Due to the increase of passenger traffic, a new station is proposed which is about 6.8km from south station. An underground connection line is under feasibility study for connecting these two stations in order to avoid the in- terference with surface traffic. The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.

Some twelve months of operation at Mount Lyell, using two large diameter ball mills as a two-stage grinding circuit indicated a short- fall in the grinding capability compared with design criteria. Breakage, particularly at coarser sizes, was less efficient than with the previously used grinding circuit comprising a large number of smaller diameter mills. This paper describes both old and new equipment, puts forward the facts as they are presently known, and lists the attempts made to overcome the problem.

The Ranger uranium mine has operated in the Kakadu region of the Northern Territory since 1979. The mine's water management system was designed to cater for the wet-dry monsoonal climate and to satisfy the recommendations of the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry - Second Report, 1977 (The Fox Report) with respect to environment protection. The Fox Report advised that the aquatic ecosystem of the region must be protected and that the mine should collect all runoff from disturbed areas. Furthermore, the mine was to operate as a no-release system until release standards, based on the experience of several years of operation and on the results obtained from monitoring and scientific investigations, could be established. Monitoring and research data have now been collected for a decade. it is evident that lower-than-expected concentrations of chemical constituents are present in the runoff waters which are retained on site. Standards have been established for the release of these waters to the streams when in flood during the wet season. Mine water quality data and release standards are presented. It can be confidently concluded that controlled release will not cause detriment to the aquatic ecosystems of the Kakadu region. The Ranger operation has demonstrated that environmentally responsible management of mine waters is feasible for future mining ventures in the Kakadu region.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralized areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado, has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles (1) could have been better utilized to first predict and minimize the environmental problems, and (2) can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

'Industrial Minerals - their mining and use in New Zealand' is the theme of the 1978 Annual Conference of the New Zealand Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. This paper describes the use of phosphate rock, sulphur and potassium chloride (potash) - three industrial minerals which have enabled the farmers of New Zealand to increase production to current levels. The growth of imports of these raw materials for the New Zealand fertiliser industry is well documented in NZ Fertiliser Statistics 1977. This is the most recent of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries annual publications on this Subject prepared from the detailed returns of fertiliser manufacture and sales from each fertiliser works. There are now 12 of these works in New Zealand one of the most recently established being in Whangarie where this conference is being held. Its capacity to manufacture superphosphate will shortly be 300 000 tonnes twice that when it opened late in 1964. New grinding and manufacturing equipment comes on stream early in 1979. This paper illustrates the interdependence of two primary industries, agriculture and mining. New Zealand's economy in the foreseeable future will be based on agriculture so that our standard of living is dependent on the overseas prices and freight costs of the bulk raw materials from which our fertilisers are made. For the year ended 31 March 1978 New Zealand's total exports were $3395 million, of this total $2413 million (71%) came from the products of pastoral agriculture (wheat, wool, dairy and other animal products), $291 million from forest products and $501 (15%) from manufactured exports. Approximately half of the pastoral receipts can be attributed to the fertilisers applied at a total cost of about $200 million including subsidy.

To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The physical and chemical properties of both wet sediment pastes and magmas envisaged as hydrolised silicate masses are entirely dependent on the enormous internal surfaces of their disordered solvated components. Management requires up-to-date information on the activities of an enterprise in order to maintain control and to assist in decision-making and planning. In today's environment it is essential that this information is immediately available and in an easily assimilated format. If this is not the case, management is forced to make decisions based on intuition and past experience. At Mt Newman Mining Co, a computer application has been developed and implemented with the objective of providing this type of information to management. The Key Parameter Reporting System (as the application is known) allows for daily (constant) on-line capture of selected production statistics, safety statistics and free format textual comments relating to topics such as industrial relations, major maintenance and other pertinent news. Information can be retrieved,'and displayed or printed in either a tabular or graphical format. All senior managers have colour visual display units in their offices for immediate access to the system. Access to selected sensitive information is controlled. All company staff are able to retrieve unsecured information from the system via visual display units installed in all company Locations.

Sunburst PCF (Penetrating Cone Fracture) technology has recently undergone extensive underground field trials at Leinster Nickel Operations, Western Australia. Trials with the Sunburst machine started in September 1994 and continued through to December 1994 during which approximately 130 metres of tunnel were developed. The Sunburst technology was used to excavate sub-levels through ultramafic nickel ore for future sub-level caving operations at the Perseverance nickel mine. The Sunburst machine demonstrated reasonable instantaneous advance rates, however, there are still a number of future developments/design changes which need to be addressed prior to the PCF technology being trialed again in a production environment. This paper benchmarks conventional drill and blast at Leinster against the Sunburst Excavator machine performance within similar tunnel dimensions and rock conditions. In addition to productivity and cost information; environmental considerations, support and labour requirements are also discussed. Problems with the current machine design are highlighted and possible future design changes are suggested. The Sunburst machine could be a suitable technology for advancing development through weak to moderate rock conditions and may also reduce overall support costs. With the potential for automation and the ability to reduce rock damage into the development tunnel walls, it is proposed that the Sunburst machine warrants further consideration.

An important problem in open pit mine planning is that of detennining the optimum ultimate pit limits of the mine. These limits are that contour which is the result of extracting the volume of material which provides the total maximum profit while satisfying certain practical operational requirements such as safe wall slopes. The determination of the optimum pit contour provides information that is essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of the mineral deposit. A number of optimisation techniques are available for determining this contour with the Lerchs-Grossman and the Network Flow methods being the most favoured. Unfortunately, direct application of these techniques to large ore-bodies may cause considerable difficulties because of the computational time and storage requirements. In this paper, we present a strategy for resolving these problems, and the associated pit design software PITOPTIM (incorporating a fast network flow technique) and a data reducer, BOUND. The results presented highlight the speed and power of the software package rivalling the popular Lerchs-Grossman technique. An application of the software for a sensitivity analysis is also presented and discussed.

The first introduction of automatic control systems for flotation occurred about fifteen years ago. The early control work coincided with the introduction of on-line assaying using XRF techniques. This OSA availability, coupled with the emergence of small digital computers suitable for process control in the late 1960-s, meant that the necessary process information and control hardware existed for flotation control experiments. A period of intensive research related to flotation control. ensued. A great deal of effort was devoted to the development of mathematical models of flotation. Plant experimentation sought to understand the effects of a range of flotation variables on the process. Finally, control loops were proposed and plant tested. An evolutionary pattern emerges when the range of flotation control installations is examined. The earliest systems had as objectives process stabilisation using reagent control. There were also some early attempts at flotation optimisation procedures, again using reagent variation. Current work is still associated with the same objectives. One of the difficulties with flotation control has been to recognise and define clear and precise control objectives. More emphasis is now placed on cleaner control which has the advantage that the objectives are usually well defined. A number of flotation control systems which cover a range of control system types is discussed. Based on this accumulated experience,a list of good and bad practice in flotation control is Proposed.

Measurements of coulombic efficiency (QE) for zinc electrodeposition were carried out under mass-transfer-controlled conditions using a rotating disc electrode in synthetic acidic zinc sulphate solutions. Various methods of solution preparation and purifi- cation were investigated using reagents vary- ing from analytical grade to high purity; the purest solution was obtained-by dissolving 99.9999% zinc (Koch-Light) in sulphuric acid solution (BDH Aristar). Improvements in sol- ution purity did not necessarily increase QE, especially where apparently beneficial impur- ities (e.g., Pb) were initially present. The maximum QE obtainable through variation of temperature (T), current density-(i) and elec- trode rotation rate was established using a statistical optimization technique. The QE was determined principally by T and i, with significant interaction between these factors in the highest purity solution. QE contours, which gave an overall view of solution per- formance, were constructed and predictions about the response under conditions similar to plant practice were made. Wark's Rule (the dependence of QE on zinc/acid ratio) was obeyed in the purest solution over the range of composition commonly encountered in zinc plants. High concentrations of Na2SO4 and K2SO4, which occur in some plant solutions, were found to increase QE marginally ("1.2%). The intrinsic effects of individual impurities such as Cu and Ni were evaluated by additions (up to 5 ppm) to the purest solution. Decreases in QE were found to be minimal at the impurity levels normally encountered in zinc plants.

A model of dense medium cyclones is developed based on balancing the terminal velocities of the discrete particles due to the centrifugal force against a random turbulent eddy velocity. An expression of the form P - or Q _ 1 100 e."A where P is the partition number., is a function of cyclone efficiency, particle size and density differential between the particle and medium, and is the slurry spilt, is developed and may be used for regressing plant partition data. The above model provides an understanding of peculiarities of the partition curve such as asymmetrical tails, elevation of the cutpoint and elevation of the d50 with increasingly fine feed. The effect of feed variables such as particle size, medium viscosity and changes in spigot or vortex finder diameter is shown. A means of convoluting the partition curve with various feed washabilities is discussed together with how the above may be used to evaluate plant performance for a variety of feeds.

The results of calibration trials conducted on parachute stoppings under a recently completed NERD&DC grant are presented. Applications of parachute stoppings, for rapid regulation and control of ventilation networks are described including use in mine recoveries, sealing sections and rescue work. Parachute stoppings are one of a series of non-rigid ventilation control structures specifically designed for quick installation in emergency situations, for use in high production/rapid advance areas and areas suffering roof-floor convergence.

Direct measurements of liquid contents in foams obtained from (x-terpineol a-T) n-pentanol (AmOH) and n-octanol (OctOH) solutions were carried out using a column of special construction. The column enables to determine the liquid contents by cutting-off foam layers of various thicknesses and measuring amounts of liquid contained in the cut-off foam layers. Liquid contents in the whole foam layers, in the top foam layers of thickness 14 ¦ 1 mm and distribution of water alongside foam height were determined. The average liquid contents were high and reached a level of 30, 35 and 40 per cent for foams formed from cc-T, AmOH and OctOH solutions, respectively. The liquid contents in the top foam layers were much smaller. They were of an order of five per cent for a-T and AmOH and 12 per cent for OctOH. On the basis of the liquid distribution alongside foam height some practical conclusions concerning possibilities of minimising amounts of liquid contained in the collected concentrate are presented.

Geometallurgical modelling is now a hot topic in deposit evaluation and in optimising mine performance; however, its history is long and varied. Historically metallurgical sampling has frequently suffered from a lack of data due to the cost of producing representative bulk samples. In the early 1990s geometallurgical modelling similarly suffered from a lack of data due to complex, time consuming and expensive sampling techniques. More recently, simple and relatively cheap tests for geometallurgical variables such as hardness, grindability, throughput, SAG power index, bond work index, crushing index, mineral recovery and concentrate grade have become widespread. The cheaper sampling has resulted in relatively large geometallurgical databases. However, most of the geometallurgical variables sampled are implicitly (and incorrectly) assumed to be additive when modelled by traditional geostatistical techniques, often leading to ill-informed and costly decisions. Geometallurgical variables are mostly non-additive so the current geostatistical challenge is to develop new approaches to dealing with this type of data. This paper briefly describes a historical case study of geometallurgical modelling of the George Fisher Pb-Zn mine completed in the mid 1990s, then outlines some of the current misconceptions of geometallurgical data and modelling techniques regularly applied to it, and finally discusses some recent developments in geometallurgical modelling, with examples from a number of current clients indicating the direction forward.

The Australian gold industry has in recent years experienced a tremendous growth period, though not to levels prevailing at the turn of the century. There are, however, a number of dynamic factors at play which collectively indicate that it would be unwise to assume that this growth will be maintained; indeed the future discovery of viable new deposits may be insufficient to prevent an industry decline in Australia.The higher gold prices of the 1980's together with technological advances, made previously worked mining centres areas of excellent prospectivity. These resources, signposted for us by the oldtimers, are being rapidly depleted. Whilst there can be no doubt that these resources can be replaced the real question is whether it is economic to explore for new deposits when it is likely that:The cost of future exploration will increase as exploration must focus on grassroot areas with few signposts. Almost by definition this primary exploration effort will be subject to a lower success ratio.The cost of future exploration will increase as new deposits will be located in more remote areas and at depth.

The association of graphite with a fine grained pyrite in the Mount Isa lead-zinc ore was investigated from mineralogical and metallurgical standpoints. The pyrite has been partially or completely replaced by galena and to a less extent by sphalerite, pyrrhotiteand chalcopyrite with the retention of graphite films or inclusions. During lead flotation the graphite imparts a spontaneous flotability to all associated minerals, resulting in a low grade fraction, which we call the carbonaceous fraction, floating with and diluting the lead concentrate. In times of low metal prices this fraction seriously reduces the economic value of the lead concentrate. A flotation procedure was developed to upgrade the carbonaceous fraction separately, producing an economic concentrate and a tailing.INTRODUCTIONThe lead concentrate produced from Mount Isa ores can vary from 20 to 50 per cent lead, depending on the locality in the mine from which the ore is obtained. Variations of this order are independent of ore grade and lead recovery. The large variation is related to the presence in the ore of a variable fast floating low grade fraction known locally as the carbonaceous fraction because of its association with graphite. During conventional lead flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate the carbonaceous fraction floats rapidly and unselectively with normal Mount Isa galena.The paper discusses mainly the examination and treatment of an average carbonaceous fraction, defined here as the fast floating material in the mill feed of late 1956. The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

The use of gravity concentration is, and has always been, the conventional primary method for gold recovery from alluvial deposits. The development of high capacity cone concentrators and metallurgically efficient wash-waterless spiral separators has had some impact in the technology for alluvial gold processing, but perhaps more significantly has led to the relatively recent use of this gravity concentration technology in grinding circuits of hard rock ore for "coarse" gold removal and for scavenging gold locked in sulphides from cyanidation tailings streams.Gravity concentration systems are relatively low-cost, non-polluting and energy efficient; and their judicial use in gold treatment plants can significantly reduce overall capital and operating costs.The application of modern gravity concentration technology to hard-rock and alluvial gold ore treatment is discussed. Flowsheets and test and operating data from a number of gold processing operations incorporating gravity concentration treatment are presented.
