The profitability of individual ore blocks can be classed as clearly profitable, clearly not profitable, and those in between which are by nature quite sensitive to their major cost and revenue drivers. It is often the case that the most effort goes into the least profitable ore blocks to ensure that these will in fact not generate a loss. In these cases a cut-off grade policy is often not sufficiently live to separate individual sources given the volatility of financial markets and individual circumstances of some sources particularly in remnant operations such as Mount Isa MinesÆ Lead Mine. Standard sensitivity analysis can determine which factors stope profitability is most sensitive to. However, this does not usually indicate the likelihood of any input change, nor the combined effect of multiple inputs changing. The author attempted to modify the Lead Stream financial model that determines cash margin by inserting probability distribution functions and then using Monte Carlo simulations to determine the probability of any particular ore block making a profit. This effectively demonstrates the combined effect of varying a number of inputs simultaneously to provide a probability of making a profit. The limitations of this analysis lie in the accuracy that individual probability distributions can be specified. Attempts to generate valid functions from first principles have proved difficult for a number of reasons and these are discussed along with some practical alternatives.

About 17% of the world's present day oil supplies comes from wells drilled in the continental shelf of some 28 countries. The demand for oil is increasing each year and is expected to quintuple in the next decade. In the same period, the demand for gas will climb to at least 20 times its present rate. In the next decade, the percentage of oil and gas obtained from offshore is expected to rise to nearly half the world's consumption. The offshore oil industry is currently striving to achieve new technological advances in the field of deep ocean operations, especially in face of adverse seas. While the emphasis was put on drilling vessels for exploration, the industry was slow in developing effective offshore construction vessels. Until a year ago, construction vessels were but large barges with construction equipment mounted on their decks. These vessels all shared the same severe limitation: When the sea exceeds a five-foot wave height (and in some cases as little as three feet) the conventional construction barge is forced to suspend operations. In face of an oncoming storm they must run for shelter. Their utilization, therefore, is limited and in rough weather areas, such as the North Sea or the Bass Strait is lower than 50%.

Two key elements in the design of a pastefill or high density hackfill system are the preparation of the backfill material and its distribution underground. This paper examines these two areas. Owing to the essentially impervious nature of total mill tailings, preparation of pastefill and high density fill from current tailings involves a physical dewatering process. There are currently three methods available for this process: I. Vacuum or pressure filters. These represent the 'traditional' approach to the preparation of pastefill. 2. Paste production storage mechanism. This is a thickening/storage mechanism developed with the specific objective of producing paste/high density backfills. 3. Fluidization. This system utilises silos fitted with simple dewatering devices and nozzles. Recently developed by CANMET, it provides the simplest and most economical approach. This paper describes and compares the three preparation methods, from a practical and an economic point of view. Once the pastefill/high density fill has been prepared and binder added, the backfill must be distributed underground into the stopes. A fundamental factor in the design of a distribution system is the rheology of the material- No two materials will exhibit the same properties, and a sequence of rheological and related testing is required prior to the completion of the design of the underground distribution system. This paper covers the testwork normally required and discusses the fundamental design parameters of pastefill distribution systems. The final section of this paper summarises the use of pastefill at three mincsin Canada.

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. A marked improvement in stope definition, reserve conversion and Mine to Mill reconciliations has been demonstrated on the back of an innovative approach to UG grade control.CITATION:Clark, F and Carswell, J T, 2014. The Kiirunavaara apatite-magnetite orebody is about 4 km long and approximately 100 m thick sheet-like body, which lies roughly in a north-south direction and dips from the horizontal plane along its entire length, in towards the town of Kiruna. The origin of this orebody has been a matter of controversy, with both magmatic and hydrothermal origins proposed. Traditionally and for practical purposes this rich apatite-magnetite ore has been divided into two main types: low phosphorous ore (B-ore) and high phosphorous ore (D-ore). Further the low phosphorous ore is divided into the low alkali (B1) and the high alkali (B2) ore.

Taquari Vasouras potash mine (Vale Fertilizantes) has many interesting features including virgin rock temperatures of 50¦C at depths of 700 m. The mine has a relatively small shaft system with limited ventilation carrying capacity, which was not adequate to exploit the full extent of the deposit. This limitation was overcome by installing two large-scale recirculation systems with underground reconditioning centres. This paper describes this unique mine ventilation and cooling system and some of its history over the past two decades. The two controlled recirculation systems have been operating safely for some ten years and the use of large-scale recirculation has been a fundamental component in the increase of production and extending the mining further-and-further from the shaft centre. The recirculation systems have played a huge role in the mine profitability and comprehensively extending the mine life. The paper also discusses a number of novel design and operating features such as reverse running pumps for energy recovery. The underground chilled water system design required a number of special safety features in order to minimise the risk of water leakage since this could be catastrophic in a potash mine. This paper describes a good example of a mine in which the final ventilation and cooling system design ends up very different to what was envisaged at the greenfields stage.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Funnell, R and de Oliveira, L, 2013. The Croydon Gold Mine is located in northwest Queensland and is a joint venture between Central Coast Exploration N.L. and Pancontinental Mining Ltd. The mining operation commenced in 1987 and consists of satellite open pit mines feeding a central Carbon-In-Pulp gold Treatment Plant. The gold mineralisation is hosted by quartz veins within the Croydon Volcanic Group and the Esmeralda Granite, a cogenetic igneous suite of Middle Proterozoic age. The mineralisation comprises gold and silver with associated basemetals. The gold and silver electrum occurs as extremely fine free grains. The gold distribution is heterogenous occuring across the full vein width, or restricted to the footwall or hangingwall. The average mineral resource grade is 3.5 g/t. The deposits are all hard rock and mining is carried out by drill and blast technique. All mining activity is carried out by a mining contractor. Mining is by a selective mining method which entails the drilling, blasting and extraction of the hangingwall waste prior to orebody extraction.

In the 1990s round flotation tanks were introduced as a result of the lower fabrication costs for larger cells. It was soon observed that round tanks held a number of further advantages over the traditional rectangular cells, such as better hydrodynamics, lower costs and reduced footprint per unit volume.In the last twenty years flotation cell sizes have increased almost exponentially and designs of 250 to 300m3 are a well established standard with plans for full scale pilot installations of 500m3. The option to install these large cells gives flexibility in circuit arrangements and allows efficient and economic matching of flotation lines with modern mill designs. The benefits of scale up are well known with reduced numbers of cells required, lower power costs per unit volume, etc. These benefits will be briefly reviewed with specific reference to the installation of 300m3 to 350m3 flotation cells at the Copperton Concentrator of Kennecott Copper in Utah, USA.The sophisticated techniques required to model these ‘supercells’ have led to a critical review of the fundamentals of flotation science and engineering. In addition to outlining the advantages of large flotation cells, this paper will review the science which supports, and occasionally challenges, the ongoing trend to larger flotation cells.

Frequency of reports on premature failure of rock bolts and cable bolts have increased in past two decades. Such a failure threatens both the safety of underground mine workers and the economic viability of the operations. Herein, we report on analysis of rock bolts and cable bolts failed recently in three underground mines in Australia. Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques were used to study the failed bolts. MPI showed a number of subcritical cracks on the surface of the bolts. The majority of the cracks in both cable bolts and rock bolts were initiated from the base of ribs (indentation) where the stress concentration was high. SEM examinations showed tearing topography surface (TTS) in all failed rock bolts and cable bolts. These indicated that the failure occurred through hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking (HISCC). The development and application of paste fill, cement slurry aggregate fill and shotcrete bulkheads at Mount Isa Mines is described. The progressive changes in filling style in the Mount Isa copper mines from a dry fill based cemented rock fill to tailings based paste fill and slurry fills is explained. The development of shotcrete arched bulkheads and engineered drainage system is described. Details on how Mount Isa Mines has achieved approximately 30 per cent cost reduction in backfill operations through innovations are given. The development of a rocky paste fill is explained.

Coal washery wastes comprise tailings, finer than 0.5 to 0.1 inn depending on the sophistication of the washery, and coarse reject, typically finer than 50 mm. Subaerial disposal of coal tailings slurry at about 30 per cent solids by mass results in the formation of a delta with an average slope of about 1 in 100, representing one extreme. The ravelling of coarse reject on loose-dumping, results in an angle of repose slope with an angle of about 37" (1 in 1.3), representing the other extreme. The pumped co-disposal of coal tailings and coarse reject results in the formation of an upper delta with an average slope of about to one in ten, between the two extremes. The depositional behaviour of these three waste streams is discussed and compared in this paper. The important depositional and material parameters, and a theoretical description of the processes involved, are also presented. Comparisons are made between the depositional behaviour of the various coal washery waste streams, and natural depositional systems, such as rivers, alluvial fans, and scree slopes.

Over the last ten years at Risdon, zinc production capacity has almost doubled. This has resulted in modifications, many of which have affected zinc deposition operating conditions in the cells. Some of these changes appeared to have affected average current efficiency to such an extent that a special investigation was initiated, using multiple regression analysis to assess historic cell unit operating para- meters. The study highlighted the importance of certain parameters in maintaining maximum current efficiency for zinc deposition from !Risdon purified solutions under conditions of !changing current density, acidity and zinc con- centrations. Maximum current efficiency was obtained only within a zinc to acid ratio in cell electrolyte of 0.45 - 0.55 and a residual zinc concentration greater than 48 g.1-1, irrespective of actual zinc concentration or The investigation also established: ieters giving minimum power consumption at termined current density; the effect of ntration changes in common impurities on nt efficiency; the existence of high s of some impurities in solids precipit- in the cells and pure solution tanks.

The case study is based on the largest ore deposit at Mt. Lyell; the Prince Lyell deposit, comprising a regular lensoid mass of dissemina- ted and vein pyrite-chalcopyrite mineralisation. Reserve estimation employs conventional techniques, based on diamond drill hole and relevant development sampling data. Probable ore reserves are estimated using the contouring (isoline) method an longitudinal projections for ore thickness and accumulation (m %Cu) at a '0.8% Cu' cutoff. Final stope and pillar res- erve estimates (proved ore) are derived from designed ring tonnages and contoured accumula- tion for individual mining units, following more intensive sampling. Systematic grade control procedures have been adopted and individual stopes and pillars reconciled against mill production. The proved ore estimates have been found to com- pare favourably with the reconciled production.

The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.

The properties of top slags play a very important role in secondary steelmaking. Fluxes should be chosen based on the ladle furnace (LF) slag requirements like viscosity, melting temperature, sulfide capacity, etc. CaF2 and CaO-Al2O3-based synthetic slags are the most used fluxes in secondary steelmaking to improve slag fluidity and interfacial chemical reactions. CaF2 is obsolete due to fluorine pollution and CaO-Al2O3 based slags have 40–50 wt per cent Al2O3 and 30–40 per cent CaO which is not beneficial for desulfurisation. Yet another drawback is that LF slag disintegrates into fine powder during cooling due to phase transformation C2S (2CaO.SiO2). Hence, there is a need for the development of low melting fluxes with high CaO content and the capability to prevent slag disintegration. The current work studied the effect of 0–9 wt per cent B2O3 on physico-chemical properties and characterisation of LF slags. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were carried out to identify mineralogical phases present in slag and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was done to understand the changes in bonds of B2O3 added LF slag. The characteristic temperature of slag was determined by a hemispherical method using high-temperature microscopy. Empirical models were used to calculate viscosity, break temperature, and sulfide capacity. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by GTT-Technologies) simulations were carried out to find the equilibrium phase fractions and percentage of liquid slag at different temperatures. New phases such as Ca11B2Si4O22 and Ca2B3O5 were formed in LF slag with B2O3 addition. Based on the results, 0.5–1.0 wt per cent B2O3 was found to be sufficient to prevent C2S-driven disintegration of LF slag. Also, the melting temperature and viscosity of LF slag were reduced by adding 3–8 wt per cent B2O3 due to the formation of BO3 planar triangular structure and low melting eutectics in slag. Liquid slag started forming at a temperature as low as 800°C when B2O3 is >6 wt per cent. It was found that the sulfide capacity, viscosity, and break temperature of the slag decreased with increasing wt per cent B2O3. Based on the analysis carried out, B2O3 can be a promising fluxing material in secondary steelmaking, for improving the desulfurisation kinetics and valourisation potential of LF slag.

Accurate geometric models of orebodies establish the framework for reliable mineral resource estimates that provide a basis for further exploration and mine planning, as well as for financial models that ultimately determine the economic viability of a deposit. Traditional, explicit geometric modelling techniques that are utilised for resource modelling by the general mining software packages, such as MineSight«, involve manually digitising interpreted ore outlines that must be carefully linked to create valid geometric solid models. An alternative, implicit modelling method, employed by LeapfrogTM software relies on a fast method of global interpolation, which offers several advantages over traditional modelling techniques. Although previous case studies have documented the relative efficiencies of the two approaches, the accuracy of the two methods has not been previously quantified and compared. This study quantifies the accuracy of solid models created using explicit and implicit methods, and compares the differences between the models. Solid models of the Doris Hinge vein gold deposit (located in the Hope Bay district, Nunavut, Canada) are constructed from preliminary and follow-up drilling data using both modelling techniques. The accuracies of the solid models generated using preliminary drilling data are determined by measuring the 3D distance between the surface of the models and the actual contact location defined by the follow-up drilling data. Additional comparisons based on volume, cross-sectional area and surface differences were made between both phase 1 solid models and solid models constructed from phase 2 drilling information. The overall results of this study find that the MineSight« and LeapfrogTM solid model accuracies are virtually the same, and that their volume, cross-sectional area, and surface differences are comparable. This study concludes that the implicit modelling technique generates accurate solid models that can be used in place of explicit models as ore shells for resource estimation in certain circumstances.

The Diavik Diamond Mine is a world-class operation located in an extreme environment 220 km south of the Arctic Circle in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics û such as limited winter access via an ice road, mine infrastructure being located on an island, with mining taking place behind dykes holding back a lake, temperatures at the mine that get down to -45¦C in winter, and the presence of bears, wolves, foxes and wolverines! One thing that Diavik does have in common with other mines around the world is the need for reconciliation. In late 2005 Diavik implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate the process of reconciling geological models, mine plans, production data and plant results. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation. It outlines the migration of Diavik away from a comprehensive and effective spreadsheet-based reconciliation process to a commercial grade, automated and web-based information management system. This paper documents the reasons for moving away from the spreadsheet system, the key parameters used for reconciliation, and the benefits gained by closing the loop between reconciliation and ongoing process improvement.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012.
