p layers on n-type substrates of GaAs were prepared by difhsion of zinc into these substrates. Experimental details about the diffusion technique will be presented. It will be shown that inhomogeneity in the substrate doping level and crystal shucture defects cause nonplanarity in the junction plane. These nonplanarities give rise to high threshold current densities. From incremental sheet-conductivity measurements the zinc profile is derived. Data about surface concentration and gradient of the zinc concentration at the junction are presented. Finally, some results of laser diodes, which were made of wafers with extremely planar diffusion fronts, are discussed. ThE investigations reported here are part of a program concerned with the materials aspect in the fabrication of GaAs laser diodes. This includes studies of the influence of crystal defects introduced both during the growth of the crystal and as a consequence of subsequent diffusion. Compared with the progress made in the investigation of structure defects, for instance by X-ray microscopy in materials like silicon, no similar results are known so far for the case of GaAs. The further progress in laser diodes will depend very much upon our knowledge of these structure defects and subsequently upon our ability to avoid them. Laser diodes of GaAs had been made mostly by diffusing an acceptor impurity, normally zinc, into an n-type substrate. This procedure was found more convenient than the inverse one for various technical reasons. We will follow this line and restrict ourselves to zinc diffusion only in this paper. DIFFUSION TECHNIQUES AND EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL In order to set a refgrence for our experiments, we used a standard procedure for the diffusion runs. The diffusions were carried out in a sealed quartz tube for 2-1/2 hr at 850°C. One milligram zinc arsenide (ZnAsz) per cu cm of the tube volume served as zinc source. Under these conditions the junction depth was between 25 and 30 p. It is assumed, according to the investigations of the zinc arsenide system by V. Lyons and V. ilvestri,' that ZnAs2 dissociates completely at 850°C into ZnsAsz and Asg. Since there is a condensed phase of ZnsAs2 in the tube at 850°C, the partial pressure of zinc is controlled by the pressure of the arsenic formed by the dissociation of ZnAs2. Due to the fact that the zinc partial pressure resulting from the dissociation of ZnsAsz is only a weak function of the partial pressure of arsenic, the amount of the initial ZnAs2 is not very critical. Experimentally, we found that the junction depth, as well as the surface concentration, was practically the same, if the ingots of ZnAs2 varied between 0.2 and 5.0 mg per cu cm. The wafers were oriented with the main faces in (100). Surface damage due to cutting and lapping was removed by a chemical-etch treatment in a rotating beaker (etch solution: HzSOr, H202, and HzO in a ratio 3:l:l). The GaAs substrate material was n type and doped with tellurium, selenium, silicon, or germanium. It was grown by means of horizontal or Czochralski techniques. ABOUT five years ago the Bureau of Mines began a study, at Minneapolis, of the various methods for beneficiating the low-grade manganese deposits of the Cuyuna range. Several samples of green carbonate slate from the Cuyuna range, containing about 7 pct Mn and about 28 pct Fe, were obtained for this study. The component minerals in the carbonate slate formation were so intimately associated that mineral dressing methods were not suitable for concentrating manganese to a ferrograde product. Although upgrading of manganese and iron minerals has been effected by flotation methods, it appears that manganese cannot be separated from iron except by chemical means. Because the flotation studies at Minneapolis were carried out simultaneously with the hydrometallurgical studies, only crude slate was available for process testing. An important economic consideration in selecting any one of the several chemical methods proposed for recovering ferrograde manganese is the availability of the chemical reagent. Fortunately, large tonnages of sulfur are available on the Cuyuna range in low-grade pyrite and pyrrhotite deposits that are readily concentrated by flotation to a suitable feed for a sulfide roasting furnace as indicated by a Bureau of Mines investigation in 195 0-1951.1 The roasted residue from the sulfide concentrates is a potential source of marketable iron oxide. Therefore, if these sulfide deposits were employed in recovering manganese, utilization of two heretofore unused mineral deposits would be accomplished. Laboratory investigations of several proposed leaching processes were made as a preliminary step in the investigation of hydrometallurgical methods for the treatment of Cuyuna carbonate slate using sulfur as a chemical reagent. From results obtained in the laboratory tests, these leaching processes did not appear entirely suitable for treating Cuyuna carbonate slate. The method developed at the North Central Experiment Station and selected for a more intensive pilot-plant investigation has been termed the differential high-temperature sulfatizing process. Essentially, this sulfatizing process consists of the following steps, described in the order in which the small-scale pilot-plant investigations were made. The first and perhaps most significant step in the process consists of a sulfate roast. Carbonate slate is roasted in an atmosphere of sulfur dioxide gas and air. The overall chemical reaction for converting manganese carbonate to a sulfate at a high temperature in a sulfur dioxide atmosphere follows MnCO8 + SO2 + 1/2 0, = MnSO4 + CO2 (H077°O = —64,180 cal per g mol) .' The need for concentrated sulfuric acid is avoided. Fine grinding is not essential. Removal of carbon dioxide from the slate during roasting produces a more porous structure and permits easier permeation by the sulfatizing gas mixture. The temperature limits for this conversion of manganese have been established as 600" and 850°C. Iron sulfate is unstable and is not formed at these temperatures; phosphorus is not converted to a water-soluble form; and polythionates are not formed. The second step in the process consists simply of a water leach of the sulfatized product. Manganese sulfate in the sulfatized product is dissolved in water. Iron, phosphorus, and calcium remain in the leach residue as water-insoluble products. The third and final step consists of the recovery of ferrograde manganese oxide from manganese sulfate leach solution. Water is evaporated from the leach solution, and impure monohydrate crystals of manganese sulfate are recovered. THE pole figure interpretation in a recent paper' on the torsion texture of copper was questioned in discussion,2 nd a simpler alternative interpretation was proposed. In the hope of reaching a positive decision in favor of one or the other, further studies were undertaken with 70-30 brass and Armco iron. This additional work has not answered all the questions about torsion textures, but the new pole figures do offer support for the original interpretation and show that the texture is more complicated than the alternative suggests. From the previous paper,' the appropriate method of describing the texture in a twisted bar is known to be a pole figure plotted on a plane tangent to the surface of the bar. The axes of the pole figure are chosen to coincide with directions in the tangent plane which are parallel and at right angles to the bar axis (the longitudinal direction, L.D., and the transverse direction, T.D.), for these directions define symmetry axes of the texture. Therefore any ideal orientation that might be selected to represent the texture gives the crystallographic plane parallel to the tangent plane and the crystallographic direction parallel to the axis of the torsion specimen. A unique texture was assumed in the original interpretation, and the four ideal orientations, (112) [111], (111) [112], (110) [001], and (112) [131], were used in its description. Of the four orientations, the first three provide possible slip directions along the direction labeled T.D. in the pole figure, which is one of maximum shear stress in a specimen being twisted. The alternative, however, simply considered the texture to be made up of two components, one a [Ill] alignment along the specimen axis with a random orientation about the axis as in the wire texture, and the other a superimposed orientation (110) [0011. Experimental evidence for this simpler interpretation was derived from two observations: 1—twisting did not alter the orientation of a single-crystal torsion specimen of a brass in which an octahedral plane was perpendicular (and a [Ill] direction parallel) to the axis, and 2—deformation bands with approximately the (110) [001] orientation were seen to develop in the crystal during the test. The new pole figures were obtained with a brass and an iron torsion specimen of 3/4 and 1 in. gage length diameter, respectively. After annealing, polishing, and twisting, seven rods, about 0.030 in. in diameter and with different orientations, were prepared from material near the surface of each specimen; these were required for the method of constructing pole figures by using a Geiger counter as developed by Norton.5 Since the shear strain gradient in plastic torsion is linear, it was readily computed that the material supplying the brass rods had been subjected to a shear strain of about 3.2, and that supplying the iron rods had received a shear strain of about 2. All details concerning specimen design, testing procedure, rod preparation, and use of the Norton technique can be found in ref. 1. Only this procedure was followed in working out the (111) and (100) pole figures for brass, Figs. 1 and 2. However, X-ray photograms were also involved in the construction of the (110) pole figure for Armco iron, Fig. 3. The photograms were made according to the conventional transmission diffraction technique using a small sheet taken parallel to the specimen surface and etched to a thickness of about 0.0025 in. PRACTICAL designs for good "home made" molybdenum furnaces are hard to find in the literature. The one described briefly below left something to be desired but was good enough to operate as a rather long (30 in.) two-zone furnace for periods of over 2 months at temperature (1400° to 1600°C) without shutdown. The principal problem in our application was to establish a temperature profile with two distinct constant-temperature zones and no dip between the zones. This and other problems mentioned below would not arise, however, if both zones were operated at the same temperature and if a shorter furnace were acceptable. Since molybdenum windings oxidize very rapidly when heated in air, impervious refractory tubes were used for both the furnace core and the outer jacket tube shown in the accompanying figures. A protective atmosphere of forming gas (10 pct H2, 90 pct N2) was continuously passed through the gas-tight annular volume between the core and outer jacket. The water-cooled copper ends shown in Figs. 1 to 3 sealed the ends of the tubes. Annealed molybdenum wire (40 mil) was wound on the recrys-tallized alumina core (35.5 mm OD by 28.5 mm ID by 30 in.) at a spacing of 0.36 in. The spacing was reduced to 0.29 in. close to the ends to partially compensate for end heat losses. Fig. 2 shows two molybdenum-ground lead taps off the center of the winding to produce the two independect temperature zones. The ground lead was insulated with 1/4-in. alumina tubing and connected to the grounded copper end by passing the wires through the gas port tube and crimping each wire into notches cut at the mouth. To prevent sagging of the core at high temperatures, refractory "troughs" were cut from alumina and mullite tubing to cradle the core. The support "troughs" which were 6 in. long and located about 5 in. from each end of the annular volume also served as radiation shields. In view of the different expansion coefficients and operating temperatures of the core and outer jacket (3.5 in. OD by 3 in. ID by 30 in.), the ends of the tubes were smoothed and squared to produce good sealing surfaces, and the core was ground 1/32 in. shorter than the outer tube. The power terminals were passed through their respective conductor ports which were internally lined with alumina tubing and sealed with Armstrong adhesive A-6 leaving about 1 in. of protruding lead wire for external connections. (Adhesive A-6 is a two-component system consisting of an epoxy-type resin with a mineral fibrous filler and an amine catalyst.) Figs. 1 and 3 show the entire assembly of concentric refractory tubes, copper ends, and sealing o rings, held together with two brass flanges and 3/8-in. bolts with heavy springs for dimensional flexibility. The furnace shell (19 by 19 by 30 in.) consisted of a steel frame with sheets of transite forming a box. The copper ends protruded through two 3.75-in. circular holes cut at the center of each transite square end. Thermal insulation next to the transite exterior was effected by K-23 B&W bricks alld in a central volume of approximately 9 by 9 by 30 in. a row of K-30 bricks was lined up to support the hot assembly. THE migration of carbon in austenite under the influence of an electric current has been observed qualitatively several times.14 Lebedev and Guterman5 recently have reported quantitative measurements; their method consisted of welding a low-carbon to a high-carbon wire, passing current, and later estimating the carbon distribution metal-lographically. We believe the method reported in this paper is superior in principle since electrolytic migration and ordinary diffusion are not necessarily coupled as in the weld method; also for the first time the extent of migration is determined by combustion analysis for carbon. A uniform tubular specimen (S.A.E. 1045 or 1095) was mounted as illustrated in the figures. the whole assembly being in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. Direct current (129 to 226 amp at 0.65 to 1.0 v) served as source both of heat and of potential gradient for carbon migration. The duration of experiment was 7.5 to 12 hr, during which time the temperature was controlled (±10°C) manually. The experimental conditions are indicated in the first five columns of table I. With this experimental arrangement, the temperature initially has a maximum value at the central plane. Also, in this vicinity (by virtue of the symmetry), the carbon entering any volume element is equal in quantity to that leaving; the loss or accumulation of carbon occurs near the electrodes since the carbon moves uniformly near the center and is "frozen" at the cold ends. Hence, providing the time of experiment is not sufficiently long to seriously influence the conditions at the central plane, carbon crosses this plane only under the influence of the electrical potential gradient and not under the influence of temperature or concentration gradient. The amount of carbon which has crossed this plane was determined by combustion analysis of the two halves of the specimen. The results of these analyses are shown in the sixth and seventh columns of table I. It will be noted that substantial amounts of carbon migrated from the anode portion to the cathode portion (except at 920°C, which temperature was too low to exhibit the effect in the allotted time). In spite of precau-tions taken, considerable decarburization occurred as may be seen by comparing cols. 8 and 5. In three cases (indicated by asterisks in table I) the specimen was ground on one side, polished, and examined metallographically before analysis. One specimen was normalized and re-examined. Micrographs of selected areas in specimens 4 and 6 are shown in figs. 1 and 2, respectively. Evidence of carbon migration from the anode toward the cathode is quite apparent. Fig. 2 shows abundant graphite as well as cementite in a region near the cathode. The temperature of this zone is estimated at about 800°C. In fig. 1, particularly in the micrograph on the extreme right (the right side of which is of unaltered carbon content), there is evidence of slight depletion of carbon in the immediate vicinity of the cathode as contrasted to the general increase in carbon of the cathode half of the specimen. Although this may be attributed in part to decarbur-ization, it is believed that it is occasioned also by thermal diffusion—migration (of carbon) from a cool to a hot zone4—a phenomenon superimposed upon the electrical migration. The ore of the Southeast Missouri lead district consists essentially of galena in dolomitic limestone. The galena usually is in a very finely disseminated condition. The experience of recent years in the concentrating plants of the St. Joseph Lead Co. has shown that dry crushing carried to a point where about 90 per cent of the ore passes a 14-mesh screen liberates the larger portion of the galena, and minimizes further necessary reduction in rod or ball mills. Concentration practice has attempted to carry size reduction to a point where economic unlocking of the galena is obtained, without causing undue sliming of the very friable galena. While 60 per cent of the tonnage of the district is treated by the flotation process, only 40 per cent of the total concentrates is produced by that means, as efforts have always been made to keep the grade and tonnage of flotation feed as low as possible. The milling practice of the district for some years has recognized the generally accepted idea of better selective grinding in rod mills as compared with ball mills, with the attendant decrease in production of fines. The function of rod and ball mills in the various concentrating plants is the grinding of table middlings and coarse tailings that carry lead values too high to be discarded. The simplified flowsheet in Fig. I illustrates the place of grinding mills in the circuit. The arrangement of classi- fiers, tables and mills constitutes a closed circuit within somewhat flexible limits. In 1937 experiments were conducted in replacing the ball charge in a 6 by 4-ft. ball mill with rods 2 in. in diameter and 51 in. long. This step was taken with some hesitancy, as it was easy to picture a mass of tangled and crossed rods. However, no difficulties developed, and after a short trial period, six more ball mills were converted to rod mills. These mills are of the spur gear and pinion, belt-driven type, using in most cases a 75-hp. motor and having a 9½-in. open trunnion discharge. As ball mills, they carried a charge of 16,000 to 20,000 lb. of balls, 2 in. in original size. The feed to the mills was dewatered by dewatering wheels and introduced at 70 to 75 per cent solids, with a single scoop feeder. One change in mill design was found advisable when rods were introduced. The existing end liners had an outward flare of 3½ in. in 12 in. These were replaced by linings having vertical interior faces, in order to prevent undue end travel of the rods. This change gave an effective working length of 52¾ in. inside the mill. No alterations were made in the shell liners, which are of the smooth type, made of manganese steel 2 in. in original thickness. The rods at present in use are 51 in. long and 1¾ in. in diameter. The composition has been varied at times; at present they contain 0.70 per cent carbon and 0.70 per cent manganese. Some breakage and etching occurs as the rods become small, but this is considered preferable to using softer rods, which may kink and cause tangling of the charge. The mill charges

In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

[ ] For President-Elect Leo F. Reinartz has been nominated for the Presidency of AIME in 1954. Mr. Reinartz is now vice-president, special operating development, Armco Steel Corp. He was born in East Liverpool, Ohio, and graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology as metallurgical engineer. He joined Armco in 1909 as a chemist and then became open hearth foreman; assistant superintendent, open hearth dept.; superintendent, open hearth dept.; assistant general superintendent; works manager, East works; manager, Middletown div.; and assistant vice-president, successively. Mr. Reinartz has been active in many technical societies and delivered papers before several. He has been the recipient of the Alumni Award from Carnegie and holds life honorary membership in the AIME National Open Hearth Conference. One of the organizers of the National Open Hearth Conference, Mr. Reinartz was Chairman, Executive Committee (1927 to 1946) and is presently Chairman of its Finance Committee. In October 1951 he was an American Conferee at the First World Metallurgical Congress held in Detroit. An AIME member since 1925, Mr. Reinartz has been active on numerous committees of the Institute.

In September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, our President, in the Geology of Canada, 1863, p. 738, in the follow ing terms: " The general diffusion of nickel throughout the magnesian rocks of the Quebec group has been already noticed. It has, however, never been met with in any considerable quantities in these rocks, although workable deposits of its ores may reasonably be looked for

Free World consumption of diamonds of all types closely follows the fluctuations of the business cycles in the large industrialized countries, particularly the U.S. Sustained purchasing by this country for stockpiling purposes has been a major factor in Free World demand for crushing bort and industrial diamonds, and it has been for this reason that investments in larger plants have been made by all major diamond mining companies during the past few years. For the purposes of this study, the diamonds produced in the Congo and elsewhere in the Free World are divided into three types:

John R. Lucas was born Apr. 15, 1866, at St. Louis, Mo. From his 19th year until his death on his 51st birthday anniversary, he was engaged in the mining industry, in which, however, he made his beginning and achieved his progress after a somewhat unusual fashion. Presumably without previous training as a mining engineer, he became in April, 1885, and remained until the end of 1892, bookkeeper of the Granite Metal Mining Co. at its St. Louis office. Then for a year he served as bookkeeper of the same company at its mine in Montana. This official of a mining company is at the very heart of its operations; and if he possesses ambition and intelligence, may learn the business thoroughly. It is not surprising, therefore, that Mr. Lucas, being that kind of man, assumed, in 1894, a position with the Hope Mining Co., another St. Louis corporation operating in Montana, which he retained for eight years, serving not only in the office, but becoming also successively mill foreman and assayer. This varied practical experience prepared him for important administrative functions. From April, 1902, he was for many years the business agent of the Goodhope Mining Co. In 1903, he became also the assistant superintendent of the Granite Bi-metallic Consolidated Mining Co., and subsequently its superintendent-a position which he retained until his health failed at the end of 1916. In addition to the other Granite Bi-metallic properties, he had charge of the sapphire mines in the west fork of Rock Creek, Mont., the Basin Gulch placer mines, the claims of the former Hope Co., etc., all of which he managed with skill, integrity and recognized business ability.

THE over-all picture of safety in mining has been encouraging during the past few years, and in mining activities as a whole the trend in accident occurrence is downward. This is the more noteworthy when the type of labor used in mines during the war period is taken into consideration. The drafting of young mining employees into the armed services and the departure of others for work in other war industries took a heavy toll of young, husky, active men. Their places were taken in large part by older men who returned to the mines, or by inexperienced men with little if any knowledge of mining. Despite the lack of labor and especially of skilled labor, and the difficulty of obtaining new equipment as well as maintaining and replacing worn or broken equipment, and numerous other difficulties the mining industry not only reached and maintained maximum production but made the increase with little if any sacrifice of safety. In fact, in many instances better safety records were. established than in normal

Shoveling ore cost so much at Tyrone during the year 1917 that it was deemed advisable to conduct tests to see where the fault lay. These tests were in the nature of time studies and extended over a period of very nearly a year. No data were available on this work to supply a starting point, so it was necessary to begin in a very elementary way, to find out the capacity of the average Mexican laborer. To' obtain a basis for comparison, it was necessary to determine the capacity of various types and sizes of shovels, so as to know whether the 21-1b. (9.5-kg.) load was the best load underground as well as on surface. A list of essential factors influencing shoveling was also made out during the course of a short series of preliminary time studies, and the motions involved in shoveling were analyzed and subdivided for convenience in studying. The necessary forms and record sheets were also decided upon at this time. A second short series of tests was then conducted on the surface, so as to be able to estimate the negative effects of underground work on the shovelers, and to minimize, as far as possible, the need for studying obviously poor types and sizes of shovels under the difficult conditions to be encountered in the mine. The test work underground consumed by far the greater proportion of the time and was divided into three series: Shoveling directly into a chute; shoveling into a wheelbarrow and tramming to a chute; and shoveling into a car and tramming to a chute. In each series the following points were determined for various lengths of time worked: Number of shovelfuls handled per minute, effect of distance thrown on shoveling speed, amount of rest required, amount of time consumed in tramming and dumping, proportion of working day occupied in shoveling, total tonnage handled during various working periods, effect of distance on tonnage handled during the day.

We have received from L. S. Cates, the following translation, by S. W. Mudd, of early mining methods in India: In Herodotus one finds a description how Darius by aid of his good horse and his good groom Oebares got himself the Kingdom of the Per-sians. He then set up in Persia twenty satrapies assigning to each a governor and fixing the tribute which was to be paid to him by the several nations. The following description of the method of getting the gold demanded of the Indians as tribute is copied directly from Book III Thalia, paragraphs 94 to 105 omitting the diversions of Herodotus which in one case consisted of a lapse of two pages following a semicolon before the author returned to the subject. The Indians, who are more numerous than any other nation with which we are acquainted paid a tribute exceeding that off every other people, to wit, three hundred and sixty talents of gold-dust. The way in which the Indians get the plentiful supply of gold, which enables then to furnish year by year so vast an amount of gold-dust to the King, is the following: Eastward of India lies a tract which is entirely sand. Here, in this desert, there live amid the sand great ants, in size somewhat less than clogs, but bigger than foxes. The Persian king has a number of them, which have been caught by the hunters in the land whereof we are speaking. These ants make their dwellings under ground, and like the Greek ants, which they very much resemble in shape, throw up sand-heaps as they burrow. Now the sand which they throw up is full of gold. The Indians, when they go into the desert to collect this sand, take three camels and harness them together, a female in the middle and a male on either side, in a leading-rein. The rider sits on the female, and they are particular to choose for the purpose one that has just dropped . her young; for their female camels can run as fast as horses, while they bear burdens very much better.

THE present note is intended as an addition to my previous communication on the volumetric determination of manganese, read at the Roanoke meeting," it having been suggested that the circumstances under which my experiments had been conducted, were essentially different from those met with in the analysis of irons. The method used in these experiments is the same in all its details as that described in the paper referred to. I have made seven experiments in all: two of these were in duplicate on half a gramme of a sample of spiegel dissolved in hydrochloric acid; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 25 C.C. of a standard solution of potassium permanganate; one was on the same amount of spiegel with the addition of 35 C.C. permanganate and much organic matter, viz., one drop of castor-oil, two or three drops of coal-tar benzol arid of gasolene (petroleum), about ten of alcohol, portions of starch and of sugar about the size of a small pea, and about half an inch of a common match cut into shavings. This organic matter was added to the manganese solution after the hydrochloric acid had been replaced by nitric, and the solution was heated until the wood-shavings had disappeared. The fifth experiment was made by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel alone in nitric acid; the sixth by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in nitric acid with the addition of 25 C.C. potassium permanganate, some oxalic acid, half an inch of a match, one filter-paper 7 cm. in diameter, and two drops each of castor-oil and turpentine; and the seventh experiment by dissolving half a gramme of spiegel in hydrochloric acid and adding 35 C.C. permanganate, without however taking the precaution to evaporate off all the excess of hydrochloric acid. Under these circumstances, one would expect that if organic matter exercises any influence on the determination, it would be plainly evident in the results obtained. PRODUCERS of building stone have had to seek new and attractive uses for their output to supplement the diminished orders for standard products. Lunar is the direct result of the need of new outlets for marble and is. probably the most ingenious and attractive type to reach the market in a quarter of a century. It is a highly translucent stone which retains the same glistening sparkle in transmitted light that marble exhibits by incident rays. This sparkle sets it apart entirely from translucencies made of glass or even onyx, alabaster, and the distinctive exceedingly fine textured calcite marbles produced in Alabama and quarried formerly in northern Vermont and Quebec.

For anyone contemplating flotation research with only a very limited amount of mineral available for testing, the choice of suitable experimental equipment is by no means obvious. Hallimond's original and delightfully simple cell1 has been modified by subsequent investigators2to give quantitative and reproducible results on small samples. However, the modifications have necessarily compromised its simplicity, and the services of a skilled glass blower are required to duplicate the cell. Vacuum flotation tests3 at best qualitative and may, under certain conditions4, be quite impracticable. A hundred years ago, Thoreau observed that "our life is frittered away by detail," and his advice was to "simplify, simplify," The success of the simple cell described below, which was developed by the author and differs somewhat from Hallimond's original, suggests that Thoreau's advice still has merit a century later. CELL CONSTRUCTION The cell [Fig. 1 (a) and 1 (b)] consists essentially of a 25-ml pipet from which has been cut the con- stricted top. The length cut off is not critical since this merely determines the final volume of the cell. Cell volume may be varied in this way from 20 to 50 cc. A pyrex extension tube, equal in diameter and approximately half the length of the cut pipet, is attached to the top of the pipet by means of 2 ½ in. of close-fitting tygon tubing. When assembled, the two pyrex tubes should be spaced about ½ in. apart. Another length of tygon tubing is added to the extension piece for sealing purposes. A ¾ -in. disc of porous material (teflon cloth is ideal), secured in place over the pipet tip with another piece of shaped tygon tubing, completes the cell assembly. Tygon tubing may be shaped by pushing it over the pipet tip or some similar form and heating carefully over a low flame. For flotation [Fig. 1 (c) 1, the pyrex extension tube is rotated approximately 70º from the vertical and held in position by a wire hook and eye. Floated material, after reaching the free surface, falls and rests on this inclined plane. The barrier formed by the bent tygon tubing ensures that floated material does not slide back and return to the vertical portion of the cell.
