A new method is described for the production of cold-bonded pellets using a hydraulic binder, such as portland cement. Large-scale pilot-plant tests have proved that self-fluxing pellets of high reducibility and good handling strength can be made by the method. Blast-furnace trials have shown that the pellets are an acceptable burden material, comparable with self-fluxing sinter or heat-hardened pellets. Economic factors of commercial-scale production are discussed. The Grangcold Pellet Process—for which patents have been applied or already granted in a number of coun-tries—uses a hydraulic adhesive such as portland cement, slag cements, pozzolanic cements, etc., for the production of cold-bonded pellets. The idea of using a hydraulic binder for the agglomeration of iron-ore fines is not new. Portland cement was proposed as an adhesive for cold-bonded iron-ore briquettes in patents granted more than 50 years ago.' In a report on the briquetting of iron-ore fines, published in Stahl und Eisen in 1959; it is stated that briquettes bonded with portland cement are used on a small scale at an ironwork in Germany. According to the report, the briquettes showed excellent strength in the blast furnace although their general use was made impossible because they required a long hardening time, during which they are sticky, soft, and difficult to store and handle. The Grangcold Pellet Process has overcome this particular disadvantage by mixing the balls with a suitable amount of the balling concentrate before storing them. The pellets are embedded in the concentrated during storing in such a way that they are isolated from each other and thus prevented from sticking together to form clusters. Thanks to the embedding concentrate, the pellets are subjected to a more or less uniform pressure from all sides which does not deform them. Thus, the mixture can be stored in a stockpile or in a bin until the pellets have hardened sufficiently. The concentrate is separated from the pellets by means of screening. The concentrate is returned to the balling operation and the pellets are either shipped to the blast furnace or stored for final hardening. The binder preferred for the Grangcold Pellett Process is portland-cement clinker, ground without the admixture of gypsum in order to avoid sulfur in the pellets as far as possible. Usually a 10% binder content is used. Two-thirds of the portland-cement clinker consist of lime and the rest is silica, alumina, and ferric oxide. Thus, self-fluxing or overbasic pellets are produced with this binder if the amount of silica in the concentrate used does not exceed 4%. The Grangcold Pellet Process was developed by the mineral Processing Laboratory of the Granges Co. Work started in 1963 with batch-scale tests. In 1966, a small pilot plant was put into operation in which 1800 tons of pellets were produced using 10% of rapid-hardening portland cement as a binder. Favorable results from a blast-furnace test with this batch led to the decision to erect a larger pilot plant which went into production in the summer of 1967. Since then, approximately 100,000 tons of cold-bonded pellets have been produced, mostly with 10% gypsum-free portland cement as a binder. Several full-scale blast-furnace trials have been performed with the pellets. The results of the trials indicate that the Grangcold pellets constitute a satisfactory blast-furnace feed. An industrial plant for the production of Grangcold pellets with a rated capacity of 1.5 million tpy is now under construction at the Granges Co.'s mine at Grangesberg. The plant will come into operation in the summer of 1970. Results from Laboratory Work Pellets made from iron-ore concentrate bonded with portland cement harden slowly and their handling is very critical until they have hardened enough to loose their stickiness. It is therefore especially important to study the progress of the hardening action and the factors influencing it. This is best achieved by investigating the relationship between the compressive strength of the cement-bonded pellets and the curing time under varied conditions. Aside from having a usable product and good mining conditions, the greatest asset for a profitable coal mining organization is an effective mine maintenance program. The first step in acquiring this is the presence of good mechanics-men who have a desire to be mechanics and who want to know more about the design and control of the machines in their charge. The knowledge and ability to be found in a good mechanic is the result of ambition, curiosity, and determination. With these qualities as a start, the aspiring mechanic can launch his career if he begins learning all he can about mechanics, electricity, and hydraulics. The path is rough, but the goal is rewarding. Mining machinery probably absorbs as much or more abuse than any other heavy equipment in use today. And when one considers the conditions under which much of the repair work must be done, it can be seen that the mine operator needs the best of men and tools to perform the service. MOTORS AND POWER SUPPLY Mining machines, from their inception, have utilized the electric motor; and down through the years of mechanization, this power source has undergone many changes to better adapt it to the job. The first motors used were large, heavy-framed, open d-c motors (direct current), using a series or shunt winding. A motor having one or more field coils connected in series and themselves in series with the armature, is called a series motor (Fig. 1). The series motor had the advantage of quickly developing starting torque, and it was, and still is, the best motor for locomotive or shuttle car tramming service. The series motor, however, speeds up as the load is reduced and, if not properly controlled, can overspeed. The shunt motor, as its name implies, has one or more field coils in

THE general conception of a mine model is that of a three-dimensional object representing the mine workings, the orebody and the country rock of a particular property. Its chief uses have been to make it easier to understand the mine and to serve as a basis for the arguing of legal questions. Fayol endeavored to use mine models in a different way and to all students of subsidence "Fayol's dome theory" is of decided interest. We have more recently the suggestion of Young and Stoek of the University of Illinois, who1 suggest the use of models as a means of studying the problem. Prof. Henry Briggs, of the University of Edinburgh and Herriott Watt College, also makes use of models to determine the effects of bending at the edges of extensive workings.2 It is interesting to note that civil engineers are taking a decided interest in the application of models and the principles of dynamic similarity to the solution of their problems. The Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers for 1930 contain an elaborate article by Benjamin F. Groat,3 who says, in his opening remarks: "Every engineer should know and understand that a model constructed in accordance with Newton's theory of similarity is not only the means for reproducing the complexities of flow, or other mechanical action, on a small scale, but that models may be made the best means of designing works of great magnitude. In the present state of knowledge, a properly constructed and properly tested model will answer the difficult questions of hydrodynamics much more quickly and accurately than the most profound mathematical analyses." A study of P. W. Bridgman's book on Dimensional Analyses leads one to arrive at the same conclusion.

This symposium is designed to marshal a state-of-the-art account of approaches and solutions to problems arising out of waterlogging and salinization in the world's largest irrigation system which was dismembered by legal beheading of the Eastern Rivers under the lndus Waters Treaty of 1960. In this introduction, the geological and historical backgrounds of surface waters and groundwaters in the Indus Basin are presented with a summary of remedial measures undertaken and proposed to combat waterlogging and salinization. At a time when water-resource planning is proceeding on a continental scale, a study devoted solely to the Indus River Basin may seem to require an apologia. None is offered, however, for three major reasons: (1) Although the Indus is a single river basin, it is one of great magnitude and importance. The Indus River, which comes from Himalayan sources to form part of the great Indo-Gangetic Plain drainage system, is vital to agriculture and hydroelectric power in the thickly populated northern subcontinent of Indo-Pakistan. (2) The Indus has become a plexus of extraordinary problems since the dismemberment of the world's largest irrigation system of which it was a part. The break-up of this system occurred with the legal beheading of the Eastern Waters under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960. (3) Th River Basin has been the target of a Herculean effort to contain the twin encroachments of waterlogging and salinization that now threaten it with a shortage of fresh water. The British irrigation system of barrages and canal on the Indus was a venture admirable in conception. Unfortunately, it is now a legacy burdened with unwanted consequences due to interference with the hydrological regimen, particularly the rise of water table occasioned by leakage. To cope with this situation, there has been a possibly unprecedented concentration of domestic and international engineering and scientific talent on the Indus and its problems (about a score of organizations by recent count). To marshal a state-of-the-art account of their approaches and solutions is the purpose of this Symposium. The coordinated effort now being made on a variety of fronts under the general supervision of West Pakistan Water and Power Authority (WAPDA) is directed toward the modification and control of interactions and relationships between geological materials — soils, water and its salt balance, and air —in what has been termed a huge "underground lake" in an alluvial basin. The problem is an intriguing one in that a highly complicated case history of river-course changes visible in the present surface must be projected downwards through Recent and Pleistocene sediments in order to decipher the environmental controls of deposition in terms of vertical and lateral variations in lithology and patterns. Such studies must be extended to compaction, deformation, and fabrics of the alluvium. Geohydrology is often defined as groundwater hydrology. As employed herein, it includes the distribution, quality, and behavior of surface and subsurface waters, including their evolution, vagaries, and geological, climatological, and botanical milieux." GEOGRAPHY The Indus (Sanskrit, Sindhu = river) rises at nearly 17,000 ft above the sea in the glaciers on the northern slopes of Kailas Parbat, Tibet. It is about 1800 miles long and has a total drainage area estimated at 372,000 sq miles. The average discharge is 196,000 cfs at mouth. Leaving the Plateau of Tibet, the river flows at a level which is miles above the sea, and in places miles below Himalayan peaks, in a structurally controlled northwestward course. Only in recent years has any practical headway been made in the application of aerial photography to geological problems, and up to the present time its principal value to the geologist and mining engineer has been in "areal geology;" i. e., the study of formations as revealed at the surface. The object of this paper is to set forth briefly the principal advantages that may be derived from aerial photographic data in geological work and to serve in a measure as a guide to those who may be contemplating its use. Geophysical prospecting has for object the locating of mineral under the surface. Inasmuch as the geologist's chief complaint in life is a dual one—inability to see under the surface and inability to visualize comprehensively what he does see on top of the ground—geophysical prospecting coupled with aerial photography should do much to lessen his burdens. To what extent aerial photography can be made a useful adjunct to geophysical prospecting remains to be proved, but the inference drawn here is that it holds many alluring possibilities. To avoid disappointments, it should be stated at the outset that to the geologist or mining engineer an aerial photograph or mosaic is only a tool, the efficient use of which he must set out to master. Upon his skill and ingenuity in applying it to particular problems will depend largely the value of the results that he will obtain. Under the most favorable conditions an aerial mosaic, or even a few loose photographs, because of the exceptionally comprehensive oversight which they afford of field data, such as dips and strike observations at isolated outcrops, local indications of faulting, mineral and fossil finds, greatly facilitate study and correlation, save much tedious foot work, and may repay their cost many times. Even so, types of country may be found where the most skillful use of the best of pictures will produce results so meager as to render the cost of aerial photography entirely unwarranted. Between these two extremes will be found endless variations and possibilities. Hence no set rules can be promulgated. The safest procedure is to treat each case as a separate problem and to carefully weigh the relative advantages and shortcomings of aerial photography before embarking on its use.

THe conditions that make necessary the mechanical ventilation of the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Go. are due to a number of causes, all of which are incidental to the depth at which mining operations are now carried on, The main object to be accomplished, of course, is the reduction of the temperature and humidity of the air in the working places. Ventilation fans, both surface and underground, have been used for many years, but increasing depth has made the problem much more difficult. Further improvement in both ventilation equipment and methods, therefore, became necessary; and it is the purpose of this paper to describe the work planned and done under the improvement program. The mines of the district have been frequently described in various technical publications, so a description is unnecessary here. From a mine-ventilation viewpoint, compared with coal-mine ventilation systems, the problem is complicated by the fact that the workings to be ventilated are situated on a large number of steeply dipping veins which frequently intersect and are faulted, and also by the fact that the extent, or existence, of orebodies is not definitely known in advance of actual development work. For these reasons ventilation work cannot be planned in advance of actual operations, nor can such regular systems of ventilation as are used in working the more uniform and continuous bodies of coal be developed. When operations are conducted at a normal rate, about 10,000 miners are employed on two shifts, so that about 5000 men will be underground at one time. But as ventilation is necessary to reduce high temperature and humidity due, mainly, to natural causes, the quantity of air per man per minute is not a governing consideration in determining ventilation requirements. Most important among the numerous sources of heat and humidity in the mines are: heat generated during decay of mine timber; heat and humidity given off by mine rock and water; heat generated by oxidation of sulfide minerals; heat given off by electrical equipment; heat generated by mine fires (in certain localities).

The efficiency of the reverberatory furnace operation in producing. slags of 1020 copper content depends on the mixing and flow conditions in the bath. Radioactize-tmcer tests have indicated the jkaction of bath volume engaged inflow and the mixing conditions in the bath. The factors controlling the flow pattern of slag have been classified as laminar transfer flow, natrsral convection, and flou, due to the rapid addition or removal of slag.. Similarity criteria for model studies have been developed. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper begins with the smelting of either flotation concentrates, or direct-smelting ores which have been partially roasted to calcines. These materials are generally smelted in a reverberatory furnace, Fig. 1, and separate into two liquid phases, a sulfide matte and an iron silicate slag. he matte is tapped and subsequently reduced to metallic copper in a converter, while the reverberatory slag is usually discarded without any further treatment. Molten slag from the converting operation is returned intermittently to the reverberatory in order to recover its high copper content (1 to 3 pct Cu). The reverberatory furnace is about 115 ft long by 30 ft wide. In general, the solid charge is fed at intervals through openings along the sides of the roof and forms sloping banks from which the molten materials trickle down into the bath; the charge banks extend over a length of about 70 ft from the firing wall. The depth of the slag and matte layers varies from smelter to smelter; in the Noranda furnaces, the slag depth is 24 to 30 in., while the depth of matte at the taphole is about 20 in. Apart from smelting, the functions of the reverberatory are to recover most of the copper content in the converter slag by physical and chemical interaction with the furnace bath, and to provide adequate time for optimum separation between matte and slag. The efficiency of these operations depends on the mixing and flow conditions in the bath and is reflected on the copper losses in the slag. In the present study, the reverberatory furnace is considered as an open-channel chemical reactor and the driving forces for material transport through the bath are examined by means of flow and mathematical models. FLOW CONDITIONS IN THE REVERBERATORY FURNACE To facilitate the study of mixing conditions in continuous-flow reactors, two idealized patterns of flow have been accepted by workers in this field.' The term "backmix" flow is used to describe complete and instantaneous mixing in the reactor (perfect mixing); all particles have the same chance of leaving the system, independently of their time of entrance, and the fluid is uniform in composition throughout the vessel. On the other hand, "plug" flow, or "piston" flow, assumes that a fluid element moves through the reactor without overtaking or mixing with fluid entering at an earlier or later time. In addition to the two idealized patterns of flow, "deadwater" flow accounts for that portion of the fluid which is moving so slowly that it may be assumed to be stagnant. According to the definition by evensppiel,' the cut-off point between active and stagnant fluid may be taken as material which stays in the vessel for a period twice the mean residence time. The flow patterns in real vessels may be approximated by a combination of the above flows. Thus, the vessel is assumed to consist of interconnected flow regions with various modes of flow existing between them. The flow pattern may be determined directly from the flow paths of fluid through the essel. -However, the difficulty of obtaining and interpreting such information has led to the alternate approach of determining the residence time distribution of fluid elements by means of stimulus-response studies. The stimulus is provided by introducing a tracer in the inlet stream and the response by the record of the change in tracer concentration in the exit stream from the reactor. Such tests have been conducted in glass tank furnaces using either chemical7"9 or radioactive tracers1'-'' and, in one case, experiments have been reported for a metallurgical furnace.'"

The diffusion coefficients and electrotralzsport mobilities of aluminum, gallium, and arsenic have been determined in molten germanium with the capillary reservoir technique. The diffusion coefficients are slightly higher than those determined by the solidification technique of Brirton et a1.1 It was found that aluminium and gallium migrate to the cathode in molten germanium) whereas arsenic migrates to the anode under an electric field. A possible technique for producing p-n junctions by means of electric field freezing is discussed in view of the experimental data. In the past decade or so the literature has abounded with articles concerning the solid-state properties of the semiconducting elements germanium and silicon. It is surprising by comparison how little has been published concerning the liquid-state properties of these materials. In the production of doped germanium or silicon the diffusion coefficient of the dopant in liquid germanium or silicon is an important quantity. Yet, to the best of our knowledge, no one has ever made a direct measurement of the diffusion coefficient of solutes in either molten germanium or silicon. A number of authors'-4 have determined some diffusion coefficients by the indirect technique developed by Burton et al.1 This technique appears to give numbers of the correct order of magnitude but it does depend upon a number of assumptions in the analysis and also requires prior knowledge of the viscosity of the melt. In the present work a more direct measure of the diffusion coefficients of arsenic, gallium: and aluminum in molten germanium has been made. It has been shown independently by two groups of authors5, 6 that, when an electric current is passed through the interface of a solidifying metal containing an impurity, the resulting electrotransport in the liquid boundary layer at the interface offers a mechanism for control over the redistribution of the impurity accompanying the solidification. These authors show that the degree of control is proportional to the mobility, U of the impurity atoms in the liquid boundary layer, where the mobility is defined as the drift velocity relative to the solvent per unit electric field. In principle the results apply to the solidification of a doped semiconductor and offer an interesting technique for control of the doping of a semiconductor. In the present work the mobilities of aluminum, gallium, and arsenic were determined in molten germanium in order to evaluate the potential usefulness of electro-transport as a technique for solute control when applied to the solidification of doped germanium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Both the diffusion coefficients and the mobilities were measured using high-purity alumina capillaries and a resistivity technique for analysis. A schematic diagram of the electrotransport apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 and the details of the cell design are shown in Fig. 2. For the mobility experiments electrical contact with the bottom of the capillary was made with graphite, as shown in Fig. 2. In order to prevent electrical contact with the melt the graphite was coated with a thin layer of alumina using a plasma spray torch. The cell assembly, a graphite electrode, and another assembly containing two blank capillaries were fastened to the lavite disk shown in Fig. 1. To make a run the system was evacuated and the doped germanium was outgassed at the operating temperature of 1030°C. The cell and blank capillaries were then submerged beneath the melt and a slightly positive pressure of helium was introduced to fill them. After passing current through the cell for a given time the cell and blank capillaries were raised from the melt and the furnace was shut off. The temperature of the cells dropped below the freezing point of germanium within 1 to 2 min after the furnace was shut off.

Utilization of magnetite-bearing taconite from the great Mesabi range of Minnesota is fast becoming a major industry in the state. The planning and early development stages of taconite processing projects have been de-scribed1-3 and an excellent discussion has appeared recently4 concerning the current mining, crushing, concentrating, and pelletizing techniques of the Reserve Mining Co., whose operations lie entirely within the Eastern Mesabi district. The present paper will deal only with some of the geological aspects of taconite utilization in the district, with emphasis placed upon some of the common mineralogical and textural features of the tacon-ites currently being mined or stripped and how these factors generally affect the potential recovery of the iron from the metamorphosed Biwabik iron-formation. The generalized geologic setting of the Eastern Mesabi district is presented in Fig. 1. The small circles on the geologic map, adapted from Grout and Broderick,3 mark the location of drill holes that were available for inspection during this study through the courtesy of Reserve Mining and Erie Mining Cos. The cores from these holes were divided into stratigraphic units and examined for their mineral content. Typical mineral associations and grain fabrics were also determined from hundreds of thin and polished sections. Available metallurgical tests made it possible to determine the probable response of a given variety of taconite to magnetic concentration. The longitudinal section of Fig. 1, projected along the strike of the iron formation, presents the simple stratigraphy of the area. It also shows the uniformly thick nature of the iron formation members in the district as well as a somewhat abrupt thickening of the formation to the west of the probable fault. The stratigraphy of these precambrian rocks has been described5-' elsewhere and need only be briefly reviewed. Historically, the oldest rocks unit, the Giants Range granite (Algoman) was covered by the Animikie group of sediments (Middle Huronian?), consisting of the Pokegama, Biwabik, and Virginia formations. Outcrops of the Pokegama quartzite are locally distributed along the northern limit of the Biwabik iron formation, but they are too limited to depict on the geologic map of Fig. 1. The effects of the intrusion of several small diabase sills within the Virginia and Biwabik formations are obscure because all of these rocks have been subsequently highly metamorphosed, mainly by the Duluth gabbro. The emplacement of the transgressing Duluth gabbro (Middle Keweenawan) and that of numerous peg-matitic veins in the iron formation8 has resulted in extensive contact and metasomatic metamorphism which has locally reconstituted the previously existing minerals of the Biwabik formation, in large part quartz and magnetite, into a wide variety of silicate mineral assemblages9 that have a profound effect upon the re coverability of the remaining magnetite. The entire region has subsequently been eroded and largely buried beneath Pleistocene glacial deposits. Structurally, the strike of the gently dipping Animikie group generally parallels the elongate outcrop pattern of the Biwabik iron formation on the map of Fig. 1. The Animikie group most commonly dips from 5" to 15" to the south-southeast. In this area, the Duluth gabbro pluton is somewhat sill-like, dipping about 30" to the southeast. Projecting these present structures upward, it seems probable that the gabbro once extended over the underlying Animikie group in the Eastern Mesabi district. SELECTION AND PRESENTATION OF DATA Because of the locally intense metamorphic activity in the district, mineralogical variations within the magnetite-bearing taconites are commonly abrupt, both vertically and laterally. Consequently it is difficult to select a single hole or small group of holes whose cores will be entirely representative of all of the district. Two holes have been selected, however, that in a general way represent mineralogical and textural variations that are likely to be encountered in both the eastern and western parts of the district. These recently drilled holes were chosen for discussion because it was possible to log the core and then to place the sample intervals at stratigraphic boundaries prior to preparation of the core for magnetic tube tests.

This .study defines the basic mechanism of the mis-cible displacerrzent of oil and writer from porous Medici by various water-driven alcohol .slugs. Three distinct alcohol slug processes were .studied. Considerable data concerning the quanity of alcohol required for oil recovery were also obtained. All data were obtained in a 1-in. diameter, 100-ft long, unconsolidated core. The porosity of this system was 35 per cent. and the permeability was approxitrlately 4 darcies. Total core pore volume wax 5,716 cc. All displacements were conducted at a constant injection rate of 5 to 6 cc//min, which corresponds to a frontal advance of 5 ro 6 ft/hr. The first portion of this paper is concerned with 111 use of one alcohol—isopropyl—a\. the slug material. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is completely miscible with both oil rind water; however, miscibility of the threc-component systems, oil-water-IPA, requires a relutively. high concentration of IPA. Hence, the displocement is not of the misoible type unless the IPA concentration is maintained above some critical value. A slug of IPA equal to only 13.5 per cent of the pore volume was jound to be sufficient to obtain complete recover?, of residua1 naphtha. In later studies two distinct process variations were developed. The firsr of these utilized methyl alcohol (MA) and IPA as slug materials. It was shown that methyl alcohol may he substituted for IPA at the front and rear of the slug with no loss of oil recovery. A .slug of 4 per cent MA-4 per cent IPA-4 per cent MA was sufficient for complere oil recovery. Because MA is considerably cheaper than IPA, this represents an important step toward economic application. A .second process variation used normal butyl alcohol (nBA) and MA as the composite slug, the nBA segnzent being injected first. This technique requires the smallest total slug size (approximately 10 per cent) of all processes studied. The high cost of nBA, however, precludes commercial application. It is possible that this basic process, subject to changes of alcohol type, may lead to a commrercicil process. INTRODUCTION Within the last 10 years, considerable study has been devoted to the general mechanics of miscible phase dis- placements in porous media. These studies have. in general, dealt with two-component displacernent. All reported field trials to date have been modified gas drives of one type or another. These utilize either lean gas at high pressure, rich gas at lower pressure or an LPG slug. The irreducible water content of the reservoir remains immobile during these processes. Although these techniques hold great promise. certain drawbacks do exist. Poor areal sweep efficiency, inherent in any displacement having a highly unfavorable mobility ratio, is one disadvantage. Furthermore, the miscibility of all processes which use gas is dependent on pressure. These pressure limitations may prohibit application to shallow reservoirs. There are also many areas where large quantities of LPG and natural gas are not readily available. These factors emphasize the need for improved techniques. The alcohol slug process is also a miscible-phase displacement process. It differs from the previously mentioned two-component techniques, however, in that both the reservoir oil and water are displaced by the slug. This behavior is a consequence of the miscibility of certain oil-water-alcohol systems. In the simplest case, a relatively small volume (slug) of an alcohol (such as isopropyl) is injected into the system. Water is then used to drive the slug through the medium. Thus. three components—-alcohol. oil and connate water-—exist at the front side of the slug. Miscibility is obtained at some alcohol concentration, this being dependent on the solubility of the particular system. Miscibility is maintained within the slug until the alcohol concentration falls below that value required to maintain miscibility. When miscibility is lost, the process reverts to a water flood. Certain inherent benefits of this technique are apparent. High pressures are not necessary to obtain miscibility in these liquid systems. Furthermore, water is a more desirable driving agent than gas because of the improved mobility ratio and the attendant improvement in areal sweep efficiency. The main disadvantage is, of course, the relatively high cost of alcohols. The use of an alcohol slug to recover reservoir oil is not a new idea." ' However, this process has received only limited study, presumably due to the lack of industrial interest caused by the seemingly prohibitive cost of alcohols. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of the displacement of oil and water by various alcohol slugs and to develop process modifications aimed toward possible commercial application.

Professor Jenney has performed a notable service in presenting this summary of the steadily increasing body of observation on the presence of carbon in rocks of all kinds and its probable influence upon ore-deposition, and in formulating a mode of comparing directly the relative resistance of minerals to oxidation, as well as their reducing-power, and the protective action which minerals having higher reducing-powers exert in preventing the oxidation of associated minerals which possess relatively lower affinities for oxygen. I have had an opportunity of observing a vein which falls within the scope of his interesting discussion. The vein at Ku Shau Tzu, Mongolia, lies directly across a contact of limestone and overlying bituminous shales. Probably it occupies a compression-fissure. The shale has been reduced to such a condition of' non-coherence that much of it can be crushed in the hand, producing a handful of angular fragments resembling beech-nuts in shape and size. In the limestone the metals are principally in argentiferous galena with some pyrite and blende; but the latter two are very subordinate in quantity to the galena. In short, it is an every-day lead-vein in limestone, with siliceous limestone gangue. It is one of those veins in which the ore is not continuous, but consists of a band in the country-rock in which seams of lead sulphide begin at one wall and cross in a bent form, increasing in thickness, to the other wall, where they thin out and end. This may indicate torsional stress, but the shape of the lenses points to some other action. They often ran nearly parallel to the hanging-wall for a considerable distance and crossed the vein on a moderate angle, but turned sharply along the vein on approaching the foot-wall. The intermediate rock contains nodules, bunches and specks of ore, and the lenses vary exceedingly in size, shape and position in the vein.

ALTHOUGH nearly 10 pct of the total tonnage of coal produced annually within the United States is handled by bulk freighters on the Great Lakes, very little of the detail connected with it has been published other than occasional newspaper stories and publication of tonnage statistics. Of the total tonnage floated on the Lakes each year some 10,000,000 is stored and distributed from the port of Duluth Superior, at the western end of Lake Superior commonly known as the Head of the Lakes. This port has the largest single area concentration of coal docks in the world. Since this area contains the largest ore docks, the largest movable material handling bridge, the largest and highest grain elevator and the largest coal briquetting plant in the world, it is entirely fitting and proper that here also should be located the largest coal dock and what we believe to be the worlds largest clam shell. Of the sixteen coal docks operated by ten companies, five are owned and operated by the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. which has two docks on the Superior, Wis. water-front and three docks in Duluth, Minn. It is with these five docks that we are primarily concerned. GENERAL HISTORY In the summer of 1871 a small sailing vessel entered the harbor of Duluth Superior with the first commercial coal cargo. All the coal brought up that first year did not amount to more than 3000 tons. During the year 1877 the first dock equipped for handling coal was built in Duluth. Coal receipts increased to 52,785 tons in 1879 the first year for which an official record was kept. Since then the volume of water-borne coal to the Head of the Lakes steadily increased to a maximum of 12,688,321 tons in the year 1923. This tonnage was nearly equalled in the year 1927 and the next highest tonnage recent year was in 1946 when 10,105,703 tons were unloaded. The average annual bring-up over a ten year period 1938 to 1947 was 8,605,231 tons. Approximately 30 pct of the coal unloaded at the Head of the Lakes is handled over the docks of the North Western-Hanna Fuel Co. Competition of other fuels coupled with expansion of coal fields in the mid-west have held coal receipts for Duluth-Superior at a relatively constant figure during the last eight years although the total tonnage of coal floated on the Great Lakes has more than doubled in the past 25 years. The Frood mine (Fig. 1) is 2½ miles north of Sudbury, at a general elevation of 1000 ft. above sea level. It includes the original Frood location, which was the No. 3 mine of the Canadian Copper Co., and the adjoining Frood Extension, which until 1929 belonged to the Mond Nickel Co. Mine Openings The mine is operated from two vertical shafts and one underground incline shaft. No. 3, for men, supplies and ore, is a vertical six-compartment shaft in the footwall of the south mining area and extends froin surface to a depth of 3045 ft. No. 4 is a vertical three-compartment shaft, 2500 ft. north of No. 3 and adjacent to the north mining area. It extends from surface to a depth of 3345 ft., and is used exclusively for hoisting ore. No. 5 shaft, inclined at 65' to the horizontal and of three compartments, is near No. 4 and extends from the 2600-ft. level to 77 ft. below the 3100 level. It is used for development below the 2800 level. The ventilation shaft, No. 1, with which this paper is directly concerned, will be described fully in the following pages. Mining Methods The orcbody is laid out in 80-ft. sections at right angles to the gcneral strike and numerically indicated from the southern extremity toward the north. Each section consists of a 45-ft. stope and a 35-ft. pillar, extending the full width of the orebody. Pillars and stopes are superimposed from level to level. The present mining territory is divided into two vertical areas, a north and a south area. Both areas have the same number of stopes on each level, the two areas being separated by 10 sections to be mined later. In a few instances, at the ends of the south area, where the orebody has narrowed, longitudinal stopes are used, of more than the usual 45-ft. width. BEFORE the war we often heard the term "Big Business." And there were complaints of the ills and abuses attributed to bigness in business. Although there were examples where the small businessmen spoke for their rights and sought protection from the bigger ones, it has only been in recent war years that a tendency has developed definitely to divide the business of our nation into the big and the small. In some cases, those with an eye to the political value of the vastly greater number of small businessmen of the country have fomented this division by hurrying to the protection of these more numerous voters, and intentionally or not have emphasized in their writings and verbal attacks any and all differences of these interests that could either be found or fabricated to, suit the occasion. It has become another example of breaking the people into classes and thus setting up the basis for the claims of one class against another, and the subsequent demand for legislation and Governmental aid. The terms "big" and "small" are purely relative. One businessman, employing a hundred men, told me recently he did not know which adjective would be more appropriately applied to his operation. He did not know whether he should join the small operators' group that had been organized, or should consider himself big. He said that his present plant seemed big to him when he looked back to its humble beginning many years ago with a couple of men in two rooms. Yet, when compared with many of his competitors who employ thousands, his was small. He did add, however, that he probably became big one day a few years ago when the union moved in and organized his employees.

IN THE last few years, there have been developed at the plant of the Nichols Copper Co., Laurel Hill, Borough of Queens, New York City, improvements in electrolytic copper refining by the series system that have materially increased the flexibility and economy of that system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss, as of interest to refiners and to those who have copper to refine, as well as to the engineering profession in general, the changes that have taken place resulting in wider application and increased efficiency of the series system. AT first sight, the platinum group of metals seem of little import to we, the people," although actually the life of the common man is much influenced by them; this influence is usually indirect, hence his lack of knowledge and interest. He generally associates platinum with high-class jewelry and lets it go at that. Were 11e to go deeper, he would find that platinum metals play their part in his food supply, his clothing. his health, his transportation, his home. And the technical man is in general only slightly better informed, for he usually does not realize how necessary platinum metals are in the manufacture of the many construction materials and chemical products with which he is acquainted. Certainly, our daily lives would be profoundly affected if platinum were suddenly to become unavailable.
