This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. Ferromanganese nodules form a specific category of widespread marine mineral deposits. The tremendous increase in metal prices during the last decade raised new economic interest in their exploration. The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), which had been engaged in nodule research in the 1970s and 1980s, renewed its activities on this subject based on an exploration contract with the International Seabed Authority, signed in 2006. BGRÆs licence area û comprising 75 000 km2 û is located between the Clarion and the Clipperton Fracture Zones. In this so-called nodule belt north of the equator the sea floor reaches water depths of >4000 m. About 900 million tonnes of manganese nodules are expected there. In this study the fine-scale distribution of important elements in manganese nodules and crusts from a variety of locations was investigated. Besides 11 samples from the RV SONNE cruise SO-25, numerous samples from additional locations were included in this study for comparison. In general, the sample suite includes two genetic types of precipitates, manganese nodules and Co-rich crusts. A detailed characterisation of the distribution of major, minor and important trace elements in manganese nodules based on in situ microenergy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (¦-EDXRF) analysis is presented here. The data are compared with bulk major, minor and trace element data as well as with quantitative electron probe microanalysis (EMPA) data sets. The element distribution maps and profiles produced by ¦-EDXRF analysis with short or extended (in case of profiles) counting times, allow precise selection of æregions of interestÆ for further detailed investigation using high spatial resolution techniques (eg scanning electron microscope (SEM)-EDAX; laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (LA-ICPMS); isotopic studies).

The Murrin Murrin deposit is located about 210 km NNE of Kalgoorlie and 50 km E of Leonora in the North Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia at latitude 28¦ 50'S. longitude 121¦ 54'E on the Laverton (SH 51-2) 1:250 000 map sheet. The tenements are held by Anaconda Nickel NL. Geological investigations between 1994 and 1996 resulted in resource calculations being completed for the ten lateritic nickel cobalt deposits shown in Figure 1. At a 0.8 per cent nickel cut-off the resources at May 1996 for the nine deposits are 116.8 Mt at 1.10 per cent nickel and 0.082 per cent cobalt. The nickel-cobalt mineralisation is contained in a laterite profile developed over Archaean serpentinised peridotites. A bankable feasibility study has been completed and the project is scheduled to be in production by the beginning of 1998.

I lamata is within the Morobe Goldfield (7¦ 25' S, 146¦ 39' E) on the Wau (SB 55-14),1:250,000 scale map sheet (Fig 1). The deposit is 13 km SW of Wau, within the headwaters of the Upper Watut River, at an average elevation of 2000 m. The steep mountainous terrain is covered by dense tropical rainforest and access is by helicopter or by foot track. The deposit has been described previously by Wells and Young (1991) and 1)enwer. Leach and Mowat (1995). Data collected to late 1996 have been used to estimate an Inferred Resource of 9.2 Mt at 3.1 g/t gold using a cutoff of 0.5 g/t. This contains a high grade portion for which an Inferred Resource of 1.2 Mt at 9.7 grt gold has been estimated using a 5.0 g/t cutoff.

Conventional batch cell and FASTFLOT pilot plant studies of reverse flotation of coarse marcasite and pyrite (100 - 400 μm) to reduce the sulphidic sulphur content of a rutile concentrate, were undertaken. The batch cell experiments found no significant improvement in sulphur removal with acid wash and copper activation of marcasite and pyrite. Batch cell trials also identified potential difficulties of conventional mechanical cell plants operated at 40 per cent w/w solids. The FASTFLOT 250 B-2 pilot plant trials indicated that with a 0.6 - 0.7 per cent w/w feed sulphur content, target product grade can be met on a routine basis by a three-stage FASTFLOT plant floating coarse marcasite and pyrite. The trials found that 150 g/t PAX dosage and 15 minutes conditioning time are adequate reagentisation for 40 per cent w/w solids feed to the FASTFLOT plant.

The kinetics of the hydrogen reduction of iron oxides in granular calcined bauxite were studied at 550-1,050°C in a shallow bed reactor. The iron oxides behaved as a dispersion of particulate iron oxide in a porous alumina matrix in which the iron oxide particles were reduced independently. The observed rates of reaction were found to be virtually independent of the bauxite grain size. At 800,°C and above, the reduction was multistage, Le.1. Fe203 +2Al203 (matrix) ?2FeAl204, and2. FeAl204? Fe0 +Al203.Reaction 1 was very rapid. Reaction 2 was much slower, the latter stages being controlled, at least in part, by phYSIcal changes of the Fe0 and a-Al203 produced in the reaction. Owing to the observed nature of the material, the reaction rate controlling steps could not be determined.

The performance of prototype magnetic resonance sensors suited to mineral measurement in conveyor, slurry or portable applications is described. The sensors can be positioned around conveyors and modified slurry pipes, providing deep penetration of the sensing field, relative insensitivity to ore surface conditions and high mineral discrimination. Measurements on slurry, concentrates and ores sourced from mine operations are presented for two applications. Firstly, the quantitative measurement of chalcopyrite in slurry was demonstrated in laboratory measurements. In a calibration test, a standard error of 0.1 wt per cent and detection limit of 0.3 wt per cent was obtained. Secondly, results were obtained for the discrimination of iron ore texture. Signals were readily observed using measurement integration times of seconds to several minutes, depending on ore material. The results demonstrate the feasibility of online quantitative analysis of selected minerals in processing applications using magnetic resonance.

The Earth's Upper Mantle is dominantly peridotitic but in convergent margin regions, such as the S.W. Pacific, subduction of oceanic crust gives greater chemical and petrological diversity to upper mantle petrology and petrogenesis. Examination of currently active, Quaternary and Tertiary volcanism in the S.W. Pacific, particularly seeking information from ocean floor sampling to characterize the basement to island arcs and to investigate active spreading centres, consistently points to parental magmas of basaltic to picritic character. However, these parental magmas are chemically diverse and it is not possible to designate a characteristic 'island arc' or 'convergent margin' petrogenesis in the sense of a characteristic mantle source composition and a charactistic partial melting regime. In this respect, magma genesis at convergent margins contrasts with that at oceanic spreading centres. Our studies emphasize the importance of source peridotite ranging from 'fertile lherzolite' (i.e. compositions with 3-4% CaO, A12O3, 0.3-0.5% Na2O) to refractory harzburgite (

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

The first difficulty encount.ered in preparing this paper was to find a definition of the word "special" as applied to steel. The first thought is "obviously any grade not mild steel" but this is an over-simplification, because the term "mild steel" covers a series of carbon ranges, each found from experience to be especially suited to the production of a particular rolled section.Even if the Australian structural mild steels are excluded it is found that no part of the plant here is independent of special steel.The face-man on Iron Monarch makes his bench safe by barring down with a 0.6% carbon steel bar. He bores a hole into the ironstone with a 0.75-0.8% carbon steel drill, driven by a jackhammer which is built of a variety of special steels. After it is shot down, the stone is lifted by an electric shovel, very few of whose steel components fall into the general category of structural grades of mild steel.Further special steels are met with in the truck into which the stone is loaded, the hauling electric locomotive, and the rails on which these .run. Even the permanent way uses more than one grade, e.g., the crossings experiencing heavy service have their frogs built with austenitic manganese steel inserts.Special steels play their part in the overhead crane which tips these trucks, and in the crushers into which they discharge, and so they can be followed right through the production line, and they are still there at the seaward end of the ship loading boom at the head of the WhyalIa ore jetty.

TasmaniaÆs mineral endowment has resulted in 600 abandoned mines. Commonly occurring sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can generate acid drainage and also mobilise heavy metals. Due to the StateÆs steep topography and high rainfall the risk to water quality in the receiving environments is significant. Surface waters impacted by abandoned mine sites typically showed high sulfate and metal distribution at pH range of 2.0 to 5.0. The impacted waters generally showed metal distribution in the high acid/extreme metal to low acid/low metal range. A similar trend was shown by sulfate distribution. Elevated levels of metals and sulfate downstream from several abandoned mine sites indicated that active sulfide oxidation is occurring and these sites may be potential point sources of metal pollution in the receiving environment. High correlation between metal and sulfate distribution suggests that sulfate distribution in surface waters may be used as a cost-effective investigation tool for preliminary assessment of acid drainage.

At Neavesville gold-silver (electrum) mineralization occurs in steeply-dipping zones of intense fracturing, brecciation and quartz veining within rhyolitic pyroclastics, carbohaceous shales and andesites. Hydro- thermal alteration extends over an area of greater than 3 by 1.5 km. In rhyolitic tuffs, highly silicified zones containing quartz- adularia-illite assemblages are flanked by less silicified assemblages composed of albite, illite-montmorillonite and chlorite. The mineralogy ana sequence of alteration are comparable with the alteration zones which envelop the steam-producing fissures of the active Wairakei and Broadlands geothermal fields. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from five fissure veins in the Neavesville field show maximum homogenisation temperatures ranging from 220 - 260¦C and salinities of 0.0 - 1.1 wt. % NaCl equivalent, which cover a similar range to actual measured temperatures and salinities in geothermal fluids at Wairakei aria riroaolan¦s. The age of the rhyolitic pyroclastics and related alteration and mineralization is probably Pliocene and Neavesville therefore represents a fossil geothermal system.

The Honeymoon Well nickel sulphide deposits are located in the Agnew-Wiluna greenstone belt, about 45 km south of Wiluna. Both disseminated and massive sulphide nickel deposits are hosted by komatiitic rocks within the deformed and metamorphosed Honeymoon Well ultramafic complex. Fresh ultramafic bedrock is covered by up to 50 m of highly conductive transported material which greatly hampers both exploration and understanding of the bedrock geology. In the early-1970s, mineralisation was discovered by diamond drilling geochemical anomalies defined by wide-spaced percussion drilling over ultramafics that had been outlined by ground magnetics. Subsequent drilling has defined a resource of 158 Mt at 0.71 per cent nickel (based on 0.4 per cent nickel cut-off, 300 m below surface, December 1995) in four deposits. Over the life of the project a wide range of geophysical techniques have been used including airborne and ground magnetics, time domain clectromagnetics (EM), induced polarisation (IP)/resistivity, gravity and downhole techniques including EM, IP and physical property Measurements.

Significant advances in regional geochemical exploration techniques have been made over the last 5 years in the search for gold deposits. This has occurred largely by the development of the bulk cyanide ex- tractable gold (BLEG) also known as the Bulk Cyanide Leach (BCL) tech- nique. The technique has been developed and designed for Australian conditions and has two main ad- vantages over the pan concentrate technique preferred by many ex- plorationalists, viz:,. 1. It is designed to collect ultra fine gold common to epithermal and other north Queensland types of gold deposits. 2. The large sample (approx.5 kg) allows very low detection levels, ranging between 0.1 and 0.05 ppb Au. The use of the BLEG technique in exploration has led to the discovery of the Wirralie gold deposit and numerous other epithermal gold prospects previously undetected by pan concentrate and minus 80 mesh (pathfinder elements) surveys in the Drummond Basin.

A nuclear technique for the analysis of copper in bulk materials has been developed and successfully field tested at Mount Isa Mines Limited. The technique utilises the gamma-ray resonance scattering process. A bulk analyser based on this technique gives a rapid and accurate measurement of the percentage by weight of copper or nickel aver- aged over a large mass of sample, typically 20 kg. The only sample preparation required for accurate analysis is crushing to -2.5 cm. At Mount Isa over 100 mineral samples covering a wide range of rock types and copper contents were analysed. Bulk analyser assays and chemical laboratory assays agreed closely for underground pillar-extraction and geolog- ical chip samples, conveyor belt samples, and finely ground samples from the ore concentrator. For the concentrator samples, the root mean square deviation between bulk analyser and chem- ical laboratory assays was 0.06 wt.% copper. The chemical assay errors for these samples were about 0.06 wt.%

Polyacrylamide flocculating agent has been used in the Leaching Division of the Risdon Works of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd since October, 1960. Since the introduction, the.: number of thickeners in use in the continu-ous thickening stage has been reduced from eight to three; there has been an increase of 25% in throughput and a reduc-tion of solids in.:thickener overflow from 3-4 gòpòl . solids to 0.5 g.p.l. solids. Reagent addition has been at the rate of 0.25. lb SEPARAN, NP10 per ton solids.Additionally there has been a gain of 3% in current efficiency as the direct result of the addition of SEPARAN NP10 to purified cadmium sulphate solution prior to electrolysis for cadmium metal. A smoother deposit has resulted and it has been possible to increase deposition time between strip-pings from 47 to 71 hours. However, there has been a slight increase the lead content of the cadmium-metal produced.

"In this paper, the reduction and separation behaviour of iron and slag in carbon composite iron ore pellets has been investigated experimentally using an electric resistance furnace simulating a rotary hearth furnace process. The factors that affect the formation of iron nuggets, such as temperature, holding time, molecular ratio of C/O and basicity, are discussed. Results show that the reduction of iron ore, carburisation of reduced iron and the composition and quantity of slag are very important for producing iron nuggets. Through optimisation of process parameters, iron nuggets can be formed below 1300¦C when holding time is 20 minutes, C/O is 0.7 and basicity less than 0.5. Batu Hijau is a calc-alkaline, island arc porphyry copper-gold deposit located in the southwest corner of Sumbawa Island in the Banda archipelago of southern Indonesia. Proven and probable reserves are 913 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.53 per cent copper (10.631 billion pounds Cu) and 0.41 g/t gold (389 tonnes Au). Construction of the deposit infrastructure began in October 1996, and formal approval for the project mobilisation was granted by the Indonesian government in May 1997. Preoperational testing and start-up of the first grinding line is scheduled for mid-year 1999.Copper and gold mineralisation are genetically related to at least three tonalite porphyry dykes and small plugs which intrude a quartz diorite stock that was emplaced into andesitic to dacitic pyroclastic rocks and lava flows. Faults are uncommon, and where they occur they do not significantly displace hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation zones.

This data is intended to provide a quantative cost comparison of one 40 800 kg. pull down rotary blast hole drill versus two smalter drills in the 18 100 kg. pull down class. While this cost analysis is affected by blast design, this paper is not intended to be a treatise on blasting theory and therefore places more emphasis on costs than on blast design. All costs, prices and production rates in this paper are estimates and should be used for comparison purposes only. The drills are sized in order to maintain a production rate sufficient to stay ahead of a dragline that is excavating in an average overburden (sandstone and shale). The large drill will use 270mm bit and penetrate at a rate of 0.012 m/s (scheduled basis). The small drill will use 170mm bit and penetrate at a rate of 0.010 m/s (scheduled basis).

Low-grade manganese ore from Sandur, India containing 28.2 per cent manganese and 20.9 per cent iron was roasted with sulphating agents, viz ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid. The effects of temperature of roasting (300 - 800°C), time (15 - 120 minutes) and amount of sulphating agent (0.5 to 2.5 times stoichiometric amount) were studied. Under optimum conditions, it was possible to extract 92 per cent manganese with 0.5 per cent iron at a temperature of 700°C for 90 minutes duration with stoichiometric ammonium sulphate. Further increase in quantity of ammonium sulphate has marginal effect on manganese extraction.Similar studies were carried out with sulphuric acid, and an extraction of about 87 per cent manganese with similar iron contamination was achieved at a temperature of 700°C for 60 minutes duration with stoichiometric quantity of the reagent. Selective extraction of manganese with respect to iron is discussed.
