The Republic of Colombia is the northernmost country of South America. Its northern coast line exteilds from the frontier of Costa Rica to that of Venezuela, on the Caribbean Sea. On the west it fronts on the Pacific Ocean, along the Panama Isthmus, and down to Ecuador. It is bounded on the south by Ecuador, Peru and Brazil, which latter country with Venezuela form its boundaries on the east. Its area exceeds 500,000 square miles. It is deemed unnecessary to give here a map of the country. Fig. 1, a map of the department of Antioquia, studied in connection with a good modern general map of Colombia, will explain itself. Fig. 1 contains also some of the region of the Cauca valley, described in this paper. Access.—The interior of Colombia is reached through the ports of Sabanilla and Cartagena on the Caribbean Sea, each of which places is connected with the Magdalena river by a short narrow-gauge railroad, running respectively to Barranquilla and Calamar. From these points lines of river-steamers serve the ports of the upper Magdalena, which they reach in journeys of a week to ten days. After leaving the steamer, a short railroad journey, followed by a long and tedious mule-ride, reaches the cities of Bogota and Medellin. Quibdo, at the head of the navigation of the Atrato, and its most important town, is connected by steamer-service with Cartagena, by canoe-routes with the various districts of the Choco, and by mule-road, at present well-nigh impassable, with the heart of Antioquia. On the western coast the port of Tumaco is a starting-point for canoe- and mule-travel to the southern part of the department of Cauca, while Buenaventura is the port of the central section of the valley of the Cauca,

The property of the Andes Copper Mining Co. is in the central part of the Republic of Chile, Province of Atacama, about 75 miles to the eastward from the port of Chafñaral. At this point the Andean system is made up of two principal ranges, and the mine and metallurgical plant are both on the westerly slope of the outer or western range. Mean elevation of the mine is 10,500 ft., while at the plant the elevation ranges from 9445 to 9700 ft. A meter gage railroad extends from the company's port at Barquito, near Chañaral, to the reduction plant at Potrerillos. This road has a total length of 94 miles, of which 57.79 miles are owned by the Andes Copper Mining Co. and the remainder of the road is controlled by the State. Development of the Potrerillos mine and installation of the metallurgical equipment presented unusual difficulties due to the arid nature of the country, high altitude and remoteness of the location from any considerable center of population. As a primary step it was necessary that railroad transportation be provided in order that mine development and plant construction could go forward on an economical basis. Provision of an adequate supply of water for domestic and metallurgical uses involved the construction of approximately 178 miles of pipe lines, all of which have their sources at altitudes ranging from 12,000 to 14,000 ft. above sea level and traverse rough and difficult terrane. Water for metallurgical use is brought to Potrerillos from the Ola River, a stream originating in the high cordillera to the eastward from the property. It is delivered by means of a steel pipe line, 32 miles long, having diameters ranging from 22 to 36 in. Domestic water is supplied to the various camps through a system of pipe lines aggregating 146 miles in length, the Ola water being unfit for this purpose. These conductors gather water from numerous springs in the high mountains to the eastward from Potrerillos and deliver it to the mine, the reduction works and the port at Barquito. The first attempt to establish an equilibrium diagram of the lead-antimony series was made by Roland-Gosselinl in 1896. This investigation classified the system as a purely eutectiferous one, with the eutectic at 12.5 per cent. antimony and 228" C. In the next year, Stead2 placed the eutectic temperature at 247' C. The error in temperature made by Roland-Gosselin, however, has been perpetuated in the literature with a remarkable degree of persistency; this value was accepted by Campbell (1902), and Ewen (1910),3 and will be found in the last edition of Desch's3 Metallography (1922). Gonterman's investigation, made in 1907, was the most complete one available at the time .the present investigation was started. He concluded4 that the system was a simple eutectiferous one and placed the eutectic at 13 per cent. antimony and 247° C. Other investigations by Tammann (1907),5 Garbow (1909),6 Rudolfi (1910),7 Loebe (1911),8 and Leroux (1913)9 added little, if anything, to Gonterman's diagram. A number of investigations have been made of physical properties of the alloys. The electrical conductivity of the series was studied by Matthiessen (1860)10 and by A. W. The users of barite in the United States derive their supply partly from the domestic production and partly from the imports from foreign countries. According to the Mineral Resource division of the U. S. Geological Survey, the domestic production of barite in 1913 was 45,298 short tons, valued at $156,275, or $3.45 a ton, and the imports of crude barite were 35,840 short tons, valued at $61,409, or $1.71 a ton. These figures clearly show a decided advantage in cost of the foreign over the domestic barite to users in the United States. The difference in cost is the only advantage to the consumer of foreign barite, for there are large reserves of the mineral in the United States of good grade. The production of many of the operating mines is capable of decided increase, and it is believed that the operating mines together with the large reserves of undeveloped deposits of barite are entirely adequate to meet the demands of the users in the United States. Deposits of barite are known in California, Idaho, Nevada, and Alaska, but most of them are undeveloped because there is, apparently, no market for the material in that region. The domestic production is derived from Missouri .and the Appalachian States, the greater part being obtained from Missouri. Following the outbreak of war in Europe many users of foreign barite in the United States have been forced to seek their supplies at home. It seems opportune at this time, therefore, that a general review be given of the barite industry in the Appalachian States, one of the two areas from which the domestic supply of the mineral is derived, and that attention be directed to the undeveloped deposits in the region. Briefly, then, this paper reviews the barite industry in the Appalachian States, and describes the occurrence, preparation, and uses of the mineral. General Character Barite, known commercially as barytes or heavy spar, is barium sulphate (Baso4), containing when pure BaO, 65.7 per cent., and S03, 34.3 per cent. IN selecting the subject, "Acceleration of the Rate of Corrosion by High Constant Stresses," for the 1940 Institute of Metals Division Lec-ture, I have been influenced by its highly theoretical and speculative nature as well as by the great practical importance of the correct inter-pretation and appraisal of the engineering significance of the phenomenon. I lay no claim to originality in talking on this topic, since it has been the subject of discussion for over a quarter of a century. However, as our technical thinking advances, old phenomena take on new and more significant aspects. In our studies at the Aluminum Research Labora-tories, we have encountered many perplexing and seemingly contradictory results and have been fascinated by the problem of dovetailing all of the many pieces of information to make a complete picture. I hope that in the brief period of this lecture I may share with you some of the enjoy-ment we have had in attempting to meet this challenge to metallur-gical science. The emphasis generally has been placed on the spontaneous failure by cracking of a metal under the combined action of high stress and corrosion, hence the present-day use of the terms "stress corrosion" or "stress corrosion cracking." The older term "season cracking," applied more specifically to copper-base alloys, includes, by inference, the element of time. For the purpose of the discussion today I will use "stress corro-sion" to cover broadly the effect of stress in accelerating the rate of corrosion of metals. To stay within the limits of allotted time the dis-cussion will cover the effect of high static stresses rather than repeated or dynamic stresses, which would take us into the related field of corro-sion-fatigue. The subject is particularly appropriate for an Institute of Metals Division Lecture because much the same phenomenon has been observed in almost all metal systems. THE Salt Creek oil field in Natrona County, Wyo., is the largest pool that has been found in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the largest in the United States. Many features of its production records are of peculiar interest, because of the unusual slowness with which it has been developed. This paper is published by the permission of the Midwest Refining Co., whose records have been freely drawn upon. Many mem¬bers of the Midwest organization have assisted in the collection of the material, but Messrs. F. E. Wood and L. E. Smith have been particularly helpful. The Salt Creek oil field is situated on a great dome with a closure of about 1500 ft., which rises at the northern end of a long anticline extending north-northwest by south-southeast for fully 25 miles. The productive area includes parts of townships 39 and 40 north and ranges 78 and 79 west of the sixth principal meridian. The Teapot oil field occupies a minor dome at about the center of the same anticline and adjoins the Salt Creek oil field on the southeast. The Teapot Naval Reserve includes the Teapot Dome and about 760 acres of the Salt Creek dome. In this paper, the Salt Creek oil field will be considered as' including all of the dome, except that part which lies within the Teapot Naval Reserve and the area west of the dome where oil is produced from shale crevices.

It has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are comminuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1.t The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chemical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the corrected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Continuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. Similar results had previously been obtained by Farren and Taylor2 and Hort3 and more or less simultaneously with the author's work by Rosenhain and Stott4 and by Taylor and Quinney9 The results obtained by the different investigators were not satisfactorily consistent, but the experiments of Taylor and Quinney constitute by far the best figures obtained to date. GRAVITATIONAL measurements made by means of the Eötvös torsion balance over any area enable a representation to be obtained of the total gravitational effects over the surface of that area arising from the combination of all sources of gravitational disturbance. The investigation of gravitational anomalies occurring in the upper layers of the earth's crust, in this way, has been attended with considerable success, and, especially in areas in which no undesirable disturbing factors were present, it has been possible to locate geological structures and mineral deposits with remarkable accuracy and also to delineate their confines and to indicate their depth below the surface with a certain amount of precision. Before this can be done successfully, however, it is necessary to determine the gravitational effect arising from all other extraneous .anomalies in order that these may be satisfactorily eliminated. Disturbing features giving rise to these gravitational anomalies may be divided into two classes, according to whether they are situated at or below the surface. The former are determined readily by a detailed leveling of the ground surface, and may be satisfactorily eliminated provided the specific gravity of the terrain material is known, but the latter are generally unknown, and can only be ascertained with difficulty. When, therefore, the observations obtained by means of the Eötvös torsion balance have been corrected for all surface irregularities, known as terrain and topographical effects, there remain residual gravitational values which are due entirely to subterranean conditions. The task of interpreting these results consists in disentangling the various subsurface anomalies, and subsequently in computing and recombining the effects of these various masses in order to verify the interpretation. When the gravitational anomalies are due to large and comparatively simple structures it is a matter of little difficulty to arrive at a satisfactory interpretation of the subterranean conditions, but in more complex areas, where the geological conditions are more complicated and several irregular features exist, the process of disentangling the various constituents of the complex mass arrangement is more difficult and requires the expenditure of considerable time and labor.

OF the many categories into which scientific knowledge has been arbitrarily 'divided, the one that has proved most. applicable in our attempts to gain an insight into the details of steelmaking processes is physical chemistry. To the young metallurgist who has only recently survived a college course in this subject, the application of its principles to reactions in liquid steel should not be difficult. The many excellent textbooks of physical chemistry provide ample material on the principles of this subject for the student of steelmaking processes. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide a concise review of the principles of physical chemistry that have proved useful in studies of steelmaking and at the same time to present some of the data that are essential to the application of physical chemistry to reactions at high temperatures. Certain parts of physical chemistry require rather formidable mathematics for their complete development, but in the main those applications in which we are here interested can be expressed in fairly simple terms. Many of the equations are logarithmic, and we shall use the symbols In X and log X to represent, respectively the natural and the common logarithm of X. The two are related-by In X = 2.303 log X. Logarithms may, be read from a good slide rule with sufficient accuracy for our purposes. In a few spots a knowledge of the calculus will be helpful. MATTER Innumerable forms of matter may, be recognized, and these may be converted by chemical processes into others, as ore, coke, and air are converted into iron, slag, and gas.. Whenever such a change occurs there is a corresponding change in the amount of energy associated with the matter. The process may require an input of energy, as in the electrolytic production of aluminum, or it may result in an output of energy, as in the combustion of fuel. The basic laws of the conservation of matter and of energy tell us that we cannot change the total amount of matter or the total amour t of energy.. Noranda's Grey Eagle mine and mill, in the Siskiyou Mountains of northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mineralogy, milling, and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

BASIC open-hearth slags have no obviously unique features when compared with slags from other metallurgical operations. Open-hearth slags form and exist at temperatures ranging from 2500 to 3100 F (1370 to 1700 C). In the course of an open-hearth heat, the liquid slag changes slowly and continuously in chemical analysis-the changes reflecting changes in temperature, changes in metal analysis, solution of charged materials, solution of feed additions, and solution of refractories. Through- out the process, the slag performs specific primary functions that are responsible for a large measure of the technical and economic importance of basic open-hearth steelmaking. It is intended in this chapter to present the chemical reactions by which the primary functions of basic open-hearth slags are carried out, to describe the physical and chemical principles governing the extent to which these reactions proceed and can be regulated, and finally to indicate the limitations imposed on other features of the process by the fulfillment of the primary functions. Basic open-hearth slags perform three primary functions. First and foremost, the slag provides a means of removing phosphorus from the liquid metal. The ability to remove phosphorus is largely responsible for the widespread use of the basic open- hearth process. Second, the slag serves as a controlling factor in transferring the oxygen required for the other oxidizing reactions. Third, the slag provides a means of eliminating some sulfur from the open-hearth bath. While the extent of sulfur removal is not comparable to that of phosphorus, the ability to remove some sulfur contributes much to the value of the process. The effectiveness with which the slag fulfills its functions varies with temperature and composition. Since operating temperatures are fixed largely by the specified nature of the product and the equipment, the speed and extent to which the functions of the slag are carried out depend largely on its composition. THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. Onoda Cement Co., Tsukumi is one of the largest limestone producer in Japan. From mines called Suisho and Ganji, it supplies limestone for cement plant, lime manufacture, iron and steel industries and for many purposes. The Suisho mine is highly productive, though it's operations are governed by the utmost regard for its impact on the surrounding environment. However, it became difficult to meet additional expanding demand and to assure continuity of high rate production. Present production rate 1s 6 million tons per year. The Ganji mine, some 2 km south west of the Suisho mine, began first-stage development In mid- 1973 and in january I976 started production. The capacity of major facilities is 9 million tons per year. Full production is predicted in 1979. Mining and milling methods of these mines under strict environmental considerations are discussed.

Henry Marion Howe, in whose memory we are gathered together, was one of the great thinkers who develop from time to time to whom is given the rare gift of synthesis. Analysis is given to few, but synthesis, the ability to show the relation of all parts to each other and thus to give a clear picture of the whole, is reserved for the very few. Analysis can be achieved by honesty, intelligence, and industry, but synthesis is only given to genius. Professor Howe's crowning achievement is the picture of the whole iron-carbon series shown in Fig. I, which places steel, malleable, gray iron, mottled and chilled irons in their proper relation to each other and shows the essential unity of the series. Perhaps his best statement of the case is found on page go of the Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron in these words: " Each member of the gray cast-iron series consists of the metallic matrix approximately equivalent to that member of the steel-white-cast-iron series to which it corresponds in percentage of combined carbon with its continuity broken up—by masses of graphite ..." Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro-structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor structural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. Elemental titanium has become famous as a space age metal, because of its high strength/ weight ratio and resistance to corrosion. However, the major use is in the form of titanium dioxide pigment, which because of its whiteness, high refractive index, and resulting light-scattering ability, is unequaled for whitening paints, paper, rubber, plastics, and other materials. A relatively minor use is in welding rod coatings, in the form of the mineral rutile. United States consumption of titanium dioxide in concentrates for these applications in 1982 was as follows: pigments, 630,000 st; titanium metal, 31,000 st; and welding rod coatings, 5,000 st. The only commercially important titanium ore minerals at the present time are ilmenite and its alteration products, and rutile. Titanium was discovered by Gregor in 1790, as a white oxide which he recovered from menaccanite, a variety of ilmenite occurring as a black sand near Falmouth, Cornwall. Barksdale (1966) stated that the fundamental chemical reactions on which the present day titanium industry is based were known before 1800, although it was not until 1918 that these pigments were available commercially on the American market. Pings (1972) outlined the early history of the titanium industry in the United States, referring to the work of Guise (1964) and others: Mining of titanium minerals in the United States began sometime between 1880 and 1900, in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Small quantities of rutile were also produced during that time in North Carolina and Georgia. In 1901 rutile was mined from a deposit near Roseland, VA, and was used in making titanium chemicals and for coloring ceramics. Ilmenite in the deposit was produced as a separate item in 1913, and rutile and ilmenite were obtained from this deposit through 1921. The mining of titanium bearing beach sands began in 1916 near Mineral City and Pablo Beach, FL, for the purpose of making titanium tetrachloride to be used in tracer bullets, flares, and smokescreens. The titanium pigment industry was founded in 1918. By 1928 a large part of the domestic production of rutile, ilmenite, and zircon came from Florida. However production ceased in 1929 in Florida with the mining of newly discovered deposits in Virginia which were mined until 1968. The discovery of new deposits in Florida, and the development of better mining and concentrating methods for low-grade sands, led to a return of activities in this area. The large deposits near Tahawus, NY. were brought into production in 1942 by National Lead Co. (now NL Industries, Inc.), and by 1949 this company was the leading producer of ilmenite in the world. In 1948 the extensive deposits of ilmenite and ilmenite-bearing iron ores were discovered in eastern Quebec. The large Trail Ridge sand deposit in Florida was discovered by E. Apparently he had taken considerable interest in this idea around the turn of the century, for he refers to a discussion at the Franklin Institute in I900 in which he said: "Though many others had probably conceived this relation between the steels and cast irons, it was here enunciated for the first time, so far as I know. It was received with great incredulity." The concept was explained in some detail in a paper on "The Constitution of Cast Iron" presented before the A.S.T.M. in 1902 when Professor Howe was retiring president of that young society. In the discussion Dr. Sauveur stated that he was "very well acquainted with Professor Howe's theory of the constitution of cast iron," and went on to say that while he "shared it to the fullest extent, some foundrymen . . . claim cast iron is a metal entirely different from steel . . . that steel and cast iron have very little in common, and that therefore the knowledge gained in the study of steel is of little or no value in the study of cast iron." Dr. Moldenke, in discussing the same paper, said he had been working on the same theory for 12 years but he laid no claim to publication. Discussing the difference in the micro-structure of the metallic matrix, Professor Howe pointed out that "such minor structural differences are indeed to be expected, because of the difference in the conditions under which these constituents are generated. "One difference in these conditions is that the steel of most micrographs has been either forged or at least treated thermally in such a way as to give a new structure radically different from that which formed during the initial solidification, whereas the cast irons have not. The construction of a new breaker at the Cranberry Colliery, Hazleton, Pa., was forced upon the operators, A. Pnrdee & Co., by a fire which destroyed the entire plant early in January, 1896. The loss included, in addition to the breaker, three boilerhouses and three engine-houses. The boilers were not injured, but the steam-pipes and connections were all broken and warped by the fire. The boilers were probably saved from injury by the presence of mind of the fireman., who started all his feed-pumps and filled the boilers with water. The hoisting-engines were more or less warped and cracked, but by patching and replacing the injured and broken parts, they were made to do satisfactory service in the new plant. It may be worthy of mention that the wrought-iron shaft of one of the hoisting-drums, 12 inches in diameter by 17 feet long, was so heated in the fire that the weight of the drum caused it

This paper contains an account of experimental results obtained in an extensive investigation of steels containing zirconium. There recently appeared' an announcement by F. M. Becket, at whose suggestion and under whose general direction this investigation was made, a statement of the outstanding features of the work and a brief explanation of the factors that led to its inception. It is not possible, in a paper of this character, to record all of the operating and test data collected, which includes the production of more than 350 heats of steel. The difficulty of a complete presentation is increased by the fact that several lines of experimentation are too incomplete to warrant publication of the results at the present time. In addition to the methods of manufacture and test employed in the work, there is described experimental evidence on which are based certain definite conclusions regarding the remarkable effects brought about by the presence in steel of relatively small percentages of zirconium. When added to a molten steel bath, zirconium combines chemically with dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, in the order named, and is capable of neutralizing the embrittling effect of phosphorus in whole or in part; although in the case of phosphorus there is no evidence so far of actual chemical combination. These effects arc not in the nature of suppositions supported by theory, nor is their existence deduced merely on the basis of analytical evidence. In each phase of its relation to or reaction with the four impurities mentioned, zirconium affects beneficiauy the mechanical properties of the steel to which it is added, in a manner which it is one of the purposes of this paper to explain in terms of a tentative working theory.
