding of failure frequency association with rock types, stope geometry and installed ground support, and to assess what support design changes were necessary. The paper describes changes made to ground support and mining practices during the last five years, and the formation of new ground support standards and practices which have been successful in reducing ground falls while providing improved, efficient and economical ground support.

The solvent extraction properties exhibited by some /V,N'-tetrasubstituted malonamides to efficiently and selectively recover iron(III) from concentrated chloride leaching solutions can be found in the recent literature. The iron(III) extractive chemistry exhibited by some of these derivatives is revisited, in order to compare their chemistry with that shown by a few of the new malonamide compounds. The generally good extraction efficiency towards Fe(III), from >4 M hydrochloric acid solutions, and the relative ease of Fe(III) stripping by distilled water are remarkable findings that are confirmed for the malonamide derivatives described in this work. Furthermore, additional data regarding their selectivity towards Fe(III) extraction over several base metal ions and their behavior when subjected to successive Fe(III) extraction-stripping tests are also presented and discussed.

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed.
