The maximum gas emission into underground workings can be predicted by the use of established methods which have world wide recognition. Changes in gas emission and the influence of the gas and geological environments during longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, were found.to be a typical. The relationship between longwall mining and gassy conditions is found to vary from the European experience because of the different mining and geological conditions encountered, and the higher productivity achieved, by single longwall panels in Australia.

Flotation columns represent an important addition to flotation practice. Columns have largely replaced. conventional machines in molybdenum cleaning in Canada. Columns have been successfully tested on bulk copper/molybdenum cleaning at Gibraltar Mines Ltd. A rougher cleaner/scavenger cleanercombination was shown to be capable of giving higher grades and recoveries compared with three stages of conventional cleaning. A control strategy for the columns has been developed. An interaction between gas hgldup and wash water rate has been exploited to control performance.

This paper describes how Western Mining Corporation uses sophisticated diesel equipment in mining of shallow flat dipping narrow ore- bodies in the Otter Juan area. Though in most cases the stoping method chosen relies on hand held conventional equip- ment, the 'ore handling systems have been designed to allow for a relatively high degree of mechanization. The use of diesel loaders, trucks along with three boom jumbos is described. A single one in nine decline driven as the means of access to the various ore surfaces at Otter/Juan resulted in the first ore being produced first 15 weeks after the first round was fired in the Ore-Decline. Now, three years later, the.mine is in full production, and in 1971/72 produced 392,000 dry tonnes of high grade Nickel Ore.

Vitrokele technology is a resin process that can be applied in gold plants to reduce both capital and operating costs. The Vitrokele resin can be used for both precious metal recovery and for recovering free and combined cyanide from effluent streams. Vitrokele resin has been extensively tested at pilot plant level and is now applied successfully at a commercial heap leach facility in Zimbabwe where it is used in place of activated carbon for recovery of gold from pregnant leach solution. Significant capital cost savings were achieved by installation of a resin plant instead of a conventional carbon adsorption plant. Operation to-date has not seen any significant physical or chemical degradation of the resin either in terms of adsorption capacity/kinetics or physical appearance/size. This gold recovery process is equally applicable to slurry streams where it would be implemented in stirred tanks with interstage screens in a similar manner to a conventional carbon adsorption plant.

Currently there is considerable interest in the production of DRI in Western Australia to take advantage of intense interest from the Asian market. Most DRI is produced using gas-based processes and is used as a feedstock in electric arc steel furnaces, otherwise known as mini-mills. This paper critically examines the technical and economic issues of various gas-based DR processes available today and recommends the most effective and attractive processes suitable for Western Australian iron ores.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. This paper is an appraisal of the application of optical-mechanical-scanners operating in the non-photographic infrared wavelengths (3-5 and 8-14 micrometres) to mineral exploration in Australia. Pundamental principles of the operation of airborne scanners and their data output, thermal infrared (IR) imagery, are summarized. It is contended that thermal IR imagery often depicts the distribution of electromagnetic radiation emitted from earth surface materials better than aerial photographic techniques because optical-mechanical-scanners sample wavebands which straddle the wavelength peak of earth surface emission. To illustrate the geological features which such scanners can depict, reference is made to thermal IR imagery of a number of areas in Australia where the technique has been applied for exploration purposes. The art of flotation may be divided into two distinct branches, namely:-1. Collective flotation.2. Selective flotation.(1) Collective flotation is applied when all the valuable minerals in an ore are required in one concentrate, leaving ,only gangue minerals in the tailing. The method is applicable, for instance, to such ores as auriferous copper sulphides associated with gangue minerals only, or to silver lead ores low enough in zinc and other valuable minerals.(2) Selective flotation is applied when there are present in an ore two or more valuable sulphides, which cannot be subsequently efficiently treated unless they are separated from one another as well as from the gangue. For example, a silver-Iead-zinc ore, or a copper-gold-iron ore; where the iron is not required with the copper gold concentrate.In order to make these operations practicable chemical reagents have been developed, having power to exert definite actions on the various minerals when brought into contact with them in a water pulp.COLLECTIVE FLOTATION.In order to bring about collective flotation it is generally necessary to add to the pulp a frothing agent and an activator or activators for all the minerals which it is desired to float.SELECTIVE FLOTATION.The object of selective flotation is to activate the mineral which is to be floated, and at the same time to prevent all other minerals from floating.

The Tregoora Gold Project is centred around the old Mitchell River Antimony Field located 100 kilometres west-northwest of Cairns, North Queensland. The project is currently the subject of a joint venture between Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. and Hawk Investments Limited.Historical BackgroundThe Tregoora area was first prospected for antimony and gold around 1890. During the periods 1905 to 1914 and 1937 and 1944 approximately 100 tonnes of antimony and an unknown quantity of gold were won from a number of small mines the principal one being the "Retina". A strong increase in the demand for antimony in the early 1970's resulted in renewed exploration activity in the region and the re-development of the Retina Mine. Despite the intermittent interest in the region for antimony it was not until 1984 that the potential of the area for hosting gold resources was realised with the delineation by Strategic Minerals Corporation N.L. of a significant gold deposit now referred to as the Black Knight.

Graham Hall and V. M. Cottle (Rosebery, Tas.) : In their paper on "The Mineralized Rift Valleys of Tasmania", Campana, Dickinson, King and Matheson have summarized a wealth of data from many sources. In proposing the new concept of a rift valley structure, they claim to have found a new guide to regional ore control and distribution in North-west Tasmania.Although the authors acknowledge suggestions made by us prior to publication of the pa:per, we are still at variance with their conclusions. We are not convinced that a rift valley structure exist~d when the Ordovician conglomerate was deposited. We are unable to find evidence for Cambrian deposition in a rift valley or reason to project the structure to embrace Hercules, Rosebery, and "possibly" Mt Bischoff.That the Great Lyell Fault (the authors' Owen Rift Fault) is a promising place to look for ore is not a new idea, but the existence of important ore deposits away from the structure reveals its inability to provide an adequate explanation of regional mineral distribution. A well-known structure that does have an influence on ore deposition is not discussed by the authors.STRUCTURAL CONSIDERATIONSThe great thickness of coarse unsorted Ordovician conglomerate lying in an elongate but narrow belt of country is presented as evidence of its deposition centrally within a rift valley, the position-of which is now said to be outlined by resistant slabs of the conglomerate. The marginal shears of the rift are said to show up well along the edges of the conglomerate.

The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite,Fel_oS has been studied experimentally in the temperaturerange 200 DC to 760 DC. Nickel from both aqueous solutionsand salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphide latticewith ,an accompanying rel~ase of iron into the solution ormelt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion intothe sulphide lattice have been followed ,by opticalmicroscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser.Some geological consequences of this phenomenonaffecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associatedwith nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

Any project carries a number of challenges and risks. Inappropriate design, poor project management, time, industrial disputation and capital over runs are all areas which can impact on a project cash flows and return on investment. In the resource Industry you have the added complexity and risk of geology which is difficult to predict and sometimes unforgiving. The Dartbrook Mine was designed and constructed as a high output longwall mine and has overcome a number of hurdles to produce over 2.3 million tonnes for the first year of operation. A number of problems were encountered during construction which resulted in the inseam development being delayed for six months. Dartbrook people have demonstrated they can manage adversity and produce world class results. The mine has been through a very steep learning curve during 1997 and with this experience behind the mine is now producing at an annualised rate of 3.4 MTPA.

Typical rehabilitation programmes for spoil piles and waste dumps in open cut coal mines involve the spreading of topsoil to assist vegetation growth. In the early years of rehabilitation before a protective vegetation cover has been established, this topsoil is susceptible to erosion during rainfall events. Since the long term success of rehabil- itation procedures is sensitive to adequate topsoil maintenance and since, on many mine sites, topsoil is a scarce resource, erosion losses of topsoil (particularly once fert- ilised) can severely restrict rehabilitation Measures.

"The focus of this paper is on measuring the composition to improve mill feed quality to minimise the processing of waste, optimise process performance, reduce processing costs and minimise the generation of tailings.Technologies used since the 1990s in the cement and coal industries for measuring conveyed materials have been operationally proven and effectively derisked. Despite this the acceptance by the minerals industry has been very slow except in iron ore. Real-time penetrative full stream measurement using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) for multielemental analysis and microwave transmission for real-time moisture analysis provide representative, tonnage weighted dry weight per cent results on a minute by minute basis. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering/segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. The technologies are explained and performance examples given. The benefits derived from real-time compositional analysis are predicated upon a good understanding of deposit geology, mineralogical associations, waste to ore interfaces, amenability to mining, metallurgical processes and downstream customer requirements. Processing may include basic preparation in the case of direct shipping ores, minor beneficiation using simple upgrading methods, or concentration using more complex processing systems such as flotation, leaching or many others. The value of real-time data from primary crushed conveyed flows, using analysis of increments smaller than a single haul truck’s load, is very beneficial in process plants aiming to reduce waste processing, increasing feed grades and increasing metal recoveries. Grade variability can be utilised to divert conveyed increments of waste, direct shipping ore (DSO) quality material bypassing beneficiation, and subeconomic material amenable to upgrading diverted for further preconcentration by particle separation (sorting, heavy medium etc). Paybacks of a few months have been commonly achieved where the real-time technologies have been applied in the minerals sector. Mining operations must become more predictable to overcome the volatility that has characterised the mining industry. Comparisons of production against predictions will become more consistent as mining operations merge and expand, as personnel move from site to site, and as public reporting of reconciliations becomes more prevalent. More consistent approaches are already being seen in the industry using the terminology used in this paper and elsewhere.Examples are provided that show how use of the waterfall chart as a reconciliation management tool can provide objective analysis to improve practices.Geometallurgical modelling is becoming more useful and will continue to do so as we move from a few bulk samples to better interpretation of material properties from geological mapping and drill sampling. Reconciliation has evolved to the stage where predictions of geometallurgical properties to optimise mill performance, and of geotechnical properties derived from better 3D geological models, should also be reconciled.CITATION:Shaw, W J, 2014. Two major types of economic secondary iron ores occur in the banded iron formation (BIF)-rich Hamersley Province of the Pilbara, Western Australia:dominant BIF-hosted bedded iron deposits (BID)detrital ore deposits (DID sensu lato), which are mainly hosted in the three province-wide Cenozoic sequences that include coeval non-ore sediments and comprise:a. the major Miocene, fluvial channel iron deposits (CID)b. the lesser Eocene and Pliocene detrital iron deposits (DID sensu stricto).Striking differences exist between the massive CID resources and the much smaller underlying and overlying DID. CID are essentially riverine alluvial ooidal rocks with abundant small fossil wood fragments and variable iron peloids, but with only extremely rare recognisable lithic remnants. The original matrix is typically ramifying layered goethite. Eocene DID are mainly alluvial with minor pisoids, whereas Pliocene–Quaternary DID are dominantly coarse colluvial gravels, both derived from and largely retaining the original textures of BID, hard cap or variably ferruginised surface BIF. The colluvial DID matrix is typically ferroan-aluminous soil, resulting in canga where replaced by goethite, which may be dehydrated to hematite by exposure. The Cenozoic deposits occur in two dominant geomorphological environments: the southern Marra Mamba to Brockman Iron Formation strike valleys containing all three Cenozoic sequences and the much later northern Brockman Iron Formation plateau valleys that include only the Miocene and Pliocene sequences. The Cenozoic detritals formed in different climatic regimes, with an extended dry period forming a prominent province-wide dehydrated carapace on the Eocene DID. The Miocene ‘optimum’ followed with its thick scrub-covered deep regolith that produced the fossil wood-rich CID and was succeeded by the arid cool period of the Oakover limestone/calcrete. A major renewal of exposure and erosion in the Pliocene resulted in the extensive iron gravels of the Pliocene–Quaternary.CITATION:Morris, R C, 2015. "The Jaguar concentrator, 60 km north of Leonora, Western Australia (WA), consists of a standard closed circuit semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball mill producing a float feed of approximately 60 micron at 70 t/h. Following comminution, separate copper and zinc concentrates are produced by differential flotation. These concentrates are subsequently dewatered by thickening and then filtration.Separate audits of the Jaguar Operation’s copper and zinc concentrate thickeners were conducted to evaluate their performance, following occasions where site personnel had identified unnecessary loss of copper and zinc concentrate to the thickener overflow. The feedwells were identified as the source of the observed problems due to the following issues with their design/duty:lack of retention time in the feedwell as current design is completely opennot conducive to effective mixing required for efficient flocculationdiameter of the zinc concentrate thickener feedwell was undersize for its duty.To improve the performance of the thickeners, it is planned to replace both concentrate thickener feedwells with a high rate design for their respective duties in February 2016. The audits also identified that the feed system requires modifications with particular importance placed on minimising air entrainment of slurry into the thickener feedwell. Minimisation of air entrainment is hoped to be achieved by providing constant head pressure through installation of weir arrangements in the feedboxes and redirecting each feed pipe so that it feeds tangentially into the feedwell. In addition, improvements to the control philosophy of both thickeners will be made with the installation of an ultrasonic bed level probe and bed mass sensor, in order to make real-time adjustments to the underflow pump speed to maintain steady state operation.Following the feedwell replacement and modifications to both thickeners it is expected that losses of recovered copper and zinc will decrease to undetectable levels. Subsequently it is anticipated that a more consistent, homogenous underflow can be produced for downstream filtration.Citation:Thompson, M, 2016. Coal mining is recognised globally as a hazardous activity, and as a result operates under high levels of regulatory and public scrutiny while managing a workforce operating in a high-risk environment. Mining companies have developed sophisticated risk assessment procedures, management systems and personnel competency requirements that facilitate the safety and health of employees, and Australia is a world leader in coal mining safety and health.RISKGATE is an Australian Coal Association Research Program funded online platform that delivers broad cross-industry knowledge about current practice in the identification, assessment and management of coal mining risk. Centennial Coal has engaged with the RISKGATE program, managed by the University of Queensland’s Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre, since its inception in 2010, and contributed topic experts to many modules, including underground topics within the geological and geotechnical domain (strata underground, outburst, coal bumps and bursts, and inrush).In 2013, Centennial Coal experienced significant unexpected strata failure at the Mandalong mine without any personal injury or fatality. This paper presents a case study in the application of RISKGATE to management of this unwanted event, the steps that were implemented, the information that was sourced and the contribution that RISKGATE made to the final outcomes. "This paper discusses the successful use of bituminous geomembranes (BGMs) in mining applications since their development in 1974. It explains and illustrates the structure of a BGM composite, which is a geomembrane manufactured by impregnating a polyester geotextile with a compound of bitumen, elastomer and filler. Examples of applications of BGMs in the mining industry are also presented in the following contexts.Storage of solid waste: storage of mining waste at mines in Canada heap leach pads in France, Peru, Chile and Turkey at the base of a mining waste landfill in Brazil capping of solid mining waste in Chile and Canada temporary capping of mining stockpiles in Australia (with possible reuse of the BGM for other works).Examples of the application of BGMs for the storage of liquid waste in mining containment reservoirs in Canada, Guatemala and Peru will also be given.For each example given, reasons are supplied that supported the choice of BGMs by the clients and consultants, drawn from the following advantages of the BGM:BGMs have excellent puncture strength, due to the internal polyester reinforcement, as well as excellent ultraviolet resistance. This often eliminates the need for a cushion geotextile or cover soil over the BGM.BGMs have a very long life expectancy, in excess of 300 years, in subsoil conditions (Breul et al, 2004).BGMs can be installed in very harsh climatic conditions. They are suitable for high wind environments as their heavy mass per square metre makes them resistant to wind uplift. The low coefficient of thermal expansion means that BGMs are suitable for installation in mines where very low or very high temperatures are expected. This reduces construction delays and allows for a quicker use of the mining facility.The fact that the BGM can be installed by the mine’s own workforce, after appropriate training from the BGM manufacturer, allows for a more flexible construction sequence on the mine.Ability of the BGM to connect to other materials such as concrete, steel, rock and other geomembranes that may be on the mine site.The technical advantages of a BGM enabled the engineering consultants to prepare solutions for their mining clients that had a lower environmental risk, had a faster completion schedule and were overall a cheaper option than with a polymeric geomembrane.CITATION:Breul, B and McIlwraith, R, 2015.
