The tailing retreatment project rated at 10 000 t/day commenced operations in October 1982. The operation consists of dredging, feed preparation, cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery followed by Zadra atmospheric stripping and electrowinning. For the first two years the operation was adversely affected by excessive cyanide consumption and low gold extraction. Investigations demonstrated that the very fine, or slime, fraction of the tailing was the dominant consumer of cyanide and dissolved oxygen. The plant flowsheet was subsequently modified by inclusion of 80 - 100 mm dia. cyclones for slimes separation and a 31 m dia. thickener for water recovery. Treatment of deslimed feed in the CIP plant has reduced sodium cyanide consumption from an average 1.85 kg/t to 1.15 kg/t. The reduced oxygen consumption by the CIP plant feed has resulted in higher dissolved oxygen levels, frequently reaching supersaturation after 4 to 5 h contact time. This has allowed much improved gold extraction from the existing CIP plant capacity. Gold extraction from the mixed pyritic siliceous tailing has improved from an average U prior to desliming to a current 57%. Investigations are continuing on the recovery of gold from the discarded slimes.

This paper summarises the influence of slurry rheology on the grinding throughput of batch laboratory and continuous plant-scale mills operating in open and closed circuit configurations. The results of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals are demonstrated. An underlying rheological explanation of the above factors is offered which involves tying the specific rates of breakage that are occurring in the mill with the specific rheological character that the slurry is exhibiting at any given set of operating conditions. Some industrial scale operating guidelines are presented which have proven useful in increasing the net pro- duction capability of grinding circuits.

The coal resources of the Singleton- Muswellbrook area of New South Wales are of major importance to Australia, and are likely to play a significant role in meeting the expanding demands for energy in many countries of the world. Coal resources of 45 thousand million tonnes of which 15 thousand million tonnes lie at a depth of less than 200m have been estimated. The history of coal mining in the area commenced in the mid 1800's and has been one of fluctuations in production but of rapid expansion in more recent years. It is destined to become the largest coal producing area in New South Wales. Coal is being won from the area by strip mining, open pit mining and by underground means. The techniques involved are described. The area is well endowed with infra- structure such as modern towns, railways, road- ways and access to port facilities. Production of both coking coal and steaming coal is expected to rise significantly within the next 25 years. A large proportion of the State's anticipated increased production to between 117 and 177 million tonnes by the year 2000 is likely to come from this area.

The Fimiston Open Pit (commonly referred to as the æSuper PitÆ) is a part of the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM) operation in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM manages the Fimiston Open Pit, the Mt Charlotte underground mine, the Fimiston Mill and the Gidji Roaster for its Joint Venture Owners, Newmont and Barrick Australia. KCGM produces up to 850 000 ounces of gold per year. The KCGM operations are located on the historical Golden Mile on the outskirts of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, about 600 kilometres east of Perth Western Australia. This traditionally underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding in excess of 50 Moz of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 g/t. This represents approximately ten per cent of the gold produced in Australia and one per cent of the gold produced in the world. The Fimiston Open Pit is essentially an aggregation of what were known as the Judd, South, Paringa, Croesus/Eclipse, Central, Brownhill, Drysdale, Morrison, North and Horseshoe pits into one continuous large-scale operation. The old Fimiston Underground Operations (included the Main, Croesus, Chaffers, Lake View, and Perseverance shafts) were also located within the area of the Fimiston Open Pit. The underground operations closed in 1992 due to high mining costs.

Any future developer of underground mining on the Bendigo goldfield will need to understand the unique geology and gold occurrence of this field. The development and sloping system employed will be primarily designed around these unique features. Modern techniques and equipment used in narrow vein mining will be applicable in this situation.The purpose of this paper is to examine the important geological features of the field as well as the known historical occurrences of the type of gold deposition in the ore bodies. This information will point to a system of development and extraction which will accommodate these features.

Structural analyses of oriented bore core sections from the West Wallsend No.2 Colliery Holding together with investigations in adjac- ent collieries and on the surface delineated structural phenomena. The rocks examined are anisotropic due to strongly developed bedding planes and the presence of penetrative joint planes. Joints, in this context, are regarded as mechanical discontinuities, they are genetically identif- ied wherever possible and their spatial attit- udes are determined and geometrically related to the regional structure. Identifiable anisotropies in the roof- and floor-strata of the Borehole Seam render favour- able mining directions for longwall and bord and pillar layouts.

High intensity stirred milling using the IsaMill has been the enabling technology for many projects by transforming the economics of fine grinding and simplifying circuit design. IsaMill grinding technology was originally developed for large-scale grinding to P80 sizings of 7 ¦m. The IsaMill is a high throughput, high efficiency mill that produces sharp product size distributions in open circuit configuration. The ability to grind in an inert environment, using a wide variety of media types, can give further metallurgical and economic benefits. The high energy intensity results in a small footprint that enhances the ability to distribute grinding power throughout the circuit, applying grinding energy to the minerals that need it. Recent scale up developments in IsaMill technology have enabled the benefits to be extended to large-scale conventional grind sizes, until now the domain of ball and tower mills. This paper will examine the crossover of IsaMill technology from ultrafine applications into the more conventional grinding area (P80 20 - 150 ¦m). Scale-up developments in IsaMill technology that have enabled this are reviewed. The upcoming commissioning of a 3.0 MW M10,000 IsaMill, the most powerful to date, grinding to P80 55 ¦m at PPL in South Africa will be discussed, as will the recent commissioning of a 2.6 MW M10,000 IsaMill at Kumtor. Recent testwork at McArthur River, where an IsaMill is being considered as an addition to the primary grinding circuit to replace the current tower mill will be reviewed. The potential combination of HPGR and IsaMill to transform concentrator grinding economics will also be discussed. Large-scale IsaMill technology has the ability to transform circuit design and energy efficiency for both coarse and fine grinding.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The impact of construction activity, unbalanced temporary stockpiles and adjacent deep excavation for a mole removal will be discussed.CITATION:Zhang, H and Lawrence, A, 2014. Australia’s ageing population means that by 2050 there will be 2.7 people of working age to support each Australian aged 65 years and over compared with five working people per retiree today and compared with 7.5 in 1970 (Swan, 2010). This means that there is going to be a greater demand on social services – for medical and aged care – from a smaller private income base. How will this gap be met? Australia is fortunate in that it has vast resources of mineral wealth; from iron ore, nickel and gas in Western Australia to the giant copper and uranium deposits at Olympic Dam in South Australia.The prospect of a meaningful profit based tax on this vast mineral wealth has been lost through Australian government’s handling of the issue in 2010 and with an industry fiercely opposed to the prospect of a mining tax. Hence, new ways of thinking are required. This paper looks at the issues facing the implementation of a novel scheme whereby Australia leases the mineral resources it extracts and thus derives income over the decades the metals are in-use in pipes, wires and structures with a premium paid for unreturned material or that used in dissipative applications. Applicable minerals could include copper, aluminium, nickel and rare earths. If Australia simply digs up and sells the metals once, the buyer becomes custodian of that resource and they benefit from controlling the future ‘above-ground’ resource stock.A complementary driver for a leasing scheme is the increasing importance of chain-of-custody following initiatives of the Responsible Jewellery Council with gold and diamonds, now with the potential to extend across commodities. The Australian minerals sector could thus position itself as a premium supplier with high social and environmental credentials.Recognising the implementation challenges, this paper includes a review of how such a system could be enforced to ensure that the metal is tracked throughout its life. It concludes with a discussion of the rates and terms should such agreements hold and suggestions for institutional arrangements for enforcing compliance.

A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. The resulting economic benefits of an expanded mining sector would be significant. The same story applies elsewhere in the world.CITATION:Schodde, R C, 2015. The Telégrafo copper – gold deposit is located in the Centinela district of the Antofagasta region in northern Chile. Telégrafo is a porphyry copper deposit of Eocene – Oligocene age which has a total mineral resource in measured, indicated and inferred categories equal to 2.6 billion tonnes with an average grade of 0.38 per cent copper.Currently the project is in the prefeasibility study phase, including an infill drilling campaign to improve the knowledge of the deposit that should result in an improvement of the mineral resource classification. In this context was decided to review the classification criteria in order to optimise the drill hole density necessary to support the project.This paper presents an application of conditional simulation to evaluate the risk related to drill hole spacing, using a geostatistical approach that mimics the process of evaluation of resources from the perspective of geological modelling and grade estimation. The first step of the approach is the generation of conditional simulations using the available samples to generate several plausible scenarios of the deposit in terms of copper grades and geological units. These scenarios are considered as the unknown reality of the deposit and sampled by synthetic drill holes in order to replicate the geological model process and copper resource estimation. In this way it is possible to establish differences between the possible scenarios and the generated resource estimation models for several simulated drill hole spacing alternatives. These differences or errors can then be quantified in terms of estimated mean, metal content and tonnage over different production volumes.The resulting errors were useful in assisting the decision making process related to the design of drill hole spacing for each category of mineral resource in the Telégrafo project, and to redistribute the budget associated to the drill campaigns for the next stage of the project.

In this paper a quantitative deterministic risk modelling approach (Quadrim) is introduced. The mathematical framework and equations for quantifying uncertainty within and aggregating across value chain nodes from error propagation techniques is proposed and discussed. A case study and worked examples, based on a hypothetical mine are then presented. This illustrates how uncertainty from the mining and economic value chains can be handled in a typical net cash flow calculation, and how this can be translated to a risk model. It is then illustrated that current valuation techniques do not just result in an information gap for decision makers. Traditional approaches such as discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and truck and shovel productivity analysis, which do not take into account uncertainty in input values, can result in potential bias in estimates such as net present value (NPV) or equipment hours

The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

A laboratory study of size segregation is described using a model of a Paul Wurth hopper industrailly employed for blast furnace charg- ing purposes. Experimental charge materials used in the study were glass ballotin.i (1-4mm dia.) and sinter fines (0.25-4mm). The tracer material employed consisted of coloured glass beads. The results of the study show that the discharge stream from a Paul Wurth hopper is characterised by an initial negative segregation followed by a positive segregation and that this segregation pattern is a property of the hopper geometry and the filling conditions. A simple computer model based on experimental tracer concentration results is proposed. The measured segregation results and those predicted by the model show close agreement. Application of the results with special reference to the effect of size segregation on charge permeability in blast furnaces is also included.

In the continuous casting of ultralow carbon (ULC) steels, free carbon is used to control the melting behaviour of mould powders. If the carbon is not completely removed during melting, it is enriched at the top of the slag pool. Liquid steel may come into contact with this layer because of the turbulence of the molten metal, resulting in its recarburisation, which negatively affects the desired product quality. Thus, a reduction in carbon input is desirable. For this purpose, SiC and/or Si3N4 with and without antioxidants were selected as melt-control additives to replace carbon in the mould powders. Thermodynamic calculations were performed to quantify their effect on the melting behaviour based on the chemical composition of a flux already applied to ULC steels. To experimentally assess the liquefaction behaviour, laboratory mould powders were prepared and annealed in steel crucibles closed with a lid. Crucibles were inserted into a furnace that was already preheated to selected temperatures between 900–1200°C for 10 mins and quenched to room temperature. Subsequently, the samples were mineralogically investigated. The results confirmed those obtained from the thermodynamic calculations. Si3N4, and SiC in particular, are suitable raw materials for delaying the solid-solid reactions of raw material components during melting. Owing to their stability at high temperatures, the necessary SiO2 content to form a liquid phase is not available, resulting in lower amounts of the liquid phase. The addition of antioxidants to delay the oxidation of SiC further reduces this positive effect. Attempts to decrease the SiC content without negatively affecting the melting behaviour resulted in a reduction in the CO2 emission by at least 27 g CO2/kg of mould powder when compared to the carbon-containing standard mould powder. These investigations revealed differences in the melting behaviours of granules and loose powders, which are related to their respective production processes.

Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927 - 1928 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr F G Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgoorlie mine, and Mr Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preserved from the Kalgoorlie mine by Mr A E Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection of MrS F C Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and 'weissite', muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

This paper presents a design approach and analytical methods that were used for assessing the potential of static liquefaction and developing the mitigation measures for a tailings dams. The rigour of the design and analysis approach represented leading practise in the industry to address static liquefaction, which contributed to a robust design with high confidence and certainty. The salient features of our approach to static liquefaction included geotechnical investigation and tailings characterisation, static liquefaction screening assessment, static liquefaction triggering analysis, limit equilibrium analyses and numerical modelling of static liquefaction using the NorSand model, which was amongst the first tailings dam projects involving numerical modelling of static liquefaction using these methods.
