Improving the safety culture and performance of any operation is a fundamental goal of every mine operator. Methods of implementing, or changing a culture have developed from the early methods of operant conditioning, for example rewarding crews for achieving nominated safety milestones i.e. 3 months Lost Time Injury (LTI) free through to the current model of engaging a workforce through education and empowerment. As a large scale and mature operation with multiple contractors, Telfer has been exposed to numerous programs throughout its history. This has provided the opportunity to build on and complement these systems by integrating key elements from each. SAFE 360° is a new approach developed to engage the workforce in a holistic approach to encourage positive behaviours across all facets of an individual’s life which results in a focus on situational awareness at all times, rather than being workplace specific. It is based on three key modules: • Emotional Intelligence • Mindfulness • Situational Awareness Each module has a series of modules that help enhance the individual’s sense of self, leading to an ability to self-reflect and self-manage whilst empowering them with the moral courage to challenge their peers to raise standards. Since commencing this SAFE 360° behavioural safety risk management journey in November 2017, we have witnessed a change in the way our workforce engages with each other, their workplace and with management. There has been an increase in hazard perception, identification and ownership of issues, and we have seen a significant decrease in site TRIFR rate from 13.7 to 5.7 (as of April 2019). This paper will provide an overview of the program, how it has been implemented, case studies to demonstrate outcomes and KPIs used to measure effectiveness.

There is growing interest in the mining industry on the application of ore sorting. While many are familiar with particle sorting, including the limitations that technology presents (e.g. throughput), bulk sorting, with its higher throughput potential, is less understood. Despite the potential to sort at higher throughputs, few operations have adopted bulk sorting processes, certainly not at large scale. It is suggested that the inability to reliably predict outcomes from bulk sorting may be limiting its adoption in mining projects. Consequently, an evaluation approach for bulk ore sorting has been developed such that mass pulls and grade upgrades can be predicted in the context of a mining study. The approach allows for evaluation of drill core assays and application of the consequently derived heterogeneity relationships to the block model for estimation of sorting outcomes. These processes were applied to conveyor-based bulk sorting for the CuMo project in Idaho, USA and are described in this paper.

At its simplest, the classification and characterisation of an orebody is a matter of Where, What and When. Where and with what spatial resolution are measurements taken, What properties are measured, and When are the data acquired, processed, and delivered to create the most value. This paper delves into how existing and near-term advances in measurement technologies, field automation, and whole-system-digitisation are combining to open new routes for mine and exploration productivity improvement. Commencing when the initial exploration hole is dug, the advancement in deployment of survey technology—from expert-operated, to driller-operated, to driller-integrated—is used to demonstrate a template for adoption of higher technology measurements. We then introduce and discuss the multi-use measurement as offering outsized returns from a single measurement run, highlighting two new technologies that acquire rock strength while drilling and downhole assay data as examples. For rock strength, we highlight a novel approach to determining Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) while drilling, its relationship to and advantages over Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), and how it offers utility to multiple downstream processes. For downhole assay, we detail how a back-tophysics approach to Pulsed Fast and Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) analysis offers significant advantages over other measurement methods and earlier implementations of PFTNA, generating a rich data set that can significantly extend and improve the information on which mining decisions are made. Finally, we discuss the possibilities enabled via optimising data delivery, collection, and curation— noting a fundamental limitation of historical systems and exploring the possibilities that will be unlocked by soon-to-market solutions that better enable Orebody Characterisation data to (virtually) move in space and time with rock material post-blasting. Ultimately, the value of optimising the Where, What, and When from point of measurement to the moment it generates maximum value will create greater life-of-asset production for a lower cost and energy input.

Zinc-Lead-Silver (Zn-Pb-Ag) mineralisation at the George Fisher Mine occurs in multiple structurally-disrupted stratiform orebodies hosted within a mid-Proterozoic sequence of calcareous siltstones and variably pyritic shales (e.g. Valenta, 1994; Chapman, 2004). The geological model for the mine has been constructed based on a large number of stratigraphic domains which have been defined using recognised patterns of the constituent rocktypes, aided by recognition and mapping of K-rich tuff marker beds (TMBs). The continuity of these domains has been affected by the presence of several sets of faults which are extensional in the plane of stratigraphy, leading to the common occurrence of fault-related stratigraphic gaps in drillholes. Recent improvements to the detail of the geological model have led to significant improvements in the head grade of ore at George Fisher, with relatively small loss of metal. Recognition and accurate logging of these domains requires a high level of knowledge and expertise amongst mine geologists. In order to aid this process, the George Fisher mine installed a Minalyzer CS (core scanner) on site, with the aim of using high resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) geochemical data and core photography to increase the speed, accuracy and consistency of the site geological logging system. This contribution describes some preliminary results from a research project aimed at using the Minalyzer CS XRF data to perform high-resolution rocktype identification and domain boundary mapping in drillcore at George Fisher. The SRS-1200 concept came about following the recommendations from the Board of Inquiry into the 1994 Moura No 2 mine disaster with the aim of having a system to remove personnel from an unsafe environment underground via a shaft where no other means of escape is possible. It is a mobile rescue unit that utilises a winding system to operate a man cage. It can descend the cage up to 1200 m into a vertical shaft. This operation is managed from the winder control compartment located on the non-driver side at the rear of the vehicle.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd operates an underground mine below a large open pit at the Sunrise Dam Gold Mine near Laverton in Western Australia. Operations are based on an extensive mineralised zone which has very complex geometry, has a high ‘nugget effect’, and is difficult to interpret and model. Initial underground ore was produced from relatively narrow orebodies dipping from 15º - 70º. Open stopes aimed to selectively extract high-grade ore, using methods including jumbo stripping and longhole drilling and blasting. The complex geology makes it difficult to accurately locate development and stopes in the positions required for profitable production. In narrow stopes, rock mass damage and overbreak dilute ore grades and increase the cost per ounce of gold poured. In flat orebodies, several different techniques have been used to recover blasted ore but overall productivity is low. Thus selective mining can also be slow, costly and recovers only a portion of the available mineral resources. Large longhole open stopes with cemented paste backfill are used to extract multiple zones of mineralisation from the Cosmo and GQ orebodies. Bulk emulsion explosives and electronic detonators are used in all large stope blasts to reduce the risk of misfires and to accurately control blasthole initiation sequences and delay timing. Larger stopes improve productivity and significantly reduce direct mining costs, enabling the use of lower economic cut-off grades which increase the overall recovery of mineral resources. This paper reviews the evolution of open stoping at Sunrise Dam, the various mining methods and drilling and blasting practices used, the results achieved, and the lessons learned.

The unmanned driving technology in open pit coalmines is an important technology that relies on innovation to drive the development of the open pit coal mining industry in China’s transformation of growth drivers and industrial structure upgrading. It is an important path to solve the shortage of mine truck drivers in the future mining, an important way to improve the working environment of open pit mining personnel, and an important foundation for achieving flexible production capacity in open pit mining to cooperate with the coordinated development of new energy. The communication rules at intersections are key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of unmanned driving in open pit coalmines. This paper proposes a collaborative traffic strategy between unmanned trucks for the single bucket unmanned truck intermittent process system in open pit coalmines. Based on the gap theory, this paper analyses the conflict characteristics and establishes a coordinated traffic strategy for the common intersection and merging conflicts of unmanned truck trucks in open pit coalmines, A multi-agent system simulation platform was built to evaluate the coordinated traffic efficiency under different initial average gap sizes of vehicles, with intersection traffic density, vehicle speed, and gap changes as key indicators. The results show that under the simulation conditions of this article, when the initial average gap of vehicles reaches three (four) times or more of the safe distance, the coordinated traffic performance of intersection conflicts (merging conflicts) is better, and the traffic capacity of intersections is close to the traffic capacity without conflicts.

The Northern Beaches Storage Project (NBSP) is part of Sydney Water’s SewerFix™ Program to improve the wastewater system and protect public health and the environment. It was built by the SewerFix Wet Weather Alliance (the Alliance), a partnership between Sydney Water, RPS, MWH, Parsons Brinckerhoff and United Group Infrastructure.The project temporarily stores excess wastewater diverted from the Narrabeen Submain during wet weather. The project considered a below-ground storage facility, which involved constructing a deep tunnel from Brookvale to Fairlight, connecting into the Northside Storage Tunnel and a storage tank, which was subsequently adopted and constructed.The storage tank scheme included a pumping station and inlet and outlet pipes installed by microtunnelling. The storage tank site is in the Brookvale industrial area situated in an area of deep marine sediments overlying Hawkesbury Sandstone at about 30?m below ground. Microtunnelling for the inlet pipe was conducted from a 12?m deep jacking shaft. The jacking shaft and 14?m deep pumping station excavations were carried out from within secant pile earth retaining structures adjacent to existing buildings.Construction activities had the potential to cause settlement of the adjacent buildings. During excavation and microtunnelling the water ingress, adjacent groundwater level and settlement of the adjacent buildings were monitored. The monitoring data was assessed against an action plan, which modified construction activities as required to minimise the risk of damage to buildings from settlements caused by lowering of the groundwater table outside the excavations. The secant pile construction, excavation, microtunnelling and pumping station construction proceeded without incident or damage to adjacent buildings.This paper highlights that tunnel/underground options should be considered during options development, describes the original storage tunnel scheme and presents details of the successful microtunnelling and deep shaft construction adopted on the NBSP.CITATION:Taylor, N and Hewitt, P, 2014. "Predicting how coal seams will be beneficiated through the coal handling processing plant (CHPP) has long been challenging within BHP Coal. Various coal seams from different areas are mined and stockpiled separately, often depending upon a deleterious coal quality parameter; high/low trace elements for example. These stockpiles are then fed in different ratios into the CHPP to produce the desired product/s. In understanding the washability characteristics of the feed source, mine geologists and process engineers work together to improve the beneficiation of different coal materials through the CHPP.For the majority of the BHP Coal deposits, the washability data is available for the coal seams across the deposits. However, no previous standardised modelling and prediction technique existed that could ensure the correct information was available for forecasting and refining CHPP processes. This paper will discuss the steps undertaken to implement a geometallurgical prediction tool that simplified and streamlined the washability modelling and yield estimation process. The value realised to the BHP Coal assets resulting from this process was: improved compliance to plan increased throughput increased CHPP recovery through improved efficiencies and increased revenues.CITATION:Handley, P J, 2017. Assessing and managing instability hazards is an essential activity when working with unstable natural slopes and excavated open pit mining slopes. Slope monitoring has become the standard technique for the management of geotechnical risks associated with mine slope instability hazards. In recent decades, a proliferation of new monitoring techniques such as terrestrial radar, satellite InSAR and LIDAR have become standard operational tools, complementing conventional survey-based monitoring solutions. A reliable monitoring system should identify and record incipient anomalous slope movement. Although the most obvious purpose of a monitoring system is safety related, slope deformation and performance monitoring also enhance the understanding of slope behaviour and assists in improving system design and implementation. For a monitoring system to be considered an effective early warning tool, it needs to operate in real-time and should be linked to the mine’s emergency communication systems. Terrestrial radar systems have been developed that can provide near real-time measurements, at a high level of precision and covering broad areas in all weather conditions. This has had a positive impact on the management of geotechnical risks in operational conditions. The technology adoption of RADAR in mine monitoring has significantly progressed in the last 20 years from technology enthusiasts, to visionaries, to pragmatists to conservative users. However, the increasing adoption of RADAR cannot reduce or remove other monitoring techniques that often have important benefits; even if these technologies cannot be used as a real-time operational tool. An increasing awareness on the importance of combining data from different monitoring techniques to develop a holistic picture of all possible geotechnical hazards is a current industry trend. This is proving to be an excellent foundation for managing hazards associated with slope instability in open pit mines, and is only expected to improve with time with the adoption of new technologies based on big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) is routinely derived from waste rock, tailings, pit wall rock, underground mine voids, heap leach pads, ore stockpiles, concentrate stockpiles and even slag piles. In many jurisdictions, there is an assumption that tailings materials represent the highest AMD risk. This is likely due to their highly sulfidic and ultra-fine grained nature, and the fact that they occur in large tonnage, partially unsaturated deposits. These characteristics are not unreasonably associated with reactive and therefore highly polluting mine waste materials. Interestingly, however, the high sulfide content and highly reactive nature of tailings achieves the rapid consumption of oxygen in tailings pore spaces. This oxygen depletion can limit or halt sulfide oxidation throughout much of the tailings pile. Oxygen can only be resupplied to the tailings via atmospheric exchange at the air-tailings interface. The grain size of most tailings materials limits this resupply to a diffusion related process that only affects the uppermost 100–2000 mm. Hence sulfide oxidation in tailings can be inherently self-limiting. Unfortunately, the same cannot be concluded for waste rock materials.Using a unique site assessment strategy that focuses on quantifying acidity fluxes from various domains at a mine site, it has become increasingly evident that sulfidic waste rock produces the majority (typically 60–80 per cent) of the soluble acid and metalliferous pollution at most active and decommissioned sulfide-bearing mine sites. Whether sulfidic waste rock is disposed in engineered above ground facilities, backfilled into pits or even underground voids, it remains the primary source of pollutants for decades to centuries.Conventional end-dumping waste rock practices result in angle-of-repose pathways for air and water, and these internal fabrics exacerbate sulfide oxidation (ie pollution generation) and discharge from waste rock materials. The primary aim of many cover systems is to retard the access of air and water to these conduits. Recent thinking is that more emphasis needs to be directed at strategic waste rock pile construction practices, and less reliance placed on thin soil cover systems to prevent AMD.Waste rock pile construction approaches that minimise porosity and permeability but raise the retained moisture content and enhance water residence times have the potential to lower sulfide oxidation rates and thereby improve water quality outcomes. Mining project developers are committed to taking on all the challenges and obligations of financial risk management. It is interesting that our current models of project finance have not changed markedly in principle for some 700 years, yet the rules which prepare the way for effective project assessment and subsequent loan management still do not seem to be well understood by project or corporate developers. Probability and gravity fill the opposing trays of the golden balance of financial risk. Understanding the relationship between these opposing, but intimately related elements is critically important for successful risk management. It is important to move beyond the qualitative approach and use quantitative methodologies to measure the financial impact of the occurrence of each major risk. We live in a world where the only constant is change and thus it is not surprising that a bankerÆs life is still governed by assessing, measuring and pricing risk. Banks are attracted to funding well managed companies with strong cash flow projects. But we are more risk averse compared with the credit appetites of late last century. This attitudinal shift has resulted in tougher term sheets for the early 21st century, encompassing more conditions, warranties, undertakings and stronger cash sweep provisions. Banks require well balanced portfolios to achieve an acceptable spread of risk, thus there is a more restricted market for small company lending than that available to large multi-project corporate entities with less concentrated risk profiles. Because of this focus, junior company debt finance remains comparatively expensive and especially so for more challenging geographical and political environments.

The Telfer Underground sublevel cave (SLC) Operation is located approximately 850 m below surface. The cave was designed to propagate through an old decline which was initially used to monitor the cave. There was a requirement to install air blast plugs at two locations in the old decline in order to isolate any potential air-blasts from the active workings in the event of the rock mass collapsing into the cavity. There was a further requirement for an air-blast plug in another section of the mine where there was a risk of the cave intersecting an old workshop and providing an air-blast pathway through an abandoned incline. The design criteria for the plugs was that they should withstand the design air blast loading, be free draining, cost effective and easily constructed with the mining expertise available on site. A plug consisting of grouted mullock was considered robust and least challenging to construct. For the purpose of estimation of maximum air pressure on plugs, it is supposed as a worst case that the rock above a cave falls as an airtight piston onto the top of a muck pile, forcing air into it and also mine workings intersected by the cave. Airflow through the muck pile is governed by Ergun's equation for turbulent flow. In a time-stepping integration scheme, transient air pressures and velocities are calculated according to equations of thermodynamics, in the cave and at intervals along intersected drives by means of a finite difference spatial discretisation. The ability of plugs to withstand computed pressures is assessed by finite element elastoplastic analysis. This paper outlines the rationale for potential air blast loading, calculation of transient air pressures, plug design and analysis of plug behaviour. The plug construction method is also discussed.

Conditional simulation can be used to determine the probabilities of block iron-grades being above selected cut-offs. However, there are much faster alternatives that can produce acceptable results. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody is used as the basis of a case study to assess alternatives to simulation. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce data subsets. A complete distribution of iron grades for points or blocks is obtained utilising the data subsets and the following techniques: conditional simulation, median indicator kriging, the probability from conditional expectation and confidence intervals attached to the estimation of blocks in the framework of the discrete Gaussian model. The complete blasthole dataset is considered to represent the true iron grades at sample point support while the ordinary kriging estimate derived from these samples is considered to represent the true block grades. The distributions obtained from point estimates, block estimates and simulations are compared to each other and to the true estimates of iron grades using graphs and statistics. The conditional expectation technique reproduced the results obtained from conditional simulation extremely well and it is a viable alternative to simulation at point support. At block support the confidence intervals technique reproduced the results of the conditional simulation more closely than the median indicator kriging and in the data subsets tested the confidence intervals technique actually reproduced the true grade distribution more closely than the conditional simulation.

Local communities are undertaking an increased role in mine project decision making processes, associated with growing pressure and expectations from regulators, financiers and the general public. This is particularly evident in international projects within developing economies. Environmental and social issues are often complex. Solutions demand difficult choices and trade-offs between sustainable development dimensions: economic growth, social equity and environmental integrity. Proactive stakeholder engagement can play a critical role in assisting decision-makers in determining the operational reality of sustainable development by jointly exploring project trade-offs between proponents and affected stakeholders. Good stakeholder engagement has other potential benefits, ranging from reduced financial risk due to regulator delays, legal disputes or negative publicity to increasing market share through good public image. Approaches to consultation and disclosure have changed from short-term regulatory based focuses, to longer-term, strategic tools for relationship building, proactive risk management and new business identification. Approaches to consultation form a significant opportunity to contribute to overall social sustainability. This paper discusses, based on authorsÆ experience, the broader concept of stakeholder engagement and its contribution to social sustainability of the mining industry. The focus is on key considerations for an effective stakeholder engagement. Three case studies outline how broad based, proactive stakeholder engagement can contribute to improved operation and overall sustainability. The case studies include: a greenfields project in Ghana; a long-term mine in Australia; and an open-pit mine in Vietnam.

The Kibali Gold Mine is currently comprised of several open pits, a 3.5 Mtpa underground mine and a 7.5 Mtpa processing plant. Development of the underground operation commenced in December 2012, with initial access established through twin surface declines, followed by the commencement of a blind sink 8 m diameter rock hoist shaft in March 2013. Stope production started in December 2014 with ore and waste trucked to surface. The 755 m deep blind shaft sink was completed in August 2015 together with the cutting and equipping of three main station levels. Two of these levels provide access for the establishment of the underground materials handling system as well as the main dewatering system for the mine. This paper covers the process of determining the optimal location of the Kibali hoisting shaft relative to project-specific critical factors, and then focuses on the design and implementation journey associated with the off-shaft development that essentially encompasses the Material Handling System (MHS) for the mine. The journey starts from the findings of the previous owners Feasibility Study (FS), a subsequent Optimised FS, followed by detailed engineering through to implementation. It was identified during implementation that a significant change in the designed off-shaft layout was required following detailed underground geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations. In addition, the paper provides details on the MHS performance since commissioning to steady state, and on key learnings relating to the overall project process.

A hidden asset in most exploration and mining activities is data. Common practice involves the spending of large amounts of money to discover, define and prove the viability of a mining project. Some organisations have used operations research analysis and internal costing methods to allocate a value to their data and to compare the costs of data maintenance to other more tangible activities like plant and equipment maintenance. Those organisations, which do not undertake such an analysis often, have little knowledge or understanding of the extent and the worth of their data. Often the organisations lack of knowledge and understanding of the data is indicated by their failure to fully exploit or realise their opportunities. The focus of this paper is to discuss new technologies that optimise the management and security of collected and derived data. The technologies discussed are components of the software systems acQuire and MineSight.

The resurgence of silicosis and coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP) in mining and the recent ban of engineered stone products underscore the need to comprehensively address mineral dust exposures and the associated health hazards. Worker exposure to particulate matter, remains a pressing concern demanding nuanced exploration as all dusts are not created equal. The established link between silica and respiratory diseases necessitates a more detailed understanding of the characterisation of particulates and their health impacts. While current monitoring relies on total mass, it is increasingly evident that the size, shape, mineralogy and agglomeration of particles play a crucial role in determining health impacts. This has been evident in the engineered stone industry with workers not only facing a greater risk of silicosis, but also seeing a faster progression of the disease and a higher likelihood of dying from it. Simultaneously, the surging demand for critical minerals, integral to low-carbon economies, has seen government and industry fast tracking the exploration, mining and processing of these commodities. Critical minerals, crucial in technologies like lithium-ion batteries and high-performance alloys, are central to achieving global environmental goals. Significant funding is currently being allocated to advance the development and processing of these materials, however there remains a considerable gap in understanding potential health risks, urging comprehensive health risk assessments. To tackle these challenges, the University of Queensland has developed innovative dust characterisation methodologies, including the use of the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), a scanning electron microscope, to characterise respirable and inhalable dust samples. This advanced technique, initially applied in coal and metals mining, is expanding to critical minerals mining, unravelling diverse mineralogical components and particle size distributions. This conference presentation will showcase the latest research, emphasising the use of advanced analytical techniques to deepen our understanding of the size, shape and mineralogical composition of particulate matter. By synergising insights from coalmines, metals mines, smelters, engineered stone and critical minerals assessments, we aim to proactively manage health risks, contributing to safer workplaces and responsible production practices in the mining sector.

The Pajingo gold operation in Queensland is approximately 50 kilometres south of Charters Towers and 134km south-west of Townsville. The resource was discovered in 1983 and first open pit gold production began in 1986. The mine traditionally employed a bottom-up sequence – a combination of modified and traditional Avoca methods with run-of-mine waste backfill. This practice caused many high-grade crown pillars to be left in place, yet accessible. In recent years, these crown pillars have been extracted by injection grouting of rockfill. This process facilitated blind up-hole open stoping. To date, thirteen separate injection campaigns have been completed, of which ten were deemed successful. In general, the two key technical difficulties in this mining technique are: maintaining a consistent high-quality ground consolidation of the rock fill material; and controlling the drill and blast practices during stoping. Here, effective drill-and-blast control was found to be essential to achieve the dual aims of 100% extraction, and maximum sill pillar stability to minimise dilution. During stoping, the technical performance of the consolidated rock-fill was recorded; both to verify the design, and to identify operational improvements. The results showed that Pajingo has realised both reduced production down-time through use of early strength gain grout, and more rapid and thorough grout consolidation through changes to the emplacement method. The optimisation of consolidated rock fill has led to several quantifiable benefits to the mine, including: profitable extraction of previously sterilised crown pillars resulting in both increased ore reserves and production profile; improvements to the stability of grouted stope crowns, thereby reducing safety and production related; risks associated with open up-hole stopes; reduction in cost and time constraints, with respect to the grouting of loose fill; and reduction in grout curing time – from 14 days to 8 days – thereby minimising production down-time. This paper is a case study of the evolution and optimisation of the up-hole open stoping mining method at Pajingo. The challenges and successes are discussed in terms of their key mining outcomes.
