MOST commercial alloys undergo changes in phase composition after casting. This is a natural result of the fact that the alloys are not in a state of phase equilibrium as cast and phase changes will therefore take place, with more or less rapidity, in an attempt to attain equilibrium. The practical aspect of aging in zinc-alloy die castings concerns the changes in physical properties and in dimensions that may accompany aging phase changes. Harmful alterations have been reduced to a minimum and zinc-alloy die castings are being produced today that are so stable with respect to dimensions and physical properties that they are entirely suitable for most practical purposes1. In the first paper' of this series, and in this paper, aging phase changes of zinc alloy die castings have been investigated and the possible influence of these changes on dimensional changes of the castings has been evalu-ated and compared with the dimensional changes actually experienced. The change of dimensions has been selected for practical comparison in these papers because the effect of phase changes on the dimensions of a casting is directly calculable; from X-ray crystal-analysis data of the phase structure. The die-casting alloys considered contain, in addition to zinc, 4 per cent of aluminum, about 0.03 per cent magnesium, and from 0 to 3 per cent of copper. It was shown in the former paper that the eutectoidal decomposition of the beta aluminum-zinc phase, while intrinsically capable of causing a considerable shrinkage, can have very little effect on the observed shrinkage of die castings because it takes place within a few days of aging, whereas the observed shrinkage continues for five weeks. The piping and segregation of ingots of steel is a comprehensive subject, and must be studied in reference to the different grades of soft, medium, and hard steel, rather than to discuss it in a general manner, as though applicable to all grades. Rail steel, however, will receive the most consideration in this paper, for the wheel-loads of the motive power and rolling stock have doubled from 1890 to 1910. Steel rails and tires which were efficient under the light loads, became less serviceable under the double wheel-loads, quadrupled tonnage, and higher speeds. Bessemer Steel. Bessemer steel of from 0.10 to 0.15 per cent. of carbon, for splice-bars, spikes, and tie-plates, rises in setting, and is cast in bottle-mouthed molds, which must be capped to prevent an overflow from the top. This grade of steel rises in the molds and makes a longer ingot than the volume of molten steel when first teemed. The ingots which are allowed to cool and then cut open, show, particularly in the upper part, large occluded blow-holes, and when they are not oxidized or do not contain foreign matter, weld more or less completely when the steel is rolled or forged above 1,100° C., and it is in this way that the blow-holes are closed in the low-carbon steels. Boiler-Plate and Fire-Box Steel. These grades often contain more or less minute laminations, which are the remains of small blow-holes forming after the setting metal has reached a pasty condition. The blow-holes in the low-carbon steels have not been prevented by usiug deox-idizers, though the ingots are slightly improved so far as the soundness of the steel is concerned. This grade of steel also rises in the molds in setting.

THE jig may be termed the standard coal-washing machine. Although exact figures on the relative tonnages of coal treated by the various coal-cleaning processes are not available, it is known that a large part of all the coal given special cleaning treatment is handled by jigs. This wide use of the jig warrants a special study of its performance. In this paper are presented the results of an analysis of work done by a three-compartment jig in treating bituminous coal from the Thick Freeport bed in Allegheny County, Pa. Certain systems of washing coal require sizing before washing, while others treat unsized coal. The prevailing practice, however, for the preparation of coking coal from the more easily washed coal is to treat an unsized or natural feed at about -1 in. size and smaller. Under such conditions, the minimum size of particle that is beneficiated has long been and is still a matter of discussion and conjecture. In a careful laboratory investigation Jüngst1 concluded that the practical limit of settling of fine coal is reached at from 0.02 to 0.008 in. On the other hand, Hancock2 has found that single-compartment jigs, used in preparing coal for the domestic market, usually allow most of the heavy (refuse) particles smaller than 1/4 in. to go into the washed coal. He also states that it is impossible with the ordinary coal jig to make any noticeable improvement in the quality of the coal finer than 20 mesh (about 1/30 in.). Because of its importance in coal cleaning, the work described in this paper was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining information on this subject, as a part of the general coal beneficiation program being carried out by the Bureau of Mines.

SYSTEMATIC data are presented on the relation of composition of nickel silvers to color, tarnish resistance, hardness and liquidus temperatures, for alloys containing up to 30 per cent nickel and 50 per cent zinc, further modified at certain nickel and zinc contents by 0 to 8 per cent of tin and 0 to 10 per cent of lead. Attention has also been directed, using a still more limited range of alloys, toward a study of tensile properties and such casting properties and characteristics as fluidity, shrinkage and pressure tightness. In some of these, rather broad ranges of composition are dealt with; in others, it has been expedient to focus attention on the Federal Specification 20 per cent nickel silver casting alloy, WWP-541. INTRODUCTION The demand for an alloy essentially white in color, which could be cast and worked by simple methods and which possessed strength and corrosion-resisting properties superior to the usual brasses, led to the discovery and early use of cupronickel alloys containing zinc, and some-times tin, lead and other metals. This type of alloy was generally known as German silver until the war, when the term "Nickel Silver" became generally accepted. The element principally responsible for the white color of the alloy and for its strength and corrosion resistance is nickel, which may constitute from 8 to 30 per cent of the alloy. The functions of the other elements will be described later. The manifold uses of nickel silver are largely due to its color, corrosion resistance, ease of casting, fabrication, joining and rather moderate cost. In many instances the alloy is finished by grinding and polishing while in others it may be finished with a silver or nickel plus chromium plate. Electroplates

In a previous paper1 the authors dealt with the physical properties of cold-rolled and heat-treated Britannia metal of the approximate composition Sn, 91 per cent., Sb, 7 per cent. and Cu, 2 per cent. It was found that cold rolling to more than 50 per cent. reduction produced a continuous softening of the metal when measured by the Brinell machine, whereas the Shore instrument indicated increased hardness; that the strength of the material followed the Brinell hardness and that the metal therefore became weaker the more it was cold-rolled; and further, it was found that hardness and strength could be largely restored to the cold-rolled metal by "baking" for about one hour at any temperature between 200" and 450" F., the melting point. The higher the baking temperature, the more effective was the heat treatment as far as increased hardness was concerned. It seemed to be of little importance whether the metal was soaked or not at the baking temperature for a great length of time and the rate of cooling seemed to be immaterial. The present paper deals with the same alloy and more particularly with the resistance towards various forms of stress — tensile, bend and deep drawing. The metallography of Britannia metal has in part also been covered and an explanation attempted for the abnormal behavior of this alloy. Tensile and Bend Tests Two ingots 73/4 in. wide, 11 in. long and ¾ in. thick were cast from the same pot. One ingot was cold-rolled in one direction to a strip 0.241 in. thick, which furnished the tensile test specimens; the other ingot was rolled in the same way to 0.253 in. and furnished the specimens for the bend tests. The ingots were cast as described in the previous paper and cold-rolled in six passes.

Waterhouse announced that the fall meeting will be devoted to alloy steel. This meeting will be held in Chicago the week of Sept. 22 in connection with the National Metal Congress. He also announced that oxygen in steel will be the central idea of the meeting which will be held in New York next February. The first paper, entitled "Sintering Limonitic Iron Ore at Ironton, Minn.," was presented by Perry G. Harrison (T. P. 284), the author. Sintering was first un¬dertaken in 1024 to treat Cuyuna range iron and manganiferous ores low in silica and high in moisture and containing objectionable qualities of fine... A Dwight-Lloyd machine was first installed. This machine was replaced by a larger one having a width of 72 in. The power cost was decreased from about $11.22 per ton of sinter on a 42-in. machine to about X0.14 for the 72-in. machine. The tons of sinter per man-shift was increased from 11.86 to 16.77. Improvements embodied in the larger plant reduced the cost of sintering to $0.41. The analyses of iron ore and manganiferous ore and the sinter produced from these materials was used to show the increase in value at the mine resulting from sintering. IN 1947 the mining industry strove desperately to regain operating normalcy. During the first part of the year the industry in this country was plagued with labor shortages, strikes, and portal-to-portal lawsuits. Then followed the uncertainty of Government policy with respect to subsidies and tariffs; and the long and bitter controversy as to whether we are a nation of mineral "haves" or "have-nots." As the year progressed the labor supply impoved somewhat and the Taft-Hartley law brought partial relief to strike-troubled industry. The uncertainty with respect to tariffs was partly answered by President Truman on April 29 when he announced the suspension of the 4¢ import duty on copper until March 31, 1949, and later, near the close of the year, by the announcement of the tariff agreement signed by the United Nations at Geneva. By this agreement tariff rates are to be adjusted downward, or "bound" at their present levels, for three years, on commodities amounting to some 60 per cent of United States trade. Effective Jan. 1, 1948 the rate of duty will be substantially reduced on ores, concentrates, or metals of zinc, aluminum, copper, manganese, tungsten, iron, steel, barytes, nickel, cadmium, and antimony.

Edward Stafford, Chester, Pa.:—Doring all my business life, I have been engaged in the manufacture of Bessemer and open-hearth steels, but, during my long connection with the Shoenberger Steel Co. of Pittsburg, I had some experience in the manufacture of high-grade puddled iron for horseshoes, and in making, by Dr. Otto Wuth's process, extremely pure, low-phosphorus puddled blooms (analyzing from 0.005 to 0.01 per cent. of phosphorus and sulphur), which were melted with low-phosphorus pig-iron in acid open-hearth furnaces, to make extra locomotive fire-box steel. I have also seen the Danks puddlers in operation at different times and places, notably where they were most successful, at the Otis Steel Works, Cleveland, Ohio; then under the management of our friend, Mr. S. T. Wellman. These Danks blooms were made solely for open-hearth melting-stock, to which they were well adapted. (The unavoidable presence of bits of ore-fix imbedded in the mass of the metal always prevents the profitable manufacture of merchant iron from Danks' blooms.) With the experience just described, I was to some degree in position to value fairly the means, methods and results of Mr. Roe's mechanical puddling from the metallurgical or technical and economic points of view, when given an opportunity by Mr. Roe to see his puddling-furnace or machine in operation in Pottstown, Pa. Briefly, the furnace, with water-cooled bottom, is rectangular in plan, about 20 by 8 ft. in the clear, suspended by trunnions at the middle of the long sides, at a height of 17 or 18 ft. above the general level. The oscillation (65" each way from the vertical) is accomplished by geared segments (attached to the downward-projecting side or trunnion-plates) with which engage pinions driven by a reversing engine. This paper supplements and brings up to date a report prepared earlier this year and presented at the Eleventh Pan American Railway Congress in Mexico City. Most of the original report is contained in this paper in order to acquaint the reader with the project background. On December 1, 1961, construction of this locomotive was completed. Stationary testing started immediately, and a host of problems in various areas were uncovered. Many of these had no relation to the use of coal in a direct fired gas turbine. All of them emphasized the problems which plagued previous projects of this kind. In 1944 the Locomotive Development Committee of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., was formed to study the problems of combustion, coal handling, and fly ash removal which would have to be solved before coal could be used to fire a gas turbine. By 1947 this committee was composed of the chief executive officers of nine eastern railroads and five eastern coal companies. All of the members of this committee were vitally concerned in a coal fired gas turbine because coal cost only one-fourth as much per heat unit as fuel oil. A number of research projects were started to develop and test components on a small scale. This included work at John Hopkins University, Battelle Memorial Institute, Institute of Gas Technology at Chicago, Purdue University, and Southern Research Institute. By 1946 a pilot plant had been installed at the Dunkirk, New York plant of Alco Products Div. of American Locomotive Co. The U. S. Bureau of Mines made available to the Locomotive Development Committee (hereafter called LDC) a Houdry process gas turbine plant, originally destined for a Russian oil refinery. The full scale pilot plant was used to evaluate the results obtained from the small scale studies under actual gas turbine conditions. Operation of this plant disclosed a number of problems which had not been discovered in the small scale tests. By 1951 four 250 hr tests had been conducted with the Houdry gas turbine to test out a variety of equipment. The major problem concerned the removal of abrasive fly ash from the products of combustion so that wear on turbine blades would not be excessive. The first 250 hr test showed that the original fly ash separating equipment was inadequate. Large ash particles passing through the turbine blading were nicking the leading edges of the first row blades. At the conclusion of the second 250 hr test, erosion was so severe that the first row of stator and the first row of rotor blades were replaced. At the end of the third 250 hr test, it was necessary to replace the first three rows of stator blading. The fourth test was used to test out a new design fly ash separator developed by LDC and named the Dunlab tube. This device gave more encouraging results than any of the others tested. Early enthusiasm for overcoming major difficulties had resulted in placing an order in 1946 with Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. for a 3750 hp regenerative gas turbine. The gas turbine, together with associated combustion and ash removal equipment, coal handling equipment, generators and gear reduction unit was installed at Dunkirk by 1951. A 750 hr test was made in 1952 with the LDC-Allis Chalmers gas turbine power plant. At the end of this test it was necessary to replace the first four rows of both rotor and stator blading. Rows 5 and 6 did not require replacement. In 1953 the American Locomotive Co. joined with LDC and assumed an active role in equipment development and manufacture. During 1954 LDC-Alco operated the rebladed gas turbine 300 hr to determine if a new fly ash separator was adequate. Performance of the improved separator was considerably better, but trouble was experienced with clogged blowdown lines from the Dunlab tubes. When these lines clogged it permitted the passage of abrasive particles. In 1955 a total of 1421 hr was run. This included 243 hr of cycle operation on Union Pacific coal from the D. O. Clark mine at Superior, Wyoming. During the 243 hr a total of 370 tons of coal was consumed. The purpose of this test was to determine if U.P. coal was suitable for use in a coal fired turbine. It was the unofficial opinion that it was as good or better than the eastern coals that had been tested.

During the past five years we have probably witnessed greater technological advances than in any similar period. Industry and science have steadily marched ahead. The makers of iron and steel products have watched with great interest the development of streamlined trains, faster and safer airplanes, the entirely new science of air-conditioning and the widespread use of stainless steels. Since 1930, we have witnessed the erection of the world's largest suspension bridge, the largest and fastest ocean liner and the spectacular Boulder Dam, while even greater things are planned in these particular fields. Other industries, too, have been moving ahead rapidly. This advance in a few years has been caused primarily by the fierce competition of the depression. Now, more than ever, is the emphasis placed upon quality and service. Makers of southern merchant pig iron have been no exception and have been confronted with increasingly strict chemical specifications and with much greater stress on physical characteristics than ever before. For example, sulfur in the iron must be held very low, competition demanding that it be in the 0.020's and low 0.030's; silicon content must be held within a very narrow range, and definite requirements of phosphorus and manganese are an essential part of the specifications. Physical characteristics are becoming of increasingly greater importance. The introduction of triple-skimmed, slow-cooled iron several years ago was the first step in this direction. Now there are a few customers who buy iron by chemical analysis and physical appearance, having found that the analysis alone is an insufficient guide to their requirements. In addition to questions of quality, the subject of cost has greatly altered the southern furnaceman's viewpoint on many things. Formerly we had low-grade but cheap raw materials, but recent developments, such as greatly increased labor rates, have raised the cost of the same

THE proposition to make pig-iron from magnetic concentrates and cobbed ore with charcoal-fuel weighing from 12 to 20 lb. per bushel is, on the face of it, not inviting; but the successful work that has been done under these adverse conditions warrants a permanent record in our Transactions, especially as it furnishes a comparison with, coke blast-furnace practice under similar conditions. The record of the furnace-practice is briefly summarized as follows:-The charcoal was made of hemlock, pine, spruce, balsam, maple, beech and birch woods. All the concentrates containing from 62 to 65 per cent. of iron would pass in. screen, of which about 34 per cent.. would pass an 80-mesh sieve. The cobbed ore, varying in composition from 32 to 47 per cent. metallic iron and from 23 to 32 per cent. of. silica, would pass through a I-in. ring, of which about 25 per cent. would pass a 1/8 in. screen. The furnace was blown in October 20,1903, with charcoal which was supposed to weigh when dry 18 lb. to the bushel. Some charcoal similar to this was stored in the stock-house for about a year and was then found to weigh 12 lb. per bushel. During the first 10 days of the blast, the furnace produced 362 tons of pig-iron, using 200 bushels of charcoal per ton of iron. From November 1st to 12th, the volume of the blast was increased gradually from 2,808 to 5,460 cu. ft. per minute, with practically no increase of output. The silicon-content of the resultant pig-iron averaged 0.75 per cent., with sulphur about 0.035 per cent. THE members arrived at Ticonderoga, N. Y., at noon, Tuesday, October 15th, and were received by Mr. Cyrus Butler, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements. During the afternoon the works of the American Graphite Company and the Horicon Iron Company were visited under the guidance of Mr. Butler, President of both companies, and of Mr. William Hooper, Superintendent. An excursion was then made, in carriages, to old Fort Ticonderoga, on Lake Champlain, after which the party were driven to the Rogers Rock Hotel, on Lake George. The first session of the Institute was held in the parlor of time hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, President of the Institute, opened the proceedings with the following address: I shall ask your attention, this evening, to a few reflections upon the subject of mining engineering as a profession in the United States, its past, its present, and its future, and its duties and oppor¬tunities with reference to the proper development of our great min¬eral resources. Thirty years ago, there were scarcely any mining engineers in this country, and but few in England, and there were no institutions where young men could be educated for the profession in the Eng¬lish language. France and Germany have been able for about a century to boast of mining schools of a high character, that number among their graduates such men as Humboldt, Weisbach, Rittinger, Combes, and Gruner. Of the few we then had worthy of the name of "mining engi¬neer," some had studied in the continental academies, and others were graduates in the school of practical experience, and had learned their profession in mines and smelting-works. Their work con¬sisted principally in making surveys and maps of mines and mining properties, geological reports, and analyses of ores ; but the mining engineer whom we often meet with now, who has studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy, geology, mechanics, and drawing; who is more or less familiar with machinery and its construction, and with the practical management of mines or smelting-works, and who is an expert in some one branch of his profession, would have been very difficult if not impossible to find in the United States. THIS nation has been depending upon the Lake Superior iron ranges for most of its iron ore requirements for over half a century. Furthermore, it can continue to draw the major portion of its ore requirements from the same source for another century or more, but to accomplish this, great changes must take place in the present ore mining industry. Preliminary preparations for these changes are now underway and in the next few years decisions of far-reaching importance must be made. But to understand the situation, it is first necessary to know something of the nature and occurrence of the Lake Superior iron formation. So far as is known, the merchantable grades of iron ore remaining in the various Lake Superior ranges are as shown in Table 1, which shows that

PRESENT knowledge of the usual metallurgical slags indicates that they are, for the most part, rather complex in behavior and as yet there is no ready means for describing, in a simple manner, the behavior of any one of them. One of the best known slag systems is the iron oxide-silica-lime ternary which is the basic "solvent" in a number of important metallurgical refining operations, the basic open hearth being one of the most important. In this operation, the slag dissolves such components as sulphur, phosphorus, manganese oxide, and magnesia. Considerable study of this slag system and the behavior of these additions has been carried out in the past by a number of authors, as has been summarized in several critical reviews.','2 However, except for determination of the activity of iron oxide, only a limited amount of effort has been directed towards developing, from these data, an understanding of the general behavior of the basic solvent. Reported here are the results from a series of calculations based on data from the literature which permit a semiquantitative evaluation of the activities of iron oxide, silica, and lime (plus magnesia) in the ternary system at 1600°C. The preliminary results, which were reported briefly at a symposium held by AIME in 1953, have been revised and are completed. The steps in the calculation are as follows:* I—establish the activity curves and the curve of the excess molar free energy of mixing at 1600°C for each of the binary systems, 2—construct the activity surface of iron oxide for the ternary from the data on the binary systems and information available in the literature for the ternary area, 3—determine the surface of excess molar free energy of mixing for the ternary system from the activity surface of iron oxide and from the molar curves obtained for the binary system, and 4—differentiate the ternary surface of the molar excess free energy of mixing to obtain the ternary surfaces for the logarithm of the activity coefficients for silica and lime (log rslo, and log rc.~). Si0,-Fe,O: Schuhmann and Ensio have measured the activity of iron oxide in simple iron oxide-silica slags when in equilibrium with y iron. Their data recalculated to 1600°C are shown in Fig. 1. Also included is a point representing a measurement by Gokcen and Chipmana of the activity of iron oxide at 1600°C at the point of saturation with solid silica. For convenience and in accordance with other treatments,' the calculations are based on the hypothetical component, FelO, which is obtained by converting all the analyzed iron in the slag to FeO. In spite of Schuhmann and Ensio's conclusion that the activity of iron oxide in the system does not vary with temperature over the experimental range of 1258" to 1407"C, the data are corrected to 1600°C assuming that temperature does have an effect. It was felt to be most reasonable to assume that the term log rr.10 is a linear function of the reciprocal of the temperature. Reyu has indicated that an effect of temperature on the activities in this system is to be expected from the Schuhmann and Ensio data. In essence, the correction consists of multiplying the experimental value of log rf,,o by the ratio of the experimental temperature in Kelvin to 1873°K. The magnitude of the correction is not large, being approximately 11.5 pct of the experimental value of log rve10. A very minor correction was necessary to compensate for the fact that the slags were in equilibrium with y iron in the experiment, while at steel-making temperatures they would be in equilibrium with liquid iron. Data for the correction were obtained from Darken and Gurry. The standard states established are pure liquid iron oxide (FelO) in equilibrium with pure liquid iron (with the appropriate amount of oxygen in solution) and pure liquid silica. The method of plotting in Fig. 1 is convenient for the calculation of the activity of liquid silica and permits a reasonable extrapolation for the activity of Fe,O in the ranges where no experimental data are available. The uncertainty in the extrapolation to infinity at one terminal where Nvelo = 1 for the usual Gibbs-Duhem integration is reduced considerably by this method. The region of two coexisting liquid phases is estimated to range from 1.8 to 41.7 mol pct Fe,O. The nature of the activity curve for the single-phase region indicates that the activity of iron oxide across the two-phase region is very close to 0.39. Computation of the function log ~F,,o/(1— NF,,o)' for this region (dashed line) in conjunction with the curve through the adjusted experimental data indicate the best probable value of 0.382 for alPe,o in the two-phase area. The line from 0 to 0.018 Nf~~o is obtained by assuming that the component follows Henry's law. In this range, the value for log rveto is 2.59. Appropriate mathematical manipulation of the plotted linet yields the activity curves for the The curve AF", the excess molar free energy of mixing (actual minus ideal), as shown in Fig. 3 is also computed from Fig. 1. This curve is required for subsequent calculations. CaO-Fe,O: The phase diagram for the lime-iron oxide system when in equilibrium with liquid iron is not well known but there appears to be no intermediate compound present. This fact as well as the activity values for Fe,O extrapolated to the CaO-Fe,O binary from Taylor and Chipman' tend to indicate somewhat negative deviations from ideality for the activity curves for the two components. Strong indication of this is evident in Fig. 1 where are plotted the points computed from the estimated activities of Fe,O for the binary system.' It appears that the best line through the data is a horizontal straight line. L. S. Darken—Laboratory investigation of deoxidizing and other steelmaking reactions is usually centered, at least first, on the determination of the equilibrium or equilibria involved. This seems a reasonable procedure since equilibrium, if attained, depends only on composition, temperature, and pressure; hence conclusions derived from data on small experimental quantities are applicable to a heat of steel providing eauilibrium is attained in both cases. A knowledge of equilibrium serves as a useful framework even though we may know that practical conditions do not correspond to complete equilibrium. On the other hand, nonequilibrium or rate phenomena depend on a wider variety of conditions and are more difficult to interpret; conclusions applicable to laboratory conditions may or may not apply to larger scale phenomena. Hence the attainment or nonattainment of true equilibrium in the experiments here reported is of critical importance in evaluating their significance. Since some of the statements in this paper and in the closely related preceding one (on aluminum deoxidation) imply some doubt on this matter, I should first like to ask the authors whether their conditions are intended and believed to represent equilibrium. I should like to point out three considerations which seem to cast considerable doubt on the achievement of equilibrium, at least of the particular equilibrium under consideration. 1. In the experiments on manganese deoxidation the authors point out that they could not maintain the manganese-oxide slag on top of the metal in their rotating crucible, and hence they substantially dispensed with this slag. This leads to serious trouble in the interpretation of the results, for any equilibrium is, of course, a particular specific equilibrium—in this case Mn + O = MnO The experimental deletion of the upper layer of manganese oxide means that if equilibrium is attained at all it is attained between the metal and the MnO which has soaked into or adhered to the crucible (under the metal) and has dissolved substantial amounts of the crucible material including impurities. These impurities may constitute a significant portion of the slag by virtue of the small total amount of slag, even though the crucible is relatively pure. Hence there would seem to be a strong presumption that the equilibrium (if attained) involves not a pure MnO (or MnO — FeO) slag but one saturated with alumina and containing perhaps considerable impurities which substantially lower the concentration and activity of MnO, causing the above reaction to proceed to the right further than it would in the absence of alumina and impurities. Hence it is not surprising that manganese here appears as a better deoxidizer than found by other investigators. The present results may represent equilibrium with a slag of unknown composition which seems unlikely to be particularly related to plant experience. 2. The curves representing the observed silicon deoxidation (figs. 3, 4, and 5) are all drawn with a discontinuity in slope at about 0.02 pct oxygen. This point is interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium, metal, slag, solid silica. The type of construction shown in these figures (though apparently fitting the data) is contrary to a fundamental principle of heterogeneous equilibrium as pertains to the construction of phase diagrams. According to this principle, the two solubility curves (each of the two portions of the curves in figs. 3, 4, and 5) must intersect in such manner that their (metastable) extensions must lie outside the homogeneous field rather than inside as in these figures. In other words, the "point" in these curves should be aimed in the opposite direction, if it is to be interpreted as corresponding to the three-phase equilibrium. The construction adopted is in violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This matter is discussed in detail in several texts and also by Lipson and Wilson.&apos;" The same criticism applies to the later figures representing conditions for manganese additions. The occurrence of this discontinuity or break at 0.02 pct oxygen casts further doubt on its interpretation. The earlier investigation of this system by Korber and Oelsen is in substantial agreement with the several recent findings of Chipman and coworkers that the oxygen content of iron in equilibrium with silica and silica-saturated iron oxide slag is about one third to one half that (0.24 pct at 1600") of iron saturated with pure iron oxide; thus there seems reliable evidence that iron saturated with silica and iron silicate slag at 1600" contains about 0.1 pct oxygen, or certainly much more than the 0.02 pct proposed in this paper. 3. In the quarternary system iron-silicon-manganese-oxygen one of the equilibria involved may be written 2 Mn + SiO2 (solid) = 2 MnO <slag> + Si The activity of SiO, is constant (if equilibrium is attained) by virtue of its presence as a substantially pure solid. At not too low metallic manganese content, the activity of MnO in the slag is constant by virtue of the fact that the slag is substantially pure manganese silicate saturated with silica and hence of constant composition. Thus the equilibrium constant for the above reaction is asi/a2Mn. Barring unanticipated large changes in the activity coefficients, the equilibrium constant may be adequately approximated for the composition range covered as [% Si]/[% Mn]2. Thus a plot of log [% Mn] against log [% Si] would be expected to be linear with a slope of one half as found by Kijrber and Oelsen. In the present investigation the slope (shown in fig. 15) is found to be one. It is difficult to believe that this finding represents a correct equilibrium determination, since it is at odds both with prior experimental investigation and with. theory. In view of the above points it seems that, although this paper reports many interesting findings, there is room for considerable skepticism as to the attainment of equilibrium and as to the conclusions drawn. N. A. Gokcen—The authors consider that Si% x O2% product is constant. This product is a function of the asi X a0 activity of Si02. The true constant is -------------. WHEN talking about Europe it is well to endeavor to keep politics and economics apart but they have become so intermingled in recent years that the discussion of one topic inevitably leads to the other. Economic influences formerly prevailed over politics but today national and international economies are governed by political forces. Commerce in raw materials, food, and manufactured products is now so restricted by governmental controls that the capacity of the world to produce and to consume, to exchange goods and to pay for them, cannot be gauged by the past or predicted by a multitude of experts. In prewar days there were some yardsticks but today there are none. Thus it is hazardous to make forecasts, for in all fields of human effort the world has been cast upon an uncharted sea.

SILICON and its metallurgical uses have been the subject of speculation since the earliest days of modern civilization. The early philosophers, Theophrastus and Pliny, believed that silica was a special form of ice, an opinion that was not seriously challenged until the seventeenth century. The first comprehensive view of the nature of silica was advanced by Lavoisier in 1787. He assumed silica to be an oxide of an unknown metal. In 1808 Berzelius produced ferrosilicon by heating silica, iron and charcoal. Probably the first produc¬tion of crystallized silicon was in 1854 when H. St. C. Deville accidentally produced the material while electrolyzing a double chloride of aluminum and sodium containing siliceous impurities. It is not strange that the early investigators should have given so much attention to silica and silicon, because of the great natural abundance of the former. Although silicon does not exist in the elemental state in nature, it has been estimated that the lithosphere contains approximately 60 per cent silica; quartz and rock crystal are found in practically every part of the world.

The Sanford Lake district encompasses an area covering 24 square miles in the central Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State. Discovery of the titaniferous magnetite deposits dates back to 1826. Several attempts to exploit the ores for iron prior to 1942 proved uneconomical because of difficulties with the associated titanium, lack of transportation facilities, and the isolated location. Since 1942, the National Lead Company has produced ilmenite concentrates for the titanium pigment industry, and a magnetite by-product used in the steel and refractory industries. Rocks of the area are Precambrian in age and of igneous origin. The area has a history of erosion, deformation, and metamorphism, subsidence, and finally uplift and glaciation. The resulting topography is extremely rough with drainage patterns controlled by a combination of fault patterns and glacial modifications. The district is within the large anorthosite massif making up the central high peak area of the Adirondacks. All of the various lowsilica rock types associated with the massif are found within the boundaries of the district. These consist of both the Marcy and Whiteface types of anorthosite and of gabbroic anorthosite, gabbro, and different grades of titaniferous magnetite ores. All of the rocks contain the same minerals and differ only in their percentages of these consitituents. Gabbro, and ore associated with it, demonstrate flow structure as both have foliation and lineation. Anorthosite and its associated ores are massive and show very little primary structure. Minor pegmatites and diabase dikes provide evidence of remobilization in selected areas and of late intrusion as well. Faulting is prevalent and follows a regional pattern of major faults trending northeastsouthwest and of minor faults at nearly right angles to them. There are four mineralized areas where an economic grade of ore has been found. Three of these have both gabbroic-type ore and anorthositic-type ore. The fourth has only gabbroic ore. Ores are graded according to their TiO, content, and these range from 9.5 per cent to over 30.0 per cent TiO,. Ore bodies of both types are related to gabbro and conform to the configuration of the gabbro bodies within the anorthosite. At least three distinct theories of ore genesis have been expounded by different investigators. Others propose some variations of one or more of these. Although complete agreement probably never will be reached, it is certain that no one process of ore emplacement can explain the complicated picture as seen today. Further understanding of the ores and their origin will require detailed mapping, sampling, and mineralogical studies of the entire district, and then it may never be understood without qualification.
