Sheeted vein gold deposits are characterised by multiple subparallel veins and often free milling gold. Variability in gold grade and recovery parameters are enhanced by poorly designed sampling and test work protocols. Poor quality samples generally equate to an enhanced nugget effect. A sample can be described as being representative when it results in acceptable levels of bias and precision. Total sampling variability can be quantified by the relative sampling variance, which measures the total empirical sampling variance influenced by the heterogeneity of the lot being sampled under the current sampling / test work protocol. Effort should be made to minimise the relative sampling variance through Theory of Sampling (TOS) and quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) application. This contribution reports on a case study that exemplifies how high-quality grade and recovery data can be gained from a well-designed and planned drilling, sampling and test work program, followed by bulk sampling. Results across historical resource drilling, geometallurgical drilling, laboratory assay / test work, geometallurgical modelling and a bulk sampling/pilot processing study are reconciled. The mining industry in its drive to optimise equipment use and minimise cost simply to remain profitable in an uncertain commodity market needs to develop a greater understanding of equipment capabilities and cost. The factors influencing mobile equipment fleet cost and performance commence at the time of mine planning and continue to exert an influence over the life of the mine. These factors must be understood at the early stages of any operationÆs planning process as they continue to impact both positively and negatively on fleet performance and operating cost throughout the life of the mine. The key factors examined in this paper include: grades; rolling resistance; fragmentation and truck loading.

Over the entire life cycle of a mine, from early resource evaluation to the blasting of benches, the collection of geochemical data is crucial for the site operator, who must routinely and intensively drill and sample the orebody. This produces huge numbers of physical samples, in turn requiring significant cost and time for their preparation and assay. Moreover, despite best efforts, the sample recovery process is prone to error, which limits the quality of data.The pulsed neutron gamma technique has been used for decades in various industries, in particular oil logging, for its ability to provide direct identification and quantification of elemental concentrations. However, its implementation in logging tools for the mining sector is relatively recent. Built around the latest in technology for optimal spectrometric measurement, a commercial tool referred to as FastGrade™ 100 has been available for a few years and used with increasing success in the mining environment, specifically the iron ore industry, resulting in a reduction in the amount of collected samples. Relying on the physics of neutrons and gamma photons, both of which are particles that penetrate the surrounding bedrock through several tens of centimetres, such spectroscopy tools measure in real-time the composition of a much larger volume than the delimited volume of the drilled material traditionally used for geochemical mapping. Better statistics and reliability of the estimated composition increase the ability to properly and quickly measure drilled holes and allow the substituting of all or part of the sampling and assaying efforts by geochemical log data. Our paper focuses on this technology, known as pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA). It reviews the main drivers for the design of such a logging tool and discusses how the fundamental characteristics of the technology, in terms of neutrons and gamma interactions, translate into interpretation of the analytical output.CITATION:Jeanneau, P, Flahaut, V and Maddever, R A M, 2017. Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) subsidiary Lane Xang Minerals Ltd operates a single site copper and gold mine near Sepon in Lao PDR. Gold production commenced in 2002 and first cathode copper production was in March 2006. Plant throughputs for gold and copper are currently 2.5 Mt/yr and 1.4 Mt/yr respectively; use of a second tailings dam has commenced accordingly. Although the increased catchment area creates opportunities for more storage to reduce demand on other water sources, especially during the dry season, it also creates greater requirements for water treatment capacity.The water balance for mining operations in a tropical monsoon environment with dry winters presents on going management challenges. A successful mining operation depends on a careful balance of water inputs and outputs. The challenge prior to every wet season is having enough storage capacity to absorb potential rainfall. Plant operation in the dry season benefits from water captured and stored from the wet season which reduces the dependence on river water. Release of excess water to the environment is necessary to cope with the overall positive water balance and depends on suitable and effective treatment of water in accordance with the environmental guidelines.Ausenco has recently built and commissioned a second water treatment plant at the Sepon Copper Plant to process tailings decant water.  The objective of the second Sepon water treatment facility is to increase the site water discharge capacity to maintain the water balance and reduce the dependence on river water.  Decant water treatment is required to precipitate the contained heavy metals prior to discharging to surrounding wetlands.  The main metal that needs to be removed from the site water to meet discharge water quality requirements is manganese, as heavy metals are already precipitated to required levels in neutralisation before the tailings are sent to the storage facilities. A site layout provision for removal of manganese to produce a saleable carbonate precipitate is incorporated in the polishing plant design (future installation).

The process of hydraulic transport through pipelines, worldwide well known for the transport of fine-grain solids is also being used to a greater extent in mining for the handling of primarily coarse-grain solid û water mixtures for the removal of, for instance û coal and waste mixtures after coal winning using hydraulic monitors, tailings for backfilling underground and washer tailings and flotation waste to the dump. A large-scale test unit was taken into service at the Bergbauforschung GmbH (Mining Research Company) in Essen-Kray, GFR, to further improve this technology. The unit was planned and built by Krupp Industrie- und Stahlbau of Duisburg in cooperation with Bergbauforschung GmbH. The paper deals in detail with the demands made on this test unit and the technical results obtained on it and with the planned experimental research work.

Sulfide chimney samples collected during the 1998 - 1999 R/V Atlantis û DSV Alvin 3 - 30 research cruise have been examined and classified into four types, based on common characteristics. Chimney morphology is the most important characteristic and resulted in the following groups: 1. flutes, 2. cones, 3. wide-flats, and 4. beehives. Other characteristics resulted in the classification of subgroups within the flute, cone and wide-flat groups. The combination of characteristics, including; the presence of an orifice, internal chimney fabrics, wall thickness, extent of weathering, and the presence of Alvinella worm casts, enable evolutionary trends between the different chimneys types to be established. These trends indicate that with time, flutes evolve from immature zoned chimneys with a central orifice and smooth thin-walls, into cone chimneys with thick walls and massive fabrics which have their orifices infilled by massive sulfides, and a rough exterior. Repeated mineralisation within, cones may result in the formation of wide-flat chimneys. Beehive chimneys can form at any time during chimney growth.

In the current tough mining environment with lower commodity prices, operators need to improve operational profitability. Optimised equipment asset management is a sustainable way to achieve this objective. The increased efficiency of installed process equipment positively contributes to the circuit performance, affecting metallurgical performance, plant availability and operating costs. Nui Phao Mining Company Limited (NPMC) operates a polymetallic mine located in Vietnam. The circuit produces four main products, tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth and copper. Tungsten is the major revenue producer. The operation experienced the following equipment inefficiencies in its copper and bulk sulfide flotation (BSF) circuits:• lower than expected metallurgical performance - the BSF rougher flotation tails contained coarse (+106 µm) sulfur minerals which affected the downstream tungsten gravity circuit. The unrecovered sulfur competed with tungsten minerals affecting both tungsten recovery and product grade. • structural integrity and safety - the flotation circuit structures experienced excessive vibration beyond the acceptable tolerance levels. The vibration was attributed to the flotation mechanism design and impeller tip speeds. • equipment reliability and wear life issues - the flotation mechanisms were being replaced every six months, with reported failures at three months. This resulted in high operational costs. A mineralogical evaluation of the ore indicated that the coarse sulfur minerals were well liberated and relatively rich in pyrrhotite and pyrite. It was predicted that these particles should be recoverable by flotation under optimum conditions. NPMC worked collaboratively with Outotec to investigate options to improve the metallurgical performance of both sulfur and tungsten. A review of the copper and BSF rougher circuit infrastructure was also undertaken and focused on reducing the structural vibration and improving mechanism wear life. Prior to the circuit upgrade, laboratory and pilot testing was conducted to validate the circuit improvements. The final solution included the installation of Outotec FloatForce® mechanisms in the existing copper and BSF rougher circuits, and a new flash circuit (SkimAir®) treating the rougher tails stream ahead of the tungsten gravity circuit. The flash circuit is unique, as typically these types of cells are installed in grinding circuits. By March 2016, all circuit upgrades were complete, however the initial metallurgical performance was below expectations. NPMC and Outotec worked together to investigate and improve performance through further equipment modifications. Since October 2016, the metallurgical performance has improved significantly. Coarse sulfur mineral recovery has improved, resulting in an overall increase in recovery of sulfur and tungsten of 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. The Outotec FloatForce mechanism has also delivered operational benefits, with a reduction in structural vibration to within acceptable levels (<4.0 mm/s) and an improvement in mechanism wear life by 150%. This paper discusses the BSF circuit upgrades and compares operational data before and after the upgrade to quantify the improvements in metallurgical performance, structural vibration and mechanism wear life. One of the most important goals of the experiments is to determine deformation and strength of the rock specimen under applying triaxial load, the status of failure condition is one of the subjects which can be used in soil mechanic and foundation engineering applications. To investigate the effect of confining pressure on the triaxial test, the rock has been considered as bonded-particles method and has been simulated by particle flow code three dimensions (PFC3D). This model, does not have pre-existing microcracks and all the particles have the same size (2 mm diameter), equal to the real specimen shape. To compare the mechanical behavior and failure pattern of the numerical and experimental results at uniaxial and triaxial tests at the same conditions, the Young's modulus, Possion's ratio as well as maximum axial stress have been considered. On the other hand, the microcracks growth and change of failure pattern at the modelling of the uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining pressures up to failure point were reported. According to the experimental work, the number density of microcracks decreases from starting value and remains almost constant up to the failure beyond that point. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results of maximum axial stress and the Possion's ratio revealed good accordance. The initial number density of microcracks at the model was zero and increased while microcracking. Also, the sudden increment around the maximum stress was observed which is because of unstable growing of microcracks near the maximum stress. In all uniaxial and triaxial tests with different confining stresses, the number density of microcracks during the failure remains almost constant which can be considered as a proof of failure occurring in the model. The experimental results indicate the similar trend as well.

Sulphur-rich minerals such as authigenic pyrite (FeS2) are commonly associated with coal mine workings. Metallic elements such as arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are enriched in the pyrite relative to their concentrations in the surrounding environment. Exposure of pyrite and coal to air and water results in a series of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions that are commonly catalysed by species of Thiobacillus bacteria. These reactions lead to a lowering of the pH in the drainage waters (acid mine drainage, AMD) and subsequent mobilisation of trace metals in environmentally significant concentrations. This study assesses the spatial distribution of As, Zn and Cu concentration in water in relation to pH and Eh (redox potential) downstream from the tailings at the Wangaloa opencast lignite mine in southeast Otago. This mine was abandoned in the late 1980s due to a decrease in the economic viability of mining the lignite. The area is showing the characteristic symptoms of AMD, which is detrimental to the health of several Pinus radiate growing on some of the tailings. The pH of the drainage waters can get as low as 2, and in some instances, lower, but it returns to near neutral (pH 6.5) up to 200 metres down stream from the base of mine waste piles. It is well documented that the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is catalysed microbially, causing a substantial decrease in the pH of the drainage waters. Acidification is then counteracted predominantly by natural abiotic remediation processes occurring downstream.

At New Zealand Steel MiningÆs Waikato North Head operation a Bucket Wheel Excavator û shiftable conveyor mining system is used to excavate titanomagnetite bearing sand and clay. The system utilises two Bucket Wheel Excavators and two Beltwagons with a two shiftable bench conveyors and two common trunk conveyors to deliver material to a processing plant. The original system was commissioned in 1984 as a high capacity, low cost method of excavating. In 1996 a second Beltwagon was purchased, increasing the flexibility of the mining system.

Lightning Ridge, Australia, is the largest opal producing area in the world. Most opal is mined from shallow underground mines by individuals or small partnerships with the industry having been protected from large-scale development to date. The safety performance of opal mining has lagged both general mining industry standards and community expectations. The application of geotechnical analysis to the opal fields has the potential to considerably reduce injuries and fatalities. With consideration of the local culture, preliminary geotechnical analysis has been applied to some current methods of work utilised at Lightning Ridge. Practical solutions have been advocated and are presented in this paper. Improvements to safety generated by these practical solutions indicate that further geotechnical research at Lightning Ridge is warranted and would be beneficial.

The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

Self-cleaning fluidised bed heat exchangers have demonstrated unparalleled performance internationally for the implementation of indirect heat transfer in severely fouling fluid environments. Recent advances in equipment design have increased the scope of application to include indirect heat transfer in slurry environments, including fouling, scaling and viscous slurries. The ingenious configuration of recirculated cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube heat exchangers provides the ability to solve heat transfer problems that arise as a consequence of tube-side fouling during indirect heat transfer to process fluids or slurries. In most cases, the cleaning particles consist of chopped metal wire, however other process-specific materials may be used.

A Peer Review Panel for the Golden Cross Mine in the upperWaitekauri Valley, Coromandel was initiated in December 1989, before mining, as a requirement of the conditions of the Mining Licence and Water Rights. The panel's function is as a technical audit and advisory team - to provide independent technical review of design, construction, and execution of mining operations, slope remediation works, and reclamation/mine closure activities. The primary role of the panel is to act in the public interest by providing assurance to regulating authorities that the design and application of on-site mining operations accords with 'good industry practice'. Panellists are not involved in design nor as advisers, although until 1997 when explicit terms of reference were written, the panellists were a sounding board for some operational proposals. The panel functions to ensure that best mining industry technical standards are met. The costs of the peer review process are met by the mining company. Review of mining operations includes environmental matters such as land rehabilitation and water quality. The focus of this paper is on the process of peer review for environmental management factors rather than for structural and mine engineering.

Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. With the recent increase in environmental awareness, gold mining companies are fast becoming signatories of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI, 2007). The objective of the Code is to improve the management of cyanide used in gold mining and to assist in the protection of human health and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with the use of cyanide. In particular the code specifies the following cyanide concentration limits: 50 ppm WAD cyanide in a tailings storage facility, 0.5 ppm WAD cyanide for effluents, and 0.022 ppm free cyanide or 0.022 ppm WAD cyanide as surrogate in the post mixing zone of river discharge. Weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide refers to those cyanide species liberated at a moderate pH of 4.5, such as HCN(aq) and CN-, and the majority of Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag complexes with low dissociation constants. It is potentially toxic to humans and animals. Gold plants using cyanide should ideally measure WAD cyanide online and destroy WAD cyanide in excess of the applicable limits to ensure compliance with the Code. Mintek has recently developed an online WAD cyanide analyser (WAD Cynoprobe). The WAD cyanide analysis technique is based on the use of a ligand exchange reagent that liberates WAD cyanide bound to metals such as Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Ag. The ligand exchange reaction is represented by the following chemical equation: Metal(CN)X + yLigand ↔ Metal(Ligand)y + xCN- The plant filtrate is treated with a ligand exchange reagent, to liberate WAD cyanide, before measuring the free cyanide concentration via amperometry. The WAD Cynoprobe measures both free and WAD cyanide concentration. Its fast analysis time, approximately five minutes, makes it suitable for use in the control and optimisation of the cyanide destruction and recovery process. The instrument has proven accurate and reliable in the analysis of synthetic copper, nickel and zinc cyanide solutions made up in the laboratory as well as under industrial gold plant conditions during various trials. The WAD Cynoprobe has gained widespread commercial acceptance and is currently implemented on nine gold plants around the world.

æSustainabilityÆ is one of those words that has gained more usage in popular discourse than in the dictionary. In fact it is not in many dictionaries at all. Typically, given this, it also seems to mean different things depending on whose lips it emerges from. It is now like a code word in that if people say it, you donÆt have to think about its meaning; it is just æthereÆ and is taken for granted. This is a problem for the mining industry as we are now using the term too and to be effective in what we do, we need to have a reality check and see how those outside who have views on us (æstakeholdersÆ maybe) use it. The core issue seems to be æsustainability of whatÆ: the industry?, a company?, the global environment?, particular ecosystems?, the community? At these levels, the term seems almost meaningless. If we do not even agree on what it is, at least broadly, our communication and possible partnerships for going forward will be difficult to say the least. One reference to æsustainÆ in my thesaurus is: æTo keep from failing during stress or difficultyÆ. This may be a clue to something approaching a common notion. I suggest that to use æsustainabilityÆ we make the following assumptions:that we are talking about human activity aimed at making a living that has an impact on the natural and social environment; that humans must make a living (though what this needs to include is problematic); that the impact of particular activities has been problematic to date and needs to be monitored, altered, stopped, etc; that there is stress on both social and natural environments; and that change can be effected in order that particular activities such as mining minimise their negative effects and maximise their positive. This is why we are taking part in sessions such as this one today. Two more initial observations: First, it strikes me that even with the above assumptions laid out, æsustainabilityÆ and æsustainable developmentÆ are too abstract and general as concepts. We have to break these high and mighty ideals down into workable, bite-size chunks, into practical ways of dealing with the world outside our sites and companies. Second, sustainability, on both sides of the fence, too often focuses on nature and environment as though they are independent of people and community. I would argue, perhaps provocatively, that sustainability is primarily a people issue and has to be tackled as such. I want to look at the overall climate for business today and how it has responded before I return to what we can and need to do as the mining industry to make æsustainabilityÆwork.
