Mount Tom Price Mine is peerless amongst Rio Tinto iron ore resources around the world. It has provided Hamersley Iron with premium quality, high lump yield haematite ore over the last four decades. The Brockman type bedded ore, containing bands of haematite and shale of varying thicknesses has been traditionally bulk mined to either high-grade or low-grade based on alumina cut-off grades. As open pit mining has progressed deeper into the orebody approaching the keels of the megastructure, increased structural complexity, chemical and physical variations in the ore, unfavourable ore presentation and reduced blending options have become an issue for grade control and may have serious impacts on product stockpiles. The grade blocks and boundaries must be accurately defined according to geological contacts and where identified, selective mining may be applied. Therefore in-pit geological mapping is the definite and ultimate guide to achieve target grades and grade predictions. Under this scenario, it is absolutely vital that the mine geology team ensures this geological knowledge is passed onto the related departments including mining crews as well as to the short- and long-term planners.

During recent years many investigators have suggested large spacing to burden ratios to improve the fragmentation obtained in blasting. In spite of these suggestions, most operators still use a conventional ratio of 1 to 2. From single hole longitudinal charge tests in laboratory, it is shown that burden controls the fragmentation. The burden for obtaining uniform fragmentation is smaller than the burden to obtain maximum breakage. Tests on two or three holes show that a larger spacing to burden ratio can be used for smaller burdens, but it is not possible for the larger burdens chosen to obtain maximum breakage. By using finite element analysis evidence is presented to show the effect of spacing and burden relationship on blasting results.

Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited has roasted a number of different zinc sulphide concentrates on its sinter machine which pro- duces zinc-lead sinter for an Imperial Smelting Furnace, and results have varied widely. The differences are considered to be functions of !concentrate particle size and reactivity. Amdel have used differential thermal analysis to examine these concentrates and two major effects have been found. Firstly, in concentrates 1containing small quantities of pyrite and chal- L [copyrite, heat is liberated at 400¦C to 650¦C [by oxidation of these two sulphides. Secondly, as particle size decreases, heat release from the oxidation of zinc sulphide commences at flower temperatures and rate of heat release In a sinter bed, the presence of some rite and chalcopyrite would help to heat the cc sulphide to ignition temperature in a orter time, while a finer concentrate would sult in roasting being completed more ickly. The variation in coal properties and the coal seam reduced level can be analysed using partial trend-surface analysis techniques. For the area studied seam reduced level and seam thickness data from the Bulli Coal yield trend-surfaces with a high coefficient of determination, since they have relatively small systematic local and random components in their overall variation. Sulphur content appears to have no significant re.gi_onal trend, and phosphorus content has a very weak regional trend. Other analytical variables have regional trends which are of intermediate strength. The strike-directions of.the statistically significant first degree! trend-surface are similar, sug-gesting.: that the variation of the several coal properties was controlled by a set of- related causes. Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.

Intermontane valleys form unusual features of compressive mountain belts both in the sharp topographic break they represent and in the strike-slip displacements often associated with the valleys. Such strike-slip motion seems hard to reconcile in the actively deforming Andes where reconstructions have indicated nearly perpendicular Cenozoic plate convergence. Detailed study of a part of the Argentine Andes between latitude 31-33¦S suggests that, although strike-slip displacements may have largely created a prominent intermontane valley system, no Holocene strike-slip displacements are observed amid the relatively active compressional deformation along the mountain belt flanks. New plate reconstructions, treating the Nazca plate as two microplates separated by fractures along the Nazca Ridge, predict large components of strike-slip motion between the South American and Nazca Plates for the period from 10 to 5 Ma. These reconstructed plate motions are consistent with strains derived from recent kinematic analyses of minor faults along the southeast margin of the Puna plateau and the general timing of tectonic phases in the Andes.

There are a number of current theories in relation to methane migration and emission into workings following underground coal mining activity and some controversies do exist. Mining causes changes in the stress regimes in surrounding strata and results in fracturing. Permeability increases and methane flows into workings under a pressure gradient. The effects of stress on permeability depend on the physical properties of the coal and surrounding strata. Methane emission also depends on the original methane content and the proportion which will be liberated. There are several methods for determining in situ methane content and desorption characteristics of coal samples and several methane prediction methods but clearly more research is necessary to achieve an adequate predictive model.

Bougainville's copper mine is located on the west slope of the Crown Prince Range on Bougainville. A high grade copper concentrate is produced for sale to overseas customers. Production planning which was originally based on pilot plant data has developed progressively since commissioning of the concentrator in 1972. Pilot plant data and mine sampling have been supplanted by the correlation of concentrator performance with ore sources, as the basis for short term planning. The influence of accurate sampling is reflected in 1. hourly shift control, 2. the daily milling statement, 3. the prediction of the characteristics of ore from various mine locations, 4. production reconciliation, and 5. the control of copper losses. The mechanical and electrical failures of the original sampling system emphasized the need for a reliable, automatic sampling facility. The development of a pneumatic drive mechanism, which has now been fully field tested, was undertaken.

South Bulli is the oldest and largest underground coal mine in Australia. Two longwall units are in operation and current production is 2.5 to 3 million tonnes of run of mine product per year with a workforce of 600. Prior to 1984 a workforce of around 1,200 produced 1.5 million tonnes. Advances in technology can. of course, account for some of this gain, but the changes made in the human resources area are also seen as playing a major role in South Bulli emerging as a reasonably stable operation.The human resources strategy adopted recognises the value of the workforce and is aimed at not only fostering cooperation as all levels, but also making employees aware of the direct contribution they can make to the success of the enterprise.

The geology and mineral deposits of the West Pilbara Goldfield are described and comparison is made with the Pilbara Goldfield,, In the West Pilbai'a Goldfield two adjacent environments are represented by a predominantly clastic succession and a predominantly volcanic succession. These two successions are lateral equivalents and lithologically they are similar to the classical successions at Warrdiwdbna and Mosquito Creek. How- ever, no evidence of a significant erosional break has been found. It is suggested that the Archaean rocks of: the Pilbara Block represent a single geosynclinal cycle, which culminated in orogenesis, within which-local disconformities have been developed in various places: and that the sub-Mosquito; Creek unconformity at Eastern Creek may be the most widespread of these disconformities, Widespread evidence of'preconsolidation movement, aid the intrusion of igneous rock into. unconsolidated sediment, suggest that tectonism and igneous activity began at a very early stage, This was localised along lines of fracture in an unidentified basement.,.Moveme.nt was primarily vertical and persisted into the older Proterozoic, The sediments were enriched in metal by vulcanicity, chemical sedimentation, and possibly detrit`1' contribution. Excavation are in progress for the building of tunnels of the waterworks in West Campania (Naples). The works afferent to part II envisage tunnelling through a miocenic clay formation over consolidated by two tunnels whose sections are respectively 50 and 10m2. Tunnel blasting is carried out by mechanical means. An excavator is used in the big tunnel, whereas in the small tunnel a roadheader machine is used for a short tract and a mechanized shield is used over a long stretch. The tunnel feature complex problems regarding stability. This is particularly so for the big tunnel whose face appears unstable. For this reason the clay on the face is sistematically bolted by means of 3-metre and 12-metre bolts. This prevent the use of a TBM for tunnel Excavation.

Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited has maintained an interest in the screening of iron ore fines (nominally -6 mm). However, no dry screening process had successfully demonstrated acceptable separating efficiencies at high tonnage rates, low operating costs, and mechanical reliability when screening iron ore fines (containing up to 6% free moisture) at sizes of around 1 to 2 mm. A new type of vibrating inclined screen has recently been developed which is claimed to have a non-blinding screening surface. It was decided to test a pilot scale unit in an existing pilot plant located at Hamersley's facilities at Dampier, Western Australia. The appropriate operating parameters such as vibration speed and feed rate were determined using one fine ore type. Mats with different aperture sizes, and different feed moisture contents were also tested. Trials were then conducted on various fine ore types to indicate the effect of different size distributions on separating efficiencies. The effects of feed moisture content were determined with these ore types, and a blend of lump (nominally -30+6 mm) and fines was tested to compare the screen's performance with that of the bottom deck of the minesite product Screens.

This paper firstly examines the pollu- tion potential of burning colliery wastes. A comparison of two means of estimating the pro- pensity for coal to combust spontaneously is next presented. The use of microwaves, as a new procedure, is discussed in detail, while a comparison of the results is made with a modi- fied adiabatic technique. A number of coals that are known to combust spontaneously was tested, as were some coals that are not consi- dered to have self heating potential.

The geographical and geological situations of the two mineral sand deposits currently being mined by Western Titanium Limited and the mining methods in use are briefly described. Production scheduling involving the ability to vary the proportions of the major minerals produced, together with maintaining a constant feed grade to the wet concentrator has been assuming greater importance to the company in recent years as the relative value of these minerals, due mainly to technological advances and environmental considerations, is subject to significant and rapid change. Manual calculation, even using a programmable calculator, became a trade-off between man hours and data usage. Schedules were updated infrequently and only a fraction of the avail- able data was used. In July 1975 a Data General NOVA 2/10 minicomputer with a 24K word core and three cassette drives was purchased. A suite of programmes was developed using BASIC to assist in production scheduling and these were opera- tional early in 1976.

Longwall advance mining is still the predaninant system of coal extraction in the U.K., contribiiting to sane 70 % of underground coal production. Gate roadways providing access to a longwall advancing coal face are maintained adjacent to a rib pillar under high strata abutment pressures and the caving rock mass. It is very difficult to realistically model such access roadways using mathematical or numerical techniques and hence, predict roadway closure. For the past 15 years, a research group in Nottingham University has been engaged in the study of longwall gate roadway stability using observation methods. Gate roadway deformations have been measured in 224 gate roadways and a comprehensive data base has been established. The paper describes the statistical analysis of this database and presents sane. predictive equations which will enable a forecast of the gate roadway closure to he made. Further field work to validate these equations. is described together with an error analysis. The results are very promising and indicate that it is possible to predict gate roadway closure in the U.K. within practical limits of Accuracy.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined- out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room- and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

The manufacture of steel from raw materials which have to be mined, transported and processed must affect the environment. Steelmaking, like almost every other stage of manufacture involves the unwanted production of dust and fume; thus a major part of the steel industry's effort to minimize changes to the environment is the collection, treatment and recycling of dust and fume to avoid pollution of the atmosphere and waterways. The paper describes how this achieved in the various steelmaking processes and shows the diversity of problems-and their solutions in this context. Particular emphasis is, given to basic oxygen steelmaking.

Sintering of lead and zinc concentrates is practised by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited to provide both desuiphurised lump sinter feed, for simultaneous reduction to zinc and lead in the Imperial Smelting Process blast furnace, and sulphur dioxide gas for sulphuric acid manufacture. From November, 1969 a 20 percent increase in production rate has been obtained through improvements in operating technique. A gradual increase in bed permeability was achieved by modifications to the feed mix conditioning equipment and by improving moisture control. However advantage could not be taken of the higher permeability to increase sulphur elimination because the hardness of the lump sinter decreased. Higher throughput, better quality sinter and more stable sintering conditions were however made possible by simultaneously: 1. reducing segregation and compaction in the sinter bed, by narrowing the discharge opening of the main layer feed hopper, 2. reducing the sizing of sinter returns to give a closer size spectrum of particles in the feed mix, and 3. increasing the sulphide sulphur content of the feed mix to give higher bed Temperatures.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. With the value of energy increasing thi; second drawback is gaining importance so th.u several mines in Europe and North America ;it,, now installing systems to recover the methane in a useful form. This case study describes various aspects of establishing a laboratory facility for testing chemically-cemented fill materials. The applicability of data obtained from such a facility related to mine conditions depends on many factors: kind of data, type of testing facility, sample parameters (composition, geometry, size, etc.). The equipment employed must be adaptable, to accommodate variations in sample size and properties. The design, construction and operation of the testing facility is described, and its application to fill samples prepared from sulphides and oxides both chemically and naturally cemented. The present system was selected following an extensive study of equipment available for testing materials in the fields of rock mechanics and construction materials. The strength testing' facility incorporates Linear Variable Differential Transformers for monitoring both lateral and axial displacements during sample compression. The output from these and from other related instrumentation can be recorded or fed direct to a computer, enabling stress-strain data to be printed out while the test is in progress. Also described are controlled environment curing facilities which allow samples to be cured or weathered under different temperature or humidity conditions to simulate long-term ageing and in place conditions.
