The Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig. 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia. It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. It also presents several theories on the action of explosives in this type of blasting. The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends downward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break down the rock in large blocks.

The Kinta valley, in the State of Perak, one of the largest of the Federated Malay States, is probably at the present time the richest alluvial tin-district in the world, Perak producing from 20,000 to 25,000 tons of tin annually, and the Kinta valley being the chief producer. The valley runs approximately north and south, and is 30 miles long by 12 wide. It is very flat, the mountain-ranges on either side rising abruptly from the plain, that on the east being the great Central range of the peninsula, and that on the west a subsidiary range marked " Kledang " on the map, Fig. 1. The valley is drained by the Kinta river, which rises in the eastern mountain range and flows south to join the Perak river, being joined by numerous streams from both mountain-ranges.

The southern gold-fields offer some of the most complex and trying problems encountered in mining; and their successful solution often means the success or failure of the particular enterprise involved. In vein-mining, where the values are scattered over large areas, making it necessary to handle a large tonnage of very low average grade, the successful solution has been found in some instances by a combined hydraulicking and milling; water under pressure being used as the mining agent, and also for transporting the broken material to the mills, and effecting in its passage a partial concentration of the product by washing out the lighter and looser dirt of the ore-mass. The placer-deposits of the South, which were the original localities from which gold was mined, have been extensively worked, and to any one now undertaking their development offer many difficulties. The antiquity of the industry in this field, which was the cradle (in fact, literally the rocker), in which the California '49-er was born, gives assurance that all the deposits available to water and natural drainage have been more or less extensively worked already, so that, as a rule, any placer-deposits yet remaining undeveloped may be considered to offer some difficulty beyond the ability of the " old-timer " to overcome.

IN all metallurgical processes and mining operations, water is an element which receives attention from the management ; and provision is required either for a means of supply, or for the disposal of accumulation. In many works the quantity of water to be furnished is sufficiently large to place the item of water supply of equal importance to the reception of material or disposition of product ; and the means to be employed receive, or should receive, the most careful investigation. Unconventional mineral deposits are those that differ significantly from productive deposits in mineralogy, grade, or geologic setting. Thus, the initial representatives of each deposit type are, by definition, “unconventional” until they are exploited. The “unconventional” status changes to "conventional" because of economic shifts (e.g., bulk silver ores), because of technological innovations (e.g., froth flotation), or simply through the recognition of, and production from, novel mineral concentrations. Heretofore the discovery of new deposit types has been almost entirely accidental, but the long- established concept of the geochemical cycle provides a nearly untouched opportunity and challenge for the application of geochemistry in predicting novel, potentially economic, mineral concentrations.

The cassiterite flotation circuit at the Renison concentrator has operated with increasing levels of automatic control since late 1981. The circuit operates at high levels of recycle which make it difficult to control manually so that the initial control strategy was to stabilize the mass flows around the circuit prior to circuit optimization. Control of the air supplies to the flotation banks was introduced to achieve this stabilization and initial results indicated that some success has been achieved, as indicated by improvements in the overall circuit performance and reduction in the stream variabilities. These improvements were gained through control of the major recycle to the roughing stage which dominates the circuit behaviour. Feed-forward control of collector addition has also been introduced successfully, but attempts to control the final concentrate grade have been less satisfactory. This work is continuing and the objective of current activity is to include the three cleaning stages in an overall circuit control scheme as a first phase of metallurgical optimization of the operation.

LEASING the Teapot dome to the Mammoth Oil Co. is the culminating anticlimax of the "conserva-tion movement." It is just the touch required to make a full fiasco of the whole affair. If the revered wielder of the "Big Stick" were still with us, we could hear it fall harder than it did on Ballinger. Of all the oil reserves set aside by presidential decree, there was only one which certainly could con-serve much oil for the future. This was Naval Reserve No. 3, on the Teapot dome, Wyoming. After secret negotiations, carefully guarded from the press and from the knowledge of other oil men, we are suddenly informed that this last and only known chance to save much oil for future naval needs has been given away for early development.

Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer.

THE CHAIRMAN (HENRY D. HIBBARD, Plainfield, N. J.).-This paper is timely because of the changed conditions due to the great war, but apparently its scope is limited to oxidation process steels. Referring to the four numbered observations on page 199: No. 1 seems to ignore Johnson's discoveries about oxygen in cast iron. No. 2 ignores crucible steel. No. 3 ignores red short steel containing enough gas solvents to make it solid, while No. 4 assumes that a deoxidizer is necessarily a gas decomposer or solvent and vice versa, which it not always is. From these observations it is deduced. that the only hole-forming gas in steel is an oxide of carbon (CO presumably is meant), which is not true.

Production of both metallurgical and thermal coal represents a significant sector of the mining economy of British Columbia. The coal measures are located in the Rocky Mountains, and the majority of the coal is produced by open pit mining. The coal seams occur interbedded with siltstones, sandstones, mudstones, and shales. Consequently, large volumes of waste rock are generated in the course of open pit mining. The waste rock is consigned to waste rock piles that of necessity must be developed on moderate to steeply sloping terrain. Some of the waste dumps currently under development will ultimately contain in excess of 500 million cubic meters of material, and some of the proposed waste piles will attain heights in excess of 300 m. These waste piles must be developed in a manner that will assure their stability through all stages of development, as well as over the long term after mining operations have been completed. This paper describes methods of waste dump development, factors affecting stability, modes of potential failure, and a simple method for monitoring movements to provide a warning of pending unstable conditions.

Diatoms are microscopic aquatic plants of the order Bacillariaceae. They are unicellular plants with skelctons made up of amorphous opaline silica. The skeletons show highly ornate, complicated geometrical designs. Diatoms live in water virtually everywhere. They are found in clean sea water, brackish water, and fresh-water lakes and ponds. When conditions are right, diatoms propagate by subdivision in huge numbers. Alkalinity, temperature, and the presence of high concentrations of silica in the water largely control diatom life. When the diatoms die the skeletons drop to the bottom of their habitat to form oozes of varying thicknesses. Diatomites Diatomite, or diatomaceous earth, is composed essentially of the siliceous remains of the diatoms, although other organic skeletons are also present, especially in sea-water deposits where radiolaria, sponges and silico-flagellates are common. Impurities are generally carbonaceous material, fine-grained silt, volcanic ash and dust, and occasional coarse grains of sand. Diatomites are marine, brackish, or fresh-water, depending upon types of diatoms and their method of deposition. Diatoms More than 8000 species of diatoms have been named and classified. Some are definitely classified as to their habitat; some are so well recognized as to their living conditions that they can be stated to be diagnostic types, and when encountered in a deposit determine the origin of the deposit. DURing the summer and winter of 1918 eleven standard rigs were erected in the United Kingdom to test the petroleum prospects of- ten structures, eight of which were in England and two in Scotland. By the fall of 1921 ten of the wells were completed; the remaining one, the D'Arcy in Scotland, was stopped some months later. The tests were deep ones, five of the wells being 4000 ft. or more, the rest varying in depth between 1810 and 3918 ft. The total footage drilled was 40,047 ft. The holes were put down with standard or cable tools purchased in the United States (except the boilers). The larger sizes of casing, 10-in. and above, were also from America, while the smaller sizes were secured in Scotland. The Hardstoft well in England found a small production of high-grade oil and the D'Arcy well also encountered what is reported as a favorable showing at a depth of 1810 ft. The Werrington and West Calder wells had to be abandoned on account of drilling difficulties. The Apedale well encountered great thicknesses of ash in the Carboniferous and had to be abandoned on account of depth. The results might be summarized by saying that of the ten structures drilled upon, two yielded encouraging showings; three cannot be considered as having been adequately tested; and five produced dry holes, although in some of these small oil showings and gas were met. The total cost of the work amounted to about half a million pounds sterling, which sum includes the cost of all equipment, subsequently sold by the government. The work, under the superintendence of V. L. Conaghan, took place for the most part in the period immediately following the war—a period of high prices, labor and transportation difficulties, and unsettled conditions generally; factors tending to retard the work and affect the costs. ALTHOUGH Gaudin1 and more recently Sutherland2 have calculated the probability of collision of a falling mineral particle with a rising bubble, there is no published information concerning the details of the mechanism of attachment of a collector-coated particle to a bubble. During the past year the writer has developed a theory for the mechanism of attachment, which has been substantiated experimentally.' Funds for the investigation and for some of the equipment used have been supplied by the Mines Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota. Motion picture studies of the phenomena involved in the collision between mineral particles and bubbles, such as those of Spedden and Hannan,3 show that the contact can be completed within 0.3 millisec. Formulas developed for rigid bodies have hitherto been used' for the calculation of the motion of bubble and particle, but it is obvious that a bubble cannot be regarded as a rigid body. On the contrary, Spedden and Hannan's pictures show a great degree of deformation during the collision. The time of attachment was calculated as the time the particle drifted past the bubble. Time of Collision The theory presented in this paper enables calculation of the time of collision; using the concept that the bubble, or more generally, a liquid-air interface, acts as an elastic body. The elasticity, defined as the restoring force on a mechanical deformation, is caused by, the surface tension and is the result of the principle of the minimum of free surface energy. It is well known that an elasticity together with a mass determines a frequency of vibration. The vibrations of jets and drops caused by the elasticity of the interface are known to comply exactly with the classical theory of capillarity.5 However, the vibrations of isolated bubbles, as distinct from foams, have not been investigated previously. The following equation, presented elsewhere,' has been deduced for these frequencies: [3fB = 9.20•'./V•Vn- (n-1) • (n+2) /8[1]] in which fB is the frequency of a harmonic of the bubble in cycles per second, V the volume of the bubble in cc, n a number determining the order of the harmonic, and n = 2 the basic vibration. The first (basic) harmonic describes a change of the spherical bubble to an ellipsoidal bubble. The higher harmonics are more complicated, for the circumference of the bubble is divided approximately into as many parts' as the order of the harmonic. As an example, Spedden and Hannan's published motion picture of, a vibrating bubble corresponds to the sixth harmonic. Eq 1 shows that only the first and third harmonics are simple multiples (1 and 3), all the others being irrational fractions of the basic frequency. This means that the shape of the vibration can change with time and is in general unsymmetric in respect to the time axis. Such conditions prevail when there is a distributed elasticity or mass, as in the case of vibrating membranes or rods. The constant 9.20 is valid for water at room temperature, but a general solution involving the physical constants of the liquid has not been found. The case of the floating particle is much easier to treat I than that of the bubble. It can be assumed that the elasticity is caused exclusively by the interface and that the mass is concentrated in the particle together with some adhering water. The following expression for the frequency of a system, of one degree of freedom can be applied: [1E/m[2] fP = 27] Here f, is the frequency of the particle vibration in cycles per second, E the elasticity in dynes per cm, and m the mass in grams. The classical theory of impact phenomena gives the time of collision during the striking of a spring (in this case the surface of the bubble) by a mass, as: [t~ = 2/f = 7r\/m/E[3]] It is now possible to develop an expression for the elasticity of a floating cylindrical particle. The force equilibrium of a cylinder floating end on at the air-liquid interface is given by the well-known equation (Poisson' 1831) [aP = 4 D2.pL•g•h +7rD•y sin a[4]] which accounts for the buoyancy and the action of the surface tension where P is the force acting on the particle in dynes (weight-buoyancy), D the diameter of the cylinder in cm, pL the density of the liquid in grams per cc, g the acceleration of gravity = 981 cm per sec2, h the depression of the cylinder below the surface of-the liquid in cm, y the surface tension in dynes per cm and a the supporting angle' or the one required to insure equilibrium, a being smaller than the contact angle ?. Horizontally stratified lithologies of certain open pit or strip mines create unique stability problems for mine operations. Such problems may result when specific lithologies, such as sandstone and shale, exist in final or long-term slopes. Slope instabilities may occur when a sandstone unit directly overlies a shale unit and ground water drains into the mine along the lithologic contact. In essence, the ground water erodes the underlying shales and undercuts the sandstone. Large sandstone blocks fail in a toppling mode and cause safety and cleanup problems. Use of rock reinforcement including chain link fencing, roof bolt mats, rock bolts, rock anchors, and shotcrete offers a possible solution to the problem.

A REFERENCE to the geological map of Alabama shows the coal- measures of that State to form three distinct fields. The Coosu, or most easterly, contains about one hundred square miles ; the Cahaba, or middle field, which is also the most southern true coal in the United States, contains about 230 square miles ; and the Warrior field, which contains in the State of Alabama some 5000 square miles, is the southern extremity of the great carboniferous deposit, which extends through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. But very little has yet been done towards developing those coal- fields, partly owing to the absence of all commercial manufacturing enterprise in the South under slavery, and partly owing to the want of capital and the disturbed condition of the South since the war.
