INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, "Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices, and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with the minimum amount of instruments needed merely to guide operators. Processes were manually con- trolled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow, and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material throughput, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins, or producing a new and salable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable.

An improved replica technique is developed for a nondestructive study of the nucleation and growth of fatigue cracks. Three different growth stages of a fatigue crack were observed. An initial stage of high growth rate is followed by a long period of very slow growth, until finally a third period of high growth rate leads to fracture. THE metal-fatigue process is of a very complex nature. The experimental approach towards fatigue is susceptible to many minor influences which, together with the unavoidable scatter in testing results, makes the interpretation a matter of extreme care. The generally accepted fact that, in a homogeneous material, the fatigue cracks start at a free surface indicates that surface studies may contri-but in an essential way to a better understanding of the fatigue mechanisms. Indeed metallographic observations of the fatigue phenomena have been very fruitful in the last decade. The study of extrusions, intrusions, and persistent slip bands has contributed much to the present knowledge of the early processes in fatigue.' The drawback of the current metallographic techniques lies in the fact, however, that either observations of fatigue phenomena had to be made in a destructive way after an only partly executed test or a sequence of observations on the same test bar was only possible on notched specimens.2 4 In both cases an uncertainty exists as to the nucleation and growth of the fatigue crack in an unnotched test bar, where the crack can start at any place of a large area and develops in a test bar, which is macroscopically

Discussion of the paper Of JAMES JOHNSTON, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 85, January, 1914, pp. 107 to 133. CHAIRMAN E. GIBBON SPILSBURY.-I would like to call attention to the fact shown in this paper that less than five years or perhaps seven years ago nobody had thought it possible to cyanide with success silver ores. The cyaniding of silver and gold ores was first of all started in Mexico, and gradually extended to this country in the case of the silver ores alone. The average extraction, I think, for the metals in Mexico, in the case of the silver ore, is less than 85 per cent., whereas here, in the case of a very complex ore, carrying a high percentage of sulphur and arsenic, and other objectionable elements, the ore has been treated so as to extract an average of 95 per cent. of the silver contents of the ore. It is really a phenomenal revolution in the metallurgy of silver ores which has been demonstrated and worked out at the Nipissing mines. GEORGE A. PACKARD, Boston, Mass.-I would like to suggest a slight modification, perhaps, of the statement which is made that no one considered cyaniding of silver ores up to five, or perhaps seven years ago, because in 1897, when I was at Mercur, Utah, one mill near there was operating on silver ores. It did not operate very successfully from a commercial standpoint, because they did not have a great deal of ore, but the extraction, I was told, was very satisfactory, and I am quite confident that it was, because, as suggested by the name, Chloride Point, the ores were silver chloride ores, and of course very easily soluble. Some years before that, in 1892, I made some tests myself. I spent three months making tests on more or less complex silver sulphide ores at Virginia City, Mont., and while our tests on the plain sulphide ores, finely ground, were quite successful, on account of the presence of a small amount of copper we did not work out a satisfactory solution of the problem at that time; although since then a cyanide plant has been erected and for at least eight years these ores have been treated by cyaniding at Virginia City, and the mill is still in operation. The period of five to seven years should, therefore, be modified considerably, in justice to the pioneers in the cyanide processes. REGINALD E. PART I. § 1. Introduction. After giving certain definitions, this paper gives the reasons which led to Roozeboom's form of the diagram of the freezing-point curves and general equilibrium of the iron-carbon compounds, steel and cast-iron ; and then those which led to replacing it with the present or double diagram, in which graphite is at all temperatures held to be the more stable and cementite the less stable (metastable) form of carbon. Next in § 10 the evidence supporting this greater stability of graphite is examined, then in § 17 that which seems to oppose it, and in § 22 a summary of the evidence is presented. The second part of the paper considers the topography of the graphite-iron diagram, rejecting summarily the solubility-lines based on the data of Charpy and Grenet and of Mannes-mann, on the ground that the data even on their face do not really point toward these lines, and that they are wholly incompetent to determine any solubility-lines whatsoever, because they report together with the dissolved carbon also an indeterminate quantity of cement-carbon, and because even such carbon as is actually dissolved, only in part represents the solubility of graphite, and in another and indeterminate part represents the solubility of cementite, or at least of carbon in presence of cementite as distinguished from graphite. It might be thought that graphite is but slightly soluble in iron, because of the absence of any suggestions of eutectoid graphite, corresponding to the eutectoid cementite of pearlite in very many cases in which the cast-iron seems to consist of ferrite and massive graphite only, and because of the micrographs of Goerens and Gutowsky. In these the primary austenite of cast-iron quenched but little below the eutectic freezing-

A SEARCH through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1.

SOME months ago one of the authors was asked to write a paper on the heat treatment of steel castings that would be more comprehensive than other matter lie had published; this is an attempt to present in condensed form the results of experimental work and actual practice carried out for the most part in 1907, 1908; and 1909. It is not a laboratory research and the work done was carried out for the express purpose of putting in practice the processes discovered as fast as possible. Most of the tests are the result of commercial practice and not of bars annealed in our laboratory; most of the micrographs were made for our own records and not for publication. Certain of the micrographs, therefore, are not as clear as we may wish but they were good enough for our purpose at the time they were made. The tests and micrographs are selected from several thousands in our files. All of these micrographs are magnified 60 diameters. These experiments were conducted almost entirely on steel made in a 3-ton bottom-blown converter, and most of the steel illustrated analyzes about 0.05 in phosphorus and sulfur. Unfortunately, a certain number of specimens are shown of which we do not have the complete analysis, but in most cases in which the phosphorus and sulfur vary much from the figure just given that fact is noted. For purposes of comparison, we have included a certain number of micrographs and tests of steel made in the electric furnace, some of which were from specimens made in other shops and some in our own shop, and some tests of acid open-hearth and tropenas steel.

A SURVEY and critical appraisal of published information about Young's modulus was originally made by the writer because of a complete lack of information about this very important quantity in works on mechanics, physical metallurgy, physics, and other sciences. It was felt that a comprehensive summary of such information about Young's modulus might be of general interest and may suggest new problems or lines of attack on other problems that involve E. Hence this paper has been prepared even though it is only a review, with no new ideas or experimental data. The references are only those used in assembling the paper. No attempt was made to compile a complete bibliography on the subject of Young's modulus. CALCULATION OF YOUNG'S MODULUS FROM THEORETICAL OR EMPIRICAL CONSIDERATIONS Many attempts have been made to compute E from theoretical considerations. The earliest calculations were probably those of Tomlenson (1883) and Southerland (1891), but Fessenden 41,42 made extensive calculations a few years later and arrived at the relationship: [2E = 78. 101 (_L V] where V is the atomic volume. In 1923, Peczalski,43 working from the same stand-point but with more information available on atomic structure, arrived at an identical relationship, which he expressed as: [E=B(m) 2] where B is a constant of value about 8 • 10 7, p is density and m is atomic weight; the atomic volume, of course, being m/p. Portevin44 immediately pointed out that while the equations of Fessenden and Peczalski were true of the common metals, they gave low values for the refractory metals with high moduli (Fig. I). He showed (Fig. 2) that much better concordance was obtained by means of an empirical equation of the form: [E _ KT'Vb] where K is a constant; T the absolute melting point; V, atomic volume, and a and b constants of value approximately I and 2 respectively. This constant K in the Portevin equation is not necessarily the same for all elements, as shown by Thompson.45 Other equations for E based upon theoretical considerations have been derived by Honda and Yamada49 and Lasareff. 50 The most recent calculations of elastic moduli based upon quantum mechanics are probably those of Fuchs.46-48 He extended the method of Wigner and Seitz for calculating the lattice energy and compressibility of monovalent metals and computed the elastic constants of lithium,

GOLD was discovered in Alder Gulch, Virginia. City, Mont., on May 26, 1863. In a short time some 6000 people flocked to the new discovery, and on the banks of Alder Gulch six settlements sprang into existence, the principal one, Virginia City, alone surviving. This town today has a population of 800, and is the county seat of Madison County. It is estimated that between forty and fifty million dollars in gold was produced up to 1904. Virginia City is situated at the mouth of Alder Creek where that stream leaves the narrow canyon that cuts the steep foothills flanking Old Baldy Mountain, elevation 9572 ft., 12 mi. south. Virginia City itself is 5700 ft. above sea level.

NINETEEN Thirty-Six was the biggest year in volume in the history of the oil industry, and unquestionably the best since 1929 in respect to profits. The quota of new and difficult problems to face seemed a little smaller during 1936 than in most recent years, and a somewhat better balance existed between the different branches of the industry. 'Domestic consumption of gasoline in 1936, estimated at about 475 million barrels-the highest on record, was approximately 11 per cent above 1935, and 26 per cent above 1929. Demand for crude oil increased in about the same proportion: over 1935, and the average production, of about three million barrels daily,' constituted a new high level.

DOUBT in anyone's mind that this is the age of metals, industrially speaking, could easily have been dispelled by attending the National Metal Congress in Chicago, Sept. 22 to 26. Iron, copper and aluminum; zinc, lead and nickel, often alloyed with each other or with some of a dozen minor metals, make the materials without which the modern world could not run. Science, pure and applied, is doing marvels in finding new mixtures, new alloys to meet new needs; in developing new means of rolling, fabricating, casting and welding metals cheaply-and effectively. These and related matters were the subject of 100 papers presented at 33 seperate sessions of the organizations that participated in the congress.

STRIP coal mining in the United States has-become noted for its massive equipment, especially its power shovels. Notable among the latest examples of this trend is the Bobolink mine of the Binkley Mining Co., at Seeleyville, Ind.,. eight miles from Terre Haute. This is only one of the Binkley company's operating properties; in all, the company owns or controls 26 mines, in fourteen seams. The Bobolink, however, is the largest strip mine in America and probably also in the world. It has an estimated life of fifteen years. As in preceding years, the most intensive drilling activity during 1934 took place in the old fields of the western part of the Polish Carpathian petroleum province (district of Jaslo). The number of wells completed to the end of 1934, expressed in percentages, is as follows: Jaslo district, 57 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 27; Stanislawow district 8 and Boryslaw fields only 7 per cent. The number of meters drilled (Table 2), expressed in percentages, for the same fields are as follows: Jaslo district, 51 per cent; oil fields outside Boryslaw-Tustanowice-Mraznica, 26; Stanislawow district, 12, and Boryslaw oil fields, 11 per cent. Coal production during 1963 amounted to 446 mil- lion tons, an anticipated increase of about 6% over the 1962 production of 422 million tons. Electric consumption was 207 million tons, a continuation of its upward trend with an increase of about 7%. The metallurgical market consumed 77 million tons: the industrial market, 96 million tons; and the retail market, 26 million tons. Exports were 46 million tons. Modernization continues in the coal industry as it approaches the mid-1960's. The industry has shown a keen desire to explore and pursue new developments, new concepts and new managerial methods and techniques that have become so vital and important for industrial well-being.
