It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

The ever increasing number of vehicles is leading to slow-moving and even stationary traffic sitting longer in traffic jams over extensive city areas. This traffic situation causes a sharp increase in pollutant emissions from vehicles, and high levels of pollution usually result throughout the built-up area. Reducing the pollution level by using traffic routing measures to speed up the flow of traffic in the existing street network is only possible in exceptional cases.In many cases the only option for achieving a significant improvement in traffic conditions is to shift the traffic underground using a road tunnel or underpass. Such tunnel routes suck off the traffic from large sections of the city, thereby easing the overall traffic flow. Thus on the one hand it produces a sharp reduction in pollution levels in the area of the tunnel route, but on the other hand it can result in locally increased exhaust pollution levels from longer tunnel systems that require mechanical ventilation. The air extracted by the ventilation system is blown out into the atmosphere either directly through the tunnel portal, or via a venting tower. Pollution can therefore occur in the area surrounding such exhaust air outlets.Thus if a tunnel is planned in a city, then closer investigation is required of both aspects: the reduction in pollution in the area of the tunnel route thanks to relocating the traffic and easing congestion, and the increased short-range pollution around the tunnel portals (shafts).

The methods used and some of the results obtained from a major geotechnical study of the Ok Tedi mine area, Papua New Guinea, are described. The study was carried out at both regional and local scales and extended over a two-year period. A team of individual engineers and scientists from a variety of disciplines carried out the work. This study may provide a model for other investigations in similar environments.

Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coals in the Greymouth, Ohai and Kaitangata coalfields represent a major national energy resource comprising-up to 2500 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. The three coalfields are closely related in terms of age and sedimentary and structural character. The most striking feature common to all is the complexity of the geology which has severely restricted exploration and mining of these coal resources. This complexity is manifest in the irregular lensoid nature of coal seams and by the incidence of unpredictable medium and small scale faulting and folding. There are many geological similarities between these coalfields which are considered to arise from a common origin which can be related to the plate tectonic evolution of the southwest Pacific region. In order to efficiently assess and exploit these coal resources it will be necessary to know their geology in great detail. This can he achieved by increasing the understanding of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the coal bearing basins. This knowledge may be gained by the application of traditional (ie drilling, field mapping) and innovative techniques (ie high resolution seismic, in seam seismic) with on going research-oriented studies (ie basin analysis, coal petrography).

The steel industry is one of the global leading CO2 emitters, accounting for approximately 7 per cent of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. In 2022, the world produced 1878.5 Mt of crude steel. About 70.8 per cent of the world’s crude steel was produced by integrated steel mills through the blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) process, while the remainder was produced largely by mini mills using electrical arc furnaces (EAF). Compared with gas-based DRI and scrap-based EAF processes, the direct CO2 emissions from the BF-BOF process and the coal based DRI and EAF process are significantly more, as both the processes rely heavily on fossil fuels, such as coke and pulverised coal, to provide energy and reduce iron oxides. Hydrogen is very reactive and reduces iron oxides to metallic iron without generating CO2. Therefore, substitution of hydrogen for fossil fuels in these processes presents a good opportunity to significantly decarbonise the steel industry. This paper will first discuss the thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of hydrogen and carbothermic reductions of iron oxides and then examine the behaviours of different ore types present in Australia iron ores during hydrogen reduction.

Variations in many aspects of physical and chemical grade are often of concern to mining operations and mineral processing plants. In most circumstances these amounts of variation are predictable. At the time of planning new operations, we should be able to predict the amount of sampling and testing variation which our sampling devices, laboratory procedures and on-stream analysis devices will achieve. We should know how well our stockpiles, reclaimers and bins will homogenise material (or whether segregation will actually increase the amount of variation). We should be able to predict the amounts of variation that will occur on the important time or tonnage scales at the crucial p oints in our proposed operation. And once these amounts of variation are reliably known, mine planning will seem a little bit more like dealing with known knowns rather than like dealing with unknown unknowns.The first step towards quantifying amounts of variation for planned operations is to assess amounts of variation for existing operations. How many operations have estimates of amounts of variation in their databases? How often are people able to partition amounts of variation into amounts due to sampling error, amounts due to sample preparation, amounts due to assaying, and the amount of real variation in the stream of material?CITATION:Robinson, G K, 2012. PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of New Orleans-based Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold of New Orleans, operates a large mining complex on the Western half of the Island of New Guinea in Tembagapura, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The IOZ (Intermediate Ore Zone) mine, one of the underground orebodies, is mined by block caving. The area affected by the cave collects a large quantity of rain and ground waters mixing with fine rock particles. The mixture, commonly called æwet muckÆ, sometimes spills into drawpoints and makes the working environment hazardous to the loader operators. Wet muck is observed in an increasing number of drawpoints in the IOZ mine and remote LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) technology has been implemented to handle the ore. The driving force for this automation project has been the safety of the loader operators. The system has been developed mainly in-house and incorporates state-of-the-art features. Up to eight remote loaders and nine rock breakers are controlled from an underground control room located approximately 400 metres from the active extraction panels. The two underground crushers and nine conveyor feeders are also operated remotely from an adjacent control room. The development of FreeportÆs remote system has taken time and considerable effort. Not only the success of the IOZ mine was at stake but also the fulfillment of environmental commitments pertaining to the mill tailings. Approximately eight per cent of the mill feed must come from underground skarn deposits to neutralise the acid-generating tailings generated by the huge Grasberg open pit ores.

Online monitoring of particles cumulative percent passing (PCPP) for a target size at hydrocyclone overflow, compared with traditional offline methods, provides PCPP feedback in real time, and is advantageous in enabling energy-efficient comminution, increasing downstream flotation efficiency, and improving upstream resource knowledge. However, existing online approaches are generally costly and bespoke, and some are sensitive to operational changes. Therefore, this study proposes a new low-cost alternative based on accelerometer measurement for online PCPP monitoring in the overflow of hydrocyclones and provides a preliminary experimental investigation under dry condition. The proposed method uses a sensing probe inserted into the overflow pipe of a hydrocyclone to receive particle impact from the incoming slurry, with accelerometers attached to the probe and mounting frame outside the pipe for particle-probe impact detection. As a preliminary investigation before studying particle-probe impact events in slurry, tests under dry condition without fluids were conducted using dry sand particles in free fall from a fixed height. Accelerometer measurements are analysed in both time and frequency domains through root-mean-square (RMS) and fast Fourier transform (FFT). Results show that accelerometer measurements are useful in estimating mass flow rates, which are correlated to the accelerometer output amplitude RMS values in time domain, in a non-linear mapping. Different particle size classes can be identified by examining the accelerometer output amplitude at a known mass flow rate. Different particle size classes feature their distinct signature frequencies (SFs) that can be examined via FFT and the SF is found to be independent of the mass flow rate. The results imply that any PCPP changes can be detected by the change in the accelerometer output amplitude as well as a shift in SF, which demonstrates the effectiveness of using accelerometers to gauge changes in PCPP. Based on the current findings in dry condition, future work will investigate particle-probe impact events in slurry.

The South African mining industry first experienced en-masse use of electronic detonators in the Narrow Reef environment using AELÆs ElectrodetÖ pre-set delay system. In recent years, programmable systems such as AELÆs SmartdetÖ have also established their position, and within both AEL and the mines there has been important learning around the strengths and weaknesses of these systems. In general, the fixed delay systems tend to be more easily appreciated by less-skilled work teams, and are very well suited to simple layouts, especially long, narrow blasts. However, development of programmable row controllers and series delay inserts has greatly expanded the field of usefulness of these systems while retaining most of the simplicity of use. The programmable systems are immensely flexible and therefore able to function under any condition, but require a higher level of discipline and knowledge. Much has been done to address this issue and make the systems user friendly, so the systems have converged to some extent. These systems are both valuable tools for achieving control over blasting in underground and surface applications. The choice of system is very dependent on the prevailing conditions. Accurate timing with electronic enhancements continues to show an increasing range of benefits to mining operations. There is a strong parallel with non electronic initiation systems which helps to understand the appropriate use of the systems.

The Tooloom gold field is located within the New England Fold Belt in the far northeast of New South Wales, approximately 130 km south southwest of Brisbane. Gold was first discovered at Tooloom in 1857. Within a few years up to 10 000 people were mining placer gold deposits in the Tooloom valley and a few tried their hand at mining hard rock occurrences as well. Mining of alluvial gold continued in a small way at Tooloom until very recently, but only in the last few years, since Malachite Resources acquired its interest at Tooloom (now 100 per cent), has the full potential of this large, reduced intrusion-related gold field been appreciated. By the mid 1870s, once the alluvials were largely worked out, most of the early miners had made the 270 km trek north to the newly discovered Gympie gold field and Tooloom slipped into obscurity. Such was this obscurity that the Tooloom gold field was not recorded on published Government geological maps until 2001, four years after Malachite became involved. The many hard rock prospects that Malachite has identified in recent years were largely or completely unknown. Tooloom is a good example of blinkered thinking when it comes to modern mineral exploration. The New England province in NSW has long been the æpoor relationÆ to the much better known and more highly favoured Lachlan Fold Belt in NSW. It has also suffered serious neglect compared with the Queensland part of the New England Fold Belt that hosts such major gold deposits as Mt Morgan (>7 Moz), Gympie (>3 Moz) and Cracow (>1 Moz). Tooloom is proof that prospective geology does not stop at state borders.

Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. Globalisation and consolidation is resulting in the mining industry coming to be dominated by a small number of very large companies seeking to lever assets and knowledge to create wealth. As an important service provider to the mining industry, the minerals tertiary education sector needs to understand these global drivers and respond to them. However, it is under-resourced and its sustainability is under challenge in all Western countries. Through the establishment and funding of the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC), the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) has provided a unique opportunity to build a national, world-class minerals tertiary education environment in Australia that can be sustained in the long-term. This paper reviews how the global changes occurring in the mining industry provide the model for what needs to occur in the minerals education sector and how MTEC is the logical vehicle to facilitate these changes. It concludes by suggesting that the time has come to integrate the minerals tertiary education providers into one business. Furthermore, the vision should be for a global mining education academy based around a virtual university capable of servicing the cultural diversity and continuing education needs of the global minerals industry.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) excavation is nowadays more and more considered a valuable alternative to conventional tunnelling. As a matter of fact, thanks to its advantages such as greater rate of advance and safer working conditions, the application of TBMs has increased significantly in recent years. Despite the possible excellent performance of TBMs in favourable ground conditions, the advance rates could be significantly slowed down or even obstructed in limiting geological situations. This obviously traduces in potentially longer tunnel construction times and higher costs and, therefore, in a preference for conventional method. One of the major geological hazards encountered during tunnel construction, is related to the presence of fault zones or heavily jointed and fractured rocks. The most common geotechnical problems resulting from tunnelling in these difficult conditions include the instability of the excavation face, instabilities of side-walls producing large overbreaks on the tunnel profile, excessive deformations in case of squeezing grounds, frequently changing stresses in terms of magnitude and direction, high water inflows, etc. The decisions aids for tunnelling (DAT) is a model and a computer code that can be used to evaluate the influence of the uncertainties related to both the geological/geotechnical conditions and the construction process on final tunnel construction time and costs. In this framework, the DAT is used for assessing the effects that challenging ground conditions may have on tunnelling operations in terms of costs and delays. This is done by simulating the tunnel construction considering several geological profiles. The aim of the study is comparing different excavation methods (ie drill and blast versus TBM) in changing ground conditions along the tunnel alignment ranging from good rock, to very poor and fractured formations. The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach for modelling jointed and veined rock has been at the forefront of caving geomechanics research for years. A well-constructed and calibrated SRM model can capture the full rock behaviour at a macroscopic scale. Traditionally, SRM technology employed bonded particle models (BPM) due to their ability to model rock’s response to loading without prior specification of behaviour. The SRM modelling process requires the BPM to simulate intact rock and the subsequent introduction of fractures or veins by changing bonding characteristics between the particles. However, bonded particle materials have difficulty reproducing both the compressive and tensile strengths of intact rock. This and other limitations of BPM have been the driving force in exploring the potential of grain-based (2D) and bonded block (3D) models (BBM).This paper reports on recent work exploring the applicability of both BPMs and BBMs in 3D to the modelling of intact rock. The advantages and limitations of both BPMs and BBMs are addressed based on the results of numerical simulations using the PFC3D and 3DEC distinct element codes. The preliminary results suggest that BBMs are better suited for simulating intact rock behaviour than BPMs. Ongoing work aims to better qualify the applicability of BBMs under different conditions. IMA Engineering (IMA) and Mine On-Line Service (MOLS) companies have used on-line sensors for analysing ore and waste rock in mining for more than 25 years. Today IMA on-line sensors are used in various stages of the mining process including on-line analysis of drill cores, drill chips, ore and waste in loader bucket, ROM ore analysis on belt conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting and in slurry analysis in concentrators. During years of extensive field experience and testing we have found that the waste rock dilution and ore losses create much larger economic and environmental losses than has been previously recognized. According to our studies the main reason is limited number of analysis already in exploration when drill cores or drill cuttings are used in block modelling. The same happens in production because too few and biased samples from benches are used to estimate the ore grade. Much more than today estimated amount of waste enters the mill and considerable volumes of ore losses happen at the same time. The ore grade on the benches and in muck piles is averaged and “homogenized” with averaged and biased samples. These are the main root causes of waste rock dilution and ore losses. Sensor based preconcentration can be the remedy to waste rock dilution and ore losses. This presentation will show examples of the use of on-line sensors in preconcentration when analysing ore and waste rock in drill cores, drill cuttings, on conveyor belt and in bulk ore sorting. Waste rock removal in preconcentration has direct effect on energy consumption in crushing and grinding and chemicals in concentrator. In concentrator waste is separated and goes to tailings pond, however, preconcentration directly reduces the volume of the tailings. In our presentation we will cover cases in base metals and in gold mines.

Geological uncertainty is reduced by improved understanding of the relationship between regional-scale geological basement features (structure, composition, depth) and known local structural risk (such as recognised structural hazards at the mine). Coal mining and exploration entities can be more efficient and effective in managing geological risk at a range of scales. A more efficient and effective performance in forward interpreting and managing geological risk will result in a more efficient and effective exploration and also incremental or even significant mining cost improvements. In order to improve the understanding of basement features, a new 4D regional structural/basin framework for the Sydney Basin and the eastern part of the Gunnedah Basin has been constructed to provide primarily coal exploration and mining with a more integrated geological framework for ongoing subregional to mine-scale geological risk based studies. The model has been developed from a range of available regional geophysical and geological datasets, of variable detail and reliability, which have been brought together to generate a more robust structural and tectonic model than could be generated with any one single dataset. An initial regional structural model for the Sydney Basin was constructed in 2003 and an update to the model was released in 2005 (SRK Consulting, 2003; 2005). The development and ongoing refinement of the model was undertaken with financial and data support from a number of coal mining industry, gas exploration and government organisations. Prior to, and following the development of the regional structural/basin model and associated Information Base, a number of more area-specific studies have been completed, using the æbasement upÆ assessment approach. The methodology for developing comprehensive structural models, from the basement up, is outlined. The approach can be applied at a country-wide, regional or lease area scale. Case examples of where this approach has been used as an effective and efficient method in improving geological certainty and as a predictive tool to help manage geological risk are also presented.

Stilfontein Gold Mine, located approximately 160 km west of Johannesburg, produced both gold and uranium from 1952 through to the early 1990s. On decommissioning the mine infrastructure, treatment plants, rock dumps and three tailings facilities were left to be rehabilitated at considerable cost to the mining company. The community that had grown up with the mine and had settled in the mine village were faced with deteriorating socio- economic conditions.   Mine Waste Solutions (MWS), a company with a socio-economic Vision expressly created by DRD (Pty) Ltd and Fraser Alexander (Ltd) for the purpose, took over the mine surface infrastructure with the objective of closing it down in an economically sustainable manner by recovering materials, converting mine infrastructure to useful purposes and re-mining of the tailings to recover residual gold to finance the project. A business case was prepared and presented successfully to investors and bankers and the project was commenced in 2003.   The paper covers the scope of the project and gives an account of the practical lessons that were learnt as the project developed over a period of five years. Key technical issues that are covered by the paper are the re-mining techniques that were deployed to clean up the old tailings dam footprints and the selection of the deposition site to minimise the incremental impact associated with the tailings and concurrent rehabilitation of the facility. In addition the paper will outline the positive benefits that were generated for the community and the improvement that was achieved in the physical environment.   The paper illustrates clearly how a mine can be closed in a manner that produces benefits for the community, the environment and the investor.
