INTRODUCTION In all cave mining operations waste is drawn mixed in the ore, hauled, hoisted and milled. This waste usually contains some mineral which partly covers some of the costs of mining and milling it, but it still re- presents a loss of profits as the production rate from the mine is matched to the mill capacity - every tonne of waste milled replaces a tonne of profitable ore. Draw control aims to reduce the amount of waste drawn and to increase the amount of ore recovered. It is also used to regulate the grade of ore flowing to the mill and in block cave blocks to prevent potential stress build- up on the major apexes above grizzly drifts. This paper summarises what has been learnt about draw control in the forty years that cave mining methods have been used in the three largest underground chrysotile asbestos mines in the southern hemisphere. The four mining methods to which draw control has been applied are: a. Block caving. b. Shrinkage with overburden caving. c. Sublevel caving. d. Open stoping. Open stoping has been included because on a number of occasions severe falls from the back and side of these open stopes have occurred. Without full records of where and when ore is blasted, when and how much ore has been drawn from each of the drawpoints, it would be impossible to analyse the migration of ore and fallen waste in the stope. Several problems peculiar to chrysotile asbestos ore bodies affect the practice of draw control. Heterogeneous fragmentation, cavities, side pressures and the interaction of stresses in the caved ore affect the migration of ore under draw. Fibre is normally not developed uniformly throughout the ore bodies, values vary from place to place but there is usually a general decrease upwards and the hangingwall contact is an economic limit. The immediate hangingwall rock frequently looks like the ore body hostrock and is difficult to recognise in a drawpoint, and cannot be used as the marker for stopping draw. During caving or shrinkage, a large proportion of fibre becomes detached from the host rock and re- ports in the fines, which migrate differently to the larger rocks. The fines are not sticky, and flow easily if loose and dry, but compacted, the fibre and rock fines con- solidate the ore. During draw the proportion of fines in the ore varies considerably, as fines either flow relatively freely between the large rocks or become trapped and compacted above large rocks or hangups. This creates a large sampling error in drawpoint grade assessments, whether done visually or by bulk sampling, unless the assessments are done frequently. The method of draw control used is to regulate the draw rate in an attempt to lower the ore-waste interface as evenly as possible, and to finally stop working the drawpoint when a calculated tonnage has been drawn.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory executed 19 intermediate scale cratering experiments in oil shale at the Colony Mine in Garfield County, Colorado. These experiments have led to a better under- standing of fracture characteristics and fragmentation of & - oil shale by use of a conventional high explosive. Geologic site characterization included detailed mapping, coring, and sample analyses. Site-specific geology was observed to be a major influence on the resulting crater geometry. The joint patterns at the experimental site frequently defined the final crater symmetry. Secondary influences included vugs, lithology changes, and grade fluctuations in the local stratigraphy. Most experiments, in both the rib and floor, were conducted to obtain data to investigate the fragmentation results within the craters. The rubble was screened for fragment- size distributions. Geologic features in proximity to the explosive charge had minimal effect on the rubble due to the overpowering effect of the detonation. However, these same features became more influential on the fracture and rubble characteristics with greater distances from the shothole. Postshot cores revealed a direct relationship between the grade of the oil shale and its susceptibility to fracturing. The Colony Mine experiments have demonstrated the significant role of geology in high explosive/oil shale interaction. It is probable that this role will have to be considered for larger applications to blast patterns and potential problems in retort stability in the future of oil shale development.

Alluvial gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river, by Paulino, a Braziliaii convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, CirubQ, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Vat, and Couriege. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysee, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about %g5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary bet.ween the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company, the Dutch Guiana Freiich Minillg Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have produced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of tho production went through French Quiana and

IT is recognized that ingot structure is important in determining the quality of finished steel. Such elements of ingot structure as the size, shape and distribution of primary crystals; the size, shape and distribution of shrinkage cavities; the degree and kind of segregation (both macro and micro); the distribution of nonmetallic impurities and gas cavities are each the result of solidification phenomena. These structural features vary with variations in ingot practice: Their control requires a knowledge of their correlation with the variables of ingot practice. The structures of full-sized commercial steel ingots have been studied extensively by the Steel Ingots Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute.1 This work has contributed much to our knowledge of ingot structure and the factors that control it. These investigations of necessity have been limited in scope because of their costliness and the great amount of time required. Studies of the structure of small steel ingots have not been very satisfactory because of the rapid rate of freezing of the ingots. Their structures are thus difficult to resolve and to interpret. Medium sizes of steel ingots in the ranges of 150 to 500 lb. do offer opportunity for study, but their cost also becomes greater and their use less expeditious. Experimental models for the study of steel-ingot structure have been made of nonferrous metals. Gathmann2 used lead-tin alloys and reported that they were satisfactory for determination of the location of the major shrinkage cavities and the "planes of weakness" resulting from the pattern of crystallization. Certain features of mold design have been illustrated by these results. Bezdenezhnihk3 has used copper and aluminum ingots similarly and has shown the effect of mold-wall thickness on the depth of columnar grains. These studies of nonferrous models have been useful, but their results have been limited because the analogy with steel ingots obviously is not a close one. Model wax ingots have also been useful in pointing out important features of mold design. Gathmann4 watched the solidification of wax ingots, through a glass-walled mold, and has reported the effects of mold type on the location of the shrinkage cavities. Segregation was simulated by using a mixture of paraffin and stearine and adding a red dye that on freezing segregated preferentially to the stearine. Brearley5 also used wax models to determine .the effects of some of the principal features of mold design. Carlsson and Hultgren6 used stearic acid to show that the columnar crystals of ingots tend to slope upward progressively from the mold wall toward the center of the ingot. In 1930 the late Dr. Reinhardt Thiessen set up a method of microscopic analysis and type classification of coal that has since been followed as standard practice in the coal-petrography laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. Thiessen's terminology which designated the constituent parts of coal in terms of botanical origin was introduced in 1920.1 The technique, however, of preparing a completely representative series of thin sections from a column sample of coal for use in making quantitative determinations of coal components with a microscope was developed about 10 years later by Thiessen and coworkers G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O'Donnell.2 Complete thin-section analyses subsequently have been made of 126 column samples of various ranks and types of American coals. The data and information were assembled from these thin-section studies and published in a large number of reports dealing chiefly with investigations of the coking and hydrogena-tion properties of certain American coals. In the years following adoption of Thies-sen's method, a considerable amount of work was done in collecting column samples of many coals, making routine thin-section analyses of these, interpreting the results, and finding practical application for the information in other fields of coal research. The many reports and papers covering the work in coal petrography, however, offer very little discussion that can be considered as critical appraisal of the technique. Criticism outside the Bureau most often has voiced questioning opinions concerning the accuracy of the method used of measuring coal components microscopically and classifying the coal into arbitrary types on the basis of the quantitative determinations. The principal purpose of this paper is to discuss in some detail and present data showing the results of certain investigative work done in the petrography laboratory on the accuracy of the Bureau's method of microscopic measurement of components in coal thin sections. Data from microscopic analyses on file made by G. C. Sprunk and H. J. O'Donnell were freely used in the investigation, and a table of columnar analyses from an unpublished manuscript by Sprunk is included in this paper for reference. In the course of the experimental work a method was developed for measuring in-strumentally with a planimeter the components shown in micrographs of selected thin sections. Measuring coal components with a planimeter furnished useful information for studying the accuracy of microscopically measuring the same components in thin sections. Since the end of World War 11 interest has been increasing in the use of shaped charges in the mining industry and in other industries using explosives for blasting purposes. Shaped charges employ the principle known as the "Munroe effect," which was discovered by Charles E. Munroe more than 50 years ago (in 1888). Details of their design have been explained elsewhere.1,2,3 Fig I shows the essential features of design of two types of shaped charges (with conical and hemispherical cavities) and a schematic sketch of their action upon detonation. The following discussion deals with the behavior of the metal in the cavity liners when they are subjected to intense Pressures exerted when the explosive charge is detonated. Among the conclusions reached in research on shaped explosive charges, the following have been established conceming cavity liners:1'2 I. The optimum wall thickness of a conical cavity liner is dependent upon the apex angle of the cone as well as On the base diameter of the charge. Acute apex angles require thinner walls for optimum perfonnance and more obtuse angles require thicker walls for the same base diameter. '. Cones were more effective in forming a penetrating jet when the walls were tapered; that is, the thickness of the wall of the cone increased from the apex down. 3. The physical and mechanical properties of metals have a marked effect upon their performance as cavity-liner material. Boiling point, ductility, malleability, ten-sile strength, and hardness are among the properties that influence the effectiveness of a metal used as a cavity liner. Lead, for example, makes a wide, flat crater in steel plates. Aluminum makes a deeper crater than lead, and an aluminum alloy having a high tensile strength makes a deeper hole, but slightly smaller in diameter. Cast iron makes a deep, narrow hole. These findings, together with the following analysis under Metallographic Survey of slug, offer solutions to many of the problems involved in solving the mechanism of the formation of Munroe jets. It has been fairly well established that cavity liners collapse in a manner similar to that indicated in Fig 2, Conical liners are known to collapse upon themselves while hemispherical liners are believed to turn inside out in the process of jet formation. The first has been definitely proved by recovery of collapsed portions of cones, while liners from partly detonated charges show that hemispheres may turn inside out. Fig 3 shows a sketch of a recovered slug from a 6-in. shaped charge using a 45" cone made of cast iron. (This size of charge drilled holes up to 3 ft in depth in solid granodiorite.)

Activities of magnesium in liquid Mg-Sn alloys have been determined between 5 and 90 at. pct Sn and 990" and 1290°K by an improved isopiestic method wherein tin specimens, heated in a temperature gradient and contained in crucibles of special geometry, were equilibrated with magnesium vapor in a closed titanium system. The crucibles were designed so that the equilibrium compositions of the specimens were satisfactorily preserved on termination of the experimental runs by quenching. The activity values are in excellent agreement with those predicated on the phase diagram and allowed a delineation of the solidus curve of the compound Mg2Sn near its melting point. EQUATIONS have been recently derived relating the chemical potentials of the components to the liquidus and enthalpy data for binary systems exhibiting one congruently melting compound.' The liquidus curve of the Mg-Sn system between the eutectics was carefully redetermined and the thermodynamic properties thus calculated were in reasonably good agreement with values derived from electromotive-force measurements of an,' but differed greatly from the iso-piestically determined values of Ashtakala and Pid-geon.3 The present study was initiated: a) to resolve the discrepancies; b) to develop a method for measuring activities in systems having volatile (and possibly highly reactive) components; and c) to use the method in a general investigation of the thermodynamic properties of the homologous series of Mg-Group IVb systems, i.e., Mg-Pb, Mg-Sn, Mg-Ge, and Mg-Si. This paper describes the results for the Mg-Sn system. An isopiestic technique, originally developed by Herasymenko 4 and adapted for alloys having a component of high reactivity and low volatility,5-8 was modified in this study by using crucibles designed to preserve the equilibrium composition of highly volatile liquid specimens on quenching from high temperatures. Tin specimens, contained in tightly covered graphite crucibles and heated in a temperature gradient, were equilibrated with magnesium vapor of fixed pressure from a magnesium reservoir kept at constant temperature in a previously evacuated and sealed titanium tube. A FEW years ago a novel electric detonator known as the split-second or millisecond delay electric blasting cap was introduced for use in quarry blasting. Regular electric blasting caps fired in series may be depended upon to fire within a millisecond or so from the first to the last in a series. Regular delay electric blasting caps are provided that fire one period after the other period in intervals of 1/2 to possibly 1 l/2 sec. Most split-second or millisecond delays are designed to fire one period after the other period in possibly 25 to 50 millisecond intervals. The ear is not capable of detecting time intervals of this magnitude.

Although there is now an extensive literature on the bleaching clays, not a great deal of material is to be found concerning the geological features of these deposits and their bearing on problems of exploration and development. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when .subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomencelature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation.'" The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefor? is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines8' classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatment or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclaturc: of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respecbively, for the two types indicated.

MANY investigations have been made concerning the nature of plastic deformation and recrystallization of metals either in the form of polycrystalline materials or in the form of single crystals. However, similar work on strip materials composed of large grains as thick as the strip and having a high degree of preferred crystal orientation has not been carried out extensively. Such materials are ideal not only for studying changes in single crystals under conditions where neighboring grains exert their influences but also for obtaining the, complete change in orientation of a grain or group of grains during the course of plastic deformation and subsequent recrystallization. It is well known that first-order twins in the form of Neumann bands may be produced during the plastic deformation of ferrite crystals, particularly silicon ferrite crystals.1-3 Furthermore, it is believe that high-stress regions exist in the vicinity of these bands4a and it has been said that these banded regions would be active in recrystallization processes.5 Evidence to that effect in silicon ferrite had already been presented with photomicrographs showing recrystallization among Neumann bands during the early stages of recrystallization.5,6 Similar evidence has been published for nonferrous metals.5 Merging of fine parallel deformation bands during annealing to form twin bands of ordinary appearance in alpha brass has been offered not only as evidence of an active role being played by mechanical twins but also as evidence that such twins existed prior to recrystallization.5 Proof that such new structures are actually first-order twins, or even twins at all, must be considered inadequate except for those cases where X-ray or optical data have been obtained to confirm the necessary orientation relationship.7,8 A. B. Greninger has obtained excellent iliustrations of annealing twins in alpha irons Since his material was previously deformed by sharp hammering, a process that generally induces Neumann bands, the existence of twins following annealing might suggest that they grew from mechanical twins. In connection with transformation twins in alpha iron, Greninger reported that grains containing. three twin orientations occurred rarely and none occurred with three sets of well-developed bands.9 The work at the Pittsfield Works Laboratory on silicon ferrite in the form of large-grained strip steel deformed a small amount and annealed to partially recrystallize the grains indicates that the deformation and recrystallization processes that lead to annealing twins involve more complex processes than the formation of Neumann bands and the growth of such bands. Some groups of annealing twins are obtained which contain not only three well-developed twin structures, but also contain more than one order of twins. It is also shown, in one case, that an interrelated group of twins did not arise within one single parent grain and, furthermore, orientations of grains in the group

In a recent article,l which described the softening effect of columbium in plain high-chromium steels, the authors stated that their investigations had shown columbium to be also a particularly valuable inhibitor of intergranular corrosion in steels of the 18 per cent chromium, 8 per cent nickel type. It is the purpose of the present paper to record some of the results obtained through the introduction of columbium to the austenitic chromium-nickel steels. The damaging effects of this type of corrosion have become so widely known as to restrict considerably the applications of the steels under consideration, and therefore there is little question of the importance of the goal to be attained. Numerous contributions concerning the susceptibility of the austenitic chromium-nickel steels to intergranular corrosion have appeared during the past few years, and among others who have dealt constructively with the subject are such well-known authors as Strauss and Houdremont of Germany, Hatfield of England, and Bain in the United States. Different theories have been propounded as to the cause of intergranular corrosion, and various remedial measures have been proposed, the majority of which involve the use of addition agents. Titanium is the addition agent at present most generally employed, as suggested by Houdremont and modified as described by Bain, Aborn and Rutherford. Little has been published on the effects of holding these steels for long periods at the relatively lower temperatures in the presence of corroding media, and the effects have mot been fully realized by producer and consumer.

Industrial Minerals, often called the Cinderella Minerals or the Building Blocks of industry continued their growth patterns through 1973, although profits were slightly lower due to the cost-price squeeze. Most of the individual reports which follow indicate growth rates of 3-15%. Surprisingly such commodities as sulfur held firm in spite of the over supply in the Canadian gas fields; cement was in short supply while the asbestos industry reported a worldwide shortage of group 4 and 5 fibers. Talc and perlite production set new records. In synopsis, 1973 was a productive year for industrial minerals. However 1974 onward appears to be one of contradiction. The unsettled conditions of world economics, the energy shortage, compounded by the Arabs oil embargo have created great problems for all industries. The high energy consuming segments of the Industrial Minerals field will be under intense pressures. On the other hand limestone, lime and perhaps trona, nahcolite might be consumed in ever increasing tonnages in SO2 removal systems connected with smelters and coal-fired power stations. The effects of the proposed changes in the staking, claiming and exploitation of federal lands by the BLM may also have serious repercussions not only to the industrial minerals field but to the entire mining industry. 1974-1975 will certainly be ear-marked as a year of frustrations and difficult decisions.

Two papers have been written previously concerning operations at the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The first one,' written in 1932, described silver-refinery operations at the time for producing silver and gold bullion from tankhouse anode slimes; the second,2 published in 1933, consisted of a description of the entire plant. Since publication of these papers the refinery has become the world's largest producer of refined selenium. The first selenium was produced in August 1934. Blister cakes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Flin Flon, Manitoba, and commercial anodes from Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, are refined at Montreal East. Both these bullions have unusually high gold, selenium and tellurium content. The average assay of raw slimes produced from domestic and Noranda anodes is about 40 per cent Cu, 3600 oz. per ton Ag, 800 oz. per ton Au, 22 per cent Se and 3.7 per cent Te. Early Silver-refinery Operations From the start of operations in 1931 until July 1934, the raw slimes were oxidize-roasted at 700" I?. in a Nichols-Herreshoff furnace, acid-leached with tankhouse discarded foul electrolyte (20 per cent H²SO), filtered and charged directly to the doré furnace for refining to doré meta1. This is the customary method for treating tankhouse anode slimes but was not suitable at the Montreal East plant because of the high selenium and tellurium content of our slimes. In the acid-leaching process about 50 per cent of the selenium and tellurium in the roasted slimes was dissolved in the electrolyte. Two papers have been written previously concerning operations at the Montreal East plant of Canadian Copper Refiners Limited. The first one,' written in 1932, described silver-refinery operations at the time for producing silver and gold bullion from tankhouse anode slimes; the second,2 published in 1933, consisted of a description of the entire plant. Since publication of these papers the refinery has become the world's largest producer of refined selenium. The first selenium was produced in August 1934. The Pao deposits of iron ore are in the State of Bolivar, Venezuela, near Upata, about 30 miles south of the Orinoco River and 90 miles east of Ciudad Bolivar. They were discovered 4 or 5 years ago and have not yet been developed to the stage of mining. In March-April, 1929, the writer devoted a week to the examination of these deposits. The maps, drill records and chemical analyses presented herewith were derived from original sources, and the field photographs were made by the writer. The petrographic and metallographic data are from notes by C. S. Ross and M. N. Short, of the U. S. Geological Survey, who have kindly collaborated in these special phases of the study. The Iron Obebodies Topography and Accessibility The deposits are in a region of low mountains representing northern outliers of the Guayanan Highlands. These mountains reach altitudes of 1800 to more than 2000 ft. above sea level, as determined by aneroid barometer. The iron ore is found on mountain crests that reach altitudes of 1915 to 1930 ft., and may be followed down precipitous slopes for 200 • to 300 ft. or more. The greatest vertical range in outcrop is nearly 400 ft., and drilling has indicated that the ore extends to this depth below the surface in one place, at least. The superior hardness of the iron ore accounts for the preservation of the local mountain crests with the intermediate valleys eroded in softer granitic rock. The deposits of iron ore are reached by a private road for automobiles branching northeast from the Ciudad Bolivar-Upata road, a distance of about 12 miles. This road was used in 1928-29 by trucks for transportation of food and camp supplies, gasoline, drilling equipment, etc., but was not suitable for the transportation of iron ore. Between Ciudad Bolivar and the iron-ore area the western two-thirds of the automobile road passes through nearly level, open country known as the savanna, largely used for grazing cattle. IN the United States, improvements in methods of combustion have made possible the use of the smaller sizes of anthracite. This coal is now being reclaimed from the culm banks accumulated by the miners in the more prodigal years. To-day the freshly mined "slush" is segre¬gated and stored against the time when, through briquetting or some other means, it may be utilized as a commercial fuel. For many years Europe has achieved enviable results in the conservation of her small coal by briquetting. This profitable industry, first placed on a commercial basis in France in 1842, has grown to such magnitude that the "'production during 1913 exceeded 36,000,000 short tons. Briquets produced in Great Britain are used principally for steam purposes and the greater part of the output is either exported or taken by the Admiralty. On the Continent the briquets are sold in all branches of the coal trade. The French railways consume from 16 to 40 per cent. of their fuel in briquet form, and in Germany the lignite briquets, (of which 20,000,000 tons were produced in 1913) are as familiar and interesting to the American traveler as the huge porcelain stoves in which they are burned. It is not strange, therefore, that aggressive and far-sighted promotors heralded this means of converting our ubiquitous coal waste into revenue. To the superficial student the briquetting process seemed so simple as to make success easy. It is for this reason principally that the path of the industry in America has been strewn with failures. The rash enthusiast had either not worked out the mechanical problems involved or had failed to grasp the local conditions under which the briquets must be made and sold. It may be confidently stated, however, that in spite of the many vicissitudes through which it has passed, coal briquetting is now an accomplished economic success in this country, and as a profitable adjunct to the coal industry it has come to stay.
