An extensive laboratory campaign was conducted to find a suitable water soluble collector to replace diphenylguanidine (DPG) in the matte separation process. The examination of the collectors was done by measuring the rate of flotation and the best candidate collectors were selected on the basis of the rate parameters. As a result of this search mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was selected for a plant trial. A plant trial of two weeks duration confirmed that MBT will produce separations at least as good as those obtained with DPG.

As part of the fundamental studies on the recovery of Au by solvent extraction, the synergism of combined extractants on the extraction of An from the sulphuric acid solution containing thiourea was investigated. Extractants tested were di-(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA), tri-n-octylamine (TOA), tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), and trioctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO). Four kinds of extractant combinations, D2EHPA/TBP, D2EHPA/TOPO, TOA/I'BP, and TOAITOPO, were tested to clarify the synergism on the extraction of Au in terms of various concentration ratios, diluents, the concentration of sulphuric acid, and the concentration of thiourea.

Graded macadam slag base has been used successfully by the Department of Main Roads, N.S.W., in the construction of Expressways. However, the use of graded macadam in urban conditions introduces problems which can be avoided by the use of material meeting the specification outlined in M.R. Form 744. This paper outlines the rationale behind the technical requirements of the specification for the "Supply of natural gravel or crushed rock for road pavement (bitumen surfaced) M.R. Form 744". A blend of materials produced from slag is proposed as a potential solution for the production of slag base which would be suitable for use in urban construction or maintenance of roads.

A geologic, petrographic and geochemical study has been performed on the pyroclastic flow deposits in the coastal area of East Zhejiang Province, Southeast China. This study leads to classification of the pyroclastic flow deposits into three associations: the extrusive type, the surge type and the ash flow type welded tuff associations. Through detailed investigation and comparison of the characteristics of these lithologic associations, with emphasis on the welded tuffs, a comprehensive model has been proposed to demonstrate the petrogenesis of the pyroclastic flow deposits.

An algorithm is described which leads directly to a unique set of coal washing parameters which, in two or more parallel streams, will give maximum yield of product at a given ash. This occurs when all parallel streams are washed to the same incremental ash. This strategy is shown to offer a considerable increase in yield compared to the simpler strategy of washing each stream to the same sumulative ash.

The evaluation programme and procedures develop- ed for Saindak porphyry copper-gold-silver- molybdenum deposits located in an isolated area in an extremely and region of Baluchistan are described in detail. Due to its isol .ted location, far removed from supply centres, harsh climate, paucity of water and non-availability of even unskilled labour, Saindak presented problems for which no ready made solution exist- ed. In a coal mine there are many substances capable of ignition under certain circumstances, which can be placed in the following groups: ordinary combustible solids, dusts, liquids and vapours, gases, metals and plastics. There are many factors influencing ignition, including temperature, minimum ignition energy, particle size, explosion pressure level, rate of pressure rise, specific energy content and also explosive limit. Not all are applicable in every case. Frictional ignition of methane is an accident statistic of increasing concern and is considered in some detail. Practical measures that can be taken to reduce the incidence of frictional ignitions are considered, and also possible ways of ignition suppression.

Commercial pelletizing commenced in 1955 to agglomerate very fine concen- trates which could not be fed directly to the blast furnace. Extensive develop- ment has taken place and is continuing. There are now three main heat hardening processes in use. Plants are operating, or under construction, throughout the world capable of producing in excess of 125 million tons per year of pellets from concentrates or direct mined orefines. The Whyalla Pellet Plant, which commenced production in May 1968, is examined in detail to illustrate the general principles of pelletizing. This plant converts high grade iron ore fines into high quality pellets at a rate in excess of 2 million tons per year.

The coal under the ridgeline is the most valuable part of the known reserve at Solid EnergyÆs Stockton Opencast Mine. Some ridgeline mining had been attempted in the past with mixed results. Solid Energy recognised that significant project planning was required in order to overcome the formidable technical issues associated with mining the area. It also recognised that the local community also had concerns about the potential impacts of this work including the visual impact of changing the topography of the ridgeline and the nearness of the Department of Conservation estate.   This paper outlines some of the risks and challenges that were faced and the management approaches that were adopted to address them.
