Giving the keynote address in the final session of a conference dealing with closely related topics has a disadvantage in that much of what can be said has been said. It also has an advantage, however, because it presents the speaker with the opportunity to integrate and analyse the material presented by the various speakers. I would like to look to the near future in Aust- ralia and the United States of America, to the risks, problem areas, and changes of a rapidly evolving post-industrial era-an era we are begin- ning to experience where industry no longer `calls the tune'. We miners have been quick to point out and emphasize, that ours is a `high-risk' industry in the world of business and commerce. Yet, clearly those who have survived, and been successful, have learned to anticipate and cope with risk and change. This ability has been a distinguishing feature of the industry's leaders who, in market studies and commodity selection, exploration and development, mine planning, metallurgical pro- cessing, and general administration and operation 1. identify areas of risk or inevitable change, 2. analyse, test and quantify those factors of risk or change, and 3. design methods, systems, equipment to elim- inate, moderate, or control or economically compensate for predicted risks or changes.

To control the airblast from blasting to regulatory limits at environmentally sensitive sites near the Collinsville Coal Mining Operations, it has been necessary for Thiess Mining to incorporate a wavefront reinforcement analysis model in the predictive environmental airblast design. Controlling airblast from cast blasting 70 m high faces with 2000-3000 kg of explosives per hole within 700 m of houses presents a considerable challenge to the blasting personnel. This paper describes the model used and summarises the results of an investigation designed to quantify the increase in airblast indicated by wavefront reinforcement diagrams to further calibrate the model for future prediction.

Among the various methods of thick-seam mining already well-tried in practice longwall caving with extraction of a single slice, as thick as possible, abandoning the top and/or the bottom coal, seems to be the most suitable one for the Australian coal mining industry. The production units of the future should be equipped with heavy double-drum shearer-loaders, wide armoured conveyors, (with one or two central chains) and shield support. Material of this type has been developed for seams up to 6 m thick. Output figures of more than 6,000 tROM/d from a single face can be looked upon as a quite realistic expectation. The problems of co-ordinating such large production units with the whole layout of the mine are discussed. The factors to be taken into account in the planning work and for preven- tion of mine fires caused by spon- taneous combustion are dealt with. For economic reasons the highest possible utilization factor of the very expensive equipment must be aimed at. Furthermore, the seams or parts of seams to be extracted should be carefully selected.

The valuation of exploration properties which contain no identified resources or reserves is the most subjective of all valuation tasks likely to be carried out by a geologist. The geoscience rating method proposed by Kilburn (1990) recognises this inherent subjectivity but also attempts to apply some discipline to the valuation process. Some other methods used for valuations of this type clearly lack discipline and are open to misuse and abuse. The Kilburn method essentially requires the practitioner to justify all aspects of the valuation process. The valuer must specify and, more importantly, quantify aspects which enhance or downgrade the intrinsic value of each property. The intrinsic value is called the ""base acquisition cost"" (BAC) and it represents the average cost to identify, apply for and retain a base unit of area of title. The BAC and base unit of area both vary with different types of exploration and mining title but remain constant for similar types of titles in the same mineral tenure regime. In the Kilburn Method the enhancement/ downgrading factors are determined by the geotechnical prospectivity (Kilburn Method) within the title. A modified version of the Kilburn Method presented here (""Modified Kilburn Method"") also focuses attention on other real variables besides the geotechnical attributes which influence valuations of this type, viz., competition for tenure and activity in the markets in which the exploration properties are being traded. The most active such market at present is the stock market. By utilising uniform BACs and base units of area (for similar titles) for all exploration properties (in practice in Australia this is only possible within a particular State or Territory), the method exposes the valuer's opinions of each of these variables to the scrutiny of the investor. The investor (or his professional adviser) is afforded the opportunity to directly compare valuations on different properties by different practitioners and can assess how the final valuation is weighted in respect of geotechnical prospectivity, competition for tenure, and stock/financial market sentiment. No other method currently employed in Australia to value mineral exploration properties affords the investor this `luxury', which some may argue is their right.

A brief history of the development of pneumatic flotation cells from early in the 20th century to the present day and a comparison to conventional cells demonstrates the efficiency and simplicity of design and operation of the ænew generationÆ of pneumatic cells. Recent successful testwork on phosphate minerals in the USA and a variety of coal types in Australia confirm the utility and efficiency of the design. The key aspects of this technology are improved recovery and selectivity with lower capital expenditure and operating costs.

Although this is a symposium on "The Occurrence, Preparation and Use of Australian Black Coal", I do not think that, in these days, any of the main energy resources can be considered only in terms of country of origin or only by itself in isolation from other energy resources. Accordingly, I propose to comment on solid fuels generally in the world energy scene, and make some brief references to Australian solid fuels, and to some other matters in the latter part of this paper. In this address I am drawing heavily on the 1974 survey of energy resources published just recently by the World Energy Conference. I do this for a number of reasons. Firstly, the survey is the latest and most comprehensive publication of its kind; secondly, it is the result of several years' work by a panel of eminent people, from all the energy industries and from some 16 widely spread countries; thirdly, substantial assistance was given by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in its compilation; and, finally, to let all know of the existence of the book, as I believe it to be a source document for all those interested in world energy resources. The United Nations "J" series of statistical papers provide important information on the annual production and consumption of and trade in the various forms of energy. In their respective areas, these two publications are primary information sources. Our present sources of energy throughout the world are fossil fuel deposits (coal, oil, gas), nuclear materials, water, geothermal, solar and tidal - but we are at present heavily dependent upon the natural stores of non-renewable fossil energy resources. Fig. 1 shows the changing use of energy resources in the present century. A comparison between 1900 and 1973 shows clearly the shift which has taken place.

Transport to and handling of iron ore at Port Hedland, Western Australia, results in the generation of airborne particulates that contribute to the atmospheric dust load, with concerns about potential local environmental impacts (eg mangrove swamps) and possible human health implications. Mineral and chemical characteristics of the Background soil samples were contaminated with particles of iron ore as martite octahedra and grains of micro-platy hematite as detected by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the 2.5 - 10 ¦m and 10 - 50 ¦m size fractions. Fossilized wood fragments similar to those observed in Yandicoogina fines ore were also detected in some background soil samples. With a predicted increase in demand of channel iron deposits (CID) ores and the inherently dusty Marra Mamba ores (eg West Angelas, MAC, OB29/30/35, Marandoo), in conjunction with particulate emissions from hot-briquetted iron and direct reduced iron (HBI/DRI) processing plants, there is the potential for additional sources of anthropogenic dust to contribute to background levels. Mineralogical and chemical characterisation of the entire range of particulates that could be produced is necessary for a complete understanding of their potential impact on the local environment.

I would like to start by thanking The AusIMM and CSIRO for organising this excellent conference and inviting me to give a keynote address. Today I will focus on some broad observations of our industry, and leave the technical discussion to my colleagues who are presenting specific papers covering a wide range of topics. In preparation for this paper, I did a little research into the early history of the Pilbara iron ore industry. I was fascinated to read a quote attributed to Harry P Woodward, the Government Geologist in the late 19th century, before Federation. Mr Woodward described the Pilbara as an iron ore country and observed that æthere is enough to supply the whole world should the present sources be worked outÆ. Mr WoodwardÆs prediction could be viewed as wishful thinking and certainly at Hamersley Iron I would gladly envisage the Pilbara supplying the worldÆs entire iron ore needs! In reality, Western Australia accounted for 162 million tonnes or 36 per cent of seaborne trade in 2001. An impressive effort, but not quite the total world supply as Mr Woodward imagined. But we shouldnÆt dismiss these historical musings out of hand û perhaps we could see it as a challenge for the industry to æwork outÆ the present sources. We all know there is abundant iron ore in the Pilbara, and I expect it is only a matter of time until our collective technical expertise and sheer hard work will enable us to utilise its greater range of ore types. Opening up new markets will be a key pathway to creating additional value from the Pilbara ores. Today I will examine the state of play of our industry and the major influences that shape our business at present, before considering what the future might hold for us. I canÆt guarantee the accuracy of my crystal ball, but the stability and long-term nature of our industry does enable some reasonable hypotheses on where we are heading. I will also spend some time examining the way in which the iron ore producers are working to maximise the value of their resource base and obtain more from their existing capital assets.

This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development, engineering and construction of a process plant for the biological oxidative pre-treatment of a refractory pyrite-arsenopyrite gold ore flotation concentrate. Prefeasibility and feasibility study resource modeling, metallurgical testwork, and environmental and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered for oxidation of the ore, which examine cost, risk, operability, recovery, engineering and environmental aspects are compared, with particular reference to pressure and biological oxidation. The BIOX« biological oxidation process was selected as the preferred oxidation process and the flow sheet for this process is presented. Selection of the BOIX« process resulted in special requirements for the feed preparation circuit, residue treatment and disposal, materials of construction and engineering. Use of a biological process in ore treatment also introduces particular process and engineering risks the management of which are discussed.

The VERT project 1993 - 1998 laid the technical foundation for curtailing the emission of fine particles from diesel engines at Swiss underground workplaces. The targeted maximum was 100 ¦g/m3 EC. Extensive laboratory and field investigations demonstrated that this specification is only attainable with modern diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems that almost eliminate particles in the entire lung penetrating size range from 20 nm to 2.5 ¦m. In January 2000, Switzerland mandated compulsory particle filters in underground workplaces, particularly in tunnelling, irrespective of engine age, size and type. After the implementation, the particle concentration in the respiratory air was below 40 ¦g/m3 EC, compared to earlier values of up to 750 ¦g/m3 EC. Deployed DPFs have proven filtration rates of 99 per cent in the entire size range of alveoli intruding particles. The DPFs are as durable as the engine, suffer no ageing and require minimal maintenance. The failure rate is below three per cent annually. Of the 6000 retrofitted construction machines in Switzerland, about 400 are deployed underground. Prerequisites for this quality are a sophisticated certification procedure, electronic monitoring of DPF operation and meticulous periodic exhaust gas inspection of the engines.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

Overburden removal, mining and reclamation are now accepted as the basic operational steps involved in the winning of coal by open cut methods. To attain the lowest operational cost, the recontouring and revegetation of spoilpiles must be planned concurrently with the planning of overburden removal and mining. The earthworks associated with reclamation work on spoilpiles often account for 75 - 90 per cent of total reclamation costs. Experience at Callide Mine has shown that the way that spoilpiles are contoured does influence water retention and can reduce erosion from rainfall run-off. However, provided the recontoured slopes meet'Mines Department specifications, the quality of reclamation work is judged not by the quality of the earthworks but by the plant regrowth on the reshaped surface. Thus it is the quality of the revegetation which is of prime importance. For vegetation to be successful, time must be spent on planned research into methods of overcoming plant nutrient deficiencies and selection of suitable grass and tree species. This paper records the observations of faulting in the Black Star mine workings. By classifying the faults into two groups, i.e., strike faults and transverse faults, and by pointing out the differences between the groups and their effects on the silver-lead-zinc orebodies, a time relationship between the two groups of faults and the sulphide mineralisation is suggested.GENERAL GEOLOGY AND MINERALISATIONFolding and faulting are closely related to the mineralisation in the shales by silver-lead-zinc and iron sulphides.Commonly the various sulphides are fine-grained and closely associated with one another. However, exceptions do occur locally, where massive coarse galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and to a lesser extent chalcopyrite, have been observed singly or closely associated one with the other.In the main, the sulphide mineralisation forming the orebodies occurs as replacement of, and infilling along, the sheared bedding planes of the finely bedded shale host rock.The shales in general strike north-south with an average dip to 60° to the west; strong shearing along the bedding planes is evidenced by much slickensiding and slaty cleavage.Sequences of finely bedded shales of varying stratigraphic thicknesses alternate with very. massive beds, and it is in the more highly sheared thinner beds that the greatest concentration of sulphides occurs. The unmineraIised massive beds of shale, 11 in. up to 12 in. in thickness, occur singly or in groups between, and to a lesser extent. within, the orebodies. The massive beds resisted sulphide replacement and impart to the orebodies a most prominent banded structure.

There was a time, in the memory of some here tonight, when the annual meeting of The Institute was a nostalgic occasion. Often, in the 1920s, there was comment on the decline of Australian mining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries. When some of our Presidents prayed then for a new Bendigo, and instead were given a Mount Isa, they were justifiably disappointed because of the vastly different capital requirements.In 1967 the mining picture is very different. The recent mining developments in Australia are certainly as important as several Bendigos and several Kalgoorlies. The mining industry in Australia has never been more dynamic than today (Table 1). And if we ask why it is so dynamic, the answer lies in the role which overseas capital is playing in the industry. The contribution of overseas capital should concern us not only because we are members of the mining and metallurgical profession, but also because we have a duty to make our profession contribute as much as possible to the well-being of Australians. It is not sufficient to argue that overseas capital is good for the mining industry; we must also examine whether it is good for the economy and the nation. In this context the current criticism of the inflow of overseas capital into Australian mining is useful, for it gives us an opportunity to see what has resulted from the inflow.In discussing this question I do not suggest that we emulate Captain Hancock, that legendary Moonta mine manager who, according to Oswald Pryor's cartoon, used to say to his miners: "When I say a thing is, it is, even if it isn't". The question can only be discussed on a factual basis; and I would submit that many of the important facts relating to overseas capital in our mining industry are often overlooked or ignored. I would further submit, on the basis of these facts, that Australia's present day mining industry has been largely built on overseas capital and that the overall benefits of that capital to Australia have been enormous.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. Numerical modelling is extensively used in civil and mining engineering applications because of cost and risk problems associated with different experimental studies. In this study, the effect of resin thickness was evaluated in bolt-grout-concrete interaction and bending behaviour of a fully grouted bolt installed across joints in post failure region. Tests were conducted in 20 and 40 MPa concretes, and modelling simulations were made, using ANSYS version 8.1, to include both with and without different pretension loads. It was found that in all resin thickness, both the strength of the concrete and bolt pretension had major influences on the shear resistance and shear displacement of the reinforced medium. Also it was found that the strength of the surrounding concrete is more important than that of the grout thickness in both the shear resistance and shear displacement when the bolt is pretensioned.

The geotechnical and environmental aspects of heap leaching are very closely tied during design, operations and closure. Potential environmental impacts from heap leaching are mostly due to land disturbance and water quality issues, including both groundwater and surface water. Water quality issues are mostly related to containment design, which is primarily a function of proper sizing of the facilities and site specific liner design. Geotechnical analyses is the dominant discipline in providing cost efficient, operationally effective and environmentally sound heap leach facility designs. Much has been published on geotechnical aspects of heap leach design, for example Van Zyl, Hutchison and Kiel (1988) and Van Zyl (1987). This paper will emphasize a few specific aspects related to the geotechnical and environmental consideration for heap leach projects. These aspects are: ò site investigation; ò containment design; ò slope stability; ò heap flow dynamics; and ò closure design. Design of a heap leach project must consider not only the operating life but also closure and post-closure considerations. As a matter of standard practice, designing for closure is an extremely important concept. Not only is it important for environmental aspects, but experience also shows that projects designed for closure will be overall more economical for the total life cycle of the project. Closure considerations are also important during project feasibility evaluations to ensure that total life cycle costs are evaluated.

It is now 32 years since Walsh's classic publication (1) heralded the beginning of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA) as we know it today. During this time, AA has developed into the most widely used analytical techniques for the determination of the metallic elements. The years have seen progressive changes in instrumentation so that today it is a highly sophisticated technique. One area of development in AA that is experiencing renewed attention is in the area of electrothermal excitation. In this technique a flame is not used by the analyte solution is atomised by an electrically heated graphite furnace. For a large number of elements the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAA) is considerably more sensitive than flame work. It is common to be able to detect concentrations one hundred times smaller than those possible by flame. Today's geochemists are finding that they can gain valuable information out of very low limits of detection. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry (or GFAA) allows for low limits of detection and can be seen to be a valuable aid to geochemical prospecting Analysis.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Gold mineralisation at the Penjom gold deposit in the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia is hosted in structurally-controlled quartz-carbonate veins that display a variable degree of overprinting events under a ductile-brittle regime. Mineralised veins are categorised into two main types: shear and extension veins. Shear veins are interpreted as forming during the fold and thrust episode (D2 event) along the bedding and the Penjom Thrust ore zone. The shear veins are associated with discordant extension veins. In addition, NE- to NNE-trending splays and Penjom-Thrust-parallel reverse-dextral and locally NNW to N–S reverse-sinistral faults overprint earlier vein events, forming a new episode of extensional veins during the D3 event. This is mostly at the fault contacts of intrusives, either as shallow-dipping or vertical-sheeted stockwork or brecciated veins. At least two episodes of faulting comprising D4-D5 are evident, which postdates the main episodes of veining and mineralisation. This is indicated by a series of late episode N–S-trending sinistral and oblique to normal faults that transect and displace the Penjom Thrust and the folded footwall sequence at low angles, and are interpreted to be responsible for intensive vein deformation along the Penjom Thrust and displacement of the orebody. Structural interpretations of mineralised veins suggest that the veins were formed under a compressional to transpressional regime, with later post-vein displacement in a transtensional to extensional regime. Vein formation in response to deformation observed at Penjom reflects regional structural deformation within the Central Belt of Peninsular Malaysia and specifically along the Bentong-Raub Suture zone.CITATION:Endut, Z, Ng, T F, Abdul Aziz, J H and Teh, G H, 2015.
