Abstract-North Carolina is the leading state in the US in lithium mineral production. Spodumene is mined in open Pits and concentrated by flotation by the two companies, Lithium Corp. of America and Foote Mineral Co. North Carolina State University has a mineral research laboratory in Asheville, N. C., with trained personnel, batch and pilot plant facilities to assist in the state's mineral development. The NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory assisted both lithium-producing companies with spodumene concentration problems and has lately worked closely with Lithium Corp. of America to develop the best flowsheet for spodumene and byproduct recovery. The concentration of North Carolina spodumene and byproducts from pegmatites is presented and illustrated with figures.

In the past few years several articles and papers presenting results of solution gas-drive depletion calculations have appeared in the lit-erature. Such calculations are of interest to the oil industry, for investment decisions must often be made before much is known about a reservoir. At other times, an estimate of the possible benefits to be realized from alternate production methods is desirable, and theoretical depletion calculations can serve as a floor or reference level from which to work. In any case, an estimate of ultimate oil recovery based upon engineering data is commonly required. An engineer confronted with the problem of obtaining, for a specific reservoir system, an estimate of ultimate oil recovery by solution gas-drive depletion usually will be forced to perform the calculations himself. This is despite the quantity of data in the literature. Rarely will either experience or the literature provide results from a reservoir system similar in all important respects to the one under consideration, and calculated results are not so plentiful that satisfactory interpolation procedures can be devised. Performing the calculations, however, is a tedious, time-consuming task unless an electronic computer is available, and, in practice, time and manpower are not always available for this purpose. A quick, simple, consistent method was needed for reducing the uncer- tainty in estimated oil recovery from solution gas-drive reservoirs when only minimum information about the reservoir system is available. PROCEDURE Method of Calculation The usual requisite assumptions were made so that the material balance equation could be used to calculate data for the charts. The following assumptions were made: (1) the reservoir is homogeneous and isotropic; (2) oil recovery is due entirely to solution gas drive and neither a gas cap nor a water drive nor gravity drainage is present; (3) the initial reservoir pressure is the bubble-point pressure of the reservoir fluid; (4) initial total liquid saturation is 100 per cent of pore space; (5) interstitial water saturation remains at the initial value as the reservoir pressure declines from the bubble-point pressure to atmospheric pressure; (6) equilibrium gas saturation is 5 per cent of pore space; and (7) oil and gas saturations are uniformly distributed throughout the reservoir at all times. There are no saturation gradients due to a wellbore, nor is the geometry of the reservoir system considered. The material balance equation was written in the form of a differential equation' which was integrated to determine the change in oil saturation for an assigned pressure drop. Formal integration was not possible, so recourse was made to the Runge-Kutta method' of numerical integration. All computations were performed on IBM equipment. Numerical integration yielded the change in oil saturation within the reservoir as the pressure. declined from the bubble-point pressure to atmospheric pressure. The initial oil saturation minus the change in oil saturation yielded the oil saturation at atmospheric pressure. The oil originally in place was obtained by dividing the initial oil saturation by the initial formation volume factor (differential liberation) while the oil in place at atmospheric pressure was obtained by dividing the final oil saturation by the formation volume factor at atmospheric pressure. U1timate oil recovery, expressed as a percentage of the initial oil in place, was obtained by dividing the difference between the oil initially in place and the oil in place at atmospheric pressure by the oil initially in place and multiplying by 100. PVT Data Charts were based upon 135 solutions to the material balance equation. PVT properties of the reservoir fluids were variables in this equation and had to be known as functions of pressure. The required PVT data might have been obtained from either actual reservoir fluid systems or correlated data. However, correlated PVT data were developed and employed in the calculations for the following reasons: (1) it is doubtful that 135 sets of PVT data could have been obtained for the values of variables investigated in this study, and (2) results of recovery calculations from randomly obtained PVT data could not be correlated as well as rssults from selected PVT data. The phase structure and aging characteristics of two nickel-base alloys, Inconel 718 and 702, were investigated. Wrought and cast Inconel 718 showed ArisCb as the major hardening phase, as well as ture was positively identified. Inconel 702 had Ni3Al as the major hardening phase, as well as Cr7C3-of the phase amounts with temperature was determined. 1 HE value of phase structure and aging rate information in the utilization of alloys has been well established. As part of a continuing program, the results obtained on two nickel-base alloys, hconel 718 and Inconel 702, are presented here. Inconel 718 is a relatively new alloy considered for application in both sheet and cast form. Its novelty lies in the use of high columbium tantalum levels in a Ni-Cr-Fe base. No previous work on this type of alloy has been reported in the literature. Inconel 702 is being used now as an oxidation-resistant sheet alloy. Occasional fabrication problems spurred work on its basic structural behavior. The composition of 702 is essentially nichrome plus aluminum and titanium for strengthening and added oxidation resistance. This puts it in the basic class of other nickel-base alloys which have already been studied. The two alloys will be treated separately. INCONEL 718 Phase Study Methods. The phases present after the various conditions investigated were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis of two different elec-trolytically extracted residues and microscopic examination. The extraction methods, using 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3PO, in water and the X-ray technique have been described previously.' The effect of temperature on the phase behavior was studied on sheet material using the following heat treatments: 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1300 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1400°, 100 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1500°F, 100 hr, water quench 2250o 2 hr, ice brine quench 1700°F, 48 hr, water quench 2250°F, 2 hr, ice brine quench 1850°, 24 hr, water quench 2250°, 2 hr, ice brine quench 2000°F, 6 hr, water quench The high solution temperature was an attempt to dissolve as many phases as possible without causing melting. Aging exposures were made longer than normal heat treating times in order to approach equilibrium conditions more closely. Cast material was examined only in the as-cast condition and with the normal heat treatment (1700°F, 1 hr, air cool 1325oF, 16 hr,air cool). Materials. The full phase study was performed on sheet specimens approximately 1/2 in. by 2 in. by 1/16 in. The cast pieces were cut from the gating system of a vacuum-cast test piece. An all weld-metal specimen was made by running many weld beads on the sheet using filler made from the sheared edges of the sheet. All external contamination was removed by belt-sanding followed by an electro-polishing treatment. The typical composition of wrought Inco 718 is as follows: The alloy is air-melted. Cast hco 718 may have higher molybdenum. The performance of a water-drive reservoir having a gas cap depends primarily on the movement of the gar-oil and oil-water contacts. The movement of the contacts during production depends in turn on fluid withdrawals and how the reservoir pressure changes as fluids are produced from the reservoir; that is, on how effectively the aquifer maintains pressure by replacing withdrawals. inasmuch as pressure changes, fluid withdrawals, contact positions, and produced gas-oil and oil-water ratios are interdependent, the analysis and prediction of the performance of a reservoir produced in a given way must take into account this interdependence throughout depletion. This paper presents an analysis which, within the limitations of the assumptions made, yields an engineering approach to predicting future performance based on reservoir pressure and production history. The most significant assumption is the method of extrapolation of future gas-oil and water-oil ratios. The extrapolation procedure smoothly increases both ratios to preselected values as the remaining oil column undergoes a specified decrease in thickness. This preselection is made on the busis of previous field experience in depletion of similar reservoirs under similar conditions. For computing future performance a vdumebic balance L combined with the differential equation defining pressure distribution in the aquifer to obtain positions of water-oil and gas-oil contacts. From these positions are extrapolated produced water-oil and gas-oil ratios. Reservoir performance can be investigated when oil production rates are dependent upon various factors including the performance of the reservoir itself. Examples of practical application of the procedure are included. INTRODUCTION To predict performance of water-drive reservoirs with gas caps and thin oil columns, it is necessary to describe the motions of the fluids within the reservoir during the entire production period to depletion. These motions depend on the pressure changes and on the withdrawal of oil, gas and water. Production of oil from the oil zone primarily causes water to move in to take its place; production of gas from the cap tends to cause oil to migrate into its place. In addition, the volumes of oil and gas remaining in the reservoir depend on changes in the pressure, since a decrease in pressure causes fluid expansion, gas liberation and oil shrinkage. A method of relating the future pressure to total withdrawals is used to describe the motions of fluids within the reservoir under conditions arising in possible modes of production. The analysis is based on two relationships and will reduce the problem to one amenable to digital computation. The first of these concerns the dependence of the pressure distribution in the entire aquifer furnishing the water drive upon the total reservoir withdrawals. This dependence is dictated by the permeability distribution and the extent of the aquifer; at present, such information is most readily obtained from the performance history by means of the resistancecapacitance reservoir analyzer. The second relation involves withdrawals, pressure in the reservoir, and movement of oil, gas, and water within the reservoir. The analysis is subject to certain simplifying assumptions that are necessary to permit solution of the problem. A comparison of the methods of this paper with those presently practiced is pertinent. One method of analysis is to use the reservoir analyzer to predict reservoir behavior based on aquifer characteristics determined from production history. Inasmuch as the total withdrawal rate depends upon the gas-oil and water-oil ratios, which depend in turn upon, among other things, the positions of the gas-oil and water-oil contacts, these ratios must be assumed in advance. In this paper these ratios are, instead, related to the computed positions of gas-oil and water-oil contacts. Thus, our method can be applied to problems in which the oil production rate is limited by produced gas-oil ratio, or to problems in which it is desired to determine the variable gas injection rate that will maintain the gas-oil or water-oil contact stationary. These problems cannot be worked satisfactorily on the analyzer. Another method presently used is based on a paper by Hurst.' AIR conditioning, or air cooling, for the improvement of ventilation in the Butte mines has come into increasing use during the past 10 years. In part, the methods practiced have been described in previous publications of the Institute, but some improvements on earlier methods have been made and a number of new features have been developed. This paper is presented as a record of progress made, and for the sake of completeness describes all general features of the work. The need for air conditioning in the ventilation of mines in the district arises from the fact that the temperature of the ground and mine water has shown a very great increase with increase in mining depth, and has now reached a maximum of slightly over 130°F. The most difficult part of the ventilation problem is the maintenance of temperature and humidity of a satisfactory standard in the working places, especially on the lower levels. Although ordinary ventilation is adequate to maintain good conditions in most of the working places it is subject to a number of limitations at great depth. Most important among these limitations is that with increase in depth the air becomes heated before it reaches the working places, both by compression from increase in atmospheric Pressure and by heat transferred to it from rock at high temPerature, so that its capacity for lowering temperatures is greatly reduced before it reaches the operating zone. Increasing depth of mining also increases the distance traveled by the air in its passage through the mine, and this causes a corresponding increase in resistance to air flow, so that there is greater difficulty in maintaining even the same volume in circulation. Thus, in the face of a demand that the ventilating system have a very much greater capacity to remove heat from the mine, the tendency is for that capacity to diminish. The only evident alternatives were (I) the opening of additional air shafts to increase the volume of air in circulation, (2) an extension of the existing system that would be subject to the same limitations, or (3) the adoption of an entirely different method such as air cooling. Fortunately for an economic solution of the problem, the mean annual temperature of the surface atmosphere at Butte is about 40°F., with very low relative humidity in summer, so that there is unlimited natural cooling power at a temperature range adaptable to air-conditioning methods. Methods Two similar methods of air conditioning are used, as necessitated by service requirements and dependent upon the equipment available. In one, which is the more important and has the greater cooling capacity, water is circulated in a closed circuit, and, alternately, first absorbs heat from warm mine air and then dissipates it in the surface atmosphere by cooling at a cooling tower. Measurements of the electrical conductivity, the thermal electromotive force, and the deviation from stoichiometry by thermogravimetry were made on ferrous oxide (wüstite) single crystals as well as on poly-crystalline samples in the temperature range of -900" to 1330°C. In the region defined by T 2 1000°C and 1.05 5 O/Fe 5 1.10 the electrical conductivity was shown to be proportional to the sixth root of- the oxygen partial pressure and to be linearly dependent on the deviation from stoichiometry. The absolute Seebeck coefficient of single and polycrystalline wüstite was shown to be independent of temperature in the above region and a p to n transition of the Seebeck coefficient was observed at O/Fe = 1.09 in polycrystalline wüstite. Analysis of the results showed that the predominant defects in wüstite in the above region were doubly ionized cation vacancies. The analysis also ruled out the existence of complexes of the type postulated by Roth, except that below 1000°C there is some evidence of 'association of defects. Of the three oxides of iron (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) only FeO (wüstite) can exist within a wide range of the ratio O/Fe. This has been shown by several investigations of the phase diagram using for instance chemical analysis of quenched samples'-4 or thermogravimetric measurements. 5,8 Darken and Gurry's1 data for example in the temper- ature range 1100o to 1400°C show that the lowest O/Fe ratio obtainable for FeOl +. is about 1.045 and that the existence range extends to O/Fe = 1.20 at 1400oC. On the basis of detailed analysis of thermogravimetric measurements made by Vallet and Raccah6 the existence of three varieties of wüstite at elevated temperatures was suggested by these authors and by Kleman. It is well-established that wüstite has a NaCl structure with vacant cation sites.3, 8 From a neutron-diffraction study of wüstite samples quenched to room temperature Roth9 concluded that defects in wüstite are mostly complexes composed of two cation vacancies and one interstitial cation in a tetrahedral site. The atomic arrangement in the vicinity of such a defect is similar to that in magnetite, where each occupied tetrahedral site is surrounded by four vacant octahedral positions disposed at the corners of a tetrahedron, so arranged that each vacancy is shared by two tetrahedral cations. Thus there is an average of two vacancies per interstitial. Recent X-ray diffraction measurements made by Smuts10 on quenched wüstite samples confirmed the results of Roth's neutron-diffraction experiments. Roth's model of defects in FeO can be regarded as a solid solution of Fe3O4 in FeO; salmon1' used this defect model to calculate the activity of Fe3O1 in FeO at high temperature and claimed good agreement with the results obtained experimentally by Darken and Gurry.' Each missing cation in wüstite is accompanied by two trivalent cations, thus preserving charge neutrality. The "holes" which differentiate between the Fe 2+ and Fe3' states of the ions in octahedral positions can overcome the attractive field of the cation vacancies, and are then free to move through the crystal as charge carriers. Eight laboratory-prepared aqueous base drilling muds representing common mud types, and 15 aqueous base drilling muds sampled in the field, have been used in an experimental investigation of the relationship between the streaming potential developed across a mud filter cake and the differential pressure causing filtrate flow. It has been established that the relationship is of the form, ES = kPy, where Es is the streaming potential, P the differential pressure and k and y are constants for any particular mud system at constant temperature. Beyond a certain minimum thickness this relationship is independent of filter cake thickness. Experiment has shown that both k and y are temperature dependent parameters and that in certain mud systems there is a critical value of P above which the simple relationship Es = kPY ceases to hold. The constant k tends to be a function of the mud resistivity at 77ºF, but the exponent y has not been found to be related to any commonly measured mud property. Certain field experiments are described which serve to demonstrate that the total SP (self potential) developed opposite a formation may be quantitatively accounted for as the algebraic sum of an electrochemical potential and an electrokinetic potential. A chart to permit the simple use of mean solution activities in the interpretation of electrochemical SP data is given and its use described. Various field methods for computing the electrokinetic SP component of the total SP are considered and rejected as being unduly complicated and inaccurate. It is shown that the employment of low resistivity drilling muds is essential if optimum accuracy is desired in the use of the S.P. curve for the purpose of computing connate water salinities by the electrochemical SP method. The use of such low resistivity drilling muds is accordingly recommended. INTRODUCTION In a previous paper' a quantitative analysis of the electrochemical compovent of the SP (self potential) curve was made and it was shown that the electrochemical* emf, E, could be expressed as E = ZtRT/F In a,/a,, where t is the transference number of the chloride ion, R is the gas constant, T the absolute temperature of the formation water and mud, a, the mean activity of the connate water (assumed to be sodium chloride) and a, the mean activity of the mud (as sodium chloride). The essential accuracy of this expression was confirmed by an investigation 2 of the SP kicks opposite sands of known water salinity. The logs examined had been routine runs in oil wells in a number of Mid-Continent states. Further confirmation of the original analysis of the electrochemical SP is implicit in the paper by Tixier3 wherein a relationship between the SP and the ratio of connate water and mud resistivities, based only on field data, is given. Allowing for the fact that mud and connate water resistivities were used instead of activities, and that electrokinetic effects were ignored, the constant reported by Tixier is essentially 2tRT/F. The error involved in the universal substitution of resistivities for activities will receive further reference below. Possible reasons for the fact that the electrochemical properties of shales do not appear to be significantly dependent upon either the nature or the quantity of cation exchange materials, such as clays, they contain has been considered at some length by Wyllie and Patnode.4 In the same paper, the probable effects of shale thickness and compaction on electrochemical efficiency, and hence the inherent difficulty of obtaining reliable laboratory-scale data, were also pointed out. Kirkendall diffusion of copper and nickel atoms across the bond interfaces, as well as oxygen diffusion in the core to the interfaces, are the mechanisms which control the variation in bond strength with annealing time at 1600°to 1800°F in the cupro-nickel clad copper Mint composite. The unequal mass transfer resulting from the high diffusion rate of copper in cupro-nickel compared with that of nickel in copper caused void formation in the core. Small voids also formed in the cladding after short annealing times. These may have been nucleated by nickel oxide particles which are formed by the dissociation of the cuprous oxide in the core and the movement of oxygen to the cupro-nickel interfaces. The bond strength drops to very low values for annealing time up to 3 hr when the void density is greatest. The increase in bond strength after 16 to 72 hr at 1600°F is a result of the decrease in the void density in the cupro-nickel cladding and the growth of grains across the interface. The void density decrease is attributable to grain boundary diffusion of vacancies to the surface. The abnormally large grains in the copper preclude a similar process from taking place in the core. THE solution to many engineering materials problems that cannot be satisfied by using a single metal or alloy is often attained by combining two or more metals in such a way that each component performs a different function, while the composite meets the overall requirements. The Coinage Act of 1965 authorized a changeover from the traditional 90 Ag-10 Cu dimes and quarters to a bimetallic laminate of 75 Cu-25 Ni clad on a copper core. Economic considerations as well as physical, chemical, and mechanical properties provided a basis for the selection of this composite as a substitute for the silver-bearing alloy. An extensive survey of alloys suitable for use as coinage was prepared by Battelle Memorial Institute for the U.S. Mint.1 It was found that the cupro-nickel/cop-per/cupro-nickel composite satisfied the required color, density, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, electrical properties, and magnetic properties to make it completely acceptable to the general public and the vending machine industry. This investigation is part of a program to determine the feasibility of reclaiming composite scrap by thermally degrading the bond strength of the cupro-nickel clad copper laminate. The composite exhibits bond degradation and subsequent bond improvement during annealing in the temperature range 1600" to 1800°F. A study of the operative diffusion processes and the resultant structural changes was made in order to explain the observed variations in bond strength with annealing time. INTRODUCTION The decade from 1969 to 1979 saw the crest of a wave of investments by companies and investors, primarily from the major industrial nations, in the metals and minerals industries of the so-called lesser developed countries. This was brought about by two major considerations: 1). The higher ore grades and therefore the higher profit potential of the mineral deposits in the third world countries, and 2). The desire, particularly by the European countries and by Japan, to ensure a safe supply of raw materials not available in their own countries. The decade began with the start of the Toquepala mine in Peru and the major investments in the Bougainville mine in Papua New Guinea and the Ertsberg mine in Indonesia. It ended with the start-up of Southern Peru Copper Company (SPCC) Cuajone mine in Peru and Inco's Soroako mine in Indonesia and the investments in several major alumina or aluminum projects in Australia and Brazil. Concurrent with this huge flow of funds into the mineral resources industry of the developing world was the build-up of a psychological fear in the host countries of exploitation/domination by the foreign investors. This resulted in an increasing trend towards: 1). Nationalization of existing mineral ventures, and 2). Tougher legal/fiscal frameworks for new ones. NATIONALIZATION Nationalization appeared in its earliest form as "Mexicanization" of the petroleum industry in Mexico in the 1930's, followed later by Mexicanization of the mining industry in general. This was enacted with the Mexican Mining Law of 1961 which required that 51% of the equity be owned by Mexican nationals. Later in the decade the equity share for foreign investors was reduced to 33 1/3% for the developers of the Frasch sulphur operations in the Isthumus of Tehuantepec. However, the law was not fully implemented in the copper industry until late 1970 with the purchase of 51% of the ownership in the Cananea Mining Company. The trend toward nationalization of the copper industry progressed to Chile where in 1967 under the Government of Eduardo Frei the major North American copper companies were induced to sell a one-half interest in their Chilean mines to the State. Likewise, in 1970, "Zambianization" took place, when the two major operating companies Roan Selection Trust (Amax) and Zamanglo (Anglo American) were restructured into Roan Consolidated Mines (RCM) and Nchanga Consolidated Mines (NCCM) providing the government with 51% of the equity ownership. Whilst the earlier forms of nationalization in general constituted a fairly priced buy-out (El Teniente, Chile for US$80 million, RCM for US$117.8 million, NCCM for US$178.7 million), the total nationalization of the Chilean mining companies in 1970 under Salvador Allende did not. Later, "Western" countries joined this trend and on October 29, 1973, Mr. Gough Whitlam proclaimed that "overseas capital must continue... in partnership with Australian capital" and "in some special energy cases we have an objective of 100% Australian ownership". In 1974 Mr. Pierre Trudeau stated: "The Liberal Party of Canada sets as an objective that new resources projects in the natural resource field should have at least 50% and preferably 60% Canadian equity ownership". FOREIGN INVESTMENT The situation for the foreign investor in the worldwide resource industry rapidly deteriorated from then on. New features appeared in mineral exploitation and operating agreements, centering not only on local government/local companies ownership but also on increased taxation. The new tax rate (mineral tax, royalty, and income tax) for the semi-government companies NCCM and RCM in Zambia became an effective 73%. Likewise the much publicized and discussed renegotiated Bougainville agreement brought dramatic increases in the total "take" by the PNG Government. In a paper recently read before the Institute by Mr. W. A. Goodyear, a useful presentation was made of the subject of the production of' water-gas on a large scale, by the use of a regenerative form of apparatus. By way of supplement to that paper, a brief statement of the details of a plan which was carried out at the works of the Elgin National Watch Company at Elgin, Ill., may be of interest, 'although the ultimate result of the working of the producer was not successful or satisfactory. This company had decided to build a gas-works for the supply of illuminating gas to their factory, on a much larger scale than that of the petroleum-works which had very successfully supplied the smaller buildings for many years, and in March, 1882, the material for a gas-making cupola furnace was purchased. Assuming that rock behavior, during cutting with a single diamond, may be approximated by that of a rigid, Coulomb, plastic material, a theory of single diamond cutting action has been developed. Using this theory, the stresses on the diamond cutting surface and the components of the cutting force have been determined. Theoretical results agree reasonably well with available experimental data. The theory of cutting of single diamonds may be used as the basis for subsequent study of the perfonnance of surface set diamond drill bits and other surface set diamond cutting tools. INTRODUCTION For more than twenty years, surface set diamond bits have been used successfully in the mining and petroleum industries to drill and core rock formations that range from medium hard to the hardest known formations. Most extremely hard rock formations cannot be economically drilled or cored by any other means. In view of the growing use and importance of surface set diamond drill bits, it is reasonable to study the way in which these tools cut, and the factors that influence wear of the diamonds. Such knowledge will contribute to better bit design and will improve operating procedures. To analyze the cutting performance of these tools it is appropriate to consider the way in which an individual diamond cuts. Once this is established, the over-all performance of the bits can be determined by considering the total effect of the individual diamonds. In recent years there has been a growing interest in rock mechanics and there now exist several publications dealing with the deformation and failure of rocks. Notable experimental work has been reported by Bredthauer,1 Handin and Hager,2, 3 and Gnirk and Cheatham.4 An extensive collection of data pertaining to rock properties at low confining pressures has been given by Wuerker.5 Cheatham and Gnirk have recently presented an excellent review of the state of knowledge regarding analytical and experimental rock deformation and failure.6 Generally rocks are extremely weak in uniaxial tension, and weak or only moderately strong in uniaxial compression. Both tensile failure and compressive failure are generally brittle in nature. This means that there is little or no deformation or "flow" of the material before shear or tensile fracture occurs. Thus, until fracture occurs, rock behaves very nearly like an elastic material in uniaxial stress. Significant changes in behavior of rock occur under conditions of triaxial compressive stress. There is generally a marked increase in compressive strength and in ductility. It has been demonstrated that the failure becomes plastic (in a macroscopic sense) at sufficiently high values of confining pressure. Sharp wedge chisel indentation studies conducted by Gnirk and Cheatham indicate that many rocks behave in a plastic manner at relatively low triaxial compressive stress states.4 If "failure" under triaxial compressive conditions is considered to be either complete rupture or macroscopic plastic flow, then the general failure characteristics of a rock can be reasonably well represented by the commonly known Mohr envelope. This certainly is not a perfect failure criterion (since the effect of the intermediate principal stress is neglected) but it has been found to be adequate for most engineering purposes. Mohr envelopes usually are constructed graphically using experimental triaxial test data. For purposes of analysis it is convenient to represent the envelope in equation form. Among the several approximate forms appearing in the literature, a parabolic form is suggested by Cheatham,7 and an exponential form is suggested by Paone and Tandanand.8 The exponential form has been adopted for this study, and based on published data, appropriate parameters have been established for 19 rock types. THE chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 c.c. of a solution containing 495 mg. of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative proof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type [R+ + Y- + MX =± RX + M+ + Y¬] where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the massaction and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or Y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (1) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (2) the contact angles1 of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit testwork combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel at times could increase production rates by as much as 10% over that achieved by grinding operators; (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2% or more to be statistically significant; and (3) for a 2% increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in computer installation. Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long-term objectives. The short-term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been successfully met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2% have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long-term objectives are (1) off-line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units; (2) on-line experiments to study alternative control tactics; and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.

The surface-diffusion coefficient for , has been measured on (111) and (100) surfaces of copper from 1000" to 620°C. D,(Ge) on the (111) is two to three times that on the (100) as was found earlier for copper and gold on copper. D, (Ge) on both (111) and (100) is about thirty times that found for gold or copper tracers on the same surfaces, while in the temperature range where both D,(Ge) and Ds(Au) have been measured the activation energy for germanium is the same as that for gold. The apparent activation energy for Ds(Ge) is not a constant, but decreases with temperature. In a recent paper we reported on the application of a new tracer technique to the determination of the surface-diffusion coefficient (D,) for gold and copper on (111) and (100) surfaces of copper.' In this paper, we shall give the results obtained when the same technique was used to measure Ds for germanium on the (111) and (100) surfaces of copper. In addition to providing data on D., for an additional element on copper, the longer half-life of germanium (275 days) meant that Ds could be measured down to a much lower temperature and thus over a much wider temperature range (1000" to 620°C) than was used in our gold-tracer work (1060" to 780°C) or copper mass-transport studies (1060" to 800). The apparent activation energy for D, (Ge) is essentially the same as that found for gold or copper in the same temperature range, though the values of D, (Ge) are thirty times greater than those found for gold or copper tracers. The most interesting new result found is that the apparent activation energy for Ds(Ge), and thus Do, definitely increases with temperature. Such a trend was much more apparent in Gjostein's mass-transport work on copper than in our own, though in an earlier paper we mentioned the difficulty of fitting all of our points with one straight line:= No real explanation of this is given though experiments done on grain boundary groove growth at various ambient pressures demonstrate unequivocally that vapor transport plays no part in the increase in activation energy with temperature.

Laboratory experiments on the reverse combustion of tar sands in a linear adiabatic system have shown that a highly upgraded oil can be produced from an exceedingly viscous, immobile oil. The dependence on the air-injection rate of peak temperature, combustion-zone velocity, oil recovery, air-oil ratio, residual coke and oil, fuel burned and distribution of product gases is shown graphically. Eflects of initial temperature, oxygen concentration, oil saturation and heat loss are discussed. Experiments bearing on the coking properties of heavy oils are mentioned and some results exhibited. Field application of the process hinges on the existence of adequate air permeability and the rate of reaction under reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION It has been established that oil can be recovered from underground reservoirs by means of at least two fundamentally distinct methods involving in situ combustion of a certain fraction of the oil. Characteristic of both of these known methods is the production of oil from one or more wells by means of hot gases formed when a high-temperature reaction zone is advanced through the reservoir. In both cases, the reaction zone is created by heating certain of the wells to a sufficiently high temperature prior to the introduction of air, and the zone is maintained and advanced through the reservoir by appropriate control of the air-injection rate. In the first of these methods, which is called "forward combustion",' the combustion zone advances in a direction which is generally the same as that of the air flow; whereas in the second method, "reverse combustion",' the combustion zone moves in a direction generally opposite to that of the air flow. Forward combustion, on the one hand, is an ideal combustion process in the sense that a minimum of the most undesirable fraction of the oil is consumed as fuel in the form of coke, a clean sand is left behind and generated heat is used as efficiently as possible. However, the applicability of forward combustion is limited. Since the products of combustion, vaporized oil and connate water must flow into relatively cold regions of the reservoir, there is an upper limit on the viscosity of oil which can be moved by this process in a practical and economical fashion.' On the other hand, it is characteristic of reverse combustion that the vaporized oil and water together with the products of combustion are produced through sand which is already hot and has had its mobile liquid content eliminated. This means there is no upper limit on oil viscosity; indeed, the oil may be an entirely immobile semi-solid. However, fuel for the process is an intermediate fraction of the original oil, and the most undesirable fraction remains on the sand surface as a substantial deposit of coke. Since this coked material is not burned during reverse combustion, it represents energy which is available for the production of oil but is not used for this purpose. It follows that one can expect economics to be somewhat less attractive with reverse combustion than with forward combustion. Nevertheless, it is a process which is designed for reservoirs where forward combustion is impossible and, as such, has become a subject of experimental and theoretical investigation. In this paper, only experiments made with tar sands are discussed. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCESS We proceed, then, to consider the process of reverse combustion in greater detail. Fig. 1 illustrates a temperature profile defining a combustion zone which moves from right to left when air flows from left to right. In Zone 1, the temperature is the initial reservoir temperature, and the tar sand is as yet unaltered. This statement must be modified to the extent that physical properties of the oil may be changed by low-temperature oxidation at reservoir temperature. As air passes into Zone 2, which has been warmed by conduction, it assists in vaporization of the very light ends (if there are any), and oxidation occurs at a significant rate. In this region, there is almost no production of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide because predominantly addition-type reactions take place with the formation of oxygenated compounds such as aldehydes and acids together with water. Except in the case of a few metals—silicon, bismuth, cadmium, lead, zinc, and tin—an aluminum-rich compound is formed in each binary system, which forms a eutectic with the aluminum or its solid solution with this compound: Thus such compounds as FeAla, CuA12, Mg4Al3, and NiAls are formed, which are found in aluminum-rich alloys of their respective series as eutectics with the aluminum solid solution. These compounds are, in all cases, hard and brittle and their presence affects profoundly the physical properties of the alloys in which they occur. Within the zinc-aluminum system a compound, Al2Zn,, is formed that decomposes at lower temperatures. Silicon and tin each form a simple eutectiferous series with aluminum; bismuth, lead, and cadmium are only partly miscible in the liquid state with it. The extent of the solubility in aluminum, in solid solution, of these compounds or of the elements themselves, in the case of those series in which compounds are not formed, is of the greatest importance in

ABOUT twenty-seven years ago W. bergl discovered that interesting detail could be seen in an X-ray diffraction spot made with a rock-salt crystal if the recording photographic film were held very close to the reflecting crystal. He also showed that much of this detail could be explained in terms of the deformation structure of the specimen. In the same year, 1931, Fox and parr2 reported that X-ray reflections from a quartz crystal were much more intense while the crystal was undergoing piezoelectric oscillation than when it was at rest. This observation was soon confirmed (and explained in terms of X-ray extinction) by Barrett3 in the United States and by Nishikawa et a1.,4 in Japan. During the next few years Barrett refined Berg's method for making X-ray diffraction micrographs and applied it to the study of metallic crystals. He reported this work in the 1945 annual lecture of the AIME.5 Since 1945 relatively little use has been made of the Berg-Barrett (B-B) method for making diffraction micrographs, though considerable interest in investigating subcrystal structures by other methods has developed. Some of these methods depend upon evaporation6 or chemical etching7 and, therefore, suffer from the occasional intrusion of subtle artifacts such as those recently reported by Hooker for leada and Welsh for aluminum.9 Other methods require the introduction of foreign elements which "decorate" the substructure in some way, thereby rendering it detectable by direct" or indirect1'. visual examination. Still others depend upon complex and often highly questionable analyses of X-ray diffraction line profiles. There have also been a number of related X-ray techniques, such as the Lambot,12 Schulz13 and Merlini and Guinier,14 which have proved to be quite useful for specific applications. Some of these methods give a picture of the substructure which is more or less directly related to the shape and the topography of the specimen. The Berg-Barrett method carries this desirable feature to the limit. Closely related to the B-B method are three photographic X-ray techniques recently described by Lang.15 These methods give beautiful pictures of the internal structure of crystals but are limited by the facts that the required apparatus is rather complex, exposure times are long, and the specimen crystals must be thin. An experimental appraisal which I have recently made of the original B-B method has shown that this simple technique is not only inexpensive and convenient, but can give more information than was apparently realized by its inventors. For example, first-order subgrains in iron-silicon crystals were clearly delineated and their relative orientation subject to description. Also defect structures could be seen within the subgrains and in some materials slip bands could be clearly seen with respect to the topography of the rest of the specimen. This much had already been described by Barrett. However, in the present study it was found that the actual sites of individual dislocations which emerge upon the crystal surface could be located. Furthermore, by a simple procedure, the direction (but not sign) of the dislocation Burgers' vector could be defined as well.

This paper studies the behavior of rock at the initial state of crater formation resulting from stresses created under a drill bit. The purpose of this study is to determine which mechanical properties of rock are important in rock fragmentation by drilling. Although a definite relation between the drilling strength and relevant mechanical properties has not been established, maximum yield strength or hardness of rock is apparently a parameter of drillability of rock. The strengths of rock were considered from the Mohr-Coulomb criterion from which the surface of failure was constructed. The results from previous triaxial tests on Solenhofen limestone were adopted in establishing a limit of failure. Inelastic behavior of Solenhofen limestone was observed under a low velocity impact of a hemispherical bit and under static indentation with a similar bit. Permanent set at low applied loads in the indented area was measured with an interferometric technique. A quantitative determination of strengths of the rock was made under static indentation. The maximum yield strength estimated from the average stress over the contact area for plastic deformation was used as the crushing strength of rock under a drill bit. Much research has been done on energy requirements and mechanisms of energy dissipation to perfect rock fragmentation by a drilling process. But more needs to be done. More needs to be known about the mechanisms of energy dissipation or failure criteria of rocks in the drilling process in order to evaluate the efficiency of energy requirements in specific rock fragmentation. This paper examines some published studies on rock failure and energy dissipation and presents some findings in that phase of research concerned with rock fragmentation by drilling. This work is specifically concerned with rock behavior at an early stage of failure induced by a concentrated load. Consideration is limited to the primary phase of the crater formation under drill bit, i.e., before chipping takes place. Failure Phenomena of Rocks: Failure of rocks can be classified into two types, fracture and plastic flow. Both involve separation of material to form new surfaces with complete or partial loss of cohesion. Fracture is further classified as extension (or cleavage) fracture and shear fracture. Extension fracture involves separation in a plane without shear stress component, while shear fracture involves slippage along a plane as a result of combined stresses. Then, shear fracture inclines to the axes of the principal stresses. Plastic flow occurs under combined stresses, especially at high confining pressure and temperature, and denotes macroscopically irrecoverable deformation of rocks. Flow mechanisms have been classified as in-tergranular failure, intragranular gliding, and re-crystallization of mineral constituents.6 Failure phenomena in rocks are complicated because they include fractures and plastic flow as well as a friction process developed intrinsically as the internal stresses increase. All can occur in one rupture process, depending on the varying stress conditions. Both fracture and plastic flow are encountered in rock drilling. Rock failure under a drill bit as observed in drop tests simulating a single blow of a percussion drill, consists of two types, crushing and chipping. Crushing is considered as a separation of material particles by many fractures resulting from the application of high compressive stresses exceeding the strength of rock at the contact area. Chipping results from subsurface fractures extended to the face surface; this phase is preceded by crushing or surface deformation. The state of stress under the drill bit and the strength of rock create and control these two types of failure. The state of stress under the bit and in the vicinity of the contact area depend on the bit configuration and the magnitude of applied force. The strength of rock, characterized by its ability to resist penetration, depends on its composition and structure. However, the term "strength" quantitatively defined, is still ambiguous and may or may not correspond to the tensile, compressive and shear strength obtained from simple tests. Rock Failure Criterion: Rocks are weak in tension, their tensile strength being many times less than their compressive strength. This characteristic excludes
