Rio Tinto’s Hunter Valley Operations is a large open pit coalmine situated in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Australia. The Riverview West Pit has faced increasing production challenges in recent times due to decreasing dragline strike lengths and increasing environmental constraints on vibration, overpressure and fume generation. Conventional mining techniques would involve five to six production blasts per strip to recover multiple coal seams. Each blast event carries the risk of exceeding the strict environmental requirements. By working collaboratively with Orica, it was realised that the blasting method known as Stratablast™, in conjunction with advanced computer modelling techniques, could provide productivity gains whilst simultaneously providing more control over the environmental effects and the impact on nearby infrastructure.As a result of this change, the number of blasts per strip was reduced to one, with the implication that a great deal of care and forethought was needed to manage the increased challenge posed by multiple constraints in the proposed mining area. This innovative approach of combining throw and stand-up blasts allowed the extraction of all major coal seams in a single pass blast event. The blasts were initially designed with a large factor of safety to stay within environmental limits as they were over 1.1 km in strike length, with more than 800 holes and with a total charge weight of about 1000 t of bulk explosives. Furthermore, there were conflicting priorities around the desired blast outcomes. So far, 11 such blasts have been designed and successfully fired. After each blast, innovative design changes have been iteratively implemented to provide further control over environmental impacts, whilst continuing to improve productivity. As a result of these changes, blasts have progressively increased in complexity with the inclusion of features such as damage zones, mid-splitting, time gaps and different directions of firing. The consequence of this complexity is that the blast duration can be as long as 28 seconds to accommodate all components of the blast.This project has increased the productivity of the Riverview West Pit through blast design improvements and allowed the environmental impacts to be managed with far more control and predictability than would have been possible under a conventional blasting regime. Water sprays on mining machines are generally put there to reduce dust; however, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has shown that considerable airflows may also be generated by these sprays. This recognition of water spray-gen- erated air movement led to the "Spray-Fan" - a continuous miner auxiliary ventilation system which was shown to reduce methane peaks by a factor of 15. Recent successes and failures of the Spray Fan are reviewed. More recently, the same principles were used in the design of the "Shearer- Clearer" for reducing dust at longwall shearer operators. The original design was successful; however, a new design is now available which is more practical to install and does a much better job of holding the dust against the face downwind of the shearer. The latest research objective is to eliminate the negative impact of spray- generated air turbulence on continuous miner dust control. Most coal faces in the USA are ventilated in the exhaust mode using "line curtain", and the forward airflow on the side of the heading opposite the curtain is inevitably weak. Air turbulence generated by sprays which are incorrectly located and/or operated at excessive pressures can cause roll back - in which the dust cloud at the face is forced unwind against the ventilation and spreads over the miner cnerator. The general approach to reducing "roll back." is reviewed and art anti-roll back water spray system is presented.

Advanced computer aided geological modelling techniques are now available to the geologist to allow the rapid evaluation of a gold orebody at various stages of its development. The types of grade estimation techniques used change during the various stages as the density of drilling and knowledge of the deposit increases. At the prospect evaluation stage drillhole intercept selection techniques are coupled with preliminary 2D (vein or layer) modelling or 3D block modelling techniques to arrive at a geological resource estimate. At the prefeasibility and feasibility stages more sophisticated 2D and 3D modelling techniques, such as domain controlled grade interpolation with anisotropy, are used along with interactive open pit and underground mine design, to calculate recoverable reserves. At the production stage closely spaced blasthole sample data is modelled quickly and coupled with interactive grade control facilities. Shot volumes, tonnages and grade estimates can be databased to provide reconciliation figures. These modelling techniques are embodied in MINEX-3D, an Australian software system which, with the emergence of the 386-based PC and high resolution (VGA or better) graphics, makes a whole range of advanced geological modelling techniques available to most exploration and mine geologists.

"Resurrected from its former life at the Big Bell operation, the grinding circuit at Evolution Mining’s Edna May operation in Western Australia has many a story to tell. The task of optimising a plant designed for another orebody provides as many challenges as opportunities. Initially faced with a blend of primary and oxide ore, the circuit achieved in excess of 320 t/h until the oxide was depleted, leaving only the much harder primary feed.The 2.0 MW semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill and 3.7 MW ball mill were assisted by a 150 kW pebble crusher, but the power limitation of the SAG mill resulted in a drop in throughput. Edna May personnel have been involved in a number of progressive improvements to restore the design capacity of the concentrator and work towards 3 Mt/a or even higher ahead of the gravity and leach recovery circuits.These improvements include: a crush forward configuration of the SAG mill scats partial to full secondary crushing variable speed drive upgrade of the SAG mill lifter and grate design changes ball mill circuit grinding efficiency.This paper summarises the chronology of events that has resulted in significant improvements in throughput by conventional (and in some cases, novel) methods of reconfiguring the existing grinding mills. The discovery of gold mineralization at the Manhattan mercury mine, Napa and Yolo counties, California in 1978 was the result of applying a new exploration ore deposit model in a region previously unprospected for gold. This discovery, the McLaughlin gold mine, owned and operated by Home-stake Mining Company, is a classic epithermal mercury-hot springs-gold deposit currently producing approximately 7,776,000 grams of gold annually.The exploration program that led to this discovery was based on a mercury-hot springs-gold genetic model. The model was developed using basic knowledge of ore-forming processes plus careful field observations made during examination of many known precious metal districts in. the Western U.S.A. Theoretically, hot spring systems could host gold deposits and, indeed, gold in these environments had been recognized for years. However, at the time of the McLaughlin discovery, it was not known to occur in sufficient quantities to inspire geologists to explore hot spring systems specifically for gold. Field observations recognized the presence of hot spring deposits and mercury mineralization asso-ciated with precious metal districts, (Bodie, California being a type example), and this associ-ation prompted the development of a hypothetical model. Subsequent exploration activities were directed towards the examination of mercury mines and prospects as potential targets for gold deposits. The model envisioned hot spring deposits (sinter) containing mercury mineralization at the surface with anomalous gold values grading downward into significant ore grade gold values.

This paper presents updated interpretations of controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and highlights structural features that influence the geometry of mineralisation domains used in resource estimation. The Area C mining lease is located in the central Hamersley Province, ~100 km WNW of Newman, Western Australia, and contains resources of approximately 1100 Mt of Marra Mamba and Brockman iron mineralisation. C Deposit is located within Area C, on the northern limb of the Weeli Wolli anticline, and mineralisation is hosted predominantly in the Mt Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Formation. Production from C Deposit began in August 2003, following mining of a 950 000 tonne bulk sample in 2002. Recent mapping in the bulk-sample pit and updated interpretations by BHP Billiton geologists have highlighted the significance of structural controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and their influence on the thickness of mineralisation, which ranges from 20 to 80 metres. Structural controls on the geometry and continuity of mineralised domains include south-dipping thrust faults that developed along the Mount Newman/West Angela contact, folds associated with thrust fault development, steeply dipping stratigraphic contacts in the hanging wall of the thrust faults, and gently north-dipping stratigraphic contacts. Thrust faults and folds in C Deposit are significant for two main reasons: their formation resulted in the thickening of the main ore-hosting units in the Mount Newman Member; and faults and folded stratigraphic contacts provided conduits for supergene metasomatic-enrichment processes that produce high-grade iron mineralisation.The implications of this interpretation for the definition of the resource estimation domains are discussed, and suggestions are made for a better integration of geology into the data acquisition and estimation process.

Theories on the origin of the Itabira iron formation (itabirite) in Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF), as elsewhere in the world, are restricted by the apparent lack of adjoining volcanic units, severe syndeformational metamorphism and deep weathering. Besides the three types of iron formations at QF (siliceous, dolomitic and amphibolitic; Dorr, 1969) we include a fourth type initially described as ocherous, goethitic, limonitic or even yellow iron formation. Considering its high magnetite content, it has been described as yellow magnetite itabirite (Pires, 1979). It was reported as formed by the alteration of the dolomitic itabirite (Dorr, 1969) although the anomalous Al2O3 contents are high for normal weathered itabirite. The yellowish magnetitic itabirite occurs at the bottom of the Itabira Iron formation, along the contact with the Batatal schists, and at the top units of the Itabira, within the Gandarela Formation. Within the magnetitic itabirite at the Tamanduß iron ore mine there are metric zones, concordant to the bedding of pillow-like structures, exhibiting a porous core, surrounded by an intermediate, more granular zone with numerous, minute rounded cavities grading to an external, fine-grained zone with much less minute cavities. In the external portions of some pillows a breadcrust type structure, derived by quenching with the water can be observed. In some other zones, such as the Barreiro hill, an outer, vesicular, whitish yellow, 5 - 10 mm thick, band grades to an aphanitic, isotropic band. The vesicles are slightly flattened against the band surfaces. The existence of fragmental layers showing flowage and fragment alignment, kaolinitic laminas and vesicles filled with kaolinite at Barreiro Hill and Capitpo do Mato Mine represent mesoscopic structures, indicators of a possible volcanic origin. Chemical compositions of the magnetitic itabirite from a wide area in QF revealed a relatively high Al2O3 content, consistent with a volcanic origin.

Mine to Mill (MTM) optimisation, a total systems approach to the reduction of energy and cost in mining and mineral processing operations, is well-established technology. However, successful applications of MTM optimisation have been largely confined to gold, copper and lead/zinc semi autogenous grinding (SAG) operations, where the goals of tweaking the blast design to increase fines and hence throughput through the mill have been relatively easy to meet. The application of MTM optimisation in a more demanding environment, like that of a multi-stage crushing and screening aggregate operation, was conceived as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) initiative in 2004, aiming to reduce the energy consumption in the US aggregates industry. Two quarries operated by the Luck Stone Corporation of Richmond, Virginia, were selected for the demonstration sites. Dealing with ore variability and a requirement to maintain a fixed feed size distribution to the tertiary plant, whilst still aiming to increase yields of saleable products, presented some unique challenges. Despite these variables, the implementation of the MTM approach at Luck StoneÆs aggregate plant in Pittsboro, North Carolina, has led to a tangible improvement in productivity, particularly in the primary and secondary plants. The successful outcome was dependent upon several key factors, including reliable blasting and processing models, careful analysis of the rock conditions and plant configuration, understanding and buy-in from the Luck Stone operations staff, excellent collaboration with Virginia Tech staff and students, and long-term monitoring made possible through comprehensive PLC logging. This paper presents a review of the work conducted at the Pittsboro quarry and highlights the key reasons behind the successful implementation of the MTM approach in a complex plant environment.

Water reuse is becoming an integral component of the water management strategy on mine sites. This practise is being driven by corporate sustainability goals, community and societal pressures to demonstrate improved water stewardship, as well as climate and regulatory pressures. However, water reuse often results in water quality compromise which can then result in decreased recovery through problems in processing circuits, product quality, and an increased likelihood of discharge of water that cannot meet environmental regulatory requirements. On most mine sites, there is usually a disjuncture between water quantity management and water quality management with the latter being managed solely as an environmental problem. It is becoming increasingly clear that water quality and quantity must be managed as an integrated system. In order to integrate water quality and quantity management to achieve multiple objectives the dynamics of water and constituents must be understood. Using examples from a study being conducted at a coal mine in the Bowen Basin, this paper will outline the dynamics of water and salts on the site.

The complexities of mining in current economic conditions, where ore extraction schedules are varied on a weekly basis so as to ensure constant supply to the process plant, can result in a number of scenarios that pose geotechnical challenges. This paper presents a case study where alterations in the mining schedule of a particular mine resulted in the necessity to mine under a large uncompacted embankment, ie integrated tailings and mine waste land form. To effectively ensure that ore recovery was maximised, a well-designed slope monitoring system to evaluate design performance and to provide timely warning of impending failures was imperative. In order for an appropriate slope monitoring strategy to be developed, a thorough understanding of the potential slope failure mechanisms, capabilities and limitations of available monitoring techniques is required. Communication of the monitoring results and response strategy to alarms generated by monitoring systems must also be carefully considered to maximise effectiveness. The results of preliminary stability modelling can be used to guide the design of a monitoring system, which in turn can then generate data which can be used to iteratively refine the geotechnical model. This paper illustrates the development and implementation of a slope monitoring system and associated communication system, using the Daydream embankment at Fortescue Metals Group's (FMG's) Cloudbreak Operations as a case study.

Investigations of the Mineragraphic Section; Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, have included most of the known stannite-bearing ores in Australia, and have revealed several new occurrences of this relatively uncommon mineral. They provide information about its paragenesis, and its possible effect on tin recovery, that may be of general interest.Several of the investigations used in the preparation of this paper, were made in the first instance by pr. F. L. Stillwell or in collaboration with him.CASSITERITE-SULPHIDE ORES IN NORTH-WEST- TASMANIA Stannite is a minor component of most of the cassiterite sulphide ores of north-western Tasmania. These include the orebodies of Mount Bischoff, the Cleveland mine, Moina, the Stanley River district, Renison Bell, and the Heemskirk-Zeehan district, and form a well defined metallogenetic provence which is related to the Devonian granites of this part of Tasmania.In these ores mineralisation began. with deposition of cassiterite, a little wolfram, and quartz, topaz and tourmaline. With falling temperature, deposition of cassiterite ceased and arsenopy-rite, pyrite, and especially pyrrhotite, formed in abundance, tending to give massive sulphide ore. A little chalcopyrite; stannite, sphalerite and native bismuth accompanied the pyrrhotite. Deposition of quartz ceased after the pyrrhotite, was formed, and the later-formed nonsulphide gangue consists chiefly of carbonates and fluorite. With, the advent of the carbonates the pyrrhotite was altered to fine-gained intergrowths of marcasite and pyrite. Excess iron from the pyrrhotite entered the intergrown carbonate, or was precipitated as magnetite. Some solution of the cassiterite occurred at this stage, the tin being redeposited chiefly as stimnite replacement rims around the residual cassitellrite grains. The TauTona (Sotho for Great Lion) Mine near Carletonville, which is one of AngloGold AshantiÆs most profitable operations in South Africa, has started a multi-million dollar expansion project that is expected to extend the operational life of the mine by at least three years. The project will also secure some 1900 jobs for existing workers and contract workers. The $US140 million project entails the development of the orebody to a record depth of almost 4 km underground. It means that TauTona, which already mines gold at the deepest levels in the world, will deepen its mining activities from 3600 m to a new record depth of 3910 m. There is great anticipation about the expansion program, especially because of new technology that will contribute to a safer working environment. It includes a simplified hoisting system that will minimise safety risks in conveyance activities. Due to the unique nature of this project, depth below surface and working through a three-tier shaft system, various innovative measures were incorporated into the planning of the endeavour. Special support equipment was designed to reduce cycle times and enable the crews to install the extensive support, prescribed by the mineÆs rock engineering department, right up to the face before every blast. Both declines dip at 23¦. The personnel/material (P/M) shaft is 4.4 m wide x 3.9 m high. This shaft is unique in that the conveyance will have an onboard driver. The rock shaft is 4.5 m wide x 3.6 m high. Rock will be hoisted with two, ten-tonne overturning skips. In both cases, P/M and rock, the winders were designed for the highest duty cycle, which is encountered during sinking.

The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

Dugald River Mine (DRM) is located approximately 85 km north-east of Mount Isa, and 65 km northwest of Cloncurry, in the north-west Queensland Minerals Province of Australia. DRM is an underground operation and includes an above ground processing area, a 200 ha tailings facility, two waste rock dumps and associated infrastructure. The mining method is conventional underground longhole open stoping and downhole benching of a lead/zinc deposit within a black slate environment. The deposit is estimated to contain ~53 Mt of zinc and lead, which will be mined over a 30-year period. During operations, waste rock is segregated into either Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) or Non-Acid Forming (NAF) based primarily on the sulfide concentration of the rock. In particular, the NAF waste rock is an asset and is used for various small construction projects during operation; however, its primary use is for rehabilitation work at closure. Since beginning operations in 2017, DRM has generated more NAF than was originally anticipated. Whilst this is an excellent asset to DRM, it did pose a logistical problem of where to store the additional NAF for the life-of-mine and how to manage the run-off. DRM experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot conditions and periods of rainfall between November to April, and relatively dry and mild conditions between May to October. Majority of rainfall is received between January and February with an annual average rainfall of 501.1 mm. Short and intense rainfall events are common. DRM’s above ground infrastructure is land-locked between two large ephemeral watercourses, making the significant expansion of any assets challenging from a permitting/regulation and cost perspective. MMG is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and is committed to adapting to a changing climate through operations and closure. Following extensive studies DRM opted to store the additional NAF material into the adjoining NAF Dam and concurrently upgrade a previously minor sediment basin into a highly engineered sediment basin which relies on automatic flocculant dosing to meet the required discharge quality limits. This basin is climate-resilient in that the dosing system can be adjusted to counter high intensity extended rainfall events which produce highly variable inflow water quality. This abstract broadly describes how DRM designed and implemented an engineering innovation to enable the site to meet the changing climatic challenges. The abstract then describes the process to design the sediment basin and how the dosing rate was established and validated. Finally, the abstract comments on the effectiveness of the sediment basin and how it has revolutionised DRM’s approach to water treatment and management; all whilst minimising the disturbance footprint of the operation

Broken Hill South Limited's discovery of phosphate deposits in the northwest of Queensland in 1966 prompted intensive exploration which has proved phosphate rock in excess of 2,000 million tons at ten separate deposits. Systematic exploration for phosphate in Australia was initiated by the Company in 1964. Early in 1966, an investigation of oil wells in the Georgina Basin in the Northern Territory and Queensland revealed widespread anomalous phosphate in early Middle Cambrian Beetle Creek Formation and Thorntonia Lime- stone. Phosphorites recognised in oil wells in the southeastern part of the Basin, Queensland, led to the discovery of the Duchess deposits, Exploration of the Beetle Creek Formation since 1966 has disclosed nine other sizeable deposits north of Duchess around the eastern margin of the Basin. The Lady Annie and the adjoining Lady Jane deposits, by reason of their location, 160 miles south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, are expected to be the first to be brought into production. Beneficiation testing and engineering investigations commenced in 1967. Transport between the deposits and various port sites in the Gulf of Carpentaria has been extensively studied and a slurry pipeline as a means of transport to a deep water island port, is now being investigated.

BackgroundIn March 1990 Pasminco resolved to replace and increase the capacity of the underground pumping system at the Southern Operations, Broken Hill. The existing pump station was built 23 years ago while the rising main had been in service for 38 years and was subject to frequent failure.The old system was a conventional slurry/clear water separation and multi-stage pumping system. It was inadequate in the following areas:ò insufficient capacity to handle current and expected future flows;ò unable to consistently dewater lower production areas; ò pumping capacity restricted sandfilling rates;ò dirty water dams had insufficient settling capacity and were difficult to de-sludge;ò the operating costs of dewatering were high; ò it was labour intensive; andò it did not offer enough protection to the 25 level loading station.

The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.

Mining operations require detailed and precise methods and procedures for the optimum selection of ore from waste. A fundamental procedure applied to achieve this selection is accurate sampling. The key parameter to accurate sampling is an understanding of the degree of heterogeneity of the key element contained within a sampling mass. This paper will describe the methods applied for the calculation of the fundamental sampling error and the techniques used to achieve a representative sample in the Fimiston Open Pit, Kalgoorlie.The utilisation of Pierre Gy's sampling theory has optimised the blast hole sample quality and quantity for submission to the assay laboratory. This has resulted in reduced cost and optimised assay reliability in statistical terms. Similarly the analysis of exploration drill holes for resource definition has optimised drilling procedures in terms of the drilling method, sample length and sample quantity.

A methodology for the fatigue life estimation of load haul dumpers, employed in underground platinum mines, has been developed and applied. This method entails the quantification of operating conditions by means of stress measurements. The measurements are then translated into a fatigue loading factor for a finite element model. The results of this analysis are then used to compare all the critical connections in the structure to detail categories in relevant fatigue codes, and predict a life in operating hours for the vehicle structure. The method was applied on a specific model and the results of this analysis were compared to actual failure occurrences with reasonable accuracy. It is intended that the methodology be embedded into performance specifications and purchasing contracts and that technology transfer to OEMs be achieved. Based on the experience of this project and other similar exercises it is estimated that structural life expectancies may be increased across a typical fleet of trackless mining vehicles (LHDs, drill rigs, utility vehicles, dump trucks) by at least 20 per cent.

The importance of mine ventilation to health and safety in both coal and metalliferous mines has been long recognised. The primary and secondary ventilation systems in most metalliferous mines incur 50 per cent or more of the total mine electrical power consumption and frequently about 10 per cent of total underground mine operating costs. The requirements for ventilation-related horizontal and vertical development, fans and cooling have a significant impact on mine capital costs and also on mine schedules and start-up times and hence cash flows. There are increasing pressures on regulators and miners to reduce airborne contaminants such as diesel particulatematter, nitrogen dioxide and heat (wet bulb temperatures), and significant pressures to reducegreenhouse gases such as fugitive methane emissions from coalmines and the carbon dioxide footprint of both coal and metalliferous mines. Many previously Australian miners are now globaloperators and have extensive overseas mining operations where local ventilation standards and expertise may not be consistent with Australian practices. The role of the site ventilation officer is also changing with strict new requirements for the statutory position being introduced into Queensland metalliferous mines and the potential for this to become more widespread. Recent regulator and parliamentary review committees have identified systematic shortcomings in mine ventilation compliance, and statutory certificates in both Queensland and NSW now require continuing professional development to maintain currency. Public and investor support for mining are also increasingly contingent on safe, healthy and environmentally responsible practices and the standards for these are frequently tightening. Good ventilation design and operating practices that are consistently well executed therefore contribute significantly not only to a safe and healthy mine but also to a productive and cost-effective operation and the ongoing social licence to operate. There are a variety of ways of providing technical design and oversight into a mine’s ventilation systems; this paper explores some current trends in ventilation standards and statutory requirements, as well as ways to support and develop mine ventilation staff for both domestic and international operations and also the emerging senior technical roles of Group/Principal/Corporate mine ventilation engineer.
