Python Underground Processing Plant Critical Design The use of continuous gravity recovery in combination with a controlled breakage fine crushing and screening system followed by flash flotation has been incorporated into the Python processing plant. This provides miners with a flexible, robust, low cost, low energy pre-concentration process for the recovery of gold and/or heavy minerals. The Python plant incorporates fine crushing utilizing either High Pressure Grinding Rolls or Vertical Shaft Impactors in combination with the InLine Pressure Jig and Flash Flotation to continuously liberate and recover the valuable minerals. The use of these technologies has enabled a narrow, transportable pre-concentration plant to be produced which can easily be installed and operated in underground drifts and tunnels.

Mineral ownership determination is not always straight forward as in many cases the relevant details are not recorded on the latest Land Transfer title held in the local Land Registry Office. To determine mineral ownership can be difficult, time consuming and expensive especially in a confused sector. Non statute minerals can be owned by the Crown, Land Owner or other persons. Statute minerals (Gold, Silver, Petroleum, Uranium) are always owned by the Crown and thus present no problems. In simple terms the only accurate and reliable method of determining the mineral ownership under subject land is to historically search back to the first registration when the land and minerals were definitely intact. Then carefully ascertain from the evidence gathered along the way to the present day whether any legislation or private agreement altered or affected the status quo.

The Golden Cross mine is situated in a sensitive environmental setting on the North Island of New Zealand, about 150 kilometres south-east of Auckland and about 8 kilometres NW of Waihi. The mine is situated in dipping topography, with volcanic ashes making up soils, fault zones running through the area, and rainfall of about 3 m per year on average. Water management is the most demanding environmental challenge on site, and a comprehensive programme has been put in place to address tailings deposition, long term tailings storage, and water treatment during and after operations.   The tailings impoundment is built with an underdrainage system that collects groundwaters and waters that seep through the impoundment. The embankment and impoundment are both built to withstand the Maximum Credible Earthquake and the Probable Maximum Flood. Tailings are treated to remove cyanide and to decrease metal solubility to reduce long term risk to water quality after mining. A state-of-the-art water treatment plant is utilised to treat water from the underdrainage system and water decanted from the top of the tailings pond and stormwaters to remove residual cyanide and metals to extremely high standards with a great deal of reliability and at reasonable cost. Closure of the facility addresses long term post mining water quality issues, and rehabilitation of the area with wildlife habitat as a priority.

Full-scale marker experiments at Cadia Valley underground operations have been ongoing for over 14 years. Initial marker experiments were undertaken in the Ridgeway sublevel cave (RW) (2002), and subsequently at Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) (2008) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) (2012) block caves. Over 25 000 markers have been installed at the three caving operations to date (approximately 20 000, 3000 and 2500 for RW, RWD and CEPC1 respectively). These experiments aimed to quantify and assess the geometry of the extraction zone, development of the extraction zone over time, variability of flow behaviour and factors affecting flow behaviour in both the near and far field cave column. This paper discusses marker recovery results from the RWD and CEPC1 caves.With respect to the two cave operations, marker recovery in both the near field (markers recovered vertically within 70 m of the extraction level) and far field (markers recovered vertically above 70 m of the extraction level) indicates disturbed flow behaviour where marker recovery is not spatially uniform during material extraction. Two distinct patterns or transient behaviours in the extraction zone are indicated. For RWD (advanced undercut), early material recovery was close to the major apex, and expanded towards the centre of the drawbell as more material was extracted. The inverse was observed for CEPC1 (post undercut), where recovery occurred in the centre of the drawbell initially, and expanded outwards towards the major apex. This trend of recovery for the two operations continued in the far field. In the region above the major apex, recovery was observed for all heights, with no clear height of interaction zone (HIZ) indicated. All of these behaviours significantly deviate from both conventional ellipsoidal flow theory and Laubscher’s (2000) design guidelines. For this reason these new mechanisms are termed the Disturbed Extraction Zone (DEZ).For the CEPC1 marker experiment, electronic markers were utilised to investigate the vector movement of material in the near field. Marker recovery movement vectors in the near field indicate extraction zone widths in the order 30 m, with localised marker recovery outside this region (significant horizontal movement of material potentially due to cave muck pile rilling and blast burden movement). This article focuses on TurkeyÆs gold potential with respect to exploration, development and operation after 1985. Apart from TurkeyÆs geology, which offers a substantial number of volcanic-associated gold (Ag) and gold-copper (Au-Cu) projects, there are numerous other factors which make the country a favourable place for mining. Turkey has a mining history which goes back to pre-Roman times and an excellent mining code which ensures security for long-term production. In the country, the Government and local villagers are very positive and the country works extremely well logistically with excellent road and telecommunication links. The opportunities for new discoveries in Turkey are very high. Moreover, Turkey has its eyes turned west as it moves towards joining the European Community and it is no surprise that international companies believe it has got its timing as well as its partner relationship right. Newmont, Teck Cominco, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Eldorado Gold, etc all have direct or indirect interests in Turkey, as do an increasing number of midtier and junior exploration companies. Turkish Koza Gold Mining is the first Au producing company of Turkey. The Eldorado Gold owned 245 t Kisladag Au deposit in Western Turkey is currently also producing Au. In the meantime Anatolia Minerals Development is advancing the 131 t resource at the C÷pler Au deposit in North Eastern Turkey. These are significant world-class deposits. Further encouragement for investment in the Au mining sector has been provided by the introduction of a new mining law in 1985. Foreign investments in the country were encouraged and have seen a rapid increase in the last two decades. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is in excess of five per cent per annum, inflation is down from 70 per cent to single figures, the budget deficit has been cut by 40 per cent to 11 per cent and industrial output and productivity are increasing rapidly. Turkey is politically and economically stable, is a member of the European Customs Union, has a supportive mining legislation, is highly prospective and under-explored and hosts significant recent gold discoveries.

A study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between the quantity and value of economic demonstrated resources discovered for 12 mineral commodities over a ten year period and the expenditure required to yield such mineable resources. The results showed that for every dollar spent on exploration, there is an apparent in-ground average value of around $54 dollars contained in the economic resources found. While this appears to be a satisfactory return, it should be remembered that more than 99.9% of exploration programs are judged to be failures because a viable ore body or mineral deposit was not proved up. What is behind this seeming paradox?   The fundamental truth behind mineral exploration is the fact that the more you explore, the more you find, and that one success will often lead to further discoveries. It appears that one rich and viable deposit creates such surplus that its inherent high value ('the pot of gold') makes up for all the failures. In short, mineral exploration is a high risk business with uncertain returns. However, with skill, enthusiasm, experience and venture capital, it can yield larger than normal returns for the brave and the fortunate.   Analysis of exploration expenditure and economic resources discovered for the period 1987 to 1996 revealed that the apparent in-ground value of economic ore discovered per dollar of exploration expenditure varied from a high of $429 for iron ore and $261 for bauxite to a low of $22 for gold and for lead, and $5 per dollar of diamond exploration expenditure. Preliminary conclusions drawn on the reasons for the variations observed include the inherent ease or difficulty of discovery for different mineral commodities which may in some cases, relate to the natural prospectivity of Australia as a whole. Layered deposits like iron ore and bauxite appear to yield higher in-ground value returns on the exploration dollar. To some explorationists, this may be considered as seemingly obvious, but it may have more to do with very large-exploration tenement grants pursued by various Australian State Governments in the early 1950s and 1960s than the apparent ease of delineating a stratabound deposit.   Despite the apparent relatively low in-ground value produced by the gold exploration dollar of $22, the 5660 tonnes of gold discovered in this ten year period was worth $9.1 billion and representing over a quarter of the new mineral wealth created in the ten years to 1996. This contribution, along with that from the other minerals discovered over the period, led to a significant boost to Australia's export income and standard of living.   It is concluded that, given the nexus between the amount of mineral exploration expenditure and the quantity of new resources likely to be discovered, this knowledge may help policy makers seek to influence the rate of resource discovery in countries like Australia for the benefit of the nation.

This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.

The Tertiary gold deposits of the Hauraki area are predominantly epithermal vein types containing mineral assemblages of quartz, calcite, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, acanthite and native gold (electrum). Sulphosalt, telluride (eg hessite), seleniferous sulphide and selenide minerals are important locally. Studies of wall rock alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions in gangue minerals, and sulphur isotopes of sulphide minerals indicate that the ore forming fluids had the following parameters: pH, near neutral at depth but acidic near surface; temperature, predominantly 320 - 270¦C for base metal dominated assemblages, 280 - 200¦C for precious metal dominated assemblages and generally below 200¦C for late stage barite; apparent salinity, six to zero equivalent weight per cent NaCl; and CO2 concentration, generally around one mole per cent CO2. There is fluid inclusion evidence for boiling during mineralisation in some deposits. Moderate values off S2 and FO2 are indicated for base metal and mixed base metal û precious metal assemblages of most deposits by the predominance of pyrite + chalcopyrite over other iron-bearing phases; primary bornite is absent, whereas pyrrhotite, hematite and magnetite rarely occur in the veins. The largest gold û silver deposits formed from solutions in which the sulphur species in solution were predominantly reduced. Near surface environments and some deep, predominantly base metal, deposits were formed from solutions with approximately equal concentrations of oxidised and reduced sulphur species.

In washability, the objective is to establish the set of maximum possible separation performance criteria for a given mineral feed. The method of choice for this has been the conventional sink–?float analysis. Using traditional sink–float method it is not possible to sample and automatically measure. This fact, as well as time, cost and safety aspects, as well as required and manageable sample size of the sink–float method have prompted the search for a new approach for establishing separation performance criteria. This is especially important as performance levels of separator plants can be maximised if reliable information based on an analysis of washability in conjunction with particle size distribution, elemental constituency becomes available in time. The new method to establish washability and associated performance information utilises at least two measurement technologies concurrently: single energy X-ray transmission and image processing. For porous or very inhomogeneous materials the results can be refined further by using dual energy X-ray transmission and image processing.If used as a standard laboratory device the continuous build-up of the washability curve allows to evaluate the statistical significance of the sample size during measurement.The measuring method can even be improved if it is combined with an automatic sampling system that feeds a continuous and representative particle stream to the analyser. Then the value of the collected data increases considerably since the washability data are additionally available in time to be considered in the control of the process plant. The washability curve can be derived and is continuously updated based on the particles measured during the past time interval. Older curves and results are stored in a database and can be retrieved for later reference. This technology now enables automated sampling and integrated automated measurement, which was previously not possible.This incorporation of an automated washability monitor at a representative sample gives near real-time data that would impinge positively on the profitability of the plant operation. Application of the Anaconda Simplified Work Index for Multiple Test Sizes Vale uses Bond Work Index measurements extensively in a number of applications. The Bond Work Index is usually a good parameter for checking scale up procedures when sizing ball mills, as well as the basis for variability analysis whenever drill core data is available. It is typical to measure between 100 and 150 Bond Work Indexes, depending on the deposit characteristics. The Bond procedure is relatively complex and time costly. It also requires relatively large amounts of sample, which are very expensive to be obtained. The benefits of the Anaconda simplified procedure are: considerably smaller sample requirements and laboratory time. This makes it very much attractive at Vale's development centre, including geometallurgical mapping, operation efficiency control, mine to mill, etc. The Anaconda simplified procedure was implemented and evaluated at Vale's Development Centre using a number of ores and several samples of each ore totalling more than 190 measurements. The Anaconda simplified method was calibrated for several test sieves and a correlation for any test size was determined for Vale's test mill. The calibration was also extended for two sample top sizes. The relative error of the simplified procedure was found to be in the range of nine per cent which is within the expected error Bond standard procedure. The implementation of the Anaconda method at Vale's development center has been used with great success over the past years in several green field, brown field projects and operating plants.

In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. A non-notified resource consent was sought which necessitated that environmental effects be shown to be æless than minorÆ, and resulted from robust science and a pragmatic approach to design. As part of the assessment of environmental effects, there was a need to understand the effects of boron concentrations on aquatic organisms (ie algae, plankton, plants and invertebrates) in the receiving environment. Boron is a naturally occurring element that is found in the form of borates in the oceans, sedimentary rocks, coal, shale, and in some soils but Waikato coals and ashes have particularly high boron content. Boron is an essential micronutrient for higher plants with interspecies differences in the levels required for optimum growth. As aspects of the ANZECC (2000) derived boron limits are based on toxicity of aquatic algae and plants to boron it was important to assess these components in the environment. The effects on the receiving environment of the Awaroa Stream were assessed using predicted water chemistry and comparing actual boron concentrations in a comprehensive and multifaceted reference-condition approach of catchment ecological indicators. In addition a toxicological-based assessment of boron and a re-calculation of the ANZECC trigger levels were undertaken and applied to the ecological indicators. The reference-condition approach revealed that habitat and overall water quality attributes at and between sites was more influential in determining the aquatic biotic communities than boron concentrations alone. There was no evidence of any gradient of changes in ecological indicators with changing boron concentrations, nor evidence of any residual effect of high historic boron concentrations on the aquatic biota.

To many Australian Mining Engineers, we take it, the singular features of banket deposits are not as familiarly known as they would wish, possibly because in the majority of instances they are not in touch with the South African milling world, and have had little opportunity of studying the development of the banket beds, either from correspondence or literature. The writer hazards this opinion feelingly, because, when in Australia and before he had visited Africa, the utmost knowledge he was able to obtnin was a mass of conflicting theoretic discussion as to the agencies which formed the banket bed, without any practical hints as to their geological horizon, the rocks with which they are associated, the usual appearance and character of the ore, in fine, without that everyday detailed description which the miner requires when seeking information regarding mineral or metal deposit foreign in character to any that he has yet studied, or as yet had any opportunity of studying in his own country.The writer recognised that many more able men than he have from time to time discussed the features and formation of the banket beds of the land, notwithstanding which and feeling that many of his Australian colleagues have found themselves in a similar position regarding accurate detailed information respecting these African banket deposits as he himself was, he hopes that the present paper on the said deposits, as found on the fields under notice, will prove useful to some and of interest to all.

Block caving is an underground mining method that can provide high production capacities at low operating costs. This enables the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies and attracts industry towards the method. Block caving operations require significant initial capital investment and predictable cave propagation is crucial to safety and economic success. Lack of access to observe the caving process hinders our ability to learn how the rock mass and geological structures are reacting to mining. Virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) enables the integration and investigation of multiple, large caving data sets and provides a viable alternative to visualise rock mass response without physical access to the cave. Point instrumentation is incapable of providing an overview of cave performance and seismic monitoring, while providing an overview of the rock mass and the response of structures to caving, is only useful when linked to the caving activities. The integration of point instrumentation data with seismic monitoring information, coupled with scientific visualisation of the mining system in a virtual reality environment, provides a powerful means for understanding caving performance.This paper describes the use of a VRSV module at UNSW Australia, designed for investigating the block cave mining system from a case study operation. This module has been used to investigate the location and chronological evolution of seismicity to understand sources of damage resulting in seismic space-time sequences (SSTS) in the caving system. The events within an SSTS represent damage that is spatially and temporally related. An SSTS group represents a collection of microseismic events from a reasonably competent region of the rock mass that has experienced a stress change significant enough to cause sequential damage. SSTS group locations have been seen to be the path of subsequent cave propagation. Thus, SSTS analysis enables insight to further our understanding of rock mass damage in caving geomechanics through analysis of historic data. Grey River Gold Mining Ltd commenced dredging alluvial flats in the Grey River Valley in 1989. Previous drilling indicated over 100 million cubic metres of gravels with some 90 per cent of the gold in the bottom seven metres. The dredge built by Rahco, Spokane, was innovative in a number of aspects but particularly in the fact that a separate ladder with a cutter and pump was used to strip the overburden and a bucketline to mine the gold bearing wash below. Metallurgical studies and exploration were initiated when the project commenced. Leasing and environmental considerations were investigated and action taken. While progress is being made, the operation at this stage is not meeting required production and performance. Main problems have been with the stripping system and wear.
