IN the course of the past 75 years the treatment of copper ores has undergone the most profound changes. To a lesser degree, this is true of all the nonferrous metals, but the rapid increase in the demand for copper due to the phenomenal growth of the electrical industry, and the discovery of vast new ore deposits in Michigan, Montana and Arizona, provided an exceptional incentive for improvements in smelting practice and for large-scale operations. Because these must perforce be carried on in regions where labor was scarce and wages high, the need for mechanization and larger smelting units soon became apparent. At a later date the porphyry coppers were discovered, with ores so low in grade that enormous tonnages had to be treated daily if they were to be made to pay at all. In some instances these ores were associated with, or overlain by, oxidized ores, which could not be concentrated mechanically and, of course, could not be smelted directly. This led to the development of the copper-leaching process. While the principles of the various smelting and leaching processes are for the most part of European origin, and have long been known, modern practice is essentially American and was evolved on this side of the Atlantic. The ores of copper may be divided into three general classes; viz, native copper, sulphide and oxidized ores. Shortly after the middle of the nineteenth century, the invention of the regenerative open-hearth furnace and the development of the Bessemer process stimulated a rate of steel production whose magnitude created an unprecedented demand for pig iron. Revolutionary improvements in furnace design, auxiliary equipment, and operating technique enabled the blast furnace to keep abreast of the constantly increasing requirements of the steel mill. The development of improved blowing equipment, more adequate facilities for material handling, and particularly the general use of anthracitc and coke to replace the physically weaker charcoal, led to a rapid expansion in both the height and volume of furnaces. Beyond a doubt, however, the greatest single factor in blast-furnace improvement at this time was the use of the higher blast temperatures made available by the replacement of the recuperative iron pipe stoves by the regenerative Cowper brick stove. The increased blast temperature not only resulted in greater output but also reduced fuel consumption . far more than could be explained by the additional heat content of the blast. The progress of iron manufacturing was thus largely mechanical and thermal. Little attention was given the chemistry of the process until the publication of the investigations of Sir Lowthian Bell.1 Bell's painstaking experiments and investigations gave to the blast-furnace man his first real scientific conception of blast-furnace chemistry. Bell's recognition of the dual function of the carbon, the technical importance of reversible reactions and chemical equilibria, and his conception of the degree of oxidation of the carbon as shown by the analysis of the outgoing gases as a criterion of furnace efficiency, laid the foundation upon which has since been erected the structure of blast-furnace theory. Prominent among those availing themselves of Bell's data as .a basis of further study was M. L. Gruner,2 professor of the French School of Mines. It has been observed that deformation in iron takes place by slip on (110) + {112) + (123) planesl, 2, but in silicon ferrite with low deformation temperatures or high silicon contents (exceeding 4 per cent) the authors have found that slip is confined wholly to (110) planes, at least with small amounts of deformation. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effect of this alteration of slip mechanism on preferred orientations in cold-rolled and recrystallized strips. Incidental observations on the effect of the recrystallization temperature were also made. The numerous determinations of the texture of cold-rolled iron and steel have been in satisfactory agreement as to the principal features of the texture (with the exception of a few conclusions that apparently have been based on insufficient data). The texture is chiefly one in which 11101 directions of the grains lie along the direction of rolling, with a deviation of a few degrees, and in which the (100) planes lie in the plane of the rolled sheet, with a deviation from this position chiefly about the rolling direction as an axis. This deviation about the rolling direction as an axis has been measured by different observers and lies between about 45" and 50" or 60" for iron5, 6, 9 and is usually in the neighborhood of 50" for mild stee16, 7, 8. The range of this deviation is a function of the percentage of total reduction8, 10. Post8 reported that it decreases with increasing percentage reduction, but apparently he studied only the surface material, which Gensamer and Meh17 found to be somewhat differently oriented from the material in the inside of the sheet. McLachlan and Davey10 found that the deviation also decreases with increasing percentage of total reduction for the material in the interior of the sheet and is independent of the percentage of reduction per pass. THE practice of adding moderate quantities of nickel to a variety of bronzes has been employed by foundrymen for many years with several objects in view. In some instances it was desired- to harden the alloy; in others it was to increase the fluidity or to improve the solidity of the castings, or to refine their grain. These important matters have been considered in detail by Pilling and Kihlgren1 and by numerous other workers cited by them, and with the exception of the first will not be considered in the present communication. The possibility of reducing the cost of bronze by replacing a portion of the tin with nickel received attention some years ago by Burgess and Woodward,2 and, as will be shown later, offers attractive savings in cost under present conditions. The age-hardening characteristics of the nickel bronzes of appropriate compositions have been known for some time and were mentioned by Price, Grant and Phillips3 and discussed by Wise4 in connection with their paper. These matters are further considered in recent patents,5 and are becoming of commercial importance in the production of high-strength castings.

INTRODUCTION This chapter summarizes characteristics of porphyry copper deposits within the Cordilleran orogen east of the Coast Range plutonic complex of the Yukon and British Columbia and south to the Columbia River plateau and the Idaho batholith. Porphyry copper deposits in this area reflect a geologic environment different from that found for mineralized intrusions elsewhere in the Cordilleran orogen, both to the south in the United States and Mexico and to the west in Alaska. A section on the Tertiary Cascade porphyry copper province is included herein. The Cascade province is considered separately because its deposits display a unique mineralogy and age of mineralization. That portion of the Cordilleran orogen described in this chapter is shown in Fig. 32, with the Cascades shown in Fig. 39 (see p. 114). The regional geology of this area has been described by Monger, et al. (1972), Hollister (1974), Wolfhard and Ney (1974), Field, et al. (1974), and Stacey (1974). Each offer slightly differing views on the post-Mississippian evolution of the geology in this porphyry copper province. The descriptive geology in this chapter has benefited from many discussions with J. E. Armstrong and J. W. H. Monger. Two separate petrologic models have been used popularly to categorize porphyry copper deposits in this area, a diorite and a quartz monzonite model. The diorite model, which involves a mineralized quartz-free pluton, has also been called the alkalic type (CZM Special Volume 15, 1976, and Soregaroli, 1975) and the syenite suite (Sutherland Brown, et al., 1971). The quartz monzonite model has also been named the calcalkalic type (CZM Special Volume 15, 1976) and includes mineralized quartz-bearing plutons compositionally ranging from quartz diorite to granite, with the igneous phase closest to ore in time and space commonly being quartz monzonite.

IN the United States, fully 98 per cent. of the anthracite and bituminous coal tonnage obtained from underground operations is mined by the room-and-pillar system. Under this system, the total cost of the coal f. o. b. railroad cars contains as its greatest single item the money paid for "labor." Each labor dollar in an. average bituminous mine may be subdivided into 85 c. paid for work done inbye the gathering turnouts (including all work at the face), and 15 c. outbye that point (including all work in and under the tipple). In an average anthracite mine, the corresponding figures are 70 c. and 30 c., the larger breaker force accounting mainly for the difference between these and the bituminous figures. The next largest single item after "labor" is usually "supplies and power;" and a division of this item inbye and outbye the gathering turnouts shows somewhat the same relative proportions as has been noted under the case of "labor". During the past 10 years, the chief advances made in the coal industry have been to obtain economies through complete mechanization covering that portion of the work which lies outbye the gathering turnouts. These results have been accomplished by applying scientific principles to railroad yard layout, to cleaning and sizing machinery, to dumping facilities, to roller-bearing haulage equipment, and to heavy-rail, well-ballasted trackage. But these improvements, while gratifying in their resulting economies, apply only to 15 to 30 per cent. of the important cost items. Obviously, then, the big problem before the engineers of the coal industry today has to do with the methods of mining and the layout inbye the gathering turnouts. Four years ago, Weston Dodson & Co., Inc., determined to have an exhaustive study made of the conditions which must be met in order to gain complete face mechanization, and in order that such a mining layout would be based on, correct underlying principles. The result of that study, which was made by the writer, led to the adoption of a method of longwall mining wherein the. roof is worked on the caving system and is supported as an overhang along the face by steel jacks.

Proper use of automatic controls in the process industries is a combination of art and science. Although many phases of automatic control theory can be expressed by precise mathematical relationships, the final control arrangement usually requires considerable effort by trial and error before the optimum control circuit is found. The failure of flotation operators to recognize that control circuits require study and plant experimentation before satisfactory operation occurs has led to a popular misconception that flotation plants simply do not lend themselves to automation. This widespread belief has been overcome to some degree in recent years by the numerous installations of automatic controls that have paid their way by increasing profits in terms of increased recoveries, lowered costs, or higher grade concentrates. WHY CONTROL ? Any form of automation must be justified in terms of ultimate return on in- vestment by improving quality, by increasing plant throughput, or by reducing the total operating costs. Generally speaking, automatic controls rarely re- place a mill operator. They assist the operator in holding important variables within predetermined limits. Large tonnage operations usually can justify a great deal of automation because an increase in one or two units of recovery results in enormous savings compared to the capital and operating costs of controls. DETERMINATION OF CONTROL The first questions in considering plant automation are: 1) What variables must be controlled? 2) What are the optimum levels of the variables? The optimum operating conditions for any process are those which maximize profits. Many of the variables active in flotation processing can be determined by experimentation in the laboratory or pilot plant 10. Although laboratory experiments can pinpoint variables, the true optimum conditions existing at plant level usually must be determined by plant scale experiments. As shown in three recent papers by the author,6,7,8 in two papers by McAdam and Mebs,9,10 and in a paper by McAdam, Mebs, and Geil,11 the technical cohesive strength of a metal, in any particular state as regards mechanical treatment and heat-treatment, cannot be represented by a single stress value, but must be represented by a diagram with the principal stresses? as coordinates. Each point on the boundary of such a diagram represents a technical cohesion limit. The technical cohesive strength thus comprises an infinite number of technical cohesion limits, each representing fracture under a specific stress combination. Moreover, neither the yield strengths nor the ultimate strength can be represented completely by a single stress value, but must be represented by a diagram with the principal stresses as coordinates. All combinations of the principal stresses may be classified in three groups as illustrated by Fig. I. Fig. Ia shows three typical stress combinations with no two principal stresses equal. The magnitude of each principal stress is indicated qualitatively by the length of the arrow. Arrows pointing away from the cube indicate tensile stresses; arrows pointing toward the cube indicate compressive stresses. Typical stress combinations with two principal stresses equal are illustrated in Figs. Ib and Ic. Such stress combinations would be produced by subjecting a cylinder to combinations of uniform axial and radial stresses. The uniform radial stress may be resolved into two equal principal stresses, with the mutually perpendicular directions rotatable around the axis of the cylinder. Fig. Ib shows stress combinations with S2 equal to Sa. The greatest principal stress is in the axial direction, and the stress combination tends to cause either absolute or relative increase in length.* Fig. Ia shows stress combinations with Ss equal to Sl. The greatest principal stress is in the radial direction, and the combination tends to cause either absolute or relative decrease in length. The complete representation of either technical cohesive strength, yield strength, or ultimate strength generally requires a three-dimensional diagram. When two of the principal stresses are kept equal, however, the strength of a metal may be represented by a two-dimensional diagram with the coordinates representing the axial and radial stresses.6-11 In this paper, attention will be confined almost entirely to stress combinations with two of the prin-

The advances in basic open-hearth practice which have occurred during the past decade have been principally in the direction of the physical development of larger units, decreased fuel consumption and increased length of furnace campaigns. However gratifying the economies which have resulted from these improvements are, it must be granted that like advances in chemical, physical-chemical and metallurgical knowledge pertaining to open-hearth practice would have added greatly to these already attained reductions in costs and it is the purpose of this paper to stimulate the discussion and study of these phases of cooperation and their relation to ingot yields. Definition and Calculation oF Losses In discussing basic open-hearth yields, the writer refers to the ingot yields obtained in the process of converting pig iron, scrap and ore to steel. In this conversion some scrap is produced. The difference between the total weight of ingots and scrap produced and the original metallic charge constitutes the loss. Basic open-hearth yields vary considerably, and while some of the divergencies can be explained metal-lurgically because of differences in slag analysis, proportion of pig charges, and character of steel made, there often remain differences that apparently do not readily disclose themselves. In reconciling yields by the usual accepted methods of calculation, one is often forced to evaluate large losses as ((unaccounted for." Such a system is prone to accept these large losses as inherent to the operat.ion and not, susceptible of appraisement and correction. It is obvious that if the ingot yield plus the scrap recovered subtracted from 100 per cent. determines the loss, a drop in yield may increase the loss or the scrap, and both contribute to a monetary loss. To be sure, one can subdivide these unaccounted for losses into various components, such as metallics in slag, free Fe in slag, spillage, etc., and thereby reduce the amount of losses considered as "unaccounted for." If empirical methods could indicate with some degree of accuracy all losses, however slight, the undetermined losses become appreciably smaller and resultant calculations will check actual

The paper deals with the investigation of two types of coreless induction furnaces, one of 60 cycles, the other of 5000 cycles. Nickel was used as test material and the absorption of oxygen by molten nickel was chosen for determining the influence of the frequency on the metallurgical characteristics of the furnaces. Dr. Herty's aluminum method, slightly modified, was found suitable for determining the nickel oxide content in nickel. Also an electrolytic method for determining alumina in nickel was worked out. The solubility-temperature relations for nickel oxide in molten nickel were determined approximately. It was found that the solubility of nickel oxide increases with the temperature. Comparative tests on the rate of oxygen absorption made in a 60 and a 5000-cycle furnace showed that the absorption of nickel oxide in nickel is an increasing function of turbulence, time and temperature. The rate of oxygen pickup in the 60-cycle furnace is about three times as great as in the 5000-cycle furnace. In the 60-cycle furnace the maximum oxygen content of the melt comes close to the saturation limit. Melting under an oxygen-free atmosphere prevents oxidation in both types of furnaces. THE manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In. certain respects they strongly resemble those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia. Viewed from the present condition of the maganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments; youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide of both areas. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate amount of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows largely of basic types. To this series I have given the name Birrim. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. As the characteristics of these non-fossiliferous strata at many places are the same as those of strata in many parts of the world that are suitable for the preservation of fossils and that contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim series have normally a northeast-southwest strike and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts., From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed across their strike for more than 600 miles to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence. they probably extend much further into French Territory.

ClameR,* Philadelphia, Pa.—Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early days, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used. Korea, the ancient" Hermit Kingdom," is a peninsula jutting out from the coast of eastern Asia. By the natives it is called " Chosen," nfhich, translated, means " Land of the Morning Calm." It lies between the Yellow sea and the Sea of Japan. On the north it is separated from Manchuria and the Russian province of Primorsk by the Yalu and Tiumen rivers; on the south the Korcan straits interpose a rough voyage of 120 nliles to the nearest point in Japan. The entire country is situated between the parallels of 34O and 42O N. latitude. The surface of the country is made up of successive ranges of ul~glaciated mountains, separated by narrow, fertile, and more or less densely populated, valleys. Through all the obscure centuries of its history, Korea has succeeded in maintaining a monastic seclusion, over which, from time immeniorial until the late Chino-Japanese war in 1894, China exercised a shadowy sovereignty. Although Korea had been forced into slight foreign contact previously, her first forcign treaty was signed with Japan in 1876. Under the restraining guardianship of China, the Japanese treaty bore but infiignificant innovations for Korea; but when, in 1883, a treaty was made with the United States, the first of the western nations, a decade after the American gunboats, under Commodore Rodgers and Lieutenant Schley, forced their may up the Salee river, Korea awoke from her sleep of 4,000 years. The Eorean peninsula suddenly became the arena where the enterprises and individuals of many foreign nations met in fiercest rivalry. Out of this struggle grew two singularly successful American enterprises, both of which have played an important part in developing the natural resources of the country. " The obscurity which still veils from us the true nature of veins will become more and more cleared up when they can be considered in connection with the geological structure of the regions in which they occur."* These words, according to Lossen, the biographer of the late Dr. A. von Groddeck, of Clausthal, were the last received by him from that eminent man, perhaps the most far-sighted and carefully progressive of recent writers on ore-deposits. They seem to me to form a fitting text for what I am about to say; since I find that many of the conclusions at which I have arrived by my own study of the structural relations of ore-deposits, or, in other words, of the structural and dynamic geology of the regions in which they occur in this country, have been similarly determined by him within recent years in Europe, and especially in his home field of work, the Hartz. I shall not enter upon a detailed account of how far other workers may have arrived at similar conclusions with myself, since these questions of priority are of little interest, except to those immediately concerned; but will briefly present the methods by which, in my work in this country, I have arrived at certain generalizations, and will point out the practical bearing which they may have upon the work of mining engineers. The fall of rock from strip coal mine highwalls continues to be the largest single source of fatal accidents, so methods to improve highwall stability through improved blasting practices were investigated in the field. This paper covers the results of a project to improve, using existing and proven technology, unstable highwall conditions through better blasting practices in Appalachian strip coal mines. Better borehole blasting agent distribution and optimization of burden, spacing, and delay periods allowing satisfactory breakage with minimal backbreak were the objectives. At a selected field site, geologic conditions were closely examined with regard to joint orientation and spacing, and resulting slope stability considerations. Utilizing surface blasting concepts of trying to achieve flexural failure of the rock mass both horizontally and longitudinally by appropriate relationships between burden, spacing, and hole length, as well as delay time sequence to achieve optimal confinement and breakage, successful results were achieved. A test series of eight blasts was completed and the resultant highwall monitored by repetitive photography. Actual blockfalls could be measured and the stability for each blast design thus quantified. The study of drilling and blasting economics along with equipment performance led to an economic model of blast parameters and the identification of blast design cost benefits. The work demonstrated that small strip mining companies are able to achieve a more stable highwall excavation utilizing presently available technology, equipment, and explosive products at improved operational cost and safety.

The following paper, submitted by the Russian petroleum authorities, was secured through the courtesy of G. V. Ackerman, Vice President of Amtorg Trading Corporation, and N. V. Vannikoff, Representative in the U.S.A. of the United Oil and Gas Industries of the U.S.S.R. It gives an excellent view of the Russian petroleum industry as seen through Russian eyes. Noteworthy is the tremendous area over which the Russians are searching for petroleum, for this paper refers to such far-flung areas as the Arctic Tamir Peninsula, Kamchatka and Sakhalin on the Pacific, Lake Baikal in Central Siberia, the great new discovery at Neftadag in the plains of West Turkestan, and the oil of the Ferghana oasis, where the derricks look out over to the mosques of Kokand. Of interest also is the new pipe line to supply the industrial centers of Ukraine grouped around the great hydroelectric plant built at Dneprotroy on the falls of the Dnieper. The technical achievements have been noteworthy and we must pause to consider the scope of the undertakings being carried forward. Russia is at the worst a good second to the United States in petroleum reserves and for a long time to come will be a most important factor in the petroleum markets of the world. Her story should be of interest to everyone in the industry. The First Five Year Plan The first Five Year Plan, covering the period 1928-29 to 1932, accomplished the task of transforming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics from an agricultural, backward land into a powerful independent industrial country, with an advanced technological foundation of its own for finally achieving the social reconstruction of the entire national economy. Along with the gigantic forward 'strides in industry and transportation, radical changes took place in agriculture. The creation of more than 5000 great state farms and of more than 200,000 collective farms serviced by a widespread network of machine-tractor stations has brought the U.S.S.R. to the fore as the largest agricultural country in the world. Imports of tractors and other agricultural machinery in the initial years of the Five Year Plan and the intensive output of this equipment by the great plants of the U.S.S.R. in the latter years of the plan have brought about the mechanization of agriculture in the Soviet Union.
