Legislation introduced for Queensland and New South Wales Coal mines provides different levels of prescription regarding specification of mine seals û generally in relation to capacity to withstand overpressure. In Queensland, the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation (2001), Section 341 (d) places a further onus on the statutory ventilation officer to æensure all ventilation control devices at the mine are properly constructed and maintainedÆ and that the ventilation officer æmust ensure a ventilation control device mentioned in the regulation à and installed at the mine meets the design criteria statedÆ for the ætype of deviceÆ. Based on the experience of the author, it appears that risk management and life cycle approach to seals has not been adopted to the same extent as for other aspects of operations. Further, because of the number of disciplines and personnel involved that may influence various factors affecting seal integrity, the opportunity for oversight or unclear allocation of responsibility is considerable. While suppliers can provide explosion or design rated seals, this should only be a starting point for application of the product in a coal mine. Application is often considered by mine planning staff (taking into consideration mine environment parameters such as water, control of gas, spontaneous combustion risk, etc) in conjunction with the colliery ventilation officer, and then construction completed by contractors under supervision of operational staff. After construction, seals often are managed by operational personnel with input from the ventilation officer. Input of the geotechnical engineer into pillar design, roadway opening size, ground support specification and most stable seal location is also required. The need for a customised design approach for each seal site is proposed in order to take into account the many and variable factors that may influence a site so that improved seal performance reliability and predictability can be developed. A program of quantitative as well as qualitative monitoring of performance and triggers for rectification or maintenance action is required, and would provide support to the aforementioned proposal. Many mines rely on visual/audible inspection and periodic bag sampling as the primary means of assessment. Other significant factors such as seal material properties, rib degradation, convergence, floor heave, effects of water on both structural integrity of the seal as well as the air tightness of the seal do not generally receive the same level of attention. Based on the above observations, the author has compiled a reference checklist in regard to the above matters, including aspects of and approaches to mine and pillar design, geotechnical modelling and data collection, civil engineering design, site evaluation and practical options available.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arintco Mining Corporation's ICAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au-Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in this country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon, a region previously unassociated with porphyry -style mineralisation.Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.4 per cent copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37 000 hectare FTAA has identified a further 16 potential porphyry-related deposits.

"The mining industry is the source for the vast majority of the metal, mineral and energy resources we use on a daily basis. New deposits are discovered over time and are developed into mines before being rehabilitated – a sequence that when repeated can help contribute to the noble notion of ‘sustainable development’, despite the generic concept of mining being the unsustainable consumption of non-renewable resources. The scale of the modern mining industry is immense – from iron ore and coal to base and precious metals, modern mines are sometimes hundreds or thousands of times bigger than their long lost historic ancestors. We also live in a world with emerging and increasing demands for so-called technology metals (aka ‘critical’, ‘e-tech’ or ‘specialty’ metals) that are needed to feed the rapid growth in renewable energy (especially solar photovoltaic panels and wind turbines), consumer electronics, sophisticated military technologies and super alloys, amongst other uses. These elements include the rare earth elements, indium, germanium, tellurium, rhenium, selenium, gallium and many others, most of which had few or no known uses in the recent past. Although the mining industry has been successful in developing ever larger mines and increasing the scale of production, the key issues underlying the future of the industry are declining ore grades, increased tailings and waste rock generation, the presence of toxic or other impurities, balancing the economics of primary and secondary products, stricter environmental conditions, more difficult exploration, increasing community expectations, as well as the processing of more complex or refractory ores, let alone the recent volatility in world commodity markets. Here, we synthesise our recent research on many of these various issues, focusing on the need to link all areas within the mining chain from mineral resources through mining to environmental performance in order to ensure we obtain the most out of our modern mining effort. The silver-lead ores of Yerranderie occur in a series of narrow, flat-dipping lodes in small bodies of quartz porphyry, intrusive into Upper Devonian volcanics, which are exposed in the western flank of the Permo-Triassic Basin of central New South Wales, about 80 miles south-west of Sydney (Harper, 1930; Lawrence, 1953). The lodes strike about E.-W. and are from 1,200ft. to 2,000ft. long. They consist of a series of ore shoots from 3ft. to 100ft. long, and up to 5ft. thick, though commonly under 2ft. thick, interspaced with low grade sections. They dip at from 18°S. to 400 S., and have persisted down the dip for 1,450ft. (693ft. vertical depth) in the Wollondilly mine, for 1,120ft. in the Bartlett's mine, and for 850ft. in the Wonga mine.The grade of ore in the Bartlett's mine was from 32% to 40% lead, from 100 oz. to 130 oz. silver per ton, 0.5 to 4.0% arsenic, with ore ,as rich as 20% arsenic on the No. 6 and No. 7 levels of the Silver Peak mine, the underlay extension of the Bartlett's lode, about 1% copper, and up to 4 dwt. gold per ton. In the Wollondilly mine the average grade was 15% lead, with sections as rich" as 36% lead, from 75 to 165 oz. silver per ton, 0.6 to 3.3% arsenic, 0.2 to 0.7% antimony, 0.8% copper, and up to 7...5. Cl~t. gold per ton. The zinc content of the ores is slight, and has not been recorded.Mining began about 1898, and to date more than 110,000 tons of ore, valued at £1,800,000, has been raised. Large scale mining ceased about 1935. The chief mines operating were the Bartlett's mine (formerly Colon Peak), the Silver Peaks, which is the underlay extension of the Bartlett's, the Wollondilly (or Yerranderie) mine, and the Wonga' (or Tonalli) mine.

In June 1992, the High Court of Australia recognised native title of the Meriam people over parts of the Mer Island in the Torres Strait as a form of common law. The Court also indicated that native title may have survived European settlement of the mainland Australia where it had not been extinguished by Governments and Aboriginal people have maintained their traditional connection with the land. The decision meant that two systems of land law were seen as existing side by side in Australia: ò one which derived from grants from the Crown under laws passed by Parliament; ò another which derived from the diverse laws and customs of the many Aboriginal groups in Australia.

A steady state heat and mass balance simulation of the Western Mining Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter (KNS) flowsheet was developed within the framework of the commercial software METSIM. The KNS simulation can achieve all plant setpoints through the adjustment of controlled process inputs, and provides a useful tool for the evaluation of the current flowsheet and potential flowsheet developments The simulation model and a number of applications are discussed in this paper.

A generalized void diffusion model for subsidence prediction has been developed based on theoretical concepts and physical principles. The general form of the model is a three-dimensional differential equation. With a few assumptions on the characteristics of overburden strata overlying typical room-and-pillar mining or longwall mining systems, specific solutions for the differential equation were obtained. A brief description of these solutions and their applications in the United States and China are presented in this paper.

With blasting, all far-field phenomena including, but not limited to, stress wave propagation, fracture, vibration and muck pile formation are intrinsically and irrevocably dependent upon near-field phenomena or mechanisms that we describe using physics-based mathematics typically transcribed into computer codes. The energetics involved in such near- to far-field transitions are not fundamentally relevant as they are simply progenitors of these processes.The notion of explosive energy as a descriptor for explosive or blasting performance is a case in point. These energies, which are generally used in blasting tables, are almost exclusively based on ideal detonation theory alone and do not include the influence of the rock, charge diameter, blasthole length and the late-time dynamic expansion that can be predicted using codes based on non-ideal detonation theory.With decoupled charges in presplits for example, the pressure drop between the charge and the blasthole wall can be simply described to first order using the energy relationship associated with adiabatic expansion. New high-strength Zn alloys for moulds are demanded from the automobile and electric industries in Japan, because the s rength of Zn moulds is still not high enough for the mass production. There are two approaches to improve the strength of Zn alloys. One is to increase the Al content. ZA alloys (ZA-8, ZA-12, ZA-27) were developed through this approach. The other is to increase the Cu content. But it is known that an increase in Cu generally depresses the castability of Zn alloys, so that the alloys with increased Cu have been rarely studied until now. In this study a reconciliation between the strengthening and the castability of Zn alloys by enriching both with Al and Cu has been attempted. Accordingly we have studied on the Zn alloys containing 4 to 25 mass per cent Al and to 24 mass per cent Cu have been studied. Their fluidity, which primarily corresponds to the castability of the alloy, were measured first and 19 alloys were selected based upon their fluidities and casting temperatures. Mainly the mechanical properties of all 19 alloys were tested and some were found to be excellent in both strength and castability. Z1009 (Zn-IOAI-9Cu-0.02Mg alloy) cast in a sand mould has the tensile strength of 360 MPa while ZAS (Zn-4AI-3Cu-0.04Mg alloy), which is the most popular alloy for moulds, is 215 MPa. Z2520 (Zn-25AI-20Cu-0.02Mg alloy) cast in a sand mould has a Vickers hardness of 178, compared to 107 for ZAS and 104 for ZA-27 (Zn-27AI-2Cu-0.02Mg). Furthermore the castability of Z1009 is as good as that of ZAS. The underside shrinkage occuring in casting ZA-27 is restrained in Z2520.

The Whitsunday Volcanics occupy most of the offshore islands from the Whitsunday Group, southeastwards through the Cumberland and Northumberland Groups, possibly extending to the mainland adjacent to Shoalwater Bay, a distance of 370 km. Some of the islands of this group are granitic, but preliminary Rb-Sr data indicate these to represent Permo-Triassic basement. Cretaceous volcanism is interpreted to have occurred during initial rifting prior to the continental breakup of northeastern Australia and subsequent development of the Tasman Basin.The volcanics comprise mainly lithic ignimbrites, with local development of inter-bedded surge and bedded tuff, accretionary lapilli tuffs, lithic concentration zones, and lag deposits. Isolated fluidual rhyolite and dacite domes occur. The deposits are considered subaerially emplaced. A Rb-Sr isochron age for volcanism of 110 Ma is determined from new data. The total thickness of the volcanics is unknown, but a minimum thickness of 4-5 km on Whitsunday Is. is suggested. Eruptive centres are inferred to be distributed throughout the volcanic zone. The volcanics are cut by numerous, dominantly near N-S, dykes ranging from dolerite through to rhyolite in composition.Chemically, the volcanics and dykes exhibit a continuous range of compositions from basaltic andesite, through andesite, dacite, to rhyolite, with minor more alkalic compositions. Phenocryst mineralogy in the silicic rocks is mainly plagioclase, augite, and Fe-Ti oxides, with less frequent quartz and hornblende occurrence. Sr and Nd isoptic compositions for volcanics and dykes are close to mantle values. These data are tentatively interpreted in terms of a lower crustal magma arc source separated from the mantle only a geologically short time prior to Cretaceous magmatism.

Observations of coal stockpiles subject to unusual levels of instability showed that the particular coals exhibited 'gap grading', a relative lack of intermediate size particles. This led to a suggestion that fine coal particles within the pile might have been induced to migrate under the influence of water flow and to concentrate in relatively impervious layers, resulting in local water saturation and reduction of shear strength. To investigate this suggestion, a large test column has been constructed and washed coals with various levels of fines content have been subjected to a downward flow of water. Subsequent examination of the bed of coal within the column confirmed the percolation of fines and their concentration into horizontal layers, and showed the development of zones of saturation above those layers. Shear box tests showed differences in cohesion and internal friction angle between coals with different percentages of fines, supporting the hypothesis that fines percolation may lead to decreased stability.

The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) is commencing a project to develop a National Minerals Information System (NMIS) for New Zealand . Initially, the NMIS project will focus on providing public access via a web site to existing minerals related databases maintained by GNS and some other organisations. Core components are geological maps, GERM (Geological Resource Map), REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry), PETLAB (rock catalogue), GEOCHRON (radiometric ages), mineral deposit models, mineral deposit profiles and 3D mineral deposit GIS databases. In addition to developing the web site, the project will include upgrades of some of the databases and the production of derivative products such as mineral resource and prospectivity assessments, and mineral inventories.

Mixers are commonly used for the transfer of oxygen in gas-liquid-solid reactions in minerals processing. The process rate is usually controlled by two steps: gas-liquid mass transfer and reaction kinetics. Some examples are described along with the factors used for analysis of the mass transfer design problem. Typical oxygen rates and appropriate types of aeration systems or mixers are reviewed. The commonly used Rushton turbine has limitations in a number of mineral processes. The development and characteristics of the LIGHTNIN A315 axial flow gas dispersion impeller are described. Some practical examples which highlight its advantages are briefly described.

Numerical simulation by a finite element computer code has bee* used to identify key stages in the initiation of confined bulk explosive by cast primers. The simulations have been verified by comparison with experimental field measurements of shock arrival time versus distance above the primer for a relatively sensitive emulsion doped with ammonium nitrate prills. Further simulations were performed examining the effect of primer size in a relatively insensitive blend of ANFO and emulsion. Immediately above the primers, changes in shock velocity in the explosive were caused by the interactions between shocks originating from different surfaces of the cylindrical primers. At a distance up the explosive column corresponding to about one to two borehole diameters, the arrival of shock reflections off the borehole walls caused a sudden acceleration up to the confined steady state detonation velocity. The simulations reproduced experimental observations that primer size has only a weak effect on changes of shock velocity with distance for confined explosives. However, it was predicted that primer size has a strong influence on the intensity and duration of the pressure pulses that bulk explosive send into the rock surrounding the primer region.

Polyurethane resin (PUR) is extensively used in almost all coal producing countries. On the local scene, PUR components suitable for underground application were selected and subsequently, trials were carried out at several coal mines. This paper describes the work at Pikes Gully Colliery (B.P.3Coal), where water flow rates of up to 4.5 m (1000 gallons) per minute, were reduced to 1-1.5 m /minute at the tirst stage of application. Subsequent trials were carried out at West Cliff Colliery (Kembla Coal and Coke). A variety of PUR chemical mixtures were tested in coal ribs and in the roof of intersections and roadways. The trial results are presented with all particular details. Using the PUR injection method, the roof, at the most difficult intersection, was stabilised and 'de-bonded' roof bolts were re-sealed. At Pikes Gully and West Cliff Collieries, 2 tonnes and 3 tonnes of PUR chemicals were injected, respectively. The technique, primarily based on German experience (Bergwerksverband), was used by Delta Control Systems Pty. Ltd. ACIRL was closely associated with the trials, which were monitored by installation of the measuring Stations.

During the development of the Neves-Corvo Underground Copper Mine, since 1981, inflow of water has been encountered in the mine workings, which consist of a ramp from surface 5 km long, a shaft 575 m deep and access crosscuts through the massive sulphide orebodies of Neves, Corvo and Graga, which are three of the four known deposits up today. Mine-hydrological studies have established the main characteristics of the hydrological system and its evolution in space and time. In a geological setting of low permeability rocks of Paleozoic age, tectonically affected by thrusts and faults, this has involved consideration of the relation with surface and ground water as a result of mine dewatering processes. The hydrological systems are described and summarized in this paper together with the techniques employed to study their origin and evolution, namely hydrochemistry, thermometry, piezometry and isotopic tracers.

Gold was mined from quartz bodies at Ballarat East from the 1850s until closure of the last mine in 1917. The average depth of mines was about 350 m.Ballarat Goldfields Limited (BGL) carried out diamond drilling from surface between 1985 and 1987 which proved the continuation of gold-quartz mineralisation beneath the old mines.During 1989 an underground development program was commenced to access the mineralisation for detailed exploration. The program included two simultaneous shaft developments. These were known as B2 shaft and Llanberris No.1 shaft.

The Mogalakwena Platinum Mine in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex is Anglo American PlatinumÆs only open cast operation exploiting the Platreef. The Platreef, which extends along the basal contact of the Bushveld Complex, is geologically and mineralogically a much more complex orebody than the Merensky and UG-2 reefs. Changes in the footwall and the genesis of the Platreef translate into a number of rock types being present. These rock types vary in hardness and recovery potential and present challenges to metallurgical staff trying to optimise the concentrator. A true understanding of the implications of treating these rock types is required if the maximum value from this orebody is to be obtained.In order to more accurately forecast production and incorporate ore variation in the mine plan and comminution and flotation circuits, a geometallurgical approach to managing the operation has been used and is being further developed.CITATION:Schouwstra, R, De Vaux, D, Muzondo, T and Prins, C, 2013.
