Acupan is considered to be an intrusive centre as several igneous phases have been emplaced in the vicinity of the mine over the past 8 Ma. They include the Lucbuban gabbro, Virac granodiorite, Ampucao dacite porphyry (ADP), Hartwell plug, Itogon plug and the multi-phase Balatoc diatreme. These intrusives have high-K calc-alkaline affinities and are grouped together as the Virac Complex.Porphyry-style mineralisation formed during the final crystallization of the ADP in the late Pliocene, with the deposition of two vein stages from high-temperature hypersaline magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. There is a vast amount of geotechnical data, which can be obtained during exploration programs at new and existing mine sites. Additional information on the performance of the in-situ rock mass can be obtained from bore cores, which are usually only geologically logged and then stored. A computer based data management system for storage and retrieval of geotechnical data has been developed to access and manipulate such data.

The Victorian State Government recognises that the extensive brown coal deposits in Victoria are one of the State's key competitive strengths for economic development. The unique properties of the coal, together with the ease of open cut mining, make it suitable for a variety of new applications. Research and development activities are centred around applications which take advantage of the natural attributes and unique properties of the coal. The high reactivity and low ash content of the coal led to its selection for the Japanese brown coal liquefaction pilot plant currently operating in the Latrobe Valley, with support from the Victorian Government and the Coal Corporation of Victoria. Research and development of new brown coal based products together with many other areas of applied and fundamental research are being conducted in Victoria by Government research organisations, tertiary insti- tutions and private industry, with the objective of establishing new indus- trial developments based on Victoria's vast brown coal resource.

The magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., occur in decomposed serpentine rock below a soil. and alluvial cover. They show considerable variation in both quality and depth which greatly hampers mining operations. Seismic refraction techniques afford methods of conducting detailed and reconnaissance surveys which yield a depth and velocity analysis of the serpentine/magnesite refractor. The measured seismic velocities may be used as an index of the presence and quality of the deposits. The Seismic Timer which was used in the test surveys is a simplified seismograph which makes use of seismic reciprocity by replacing the conventional seismic shotpoints with geophone stations and the conventional geophone stations with impact points of a sledge hammer. Thi,s enables the use of detailed seismic refraction techniques which yield the depth and velocity analysis of the refractor.INTRODUCTIONThe magnesite deposits near Young, N.S.W., were produced by a process of leaching and enrichment of magnesium in serpentine rock. The magnesite occurs in nodular form emplaced in decomposed rock at shallow depths below soil and alluvium. The depth ranges from close to the surface down to some tens of feet. The deposits are patchy and show considerable variation in both quality and depth, giving riseto considerable difficulties in mining operations.Due to the thorough leaching of the surface material, geochemical tests carried out so far have not proved satisfactory for locating the pockets of magnesite enrichment.It was decided to test the application of detailed shallow seismic refraction methods to the investigation of both the depth and quality of the deposits. At the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines, the largest diluent of the copper concentrate is liberated fine pyrite. Laboratory flotation tests carried out as a function of grind and flotation Eh in combination with surface analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) have identified the major mechanisms of iron sulphide flotation. It was found that a significant proportion of the iron sulphide minerals had surface coverages of graphitic carbon, sufficient to impart moderate hydrophobicity in the absence of collector. A smaller, but economically significant proportion of chalcopyrite was also affected by the graphitic carbon coating. Two methods were tested to reduce the impact of the natural floatability of the iron sulphides on concentrate grades. 1. Depression through the use of organic depressants. 2. Preflotation to remove the "naturally hydrophobic" iron sulphides (flotation independant of Eh ) prior to chalcopyrite flotation. Preflotation was tested at the pilot plant scale. It was found that the amount of chalcopyrite reporting to the preflotation rougher concentrate could be minimised through flotation at a mildly reducing Eh by the use of nitrogen as the flotation gas to maintain the low Eh conditions resulting from grinding. The preflotation rougher concentrate was upgraded to an iron sulphide concentrate or a low grade copper concentrate.

The extraction of the values from gold bearing clay or clayey ores has always presented difficulties. A description of the successful operation of a mill working on material of this nature is here given in the hope that it will be of interest to mining engineers and metallurgists, particularly as the ore body referred to has been worked out. The methods finally adopted were evolved at the mill after the failure of 3: plant specially designed in England and sent out to New Guinea to cope with the clay by the old principle of calcining to brick followed by crushing and cyanidation. A description is given of the direct cyanidation of run of mine ore in '90 ton vats; which was finally adopted after a great deal of study and experiment. Mention is also made of the method of removing overburden in the open cut and the mining and transport of the ore from the open cut to the mill. The purpose of the paper is to record these matters while the information is still available. . .DESCRIPTION OF THE ORE BODYThe values occurred in a flat-lying lode which had slipped about half a mile down the mountain side and had come to rest in the nearly horizontal position in which it was found and worked. The thickness of the deposit varied from a maximum of about 25 ft. at the northern end to about 10 ft. at the southern end. The ore body was capped with an overburden of decomposed breccia and porphyry of variable thickness the maximum being about 65 ft. Geomembrane (GMB) liners are being used more frequently for the storage or capping of mine waste due to stricter regulatory requirements relating to environmental protection. The longevity of any liner system will be a function of environmental conditions, design (including materials selection), construction and condition monitoring during operations or closure. Based on experience and case studies, this paper presents a review, from design to handover, of some of the smaller and often overlooked details that can have significant impacts on the performance of the GMB and the project overall.The topics covered will include approaches to selecting and testing GMBs to ensure they are suitable. In the humid, subtropical climatic conditions, typical of Papua New Guinean high-lands, auriferous carbonate-quartz lodes and stockwork veins of the Upper Ridges mine at Wau, have weathered in situ forming manganese dioxide-quartz wad flatmakes and veins. Vein assemblages and sulphidized host breccia have been chemically weathered to 20-25m depth, and microscopic grains of electrum (550-600 fine) formerly enclosed in carbonate, sulphide and quartz have dissolved in the oxidizing alkaline fluid. Coarse secondary electrum, crystalline and dendritic, is concentrated by manganese dioxide and at the base of chemical weathering. Fineness is unchanged, eliminating the possibility of gold and silver migration as a chloride complex. Experimental tests on the stability of thiosulphate, and its ability to dissolve gold and silver from colloid, crystal and synthetic alloy confirm that secondary electrum at Upper Ridges is most compatible with precipitation from (Au,Ag)(S203)23-; a complex readily destabilized in the presence of MnO., or with decreasing Eh.

In 2003, NEWMONT MINING CORPORATION, the worldÆs largest gold producer, set out to prove that High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology is sufficiently robust and reliable to be considered for the treatment of hard rock gold ores. In collaboration with POLYSIUS, a significant trial was conducted and 127 600 tonnes processed, successfully proving the HPGR capabilities on the Lone Tree Mine, Nevada ore û one of the most competent and abrasive ores in the industry. The success has led a number of mining companies to consider HPGRs for the comminution of gold and copper ores.

The products from beneficiation present themselves at opposite ends of the spectrum, and yet numerous synergies exist in the preparation of coking coal and hematite iron ore products for their common export markets. Returning to the coal side of the business with Anglo Coal following a five-year sojourn in WA with Hamersley Iron, has provided the opportunity for comparing and contrasting some of the key synergies of the supply chains of both bulk commodities.Comparisons include consideration of things like: resource evaluation (especially quality aspects), run-of-mine handling and preparation, beneficiation, product handling and transportation, quality assurance and customer awareness, value-in-use and impacts on iron and steelmaking, and supply chain environmental aspects.Inherent within these are several other notable contrasts including: æseamsÆ and æorebodiesÆ, rocks and minerals, rejects and tailings, oxidation and weathering, suppliers and users, and marketing and purchasing, to name but a few.This paper covers some of the more interesting of these synergies and raises some potential opportunities for sharing knowledge and innovation between the two areas of activity in the future.

The adsorption mechanism of three different O,OÆ-di-alkyl-dithiophosphate (dtp) collectors, K[S2P(OR)2] with R = Et, i-Bu and i-Amyl, on the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy. The morphology changes on the conditioned Cu2S surfaces, in the collector concentration range 0.1 - 10 mM, were also monitored with scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to assign Cu(I)-dtp species on the surface of Cu2S, the corresponding bulk Cu(I)-dtp compounds, which are clusters of the monovalent copper containing either Cu6(antiprismatic) or Cu8(cubic) cores, were synthesised, and characterised by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and static 65Cu NMR. Further investigations on the crystal habits of the bulk systems were carried out by powder x-ray diffraction and SEM. A comparative analysis of the 31P chemical shift and chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) data estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline bulk Cu(I) dialkyldithiophosphate complexes was used for assigning the 31P resonance lines in the NMR spectra of the collector treated Cu2S powder samples. The species formed on the synthetic Cu2S surfaces were assigned to polycrystalline phases of: Cu6L6 with L = Et2dtpû, Cu6L6 and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Bu2dtpû, and Cu8L6(S) with L = i-Amyl2dtpû. A heterophase autocatalytic step process of both formation and growth of solid CuxLy (L = R2dtp, x = 6 or 8 and y = 6) complexes on the collector treated Cu2S surface is proposed. A possible role of the oxidised form of dithiophosphate collectors, bis[di-alkyl-thiophosphoryl]-disulfane (disulfide), is discussed in terms of a specific self-redox reaction. The second order quadrupolar lineshapes in 65Cu NMR spectra were simulated and the interaction parameters, CQ and hQ, for the bulk dialkyldithiophosphato-copper(I) complexes were obtained.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike subdistrict, there are seven major deposits; Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the subdistrict are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Bamck Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post, and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont Property.

Boom time in the mining industry has presented mill operators with several unique challenges including the need for increased throughput while being constrained by a shortage of skilled labour and aging capital equipment. New instrumentation technology that provides reduced installation costs; no process down time for installation; and reduced maintenance costs and labour requirements; has been introduced to address the labour situation while maintaining production. This new tech- nology also enabled more accurate and reliable process measurements thus providing the capability for operators to maximise throughput with their existing capital equipment. This passive SONAR based technology can accurately measure the volumetric flow rate of single phase and multiphase fluids as well as the amount of air entrained within slurries. This is accomplished in a non-invasive manner. This paper will describe the principle of operation as well as the application of the technology to critical minerals processing applications. Included will be operational examples comparing the SONAR measurement performance to traditional measurement techniques. These examples will include hydrocylone feed flow, flotation concentrate flow, and slurry streams containing magnetic ores. Actual plant data will be presented as well as a discussion on the operational advantages such a measurement capability.Also described will be the power of the technology platform to provide novel process monitoring and control capabilities such as pipeline sand-out prevention and pipeline acoustic monitoring.

Don Hausen was a pioneer in the field of quantitative mineralogy. Methodology that he developed at Newmont almost 40 years ago is still employed today, only the technology has advanced. Petrographic methods were stressed with an emphasis on alteration, mineralisation and paragenesis. Methodologies employed by Don on the Carlin deposit were applied to developing the Carlin Trend by helping to work out lithology and structure, which ultimately led to the discovery of deep high-grade deposits. Quantitative methods used by Don on San Manuel, Copper Creek and Superior, Arizona were applied to the development of the Batu Hijau Deposit in Indonesia. Advancements in technology since DonÆs time have made the mineralogist much more efficient. Manual measurement of peak heights off of strip charts for semiquantitative XRD has been replaced by software that does Rietveld refinement and whole pattern fitting. Hand contouring of XRD data has been replaced by digitised data incorporated into geologic models. Optical point counting, which would take a dayÆs work to process 1000 points, has been replaced by automated SEM methods where 20 000 points are possible in an hour. The use of the optical microscope remains relatively unchanged, and still remains as Don emphasised the æeyesÆ of mineral exploration. However, the information can be relayed much more quickly with digital image capture and electronic data transfer. Don insisted on becoming involved in projects at the grassroots level and supporting the project through mine closure. This made the mineralogist a liaison between exploration geologists, mine geologists, metallurgists and mine engineers. The methodology that Don helped develop continues to provide invaluable support to Newmont geologists and metallurgists worldwide today.

The use of images to determine blast fragmentation is the only feasible technique when one does not want to disturb the production cycle. However, three major problems exist with the use of images. The first is determining real size from a two-dimensional particle, the second is estimating the fines which are missing due to image resolution and particle size range, and the third is proper sampling such that a statistical probability can be calculated for the distribution. Once these problems are resolved, the tedious process of digitizing images by hand may be automated. This paper describes the present techniques used at the JKMRC to "size" blast fragmentation, estimate the missing fines using the Rosin-Rammler equation, determine the sampling error using Gy's sampling equations, and extract the particles from an image using an IBM-AT computer.

The specification for tender nominated the requirements for ore hoisting and servicing; this showed that one common duty winder could be selected. Foliowing the design of the shaft layout, the merits of fixed or rope guides were compared and the latter selected.The specification called for the supply and installation of the complete hoisting system. Construction of the winder tower and shaft bottom steel work had to proceed while mine development was in progress using the sinking winder and headframe. Guide ropes, winder ropes, and the sky shaft were installed in the shortest possible time, and as the shaft was not equipped with ladder-ways, a second means of access had to be provided.Very few problems were encountered witll the commissioning of the winder, and in the first 2 years of operation the only significant modification was to the circuitry associated witll the moving access platforms.Hoist rope tension checking and adjustment are simple, and non-destructive testing has shown no deterioration of these ropes. The operation of the balance ropes has been very satisfactory but cleaning presented problems in the early stages. Guide ropes have been trouble free and require minimum attention.Normal wear on the PVC rope groove inserts on the winder drum has been negligible.Since the commissioning on fully automatic ·control, the winder has operated with very few, minor delays.

The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after KalgoorlieÆs Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is typically both coarse grained and erratically distributed.

The PACMANUS and Jade deposits are two active hydrothermal fields that are forming massive sulfide deposits at the Pacific rim margin. Both are associated with felsic submarine volcanic rocks and both occur in back-arc settings. However, PACMANUS is associated with almost sediment-free dacites and lies on the crest of a volcanic ridge, whereas Jade occurs in a heavily-sedimented tectonic depression associated with a basement of pumiceous rhyolite. The PACMANUS deposit is richer in Cu and Au, and Jade in Pb. Zinc, Ag, As and Sb contents are similar. Sulfide textures at PACMANUS suggest formation of Cu and Zn sulfides by simultaneous double-diffusion involving inwards-moving seawater mixing with outwards-moving hydrothermal fluid. By contrast, at Jade there is a more complex history of formation where initial growth of barite on the sediment surface, probably associated with microbial activity, formed an impervious cap which trapped higher temperature hydrothermal solutions.

Filters are used in water treatment and hydrometallurgical process plants for objectives such as generating a dry spadable solid, pumpable high density slurry or high purity filtrate. The priority objective of every polishing filter, sometimes also termed clarifying filters is high purity filtrate and these are found in many diverse industries and even different applications within the same industry.To generate a high purity filtrate, process designers have the choice of many different polishing filter products, but in reality very few polishing filters are based on fundamentally different filtering concepts.This paper reviews the technology merits of well-known and the more recently developed polishing filter products and aims to assist metallurgists and engineers with the selection of an appropriate polishing filtration technology for pregnant liquor filtration and other process applications, plus a guide to best practice.CITATION:Shipard, S, 2013.
