The majority of coke in Australia is made in by-product slot ovens at steelworks in Port Kembla, Newcastle and Whyalla. Most of the coals for these plants come from New South Wales but a regular proportion of Queensland coals may be introduced. The plants and the coals are reviewed in the paper.

The project management and construction plans adopted by Davy McKee for the Cooper Basin Liquids Project resulted in a project notable for the Relatively short duration from initiation of the design through to liquids production. Two locations were involved, one at Moomba in the far northeast of South Australia some 800 km from Adelaide, and the other at Port Bonython some 40 km from Whyalla. Total expenditure by the owners at the two sites was in excess of $600 million. Matters covered include organisation, transport, construction, industrial relations, project services and commissioning.

Coal exports are forecast to grow strongly, so that coal is likely to remain very important to Australia for the foreseeable future. However there is no sign that prices or profitability will rise of their own accord. Therefore the intense squeeze on costs will continue for the foreseeable future. This will mean lower manning, more outsourcing and probably an increasing rate of company attrition. As well, the political pressure from the greenhouse debate is only going to intensify and the pressure on the Federal Government after Kyoto is likely to be irresistible.

North Stradbroke Island is a large sand mass offshore from south east Queensland. Dredging for mineral sands commenced there in 1956 and the rehabilitation discussed in this paper was commenced in 1967. The frontal dunes have a long history of instability, with little vegetation prior to mining. Re-establishment of the naturally stable contours is essential, and their rehab- ilitation is described. The Golden Cross mine is a Joint Venture between Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited, as Manager, and Viking Mining Limited The mine is targeting Zero Lost Time Accidents as a goal. The Golden Cross operation produces gold and silver from both underground and open pit. The mine is based on an epithermal gold-silver deposit. Treatment of ore is on a campaign basis for each ore type (ie underground or open pit). Milling is conventional SAG Mill and Ball Mill grinding circuit followed by carbon in pulp recovery of gold and silver. All tailing materials are treated through the Cyanisorb process to reduce cyanide levels prior to being discharged into the tailings dam.

The increasing introduction of high capacity mechanical equipment into the coal mines of New South Wales following. tforld War II brought with it problems of roof support. Rapidly advancing headings in difficult country could not be supported with heavy, close,timbering due to the time involved in installation and the reduction of available' space for the movement of machines. _ The installation of low cost, space saving, rapidly installed roof supports became a necessity if the new mechanical equipment wa-s to be allowed to operate at maximum efficiency. As, a result of experience in the United States of America, the system of roof support using steel reinforcing bolts began to find increasing, popularity in the mechanised mines in this State. From the somewhat'crude methods of in- stallation adopted in some of the, early trials, the practice of roof bolting has advanced into a-highly technical operation, requiring care and skill to ensure optimum results.

As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300¦C. CuS, hich is not, an equilibrium product, is found in decoppering drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3pb2S2 formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by tirring in sulphur. Decoppering bismuth is thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of uBiS2. The Cu-Pb-S system is the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as ' resence of ternary sulphide or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

Epithermal gold-silver deposits occur in young volcanic terrains where post-mineral cover commonly impedes the search for mineralisation. At the Togi Project in Honshu, Japan, a complex mineralised system is largely covered by post mineral volcaniclastics. A combination of high resolution electrical resistivity surveying and detailed airphoto interpretation has, with close geological control, enabled synthesis of structural and alteration characteristics of the Togi geothermal system, in turn permitting ranking of the prospects for drill testing.

The Australian Mining Industry Council (A.M.I.C.) was established in 1967 as a body to co-ordinate the interests of the mining industry on a nation-wide basis. Its member- ship now embraces the great majority of mining groups in Australia. One of A.M.I.C.'s major continuing functions since its formation has been to work with Governments towards the enactment of more effective and efficient mining legislation. Yet, over the period, the,overall position, if anything has deteriorated. The main reason for this was that because of the rapid succession of what appeared to be quite separate problems during the period there was never sufficient time for Govern- ments to take stock of a situation before it would be changed by a new set of circumstances. By early 1973, the Council was certain that most of the various questions raised were really part of the one overall land use problem and its work in this area thus took a new emphasis from that time. In discussing the Council's involvement with Australian mining legislation over the last six years, the paper helps to clarify the present situation. Rock mechanics investigations have shown that some major slopes in the Panguna pit would be stable at angles in excess of 500 providing near-surface instability could be controlled. Excavation of final batters at angles between 55¦ and 60¦ is now being carried out using D10 dozers with berms at 45 to 60 m centres. A trial slope with berms at 90 m centres is planned. Shotcreting of weak zones combined with crest reinforcement, with rock anchors and dowels, is used to provide protection against erosion and toppling of the crests. Overall slopes excavated in this way are of the order of 10¦ steeper than slopes obtained by blast and shovel excavation.

During the development of Lorca tunnel project in the South-East of Spain, an in-site study has been done, with the purpose of obtaining the characteristics of the different lithological units through twenty-two parameters for the design of the tunnel excavation and support. In the paper both the different works developed and the different methods and criteria followed in the obtention of the parameters are described. The values of those parameters may be useful in similar cases. Also a summary-table of the parametrical characterization for the use in similar studies is given.

An improved ability to predict dilution for narrow vein deposits enables more accurate economic comparisons between mechanised longhole stoping and other narrow vein mining methods, as well as reducing uncertainty surrounding dilution estimates for deposits at the prefeasibility/ feasibility stage. This paper proposes narrow vein dilution prediction and minimisation strategies for both greenfield sites and operating mines, respectively. The narrow vein dilution method (NVD method) is a tool for more accurately predicting longhole narrow vein dilution. The method is based on a new concept called benchmark stoping width. Benchmark stoping width is based on probabilistic analysis of overbreak distributions from a typical longhole narrow vein mine. The premise for the NVD method is that dilution associated with longhole stoping can be predicted using the benchmark stoping width. In addition to dilution prediction, the NVD method also includes strategies for narrow vein dilution minimisation generally, including; filling, cablebolting, stress relaxation, extraction sequencing and blast overbreak.

Factors affecting the rate of arsenic removal from lead bullion during softening processes were studied. Very high rates of removal could be obtained under conditions of intense agitation and ready availability of oxidant. Reaction mechanisms were proposed to explain the sequences observed. Selective removal of arsenic with minimal loss of antimony from bullion was favoured by a low temperature Harris process and oxidizing via a caustic soda medium.
