The excavator selection process is quite complex due to the large number of influencing factors, many of these are variable and difficult to accurately define. The majority of mining companies prepare a tender of general specifications and suppliers will then match a product to those specifications. The mining company will then evaluate the tenders on the basis of the best available deal. In this paper, the importance of open pit excavator selection in terms of its impact on operating costs is analysed and discussed. A rigorous process for selection is then outlined.

The present value of the future profits of a mining operation, using a discount factor which represents the effective cost of venture capital, provides a measure of the projected success of the operation. The present value can be maximised by appropriate selection of cut-off grades successively through the life of the operation. A case study is presented in which detailed optimisation of cut-off grade results in a worthwhile increase in profitability compared with the use of a constant, break even, cut-off grade.Some implications of this approach to profit optimisation are discussed.

A report is given of the problems of finance and physical resources that currently affect The University of New South Wales, and of some of the measures adopted to alleviate them. Partly as' a result of review procedures, a School of Mines was formed to amalgamate Applied Geology and Mining Engineering, and to add the skills of extractive metallurgy to produce a group to match the needs of the minerals industry. A review of courses within the School indicated a need for enhanced computer teaching, which is partially negated by a lack of resources. It also shows an overcrowded course whose structure could possibly benefit from a split into managerial and specialist streams.

Management at all levels continually strive to optimise, or make the most of resources available to them. Daily, decisions are being made on how to most efficiently locate and exploit an ore body, then process and market the recovered metal. At one level this optimisation process in the Australian mining industry appears to be successful, for example, witness the improvement in productivity and reduction in operating costs through the 1980s. Yet, at another level the industry's performance has been appreciably below expectations as measured by rate of return criteria. Companies likely to exhibit superior performance are those that are able to co-ordinate, through good planning, the optimisation process at all levels of the organisation. It is argued that any process should be fair, cost effective and efficient, involve all affected parties, and should identify important issues at an early stage. With the recent collapse in commodity prices the size and number of resources project has diminished markedly in recent years. Coupled with the disappearance of the "open cheque book approach", this has led to a revival of the lump sum or turn key project. The key features of this mode of development are compared with the "owner managed" and "reimbursable cost plus fee" alternatives - with respect to schedule, cost and quality control. Key facts for the successful implem- entation of this mode of development are identified. However, the approach is not advocated for all projects and the potential shortfalls are also identified.

Does coal mining get enough out of its people?. In a number of cases, Yes. Several companies have rethought their management systems and accordingly are improving their utilisation of people to improve productivity. For some, capital and technology are the panacea for improved productivity and lower costs. Computerised mine planning, improved beneficiation processes, heftier longwall equipment, bigger trucks and shovels and upgraded coal clearance systems are expected to provide the answers.Whilst these factors are important they only contribute to part of the productive potential of a mining operation. Production flexibility provided by recent Industry award changes has brought about increases in total output. However, these improvements have not been matched by corresponding decreases in the unit cost of production.

Today, the selection of a mining method is a multi-criteria decisionmaking process, with many factors in this process connected to each other. These trends do not have a high degree of confidence. In this study the analytical hierarchy process was used to select the suitable mining method for anomaly No 3 of Gol-Gohar iron mine of Iran. The results of this study show that gathering all existing information from the exploration stages and using AHP technique, the open pit mining method is the mining method for this anomaly.

In September 1980 the N.S.W. Environ- mental Planning and Assessment Act was gazetted. This legislation created a new arena of government involvement in the procedure for obtaining approval to open a new mine, or expand an existing mine in N.S.W. Since 1980 the legislation relating to environmental protection requirements, the procedure for obtaining Development Consent and the nature of relevant government policies have caused considerable confusion on the part of many potential developers. Implementation of the legislation has now become systematic and relatively predictable. However, certain aspects can be improved and require urgent government action.

Deformation of the lithosphere by tectonic forces is investigated from both observational and theoretical standpoints. Global and regional geophysical data bases, coupled with the means for their rapid display and analysis, facilitate recognition of areas of the con- tinents and oceans where the response of the lithosphere to these deforming processes might fruitfully be studied. Gravity anomalies, from Seasat altimeter data and from land and shipboard measurements, provide critical infor- mation on the isostatic state of deformed lithosphere and therefore on its thermal and mechanical properties.

During the period May to July 2003, East Mine overcored and recovered from goaf edges a total of 55 1.8 metre CVX grade bolts to analyse installation quality. Some 95 per cent of the pneumatically (hand-held Gophers) installed bolts show gloving, with 75 per cent showing gloving of at least one-third of the effective bolt length. Hydraulically installed (continuous miner-mounted bolting rigs) bolts show in some areas less gloving but do have significant unencapsulation lengths. Trials of newly developed bolt end profiles show considerable improvements in eliminating gloving but do show variable and unacceptable variations of unencapsulation.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. The eastern part of the Yangtze craton (eastern China ) is marked by a number of medium to small size porphyry Cu-(Au-Mo) deposits. A detailed geochronological study and existing data suggest that these deposits were emplaced in the 144 - 136 Ma interval. They are spatially and temporally related to voluminous mafic and alkaline magmatic rocks ranging in composition from gabbros, syenites, A-type granites and their volcanic counterparts. This indicates that the porphyry Cu-(Au-Mo) deposits in the eastern Yangtze craton were generated in an intra-craton extensional tectonic setting, which is distinctly different from the compressive environment of oceanic or continental arcs of the Pacific Rim where numerous giant porphyry Cu deposits were formed. A stibnite flotation concentrate from Costerfield in Victoria was found to contain 63.3 g/t An while its sizing distribution indicated that 81.6 per cent of the material was less than 38 ¦m. A 24 hour cyanidation test by a standard bottle roll method recovered 15 per cent of this gold. Pressure cyanidation under conditions of ambient temperature, 40 per cent pulp density, an oxygen pressure of 1000 - 2000 kPa and an initial NaCN concentration of 15 kg/t, resulted in a recovery of 65 pe cent of the gold after only two hours of leaching. Aqueous pressure preoxidation of the concentrate followed by the standard bottle roll cyanidation realised gold recoveries as high as 96 per cent.
