IN the course of the past few years the authors and their associates have had different opportunities to study the electrical phenomena which accompany the oxidation of pipe lines. The causes of such phenomena are very similar to those which have been described under the name "spontaneous polarization" with reference to metallic orebodies,1 and can be investigated in the same manner. These investigations, however, until recently were of a scientific and theoretical character, and had not found any important practical application. During the year 1931, however, the authors treated several industrial corrosion problems for public utility companies. These problems usually had to be studied in towns or in densely populated areas, where it was well-nigh impossible, or very expensive, to dig pits and trenches in order to make electrical measurements on the pipe itself. The authors were thus led to evolve a method and apparatus permitting the study, from the surface, of the direction of the currents flowing from pipe lines. The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the results obtained in the course of these investigations. However, in consideration of the importance and interest of the work carried out by other scientists along the same lines, a separate chapter will be devoted to a summary of the results achieved up to the present time in the study of pipe line corrosion.

INTRODUCTION OF FROTH FLOTATION INTO THE UNITED STATES "The introduction and development of the flotation process have proved to be of such momentous importance to the mining industry of the United States that they deserve to be considered historically ." T. A. Rickard l James M. Hyde installed the first froth flotation process in the U. S., about Aug. 1, 1911, at the Basin Reduction Co. plant, Basin, Mont., which was then under lease to the Butte and Superior Copper Co.2 Two months later, the Minerals Separation Ltd.. filed suit in the U. S. District Court of Montana against Mr. Hyde char& him with infringement of their Patent 835, 120/1906. The U. S. District Court decided in favor of Minerals Separation Ltd. on July 28, 1913. This decision was reversed by the Ninth Court of Appeals in San Francisco on May 4, 1914. Then the U. S. Supreme Court, on Dec. 11, 1916, upheld the patent on three counts only but restricted it to 'the use of less than one percent of oil.” The Miami Copper Co. was sued by Minerals Separation on Oct. 10, 1914, for infringement of Patents 835,120 and 962,678, and 1,099,699. The Miami Copper Co. was operating under John M. Callow's froth flotation process Patent 1,104,755/~uly 23, 1914. Miami lost this suit in the District Court of Wilmington, Del., and appealed to the Court of Appeals, Third Circuit, Philadelphia. The Third Court of Appeals decided against Miami, May 24, 1917. The case was referred to a Master and hearings to determine profit and damages were not settled until 1923. Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. was sued Sept. 9, 1919, and Magma Copper Co. was sued Jan. 10, 1920. Thus, the first ten years of froth flotation in the U. S. were beset by patent litigation. This litigation suppressed the free circulation of new discoveries or useful information that might be cited in a patent suit against the originator; it accounts for many of the blank spaces in the historical record. T. A. Rickard3 has reviewed the history of flotation and has given the chain of discoveries, patents, and processes that resulted in froth flotation. After the close of the Revolution, settlers began to pour over the mountains, to settle in the western parts of Pennsylvania, of Virginia, to move down the Ohio into Kentucky, and in the late seventeen-eighties to settle on "the Indian side" of the river, now Ohio. With the growth of population the interest in coal increased and it was not long before the production of coal west of the mountains was larger than that east of them. Foreign nations, too, became interested in the young republic and in 1783, at the instance of the Swedish government S. A. Hermelin, an engineer, visited this country to investigate its iron industry. He made a very interesting report, not published until 1931, in which he gave many details of the iron plants in the eastern United States; apparently he was not west of the mountains, but was well informed about conditions there. He says, "that some coal near the first branches of the Schuylkill River has been mined and utilized by the blacksmiths," referring, of course, to anthracite; again that "coal mines have also been worked for several years near Pittsburg," and that "great supplies of iron ore are available at the Ohio Falls and further to the west, at Coney Creek, a part of the Green River, where there is also coal."' In 1788, Dr. Johann David Schoepf, who came to this country with the Hessian troops, visited Pittsburgh. He was an intelligent man and acquainted to some extent with minerals and methods of working them. IN 1922 Morey made a series of experiments in which he observed the cooling of a molten system containing H20, 9.1 per cent; K20, 17.3 per cent and Si02, 73.6 per cent. This system was confined in a bomb; it was fluid at 500° C. and exerted no vapor pressure. In cooling to 420° C. a large part of it crystallized and at that temperature much of the water had separated from the crystals and remained as steam, which built up a pressure of 4998 lb. per sq. in., a force sufficient to lift nearly one mile of granite.1 If granite, cooling at 600°, expels vapor in the process of crystalliza-tion it is reasonable to suppose that a considerably greater vapor pressure would result, and it is thought that the vapor expelled from crystallizing granitic batholiths probably has a pressure sufficient to lift two or three miles of granite. This vapor, collecting near the tops of cupolas of batholiths, is believed to exert sufficient pressure to fracture the hoods and roofs of batholiths above the cupolas. If that is true, one would expect to find that the fracture systems above cupolas are arranged in patterns that depend in part on the shapes of the cupolas. The mechanics of the situation seem to require that conical cupolas should have radial fracture patterns, that bluntly rounded cupolas should have fracture systems that are either irregular or rudely conjugated in plan, and that elongated stocks or cupolas should have fracture systems in which the fractures lie nearly parallel to the direction of the elongation of the cupolas.

MoRe than two years ago, in making efficiency tests on our hot-blast stoves, I was surprised to discover a marked difference in temperature as indicated by a pyrometer inserted near a stove on blast, and the regular recording instrument situated near the bustle pipe. A special hole was then provided at the junction of the hot-blast main and the bustle pipe, and portable pyrometers with bare fire ends were used, both at this point and in the stove necks. I had occasion to make a number of such tests on various stoves on the same, furnace, the difference in temperature as shown by the two pyrometers varying chiefly with the temperature of the blast, and the distance of the stove from the furnace. However, this difference was always great, often averaging above 100" F., for the entire period of a stove on blast. Later, experiments were made with similar results on another group of stoves. The pyrometers used were properly standardized and checked against each other before and after each test. However, there was still a slight doubt as to the accuracy of the results obtained, as subsequently explained. But I have obtained corroboration of the magnitude of heat losses from blast-furnace hot-blast mains from two independent sources. I have learned from H. A. Brassert, Superintendent of Blast Furnaces, South Works, Illinois Steel Co., that he has recently done some experimental work similar to my own, and found temperature drops of the same order of magnitude. Also, C.,R. Lyle, of the Armstrong Cork Co., has made some interesting theoretical calculations, based on the thermal conductivity of fire brick, for the particular conditions of several of our tests; and his theoretical interpolations, all facts being considered, check our actual observations fairly well. I understand that Mr. Lyle expects to publish the results of his investigations. The old Telegraph mine lies on both sides of Bear gulch, a short branch of Upper Bingham canon, and nearly in the center of the group of mines called the Bingham Mines, about twenty-seven miles southwest of Salt Lake City. It is considered, by local miners as the most important mine of the district. The geological formation consists of Weber quartzites, with subordinate conformable limestones and shales, alternating with porphyritic rocks. These widen towards and connect with the massive backbone of the Oquirrh mountains, while the quartzite develops itself on the slope broken through by Bingham canon. The porphyry not only runs between the strata, but also cuts across them, isolating large portions near the mountain mass, and again on a smaller scale it penetrates some joints in the quartzite. It is a crystalline felspathic rock, containing variable proportions of quartz, mica, hornblende, chlorite, and iron pyrites as accessories. In places, it takes a less distinct or almost uniform fine-grained structure. It has a gray or greenish, and, when much altered, also a reddish or even white color. The quartzite is a fine-grained or almost compact grayish-white or bluish or reddish quartz-rock, containing in places fine scales of mica and grains of iron pyrites as accessories. The raised, folded, or broken masses show well-defined bedding-joints, and their general dip is 35 to 50 degrees towards north or northwest. In the porphyry occur metalliferous veins with a prevailing N.E.S.W. strike. These are in general narrow veins; their principal contents are not dissimilar from those of the other deposits; but there is considerably less oxidation near the surface and the ore is mostly richer in silver and gold. In the quartzite the ore-deposits generally occur on the joints of bedding. The more important deposits occur either in clearlydefined contact-veins or, more often, in somewhat vaguely-defined mineralized zones, that could be called contact-zones. These comprise several masses of more or less altered or decomposed rocks and the newly-distributed products of their mechanical and chemical decomposition, such as breccia and clay in seams or in more irregular bodies..

The operating experience to date with long distance iron concentrate slurry pipelines at Savage River, in Tasmania, Australia, and Peña Colorada, in Colima, Mex., is discussed. The three pipeline systems currently under construction in Central and South America are described with particular emphasis on the SAMARCO system in Brazil, which will be the world's largest upon completion. General considerations for the technical, environmental, and economic feasibility of the slurry pipeline approach to solids transport are discussed with reference to alternative modes of bulk transport. A case study for the Lake Superior Dist. is presented.

DRAINAGE of acid mine water into surface streams of coal mining areas is one of the most serious problems of stream pollution, since there is no known method that completely prevents its forming and no economically feasible treatment after it has formed. The mine acid problem differs from other pollution hazards because acid production does not end with cessation of mining but actually becomes more evident when pumping is stopped. The acid problem in the Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky bituminous coal areas of the U. S. began with the first operation in 1761, and the volume of acid discharge today is largely the cumulative result of years of mining. Provided they lie above the drainage area, the oldest mines, now long abandoned, are almost without exception producing acid in the same manner as those now operating or recently abandoned. Abstract-This paper describes the analytical characteristics of Western subbituminous coal and the manner in which these characteristics apply to their use in a utility-sized steam generator. It compares these characteristics with those of typical Midwestern coal and Eastern bituminous coal. The paper also reviews in detail the design considerations that must receive attention when various blends of these three coals, or any combinations thereof, are planned to be used. This research paper describes variations in analytical and utilization characteristics when coals from different origins are blended in order to achieve a predetermined sulfur content for the purpose of predicting sulfur oxides emissions as they affect environmental regulations and the resulting alterations in utilization characteristics such blending would cause, and how such blends of coal would affect a utility-sized steam generator.

The ores of the Butte district present a variety of combinations, and their treatment by concentration is an interesting study. They may be classified in general as follows: 1. Copper-silver ores, which are produced by the mines of the Anaconda group, and by the Mountain View, Colusa, Silver Bow and Parrot. The high-grade ores from these properties are roasted and then smelted; but a large proportion of the output is low-grade and siliceous, and hence requires concentration. The copper-bearing minerals are chalcocite, bornite, enargite and chalcopyrite, in varying proportions in the different mines, the gangue, which breaks readily into grains, being quartz and feldspar. 2. Silver-copper ores, of which the Gagnon vein is the largest producer. The grade of the ores from this mine is such that nine-tenths of the output requires concentration. The silver- and copper-bearing minerals of this vein are massive wurtzite, sphalerite, bornite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, tetrahedrite, enargite, tennantite and galenite, with a quartz gangue associated with feldspar and small quantities of barite and fluorite. The gangue is very hard and not at all granular. 3. Silver-ores containing a small amount of gold, embracing the product of the Alice, Magna Charta and Moulton claims, on what is known as the Rainbow lode, and that of the Lexington, Blue Bird, Nettie, Burlington and other mines. The gangue is quartz, carrying pyrite, sphalerite, galenite, tetrahedrite and argentite, with manganese in the form of rhodochrosite and rhodonite. Good results on ores of this class cannot be obtained by concentration, because large percentages of the silver-bearing minerals are disseminated through the gangue in such minute grains that even the finest practicable crushing

THE practice of dentistry, particularly the construction of artificial dentures and "bridges," involves a unique and difficult application of the precious-metal alloys. Appliances used in the mouth are continuously exposed to corrosive agencies which can hardly be described as mild, and must remain free from tarnish and be substantially immune to corrosion. Limitations with respect to space and weight demand high physical properties, while complexity of form requires ease of working. The high corrosion resistance required necessitates the use of alloys of high precious metal content. The usual expedient of resorting to mechanical working to produce the requisite strength and stiffness cannot be utilized because of the frequency of annealing and soldering operations. To meet these difficult conditions manufacturers of dental goods were early led, unknowingly perhaps, to the production of precipitation-hardening or temperable alloys. The excellent properties of iridium-platinum may have suggested the addition of platinum metals to the conventional gold-silver-copper alloys to produce greater strength and hardness. It was found that such quarternary alloys retained their high physical properties after passing through the usual soldering process; i, e., heating to 7500 to 8000 C. and cooling naturally in the air. Later it was discovered that they could be softened and rendered more ductile by heating to the same temperature and quenching, in water. These early examples of precipitation hardening, for years the common knowledge, of dental practitioners and laboratory technicians, escaped the attention of the scientific world and discovery of the transformation which was responsible for this hardening was discovered by the Russian investigators of the system Au-Cu, Kurnakow, Schemtschushny and Zasedatelev,(1) § although the optimum conditions for securing good properties in aged alloys were not given attention.

A study was made of the effects of small quantities of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of colum-bium. Tensile specimens, hydrogenated to concentrations of 20 to 200 ppm, were tested at temperatures of 300°, 191°, and 77°K. Although hydrogen was found to have little effect on the strength of columbium, the ductility of Cb-H alloys was found to be quite sensitive to both hydrogen concentration and temperature. At 300°K, an abrupt loss in ductility occurred at a critical hydrogen concentration, although some ductility was observed beyond the tolerance limit. A similar result was found at a lower hydrogen concentration at 191°K. At 77°K, however, a more gradual loss in ductility with increasing hydrogen concentration was observed. Hydrogenated columbium was thus observed to undergo a ductile-brittle-ductile transition. Metallographic examination of fractured specimens revealed extensive porosity at both 77° and300°K which was a distinct function of hydrogen content. At 191°K, although some secondary cracking was noted, the amount of observed porosity was minimal. These observations are interpreted in terms of hydrogen solubility and mobility as a function of temperature and in the role of hydrogen in promoting growth of microcracks. lHE effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of the refractory metals is not, at present, completely understood. A number of studies have shown these materials to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Roberts and Rogers1 have found that vanadium can be embrittled by hydrogen. It was further demonstrated that fracture undergoes a ductile-brittle-ductile transition as the temperature is lowered from 150° to -196°C; i.e., there is a ductility minimum observed at a certain temperature. The ductility is increased by either raising or lowering the temperature from this point. A more complete study by Eustice and Carlson2 on vanadium containing 10 to 800 ppm placed the ductility minimum at about -100°C with variations reportedly due to hydrogen content and strain rate. Ductility minima have also been found at certain temperatures for tantalum containing 7 ppm H3 and 140 ppm H.4 At hydrogen concentrations above 270 ppm, however, the ductility return at low temperatures was considerably reduced.4 In the case of columbium, some disagreement exists in the literature. Eustice and Carlson,5 Wilcox et al.,6 and Imgram et al.4 failed to find a ductility minimum although a composition-dependent ductile-brittle transition was observed. Hydrogen concentrations in these investigations were 20 ppm,5 1 to 30 ppm,6 and 200 to 390 ppm.4 However, Wood and Daniels7 observed a rather pronounced ductility minimum at hydrogen contents ranging from 19 to 252 ppm. Those theories of hydrogen embrittlement involving the precipitation of diatomic hydrogen which have been applies to ferrous metals8-12 do not seem to be applicable to the case of columbium and other exothermic occluders. Such theories propose that extensive crack formation and propagation occurs by the precipitation and expansion of diatomic hydrogen at internal voids and microcracks. However, photomicrographs of hydrogenated columbium do not show any evidence of damage introduced by the sorption and precipitation of diatomic hydrogen; rather, at high hydrogen concentrations, a hydrogen-rich second phase is precipitated.13'14 In addition, a number of these theories require the development of high hydrogen pressures at voids in the structure.8'10'12 This does not appear to be feasible in the concentration ranges discussed in the aforementioned paragraphs. The possible interaction of atomic hydrogen with microcracks resulting from dislocation pile-ups15,16 remains in doubt since pile-ups have not been observed in bcc metals17 including columbium.18 Wood and Daniels7 have put forth the possibility that a hydride precipitation could be responsible for crack nucleation in columbium. Work by Longson19 has shown that hydrogen embrittlement of columbium parallels the bulk solubility limit; i.e., as the solubility increases, for instance with temperature, the amount of hydrogen necessary to cause embrittlement also increases. Although a hydride precipitation appears attractive as a means of nucleating microcracks in columbium, what require more intensive study are the low-temperature anomalies which have been observed, i.e., the ductile-brittle-d'ictile transition characteristics. Also, the hydrogen concentrations where embrittlement occurs are often below the bulk solubility limits determined by Albrecht et al.13,14 and Walter and Chandler.20 This work is an attempt to determine more definitively the effects of concentration and temperature on the mechanical properties of dilute Cb-H alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Ultrahigh-purity columbium rods, obtained from the Wah Chang Corp., were cold-reduced by rotary swaging. A chemical analysis is given in Table I. The material was cut into cylindrical blanks 1.50 ±0.005 in. long. Individual specimens were either given a stress relief anneal at 750°C or recrystal-lized at 1200°C. Resulting microstructures were either a "bamboo" structure characteristic of a wrought material or a recrystallized structure with a grain diameter of approximately 100 n. All heat treatments were carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr or less.

BY surface treatment of coal is meant the application of a material, either solid or liquid, to the surface of pieces of coal. The purposes of surface treatment are varied. They may be to identify or "trade- mark" the coal, to modify the burning characteristics, the coking tendencies, or the behavior of the ash, to prevent the freezing of wet coal, or to control the dust. The control of dust is the usual purpose of surface treatment. TRADE-MARKING COAL The application of color to the surface of coal for the purpose of identification and registration of the trade-mark has been practiced to some extent. In 1928, the Glen Alden Coal Co. began to color its coal and adopted the trade-mark, "Blue Coal." The Old Ben Coal Co. later followed a similar practice with "Green Coal." A commoner means of identification of coal has been the stenciling of designs or pasting labels on large lumps or in the distribution of small cardboard tags through the smaller sizes. The details of the method used to color coal have not been revealed. Usually all of the coal is not treated, because of the expense. Only enough pieces are colored to show clearly when distributed through the coal. The patent literature gives information on some of the methods proposed. Esselen and Weiss have patented the deposition of a coloring material in the valleys of the surface of the coal. Sperr covers the quenching of coke with water containing a pigment or dye that will deposit on the coke. He also suggests electroplating with copper or nickel. Glinsmann subjects the freshly fractured coal surface to the action of an alkali or alkali earth ferricyanide and a ferric salt. Barsky and Hanson specify a method for the application of the same chemicals covered by Glinsmann. COATINGS FOR IMPROVEMENT OF APPEARANCE As a purchaser often judges coal by its appearance, modification of the surface has been attempted from time to time, particularly of the surface of outcrop or stored coal, which has become covered with a brown film of iron oxides, but information is lacking as to the extent or success of the

The Petch relation between the flow stress and the gain size is derived from a consideration of gain boundary sources of dislocations without the need of dislocation Pile-ups. Three mechanisms for inierpreting the yield stress: the gain boundary strength, the unpinning of Frank-Read source near a grain boundary, and the generation of dislocations from the grain boundary are compared and the condition of their equivalence is shown. The effect of the average angle of misfit of pain boundaries is found to be sma11 and so is that of the average angle of misfit of subboundaries having impurities. The effect of impurities on the ledge density in the grain boundary is treated thermodynamically and a relatwn is proposed for the variation of Petch slope with impurity activity. The effect of temperature on the Petch slope is interpreted as due to the change of ledge structure in the grain boundary. It is indicated that the effect of annealing temperature may be more important than that of the test temperature and therefore should be studied. The effect of plastic strain on the Petch analysis is deduced from a work-hardening equation in which the generation of dislocations has first-order kinetics and the annihilation of dislocations has second-order kinetics. It is concluded that the Petch slope will decrease with plustic strain if the rate of annihilation of dislocations is sufficiently large. Critical experiments which may shed light on the mechanism for the Petch relation are suggested. THE relation between the yield or flow stress, 0, and the grain size, l, was first proposed by all' and later studied more extensively by Petch and co-workers, who also proposed a similar relation for the fracture stress and deduced from these a grain-size effect of the ductile-brittle transition temperature. The microscopic mechanism used by all' and petch2 involves a pile-up of dislocations of like sign generated from a Frank-Read source. The yielding or flow takes place when the pile-up exerts sufficient stress at the grain boundary so that the plastic deformation can propagate from one grain to another. If the average strength of the grain boundary is ai and the average length of the pileup is lp, the Petch slope, k, is given by" where p is the shear modulus, b the Burgers vector, and v the Poisson ratio. This slope will be independent of the grain size if l/lp is a constant. This is possible, since, if the Frank-Reed source is situated near the grain boundary, lp = 1, and if it is situated in the middle of the grain, Ip = 1/2. cottrell,12 also using the pile-up mechanism, proposed that the stress concentration at the grain boundary will initiate Frank-Read sources near the grain boundary and in this manner a Lüders band can propagate from one grain to another. Assuming that the average distance between the Frank-Read sources and the grain boundary is 1, and the unpinning stress of the Frank-Read sources is op, Cottrell obtained the following Petch slope: This slope will be independent of the grain size if ls is independent of the same, which is not as obvious as the condition, Ip = I for Eq. [2]. In addition to this assumption, the direct relation between the Petch slope k and the unpinning stress, up, was recently questioned by Johnsonon grounds that it is inconsistent with the following observations: the independence of k with temperature and strain rate, and the small k in columbium, which, like iron, has a sharp yield point. As pointed out by ohnson," the most important objection both to the Hall-Petch mechanism, in which the strength of the grain boundary plays the role in yielding, and to the Cottrell mechanism, in which the unpinning of Frank-Read sources plays the role in yielding, is the lack of direct observation of the pile-ups. The dislocation structure in deformed iron has been examined recently in the electron microsope.'-' Dislocations appear to be generated from grain boundaries or other interfaces; they form clusters and tangles within the grain at very early stages of deformation, even in the Lüders band, if the deformation is slow or at normal and elevated temperatures. Although it is still too early to interpret bulk properties from thin-film observations, it does seem worthwhile to look for a mechanism for the Petch relation which does not require dislocation pileup. Many mineral veins occupy faults, and movements on certain warped fault planes have resulted in openings. On normal faults the steeper parts have the widest openings, and on reverse faults the flatter parts have the widest openings. Theoretically the width of the opening is the sine of the angle of deflection times the amount of movement on the fault plane, but actually the widths of some of the openings are probably less because of readjustments of walls along joints or of other readjustments. The first treatment of the subject seems to have been in a book on mineral veins by John Leithart, published in Newcastle, England, in 1838. Later the subject was treated in various texts published in Germany, in England, and elsewhere. The subject was not given much prominence in the earlier American literature on economic geology, but has interested several workers in that field in the past decade. In this paper examples of districts showing ore shoots on warped faults, with relations noted, are described. Fault veins of the three depth classes of veins are noted. Many epithermal veins are in normal faults, and commonly the larger ore shoots are in their steeper portions. Many mesothermal veins are in reverse faults and, many others are in normal faults. The flatter parts of veins in reverse faults are commonly wider than the steeper parts, although they are not always as rich as the steeper segments of the veins. There are not many hypothermal veins in faults of measured displacement. Introduction When faults are followed along dip or strike, many of them are found to have curving or warped surfaces, and cross sections through them in most directions show sinuous or waving intersections. THE chemical and physical properties of slag systems are of special interest to metallurgists, for nearly all metals are in contact with molten slags during the primary reduction from their ores and then during the subsequent refining and alloying processes that determine their ultimate use, These processes are carried out at high temperatures and involve such complex chemical systems that fundamental scientific knowledge of the properties and behavior of these slags is inadequate. Various hypotheses have been proposed to explain known slag characteristics. The commonest of these regard the molten slag as constituted of compounds that are dissociated in varying degrees into their constituent oxides, as illustrated by Schenck1 and the recent papers of Chipman and co-authors.2-5 Another proposal is that these compounds dissociate by completes or partial ionization, the evidence for which has been reviewed by Martin and Derge.7 Whatever hypothesis is favored, the exact formulation of these compounds is incomplete. It is based on three principal types of information: I, Studies of solidified slag samples by X-ray diffraction, petrography, and similar methods that can be used at room temperature, The correlation of this information with the high-temperature properties of the molten slag is uncertain, 2. Studies of slag-metal equilibria, which have the advantage of providing observations on the molten slag at high temperature, However, even these data present problems of interpretation because they require a complete knowledge of the metal phase, 3, Direct measurements of properties of molten slag at the temperature of greatest metallurgical interest. Viscosity, electrical conductivity, specific heats, and similar properties have been measured, but the data of this type are widely scattered and frequently difficult to interpret, Additional direct measurements of properties of molten slag that can be interpreted in terms of chemical behavior are required, and this paper shows that the standard physical-chemical measurement of reversible electrode potentials, which measure the activity of specific constituents, is a fruitful source of such information, The purpose of this investigation, therefore, was to find an electrode combination that would yield reversible electromotive force measurements when dipped into the molten slag to be studied. THE properties required of gold alloys for jewelry are not well standardized, due in part to problems peculiar to certain branches of the jewelry industry, in part to the individual preference of the fabricator and to his willingness to cope with certain difficulties in manufacture, which arise with the use of certain alloys. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS In general, the properties desired may be classed as follows: 1. Color should conform to the dictates of good taste and smart style. 2. Corrosion resistance and tarnish resistance should be good. This is to a considerable extent determined by the carat. Resistance to such corrosive agents as mercuric chloride as well as certain depilatories is unreasonable to expect and difficult to meet. 3. Strength and hardness must be adequate to maintain the delicate contours of finely modeled jewelry. 4. Wear resistance must be great enough to resist abnormal wear, such as is encountered by a wedding ring in a lifetime of wear. 5. Ductility must be sufficient to permit the fabrication of drawn shells, tubes and difficult shapes. Material having a yield point of not less than 60,000 lb. per sq. in., an ultimate strength of 100,000 lb. per sq. in., and an elongation of 40 per cent. is desirable. 6. Melting point should be between 800° and 1200° C.

This paper deals with recent geologic studies in the slate belt of Northampton, Lehigh and Berks counties, Pennsylvania. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Topographic and Geologic Survey. Three years have now been spent in detailed consideration of the economic geology of this region. In the field, particular attention was paid to the bearing of geology on quarry development and property valuation and the object of this paper is to summarize the results from that viewpoint. Excellent studies of a somewhat similar nature have already been carried out by Bowles,' but with the emphasis upon the details of quarrying and fabricating methods, rather than upon the geologic relations. The Northampton-Lehigh-BeRks District Location The region here discussed lies in east-central Pennsylvania and extends southwestward from Delaware River, on the New Jersey line, to the Schuylkill in north-central Berks County. It is an elongated belt occupying the northern sections of the three counties mentioned and lying along the southern edge of Blue Mountain. Its length is about 50 miles and its average width five or six, though in places it attains a maximum of 10 miles. There are no large cities in the region, but about 10 miles south are Reading, Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. Railroads serving the slate belt are the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, and the Pennsylvania along the Delaware River, the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey along the Lehigh, and the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia and Reading on the Schuylkill. In addition, two railroads—the Philadelphia and Reading and the Lehigh and New England—cut obliquely through the slate region to reach the more isolated communities. Transportation facilities are thus excellent. The slate deposits of these three counties are conspicuously unified, both economically and geologically. In general type of marketable
