The Duwez technique of splat cooling in which a molten droplet of metal is accelerated and made to impact on a cold, highly conducting substrate was investigated.- An apparatus for producing "splat" was constructed employing an explosive powder charge to accelerate the molten metal. Transport of the molten metal just prior to impact with the substrate was studied by means of high-speed photography. The molten particles are small spherical droplets from about 1 to 50 µ diameter. The average cooling rates for aluminum, silver, and a gold alloy splatted on nickel substrates at room temperature were determined experimentally and were found to vary from 18 to 5 x 10' C per sec. The heat-transfer coeficients for pure aluminum and pure silver splats cooled on nickel substrates at room temperature were found to be 2.7 to 6.8 and 13.6 to 54.2 cal per sec sq cm 'C (2 to 5 x 104 and 1 to 4 x 18 Btu per hr sq ft OF), respectively. Solidification rates in pure aluminum and silver splats were calculated. "SPLAT cooling" is a term describing a technique for extremely rapid freezing and cooling of molten metals and alloys to room temperature or below. The technique was developed by Duwez et al.' in 1960, and after refinement2 consisted in transferring a few tenths of a gram of molten metal to near sonic velocity to strike a suitably placed cold copper surface. Upon impact, the metal spread into a thin nonuniform film called a splat, about 10-4 cm thick. The splat particles produced in this manner were thin enough in some areas to be suitable for transmission electron microscopy, without further treatment, and, together with X-ray data, yielded a variety of structures which would be classified as follows: 1) supersaturated solid solutions (increase in solubility limit), 2) metastable crystalline stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric intermediate phases ( in Au-20.5 at. pct Si and in Au-14 at. pct Sb, respectively), 3) amorphous alloys, 4) retained high-temperature phases, 5) alloys having equilibrium phases present, but with unusual, markedly altered structures. The crystalline phases present in splats were usually extremely fine-grained and had low dislocation densities. Present interest in splat cooling centers around a study of the unusual structures produced by the technique, their contribution to alloy theory, and the possibility of the development of new or unusual properties. In addition, the technique is being examined for the production of bulk quantities of new high-strength alloys for low- and high-temperature use. Although a number of alloy systems have already been investigated by the technique, relatively little is known about the mechanism of splat formation and the physical conditions encountered by the metal during solidification and cooling. The purpose of this work was: 1) to determine the velocity, shape, and size of the molten metal droplets just prior to impact with the cold substrate; 2) to try to estimate or measure solidification rates, heat-transfer coefficients, and cooling rates in splats. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Splatting Apparatus and Procedure. An apparatus similar to the type originated by Duwez et a1.,2 but employing an explosive charge to accelerate the molten metal, was used. A "Ramset" fastening tool (a gun normally used for driving studs into concrete, steel, and so forth) was mounted vertically above a resistance-heated graphite crucible as shown schematically in Fig. 1. A splat product was produced by melting a few tenths of a gram of metal at the position shown in Fig. 1, and then exploding a powder charge in the breach. The shock wave thus generated traveled down the barrel into the furnace, ejecting the molten metal through the 0.06-in.-diameter hole at the bottom of the crucible. The ejected metal was impacted on a high-conductivity metallic substrate where it formed a splat. High-Speed silhouette Photography. In order to investigate the size and shape of the ejected, molten metal just prior to impact with the cold substrate, high-speed silhouette photographs were taken, and are shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These photographs were obtained with the aid of an Edger-ton, Germeshausen, and Grier microflash unit and a submicrosecond flash drive equipped with a variable time delay. Two types of triggers were

The solubility of nilrogen in liquid binary alloys of iron with Litanium. zivconium, columbium, vanndiurn, and tantalum was measured for alloy composiLions up to the solalbility limils of lhe alloy nitrides. All five alloying agents were found to decrease markedly the activity coefficient of nitrogen in liquid ivon. The metal/nitvogen mole ralios in the alloy nitrides formed were generally .found to be slighlly greater than 1.0, but in no case greater than 1.5. From the experimental data, the standard free energies of fortmation of titanium and zir-conium nitrides have been calculated for the Lemperaluve range 1550° to 1750 C. The solublily Products for columbium, tantalum, and vanadium nitrides are also reported. A number of research investigations have examined the effect of refractory metals on the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. Although data on zirconium are not available, investigators are in agreement that titanium, vanadium, columbium, and tantalum markedly increase the solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron. This fact alone makes desirable the acquisition of thermodynamic data for these elements in liquid iron. Since refractory metals are known to be stable nitride formers, they have been suggested as steel denitrifying agents, and some of their nitrides have recently been considered as containment materials for liquid iron and iron alloys. Most available thermodynamic data for these metals relate to their dilute concentrations, but effective thermodynamic treatment of these applications requires data at concentrations near the solubility limit of the alloy nitride. Although some work has been done at relatively high alloy concentrations in liquid iron (particularly for vanadium 2,3 and titanium 2,4), the results have been somewhat contradictory. Disagreement may be partly attributed to the fact that the compositions of most refractory metal nitrides have been shown to be nonstoichiometric, and to vary 2,5-8 depending on the temperature and nitrogen gas pressure with which the solid nitride phase is in equilibrium. One purpose of this study consequently has been to determine the compositions of the refractory metal nitrides precipitated from a liquid iron solution. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Rao and Parlee2 and Evans and Pehlke 9 have discussed the technique for measuring the solubility product of an alloy nitride phase in liquid iron by finding the point of departure of the nitrogen solubility from Sieverts' law. The method consists of measuring the solubility of nitrogen in a melt of iron containing a known concentration of a second metal as a function of the nitrogen gas pressure over the melt. In this study the second metal was one of the refractory metals titanium, zirconium, columbium, vanadium, or tantalum. When the nitrogen pressure at which the refractory nitride forms is reached, a deviation of the measured solubility of nitrogen in the melt from Sieverts' law is observed in the form of a "pressure halt." The concentration of nitrogen in the melt associated with this breakpoint in the nitrogen-absorption curve is then used to calculate the nitride solubility. The Sieverts method was used to measure nitrogen solubility as a function of nitrogen pressure and temperature. The experimental equipment for this technique has been previously described in detail. 1,9 Charge materials used were vacuum-melted high-purity iron (Ferrovac-E) and the best commercial grades of the refractory metals obtainable (in all cases at least 99.8+ pct pure). Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used to hold all melts except those containing zirconium, for which zirconia crucibles were necessary. Temperatures were measured by a disappearing-filament type optical pyrometer sighted vertically downward on the melt surface through a 1/4-in.-diameter sight hole in the crucible lid. By means of a technique previously described, 9 in which the refractory-metal nitride was precipitated at one temperature then redis-solved by raising the temperature 50°C and precipitated again at a higher temperature, it was possible to obtain data over a temperature range of up to 200°C on a single melt. The bridge has a span of 22.9 m (meters) and a height of 4 m above normal pool elevation to the underside of the center of the arch (See Fig 1). AGGLOMERATION U.S. 4,067,727 - In the sintering of a charge of iron oxide ore, a fuel and a flux on a travelling grate machine, the dust problem is minimized by providing a plurality of cooling zones and by directing heated dust-laden air from a first cooling zone to the sintering zone wherein the dust is filtered from the air by the material being sintered. Air from a further cooling zone can be exhausted directly to the atmosphere. Dust removal in the cooling zone is improved by using a purging zone in which higher pressure air agitates the dust in the sintered material. I had the honor to present to the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Pittsburg meeting, February, 1896, a paper having the foregoing title, in which I said : " It has generally been accepted as a fact that cast-iron, under the influence of repeated shocks, becomes brittle, and will finally break under a blow which otherwise it would have withstood. It will probably surprise metallurgists, therefore, to learn that experiment disproves the supposed fact, and establishes exactly its opposite. " The result of about a thousand tests of bars of cast-iron of all grades, from the softest foundry mixtures to the strongest car-wheel metal, enables me to assert with confidence that, within limits, cast-iron is materially strengthened by subjection to repeated shocks or blows." 4.3-1. Introduction. DEFINITION OF PRODUCTION SYSTEMS ENGINEERING. Surface mines, like most other mining and manufacturing operations, are usually organized along functional departmental lines. Frequently a mine manager will have his responsibilities divided among production, maintenance, administrative, and engineering functions. Often these are separate departments, but various combinations and variations of these functions can be found in mining companies throughout the world. The production function is responsible for physically removing the ore from the ground, processing it, and shipping the product to its market. The production manager supervises and is responsible for all man-machine systems necessary to extract and process the ore. The maintenance function, which is sometimes included within the framework of production, has the task of insuring the maximum availability and longevity of equipment needed to produce the ore. The administrative function is responsible for accounting, personnel, industrial relations, purchasing, public relations, property, and other related staff functions. For purposes of this chapter, engineering can be described as the function which plans, designs, and supervises construction of physical plant and equipment. In this context engineering includes mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical, and mining engineering. However, another phase of engineering is to prepare plans to insure that the various man-machine components function in an optimum way towards the single most important goal of any enterprise-the maximization of return on the investors' money. Along with the planning, another duty of engineering is to audit all phases of the operation for the purpose of recommending improvements toward this same general goal. These latter two ideas form the basis for a discussion of production engineering and systems engineering. Production engineering is a catchall, problem-oriented function whose duties can include: 1) solution of day-to-day production problems, 2) short-

My attention was called by Prof. Henry M. Howe to the article by N. M. Wittorff, entitled Preliminary Investigation of Primary Crystallization and Subsequent Physico-Chemical Permutations in Iron-Carbon Alloys Containing More Than 4 Per Cent. of Carbon. I thereupon wrote to Mr. Wittorff and received a copy of the paper in the Russian language, with permission from him to publish a translated abstract in our Transactions, the original having appeared in the .Journal of the Russian Chemical Society, vol. xliii. (1911), in which it occupies some 78 pages, with 10 illustrations and 47 micrographs. The novelty of the data presented, and especially the scientific importance of Mr. Wittorff's deductions, as well as their value in helping to clarify our meager understanding of that useful but puzzling commodity, cast-iron, seemed to more than justify a publication of the essential facts in concise form in the English language, which has not been done previously so far as I know, although a very brief abstract has been published in German, and a somewhat more extended one in French.' When the work of translation was begun, I did not know that it bore in part upon the investigations of Ruff, which Howe is reviewing at some length at this meeting. This coincidence renders the following condensed translation of Wittorff's work, which I have prepared with the aid of Sidney Marcus as interpreter, the more appropriate here. The result of Wittorff's study is greatly to extend our knowledge of the hyper-eutectic alloys of iron and carbon, and to add several significant lines at the right-hand side of the diagram originally drawn by Bakhuis-Roozeboom, and developed by Roberts-Austen, Benedicks, Carpenter and Keeling, Upton, Goerens, and others. The problem of drying ores is one that most mill-engvineers are sooner or later called upon to meet, and it may be timely to point out some of the difficulties resulting from such operations from purely a metallurgical and economic standpoint. We mean, in the following pages, to discuss primarily the effect of such operations on the ore. itself, without particular reference to the mechanical or cost features of the subject. That an appreciable tonnage of the ore fed to the usual form of drier, either rotary or stack, is lost, is fairly well appreciated, but we believe that only a few mill-managers know just what their drier-losses amouilt to, and we have found that in most cases they console themselves with the fact that the drier-smoke is not very much discolored, and it is generally believed that the draft is not sufficient to carry away more than a negligible percentage of the values.

It is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Dansactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,' showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny? distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but cannot be obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Co. in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

IT. is, of course, expected that manufacture of the various metal powders should involve numerous methods adapted to the specific characteristics of the metals themselves. Several methods for powdering a particular metal may be available, but the physical characteristics of the powder as produced by the several methods may be quite different. In the final analysis, the application of the metal powder dictates the physical properties that the metal powder must possess, and this, to a very large extent, will determine which of several possible methods of. manufacture is adopted. Sometimes powder of the same metal is produced by more than one method, each powder having specific characteristics .that make it particularly suitable for its application. For purposes of classification, the various methods of powdering metals can be grouped as follows: 1. Machining. 2. Milling (by ball mills, stamps, attrition mills, etc.). 3. Shotting (pouring molten metal into water, air, etc.). 4. Granulation (by stirring molten metal while solidifying). 5. Atomizing (disintegrating by steam, compressed air, etc.). 6. Condensation of metal vapor. 7. Reduction of oxide powders. 8. Chemical precipitation. 9. Electrolytic deposition. 10. Sintering (for producing alloy powders). 11. Formation of an alloy followed by dissolving or otherwise removing one of the alloying constituents. MACHINING Turnings, cuttings, filings, etc., are, of course, produced as by-products in machine work of various kinds, and find certain applications as metal powders. For example, iron powder so produced is used extensively as a reducing or precipitating agent and as a constituent in certain hard-finish cements.

One of the most unexpected and unusual mining disasters which have ever been recorded in the Pennsylvania anthracite region, or, in fact, in any coal-mining district, occurred in the northern anthracite field near Nanticoke, Luzerne County, about 10 o'clock on Friday morning, December 18, 1885. This accident caused the death of twenty-six persons, a larger number than had perished in any catastrophe in the anthracite mines since that which occurred at the West Pittston mine in 1871. The Nanticoke disaster resulted from a " cave-in " in the roof of a portion of the Ross coal-bed workings from Slope No. 1 of the Susquehanna Coal Company, by which a large body of quicksand, gravel, rock- and coal-boulders, and water broke through the roof of the mine, filling up a large extent of the workings, until not only the water, but also the rock material, flowed out at the mouth of the mine. Immediately over the point where the "cave-in" occurred, was located a large pile of refuse coal and slate, taken from Slope No. a. After the occurrence of the accident, I made a very careful examination of the ground in the vicinity of the "cave-in," in conjunction with a study of all the maps, sections and other mining data in the possession of the Susquehanna Coal Company, which were placed at my disposal by Manager Irving A. Stearns. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was compiled from the Company's map, and from special maps made by the Geological Survey under the direction of my assistant, Mr. Frank A. Hill. This map shows the relative position of the mine-workings, the surface features and the "cave-in," and other points to be specially referred to hereafter. MINING operations of the Charcas unit at present are limited to the Tiro General mine at Charcas, in the State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Tiro General mine was first operated during the Spanish occupation of Mexico for rich silver ores in an oxidized zone along the outcrop of the principal vein. In depth the ore is a complex sulfide with widely varying proportions of sphalerite, argentiferous galena and chalcopyrite; and until recent years, it was economically impossible to carry on mining otherwise than irregularly in sections of the veins richest in galena and chalcopyrite. The advent of selective flotation brought the orebody as a whole within the field of economic interest, and a flotation mill of 650 metric tons daily capacity was constructed in the year 1925. The mining of partly worked-out sections of the mine, as well as the very heavy ground in most of the stopes opened in virgin ore, presented an unusually difficult problem. This -paper describes the so-called "filled top slice" stoping method finally adopted as the standard system.

THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon' the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

The Mojave mining district is situated in a group of small hills centering around Soledad peak, in the Mojave desert, Kern county, Cal. These hills are about 4.5 miles SSW. of Mojave, a railroad town at the junction of the Santa Fé and Southern Pacific railroads. The town of Mojave is about 50 miles north of Los Angeles, to which it is connected both by telegraph and by rail. The distance on the Southern Pacific railroad is 102 miles, covered in 3 hr. and 45 min. by express train. A sketch-map of this region is shown in Fig. 1. The Mojave district is relatively isolated. The only other mining towns in this section of California are Randsburg and Johannesburg, in a district (containing the well-known Yellow Aster mine) at the northern end of a low range of hills, which begins about 20 miles NE. of Mojave, runs nearly N. for 35 miles, and varies in width between 3 and 6 miles. As will be seen later, the origin and formation of these hills are not the same as those of Soledad peak. II. Climate and VEgetation. The climate and vegetation of the Mojave district are typical of the arid regions of the southwestern United States. During the winter and spring there is some rainfall, and the tempera ture is generally from 60" to 70" F. in the day-time. The rainfall in the spring is often very considerable for short spaces of time, and cloud-bursts are not infrequent. In summer there is continual sunshine, with temperatures, as a rule, exceeding 100" F. in the day-time, while 115" F. in the shade of a house is not at all unusual; but at night the temperature falls considerably. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A.
