Byproduct coking is practised in three of the major Australian ironmaking centres, the Newcastle and Whyalla works of the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and the Port Kembla works of Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. Coking first commenced at Newcastle in 1915 and at Port Kembla in 1938. The installations established at these centres include coal cleaning facilities and com- plete byproduct streams. The Whyalla plant, because of its location is somewhat less extensive, having no coal cleaning plant and a comparatively restricted byproduct section. As new batteries have been built every opportunity has been taken to incorporate modern design features and improved operat- ing techniques. This has included the provision of equipment to reduce atmospheric and water pollution. A marked reduction of markets for byproducts has had serious repercussions on the profitability of this section of the Industry.

Over the last decade computers have become an essential element in assessing the economic feasibility of mining new mineral deposits and in assisting a variety of related support functions. A broad overview is given of the many technical application areas where computers are contributing to the mining industry with reference to work being done on the evaluation of drill hole information, mineral inventory modelling, ore reserve estimation, financial analysis, process simulation, process control, workshop job scheduling, PERT applications, and com- puter aided drafting. In all these areas the computer has greatly reduced the manual effort involved in looking at alternatives. It has had a significant effect in eliminating delays in revising calculations, or rescheduling activities to incorporate new data or cater for changing conditions, while at the same time providing more accurate and prompt information for the management decision making Process.

Thiourea has been recognised for a long time as an acid-stable complexant for gold. Generally, the use of thiourea has been shown to exhibit enhanced leaching kinetics compared to cyanide but suffers the disadvantage of excessive reagent consumption. Thiourea leaching is particularly com- patible with the extraction of gold from refractory ores. This is due to the need for an oxidative pretreatment to liberate the gold. Such pretreatments typically result in the production of an acidic residue. The application of novel thiourea leaching technologies to the extraction of gold from a bioleached pyrite concentrate was investigated. The interac- tion of leach variables with thiourea consumption and gold extraction was established. An economic assessment of thiourea leaching was compared with conventional cyanidation. The results indicated that gold leaching of the bioleached residue using thiourea compared very favourably with cyanidation.

A proper economic analysis of pit slope design must reflect the trade-off between the benefits and the increased risks of slope fail- ure inherent in steeper slope angles. However, no formal framework for a proper analysis existed to date. This paper describes the results of the past four years' effort in which a formal eco- nomic analysis framework was developed and tested through a case study. This framework, in essence, consists of the availability of tested procedures and com- puter programs. The procedures as well as the programs are divided into two broad functional categories; (1) the first category related to assessing the economic benefits and costs associated with various pit slope angles and (2) the second category that determines the overall financial impact which the assessed benefits and costs exert to the mine operator's overall economic stature.

The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

In the last decade, the use of advanced implicit modelling software/algorithms in mineral resource workflows has become a best practice in the mining industry. In most cases, these workflows can easily replicate the level of detail of explicitly modelled geometries, even for very complex deposits. These techniques are flexible and can produce fast results since software is responsible for generating 3D surfaces and solids based on geological and interpretation data. Nevertheless, depending on how unique and complex some deposits are, intense manual editing and input are required to honour the geological context and produce the desired outcome. The current geological modelling workflow at George Fisher Mine (GFM) is based on the semi-automatic built-in tool that generates stratigraphic sequences (stacked lithology layers) based on logging and mapping data. This tool (stratigraphic sequence from Leapfrog Geo™) works for the majority of areas in the mine but fails to capture observed mineralisation pinch-outs in operational areas and at extrapolated boundaries of the deposit. These pinch-outs have the potential to negatively impact grade forecasts if not resolved manually. Using built-in software tools only, the alternative for a more accurate model is to generate each individual layer and adding tens of thousands of manual interpretation points to honour pinch-outs (based on the amount of existing drilling in the mine and number of layers). This approach would require an estimated minimum of two to four years of a full-time employee (FTE) to be exhaustively completed. This study presents an automated approach to generate pinch-out points using a set of Python scripts that only take a few minutes to run. The newly generated points are then combined into the commercial software workflow as interpretation points, honouring observed pinch-outs. The remarkable time difference between approaches removes chance of manual errors and allows mine geologists to spend valuable time in validation and testing of scenarios, ensuring they are more representative of the deposit’s geology.

The automated measurement of rock fragmentation particle size distribution in the muck during muck excavation has been developing over the last 16 years. The introduction of stereo camera imaging of the muck has provided improved automated particle segmentation for image-based measurement algorithms. Recently, a new vision system processing algorithm has been developed. The inclusion of 2D texture in the analysis has provided a significant improvement in the definition of the finer size fractions, which has resulted in the automated analysis no longer requiring calibration.The previous stereo vision system algorithm required analysis calibration to account for poor ‘small particle’ definition in the 3D surface profile. This was because of the depth perception limitations of the stereo camera system at greater than 8 m. The new algorithm has been implemented on a number of shovel-installed vision systems, and the algorithm’s performance in automated analysis has been assessed against a diligent manual analysis of the same fragmentation images. The new algorithm provides improved distribution resolution and accuracy.CITATION:Noy, M J, 2015. Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. The Tamagawa Hot Spring, from which Ra-Pb-Sr-bearing barite precipitates, is a representative hot spring in a volcanic gas-bearing hydrothermal system associated with Quaternary andesitic to dacitic magmatic activity beneath the Yakeyama Volcano. Thermal water in the Tamagawa Hot Spring is divided into three types: Cl-SO4-type (Ohbuki hot spring: pH 1.2); SO4-type (pH 1.8 to 2.9); and neutral-type (pH 6.1). The concentrations of dissolved components in the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water are about ten times higher than in the SO4-type thermal water. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic signatures of the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal waters (0.703992 ¦ 0.000004 to 0.704032 ¦ 0.000006) are different from those of SO4-type thermal waters (0.704245 ¦ 0.000003) formed by the interaction of andesitic volcanic rocks (0.704065 ¦ 0.000007 to 0.704093 ¦ 0.000009) and groundwater derived from river water (0.704314 ¦ 0.000012 to 0.704519 ¦ 0.000013) in a shallower part of the hot spring area. The possible origins of Sr in the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water and in the SO4-type thermal water are different. The Sr isotopic ratios (0.704130 ¦ 0.000012 to 0.707556 ¦ 0.000014) of Aniai Formation andPreYakeyama Lake deposits occurring below the hot spring area are distinctly higher than those of the Cl-SO4-type thermal water. However, it is expected that a solidifying andesitic or dacitic magma which has similar Sr isotopic ratios of the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water, occur in the deep portion of the Tamagawa Hot Spring. The Cl-SO4-type thermal waters having low Sr isotopic ratios do not acquire their Sr isotopic signatures by interaction with strata below the hot spring area, but they are likely to reflect water interaction with a solidifying magma with low Sr isotopic ratios. Components including rare metals in Cl-SO4 type thermal water could be transported from a deeper part. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Coal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. They are a particular hazard because they typically occur without warning. During the past two years, three US coal miners were killed in two coal bursts, following a six-year period during which there were zero burst fatalities.This paper puts the US experience in the context of worldwide research into coal bursts. It focuses on two major longwall mining coalfields that have struggled with bursts for decades. The Utah experience displays many of the ‘classic’ burst characteristics, including deep cover, strong roof and floor rock, and a direct association between bursts and mining activity. In Colorado, the longwalls of the North Fork Valley (NFV) also work at great depth, but their roof and floor strengths are moderate, and most bursts have occurred during entry development or in headgates, bleeders or other outbye locations. The NFV bursts also are more likely to be associated with geologic structures and large magnitude seismic events. In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) systems have come under growing scrutiny as a perceived mitigation to fuel and equipment price fluctuations, labour shortages and the need to move everincreasing volumes of material. Individual vendors and delivery organisations are now offering a sometimes confusing array of systems, particularly for the dig and dump side operations.One system does not suit all operations. This paper seeks to document the factors that should be considered in assessing the suitability of different IPCC systems, with a focus on dig side equipment layouts in particular. These factors include the productivity of the systems, interactions with the drill/blast and bench operation sequence, the ease of relocation, flexibility to changes in the reserve, scalability and compatibility with other elements of the system.

Copper plays an essential role in our society. It is one of the key materials supporting economic growth and human development in emerging economies, for its common use in construction, power generation and transmission. It is also a critical metal for the transition to a low carbon future, particularly for its uses in renewable energy and electric vehicles. As a result, global demand for copper has been increasing steadily and is predicted to continue in the future. The demand-supply gap is currently growing, and new mines will be needed to fill it. This project observes the current pipeline of copper mining projects, which are characterised by technical complexity (lower grades, deeper deposits, complex mineralogy etc.) but also environmental, social and governance (ESG) complexities. A common assumption in the mining industry is that a rise in copper prices will unlock these deposits. However, while most technical complexities are price sensitive and are likely to be overcome in favourable economic conditions, the influence of ESG complexities is more difficult to evaluate. Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

During the 1950's there was a flurry of activity on the design of main ventilation shafts for mines. More recently, a new ana- lysis was commissioned in relation to the multi-shaft, nuclear waste isolation facili- ties currently under design in the United States. This paper presents the major find- ings of that study and should prove of value as a reference in the design of proposed new shafts. An overview of mine shaft resistance introduces the effects of the shaft walls, fittings, conveyances and shaft stations. Each of these is analyzed in turn. A com- pletely new technique is described, which facilitates the estimation of wall resis- tance. The effect of size of a conveyance is quantified and shown to be dominant when the cage occupies more than 30 per cent of the shaft cross-section. The dynamic effects of a moving conveyance are also analyzed.

On January 21, 1986, a methane ignition and subsequent mine fire occurred in the under- ground workings of the Jim Walter Resources, Incorporated No. 3 Mine located near Adger, Alabama. The fire, which began on a longwall face and eventually spread into the adjacent gob area, could not be extinguished directly and raged out of control for several hours. Sealing operations were begun underground by Mine Rescue Teams and the fire area was successfully sealed with the mine able to resume production in about one month. The No. 3 Mine liberated over sixteen million cubic feet of methane in twenty-four hours. The operation was unique, in that, the successful underground sealing of a fire in an ultra-gassy mine had not been attempted or com- pleted for several years. Maps and charts are included to give explanation of the typical data used to manage the recovery effort.

Environmental legislation for the process and manufacturing industries is frequently formulated without considering the fundamental limits of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics within process technology. Recycling of end-of-life goods is used in this paper to show how the limits can be evaluated on the basis of the theory of minerals processing and metallurgical engineering. This theory has been applied on European Union level to re-examine the legislation for automobile recycling in a recent stakeholder discussion involving the automotive industry (http://www.assurre.org). This theory and our models are finding their way into the computer aided design (CAD) tools of the automotive industry, developments that form part of a project to design the super light car of the future (http://www.superlightcar.com). Only such fundamental approaches will in future be able to provide the basis to argue and define realistic and sensible environmental legislation.

At the outset, I guess we should define what we mean by "com- modities". In the 20 minutes or so which I have for this paper, it is impossible to tackle all commodities -one would need to con- sider not only the base metals but also the ferrous iron and steel products as well as energy commodities such as coal, oil and even uranium. For the purpose of this address however, I would prefer to refer to the principal non-ferrous commodities: copper, lead, zinc, aluminium and nickel and, I would like to consider some of the changes which have taken place in the industry over the past 20 years-and the likely reasons for these changes. I would also like to dwell a little on the future and some of the key issues which-may influence the future path and direction of the metals industry.

The Latrobe Valley is located approximately 150 kms east of Melbourne. Within a very small area there are 3 large brown coalmines and associated power stations, 3 large towns, and numerous smaller towns in the vicinity. The mines have been generating power for Melbourne and surrounds for the last 100 years, with two of the mines being owned and operated by the Victorian Government (State Electricity Commission of Victoria) prior to privatisation in the 1990s. All three mines were privatised with the expectation that the mine voids would be filled with water to become pit lakes, as the final landform/rehabilitation solution (Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry, Teague and Catford, 2016). It could be argued that until relatively recently, this was largely expected, by government and industry, to be the rehabilitation solution for managing the two key risks associated with the sites:  The geotechnical stability of the mine pits.  The prevention of fire – through covering coal batters with water. Transitioning away from mining economies requires collaborative, regional, innovative thinking with a multitude of stakeholders, from a wide range of government departments, industry, First Nations people and broader community. Closure planning and rehabilitation activities require a range of skills and experience, such as, closure planning, various scientific and engineering disciplines (pit water quality modelling, geochemical modelling, cover design, landform design, contaminated site etc), civil engineering, demolition etc. Some of these skills are similar, such as financial modelling, stakeholder engagement, contract and project management. But the majority are different to those required during the operational phase of a mine. These closure skills can also be lacking within government, with Departments more familiar with monitoring and compliance activities associated with operational facilities. Some key aspects that appear to be critical to planned successful closure are:  Collaborative regional and localised planning, with industry, government, community, First Nations and other industry, business leaders and entrepreneurs all involved in providing a smooth transition away from mining.  Well-defined and known regulatory pathways to achieve mine licence relinquishment assists in encouraging investment.  Appropriately skilled and experienced government and industry personnel.  Mining companies, who are committed to closure planning and provisioning from the earliest point in project planning.  Mine employees who are appropriately skilled and experienced in mine closure planning and implementation with access to all the relevant technical expertise required for the project. Areas like the Ruhr Valley in Germany provide good some examples of smooth processes that facilitate mine economies transition into new economies (World Resources Institute (WRI), 2021).

The electrical conductivity of electrolytes is very important in metal electrowinning and electrorefining processes as it has a very large influence on the energy consumption. There are few measurements of the electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes available. The electrical conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes were measured over the following range of concentrations, 100 to 200 g/L H2SO4, 0 to 80 g/L Zn and 0 to 20 g/L Mg, at temperatures from 25 to 60 C. The specific conductivity of zinc electrowinning electrolytes may be expressed as a function of concentrations of sulphuric acid, zinc and magnesium and temperature by the following equation: k(S/cm) = 0.004 + 0.00115 t + 0.00282 [H2SO4] t - 0.00114 [M] t + 0.3442 [H2SO4] - 0.0451 [1-12SO4]2 - 0.1058 [M]ò[H2SO4] - 0.0224 (M] + 0.0286 [M] 2 where t is temperature (C), [H2S04](moI/L) is sulphuric acid concentration and [M](mol/L) is a sum of zinc and magnesium concentrations, ([Zn]+[Mg]). The specific conductivity of zinc electrolytes is a function of the concentrations of the hydrogen ion and free water molecule, which are calculated by taking into account the second ionisation constant of sulphuric acid and the stability- constants of zinc-sulphate and magnesium-sulphate complexes at 25 C.
