The fourth, Mr. Hewett's paper, on "Cycles In Metal Production" has been issued as Technical Publication 183, and an abstract of it was published on page 162 of last month's issue. TAYLOR: I would like to ask Mr. Veasey whether the control of oil in pools includes royalties, and, if so, in case of a new pool how are you going to control, or rather how are you going to describe the limits of that pool?

IN September 1937, the Ohio Copper Co. inaugurated the treatment of its copper-bearing mill tailings at Lark, Utah. These tailings had been accumulated during the regular operation of the Ohio Copper mine and mill over the period 1007 to 1019. Gravity concentration had been employed except for a comparatively short period in 1919, when flotation was used. The ore milled during that period assayed about I per cent Cu. The chief copper mineral, chalcocite, was dissemi-nated in a shattered quartzite, mainly along fracture or cleavage planes. The quartzite gangue was extremely hard and grinding to liberation resulted in excessive sliming of the "sooty" chalcocite, with consequent high tailings losses. Recovery on the seven million tons treated was prob-ably less than 6o per cent of the total copper content. As early as 1918, attempts had been made to sample the dump. In 1928, a com-plete sampling program was undertaken. The sampling consisted of seventy-four 5-in. post auger holes drilled to the full depth of the dump at regular intervals of 250 ft. Each 10-ft. portion thereof com-prised a sample for analysis. Each sample was screened, rolled, divided into three parts, dried and assayed. The reject was retained for testing purposes. From the depth of the auger holes a contour map of the dump was plotted, Fig. 1, which gives percentages of tonnage and copper content.

NOT much activity has been evident during the past year in the establishment of co-operative scholarships but the interest among the coal-mining companies is more pronounced than ever. This is apparent from the replies received to a letter sent out by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to over 120 coalmine operating officials. With that letter was forwarded a bulletin issued by the school of mineral industries of The Pennsylvania State College entitled ?Industrial Scholarships ? a Partnership of Industry and Education.? In that circular was outlined the need for trained men in the war and postwar world, and particularly as such demands pertain to the growth of the mineral industries.

A study has been made of the growing, annealing, and diffusion parameters in PbSe, Pb1-ySnySe, and Pb1-xSnxTe. Single crystals of these materials have been grown using the Bridgman technique. For all of the above materials the as-grown crystals are p type with high carrier densities. To reduce the carrier concentration and increase the carrier mobility, the samples are annealed either isothermally or by a two-zone method. From isothermal anneals, the liquidus-solidus boundary on the metal-rich side of the stoichiometric composition has been obtained for some alloys of Pb1-xSnxTe and on both the metal- and seleniunz-rich sides for PbSe and alloys of Pbl-ySnySe. In Pbo.935 Sno.065 Se carrier concentrations as low as 5 x1016 Cm-3 and mobilities as high as 44,000 sq cm v-1 sec-1 at 77°K have been obtained. Inter diffusion parameters mere also studied. The ddiffusion experiments mere identical to the isothermal or two-zone annealing experiments except that the samples were removed prior to complete equilibration. The resulting p-n junction depths were determined by sectioning and thermal probing. Inter diffusion coefficients for various temperatures were calculated for both PbSe and Pb0.93Sn0.0,Se. RECENTLY, there has been considerable interest in the PbTe-SnTe and PbSe-SnSe alloys with the rock salt crystal structure. The unusual feature of these systems is the variation of energy gap EG with composition. Several investigations1-3 have shown that EG for the lead chalcogenides decreases as the tin content increases, goes through zero, and then increases again with further increase in tin content. The possibility of obtaining an arbitrary energy gap by selecting the composition is an especially attractive feature of these alloys for applications involving long-wavelength infrared detectors and lasers. In addition, some unusual magneto-optical, galvanomagnetic, and thermomag-netic effects should occur for alloys with low band gaps. If uncompensated low carrier density crystals can be obtained, then a small carrier effective mass, a large dielectric constant, and the resultant high carrier mobility should yield enormous effects at low temperature in a magnetic field. The relative variation of the energy gap with pressure should also be very large for these low gap materials. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide some information concerning the preparation of low carrier concentra- tion, high carrier mobility, and homogeneous single crystals with a predetermined alloy composition. I) DETERMINATION OF ALLOY COMPOSITIONS In all of the work described in this paper, the composition of lead and tin chalcogenides in the alloys was determined by electron microprobe analysis. Separate X-ray spectrometers are used to make simultaneous intensity measurements of the Pb La1 and Sn La1 lines emitted by the sample under excitation by a beam of 25 kev electrons focused to a spot about 2 µm in diam. These intensities are compared to the intensities of the same lines emitted by standards under the same conditions. The standards used are the terminal compounds of each pseudobinary system, i.e., PbTe and SnTe for Pbl-xSnxTe alloys, PbSe and SnSe for Pbl-ySnySe alloys. The composition of the sample is then obtained from theoretical calibration curves which relate the weight fractions of lead and tin in the alloy to the measured ratios of X-ray intensities for the sample and the standards. The lead and tin calibration curves for each alloy system were calculated by using corrections for backscattered electrons,4 ionization,5 and absorption,6 and assuming that the atom fraction of tellurium or selenium in the sample and standards is exactly +. Results obtained by using the microprobe are in good agreement with those obtained by wet chemical analysis. II) CRYSTAL GROWTH FROM THE VAPOR Early work on the vapor growth of PbSe was carried out by Prior.7 He used small chips of Bridgman-grown single crystals as the source material and frequently converted the whole charge of a few grams into one crystal. In the present work, vapor growth occurred using a metal-rich or chalcogenide-rich two-phased alloy powder as the source material. Small, nearly stoichiometric crystals are formed on the walls of the quartz tube. The procedure will now be described in detail. Initially, a 100-g charge containing (metal)o.51(chalco-genide)o 49 proportions or (metal)o.49(chalcogenide)o. 51 proportions of the as-received elements in chunk form are placed in a fused silica ampoule. After the ampoule is loaded, it is evacuated with a diffusion pump and sealed. The sealed ampoule is placed in the center of a vertical resistance furnace. The region containing the ampoule is heated to about 50°C above the liquidus temper-ature for the particular composition used. After about one-half hour at temperature, the elements are reacted and the molten material homogenized. The ampoule is quenched in water. The quenched ingot is crushed to a coarse powder for vapor growth experiments and to a fine powder for the isothermal annealing experiments which are discussed in a later section. The high- and low-cycle fatigue properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-MBOO, in columnar-grained and single-crystal forms were determined at room temperature. It was found that the fatigue lives of these materials were greatly affected by the size of preexisting cracks in MC-type carbides contained in the micro structure. Most of the data falls on two curves given by: (zN)'/A€= K, where Nf is the number of cycles to failure, Af is the total strain range, and K is a function of carbide size. No difference was observed in the fatigue behavior of the columnar-grained and single-crystal materials for the same MC carbide size. Matrix slip and crack initiation occurred at precracked MC carbides and, to a lesser extent, at micropores. Fatigue crack propagation was mainly in the Stage I mode, i.e., on cry stallo graPhic slip planes. The Stage I fracture in these materials was unusual in that distinct features were observed on the fracture surfaces. In high-cycle fatigue, these features resembled those commonly observed on the cleavage fracture surfaces of bcc and hcp materials. Yet, in this study, the cracks propagated slowly in a cyclic manner. In low-cycle fatigue, the Stage I facets contained equiaxed dimples, similar to those observed on the tensile fracture surfaces of ductile materials. These observations indicate that both local normal and shear stresses are involved in these Stage I fractures. A model is proposed to explain these results based on the weakening of the cohesive energy of the active slip planes by reversed shear deformation and the fracture of the bonds across the weakened planes by the local normal stress. RECENT developments in casting technology have produced cast nickel-base superalloys in columnar -grained and single-crystal forms.1'2 The tensile and creep properties of the nickel-base superalloy, Mar-M200, cast in these forms have been shown to be superior to the corresponding properties of the conventionally cast polycrystalline material.lp2 This improvement in properties results, in part, from the elimination of grain boundaries in the single crystals and the alignment of the grain boundaries parallel to the stress axis in the columnar-grained castings. As part of a program to evaluate the fatigue properties of nickel-base superalloys cast in single-crystal and columnar-grained forms, a study has been made of the cyclic deformation and fracture of Mar-M2OO at room temperature. M. fiFl I .hininr Mpmher AIMF ic ^pninr Rocoarrh Accn^iata anH I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The composition range of Mar-Ma00 in weight percent is: 8 to 10 Cr, 9 to 11 Co, 11.5 to 13.5 W, 0.75 to 1.25 Cb, 1.75 to 2.25 Ti, 4.75 to 5.25 Al, 0.01 to 0.02 B, 0.03 to 0.08 Zr, 0.07 to 0.12 C, bal. Ni. All of the castings met the above specifications. The castings were solutionized for 1 to 4 hr at 2250°F followed by aging at 1600°F for 32 hr which resulted in a 0.2 pct offset yield stress of 150,000 psi at room temperature. The microstructure of the material consisted of cuboidal, coherent particles of ordered, fcc Ni3(A1,Ti) (commonly designated y'), approximately 0.3 p on edge, distributed in an fcc y solid-solution matrix. MC carbides together with shrinkage and gas micropores were also distributed throughout the materials. The MC carbides and micropores were located preferentially in the interdendritic interstices, as well as in the grain boundaries in the columnar-grained castings. The (100) direction of all the single crystals and the common (100) axis of the grains in the columnar materials were aligned within about 5 deg of the specimen axis. Fatigue testing was carried out in the high-cycle (HCF) and low-cycle (LCF) fatigue regions, with the major difference being gross yielding of the specimen occurred during the first cycle in the LCF region. This division also corresponded with the more usual one in which the life of a specimen in LCF is less than lo4 cycles and that in HCF is greater than lo4 cycles. The designs of the high-cycle fatigue and low-cycle fatigue specimens are shown in Figs. l(a) and (c), respectively. The gage sections of both HCF and LCF specimens were electropolished prior to testing. The HCF specimens were tested in an MTS, closed-loop, hydraulic fatigue machine at 10 cps in air. The specimens were cycled between a tensile stress of 5000 psi and a maximum tensile stress which ranged from 35,000 to 125,000 psi, Fig. l(b). The LCF specimens were cycled under strain control from zero to a maximum tensile strain, Fig. l(d), in a Wiedemann-Baldwin testing machine. The experimental procedure has been described elsewhere.3'4 Both HCF and LCF tests were interrupted periodically in order to replicate the development of slip and cracking at the specimen surface. This was accomplished by placing plastic replicating tape around the gage section of the specimen while the specimen was in the mahine. The size of the MC carbides for all specimens was measured on a polished longitudinal section through the gage section after fatigue testing. The method of measurement consisted of carefully scanning the entire polished section in order to locate the largest MC carbides. Age hardening response of a Mg-Th-Zr alloy has been studied at temperatures in the range 60° to 450°C. Transmission microscopy revealed clustering of thorium atoms at low aging temperatures, supporting a previous report of GP zone formation. Peak strengthening, which is observed at 325°C, is due to the formation of a coherent, ordered, DO19 type superlattice structure, of Hobable composition Mg3Th, as plates parallel to the matrix prism planes. These plates later reveal a Laves phase structure of composition Mg2Th. The equilibrium Mg4Th phase begins to precipitate in two different forms at an early stage, competitively with the Mg2Th plates. RECENT work on the Mg-Th system indicated that, unlike most magnesium-base alloys, complex precipitation phenomena may be occurring. The partial phase diagram of the Mg-Th system indicates that an equilibrium phase, Mg5Th, is the sole intermediate phase.' sturkey,' however, has reported, using X-ray and electron diffraction techniques, that a metastable fcc Laves phase, Mg2Th, precedes the formation of the equilibrium compound, which he identified as closer in composition to Mg4Th. Murakami et al.3 reported that the equilibrium phase precipitates preferentially on grain boundaries and dislocations in a Mg-1.7 wt pct Th alloy; Kent and Kelly4 aged a more dilute alloy, Mg-0.5 wt pct Th, for 4 days at 220°C and found similar results. In addition, they reported that a platelike phase with a structure close to that of the magnesium matrix forms perpendicular to the basal plane and is probably ordered. Research on a Mg-4 wt pct Th alloy by electrical resistance measurements and transmission electron microscopy has suggested that GP zones may form at low aging temperatures.3 However, the electron micrographs purporting to show this phenomenon were not conclusive. In view of the fragmentary evidence concerning the nature of the precipitation processes in the various Mg-Th alloys, an aging study was undertaken to clarify the characteristics of the various precipitates which form and to correlate the mechanical properties of the system with the direct precipitate-dislocation interactions. The latter results are presented elsewhere.' The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to discuss the precipitation sequence in this system. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Sheet stock (0.060 and 0.010 in. thick) of a commercial Mg-3.93 wt pct Th-0.42 wt pct Zr alloy (designated HK3lA) similar to that studied by sturkey2 was supplied through the courtesy of Dr. S. L. Couling of Dow Metal Products Co. Zirconium does not enter into any precipitation reactions,' but is present primarily as a grain refiner. The alloy was chill cast, warm rolled to 0.090 in. thick stock, and then finally reduced by a combination of hot and cold rolling. The alloy chemistry is given in Table I. This material was solution treated at 580°C for 4 hr in a dry CO2 atmosphere, and then water quenched. Material in this condition was fairly clear of precipitate particles and was fully recrystallized. Aging at temperatures less than 200°C was accomplished by immersing the alloy in a silicone oil bath; for higher temperatures, aging was done in a salt pot. Age hardening treatments were conducted at 60°, 80°, 105°, 135°, 160°, 250°, 325°, 350°, and 450°C for times ranging from 5 min to 400 hr. Hardness tests were performed on chemically polished 0.060-in.-thick blanks of solution treated material which were aged at the various temperatures for increasing lengths of time. For aging temperatures above 150°C the Rockwell Superficial 30T scale was employed, while samples hardened at temperatures below 150°C were monitored with the 45T scale. Each data point consists of at least three separate readings. Yield stresses also were measured at room temperature on both 0.060 and 0.010 in. sheet specimens aged at 325°C. The aged foils were thinned by the window method in a solution of 80 pct absolute alcohol and 20 pct concentrated perchloric acid (70 pct) maintained at 0°C. A stainless steel cathode was used and the applied voltage was 10 to 15 v. Thinned samples were rinsed in distilled water and pure methanol. After the me-thanol rinse the thin foils were quickly dried between filter paper. Foils prepared by the above method were examined in a Hitachi HU11B electron microscope operating at 100 kv. RESULTS A) Hardness. The hardness data are depicted in Figs. 1 and 2. Peak strengthening occurs at 325°C after aging about 6 min, see Fig. 1. Significant strengthening is achieved also at 350°C, but aging at 450°C produces only softening. The stepped curve at 250°C indicates that a complicated precipitation process may be occurring at that temperature. Fig. 2 suggests that at least two hardening mechanisms exist since the lowest temperature hardness peaks are displaced to the left of the peaks obtained at 135° and 105°C. A great deal of scatter is observed at long times in all cases due to magnesium surface degradation caused by the silicone oil bath. B) Identification of the Strengthening Precipitates. The structure formed atlowagingtemperatures (c10O°C) was not clearly resolvable by transmission microscopy. The only bright-field evidence for a change in structure was a mottled appearance which could be observed at extinction contours, as shown in Fig. 3(a), and the disappearance of this effect when dislocations produced under the influence of the electron beam passed through the matrix, as noted in

THE motive for merging or consolidation today is conspicuously different from that actuating business men in the late eighties and early nine- ties. Then they combined to secure added productive capacity and to monopolize their respective industries with a view to exploiting the consumer. So flagrant were some of these cases that they brought about their own correctives via retaliation on the part of the public and the subsequent restrictive legislation and legal curbs. The objective of the present-day merger, writes W. R. Hill in Printers' Ink, December, 1927, is summarized as follows : "In the golden days when an industry was being cut to pieces, the prevailing cure was to combine. The reason for such trusts was to strangle competition and by creating a monopoly, dominate the market, raise prices, regardless of economic business methods, and simply force larger profits.

AS the pioneer operation treating the mixed lead- zinc-iron ores from the district tributary to the Salt Lake Valley, the International Smelting Co.'s plant has offered an extremely interesting and instructive opportunity to study some phases of this problem. Basically, there were two main reason for our attempting to work out a successful operation for the separation and concentration of the values contained in the rather widespread deposits of these so- called lead-zinc ores. In the first place, the time was ripe and demanded some method of curtailing the economic waste resulting from the costs of past and present practice of smelting ores of this character, or rather, those ores which could stand the charges inherent with smelting them. Secondly, but rather primarily with us, we believe that such a solution would greatly in- crease in general the production of lead in the district tributary to the Salt Lake Valley. It is generally known that there were and are three relatively large lead smelting plants in the Salt Lake Valley and the decreasing production of correspondingly clean lead ores was not efficient to justify the existence of all three. We could not hope for better lead smelting metallurgy nor more efficient business management than was being practised, so the only prospect was to at- tempt to work out some way to increase the primary production and thus widen the scope of operations.

The notion prevails that writing is a knack, that the skilful use of the pen is a gift of nature. This is an error. Dogberry may be responsible for it; he said: "To be a well-informed man is the gift of fortune, but to write and read comes by nature". Because Dogberry said it, we may be sure that Shakespeare thought otherwise. Ability of any sort may be partly innate, but my own observation and experience lead me to conclude that most of the easy writers have become so by constant practice. As I recall the names of men successful with the pen, I remember that most of them have written a great deal and have taken particular pains to improve their style. The suggestion that proficiency in the difficult art is a happy accident provokes a sardonic smile. The larger part of the great writing in our literature is the result of persistent effort. An easy fluency has been the undoing of many; their flamboyant and fantastic scribbling has proved as perishable as froth. This criticism applies to technical writing also; in order that a technical description or discussion may hold the interest of the reader, at least long enough to cause him to read it to the end, the writing must be done carefully and systematically; otherwise it will fail in its purpose of conveying information. Clearness is absolutely essential. "It is not enough to use language that may be understood; it is necessary to use language that must be understood."* The purpose of writing, at least of that which is meant to be read by others, is not only to express ideas but to communicate them. Diminishing returns in management's fight to lower manufacturing expenses have added luster to savings that can be achieved in delivered costs through creative management of the distribution function. This is especially true for companies engaged in the production of bulk commodities, for which transport costs may represent 25 to 50% or more of total delivered price, A. E. Cascino, vice president of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, recently gave an example of why top management in his firm is concerned with distribution: "The price of a ton of phosphate rock, f.o.b. mine, is about $7. The cost of warehousing, freight, and handling frequently totals an additional $11 . . . . If one of our competitors . . . discovers a way in which he can cut his distribution costs by $3, we're dead! Even if we wanted to offset our competitor's more efficient means of shipping with reduced f.o.b. price for our product-we don't have that much profit margin . . . ." In a special report on the revolution now occurring in transportation of goods, Business Week stated in its September 24 issue: "Moving and storing goods on their way from mine and mill through various sub-assemblies to their final markets costs anywhere from $50 billion to $75 billion a year- $100 billion if paperwork costs are included.

The A. I. M. E. Subcommittee on Bituminous Mining has been trying for several years to secure the information that was collected by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing &. on the subsidence of its property caused by mining coal beneath it. The Marquette company was willing to have these data used, but it was impossible to obtain them because the records had been filed away. About two years ago these records became available and the engineering data presented herewith were compiled from them by R. L. Auchmuty, assisted by L. E. Young, who was connected with the collection of the information. On account of the cost, it is impossible to reproduce all of the data here, although the original information is on file with the records of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. The accompanying charts show representative and average data and give only the engineering information with enough description to tell how it was obtained. It is hoped that all of those connected with the original case will participate in the discussion that this will bring forth. Howard N. Eavenson, Chairman, Subcommittee on Bituminous Coal Mining. PRobably the most complete records of subsidence due to coal mining in the United States are those compiled by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. at LaSalle, 111. These records, covering a period of more than three years, were compiled and used as evidence during the suit of the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. vs. the Oglesby Coal Co. at Oglesby, LaSalle County, Ill., in which the cement company successfully endeavored to stop the coal company from mining under its property. Fig. 1 shows a typical section of the geological formation. The cement company was mining the LaSalle limestone which lies about 125 ft. under the surface. The limestone is 30 to 35 ft. thick and underlain by about 15 ft. of shale. The cement company was mining about 20 ft. of the limestone, and in some places 10 to 12 ft. of the underlying shale, by the room and pillar method. The mining of the limestone always preceded the mining of the shale. The coal company was mining by longwall advance methods the NO. 2 seam of coal 42 in. thick underlying the limestone bed by 435 to 470 ft. The coal mine, a very old one, had largely mined out its original property

The mines of the St. Joseph Lead Co. in St. Francois County, Missouri, form a roughly triangular area of about 45 square miles. Locally this is known as the Lead Belt. The four operating mines in the area at present are the Federal, Leadwood, Desloge, and Bonne Terre, in decreasing order of mine area and daily production. Mining began in 1864 and has been carried on in the district continuously since that time. As a group, the Lead Belt mines now handle 20,000 gal. per min. of water, average head about 465 ft., against a normal daily ore tonnage of 21,200 tons. For a six-day operating week this gives a ratio of 6½ tons of water per ton of ore. Total average pumping in 1931 was about 15,000 gal. per min. The formations above this, present in the Lead Belt in small areas only, are of minor importance. The ore bodies occur as large, horizontal tabular masses or as long, narrow runs; they are found throughout the Bonne Terre but largely in the lower 150 ft. The rather indefinite contact with the La Motte is a favorite ore horizon. Milling is entirely by open stope and pillar breast systems. To the south, west, and north of the district, sandstone outcrops are few and limited. Heavy faulting bounds The district on those sides and probably there is little if any artesian circulation from those directions. The Peruvian production increased over 3 million barrels from 1933 to 1934—from approximately 13¼ million barrels to over 16¼ million barrels—bringing the cumulative production of the country up to 171 million barrels. Most of this production, as well as most of the increase in 1934, came from La Brea-Parinas Estate, the property of the International Petroleum Co., Limited. In 1932 Peru stood eleventh among the oil-producing countries of the world, but in 1933 her production exceeded that of Trinidad, Argentine and Colombia, which placed her in eighth position. In 1934 Peru's production was exceeded by that of Colombia by about one million barrels, and by that of the Argentine by about 1½ million barrels, thus placing her in tenth position. After several years of relative inactivity in drilling and exploration there was a noticeable increase during 1934 in both of these lines of activity. Oil Fields La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production on the La Brea-Parinas Estate. reached a significant total of 85,080 bbl. as early as 1891. It increased to over one million barrels in 1912, and to over 10 million barrels in 1929, and in 1934 it reached an all-time high of over 14 million barrels. The total production from 1890 to 1934 was 133,784,609 barrels. Practically all the drilling on the property has been done with cable tools, but during 1934 three strings of rotary tools were introduced. One was a heavy outfit for drilling a deep test and the other two were lighter outfits for deepening wells in the newer section of the field, where the gas pressure was too high to permit safe drilling with standard tools. During 1934 a total of 28,127 ft. was drilled, 66 wells were deepened, and 6 new wells were completed. At the end of the year 2844 wells had been drilled on the Estate, of which 1814 were still productive. The remaining 1030 wells represent abandoned producers or dry holes. The total area that has been productive up to the present time is estimated at 13,369 acres. Peru produced approximately 17,466,620 bbl., of oil during 1937, or slightly less than the record high of 17,593,700 bbl. established during 1936. As in 1936, the entire output of the country was derived from the La Brea-Parinas, Lobitos-Restin and Zorritos fields in the northwestern part of the country. Outside of the proven areas, drilling was 'continued by the Peruvian Government in the northern province of Tumbes on the reserved zone at Zorritos. Drilling was carried out on three locations, two of which are understood to have been abandoned during the year. In southern Peru, further attention was given by Government engineers to the Pusi and Saman districts and plans are being worked out for the commencement of drilling operations in the near future in the vicinity of Pirin. Activities in the montaiia region in eastern Peru were continued by the Compafiia Petrolera El Ganso Azul. This company acquired the interest of the Selden Breck Co., and holds some 90,000 acres along the Pachitea River a few miles above its confluence with the Ucayali. During the year, the preparation of a landing place, the cutting of a 12-km. (71/2-mile) road from the river to the drill site, and the construction of a camp were undertaken. Equipment for drilling on this company's concessions has already arrived in South America. La Brea-Parinas Estate.—Production of crude oil on the La Brea-Parinas Estate of the International Petroleum Company Limited amounted to 14,722,754 bbl. during 1937, a decrease of 403,736 bbl. from the all-time high reached during 1936. The total production from 1890 to Dec. 31,1937, was 178,390,767 bbl. During 1937, a total of 141,653 ft. was drilled, 129,516 ft. in new wells and 12,137 in deepening existing wells. In all, 57 wells were completed, 47 of which produced oil, 2 were gas wells and 8 dry. holes. Twenty-nine wells were cleaned out or deepened during the year. The average depth of new wells completed during 1937 was 2367 ft. compared with 1984 ft. for the new wells completed during 1936. There was an increased use of rotary tools during the year and this method is now used to a greater extent than the cable-tool method, which formerly predominated.
