THE object of this note is to set forth some particulars of the effect of light on cinnabar occurring in a deposit of this mineral at Puhipubi, in the North Auckland peninsula of New Zealand. This deposit is contained within a gently-inclined sheet of siliceous sinter forminga hillock called Mount Mitchell, and is particularly notable in that it is an instance of the simultaneous deposition of cinnabar and silica on a large scale. The mercury-bearing material varies in character from semi-porous sinter to dense translucent cbalcedony, of which the former is stained to various shades of pink, the latter to brilliant reds and vermilion. On exposure to daylight-and particularly to sunlight - these colours change to corresponding shades of translucent bluish-grey. As a direct result of this change the Mount Mitchell deposit remained unknown until some ten years ago, for, while prospectors early discovered cinnabar in the adjacent city and in a neighbouring stream bed, none of them recognized this mineral in the bluish chalcedony strewing portions of the surface of the Mount. The writer has carried out a series of experiments designed to indicate the cause and nature of this change, and to form a basis for the elaboration of more delicate experiments which would yield positive information. Circumstances, however, have so far combined to prevent the continuation of the research, and, as there seems little prospect of the writer being able to do more work on the subject, it seems well to publish the data so far obtained. Prior to describing this colour change, the writer would point out the desirability of restricting the meaning of the term cinnabar to the naturally occurring red sulphide of mercury; this would eliminate the ambiguities which arise from its indiscriminate application, in chemical literature, to both natural and artificial sulphides. Further the term cinnabarite having long since fallen into disuse, there appears to be no good reason for retaining the companionterm "metacinnabarite" when reduction to "metacinnabar" would preserve the meaning in a less clumsy word.

The Resources Boom of the 1960s in Australia provided a strong foundation for AustraliaÆs economic prosperity for the remainder of the twentieth century. In combination with sound economic management, our world-class minerals and energy sector has played a key role in the nationÆs competitiveness, and it has been the major source of our exports since the early 1970s. Even with the emergence since 1990 of major mineral provinces in Latin America and elsewhere, Australia has increased its percentage of world production of several minerals. Between 1990 and 2002, our share of iron ore production rose from 13 per cent to 20 per cent, nickel mine production from eight per cent to 17 per cent, copper mine production from four per cent to seven per cent and zinc mine production from 13 per cent to 17 per cent. Whether this situation will continue during the coming decades motivates the discussion of this reflective paper. The approach is to consider fundamental supply-side and demand-side issues in arriving at a view about the state of the world, the world minerals sector and the Australian resources sector in the coming decades. The argument draws from the experiences of other mature mineral producing countries such as Canada and the United States. In such nations, efficient producers have often sustained competitiveness for extended periods, despite falling grades and other challenging operating conditions. Yet several forces are changing the economic geography of the minerals industry in significant ways. These include the re-emergence of major global mining corporations, the revision of mineral policy in over 100 nations since 1985, the mobility of technology and more efficient transport both for mineral productions and mining professionals. Given these trends the paper argues that the Australian mining industry must continue to change and evolve significantly in the foreseeable future. Its leaders will need to be even more internationally focused if it is to maintain its strong competitive position.

The Closure Risk model was developed as a new tool to aid decision makers in the complex area of mine closure. It uses a simple analytical technique that allows the decision maker to simplify what is often a complex mine closure process into more easily managed sub components. This systematic approach ensures that critical factors in the closure process are not overlooked. It also allows the most important issues to be highlighted. The model can also be used to produce quantitative estimates of risk by weighting and prioritising the issues to produce the Closure Risk Factor (CRF). Field trials at several mine sites in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2001 tested the model. The trials confirmed that the model has significant potential as a tool for decision-makers to assess in a structured, systematic manner, the major closure risks at individual mine sites. The risks include not only environmental impacts but safety and health, community, legal, financial, technical and other issues. The trials confirmed the value of a team-based approach and the inputs of key staff including environmental, production, mine planning, and community liaison personnel as well as mine management. Although the usefulness of the qualitative component of the model was established, it was found that, due to the influence of subjectivity, the utility of the prototype model to determine quantitative risk was of limited value. Using a continuous improvement approach, improvements to the model were sought. A refined model, incorporating the Australian Standard 4360 definition of risk and facilitated in-house risk assessment sessions was developed and tested against the data obtained in the field trial. This model, while maintaining the qualitative strengths of the original, allows more accurate absolute and relative quantitative scores to be calculated. This in turn facilitates comparisons between the issues at a single site as well as between different mines.

The conventional method of transporting mine tailings from a process plant to a tailings storage facility (TSF) is in the form of a low to medium density1 slurry, which can be pumped using centrifugal pumps. Over the past several decades, therefore, mine operators have generally adopted this default approach. There are, however, some convincing arguments why consideration should be given to thickening the tailings slurry to a higher density paste consistency. In particular, the minimisation of environmental impacts, the reduction in water consumption and the cost savings relating to TSF closure make paste an attractive option for the life of mine tailings disposal. There are several environmental impacts that are associated with a conventional slurry TSF, such as land sterilisation, aesthetics, dust, seepage and acid mine drainage. Some of these impacts, such as dusting, may be difficult to mitigate while the TSF is in operation. Others can be influenced by adjustments made to the tailings slurry density at the plant. Unplanned fluctuations in slurry density and/or viscosity can have a significant influence on TSF performance and can exacerbate the environmental impacts relating to the facility. Relatively minor changes in the solids content of the slurry can affect tailings beaching behaviour, degree of segregation, position of the phreatic surface, amount of freeboard, consolidation behaviour, placed (settled) density (and hence TSF capacity) and in situ strength of the tailings. Paste is a non segregating slurry and many of these effects can be minimised at the TSF when the tailings slurry is thickened to a paste. These improvements are manifested by reduced seepage, flexibility in selecting an appropriate final landform, ability to rehabilitate progressively and reductions in plant water usage. It is possible to minimise environmental impacts of a TSF through the use of tailings paste. Ideally the paste production plant should be part of the initial design of the process plant. However, significant benefits can be gained by adding a paste production plant at some time later in the operational life of the mine to reduce environmental impacts and facilitate an environmentally acceptable TSF closure.

It is a commonplace of our industry that prices of most minerals have been historically weak during the 1980s. The International Monetary Fund's index of prices of metals fell 25 per cent between 1980 and 1982, rose slightly in 1983, and has since fallen further. In December last year it was 37 per cent below its 1980 average. The few temporary exceptions to the mineral industry's malaise highlight the excess capacity, which largely explains the weakness of prices. The industry has painfully come to recognise that more satisfactory prices will not be restored until supply capability and demand move back into better balance. Mine capacity was installed in the expectation of much faster growth of demand than has occurred. For a variety of reasons mine and plant closures have been insufficient to restore equilibrium to the market-place. The industry may, therefore, have to resign itself to continued weak prices for some years more, at least by the yardstick of the 1970s. Growth rates of demand have slackened off in line with economic activity, and in response to continuing substitution and technological improvements. To the extent that the recent weakness of oil prices stimulates the industrial countries' activity, demand for non-fuel minerals may grow faster than most forecasters now predict. It is, however, much too early to say how long the weaker oil prices will persist, and even more difficult to estimate their probable effects. In typical post-war business cycles the usual response to recession was to batten down the hatches, and ride out the storm. Sooner or later, and probably sooner, demand resumed its previous trend path, and prices recovered. The market, in effect, bailed mines out of trouble; the more efficient could make attractive pre-tax profits whilst even the poor to mediocre could earn a satisfactory living. Prices rose at least as fast as general inflation, and in the early 1970s much faster. In retrospect those price rises of the early 1970s were historically abnormal but they did not appear so in the prevailing inflationary climate of the time. When the market failed in the early 1980s many of the hardest hit companies looked for scapegoats.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. Mesothermal lode-gold deposits often pose problems during sampling because of their complex and erratic gold grade distribution, and the presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation protocols must form the basis of any resource estimate at whatever stage a project is at. Design of a sampling regime must be based upon a thorough understanding of orebody mineralogy and geology. This should include consideration of gold particle size and distribution. The sample type, size and density employed must also be based on the underlying geology of the deposit. Choice of sample preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if fundamental sampling error and analytical errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, consistently understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and bulk leach extractable gold assay. The proportion of coarse gold within samples will have a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assay method. The application of Gy sampling theory can help to reduce errors within the processing of samples of broken rock. Quality control/assurance of sampling regimes must also be critically assessed. The problems associated with sampling mesothermal lode-gold type deposits are presented as case studies from Western Australia and North America.

A mineral systems approach was used to interpret precompetitive airborne mineral mapping geoscience data for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) exploration in the Starra area, Eastern Succession, Mount Isa Inlier. Selected minerals were chosen to map possible source rocks/fluids as well as intersecting structural/fluid pathways that could have transported mineralising fluids into domains of contrasting rocks/fluids where there was potential for physicochemical gradients to precipitate metals. Ferric and ferrous iron contents and white mica abundance were useful mineral criteria to identify theMount Dore Granite of theWilliams-Naraku Batholith as a potential source of æoxidisedÆ fluids rich in Fe, K and potentially Cu-Au. The Mount Dore Shear Zone (MDSZ) intersects the western margin of this granite with the highest contents and changes in composition of the white mica are peripheral to this contact within the granite. This together, with the fact that the entire N-S length of the MDSZ in the study area (~16 km) is abundant in white mica are evidence of K-rich fluids had preferentially moved along this pathway. To the south, the MDSZ intersects a domain comprising massive ironstone bodies as well as numerous graphitic horizons. This interpreted æreducedÆ domain is well mapped using the æopaqueÆ mineral products, as well as by white mica, which is pervasively developed and extends 2 km either side of the MDSZ fault into the meta-sedimentary sequences. The chemistry of this white mica also changes progressively away from the MDSZ, becoming more Si-rich (longer wavelength) towards the contact with massive ironstone bodies in the west and the graphitic units in the east, both of which represent sites of known Cu-Au mineralisation. Beyond these contact zones of interpreted æoxidised fluidsÆ with reduced rocks/fluids, there is either a rapid change to Si-poor white mica and/or no white mica developed, ie major æchemicalÆ gradient change. These mineral mapping results provide evidence for a direct link between possible source rocks and sites of IOCG metal deposition as well as extending the associated alteration zonation which had previously been mapped/published at the metre-scale to the kilometre-scale. Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. For many years explosive sensitized explosives were assessed using the ballistic mortar. The standard test used lOg of explo- sive initiated with a detonator. Over the past 30 years many non- explosive sensitized explosives and blasting agents have been developed. Most of these new explosives and blasting agents cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar as they are not initiated by a detonator. It is also known that all explosives have a criti- cal diameter. When the cartridge diameter is less than the criti- cal diameter a stable detonation cannot be produced and the explosive fails to propagate. For many blasting agents the criti- cal diameters are greater than 50mm and such large diameters cannot be tested in the ballistic mortar. The underwater test allows explosives to be tested in diameters greater than the critical diameter and to be adequately initiated with suitable boosters. The effects of the explosive on the water are easy to measure and the test provides a safe, convenient and reproducible means of assessing explosive performance. The reaction products are allowed to expand to a low final pressure. The underwater test can therefore be used to give a measure of the total expansion work of explosives. The detonation of an explosive induces a shock wave in the surrounding water. The profile of the shock wave can be meas- ured 3-6m from the charge and the energy in the shock wave cal- culated. Measurements over a range of distances show that the shock wave is attenuated as it travels through the water and the attenuation is different for each explosive. This makes it difficult to estimate the energy dissipated in the water between the charge and a single gauge. The reaction products continue to expand and displace water. The bubble continues to expand until the kinetic energy of the water is zero. The gas pressure in the bubble is now lower than the hydrostatic pressure and the bubble radius is a maximum. The higher external hyrdostatic pressure causes the bubble to implode. The bubble energy is the work done displacing the maxi- mum bubble volume against the hydrostatic pressure and can befound from the bubble period. It is not always easy to find a large enough pond for the bubble to expand undisturbed by the water surface and the containing boundaries. This makes it difficult to determine the bubble energy accurately in shallow Ponds.

Why is it so difficult? Why are there differences throughout the resources industry in how reconciliation factors are reported and calculated? Why is there no standard formula to use? These are common questions asked when mining companies try to compare reconciliation results across operations or attempt to undertake internal or corporate governance reporting processes. For many mining companies the calculation of reconciliation factors is often a very time and resource intensive part of mandatory reconciliation reporting. Some major mining companies, that move millions of tonnes of material per annum, dedicate full time resources to the calculation of reconciliation factors. The willingness of these companies to set aside resources demonstrates the value that operations place on good reconciliation reporting. Reconciliation is about measuring the variance between two like measures at different points along the mining sequence. It can be undertaken between predictive models, forecast plans and actual measured performance. Calculations are used to derive a variance between two sections within the mining sequence, with the result being commonly known in the resources industry as a æfactorÆ. Mining companies use the calculation of reconciliation factors as key performance indices (KPIs) to provide a æhealth checkÆ of their operation, with variances often pointing to issues either with the accuracy of the original estimate or the quality of the measurement being used in the comparison. There are many reconciliation factors that can be calculated and reported. This paper will set out, clarify and provide a recommended standard means of calculating each specific factor that, where adopted by a company, will ensure compliance with the international reporting codes, such as JORC. Using case studies from Rio Tinto Group (Rio Tinto) and BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (æBMAÆ), and the authors experience across a wide range of mine sites, the outline of a generic solution for tracking a parcel of material from the pit through to the port along with appropriate reconciliation factors is provided. The intention of proposing standardised reconciliation factor terminology and methodology is to provide the foundations of a system to enable communication and comparison across different commodities, companies and mines sites.

Three transient phenomena have been observed and experienced in the operation of large solvent extraction mixer-settlers. These relate to the ability of the settler to discharge streams with low entrainments arising from different phase separation æproblemsÆ. The operation of large-scale laboratory and commercial solvent extraction settlers has been shown by a number of workers to be a dynamic process, especially at the feed end. Circulating flow patterns are common in all three organic, aqueous and emulsion phases. The circulating patterns in deep dispersion bands in long settlers are believed to form roll fronts that can travel down the settler length within the bounds of the dispersion band. Various physical models are proposed to illustrate the formation and movement of roll fronts within the dispersion band. Another transient phenomenon has been observed in commercial settlers operating without any dispersion band. Entrainment of the continuous phase in the advancing dispersed phase is at high and erratic levels. This supports the conventional separation model, which recommends the presence of a significant depth of dispersion band to æfilterÆ the secondary haze from the bulk separated phases. The third transient is the position and shape of the dispersion band within the settler. Large commercial settlers have been shown to exhibit high variability in both these aspects of the dispersion band. The elimination of all three transient phenomena in commercial settlers has been shown to be effective with an in-settler media of coarse size and moderate specific surface area. The effect of the media is two-fold: it dissipates both the circulating flows and the forward velocity of any roll fronts, and creates a stable deep dispersion band at the feed end that serves to trap secondary haze from the primary coalescence process. It is effective in treating both types of transients involving non-existent or excessive dispersion band depths. The media serves to enhance coalescence by providing a static surface of intermediate surface tension on which droplets can collapse. The random nature of the media also provides multiple stream splitting and re-combination, that presents further drop to drop and drop to media impingement, which in turn promotes coalescence.

The Kalahari Manganese Deposit in South Africa accounts for 80 per cent of the worldÆs land-based mineable Mn reserves. Although the ores are primarily mined for export, South Africa is the worldÆs third largest producer of ferromanganese and ferrosilicomanganese alloy, both of which are derived from the smelting of these ores. Mineralogical analysis has traditionally been forsaken for bulk chemical assaying in quality control of smelter feeds, principally because quantitative data could not be easily produced. Yet, mineralogy plays a vital role in determining smelting behaviour, which in turn has economic implications when aspects such as energy and reductant consumption are considered. Smelting is an endothermic process, and the amount of energy input required is dependent on the minerals present in the ore, as well as their relative proportions. Further, knowing the bulk Mn oxidation state in the ores allows for calculation of the amount of oxygen that must be driven off to produce alloy, and hence the amount of reductant required. Additionally, certain minerals can be correlated with potentially deleterious elements, so that ore mineralogy can indicate penalty element distribution. Mineral abundance analysis was conducted on ores from the Kalahari Manganese Deposit using quantitative X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement using a fundamental parameters approach was applied to micronised ore samples. The mineral percentages obtained were validated using mineral chemical data together with bulk major element data derived from ICP-OES. Bulk oxidation state partitioning was then carried out knowing the Mn valence in the minerals. The results show potential for implementation of the proposed method on a smelting plant, where ore blending could be then implemented to achieve consistent feed compositions to smelters. Selective mining could also be undertaken to obtain desirable ore compositions for domestic or international markets.

The Australian Water Balance Model (AWBM) has found widespread use in Australia in estimating the streamflow behaviour of catchments. It has been used at the Ridgeway Gold Mine, in central west New South Wales, to estimate streamflows in creeks potentially affected by loss of spring-fed baseflow due to mine dewatering. The AWBM estimates are used to assess the effect of mining on streamflows and the need to provide compensatory flow releases, which would be drawn from mine water supplies, into the creeks, in compliance with regulatory consent requirements. The monitored flows in some of the creeks exhibit non-typical behaviour, with streamflows increasing in autumn months despite a lack of significant rainfall. This behaviour is believed to be due to the combined effects of discharge from rock fractures and the effects of evapotranspiration in the riparian zone. A modified version of the AWBM has been developed which much more closely simulates the observed flow behaviour and which will be used in ongoing flow assessments for the mine. This paper outlines the difficulties involved in modelling low flows in small catchments that are subject to a number of influences (other than mining), describes the development of a refined model to improve simulation of low flows and baseflow in small headwater catchments and highlights the need for good baseline data to calibrate such models.

The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

The Red Lake mine is one of the richest gold mines in the world. The primary mining methods are overhand and underhand cut and fill. Starting in 2003, Goldcorp initiated an expansion program at the mine. The expansion includes a new 6.55 m diameter hoisting shaft currently under construction. The shaft will be driven to a length of over 2180 m. The shaft will be used as a primary ventilation intake to the mine. In addition to the new hoisting shaft, a return air raise is being driven approximately 1690 m from surface. This raise will be a parallel return to the existing mine infrastructure. This paper describes the ventilation and climatic analyses performed in support of the expansion project. The study included a full mine ventilation survey, in situ rock mass measurements, analysing options related to mine layout, airway sizing calculations, air heating options, and climatic simulations. Specifications were prepared for an air heating system and main and booster fans. Analyses were also performed related to heat in the stoping areas namely caused by auxiliary fans and backfill with high cement content.

Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

This paper describes modelling studies of the flotation cells used by BHP Billiton Nickel West Ltd in the slimes circuit at Mt Keith. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the hydrodynamic limitations in the existing cells to improve nickel recovery. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed on the 100 m3 mechanically-stirred cells. The data produced by the simulations include velocity vectors, gas holdup distribution, solids distribution, bubble size, superficial gas velocity and turbulent parameters. These results have been checked and found to match hydrodynamic measurements at the plant. An analysis of the data found that one of the limitations in fine particle recovery was related to the air bubbles discharged with the tailing. The air in the discharge was caused by the high viscosity of the pulp. In the presence of fine particles, the pulp exhibits high viscosity with a yield stress. The increased drag due to high viscosity caused the bubbles to rise more slowly up the cell. This results in a significant hold-up of bubbles, some of which report to the tailing with associated loss of valuable minerals. A parametric CFD study of the operating variables shows that less air would be discharged in the tailing by decreasing the following: air flow rate,pulp density,stirring speed, andfrother addition. Simulation results indicate that these changes would cause a lowering of the air hold up in the cell especially near the discharge area. Predictions of the bubble-particle attachment rates under various operating conditions have also been calculated. Although it is possible to increase attachment rates by increasing stirring speed or by increasing pulp density, the amount of air discharged and the amount of nickel loss through the tailing will also increase. The project showed that CFD modelling is a powerful tool for studying hydrodynamic effects of bubble-particle interactions in flotation cells.

"A personal account of my journey from a student from suburban Melbourne in the 1970s through 40 odd years in and around the mining industry including the important events that have moulded my thinking and, as result, have formed the guiding principles of the mining contracting business and related entities that make up the Byrnecut Group. On reflection the game of chance has played a big part in the journey, from the selection of initial study based on my parents financial capability and the one and only offer of early employment by Western Mining Corporation where the formative phase of my career took place in what was the vibrant can do environment that existed in Kambalda in the 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequently the unplanned meeting with Frank Lubbock drawing me back to Kalgoorlie from Fiji in 1987 and the resultant formation of a private mining contracting business, the excitement of the mid 1980s Kalgoorlie mining environment followed by the turmoil of the 1987 stock market crash where business survival was the game, resulting in a relationship with the German based Thyssen Group.Thereafter the development of a large privately owned international multifaceted mining services group and the principles behind that growth. These include: development of strategic personnel and retention of those personnel cashflow management and debt within a private company scenario recognising opportunity for synergetic growth but insisting on market forces driving those business elements, as opposed to internal divisions group-wide sustainable business systems, particularly in relation to leading safety and training processes innovation and renewal to provide the elusive advantage in a competitive market the role of entrepreneurial small businesses in development of technology.The above principles combine to make a margin in a cut throat contracting environment, competing on the world stage against other contractors and owner mining options.CITATION:Coughlan, S, 2014. The Australian Magnesium Corporation Limited (AMC) is constructing the worldÆs largest magnesium metal plant at Stanwell, 24 km west of Rockhampton in Central Queensland. The $1.3 billion, 97 000 tonne per year plant is scheduled to commence production in mid-2004. It will produce magnesium from magnesite using the innovative, locally developed AM Process Technology which enables magnesium to be produced at internationally competitive costs. The technology will enable the plant to have the lowest environmental impact of all the available magnesium production processes. The project will meet current world-best-practice environmental and emission standards while on a life cycle analysis, magnesium produced by the Stanwell plant will result in net reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. Magnesium is the lightest of the structural metals. Its high strength to weight ratio and ease of casting and machinability makes it particularly suitable for the manufacture of light weight automotive components. Reducing the weight of motor vehicles through the use of light weight materials such as magnesium is the current primary means adopted by the automobile manufacturing industry to improve motor vehicle fuel efficiency and the lowering of emissions of greenhouse gases. The Australian Magnesium or AM process has been developed over the past decade by AMC in conjunction with the CSIRO to produce magnesium from magnesite mined at AMCÆs Kunwarara deposit. Over $200 million has been spent developing the AM process, designing, building and operating a demonstration plant at Gladstone and to complete an environmental impact statement and receive environmental approvals as well as funding for the commercial Stanwell Project. The paper outlines the development of the AM process technology, the operations of the Gladstone demonstration plant confirming the process technology, its operating costs and environmental performance. The paper covers the particular attention that was given to minimising the production of CHCÆs, the development of new cover gases for molten magnesium, the minimising of emissions of greenhouse gases and the life cycle analysis of magnesium as a replacement for steel and heavier metals in motor vehicles which confirmed its use resulted in a net reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. The project received both Commonwealth and Queensland Government environmental approvals by August 2000.
