Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. Geological information plays a significant, cost effective role, in the Mt Whaleback iron ore mining operations. The geology and structure are complex. Good communication between the Mine Planning Production Scheduling and Quality Control Sections is the key to utilisation of geological information to its full potential.Drilling and pit face mapping are the two basic sources of detailed data sets which are processed to prepare up to date geological cross sections and benchwise geological plans. This information is used directly for the blast pattern design and production scheduling. Physical ore type estimation is also undertaken. Orebody models are generated from the geological information.

Having passed through a number of previous phases the best longwall results in Australia have shown a significant increase in the last two years. The results expected from a longwall face can be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the utilisation, and the available operating hours. Back analysis of the results achieved suggests that, on average, recent improvements arise from the higher capacity equipment recently installed; the utilisation has in fact reduced slightly. Review of the constraints which limit the longwall results, i.e. shearer speed, AFC capacity, support, advance rate, and man travel speed, shows that little improvement can be expected in the ideal production rate in thinner seams. In thicker seams the AFC often proves the overriding constraint and further increase in equipment size could lead to increased future ideal production rates and is expected. In all cases a concerted effort to increase the utilisation achieved is likely. For deep mines with thin to medium seams this offers the most viable path to improvement; by contrast thick seams with highwall/shallow access may benefit from further increase in equipment size.

For over 50 years R W Miller & Co Pty Ltd operated old coal properties abandoned by former owners as uneconomic, some of which dated back to the last century. The companyÆs ability to survive with what were relatively poor quality coal resources required a small efficient management organisation. In 1970 R W Miller was involved in negotiations with other coal companies through coal sales contracts to develop private coal areas under the provisions of the old Coal Mining Act (1906) and these efforts led to the development of Lemington colliery. At the same time development of the Ironbark colliery holding near Newcastle commenced. In 1971, R W Miller approached the New South Wales Government for a resource replacement area to prospect for coal in the Upper Hunter Valley. Authorisation No 33 was finally granted on 30 September 1975, but the company found the area was inaccessible as most of the surface was owned by the Australian Army. Later R W Miller was granted Authorisation 66 of 2167.5 hectares at Mount Thorley near Singleton on 1 November 1976. The development of this coal mining project coincided with the second OPEC oil crisis in 1978 and a short-term boom for coal resources and the unrealistic expectations generated by the boom. This paper gives a broad outline of the development of the Mount Thorley project between 1976 to 1986 including the feasibility study and the many governmental and industrial delays that resulted in a three-year time overrun in the project development period.

A model based on non-steady state has been developed for dissolution and diffusion in porous ore particles. Results from the particular model have been incorporated, as a rate term, into a global, heap-scale model based on a plug flow reactor at unsteady state. The global model can be used to consider leaching by aqueous-phase reagents in equilibrium with a gas- phase component, such as oxygen gas, as well as strictly aqueous-phase reagents, such as cyanide. The flexibility of the model even allows predic- tion of the outcomes of using reagent sideflow injection in large heaps. Data from column leaching tests are compared to the model, and their relationship is discussed.

An experimental mining project has been carried out in the Collie Basin to demonstrate the safe operation of total extraction mining techniques in the underground mines of the basin. To achieve this, it was necessary to design and install a means of controlling or removing groundwater so that goafing of the overlying strata could be safely achieved as part of the mining operation. The site chosen for the experiment was a triangular panel adjacent to Western No 6 (WD6) underground mine, which includes the 3 to 4 m thick Wyvern Seam beneath 130 to 180 m of overburden. The test area abuts a major fault on the downdip side. The overburden and underburden sequences include several horizons of permeable sandstones which form major aquifers. Water problems have long been recognized in all underground mines in the Collie Basin, and have previously prevented the successful application of total extraction mining. Following extensive hydrological investigations, dewatering and depressurization systems were designed to dewater the immediate roof aquifers and to depressurize aquifers higher in the sequence and in the floor. This would enable stable roof conditions to develop and controlled goafing to be achieved. The roof dewatering/depressurization procedure involved a combination of in-mine vertical roof drainage holes and conventional dewatering bores constructed from the ground surface above the mining trial area. The dewatering system was installed and operated for 29 months before the commencement of mining. Mining was eventually successfully completed in two trial panels using a retreat Wongawilli extraction system using bridge conveyors and continuous miners. Water inflow into the mine workings was channelled to a constructed sump area at the lowermost corner of the panel and pumped to the surface via vertical sump bores. The dewatering and depressurization measures adopted were successful in permitting the first controlled and systematic total extraction recovery of coal from the Collie Basin. This trial mining exercise demonstrated the potential for increasing substantially the recovery of coal from the Collie Basin, where previously recovery rates of around 30 percent from underground mining were commonplace, using only bord and pillar methods.

The Charters Towers goldfield in northeastern Queensland produced over 206 tonnes of gold from gold-quartz veins hosted by Mid-Palaeozoic granodiorite, tonalite, diorite and to a lesser extent amphibolite-grade meta-sedimentary schist and meta-igneous rock. Mineralisation occurs in grouped, moderately dipping shear zones with altered wallrock rafts and a complex network of quartz veins.Over 75 per cent of the production came from three main vein systems in the central goldfield: the Brilliant, Day Dawn and Towers Hill vein systems.The Brilliant vein system is hosted by undeformed tonalite and contains north-plunging oreshoots on a north-dipping main fissure and on shorter east-dripping hangingwall fissures. The Day Dawn vein system is localised along a north-dipping dyke at the contact of two deformed granitoids in a brittly reactivated mylonite, where horizontal oreshoot plunges may be related to the original megascopic undulations in that structure. The Towers Hill vein system is hosted in two granodiorite types and has multiple ore controls.Structural analysis indicates that the distribution of the oreshoots within the vein systems is variously controlled by the primary fabric and igneous contacts of the granitoid host rocks. Splaying, changes in dip, and fissure intersections are the main controls. The largest vein systems are both in reactivated shallow-dipping mylonite, or in fissures in younger undeformed granitoids. Each vein system lies in a separate structural domain, usually where older east-striking structures are preserved.

Currently all the mines output of over five million tonnes per annum is sold into the export market predominantly as a steaming product.

The Maggie Hays nickel sulphide deposit is located at latitude 32¦ 15 'S, longitude 120¦ 30' E on the Lake Johnston (SI 51-1) 1:250 000 map sheet. The deposit occurs in the Lake Johnston greenstone belt, in the Southern Cross Province of the Archaean Yilgarn Block, 500 kilometres east of Perth, Western Australia (Figure 1). The remoteness of the Lake Johnston greenstone belt and its poor access, restricted previous exploration activities and the full appreciation of the geology and its Ni-sulphide potential. It was not until 1991, when Forrestania Gold NL commenced exploration activities, that the geology of the ultramafic units and their potential to host significant concentrations of Ni sulphides were clearly established. This paper, which describes the geology and the characteristics of the Maggie Hays deposit, is based on the results of exploration by Forrestania Gold NL and a collaborative research agreement between CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining and Forrestania Gold as reported by Perring, Barnes and Hill (1994), Perring and Hill (1995), Perring (1995 a and b) and Barnes, Perring and Reilly (1995). A comprehensive description of the geology, petrology and geochemistry of the deposit is being prepared for publication by CSIRO (Pemng, Hill and Barnes, in press).

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". If my story has such a message, it could perhapsbe construed as reinforcing the oft-repeated dictums, true or false, that "history repeats itself" or "man never learns".Coal mining is by far our oldest major Australian industry except for agriculture. A significant basemetal province is recognised in the southern part of the Bonaparte Basin, Western Australia. Epigenetic stratabound carbonate hosted Pb-Ag-Zn mineral- isation occurs in dolomites of Tournasian age within a marginal marine transgressive carbonate and fine grained clastic sequence, spatially overlying the lagoonal facies of a Late Devonian reef complex. The deposits comprise coarse grained sulphide mineralisation characterised by high Pb:Zn ratios (10:1) and high silver (50 g/t) content. They occur at shallow depth, are flat to moderately dipping, and form a discontinuous mineralised trend at the margin of the Sorby Platform, which flanks a Precambrian basement high. Host rocks are predominantly sedimentary breccias and dolomitised footwall carbonates associated with a significant local unconformity transgressed by a siltstone cap rock sequence. The deposits are structurally related to synsedimentary growth faults, local basement highs and tensional en-echelon breccia systems. Fluid inclusion studies have concluded that mineralisation was deposited from a low temperature (85¦C-115¦C) saline ore forming solution. Lead isotope work reveals a Precambrian genetic source of the lead. Locally remnant textures after sulphates are recognised within the host sequence together with common bitumen and oil shows. Reduction of sulphate to H2S was possibly facilitated by either bacteria. activity, or by residual hydrocarbons which acted as a reducing agent. An alternative source of H2S may have been afforded by the thermal degradation of hydrocarbons. A 'mixing' genetic model is proposed for the mineralisation, which conceives the expulsion of metal enriched basinal brines followed by their precipitation as sulphides after mixing with locally derived reduced sulphur solutions at relatively shallow depths in their structural/stratigraphic sites of ore deposition.

In the last 40 years nuclear energy has taken its place as a major source of electricity worldwide. It now produces 17 per cent of the world's electricity and could conceivably produce a higher proportion, to displace some six billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Concerns about global warming and environmental quality now underline the virtues of nuclear electricity among alternative sources of energy. Global electricity demand is rapidly increasing as a proportion of total energy usage. The proportion has doubled since 1960 and the demand is expected to increase at least 75 per cent between now and 2020. The source of this extra capacity, and the replacement of present capacity, raise questions with major resource and environmental implications. Today nuclear energy is a mature technology. Over 1200 nuclear reactors have been built and operated, some of these have been decommissioned, and among the 440 reactors in commercial operation the first advanced reactors are now entering service. Some 8000 reactor-years of operation have, with the sole exception of Chernobyl, shown nuclear energy to be extremely safe and reliable. High-level wastes are being managed properly and in different parts of the world two strategies are applied to this. Australia has a major role as a long-term supplier of uranium, since it holds almost 30 per cent of the world's reserves. This, along with an impending sellers' market for uranium, is making it an opportune time to develop new mines here. However, after several decades of concern about civil nuclear energy contributing to the arms race, we now have uranium liberated from nuclear weapons stockpiles being diluted for use in civil reactors, which will supplement ex-mine supply. The public acceptability of nuclear energy remains the critical factor in its future and hence in ours.

The standard charge weight scaling laws imply that only one particular delay (that possessing the maximum instantaneous charge) contributes to the ppv. However, the present analysis clearly demonstrates that a varying number of blastholes contributes to the ppv. This number also increases with distance, x, between the blast source and the detector, and is caused by waveform broadening due to attenuation. Thus the operative charge weight, itself, is also a function of the distance, and so makes the standard charge weight laws difficult to implement. If the delay time scatter is neglected, then, under certain conditions, relatively simple expressions can be derived for the ppv magnification, FN, as a function of the number, N, of blastholes. When the influence of delay scatter and random fluctuations in each blasthole vibration is included using Monte Carlo simulations, then, to a first approximation, the condition FN=KNx applies, where KN is a constant dependent upon N. Unfortunately, however, for any particular blast this condition cannot be distinguished from the standard charge weight scaling law. The dependence of ppv on N would only be apparent if blasts of differing N were to be compared in an otherwise identical environment. Since this situation is very difficult (if not impossible) to realise, then the influence due to N, although significant, goes largely undetected. Another problem associated with standard charge weight scaling laws is the difficulty of accurately assessing the appropriate charge weight, even if attenuation broadening is neglected. For example, if a number of blastholes are very close, then they experience a vibration interaction which is non-linear. However, if the same blastholes were to be widely spaced, then the separate vibration signatures add linearly. The standard charge weight scaling law fails to distinguish between such linear and non-linear regimes. Unfortunately, in many production blasts, both regimes exist throughout various portions of the blast spatial pattern and so makes it difficult to determine the operative charge weight. The solution to the combined influence of waveform broadening and linear/non-linear interactions will obviously require substantial future research. A possible solution may be found in the use of numerical dynamic codes.

Hilton Mine is being developed as an integrated component of the Mount Isa operation, to achieve continuity of silver/lead/zinc production well into the next century. The mine has a chequered history from its discovery in 1947 through several periods of intense development activity, each of which has been curtailed due to the further development of the Isa Mine operation. This era has now passed; to sustain increased production rates at Mount Isa, there is a requirement for Hilton ore in 1989. The decision was made in 1983 to accelerate the programme of Hilton development by installing skip hoisting facilities in the main service shaft (P49), to facilitate the development of the mine to pre-production status. The Hilton development plan provides for the mining of selected orebodies, a broadening of the underground exploration drilling programme, and the establishment of significant mine infrastructure. Several technical challenges have been identified as important. The Hilton orebodies, although occurring in the same rock type as Isa Mine, are more faulted, jointed and intersected by intrusive dykes. The ore is more variable in terms of ore continuity, boundaries, grade and metal distribution and the mineralogy more complex. As a consequence the development of this project consists of a co-ordinated programme of mine exploration and development, rock mechanics investigations and metallurgical research and development work. Production will commence in 1986 at a rate of 1000 t/day using mechanized cut and fill techniques. It is planned to introduce sublevel open stoping and by 1996/97 the production rate will be 2.5 million t/yr.

Geostatistics - a tool used by geologists and mine planning engineers to estimate grades and rapidly evaluate alternative mining strategies has reached an advanced stage of development for the silver-lead-zinc orebodies at Isa and Hilton Mines. Geostatistics has been used for over a decade in the massive copper orebodies but the stratiform lead-zinc orebodies are much more complex and provided a completely different set of challenges. Recent increases in computer processing speed and power provided by the Integrated Mine Planning System (IMPS) has aided the development of the geostatistics package. Also the formation of a project team and the subsequent in-house development which has drawn together the expertise of geologists, engineers and system analysts has contributed significantly to the success of the project.The most important feature of any approach to modelling the lead-zinc orebodies is that the kriging search must consider estimate and sample points according to their positions relative to bedding surfaces. By transforming co-ordinates as perpendicular offsets from a plane representing the local strike and dip, it is possible to elongate the ellipsoidal influence to parallel bedding. By interactively modelling surfaces using CAD facilities and then specifying these surfaces as 'hard' or 'soft' boundaries, the geologist has complete control over the kriging process.

Mine geology is understood through synthesising large amounts of structural, lithological, geochemical and geophysical data derived from the original topographic surface, drilling and surfaces exposed and removed during open cut and underground excavations. Computer- generated 3D geological models of any mine environment need to incorporate large amounts of information but also should be regularly updated with typically frequent influxes of new data. Geologists with the local knowledge should also be involved in the model construction, enhancement and interpretation, placing ease-of-use functionality high on modelling software requirements. Implicit-style modelling is a fast-growing area of 3D geological software development where interpolated surfaces such as lithology boundaries and bedding orientations are defined mathematically as functions rather than explicitly through coordinate meshes. The functions are constrained only by the data and not by an artificially imposed grid; therefore, implicit 3D modelling can process a lot of information quickly and routinely operate on original data (such as observed contacts and structural data) rather than on evolved iterations and interpretations. 3D mine geology models can be readily updated with new data, which can be automatically reprocessed to test ideas in near-real time. Implicit, function-based 3D modelling software has been applied to the Globe-Progress mine in West Coast, New Zealand. This structurally- hosted gold mine has some geometrical conundrums that are in part being resolved as excavation of the open pit proceeds. The relationship of the Globe-Progress ore shoots to hanging wall and footwall structure is still not fully understood, however, and 3D geological modelling is assisting with visualisation and testing of structural hypotheses. The modelling is also capable of predicting areas of bedding defect slope failure in yet-to-be excavated parts of the mine.

Knowledge of the hydrogeological setting of a mine forms an integral part of a mining operation. Groundwater impacts, initially, on mine feasibility. Then, on commencement of mining, it interacts on the operational components of dewatering, water supply, tailings leachates, mine wall stability, stormwater run-off, water disposal, impact on regional environment and mine closure planning. The recording of hydrogeological information is frequently overlooked during resource and reserve definition as well as during the course of mining when prime opportunity exists for the collection and collation of this data. In recent times, the exclusion of hydrogeological data has been exacerbated by use of high air pressure drill rigs that exclude water inflow. The recording of water data has been further inhibited by the use of computer coded drill logs that do not include the site geologistÆs or drillerÆs comments on drilling problems and observations associated with groundwater intersections. Geologists now infrequently directly supervise drill rigs, but visit the rig only intermittently to evaluate drilling progress. They do not see first hand drill performance characteristics at water make zones. Drill cuttings, as drill chips and cores, are now mostly logged away from the drill site so that wet sample locations, visual water flow evidence and verbal comments from the driller are not recorded. As a result, mine geologists now do not direct adequate attention to the delineation of lithologies and structures that store and transmit water. This paper provides examples of water sighting and recording techniques applicable to a mining operation. Examples are also provided where hydrogeological conditions have been disregarded with serious impact on the progress of mining. The recording of hydrogeological data should be maintained and formatted by the site geologists into a useful database for review as and when required by specialists in hydrogeology, geotechnical and mining engineering and the environment. The information can be coded by the site geologist for inclusion into the mine database. A groundwater dataset, compiled during the progress of field investigations, will save the considerable cost of re-drilling and hole re-entry testing which would otherwise be required to provide base level hydrogeological information required for progress of mining. Apart from working mine use, a hydrogeological dataset is a necessary component for planning mining closure and mine legacy conditions.

The Ravenswood Mine in North Queensland is the first gold mine developed by Carpentaria Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MIM Holdings Ltd. Carpentaria Exploration Pty Ltd began exploration at Ravenswood in 1978. However initial exploration of the main gold producing area (Buck Reef East) commenced in March 1987 when exploration rights to four key leases were secured. A rapid, co-ordinated exploration and development program produced gold from a heap leach operation nine months after the first costeans were dug at Buck Reef East. To treat higher grade ore found at depth in the Buck Reef East pit and the metallurgically more difficult Buck Reef West ore, a carbon in pulp plant was commissioned in May 1988. The mine is currently producing at a rate of approximately 40 000 ounces of gold per year. Ore at Ravenswood is hosted by hydrothermally altered diorites and tonalites of the Ravenswood Granodiorite complex. Alteration is controlled by planes of permeability formed by joints, shear zones and dilational breccias. The complex orebody geometry resulting from these controls required very detailed surface and drill exploration for adequate definition. Carpentaria's need for early cash flow meant that economic, mining and metallurgical considerations governed choices of exploration techniques, program timing, material and data collected. The initial reserve of 1.1 mt @ 2.87 g/t Au was defined by sectional polygonal methods. Grade control is based on geologic mapping and blast hole or channel sample assays. Ore is batched through the crusher and sampled to monitor grade control and mining performance. Minimal dilution has occurred. Gold content is greater than predicted by the reserve. Sprinkling of heaps commenced in November 1987. Changes have been made to the pad design and to the method of heap construction. Heap leach ore is treated at a rate of 400 000 tpa.
