These notes are based on the megascopic study of a suite of 2,400 specimens of minerals and ores from the Butte mines, combined with field observations at intervals over a period of several years. The estimate of average vein composition is based on field acquaintance with the veins. It is probably correct in its broader proportions, and should be of use for comparison. Cementation rates ulere studied by rotating an elec-tropolished or etched copper strip in aqueous solutions, of either perchloric acid or alkaline cyanide, containing silver ions. The rates of cementation were more rapid in acidic media than in cyanide media. In both, the rates varied with the rate of rotation of the copper strip. The deposits formed in the acidic solutions were finely divided, loosely adhering powders. Those formed in the cyanide solutions were dense and adherent. The presence of the deposits influenced the cementation rates. In the acidic solutions the rate was enhanced, possibly because of the increased cathodic area. In the alkaline solutions the rates were decreased in the presence of the deposits. This has been attributed to restricting the diffusion of the copper ion from the rnetal outward into the bulk of the solution. In an earlier paper1 the authors described a kinetic study of the cementation of palladium on copper in perchloric acid solutions. That work indicated that there were two stages in the palladium cementation process. The first, more rapid stage was consistent with rate control by the diffusion of Pd11 ions to the copper surface and/or by chemical reaction at the surface. The second stage was consistent with rate control by the diffusion of copper ions from the copper surface, through the deposit, out into the main body of solution. The effect of the type of deposit on the rate of cementation is of particular interest because it may be one of the primary features involved when large quantities of metal are to be cemented from solution. No substantial investigations of the effect seem to have been made. Accordingly, an extension of the previous work was arranged to study the cementation of silver on copper. This system was selected because of the convenience of the analytical methods, the previously established technology with copper, and the fact that the system could be studied in both acidic and alkaline media. By selecting perchloric acid and alkaline cyanide solutions as the media, it was hoped that some assessment might be made of the effects, on cementation, of having the silver ion present in a virtually uncomplexed state and in a highly complexed state. EXPERIMENTAL The cementation rates were studied, as previously described,' by rotating a copper strip (1.0 by 23.2 cm) clamped to the peripheral surface of a lucite cylinder. The solutions were kept at constant temperatures (±0.05°C) under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, and samples were taken periodically for analysis. The initial solution volume was 1000 ml and the sample volume 5 ml. The initial silver(1) ion concentrations were made low (0.5 to 1.0 x 10-4 moles per liter) to minimize the influence of the cemented deposit on rates. The solutions were prepared by dilution of suitable aliquots of silver perchlorate and silver cyanide stock solutions. Both stock solutions were prepared from purified silver powder (Johnson, Matthey, and Mallory Ltd.) with redistilled deoxygenated water, and they were kept under an atmosphere of purified nitrogen. To prepare the stock solutions, weighed amounts of silver powder were dissolved with nitric acid. For the AgC104 stock solution the silver nitrate solution was evaporated twice to near dryness with perchloric acid and then made up to volume: For the NaAg(cN)2 stock solution, the silver ions were precipitated with sodium hydroxide solution. The precipitate was filtered, washed thoroughly with redistilled water, dissolved with 1.1 times the required stoichiometric amount of sodium cyanide solution, and made up to volume. The small amounts of free perchloric acid and sodium cyanide present in the stock solutions were disregarded in the preparation of the solutions. The copper strips were cut accurately from 0.025-in. sheet (American Metal Climax OFHC brand) and annealed for 1.5 hr at 470°C in a stream of nitrogen. Analyses of the solution samples for silver and copper were done with a Techtron Model AA-3 atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Calibration standards of the same composition as the experimental solutions were prepared and analyzed simultaneously with the samples. No difficulty was experienced in the analyses, and the reproducibility was within 1 to 2 pct in both alkaline cyanide and perchloric acid solutions.

EVERY producer of crude oil knows what is meant by the Rule or Law of Capture. It means that the ultimate ownership of a migratory substance such as oil is not determined until that substance is reduced to physical possession. Unless, therefore, the producer moves quickly to capture his share from the common pool, he may lose to any neighbor who is drilling and producing more rapidly than he a portion of the oil originally underlying his property. And there is no recourse open to him if his property is so drained. Under this rule it is obvious that the owner of an oil property, if he is to protect his' ownership, must be governed in his development and production policies by the activities of his neighbor rather than by his own business requirements. He must drill as densely and as fast as the other operators in the field or lose part of the oil to which he should be entitled.

Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous undergrortnd formations containing oil or tar. In applying this method, air is introduced via an injection well and the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited in the production well. A combustion zone then recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow. If the combustion-zorie temperature is sufficiently high, the oil or tar irz place is distilled arid cracked. The hydrocnrhon flows as a vapor to the production well and subsequently is condensed at the surface. Maximum temperature and velocity of morcment arc the two dependent variubles defining the progress of the combustion zone. A theoretical analysis has been made of heat flow in the reverse-comhustion process as.srtrning linear flow in a homogeneous system. Rescllts indicate that the maximum temperature reached and he cornbustion-zone relocity both increase with an incrense in air-injection rote. Heat loss to surroundings has little effect on the maximum comhustion-zone ten?perature achieved, but it is reflected in a reduced com-bustion-zorzc, velocity. It is also predicted that an increase in the oxygen-hydrocarbon reaction rate results in a reduction in the maximum temperature reached. The calculated results are in agreement with results from reverse-combustion experinments using samples of a tar sand. INTRODUCTION Reverse combustion is one thermal method of recovering hydrocarbons from porous underground forma-tions containing oil or tar.' In applying this method, air is introduced into the underground formation via an in-jection well. In one or more adjacent production wells, the mixture of air and hydrocarbons is ignited at the sand face. The combustion zone thus formed recedes toward the injection well, counter-current to the air flow (Fig. 1). Under certain conditions, the rate of recession of the combustion zone is sufficiently rapid that only a small fraction of the hydrocarbon at any point in the formation is consumed by combustion. If the combustion-zone temperature is sufficiently high, the uncon-sumed oil or tar in place may be partially distilled or cracked. This material then can flow as a vapor with the gaseous combustion products to the production well and subsequently be condensed at the surface. Under other conditions, the combustion-zone temperature may be so low that little, if any, of the hydrocarbon is vaporized. Nevertheless, the viscosity of the hydrocarbon may be reduced enough so that other recovery methods subsequently can be applied to produce oil at attractive rates. The maximum temperature achieved in the combustion zone and the velocity of movement are the two dependent variables defining the progress of the combustion zone. Presumably. knowledge of these factors will permit estimates to be made of oil recovery efficiency, oil and gas producticn rates and average amount of injection air required per barrel of oil recovered. The maximum temperature and combustion-zone vclocity are, in turn, expected to be dependent upon air flow rate, heat losses to surrounding formations, physical properties of the rock and the hydrocarbon. the extent to which the porous formation is saturated with the hydrocarbon, the rate of oxidation of the hydrocarbon and the amount of heat released. It is desirable that the relative importance of each of these factors be understood so that the results of laboratory tests of oil recovery by reverse combustion can be properly interpreted in terms of expected field performance. The uapor pressrcres of magnesium over binary alloys of magnesium with twelve of the yare-earth eletnetzts have been measured by the Knudsen effuion method in the temperature range 675° to 910°K. These vapor-pressure measurments were combined with data concerning the tevtrlitzul magnesium solubility and the vapor pressure of pure magnesinm to evaluale the standuvd free energies of pluase jormation. These free-etzergy values indicate that the CsCl structures of the heacy rave earths tend to be somewhat less stable than those of the light rare earths. This dif-]eying- behaviov covrelates with differences which have been obsevz~ed in other alloy systetns wherein a phuse appeurs, disappeavs, or changes crystal stvucture as the atomic number of the rare-earth com-ponent is changed. This behauior also appears to correlate with the struclurul rariations within the rare-earth elements themselves, and it is speculated that cariations in the spatial extent of the 4f orbitals are responsihle. STUDIES of the phase relationships and crystal structures in the binary systems between rare-earth metals (lanthanons) and magnesium are extensive but far from complete. However, the currently available information1-10 does produce a rather interesting pattern. This is illustrated in Table I. If one excludes europium and ytterbium from consideration because of their generally atypical behavior, it can be seen from the table that the phase relationships in the magnesium-rich regions show a distinctly different pattern for the lighter lanthanons as compared to the heavier lanthanons. For the lighter lanthanons, LnMg2 phases occur from lanthanum to gadolinium with the cubic MgCu2 structure, LnMg3 phases occur from lanthanum to terbium with the BiLi3 structure, and magnesium-rich phases occur from lanthanum to gadolinium with stoi-chiometries between Ln5Mg42 and LnMg12. In contrast, for the heavier lanthanons, those LnMg2 structures which have been examined have the hexagonal MgZn2 structure, LnMg3 phases have not been observed beyond terbium, and the magnesium-rich phases occur with the a manganese structure near a stoichiometry of Ln5MgZ4. The heavy lanthanon-magnesium systems thus appear to be analogous to the Y-Mg system""2 wherein YMg has the CsCl structure, YMg2 has the MgZn2 structure, and the region Y4Mgz5-Y5Mg24 has the a manganese structure, and no other intermediate phases are observed. Similarity in alloying behavior between yttrium and the heavy lanthanons occurs commonly, and on this basis it seems likely that LnMg2 phases will be found with the MgZn2 structure in the binary systems of dysprosium, thulium, and lutetium with magnesium when the appropriate investigations are made. In the case of the magnesium-rich phases of the lighter lanthanons, only the Ce-Mg phase relationships have been investigated thoroughly and in detail, and until similar investigations are made for the other systems there will remain questions as to which magnesium-rich stoichiometries represent equilibrium phases and what systematic variations occur in the sequence from lanthanum to gadolinium. Thus the data in Table I show that only the LnMg phases occur with the same crystallographic structure throughout the sequence from lanthanum to lutetium. It was speculated that the relative stability of these LnMg phases might vary from one lanthanon to the next in such a way as to presage the differences which occur among the more magnesium-rich lanthanon-magnesium phases. On this basis the present investigation of the thermodynamics of phase formation was Gndertaken for the LnMg phases. This article presents a general equation describing the xYt surface in batch grinding. This equation contains as special cases most of the relationships which have been deduced from kinetic studies. In an earlier paper an analytical solution of the integro-differential equation of batch grinding was proposed1 as a first approximation of the xYt surface.' A more general equation will be presented here, which appears to combine in a single statement many conclusions reached by experiment. A possible underlying mechanism is that the changing product fineness leads to changes in the particle crushing strength and in the probability of encounter with the crushing media.

Joule-THomson coefficients for two natural gases were determined at pressures up to 600 lb. per sq. in. throughout the temperature interval between 70" and 310°F. From these primary data and available information relating to the isobaric heat capacities of the components at infinite volume, the heat capacities of these gases were computed throughout the above-mentioned range of pressures and temperatures. The enthalpies of the gases were computed as a function of state and the results compared with values obtained by several methods of prediction currently available. Relatively small samples of these natural gases were available, together with their analyses, and the Joule-Thomson coeffi- The Joule-Thomson coefficients were determined by measuring the change in temperature resulting from the passage of the gas through a porous thimble with a known pressure difference and under such conditions that the process was substantially isonthalpic. The details of the apparatus employed for this purpose have been described.' It is believed that the changes in temperature and pressure were ascertained with an uncertainty of not more than 0.3 per cent. However, as a result of deviations from steady flow, it is probable that uncertainties as large as 2 per cent may exist in the measured Joule-Thomson coefficient. The gases utilized in this work were taken from high-pressure separators and were dried prior to use by passage over calcium chloride at pressures in excess of 300 lb. per sq. in. The gases were subjected to the conventional fractionation and Orsat analyses. The results are recorded in Table I. The composition is typical of gases from such sources, with the possible exception of the presence of significant quantities of carbon dioxide in each of the samples. MINERAL industry activities have not been seriously hampered by a lack of men with higher training. The balance between opportunities for employment and advancement and available personnel has been a happy one, with enough competition to stimulate effort but not the unfortunate conditions arising from an overabundance. of employment seekers. Nearly all mineral industry educational institutions have been concerned about the falling enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses of study during the past decade. But industry has drawn upon a supply of many types of technically trained men apart from those who prepared their careers specifically in the mineral industry. Some schools have made this possible by uniting geologists, mineralogists, and others with students in mining and engineering. On the other hand, some schools have combined their department of mining engineering with an over-all engineering department and continue to send their graduates into the mineral industry by another route. On the whole, this seems to be a good trend and is likely to result in men better trained for current problems than would have been possible under the older rigid curricula.

iV preliminary X-ray and metallographic survey of the ternary system Bi-In-Te revealed that the following isopleths could form quasibinary systems: InTe-Bi, InTe-InBi, InTe-BizTe3, and InzTe3-Bi2Te3. The nature of the InTe-Bi phase diagram was established by Bologna and Peretti.' This article presents the results of an investigation of the InTe-InBi system by thermal analysis, X-ray methods, and metallographic examination. The bismuth and tellurium were bought from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The tellurium had the following spectrographic analysis: 0.0001 pct Mg, 0.0001 pct Si, 0.0001 pct Fe, 0.0002 pct Al, and 99.999+ pct Te (by difference). The bismuth assayed: 0.0001 pct Mg, 0.0001 pct Pb, 0.0001 pct Fe, 0.0001 pct Cu, and 99.999+ pct Bi (by difference). The indium was obtained from the Indium Corp. of America and contained 0.002 pct Cu, 0.006 pct Pb, 0.01 pct Sn, 0.01 pct Zn, and 99.97+pct In. The alloys were made by melting the required proPortions of InTe and in evacuated, sealed quartz

THIS investigation was undertaken to determine, if possible, the relation between static and dynamic tensile tests as measured by the work required to break test specimens slowly, in a tensile testing machine, and rapidly, by means of a falling weight. It was hoped that the investigation would throw some light on the role played by ductility under different rates of application of load. FIG. 1.-STRESS-STRAIN DIAGRAM. Phase diagrams of the titanium-rich portion of the ternary systems from 0 to 10 wt pct Al and 0 to 1 wt pct 0, N, and C were determined. Micrographic analysis of annealed high purity arc melted alloys was the principal method of investigation and was supplemented by X-ray diffraction. TITANIUM-ALUMINUM alloys exhibit excellent properties, particularly for elevated temperature use. For this reason, the Materials Laboratory, Wright Air Development Center, sponsored an investigation of the effect of the interstitially soluble contaminants, oxygen! nitrogen, and carbon, on the Ti-A1 system. Using high purity arc melted alloys and micrographic analysis of annealed samples as the chief method of investigation, titanium-rich partial phase diagrams were determined for the ternary systems. Experimental Procedure Materials: The titanium used in the preparation of the alloys was iodide crystal bar (99.9+ pct pure) produced by the New Jersey Zinc Co. and Foote Mineral Co. The aluminum was obtained from the Aluminum Co. of America in the form of sheet. The given analysis was: Si, 0.0006 pct; Fe, 0.0005; Cu, 0.0022; Mg, 0.0003; Ca, <0.0006; Na, <0.0005; and Al, 99.99. High purity titanium dioxide purchased from the National Lead Co. was used in the preparation of the oxygen-bearing alloys. The spectrographic analysis of this material was as follows: SiO,, 0.07 pct; Fe,O,,, 0.002; A1,0,, <0.001; Sb,O,, <0.002; SnO,,, <0.001; Mg, <::0.001; Cb, <0.01; Cu, 0.0004; Pb, 0.002; Mn, <0.00005; W, <0.01; V, <0.002; Cr, <0.002; Ni, <0.001; and Mo, <0.002. Special spectroscopic graphite rod purchased from the National Carbon Co. was used in the preparation of the Ti-A1-C alloys. Alloy Preparation: Alloy ingots weighing 10 grams were melted in a nonconsumable tungsten electrode arc melting furnace using water-cooled copper hearths and a helium atmosphere. The arc was struck on a tungsten stud in the copper block to minimize contamination from the electrode. Details of the techniques have been reported.&apos;, &apos; Each ingot was inverted and remelted a minimum of four times to insure homogeneity, without opening the furnace. Remelting small control ingots of iodide titanium under similar conditions resulted in no measurable hardness increase, indicating contamination-free melting conditions were used. The alloy charges and resultant ingots were weighed to the nearest milligram. Only small weight losses were obtained upon melting, indicating that the actual compositions were very close to the nominal compositions. Check analyses substantiated this. Oxygen and nitrogen were added during ingot preparation as master alloys. An oxygen master alloy containing 25 wt pct 0 was prepared by melting iodide titanium and pressed titanium dioxide (40 pct 0) powder. The Ti-25 pct 0 alloy is more easily handled during weighing and charging than the pressed TiO, powder. Chemical analysis indicated that titanium-nitride received from an outside source contained large amounts of impurities (2.7 pct Ca). Therefore, a master alloy containing approximately 12 pct N was prepared by melting nitrided sponge titanium. As the sponge melted with difficulty, the alloy was diluted by addition of titanium to lower the melting point. The chemical analysis of the final alloy was 6.69 pct N. Both master alloys are friable and were used as —8 +16 mesh lumps resulting from crushing the ingots. NIelting the Ti-A1-0 and Ti-A1-N compositions five times produced homogeneous ingots. The preparation of homogeneous carbon-bearing alloys caused considerable difficulty. Alloys containing less than 1 pct C were prepared using spectrographic graphite rod, 1/8 in. diameter by 1/8 in. long. However, the graphite did not dissolve even with long melting times and many remelts. The ?/s in. pieces of graphite were used rather than powder because the low density powder is troublesome in arc melting.

The contribution of grain boundary shear to total elongation, CS/E&apos;, has been measured in an Al-Zn eu-tectoid alloy that was quenched from above the invariant temperature, then annealed at 250° C to a grain size of&apos; 1.8 p. At 250°C, ks/E&apos; is low at both high and low strain rates, but reaches a maximum, estimated as 60 pct at an intermediate rate of 5 X 10 per rnin. Rate sensitivity, as measured by the index m = a log a/a log E&apos;, follows the same trend, and furthermore the maximum values of m and -cur at approximately the same strain rate. This result, combined with the metallographic observation that boundary migration enhances boundary shearing, is interpreted as supporting a previous suggestion that the high rate sensitivity characterizing super-plasticity is the result of combined boundary shearing and migration. It is suggested that the latter event relieves stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that stress is governed largely by a viscous boundary shear. GrAIN boundary shear has been considered in relation to superplasticity in several recent papers.&apos; The problem has been to explain the high strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, and the variation of rate sensitivity with strain rate (E&apos;) and grain size (L). The requirements for superplasticity, small L and high T, suggest the reasonableness of an approach to high rate sensitivity involving grain boundary shear. Further support came from experiments on the A1-Cu eutectic alloy,&apos; where it was found that strain rate sensitivity of cast material annealed to produce an equiaxed, micron-size grain is always low; taking as an index of rate sensitivity m = a log a/a log <, m < 0.3. However, m in hot-worked alloy of comparable grain size can be as high as 0.7. In the cast and annealed material, each phase is a single crystal, the only boundaries are interphase boundaries, and it is, consequently, geometrically impossible for boundary shear to contribute to deformation in any major way. Other observations (for hot-worked material) were a-L at constant (low) strain rates and indications that the rate of recrystallization was enhanced as strain rate increased. As a result of this work, it was proposed that high rate sensitivity arises from a deformation mode of boundary shear associated with boundary migration. Migration serves to relieve stress concentrations at triple points, and smoothes boundaries so that they assume properties of fluid films. On the other hand, the low rate sensitivity observed at high and low strain rates reflects deformation of bulk material. Measurement of the variation of grain boundary shear with strain rate and m have not yet been made. Such measurements are important, especially in view of a proposal, differing in detail from the above, that high m arises merely from a transition between a grain boundary shear mode of deformation at low rates to a transgranular mode at high rates.2&apos;4 In the present work, the contribution of boundary shear to total deformation is measured and in addition metallographic observations are made on surfaces of deformed specimens to look at the interaction between boundary shear and migration. The Al-Zn eutectoid alloy was chosen for its homogeneous, fine-grained structure, which is obtained readily without hot-working. It has also been the subject of a previous phenom-enologically directed study. EXPERIMENTAL Material. Compression specimens, cross section 4 by + in., length \ in., were machined from a sand-cast ingot of composition 77.5 wt pct Zn, 22.5 wt pct Al. (The melt was prepared from 99.9 pct Zn and 99.99 pct Al.) After homogenization at 375°C for 50 hr, the specimens were quenched in brine and removed before the heat evolution that accompanies de -composition of the high-temperature phase.5&apos;6 The resulting microstructure, see Fig. l(a), was too fine for grain boundary sliding to be easily studied; coarser structures were obtained by annealing for various times at 2 50°C. Annealing was terminated by a brine quench. Final average intercept lengths between all grain boundaries (both interphase and those lying in a phase), L, were: 0.5 p [annealed for 15 min, Fig. (a)], 0.8, 1.1, and 1.8 p [Fig. l(b)l. Testing Procedure. An Instron machine was used for most of the compressive deformation. Tests were of two types: those in which crosshead velocity was changed in steps to measure m as a function of strain rate15 and tests at constant velocity to a fixed (engineering) strain of -0.2 (20 pct). Stress reached a steady-state value (a) which was plotted, on a logarithmic scale, against log strain rate (E&apos;). An alternate and equivalent evaluation of m was to take the slope of the log o vs log 6 curve. Time at temperature before testing was 15 min. Strain rates covered by the Instron (4 x lo-&apos; to 4 x 10&apos; per min) were insufficient; at a higher rate of 5 x lo2 per min a gas-operated testing machine was used, the gas driving a piston to compress the specimen at a controlled velocity.&apos; To obtain points on the log a vs log E&apos; curve at low rates, specimens were compressed by a dead weight. strain rate was an average value computed by dividing strain at the end of test by loading time. In some tests strain was measured at fractions of the loading time; creep rate was found to be reasonably constant.

EVER since the Phoenicians roamed the known world in quest of metals to harden their helmets and precious metals and gems to adorn their ladies, many other nations have sought metals in the far corners of the earth. During the past 75 years American engineers have been among the foremost in seeking for and developing ore deposits. They have been responsible for many of the principal discoveries and for the application of modern methods to mines in the far comers of the earth. American mining engineers with a zest for travel and an insatiable appetite for metals have also introduced throughout the world many articles made of metal which we consider essential to everyday life. Production and consumption of these metals in many foreign countries has brought to these countries an increased standard of living and added tax revenue to their governments. But unfortunately engineers from this country are no longer given ready access to all the countries of the world. This is not only unfortunate for American engineers but also for the countries that have adopted the exclusion policies and especially so since time has proved that in countries where the American engineers have gradually been excluded there has been a significant decline in the progress of the mining industry. Removal of these barriers to professional men would aid immensely in the world-wide development of the mineral industries. New areas brought into production under the guidance of American engineers with their exceptional know-how would provide more jobs for nationals of the countries involved and a better standard of living for the nations as a whole.

The dynamic principal stresses induced within rock by an explosion under con fined conditions are analyzed for the case of blasting with one free face by applying the values of measured radial displacement, particle velocity and so on to equations derived from the theory of elasticity. The dynamic stresses on the free face are also calculated from the strain measured by wire strain gauges affixed on the free face. Some results obtained are briefly: 1) The maximum stress on the free face appeared at the intersection between the free face and the burden, and its magnitude was about twice as large as the magnitude of the tangential tensile stress imparted by the incident stress wave within the range related to the breakage by blasting. 2) The maximum value of the compressive stress near the free face was decreased due to the existence of the free face, while that of the tensile stress was increased. 3) At any point near the free face, the directions of the principal stresses in the r? plane using spherical coordinates with the origin at the center of the spherical charge, changed with time except in the direction of the burden. However, at another point near the explosion point where the principal stresses were mainly those stresses caused by the initial longitudinal wave, the directions of the principal stresses coincided with those of the coordinate used. 4) The maximum value of the tensile stress in the F direction was larger than those in the re plane at and near the free face. 5) The tensile stress caused by the Hopkinson effect appeared only near the burden. 6) It is presumed from the results of stress analysis that radial cracks will be produced in the rock mass near an explosion point, but with the approach of the free face, the directions of cracks curve towards a direction parallel to the free face. INTRODUCTION In order to investigate the mechanism of rock breakage by blasting, it is considered to be very im- portant to know how the stresses are generated and distributed within the rock by explosion of a confined charge. As part of a research program concerning the mechanism of rock breakage by blasting, the authors have already published papers on the detonation pressure produced at the inner surface of the charge hole1 and on the behavior of the dynamic stresses within rock caused by an explosion in the case where no free face existed.&apos; In this study the dynamic stresses on and near the free face have been investigated for the case of blasting with one free face. The mechanism of rock breakage in blasting is discussed in the light of these studies.

GEOGRAPHICAILY the industry of reducing and refining of copper continued to migrate from the .United States during 1931. While this country is losing the predominant position of its copper industry, our engineers still enjoy their pre-eminent position as leaders in the design and operation of the new plants being brought into production in the four quarters of the globe. Progress in the art, as indicated by the construction of the recently completed works, has not been revolutionary. Standard methods have been followed, augmented by novel features in flow-sheets demanded by the results of progress in the art of ore-dressing, and by reason of problems incidental to the peculiarities of the new ores being treated. Design and construction progress has likewise been orderly and without radical departure from less recent practice; new features in primary and secondary equipment being logical developments to provide for special conditions to keep abreast of improve¬ments in accessory apparatus. The new plants are being rapidly brought in without hazardous novelties and for the purpose of yielding the principal ingredient, copper, in as large a volume as it will he possible to market; the old United States procedure. In the meantime the domestic plants are shut down or operating at a very low capacity, threatened with untimely demise unless the metallurgist can extract and develop other valuable products from the ores. International agreements .and tariff protection may be a temporary reviving stimulant, but for many mines the days of profit will be numbered unless the ores can be made to yield as values the ingredients now being discarded. Invisible progress in this direction has been made during the past year, and it is to he hoped that time will prove that the outstanding progress of 1931 was in the development of processes for the ultimate recovery of by-products from copper ores, perhaps even relegating the value of the copper yield to secondary importance.

THIS process was reported upon by the Canadian Commission in 1904, and much detailed information was also given in a paper by Chief Engineer V. Engelhardt.1 Believing that some of the latest particulars of the process will be of interest, I submit the following data. At Gysinge in Sweden during the year ending May 31, 1906, from a fixed furnace giving 1 ton (2,240 lb.) of steel per tap, there were produced 950 tons of tool-steel and special steel ingots. . In carbon and iron tool-steels all the usual tempers were made. The bulk of this steel was made from charges composed of about 80 per cent of Swedish white pig-iron and 20 per cent. of steel-scrap. The percentage of carbon was regulated by the addition of briquettes. Other charges were made from Swedish white iron and steel-scrap. The average time taken per charge, for the year, when adding briquettes, was 7* hr., and the electric energy consumed was 1,128 units (kilowatt-hours) per ton. The average time per charge for white-iron and scrap charges was 5.5 hr., and the electric energy consumed was 886 units per ton. These consumptions include all time and energy lost from various causes, such as bad water-supply, ice, etc. It is quite ordinary practice to complete the charges with briquettes in 6.5 hr., and without briquettes in 5 hr., as shown by the following typical charges White pig-iron, 1,457; steel-scrap, 439; briquettes, 220; ferrosilicon (50 per cent. of silicon), 17 ; ferromanganese (80 per cent. of manganese), 15 lb. ; and aluminum, 1 oz.=
