The early history of the mine is traced from the beginning of shaft sinking in 1886 to the purchase by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. in 1949. A necessary preliminary to mechanisation of the Borehole Seam was development of the Young Wallsend seam, andthis development is described. Surface reorganisation and coal handling arrangements are dealt with in detail. Then follows a description of the Borehole Seam mechanisation, the provision of power supply for this purpose, arid pumping arrangements in themine.INTRODUCTIONStockton Borehole Colliery is in the Parish of Teralba, between the townships of Teralba and Boolaroo, and about 12 miles from Newcastle. The colliery holding, a freehofd area of 2,560 acres, was apparently an original land grant when acquired by Teralba Co-operative Coal Company who decided to mine for coal and named the mine "Teralba Colliery." Shaft sinking was commenced in 1886 but was delayed by financial and water troubles to such an extent that it was not until 1901 that the Borehole Seam was reached.Coal was won until 1904 using a single 16 ft. diameter shaft, ventilation being achieved by means of a wooden boxing down one side of the shaft. This collapsed, and operations ceased until the mine was taken over in 1906 by a company known as "Borehole Colliery Limited," the principal stockholder being the Stockton Coal Company. It renamed the mine "Borehole Colliery." This new company immediately commenced sinking a 13 ft. diameter air shaft. In 1908 the Stocktol1 Colliery at Stockton was abandoned, and during the following year much of its equipment was transferred to Borehole Colliery. The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

With a particular electrode configuration, and a particular combination of electrode voltage and roll speed, a relatively small increase in electrode voltage, or a relatively small decrease in roll speed, resultsin a marked improvement in the separation of zircon from ilmenite. In general, fine minerals can be separated using a higher roll speed, or a lower electrode voltage, than is required to separate coarse minerals. The ionizing electrode should be reasonably close to the point at which mineral is fed on to the roll, and nearer to the roll than the non-ionizing electrode. The optimum conditions for the separation of zircon from ilmenite may not apply for the separation of other non-conductors from other conductors.INTRODUCTIONAlthough the high tension separators used in the Australian beach sand industry are efficient, this efficiency has been gained very largely by a process of trial and error, and not by a systematic study of the effects of changes in the operating variables. The optimum roll speed for a particular electrode position and electrode voltage, and the optimum electrode voltage for a particular roll speed and electrode position, can both be determined quite readily. It is not so simple to determine the optimum electrode position for a particular electrode voltage and roll speed. The reason for this is that the electrode used in high tension separators consists of two parts-an ionizing and a non-ionizing electrode respectively. The angular and radial positions of these electrodes, relative to the feed roll and to each other, affect the behaviour of conductors and non-conductors to varying degrees.

Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

Iron ore in the Middleback Range area has a density and susceptibility contrast with adjacent rocks, and gravity and magnetic methods are applicable to exploration for it. The gravity method is satisfactory whether the ore mineral is hematite, magnetite, or limonite; the magnetic method is suitable for detecting ores which contain magnetite, such as some hematite ore, magnetite ore, and possible ore in the form of magnetite-bearing schists. jaspilites, and carbonate rocks.Geophysical exploration began in 1948 and is still in progress. The methods which have been used are aeromagnetic (83 per cent), ground magnetic (13 per cent), gravity (3 per cent), and others (1 per cent). Ground magnetic surveys have been made wherever aeromagnetic surveys recorded large anomalies. The gravity method is being used to investigate those parts of the area considered most favourable for ore occurrence.Qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the geophysical data has been made and the rocks causing selected anomalies tested by bores.Magnetite in the Middleback Group rocks produces the major magnetic anomalies in the area. The average magnetite content of magnetite-jaspilite, which is the commonest rock type, is 33 per cent by weight and that of magnetite-carbonate at the Iron Duke-Iron Duchess is 50 per cent. These rock types also contain hematite and the average total iron content of the former is 35 per cent and of the latter 50 per cent.INTRODUCTIONThe geology and iron ore resources of the Middleback Range area were described by Miles (1954). Our ultimate resources come from the Sun and the Earth System. At this time we face a world crisis in energy, water and soil resources. Global pollution problems are increasing in almost all nations. There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.   There is a great need to improve science, natural science, education at all levels. All people must know how our planet works and that fluctuations, some inevitable, some controllable, are inevitable and that we must prepare for them. And it is clear that protecting the environment, eliminating pollution, preserving bio diversity is good economics. Ecology Economy cannot be separated.

The tracking of ore through process hold-ups such as stockpiles has been traditionally been difficult to achieve. The inability to pinpoint the exact source in the mine of material that is feeding a processing plant has led to inefficient mine-mill reconciliation processes. In addition, a lack of understanding of the behaviour of ore in process hold-ups such as bins and stockpiles often leads to poor predictions of plant performance and to poor reconciliation of this to the orebody.This paper reports on two short case studies. One case study addresses tracking ore from various parts of two mines to the concentrator. The other follows synthetic particles through the coarse ore stockpile. Both studies use radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracer technology. The paper concludes by discussing general strategies for implementation of such concepts into mine-mill metal accounting and reconciliation systems. As shown in this paper, reliable ore tracking systems will allow much more effective mine-mill reconciliations as well as the ability to model process hold-ups with regard to size by residence time distributions. This should, in turn, allow metallurgists to have a better understanding of the size and grade of material that will report to the plant at different process hold-up (eg stockpile) conditions.

Measurement of densities, susceptibilities, permanent magnetization, and calculation of demagnetization factors has allowed computer modelling of gravity and magnetic data over the Middleback Range iron formations of South Australia. As well as providing structural information, the study emphasizes the effects of weathering on the interpretation of magnetic data.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plahts, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the  cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high tum over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.   This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

The Triton lode is a schistose feldspar biotite chlorite rock with quartz, carbonate, pyrite and some pyrrhotite. Its more chloritic sections strongly resemble the enclosing greenstones, its more feldspathic portions are indistinguishable from the flne-grained phases of the porphyry dyke into which the southern extremity of the ore body merges. The ore body' has a length of 880 ft. and an average width of I2t ft.; in places this widens to as much as 30 ft.The average dip is 85° west and pitch of the ore shoot 75° south.METHOD OF SAMPLING.With the exception of a limited amount of channel sampling (a reference to which is made elsewhere in this paper) all the sampling is by chip sample.The samplers use a hammer weighing approximately 11 lb. and chip directly into the sample bags. Sampling is generally carried out over 3-ft. sections and portions thereof to the nearest half foot-thus a face 8t ft. wide is divided up into two sections of 3 ft. each and one section of 2 ft.-no measurements of less than 4 ft. are used and calculations are all in feet and dwt. per long ton.In the oxidised stopes wp.ere the lode is much narrower, .i.e., 6 ft., sampling is over 2-ft. sections. The information age has definitely arrived and in fact has only begun to affect our business processes. Traditionally mining companies have been innovators and leaders with technology, but applying information technology systems to machines directly working on the mining extraction process poses challenges to those introducing the technology. Caterpillar is now presenting machine guidance and information systems for dozers, graders, blast hole drills, shovels, excavators, wheel loaders and trucks. These systems simply increase the flow of real information in real time and deliver it to the end users who can make informed decisions that effect real productivity gains and at the same time eliminate the role of the middle manager who used to monitor and control these activities. Technology also offers cultural changes that appear intangible, but offer significant gains to those that implement technology. Critics state that these intangible benefits are still available to traditional processes, however these intangible elements are never identified nor managed without the introduction of technology enhanced processes. The benefits of these technologies are real and dramatic, existing users offer impressive testimonials, but still the technology can be disproportionate in the time it takes to introduce to an operation. Caterpillar finds that senior to executive management needs to be a part of the technology introduction, to coordinate all departments and set technology strategies.

The Main Seam occurs in two 'pods', termed North and South, separated by an east-west oriented 'want' zone (most probably a palaeo-channel). The seam on either side of the 'want' area reaches thicknesses of over 30 metres but the North Main Seam adjacent to the 'want' zone has been split into multiple seams of 10 to 15 m thickness. Rock types in the inter-burden of this area are characterised by inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones varying in thickness from 0.5 to 5 m. In the South Main Seam, an area of un-split coal exists and is characterised by few inorganic partings. Overburden in this area varies geographically from relatively thick mudstones in the south and east part of the coal deposit to inter-bedded sandstones and carbonaceous mudstones adjacent to the 'want' area. The sandstone/mudstone overburden probably represents a splay or splay-channel complex emanating from the larger 'want' area palaeo-channel. Modelling lithological variability is of use because it is one of the factors used in predicting cavability and roof support system design. The coal in both the north and south deposits were found to exhibit highly predictable quality and breakage parameters in relation to the coal geometry. Although ash yield and sulphur are mostly low and not variable, volatile matter and thus fixed carbon, varied in relation to seam thickness. In general, volatile matter (dat) decreased and moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness whereas moisture increased with decreasing seam thickness. In addition to these parameters it was found that the energy needed to crush the coal was lowest at the top and bottom of the seam and, on a whole seam basis, decreased with seam thickness. All of these parameters were found to vary in relation to the vitrain band content of the coal which itself was controlled by seam geometry. These parameters can therefore be modelled and inputted into mining plans and quality control operations.

The ore, as sent to the sulphide mill, is a mixture, in varying proportions, of oxidized ore from above the 450-ft. level and sulphide ore from above and below (to date mainly from above) that level. The oxidized ore consists essentially of quartz, with varying amounts of kaolin and clayey material which passes into the slime and, in excess, creates a serious problem in settling. Pyrite may be present in small amounts. The gold is free and extremely fine.The ore, classed as sulphide, consists of pyritic material in a quartz gangue. The sulphides have been exposed to weathering, leaching by descending solutions and attack by ascending gases and actual burning. The alteration products occur in widely varying proportions and this variation adds to the difficulties in settling and control of grinding and flotation.Copper Minerals.-Chalcopyrite is the principal copperbearing mineral with smaller and varying amounts of covellite, which is sometimes associated with chalcocite, both these minerals being apparently of secondary origin.Examination of tailing by Dr. Stillwell has revealed all stages between clean chalcopyrite, chalcopyrite tinged with covellite, covellite with residual cores of chalcopyrite and clean covellite.The chalcopyrite is free floating, very few particles of clean chalcopyrite being observed in the tailing from granular flotation. When it comes to structuring major mining contracts, the two most widely adopted formats are æmeasure and valueÆ and æcost-plusÆ. A problem with both of these formats is the difficultly of aligning the objectives of the mining company with those of the contractor to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. An alternative contractual arrangement is for the mining company to enter into an Alliance arrangement with the contractor, linking remuneration to mine performance across a range of targets. These targets can change over time as operational requirements change.   The aims of this paper are to: +        outline alternative types of mining contracts, as well as their strengths and pitfalls; +        describe the philosophy behind the Alliance contract at Newmont Waihi GoldÆs Favona underground mine; and +        identify some of the keys to success and pitfalls to avoid when implementing an Alliance.

About twelve months ago, owing to the increasing quantity of stone and dirt being drawn frQm the Victorian State Coal Mine due to the large amount of dead work below ground, cutting, faults, etc, and to the increasing quan#ty of banded coal beingworked, the writer was forced to consider the question of economy in handling the spoil at the surface. The method in operation at the time was to run out level dumps fro,m the, tipping floor of the heapstead, or brace, and to tip most of the skips of stone in tipplers at the ends of the dumps, the remainder of the skips being side-tipped to widen the dumps.The method, whilst quite satisfactory for dealing with a few skips of stone, was found to be costly as the dumps extended, and the number of skips to be dealt with increased from 300. to 400 per day of two shifts;. therefore, in order to expedite thework and cheapen its cost, the writer devised an improved method which may be qescribed as follows :-(1) The stone is tipped into a hopper car which holds about 10 skips(2) The hopper car is hauled up an inclined dump by means of an electric winch.(3) The spoil is dumped from the car forwards or to either side, as required.(4) The car is returned to the starting point for a further load.Plate I Fig. 1 gives an idea of the construction of the hopper car. Factors leading to the necessity for some individual testwork in solving most specific hydraulic transportation problems are listed and a description is given of a method used in determining critical flow conditions. An outline is given of the basic theory of the purpose of the testwork, and a means of applying test results for varied pipeline diamet.er and material conditions follows. Engineering and economic factors are applied to the solution of a specific hydraulic transportation problem and the use of the test results in plant practice is illustrated. The advantages of connecting pumps in series in centralised pumping stations rather than individually along the pipeline are stressed. Some notes are added on the future possibilities and economies of post pump injection of solids into high pressure pipelines.THE HYDRAULIC TRANSPORTATION OF SANDSAs well as all the classical variables involved in a pipeline installation, one must consider, when solids are to be transported, the effects of such variables as:(i) Proportion of solids in the pulp.(ii) The average specific gravity of the pulp.(iii) Specific gravity of the solid material.(iv) Solid particle average sizing and possibly shape.(v) Solids particle grading.(vi) Pipeline diameter for effects other than classically hydraulic.(vii) Pipeline material.(viii) Fluid viscosity.(ix) Pump characteristics.(x) Abrasive or corrosive properties of the pulp.Not surprisingly, the application of published data to the hydraulic transportation of a specific material is difficult if not well nigh impossible. The Late Miocene gold-silver bearing epithermal system at Waihi has some close similarities in its paleo-thermal and geochemical structure with modern, volcanic-hosted geothermal systems such as Ohaaki-Broadlands. At Waihi an extensive braided quartz vein system is enveloped by hydrothermally altered andesites with minor tuff breccias and tuffs. A main stage of vein filling consists of multiple phases of chalcedonic quartz and fine to medium grained quartz, which are accompanied by pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and acanthite below the base of oxidation. Platy calcite is present locally. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the main stage quartz was deposited at temperatures of 189¦-273¦C from dilute (Tm of -0.1 to -1.0¦C) fluids that were locally boiling. Homogenisation temperature Th versus Tm data points lie within the field enveloped by dilution and boiling/gas loss paths determined for the Ohaaki geothermal field, and indicates that the parent hydrothermal fluid for the Waihi epithermal system had a similar composition to that at Ohaaki, ie 0.2 wt% equiv NaCl and 3.3 wt% equiv CO2. The hydrothermal alteration mineralogy and the isotopic composition of vein calcite indicate that the hydrothermal fluid contained relatively high concentrations of CO2 , as at Ohaaki. Oxygen isotope analyses of main stage quartz range from 6.1 to 11.6 %0 and of vein calcite from 2.29 to 9.4%0. Calculated d18Owater values for the hydrothermal fluid that deposited the main stage quartz range from 2.0 to -5.7%0, with a trend to less negative values with depth. They are similar to those in the deep chloride fluid in active geothermal systems with a substantial fluid throughput. A high fluid throughput at Waihi system is also evident from the extensive high intensity hydrothermal alteration and large volume of quartz deposited in the vein system.
