Ore samples from the South, Central and North ore-bodies of the King Cassilis Mine, near Omeo, Victoria, were broken and transported to Melbourne for experimental metallurgical treatment. A microscopical examination of individual unoxidised specimens, selected from these samples, was undertaken in order to thro'w as much light as possible on the occurrence of the gold which forms the valuable economic mineral in the ore.The following descriptions are the outcome' of this examination and show that very minute particles of free gold are mechanically associated with the sulphides. While the gold may be separated from the transparent gangue minerals by the flotation of the sulphides, the, actual size of the particles indicates that it is impossible to separate all the gold from the sulphides by grinding the ore to pass through a screen of 200 mesh in which the average width of the holes is 0.063 mm. An improved method of sample recovery for use with rotary percussion drilling has been developed. Cuttings can be recovered continuously from either dry or wet drilling, and the recovery under dry conditions is seldom below 99% of the cuttings brought to the surface by the rig. The system is designed for use with top drive drilling rigs using flush-jointed drill rods. The key feature of the system is a self-aligning mechanical seal around the drill rods. The sealing unit is removably fixed to a collar section of cas ing. the cuttings are recovered in a plastic bag attached to the bottom outlet of a cyclone. A valve at the bottom of the cyclone permits the cuttings representing various depths to I,e recovered separately for examination eind 0(iclysis. The thermal conductivity of slag is critical for the efficiency of high temperature metallurgical processes such as the smelting reduction of ferroalloys, the ladle refining and the continuous casting mold flux in steelmaking. Experimental determination of slag’s thermal conductivity is fraught with challenges, as seen in yielding data for the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO system that are often inconsistent and widely dispersed. In molten slags of this system, thermal transport occurs via phonons within the network structure. To quantitatively describe thermal conductivity based on the microstructure, hightemperature Raman spectroscopy was employed to measure the silicate tetrahedra Qi (i = 0, 1, 2, 3), with Q4 species inferred from mass balance. This study also integrated molecular dynamics simulations to provide a fundamental understanding of the microstructure units distributions. Machine learning algorithms, especially deep neural networks, were applied to establish the relationship between slag composition and the configuration of tetrahedra. The thermal conductivities were then connected with silicate tetrahedra Qi using an Arrhenius-type formalism. This study sets the stage for extending our findings to more complex, multicomponent slags, enhancing their practical application in industrial processes.

The basic parameters causing outbursts are rock pressure, gas characteristics and the physico-mechanical properties of the coal. The three sets of factors are to some degree interdependent. At Collinsville, the gas characteristics coupled with the physico-mechanical properties of the coal appear to be the major factors contributing to outbursts. The relative importance of rock pressure is uncertain. The following geological parameters appear to be necessary before outbursts can occur. 1. A coal rank greater than 1.2% vitrinite reflectance. 2. Thrust faults with throws greater than 3.Om or strike- slip faults with coal gouge wider than 0.3m. 3. Seam gas emission values greater than 1.1 cm3 /g. Igneous intrusions are the likely source of the carbon dioxide seam gas. Outbursts have occurred at depths ranging from 215m to 265m. They occur at these relatively shallow depths due to: 1. the high rank of coal at the present topographic surface and the high coalification gradient; 2. the relatively high degree of tectonic deformation of the strata; 3. the seam gas characteristics; and 4. the extent of igneous intrusions.

Renison Goldfields Consolidated Limited (RGC) and Consolidated Gold Fields Plc (CGF) purchased New Guinea Goldfields Limited (NGG) in 1982 as an exploration venture. Following an intensive drilling programme in the Upper Ridges area sufficient ore reserves were outlined to justify the installation of a new 700 tonnes of ore per day gravity gold extraction plant. Major considerations in the design of the new plant were to minimise production inter- ruptions in the existing plant and to include simple, but technically efficient, equipment that could be operated and maintained by a workforce with limited experience in modern technology. These goals were achieved over a six month period, commissioning being carried out in April, 1983. Mining the epithermal gold deposit is by open cut benching and truck haulage. The gravity concentrator includes a scrubber, wet hammer mill and rod mill, to crush, grind and prepare the ore for sizing and desliming. Gold recovery units consist of a jig, spirals, shaking tables and amalgam barrels. Although the majority of the gold is in the minus 100 plus 20 microns size fraction a recovery of 63 percent, from a head grade of 2.0g/tonne, is Achieved.

The use of the heavy media cyclone (HMC) Separation process for the treatment of ores in a particular size range is comparatively new to Australia. The paper describes briefly the principles of HMC operation. Reference is made to early development work, the pilot plant trials and the acceptance of the technique as a mineral dressing process. The Mitchell Cotts pilot plant at Amdel is described briefly and the results of test work on this unit for the processing of a wide variety of ores and ore types are given. Comments are made on the ob- jectives aimed at in the investigation and results are discussed with particular reference to behaviourial differences between ore types. The process is easy to operate, possesses a high capacity-to-unit-size rating and is capable of a high degree of flexibility. Further developments such as specially prepared and graded media for specific applications, automatic media density control and regulation of media consistency by the use of surface ac- tive agents and polymers have increased versa- tility and sensitivity of control to the point where products differing by as little as 0.02 of a specific gravity unit can now be separated with ease.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic constraints on hydrothermal fluid composition from the Pliocene Boyongan and Bayugo porphyry copper-gold deposits (southern Philippines ) reveal mixing of magmatic and sea water reservoirs as the hydrothermal system evolved. Magmatic-equilibrated fluids (d18O: +8.3ë to +9.1ë; dD: -61ë to -51ë) are represented by hypersaline brines implicated in copper-gold transport and deposition. These dominate the fluid inclusion assemblage in early comb-quartz (unidirectional solidification textures), miarolitic quartz, and in K-silicate-stage quartz-K-feldspar ¦ biotite veins. Fluids responsible for post-K-silicate alteration assemblages of pyrite-clay (illite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite), alunite and smectite are represented by low-moderate salinity two-phase inclusions in co-existing quartz. These are interpreted as mixtures of evolved magmatic fluids (d18O dD: -42ë to -20ë) with evolved Pliocene sea water (d18O: + 4.0ë; dD: +4ë). The isotopic evidence for sea water involvement in the hydrothermal system suggests that porphyry emplacement and associated diatreme formation could have occurred in a submarine setting. Since 1975 two electric hydraulic drills, a Robbins 11ND and an Atlas Copco C0P1038, have been part of the production drilling fleet at Mount Isa Mines Limited's Isa Mine. As might be expected with innovative and technically more complex machines, breakdowns and mainten- ance problems have been greater than those experienced with pneumatic drifters. This has been especially so with the COP1038 but in co-operation with Atlas Copco, many modific- ations have been made to alleviate operating problems. The training and quality of the maintenance workforce is of great importance. The use of coloured pictorial diagrams for hydraulic trouble-shooting will aid in minimising maintenance downtime. Both machines have achieved good operator acceptance. This is the result of many factors, the major ones being the more acceptable environmental conditions, the relatively low amount of physical effort and the high degree of mechanisation. The drilling area is one in which there is great potential for cost savings and product- ivity gains. Because both machines are capable of a high drilling output, Isa Mine is confident of achieving these aims.

Changes in metal prices and mine output over recent years have required the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines to operate at annual tonnage rates varying from 4.0 million to 6.5 million tonnes. Several circuit combinations were operated during this period utilising up to two semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills and up to two ball mills. The aim was to maximise grinding efficiency and keep unit costs constant regardless of throughput rate. Measures to improve the SAG-ball mill unit operation were implemented with each circuit change. These included installation of a splitter to divert SAG Mill cyclone underflow back to the mill, increase SAG ball charge from four per cent v/v to eight per cent v/v, reduce in SAG top feed size and increase of ball mill grinding medium size. Modelling work and surveys led to a new design of the SAG liner profile from 60 rows of rail bar liners in a high-low arrangement to 40 rows of top hat liners in a high-high arrangement. An on-line SAG Mill feed sizing monitor was recently installed to improve grinding control.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. Potential areas for improvement in flotation performance were identified during JKTech model development surveys in October 2003. Subsequent implementation of the JKTech recommendations in consultation with flotation cell manufacturer Outokumpu have resulted in gold flotation recovery increases of more than four per cent over a two-year period. One of these recommendations was the installation of High Shear Stators in the Cleaner and Recleaner flotation cells. The High Shear Stator installation project was justified based on simulations completed using JKSimFloat. Bubble size measurements completed before and after installation of High Shear Stators showed a reduction in mean bubble size of approximately 50 per cent in the Cleaner cells. Both Cleaner and Recleaner banks showed a significant narrowing of the bubble size distributions following the installation. Plant gold recovery increase resulting from the installation of High Shear Stators was 1.1 per cent, with a 1.9 per cent increase in flotation gold recovery and 5.4 per cent increase in flotation sulfur recovery. Based on the 1.1 per cent recovery increase and total project cost of less than $200 000, the High Shear Stator Project NPV was $8 200 000 with a 0.25 year payback period.

The existence of bias in samples taken by cross-stream sample cutters has been investigated using three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) modelling. Detailed quantitative information on overall extraction ratios, size specific extraction ratios, missed and extra sample components can be made by comparing a reference sample to the actual sample. A key advantage of using this modelling approach over physical experimentation is that the reference sample can be measured on precisely the same portion of the stream of material as the actual sample, thereby allowing the elimination of a significant fraction of the variability and allowing statistically significant results to be obtained using many fewer replicates. Quantitative analysis of results broadly supports the commonly-used rule that the cutter aperture should be at least three times the nominal top-size of the material being sampled, but does not support the commonly-used rule requiring increase in cutter aperture if the cutter speed exceeds 0.6 m/s. Sampler performance can be understood in terms of the balance of forces in the congested region of material formed by the slowing of the particle stream due to collisional interactions around the mouth of the cutter.

One of the earliest and continuing challenges in driving sustainable development in large scale resource industry projects is around the issue of assessment û how do you measure the sustainability of a mineral operation? One of the key road blocks when confronted with this challenge is the temptation of technical folks to reach for a definition of sustainability or sustainable development. But definitions, by definition, have boundaries and limitations that serve to constrain thinking û they limit the thinking of what we can achieve with sustainability (it also acts as a barrier that constrains innovation). Rather than seeking definitions, better understanding of the core perspectives around sustainability and their application to the minerals industry provides a much more powerful platform from which to conduct assessments. But it is only when these perspectives are combined with the right framework and supporting techniques that the complex becomes doable. With the support of the perspectives and the framework, various assessment and measurement methodologies can be used; the challenge is communicating to stakeholders the sustainability character of the project in ways that are meaningful and to which people can connect. Assessment is not about finding the best or most accurate methods that fulfil strictly academic and possibly abstract requirements. The challenge is to help people understand what the impacts are, and what the value contributions will be, in a format and language that make sense in their world-view.

With more than 50 000 recorded abandoned mines in Australia, effective management strategies are needed to prioritise and manage health, safety, environmental and socio-economic risks and opportunities. This paper reviews international leading practices for abandoned mine management and identifies key issues that need to be addressed in the Australian context. As well as the academic literature, this review draws on a 2008 global legacy site survey and forum in 2008, a Churchill Fellowship study of abandoned mines and the recently released æStrategic Framework for Management of Abandoned Mines in the Minerals IndustryÆ (MCMPR/MCA, 2010).A conceptual model was developed to identify the relationship between key issues affecting the management of abandoned mines in Australia. The conceptual model is then used in the development of a maturity chart which draws on risk management principles to provide leading practice guidance for abandoned mine managers, jurisdictions and stakeholders. The Mount Isa Mines Copper Mine in Mount Isa started producing copper in 1966. The Copper Mine gradually increased production rates to nearly six million tonnes per year. Over the last three years the mine has been in a gradual ramp down due to the reduction of primary ore sources and head grade. The majority of ore sources are predominantly in pillar retreat sequences bounded by multiple fill masses. There also a substantial lower grade resource delineated to the south of the main orebody. These remaining ore sources present significant engineering challenges to obtain a safe and cost-effective extraction. Stope designs have become increasingly complex and require additional engineering and operations input and analysis. This paper describes the major planning and operational challenges and issues associated with the stope design and extraction of an orebody in the later stages of mine life.

The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed. Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.

Chrome chemicals are commercially produced by the alkali roasting of chromite ores with sodium carbonate. Results of tests conducted in a laboratory furnace indicated that the sodium carbonate reacted rapidly with part of the gangue material to form a metastable intermediate that later reacted further with the chromite. For the conditions used, the recovery of water-soluble sodium chromate was able to be described empirically as yield % = a tn with a = 0.24 T - 241.3; n = 3.90 - 3.12 × 10-3 T and t is the reaction time in hours.The major rate limiting step in the overall reaction sequence appears to be the rate at which oxygen can get to the reaction sites across the liquid film coating the solid reactants.Sodium sulfate alone was found to be an unsatisfactory source of alkali for reaction with chromite. However when limestone also was added in quantities sufficient to allow the reaction CaCO3 + Na2SO4 + H20 ? Ca SO4 + 2NaOH + CO2 to take place, the results obtained were comparable to those found when sodium car-bonate was used.For chromite particles in the size range -124 + 105 µm, the use of stoichiometric excess of sodium carbonate did not appear to increase the yield or the reaction rate significantly. However, with smaller sized particles, - 53 µm, increased yields of water-soluble chromate were obtained when roasted with more than the theoretical quantity of sodium carbonate.
