Information is a key ingredient for successful mineral exploration and development. Whether identifying potential exploration localities from a map, interpreting technical reports or searching a register for operators past and present, the common aim is a parcel of information from which the enquirer can make a decision. Traditional information gathering often requires days or weeks of manual research, studying maps, files, reports etc, before consolidating the results into an investment proposal. In recent times, such methods have largely been replaced by Information Technology, making the process much faster, easier and more centralised. However, notwithstanding some very successful technology implementations, the general rush to computerise everything in sight has left many organisations struggling to cope with the management of large volumes of diverse information. Information management is now recognised as the most important factor in determining the success of information technology implementation. The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy (DME) has established a detailed information management strategy to underpin the rapid advance of computer technology within the organisation. A broad base of timely and reliable information is gradually becoming more accessible. It is envisaged that the availability of combined spatial, textual and scientific information will provide a sound basis for decision-making within the Department and the mining industry at large. Although information held by DME will be available at all times (24 hours on-line), its security and confidentiality will be guaranteed. The production of the DME system is aimed at satisfying the corporate objective to facilitate and promote mineral exploration and development. This paper outlines some current developments in the system.

German hard coal mining operations have decreased for more than 40 years. Current political decisions are leading to a discontinuation of subsidised black coal mining by the year 2018. This decision will, however, be reviewed once again in the year 2012. The enormous increases in productivity, which were achieved in previous years, have so far not led to an achievement of market requirements. Coal mining at depth of more than 1200 m in multiple seam environments is not yet competitive in global comparison. In 2008 the 24 faces left in eight mines produced about 20 million tonnes of usable steam coal. Management and the workforce will be reduced in parallel; from today until 2012 by more than half. The average age of personnel is increasing dramatically and nearly no new personnel are recruited. With this background in mind, increasing continuously coal mining productivity becomes more and more difficult. Above all, this goal was reached by mechanisation, then by increasing the mining machine power and then by enhanced machine control systems. The first attempts to automatically operate full face equipment from above ground were in the early 1980s. After successful automation of the face equipment, the emphasis is now on mine logistics. Autonomous monorail transport was introduced and tested in 2007. Since the development rate of machine improvements has its limits, the focus is on the full interaction of the total production system. Here information technology (IT) becomes important; the driver for more productivity. Actual developments aim for the complete and general homogeneous IT infrastructure both above ground as well as underground. The explosive environment needs high level investments in safe technology, eg access points for WLAN and fibre optics for underground use (ATEX certification). New technology availability also drives the enhancements of management and process control systems. Innovations in the mining industry often comprise technology advances through the adoption of well-known technologies. With virtual reality (VR) teaching and training systems advanced computational instruments, both in software and hardware development, were applied in the German coal mining industry for ten years. Widening lists of applications as well as the encouraging achievements show the economical benefits of investing in virtual reality technology both for teaching and training and for knowledge management. The paper discusses the actual technical achievements as well as in IT infrastructure utilisation and also in employment of virtual reality based systems. Special focus and deeper insight will be given to the fibre optics and WLAN hardware integration as well as software developments. The pocket personal computer (PC) is used to enhance underground material transport and data acquisition. The knowledge-based maintenance system (KBMS) integrates real-time virtual reality knowledge elements, such as repair process descriptions. It gives access to expert documentation by intelligent search algorithms and 3D representations of major mining machinery.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of froth fl otation for the recovery of gold from the gravity tailing stream of the former Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) operation in Ballarat. The P80 of the tailings was determined by screen analysis as 1 mm, with test work conducted on as received material along with samples ground to P80 sizes of 47, 78 and 134 microns. Laboratory scale batch flotation tests were conducted at both natural and elevated pH to investigate the impact of pyrite depression on gold recovery. Results indicated that although an increase in grade from approximately 0.7 g/t to 3 g/t was achievable at a natural pH and a P80 of 134 micron, gold recovery was low at just 35 per cent. Finer grind sizes were found to have an adverse effect on both grade and recovery. Future efforts will be focused on the sub 310 micron size fraction of the tailings, which was revealed to contain approximately 85 per cent of the available gold and may be amenable to cyanidation or ultra-fine gravity treatment.

Heap leach pads are composed of mined ore, usually crushed, disposed on liners to be processed with leach solutions, and the tail of the process is called “spent ore” which are then transported by conveyor belts to be disposed into dumps. It is often to observe stability problems in these dumps, that could affect the equipment working on it and the continuity of the whole mine process. These problems are related to an excess of water content at the spent ore, therefore the operational efforts are focused onto control this geotechnical parameter.This work presents the results of different geotechnical laboratory testing, using samples of spent ore of a mining operation in the north of Chile. In the last 10 years, 3 campaigns have been made to get samples. Valuable information was obtained to identify how specific operational/metallurgical factors could affect the geotechnical behaviour of the spent ore. Special attention is given to the decision to change the metallurgical process adding salt to the heap leach process and its impact to its hydraulic conductivity.Historically, the process has been based on the leaching of oxides and sulphides materials, in separate campaigns, in which it is possible to observe different geotechnical response in the spent ore generated. Recently, it was implemented a new process in which the materials are blended and salt is added, to improve metallurgical performance in terms of recovery. This change generate impacts in the dump, since the geotechnical parameters are affected; decreasing hydraulic conductivity in about one order of magnitude (explained by the salt added).Changes are shown in the geotechnical parameters of the spent ore, considering that the mining source is the same, and how the operational process and dump design are affected.CITATION:Rimmelin, R and Vergara, C, 2018. Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

Bentonites and active earths from N.S.W., previously analysed with respect to occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties have been evaluated for use as bonding agents in quartzose moulding sands in terms of green properties and behaviour both with and without coal dust for iron castings poured at 1400°C.INTRODUCTIONIn the paper by Loughnan .and See (Part I) the occurrence, mineralogy and physical properties of the fuller's earth and bentonites of New South Wales were discussed and it was shown that some of the materials approached the quality of Wyoming bentonite. In the present paper the same samples from Marulan (Bl), Boggabri (B2), Wingen (B3), Muswellbrook (B6), Swansea (B8), Dubbo (89) and Trida (Bll) have been investigated with respect to their potential value as bonding agents in compounded moulding sands. Inaddition, the -20 micron fractions of the Boggabri (B2t) and Swansea (B8t,> were recovered and the former converted to a sodium clay, in order to assesE; the beneficiation possibilities. The presence of cyanide soluble copper in gold ores can give rise to serious operational and economical difficulties in CIP and CIL operations. Cyanide consumption can result in the ore being uneconomic to treat by conventional means. Loading of copper onto carbon can also have deleterious effects on gold recovery and subsequent stripping and bullion recovery. The recovery of gold from high copper ores has been previously reviewed by Muir, LaBrooy and Cao (1989). Work undertaken for Mt Gibson Gold Project by Australian Mining Advisors with the assistance of the Chemistry Centre (WA) resulted in the patenting of a process and subsequent construction of a plant at Mt Gibson to overcome some of the difficulties encountered with copper. This paper discusses some of the work which was undertaken during laboratory investigations prior to commissioning of the plant and some further considerations for the treatment of high copper gold ores.

The phase equilibria in the Al2O3–TiOx system were investigated in wide ranges of temperature and oxygen partial pressure: 1300~1600°C and 10-16.6~10-8 atm, respectively. The equilibrium phases and their compositions were identified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), respectively. Most noticeably, a wide range of pseudobrookite solid solution was found in equilibrium with almost pure alumina. At each temperature, the cationic ratio expressed as RTi = nTi/(nAl + nTi)) of the pseudobrookite solid solution showed a noteworthy dependency on the oxygen partial pressure. This resulted in the formation of a broad range of pseudobrookite solid solutions, ranging from Al2TiO5 (RTi = 1/3) to Ti3O5 (RTi = 1.0). Complete miscibility within the pseudobrookite solid solution was observed at 1600°C, with only a minor miscibility gap becoming evident below 1500°C. Based on the results obtained in the present study, the behaviours of Al2TiO5 pseudobrookite have implications in two key domains: (1) understanding changes in the physical properties of the materials, and (2) elucidating the evolution of Al–Ti complex oxide inclusions in liquid steel which can deteriorate the steel cleanliness.

The Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Board, Perth, has recently con- structed two major sewerage tunnels in the metropolitan area and a further one is under construction. These tunnels were constructed in sand, sandstone and limestone. The Tamala Limestone is a Pleistocene calcareous dune sand which now varies in com position from loose sand to cemented rock. Investigation techniques included surface mapping, auger and diamond core drilling, seismic refraction geophysics and mechanical testing. The variable nature of the ground caused difficulties in all aspects of the investigation, particularly in core recovery and seismic work. The Beenyup Tunnel, 2.25m in diameter and 3440m long was excavated with a Dosco TBM 1800 machine and shield with precast concrete Charcon Universal bolted segment lining. The Burns Beach Sewer Tunnel, 1.27m in diameter and 860m long was hand excavated with precast reinforced concrete lining pipes jacked continuously behind an excavation

Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.

The four-dimensional (4D) network relaxation method, originally developed by Akaike in 1999, uses Lagrange relaxation and is known for its ability to include the price change and possible better outputs, but the computation time is huge. However, the continuous advancement in computer technologies allows the use of higher-speed computers with more memory capacity. Therefore, in this paper the authors have tried to implement the method with adjustments and improvements in its algorithm to suit the current computing system. As a result, the computation time has been drastically reduced and more constraints can be included, which makes the scheduling a more realistic one. The case study of an open pit gold mine with 129 500 blocks can be solved considering the capacity constraints in 71 seconds. In previous case studies, the mined ore had to be processed or disposed of immediately. Now, stockpiling can be included as another option. Since the details of the algorithm are still being improved, the computation time is a little longer than the previous cases without the stockpiling option. However, it is found that scheduling with the stockpiling option is possible in a reasonable time. In conclusion, the 4D network relaxation method has become more useful with advances in computer technologies and provides better results.

"The Corridor Sands deposit is situated approximately 190 km north east of Maputo, Mozambique adjacent to the paleo-mouth of the Limpopo River. This deposit is one of the worldÆs largest known economically viable resource of titanium, accounting for approximately one third of the global resource. As part of the pre-feasibility and feasibility study for development of the Corridor Sands project, various geological and geotechnical investigations were undertaken, selected results of which are presented in this paper. These investigations have enabled a detailed understanding of the material characteristics of the orebody as well as the tailings materials, such as the fines, to be developed. These material characteristics have had a significant impact on the selection of the mining and disposal methods currently being implemented."

The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. In most mining operations the ore undergoes several processes such as drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, crushing, grinding and liberation to become the final salable product. Drilling and blasting is an important step in this process chain and itÆs results such as fragmentation, muckpile shape and looseness, dilution, damage and rock softening effect the efficiency of downstream processes. The value created per ton of broken ore is the difference between the price it commands when sold as the final product and the cost to produce it. Traditionally, the total process in the mining industry is classified into two groups as mining and milling. These are managed as separate cost centres inspite of the interdependency. Each process has a budget and production target and emphasis is usually on maximising production (tons) and minimising cost rather than the overall profitability of the whole business unit. The efficiency of each process is considered to be satisfactory as long as they are within budget and meet the production targets. The mine and mill managers usually try to optimise each process independently rather than the entire process. This paper discusses the potential pitfalls of decreasing the drilling and blasting cost per ton of broken rock without considering its impact on downstream processes. It introduces a holistic approach to blast optimisation by identifying and measuring the leverage that blast results have on different downstream processes and then optimising the blast design to achieve the results that maximise the overall profitability rather than just minimising the drilling and blasting costs. This paper demonstrates the benefits of such a holistic approach to blasting based on computer model simulations and field studies from metal and open cut coal mining.

Tailings management trade-off studies are done for all mining projects. There is wide variability in these studies as their approach, details and outcomes are determined by the experience and focus of the project team. While some of these approaches may consider the whole life cycle of the project others may focus only on capital and operating costs and direct environmental impacts. A complete life cycle approach is not standard practice. This paper describes an approach to implementation of formalised life cycle assessment (LCA) following ISO 14044 to tailings management trade-off studies. The paper describes the implementation of the methodological framework for the LCA, ie goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory analysis, life cycle impact assessment and life cycle interpretation. This standardised approach to implementing tailings management trade-off studies following the LCA approach will contribute to the state-of-the-practice in sustainable mine development.

The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. The last decade has seen a major increase in use of the discrete fracture network (DFN) approach applied to cave mining problems, often integrated within more complex geomechanical simulations. Because the value of the DFN model directly depends on the quality and quantity of available field data, there is the need to apply dedicated mapping procedures to collect sufficient structural data at the required engineering scale. This paper attempts to address several key questions about DFN modelling; for example: are current methods for fracture mapping suitable for DFN modelling? What are the critical parameters that we need to measure and what do we need to change in the current practice? Particularly at the earlier stages of a cave project, engineers may have to account for the lack of appropriate data, which manifests itself in the form of increased uncertainty and the difficulty to characterise variability in an objective manner using a limited set of data. DFN models could in principle be generated using limited data by assuming statistical distributions for the sampled parameters; however, engineers would need to be aware of the implications that such limited knowledge (and increased uncertainty) would have on stability analysis, fragmentation analysis and mine design. During the first five years of operation, the Lihir gold mine has steadily increased plant throughput rate to over 4 Mtpa, well above the original design capacity of 2.8 Mtpa. Understanding how future variations in ore type impact on plant performance has been an integral part of LihirÆs development program. This paper discusses the key drivers for significant improvements to the plant, including a second oxygen plant, a pilot flotation plant, an autoclave heat recovery circuit, a pebble crushing circuit and additional autoclave feed pumping capacity. The result is a process plant with the flexibility to accommodate variations in ore type without significant loss of throughput.

The Pilbara region, located in the north-west of Western Australia, is significant as the second-largest source of iron ore on the planet. Iron ore mines owned and operated by Pilbara Iron are located within the Hamersley Basin. This paper refers to the Greater Paraburdoo mines, the 4WEST and 4EAST pits, located on the southern margin of the Hamersley Basin. The groundwater model refers to ephemeral watercourses: Seven Mile and Pirraburdoo creeks, which are adjacent to the two pits, and Ratty Springs, located upstream from 4WEST and within Pirraburdoo creek. The spring and creeks hold cultural heritage significance for local Aboriginal communities. Two of these, the Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga (GMY) and Innawonga native title claim groups, initiated hydrological work on the two creeks and Ratty Springs, with the aim of determining the affects of dewatering on the natural water flows of these systems. The numerical model used to simulate drawdown in the Pirraburdoo and Seven Mile Creeks was derived from PMWIN Pro software and covered an area of 77 km2. The modelling period was from January 1998 to December 2004, and the prediction period was from January 2005 to December 2015. The model has four layers and incorporated effects caused by mining voids, 4WEST and 4EAST pits, creek bed material, weathered bedrock below creeks and surrounding banded iron formations (BIF). The model has been calibrated using the trial-and-error method set down by Middelmis et al (2001). The current dewatering schedule (12 ML/day) in the 4WEST and 4EAST mining areas does not affect the water table levels in the adjacent creeks significantly or for any considerable periods of time. However, changes to mine plans may occur, for example, in response to changed commodity price and may lead to significant increase in rates of vertical advancement. This, in turn, affects dewatering schedules, as greater vertical advancement requires increased dewatering effort. When an accelerated mine plan is applied to the model and dewatering rates increased to 18 ML/day, drawdowns in the creeks are more noticeable. The model has therefore helped to indicate the extent to which increased dewatering rates may be acceptable, especially in terms of immediate and longer-term damage to riparian species, ie Melaleuca and Eucalypt. Predictions from the model may also allow mine planners to schedule decreased rates of vertical advancement, where these are required to meet environmental constraints.

The Gold Ridge Mine is an open-cut gold mine in the Solomon Islands. The mine is owned and operated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ross Mining NL. At the invitation of the Solomon Island Government, project construction commenced in July 1997 and gold production commenced in August 1998. The mine is the countryÆs first, and represents a major milestone in the development of the Solomon Islands. At the time of project approval and construction, there was a growing awareness in the country of the potential impacts of mining in the tropics, partly due to unfavourable publicity surrounding a number of other mining operations in the Pacific region. The management of environmental impacts was therefore an important consideration in the approval of the project, and continues to receive a high level of attention from the Government and community. Ross Mining did not commit to the Gold Ridge Project until it had satisfied itself that all waste rock and tailings could be safely contained on-site, and that the standards normally expected of a mine in Australia could be met. Ross Mining approached the approval, construction, and operation of the Gold Ridge Mine with a set of operating principles that met Government and community concerns. These were:best practice environmental management; operation of the mine in accordance with standards expected of mining operations in Australia; independent peer review of key technical aspects; on-going consultation with Government and community; and equitable transfer of wealth to landowners and the local community. As a consequence, the Gold Ridge Mine has developed into a successful mining operation with a high level of support from local landowners, the general community and the Central and Provincial Governments of the Solomon Islands.
