THE terms kaolin, china clay, ball clay, and paper clay are more or less loosely and interchangeably applied to a large class of white-burning clays. These clays are made up chiefly of hydrous amorphous (colloidal) aluminum silicates with variable amounts of free silica and other impurities in small quantities. Occasionally also the term kaolinite is wrongly applied to a white-burning clay, for kaolinite, is a mineral of definite chemical composition and definite crystalline form which occurs but sparingly in nature. It is not the purpose of this paper, however, to define or classify clays, or to enter into a discussion of the chemistry of clays. It is rather a general description of the occurrence and methods of mining of a kindred group of clays, and a discussion of their future economic aspect. In the Southern Appalachian States, the mining of white-burning clays has in recent years become an important industry. Although these clays are of several distinct types, which occur in as many localities under different geologic conditions, they are for the most part. primarily of the same origin. They are essentially the same in elementary constituents, and are largely consumed in the same industrial arts. From the standpoint of a mining engineer, therefore, and for convenience in comparison and correlation, it should be interesting to discuss them under one heading.

Discussion of the paper of HOWARD N. EAVENSON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 98, February, 1915, pp. 413 to 430. WILLIAM H. GRADY, Bluefield, W. Va.-Mr. Eavenson gave a comparison between accidents in the State of West Virginia and in the Pocahontas field. The figures quoted are, I presume, taken from the reports of the State Mine Inspector. There are no statistics available, in readily accessible form, giving a comparison between the Pocahontas field and the mines of the United States Coal & Coke Co. which are a part of the field. It occurs to me that the paper would be more complete with these data and I will say that the mines of the Pocahontas field produced during the year 1913 about 15,000,000 tons, about 3,000,000 tons of which was produced by the United States Coal &Coke Co. This gives an indication of the extent of its operations. The Pocahontas field lies largely in the counties of McDowell, Mercer, and Wyoming in West Virginia, and Tazewell in Virginia.: Without consulting maps, I should say that all of the acreage under operation at present by this company lies wholly in McDowell County and that the average conditions off roof top and bottom in its mines are the average of the county, but that the worst conditions in some of these mines are the worst to be found in the county. The average conditions in Tazewell County are about the same as in McDowell County, except that the average thickness of the seam is much greater. The average conditions of top and roof and bottom are better in Mercer and Wyoming counties than in the mines of the United States Coal &. Coke Co.; the worst conditions in these counties are not so bad as in McDowell and Tazewell counties and the best are better than those encountered in McDowell and Tazewell counties; also the thickness of seam is less in Mercer and Wyoming counties. This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil ,to be extracted and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled, had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent, interest additional during the life of the property. The initial procedure consisted in making a general reconnaissance of the entire district in which the property was located and determining the lithological and structural conditions underlying the area. In a previous paper1 in which one of the authors collaborated, it was postulated that All dissolved reagents which, in flotation pulps, either by action on the to-be-floated or on the not-to-be-floated particles affect their floatability, junction by reason of chemical reactions of well recognized types between the reagent and the particle affected. This generalization, apparently, like many pioneer structures, had for certain observers a flimsy appearance, and these, judging its stability rather by the number than by the character of its foundation posts, have attempted variously to overthrow it, either by the frontal attack of general denial, or by the flanking movement involved in assuming that those cases in which the facts were unknown or unproved were, therefore, discordant. But as time has passed and further evidence on the question has accumulated, it has become apparent that the results of verifiable experiments add stone by stone to the substructure of the hypothesis, and that the super-tructure has lost nothing in weathering. The present paper constitutes an examination of the opposing positions in the light of the more recent evidence developed. It will clarify the discussion if, at this point, we state more fully the implications of the disputed hypothesis. In the first place, it is explicitly limited to reagents that are dissolved in the water of the flotation pulp. Next, it refers only to such of these dissolved reagents as act on the solid particles in the pulp to affect their floatability. This includes the collectors, activators, and certain depressors and gangue-control reagrnts, but not the pure frothers, and not, necessarily, conditioners whose function seems to be merely that of pH control, although in certain cases it has been demonstrated that such control has the effect of regulating the primary reaction of the collector, depressor, or the like. Finally, there is no limitation as to the nature of the chemical reaction postulated.

RECENT investigations of the molybdenum-carbon alloys have been reported by Becker and Ebert1,? Westgren and Phragmén2, T. Takei3, and H. Tutiya4. Takei3 studied the Mo-C system by employing metal-lographic and X-ray methods, and the other publications described the determination of the crystal structure of the molybdenum carbides. In exploring this system by a technique previously applied to the tungsten-carbon series5, the results of Takei were confirmed with two definite exceptions; i.e., first the composition of the eutectic, and second the nature of the carbon-rich intermediate phase. Consequently, a more thorough examination of the molybdenum-carbon constitution was initiated in an effort to correlate the data supplied by the microstructures, diffraction patterns and chemical analyses.

Increasing realization of the importance of dust control, and the recommendations of various agencies, have led the mining industry to become actively concerned with this problem. The background and necessity for adequate dust-suppression measures have been discussed in a number of publications, including those of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the use of spray water to reduce dust at the face and on roadways has been recommended. The problem resolves itself into obtaining adequate dust reduction at a reasonable cost. Inasmuch as the term "adequate dust suppression" has never been clearly defined, nor have permissible limits of dustiness (in terms of dust count) been established, it is apparent that any method selected may be required to meet additional demands. Until the industry has been given some indication of permissible limits of dustiness, no permanent solution is possible. Progress will be somewhat handicapped until such information is available. In addition, dust reduction must be obtained without the addition of any excessive moisture to the coal, since consideration must often be given to: I. Quality standards, particularly reduction in heat value. 2. Handling characteristics, particularly in regard to unloading from railroad cars and bins. 3. Application of dry methods of coal cleaning. 4. Necessity for fine screening within specified limits of oversize and undersize. Little detailed information is available as to the advantages and disadvantages of the several methods of water distribution, the location and protection of sprays, operating data on pressure, quantity of water, and so forth, and results obtained. In 1940 an investigation was undertaken to determine and evaluate the principal factors involved. This paper constitutes a progress report on this work and cannot in any way be regarded as complete on any one of the several phases. Classification of Dust Sources The various sources of underground dust may be classified as primary or secondary. A primary source is one associated with appreciable degradation of size, that is, where the greater part of the actual fines capable of becoming air-borne dust are produced. A secondary source may be considered as one in which the greater part of the fines have been produced at some previous operation and are in such condition that they can be dispersed as air-borne dust. These conceptions appear to be of practical significance, as experience indicates that when dust is controlled at the primary sources the importance of secondary sources is minimized. For these reasons, investigations to date have been concerned principally with the primary sources of dust, and this paper is concerned particularly with one of these—namely, undercutting. In view of the unfavorable discovery trend that has set in during the past few years, it seems permissible to infer that the large, more easily found crude reserves in Louisiana are now known. Without doubt, many new producing areas will be located, but in the light of development during the past few years the majority of new areas probably will be found at greater depths and from relatively poorer sands. f Although sufficient reserves exist in Louisiana to last at the present rate of production for a considerable period, additional reserves must be found in more intensive development of the presently known structures. In order to ensure the greatest ultimate recovery from such structures, the most advanced technical methods must be employed in their exploitation. Wherever possible, cycling and repressuring plants should be installed. 'here are presently in Louisiana, especially in south Louisiana, a great many fields that contain gas-condensate reservoirs. These reservoirs cannot be produced for their liquid hydrocarbon content under present conditions without wasting an enormous quantity of gas and creating underground waste. Although some of these reservoirs are being produced, such production must be considered in the nature of a salvage operation rather than as a sound economic proposition. Such reservoirs, however, can become profitable ven- tures through the use of cycling and repressuring plants. Cycling operations now operating in Louisiana have increased the ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs anywhere from 10 to 30 per cent. Cycling operations will also provide a considerable reserve of gas, without which Louisiana cannot hope to develop any program of industrialization. During the past year, Louisiana attained the rank of third among the oil-producing states of this country. With a proper program of exploitation and development, and with emphasis on conservation, Louisiana can maintain this position for a great many years. Production On Dec. 31, 1943, oil and/or gas were being. produced in 52 parishes, or 81 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 14 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. Tensas Parish in north Louisiana and Assumption Parish in south Louisiana formerly contained no producing fields but during 1943 joined the ranks of the producing parishes. Twenty-three new fields, including one rediscovery, were found during 1943-—a rate of discovery almost comparable to that of the preceding year. Eleven of these new discoveries were either gas or gas-condensate fields. Thus, the trend of development in finding new reserves was also comparable to that of 1942. Many reasons of considerable merit have been advanced to account for the discouraging lack of crude-oil reserves found during the past year. None are, however, completely satisfactory.

The choice of a nonferrous metal or alloy for a given Application is frequently predicated upon a consideration of properties other than merely the capacity to withstand stress. When ability to withstand stress is the dominant engineering requisite of the material to be used, economic considerations seldom lead to the choice of nonferrous metals and alloys. In most instances where a nonferrous metal is used it is because of some special quality of either corrosion resistance, electrical properties, thermal properties, antifriction, or fabrication advantage that commends its application. The mechanical properties, as a rule, present an incidental engineering consideration entirely secondary to the special quality deciding its use. Indeed, great ingenuity has often been exhibited by engineers and metallurgists in overcoming the mechanical shortcomings of a nonferrous base material. in order to take advantage of some outstanding property. . With this thought in mind, we might better appreciate some of the problems in stress design. encountered with nonferrous metals and alloys pertinent to a symposium on their creep characteristics. Our considerations must necessarily be far from complete because of the broad range of materials in the nonferrous category for which creep properties assume a technical interest. Creep deformation of these metals can be subject for study at temperatures ranging from ambient to incandescent, depending upon which one is under consideration. Whereas the steel metallurgist thinks of creep as an essentially high-temperature engineering consideration, the same is not necessarily true in the field at hand. The diversity of the creep problems in the nonferrous field is perhaps accountable to some extent for its virginity as a symposium subject. Each research has necessarily been sponsored by some organization or group interested either in promoting the use of a certain nonferrous base or in obtaining data toward the solution of a mechanical difficulty encountered in applying a material indispensable for its special attributes. Perhaps as many techniques of creep testing have been used as there are base metals implied under "nonferrous." Some of the creep problems that have occasioned researches are associated with steam-pressure vessels such as tubes, drums, castings, and forgings of copper-base and nickel-base alloys, cable sheathings of lead and lead-base alloys, electrical transmission lines of copper and aluminum, engine parts die-cast from alloys based on zinc, aluminum, copper— soldered and brazed joints-—as well as numerous duties at extremely high temperatures met with alloys based on cobalt, nickel, tungsten, molybdenum, platinum, and other precious or semiprecious metals. Postwar technology will have the benefit of much creep research on nonferrous metals, which for reasons of security cannot be discussed on this occasion. LARGE deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore-are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In' view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute-has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a: form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports. I The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treat-ment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a Y2-ton basic open hearth. The micrographic analysis of silicon steels is possible if a dilute solution of nitric acid and methyl alcohol in nitrobenzol is used. The action of this reagent differs from that of sodium picrate in that there is no persistent deep-seated staining and the solution is used cold. THE technical difficulties hampering the metallographic analysis of silicon steels are chiefly the result of the extreme corrodibility of these alloys. The addition of silicon to iron in increasing quantities, up to about 6 per cent., rapidly increases the susceptibility of the alloy to chemical attack, not only in acid solution, but in water. This renders the preparation of metallographic sections very difficult, because of a non-selective attack upon the finely polished surface by the water used as a lubricant in polishing. This water attack masks the true structural details revealed by suitable etching reagents. It is thus necessary to use alcohol as a polishing lubricant in the last stages of preparation and to avoid all etching reagents having an aqueous base. A specific reagent for the identification of iron carbide in ferrous alloys, and the one hitherto used almost exclusively by metallurgists, is an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium picrate, which stains this constituent selectively. Its application to silicon steels has not proved successful, as its distinctive selective action is more or less completely hidden by the general attack of the aqueous solvent on the silico-ferrite, greatly accentuated by the fact that this reagent must be used at its boiling temperature (105° C.). Thus, a powerful metallographic aid to the study of the higher silicon alloys, such as transformer steels, is lost. A new reagent has been developed for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty. It is with some hesitation that the list of etching reagents, already overburdened, is increased, but the properties of this new reagent are advantageous in several ways and a definite field for it may be found in the metallography of ferrous alloys.

Potash, the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals, ores, and refined products (Table I), owes its importance as an industrial mineral to the potassium requirement of growing plants. The term "potash" originally referred to potassium carbonate produced by the leaching of wood ashes. This process, for which the first U.S. patent was issued in 1790, was the basis for the largest United States chemical industry in the early nineteenth century. The agricultural use of potash soon eclipsed the chemical applications following the German discovery in 1840 that potassium is essential to plant growth. The initial discoveries of large deposits of soluble potassium minerals, essential for agriculture applications, were made in 1857 in Germany and in 1914 in the United States. More than 90% of the 20.4 million short tons K2O produced in the world in 1970 (Eilertsen, 1971 ) was derived from marine evaporite deposits and approximately 90% was used in fertilizers. The potassium content of an ore, mineral, or product is customarily expressed as % K,O, a unit of measure which is neither a natural nor synthetic compound of potassium (1 .O% K is equivalent to 1.2046% K,O) . Geology Potassium, the seventh most abundant element in the earth's crust, is present in silicate minerals in igneous, sedimentary and meta- morphic rocks. Potassium is also a major constituent of many surface and subsurface brines (Table 2). Economic potash deposits are essentially restricted, however, to widespread, thick accumulations of marine chloride evaporite deposits. These deposits yield high grade, large tonnage ore bodies, many of which are amenable to low cost mining and beneficiation. The products from these deposits are, moreover, ideal for use in fertilizer because of the high relative solubility of the potassium chloride and sulfate evaporite minerals. World potash production and reserves for such de- posits so vastly overshadow other sources of potassium that the following discussion will be limited largely to potash deposits in marine evaporites with brief reference to certain potash-rich brines. Approximately 85% of current domestic production is from bedded salt deposits and much of the balance is from brines. Marine evaporite deposits are accumulations of salt minerals deposited in structural sedimentary basins through the evaporation of sea-water or mixtures of seawater and other brines. The salt minerals are precipitated in assemblages and sequences of assemblages as determined by the compositions of the brines and the solubility relations in the salt systems (D'Ans, 1933). The evaporation of seawater normally yields carbonate minerals as the first precipitates (Table 3). Further evaporation and concentration of the brine leads to the precipitation, in succession, of sulfate, chloride, and supersaline mineral assemblages including the salts of potassium and magnesium. The common minerals, ores, and products of potassium deposits are listed in [Table 1]. Many potash deposits contain accessory evaporite minerals together with a variety of detrital and authigenic silicates (Braitsch, 1971).

A large consolidated sand core was used in this investigation. Four groups of experiments including gas drives, water drives, and water drives combined with gas injection, were made. The results of the gas-drive experiments indicate that greater ultimate recovery may be obtained by higher pressure gradients. However, other considerations challenge the absolute veracity of this conclusion. Results indicate that with connate water present and a low pressure gradient during a gas drive, less gas is required to produce a given amount of oil. The saturation gradient determined during a gas drive is presented. Results of the water-drive experiments indicate that the recovery of oil is not a function of either gradient Or input rate. The presence of initial gas saturation resulted in a slightly lower final oil saturation. Injection of sufficient gas to maintain the initial gas saturation during a water drive resulted in lower final oil saturation. Introduction With the demand for petroleum products reaching an all-time record high and the location and exploitation of new reserves becoming more difficult and expensive, the oil industry must look to more thorough and efficient methods of producing the petroleum already located. Much of the previous work along these lines is exploratory and suggests a more complete investigation. For example, a great amount of laboratory work has been done on flooding sands initially saturated roo pct with oil. Since sands saturated roo pct with oil rarely, if ever, exist in nature, and because the water content is a vital factor in the ultimate recovery from the sand, laboratory investigations on cores without water must be supplemented by comparable work on cores with water present.1'2 Other investigators have done a considerable amount of laboratory work using gas and water drives.3 Krutter and Day4 have reported results of investigations using cores saturated IOO pct with oil and have concluded that " the ultimate recovery obtained, using air drive, from a completely oil-saturated core depends on the pressure gradients used. The higher the pressure gradient, the greater will be the recovery until a certain Pressure range is reached above which the reward of increased recovery is much smaller for similar increments in pressure." Yuster and Day6 conclude that less gas and less time are required to produce a given quantity of oil at high pressure gradients than at low pressure gradients; they also conclude that an increase in the viscosity of the oil requires a proportionate increase in the gas needed for recovery. Their results indicate that the gas required to produce a given quantity of oil is greatly reduced by the presence of connate water. R. C. Experiments of previous investigations have indicated that calcium-copper alloy, when used as a deoxidizer for molten copper, results in a sound copper casting of good physical and electrical properties. Braden-berg and Wiensl have obtained successful results in casting sound copper using calcium for deoxidizing. Masing2 has obtained deoxidized copper of high density and high conductivity by use of calcium. Pratt,3 in 1907, patented the use of calcium for the deoxidation and degasification of copper. Schumacher, Ellis and Eckel,l in 1929, conducted a series of experiments on deoxidizing copper with calcium. They concluded that so long as there is only a small percentage of residual calcium the mechanical and electrical properties of the copper deoxidized are not impaired, and the deoxidation is thorough. For this investigation, a copper-calcium alloy high in calcium and 10 variously deoxidized copper ingots were prepared. The investigation concerns itself with the casting properties and structure of these variously deoxidized ingots, their working and annealing characteristics, and the resulting physical and electrical properties of the worked materials. Preparation of Special Copper-calcium Alloy and Experimental Ingots For use as a deoxidizing agent, an alloy of copper and calcium with fairly high calcium content was prepared, by melting pure electrolytic copper in a graphite crucible in an ordinary gas-fired pot furnace. The molten copper was kept well covered with calcium chloride slag. Small chunks of calcium were wrapped in thin copper sheet, placed on the end of a graphite rod and plunged down into the molten copper and thoroughly stirred. Upon completion of the calcium additions the crucible content was poured out into a cake about one inch thick. Analysis of this alloy gave 4.4 per cent calcium. An extremely hard, tough, and strong, white or chilled cast iron has been applied for the past several years to industrial and mining services in which its unusual properties have been confirmed by its ability to deliver in many instances much better performance than plain chilled iron, or other wear-resistant materials. It is being produced regularly by alloying a good base composition of chilled or white cast iron with essentially 4 to 6 per cent of nickel and 1 to 2.5 per cent of chromium. Such a material can attain a hardness exceeding 600 to 750 Brinell as against 380 to 530 for corresponding grades of plain chilled iron. The strength is approximately doubled and the toughness significantly increased. These properties make it especially useful for many applications requiring a high hardness for resistance to wear, abrasion, attrition, deformation; to some extent to high compressive loading and to a lesser but important degree to corrosive action. A wide variety of commercial castings is being successfully produced from this iron, ranging in size from the small grain-grinding plates or burrs through medium-sized castings such as sand pumps up to large, heavy castings such as rolls for metal rolling or cement grinding. The composition of this white cast iron may be roughly bracketed within the range shown in Table 1.

THE purpose of this paper is to state briefly the inspection requirements of the Bureau of Ordnance, the specifications governing the inspection, and the physical and chemical properties of the steel used in the construction of ordnance for our Navy. It would be of interest to evoke discussion on points in these specifications which do not tend to insure the production of the very best material for the purpose intended. In other words, what requirements of our specifications are useless and also in what manner are our specifications deficient? It might be well at the, start to answer the first criticism of this paper which will probably be made, and that is that the title does not agree with the subject matter. Considering metallographic work as covering only the macroscopic and microscopic examination of metals, this paper will have gone beyond the subject; but it is believed that a broader definition of metallography is that it is the study of the relation of the internal structure of metals and alloys to their composition and to their physical and- other properties. The internal structure of steel is dependent on its physical and its chemical properties. These physical properties are dependent on the chemical composition and the mechanical and thermal treatment of the steel. So it seems that this subtitle would not be entirely necessary and that the title "Metallography of Steel for Ordnance Purposes" would cover a study, not only of what we can learn of macroscopic and microscopic examination, but broadly of the whole subject of the specifications, the fulfillment of the requirements of which produce the structural conditions revealed by macroscopic and microscopic examination. .

IT is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly some recent large power stations for blast furnaces, where the blast is exclusively supplied by gas engines using furnace gas. The stations are given in the chronological order in which they were designed, in order to indicate the various improvements suggested by experience. Fig. 1 shows the blowing-engine station of the Bethlehem Steel Co. at Bethlehem. Although the picture shows only five blowing engines, the house now contains 11 engines. In the diagrammatic. plan the arrow shows the position and direction of camera. This station handles five modern blast furnaces of 450 to 500 tons capacity each. In this, as in all the other stations described in this paper, each furnace is blown by-two single tandem gas engines. Ten engines are thus required for five furnaces, leaving one single tandem spare engine. This spare capacity has been shown by several years' experience at Bethlehem to be adequate to insure continuous operation. The engines in the Bethlehem station are right hand and left hand, arranged in pairs. The outboard bearings of each pair are close together so that there is not room for passageway between them. On the right of the picture are shown the inclined drums communicating with the cold-blast lines outside of building, so that any engine may be operated on any furnace. The illustration shows four cold-blast gate valves with pipes passing through wall, but since the photograph was taken the drums have been extended to take care of a fifth valve for a fifth furnace. At the extreme back of the picture can be seen the tubs of three twin vertical-horizontal Southwark steam blowing engines, which, although of modern design and as good as new, are not operated because of the greatly reduced blowing cost shown by the gas blowing engines.

International Nickel has 15 operating mines in Canada, and. 3 mines which are being maintained on a standby basis. Annual production is about 20 million dry short tons of ore, most of which is from underground mines, the remainder from open pit mines. Although some of the underground mines are served by ramps for trackless vehicles, most men, materials and ore are hoisted in vertical shafts. In addition to shafts and raises for ventilation and service purposes which are not equipped with hoisting plants, there are now 28 vertical shafts at Inco mines served by 47 hoists. Of these, 22 shafts and 36 hoists are located in the Sudbury District of Ontario, one shaft and two hoists are at the Shebandowan mine in Western Ontario, and 5 shafts with 9 hoists are located near Thompson, Manitoba. This paper describes the components of Inco hoisting plants-which have been applied at different times and under different conditions, and indicates the rationale for the various designs. Some engineering and maintenance practices, considered advantageous, are also described. MINE SHAFTS Many of the shafts sunk in the early days of the Sudbury District, on what are now Inco properties, were inclined shafts. Of the identifiable shafts sunk between 1885 and 1920, thirteen were inclined and at least four were vertical. Since 1920, thirty vertical and two inclined shafts have been sunk. All of the inclined shafts have been abandoned for hoisting purposes but the majority are still in use as service or ventilation ways. Shafts at Thompson- and Shebandowan are all vertical. The vertical shafts range from 2 or 3 compartment exploration and development shafts to 6 compartment shafts for ore, man and material hoisting. They vary in depth from 1,050 to 7,137 feet and in addition to hoisting compartments all contain manway and service compartments. Prior to 1948, unlined rectangular shafts with timber sets and guides were used. The rectangular cross-section was favoured since the rock is competent, the shape compatible with timber set framing, and since available shaft space could be used efficiently. Resistance to air flow was not of prime importance. Concrete linings were introduced for the first time at the Creighton No. 7 Shaft which was collared in 1948. All major shafts since that date have been concrete lined. Vertical set intervals were increased in steps, with the introduction of structural steel sets secured to the concrete linings. Whereas 7 foot set intervals were used with timber framing, this increased to 10 feet 6 inches with steel sets and more recently to 15 feet with steel and steel backed wood guides. With the advent of deeper shafts, or shafts which are expected to be deepened, the trend is to circular concrete lined shafts. The majority of shaft guides in service are of select Douglas Fir.
